- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Merry Christmas to you today.
- 0:19We are continuing in Psalm 119, verses one O 5 through 112, one
- 0:26O 5 through 112, and this comes from the verses in Psalm 119
- 0:32that all start with the Hebrew letter.
- 0:34None, None. Not the Catholic order of women,
- 0:43not nuns, none. But today, man, this is a really
- 0:49sobering portion of someone 19 even as it relates to Jesus.
- 0:55And I think as we walk through this together, you'll see what
- 0:58I'm talking about. Verse 105.
- 1:02Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.
- 1:08I've solemnly sworn to keep your righteous judgments.
- 1:12I am severely afflicted Yahweh. Give me life according to Your
- 1:18Word. Yahweh, please accept my free
- 1:21will offerings of praise and teach me Your judgments.
- 1:25My life is constantly in danger, yet I do not forget Your
- 1:30instruction. The wicked have set a trap for
- 1:33me, but I have not wandered from Your precepts.
- 1:37I have Your decrees as a heritage forever.
- 1:40Indeed, they are the joy of my heart.
- 1:43I am resolved to obey your statutes to the very end.
- 1:50Let's look as as I think about Jesus, as I think about
- 1:54Christmas, I remember the fact that Jesus was born to die.
- 1:58From the very first moment that he entered into this world,
- 2:03there was already the picture as he's laid in a Manger, like a
- 2:07lamb would have fed out of that. He was the Lamb of God who would
- 2:11take away the sin of the world. Let's begin in verse one O 5.
- 2:16One O 5. Your word is a lamp for my feet
- 2:21and a light on my path. I think about what John says in
- 2:24John one, that he was the light of the world and yet the
- 2:29darkness did not comprehend or overcome him.
- 2:34That he was in the world and the world was made by him, but the
- 2:38world did not know Him. And into our darkness, into our
- 2:42spiritual darkness, into our evil and mistreatment, Jesus
- 2:49came. The Word is the light that shows
- 2:53us in the darkness, in the blackness of what sin has
- 2:57created. God's Word shows us the way
- 3:00forward. When you look at your
- 3:03relationships and you don't know what to do, God's Word will show
- 3:07you how to reconcile, how to have humility, when to take some
- 3:12good steps for safety or for the blessing of others or for their
- 3:17encouragement. When you are struggling at work,
- 3:20God's Word can show you how you're supposed to relate with
- 3:24your boss or with your coworkers or with your workload and even
- 3:28your work ethic as you navigate through.
- 3:32For many of us, we don't have to directly deal with politics.
- 3:37I'm certain there might be a politician or someone that might
- 3:40listen to this podcast. But as you're trying to
- 3:44determine what choices do I make, especially in today's
- 3:48culture and age in regards to what direction our country goes,
- 3:53you can find out the answers through the Word of God.
- 3:58And I'm so thankful that every single day that I live, I can
- 4:02find out the path that I'm supposed to walk through the
- 4:05Word I love. Here he says, your word is the
- 4:07lamp for my feet and a light on my path.
- 4:12God's word doesn't give us the full route of what our life is
- 4:16going to entail, But here, a lamp for the feet.
- 4:19That's just step by step. You are walking and and though
- 4:23it's dark, you can see the next step that you need to take
- 4:26because that lamp is right there.
- 4:29And so you're able to say, OK, I don't know all of the steps that
- 4:32I'm going to take. I can't walk the entire journey
- 4:36in this light, but I can take the next right step.
- 4:40And for you today, I want to encourage you, God always has a
- 4:44next right step for you, the next right way to respond to
- 4:49someone, the next right way to apologize, the next right person
- 4:53that you're supposed to speak to about the Lord, the next right
- 4:57step of how you should begin mending a relationship.
- 5:00God's not going to line it all out for you.
- 5:02He's not going to give you the blueprints for the rest of your
- 5:05life. But as you take the next right
- 5:07step, God can be glorified. Verse one O 6 sorry, I'm also
- 5:13supposed to be tying this in for for Jesus.
- 5:15Verse one O 5 Jesus took the next right step.
- 5:19Even in the garden of Gethsemane.
- 5:22He's praying not for everything that'll happen.
- 5:25He's just saying for the next right step, he says, God, if
- 5:29it's your will, let this cup pass for me.
- 5:31Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.
- 5:34And he took the next right step. He exited the garden or that
- 5:39portion of the garden with his disciples, and he said it's
- 5:42time, and he took the next right step and met Judas and the
- 5:46temple guards that would take him away and put him on trial.
- 5:50And if that's the step that Jesus took, that next right
- 5:54thing that he was supposed to do, then certainly we can
- 5:57realize, OK, God might not always be pleasant.
- 6:00It might not always results in immediate happiness.
- 6:04But I know what the next right thing to do is from your word
- 6:07verse one O 6. I have solemnly sworn to keep
- 6:11your righteous judgments. Jesus was the only one whoever
- 6:14did actually keep God's righteous judgments and his
- 6:18promise is true. I think it's Paul in maybe
- 6:23Second Corinthians that says that in Jesus all of God's
- 6:28promises are yes and Amen, that you can take to the bank.
- 6:33What Jesus has said to you. He is faithful and he kept his
- 6:38promise to keep the righteous judgments of God, and he will
- 6:41keep all of his promises to you as well.
- 6:44Verse 107 I am severely afflicted.
- 6:47Yahweh, give me life according to your word.
- 6:51I can think of no one who underwent greater affliction
- 6:54than Jesus. I'm sinful and so when someone
- 6:58harms me, it can sometimes feel good to try and inflict harm
- 7:04back on another person, even if not verbally.
- 7:07Like mentally in my head, I'm like, Oh yeah, I, I would say
- 7:10this to that person in retaliation for what they said
- 7:13to me. Or man, if I get the chance, I'm
- 7:15really going to lay into that person and it can bring me some,
- 7:21you know, quote UN quote relief to go, Oh yeah, I'm going to
- 7:24return evil for the evil that they had towards me.
- 7:28Jesus never did that. He never had that quote UN quote
- 7:32relief moment of responding with hurt towards others that hurt
- 7:39Him. He always bore it.
- 7:44You can think of him at the trial, beaten, mocked, scourged.
- 7:52His beard was ripped out. They took him, delivered him to
- 7:56the Romans, who whipped Him with the cat of nine tails, the whip
- 8:02made-up of broken bones and glass and other sharp objects.
- 8:10He was so disfigured that the prophet Isaiah, talking about
- 8:14what would happen to Jesus, says he was unrecognizable even as a
- 8:19man as a result of what he went through, and that severely
- 8:24afflicted Savior was not left in his affliction.
- 8:29They are at the end of verse one.
- 8:30O 7 Yahweh, give me life according to your word, that
- 8:35three days later he was instructed to rise, and just as
- 8:41he had done for those that were dead, the Father called the Son
- 8:46to rise. And he rose in the power of the
- 8:48Holy Spirit, and he rose in his own power, victorious over sin
- 8:53and death in the grave and hell, and he rose triumphant.
- 8:58And that Jesus that was given life according to the decree,
- 9:01the word of God. He has said that if Jesus came
- 9:06out of the grave, then we are coming out of the grave as well.
- 9:10Jesus is the first fruits of the resurrection.
- 9:14That just as surely as Jesus's tomb is empty, your tomb and my
- 9:18tomb will one day be empty. We will be given those new
- 9:22resurrection bodies and we will live and rule and reign with
- 9:27Him. What a wonderful truth in the
- 9:30affliction that you currently are facing.
- 9:33Realize this is not the end. The end is resurrection.
- 9:37The end is life according to the Word, the promise of the Word of
- 9:42God as guaranteed by Jesus's life.
- 9:47Verse one O 8 Yahweh, please accept my free will offerings of
- 9:51praise and teach me your judgments.
- 9:56Oh friend Jesus, he freely gave his life.
- 10:02He had no sin. He had no sin that he needed to
- 10:07atone for with his sacrifice of his body and his blood that was
- 10:11broken for us. Here is the psalmist praise.
- 10:15Please accept my free will offerings of praise.
- 10:17It was adoration and praise to God even as you think about
- 10:22Jesus last words on the cross, Father into your hands I commit
- 10:27my spirit that Jesus offered his life freely.
- 10:34He did not have to die. John talks about that within his
- 10:38gospel that as Judas and the temple guards came to arrest
- 10:42Jesus and they asked, oh are are you Jesus of Nazareth?
- 10:46And he says, I am that covenant name.
- 10:48Yahweh from the Old Testament says that the temple guards,
- 10:52everyone fell back as a result of the power that Jesus showed.
- 10:57But Jesus wanted to be taken in obedience to the will of the
- 11:02Father, planned from all eternity past.
- 11:04Jesus is eager, joyful sacrifice on our behalf so that we could
- 11:11be reconciled with our God. Three and one.
- 11:16Jesus freely offered his life. As he said, no one takes it from
- 11:20me. I have the power, I have the
- 11:22authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to pick it
- 11:26back up again. Jesus freely gave his life.
- 11:30But as we learned, even in Leviticus, though Jesus offered
- 11:37a free will offering of praise, we needed a sacrifice for our
- 11:42sin. We needed a sacrifice because we
- 11:45were alienated from God and we had no way back to him on our
- 11:49own. And Jesus's sacrifice was a sin
- 11:52offering. Jesus's sacrifice was that Day
- 11:55of Atonement type offering where all of our sins are covered,
- 12:00where we are freely forgiven forever because justice has been
- 12:04poured out on the Son of God, and because G and because the
- 12:08Father will always accept the sacrifice of the Son, everyone
- 12:13who identifies with Jesus and with his sacrifice, they will
- 12:18always be accepted by the Father.
- 12:21I love this. Because Jesus accepted the
- 12:23sacrifice of Jesus, or sorry, Because the Father accepted the
- 12:26sacrifice of Jesus, the Father will accept you as you accept
- 12:31the sacrifice of Jesus. What a wonderful, wonderful
- 12:35truth. Psalm sorry, verse 109.
- 12:38My life is constantly in danger, yet I do not forget your
- 12:42instruction, Jesus. They tried to kill him several
- 12:45times. They tried to kill him in
- 12:47Capernaum. They tried to kill him in
- 12:48Nazareth. They tried to kill him several
- 12:51times in Jerusalem, eventually succeeding.
- 12:53Yet though Jesus's life was in danger, he didn't 'cause that he
- 12:57didn't allow that to turn him away from the Father.
- 13:00He didn't allow it to turn him away from his mission.
- 13:03Instead, he went to it. I believe it's man.
- 13:07It's either Matthew or Luke's Gospel that talks about Jesus.
- 13:11He he set his face toward Jerusalem for that final
- 13:17Passover week where he would give his life, that he had an
- 13:21intention that he would give his life and nothing would deter
- 13:25him. For you, what deters you from
- 13:28walking with God? Even death itself and the sin of
- 13:32all the world being placed on Jesus could not deter him.
- 13:36What do you allow to deter you from your walk with the Lord?
- 13:40Verse 110 the wicked have set a trap for me.
- 13:43Yeah, we can definitely think about Jesus with that says, but
- 13:47I have not wandered from your precepts.
- 13:51Do you allow the wickedness and the evil of others to deter you
- 13:56from your walk with the Lord? Do you allow what someone else
- 14:00said about you one time to keep you from walking with Jesus?
- 14:04Do you allow the mistreatment that you suffered at the hands
- 14:07of others to deter you from worshiping and following the God
- 14:12who has never once mistreated you and who will bring you
- 14:16ultimate healing forever? Be like Jesus and though the
- 14:20wicked have their traps, you have chosen that you will not
- 14:24wander from God's precepts. Verse 111.
- 14:27I have your decrees as a heritage forever.
- 14:30Indeed, they are the joy of my heart, Jesus delighted to do the
- 14:36will of the Father. And I even think about Hebrews
- 14:39chapter 12 where we are told that Jesus for the joy that was
- 14:43set before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and
- 14:47his sat down at the right hand of God.
- 14:51Are God's decrees, His words, His commands?
- 14:55Are they a joy to your heart, or do you ignore them?
- 14:59Do you wish that they said something else so that you can
- 15:01live your life however you want? No, my friend, choose to
- 15:05embrace, to love, to enjoy the Word of God.
- 15:10Very often, especially in churches nowadays, people can
- 15:14place a lot of importance on stories, on self help, on ways
- 15:21of spending your time in the gathering that don't focus on
- 15:27Scripture, that don't focus on the Word of God.
- 15:31And the truth is we need the life and the joy and the purpose
- 15:35and the relationship with God that only comes through meeting
- 15:39God where we where he has placed his identity and his character,
- 15:44which is within his word. We know what we're supposed to
- 15:47do. We know who we're supposed to be
- 15:49as a result of knowing who God is and what he has done and what
- 15:53he has said. Verse 112.
- 15:56Then, as we end today, I'm resolved to obey your statutes
- 16:00to the very end. Jesus, to the very end of his
- 16:03life, followed the Lord even in his dying moments on the cross,
- 16:09he remembered to honor his mother.
- 16:13And he told his disciple John to take care of Mary, just as Jesus
- 16:19took care of Mary at various points throughout his life.
- 16:22And he told Mary to take care of John.
- 16:24He says you're you're going to need a replacement.
- 16:27And so you take care of John and John, you take care of my
- 16:31mother. That the 10 commandments, Jesus
- 16:33was still actively obeying them as he was dying.
- 16:39What a wonderful Savior. May we resolve to obey the
- 16:42statutes of God to the very end of our lives.
- 16:46Thanks for tuning in today. I hope that kind of this
- 16:49Christmas episode of sorts will remind you of the wonderful
- 16:54Savior that we worship today. I think of Luke 214 I preached
- 17:00about a couple of Sundays ago, which says as the angels
- 17:04proclaiming glory to God in the highest heavens and peace on
- 17:08earth to those He favors, May God bless you today and keep
- 17:13you. May He make His face to shine
- 17:15upon you and give you peace. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 17:19See you next episode.
