- 0:26notes. As part of NASA's Artemis
- 0:29campaign to return humans to the moon for the benefit of all,
- 0:33NASA is working with SpaceX to develop the company's large,
- 0:37gigantic Starship human landing system, the HLS, which will land
- 0:42astronauts near the moon's South Pole during the Artemis 3 and
- 0:46Artemis 4 missions. And on March 14th, SpaceX
- 0:49launched the third integrated flight test of its Super Heavy
- 0:52booster and Starship upper stage.
- 0:55This is an important milestone toward providing NASA with a
- 0:57Starship HLS for its Artemis missions.
- 1:01A complement of 33 Raptor engines fueled by super cooled
- 1:05liquid methane and liquid oxygen powered this Super Heavy booster
- 1:09with Starship stacked atop from the company's Starbase Orbital
- 1:12launchpad at 8:25 AM CDT. Now Starship using 6 Raptor
- 1:18engines separated from the Super Heavy booster, employing a hot
- 1:22staging technique to fire the engines before separation and
- 1:25approximately 3 minutes into the flight in accordance with the
- 1:28flight plan. Now this was the 3rd flight test
- 1:31of the integrated Super Heavy Starship system.
- 1:36Now, with each flight test, SpaceX attempts increasingly
- 1:41ambitious objectives for Starship to learn as much as
- 1:43possible for future mission systems development.
- 1:47The ability to test key systems and processes and flight
- 1:50scenarios like these integrated tests allows both NASA and
- 1:54SpaceX to gather crucial data needed for the continued
- 1:58development of Starship HLS. The test accomplished several
- 2:03important firsts that will contribute to the development of
- 2:05Starship. For Artemis lunar landing
- 2:07missions, the spacecraft reaches expected orbit and Starship
- 2:11completed the full duration ascent burn.
- 2:13An objective closely tied to future Artemis missions is a
- 2:17transfer of thousands of pounds of cryogenic propellant between
- 2:21internal tanks during the spacecraft's coast phase as part
- 2:23of NASA's Space Technology Missions Directorate 2020
- 2:27Tipping Point Awards. Now the propellant transfer
- 2:30Demonstration operations were completed and the NASA SpaceX
- 2:33team is currently reviewing the flight data that was received
- 2:36during those tests. This Tipping point technology
- 2:39demonstration is one of more than 20 development activities
- 2:42that NASA is undertaking to solve the challenges of using
- 2:45cryogenic fluids during the future missions.
- 2:48NASA A key step forward understanding how super cool
- 2:51propellant slosh is within these tanks when the engines are shut
- 2:55down, and how that movement effects Starship stability while
- 2:58in orbit. Engineers will study flight test
- 3:01data to assess the performance of thrusters that control
- 3:03starship's orientation in space. We're also interested to learn
- 3:08more about how the fluids movement within the tanks can be
- 3:11settled to maximize propellant transfer efficiency and ensure
- 3:14Raptor engines receive needed propellant conditions to support
- 3:17restart in orbit. Now, storing and transferring
- 3:20cryogenic propellant in orbit has never been attempted on this
- 3:24scale before, but this is a game changing technology that must be
- 3:28developed and matured for science and exploration missions
- 3:32at the Moon, Mars, and those that will venture even deeper
- 3:37into the solar system. Now NASA's Artemis program, the
- 3:41agency will land the first woman, the first person of color
- 3:43and its first international partner astronaut on the lunar
- 3:47surface and prepare for human expeditions to Mars.
- 3:51And commercial human launch systems and landing system are
- 3:54critical to deep space exploration along with the SLS
- 3:57rocket, Orion spacecraft, advanced space suits, Rovers,
- 4:01exploration ground systems and also the Gateway space station.
- 4:06Now for the second time during this flight, all 33 Raptor
- 4:10engines on the Super Heavy booster started up successfully
- 4:13and completed a full duration burn during ascent and Starship
- 4:16executed its second successful hot stage separation, powering
- 4:20down all but three of Super Heavy's Raptor engines and
- 4:23successfully igniting the six second stage Raptor engines
- 4:27before separating the vehicles. Now following separation, the
- 4:30Super Heavy booster successfully completed its flip move and
- 4:33completed a full boost back burn to send it towards its
- 4:36splashdown point in the Gulf of Mexico.
- 4:39Super Heavy successfully lit several engines for its first
- 4:42ever landing burn before the vehicle experienced a Rudd,
- 4:46which is a rapid unscheduled disassembly.
- 4:50Now. The boosters flight concluded at
- 4:52approximately 462 meters in altitude and just under 7
- 4:56minutes into the mission. Starship's six second stage
- 4:59Raptor engines all started successfully and powered the
- 5:02vehicle to its expected orbit, becoming the first Starship to
- 5:05complete its full duration ascent burn and while coasting,
- 5:09Starship accomplished several of the flight tests additional
- 5:12objectives clearly the opening and closing of its payload door
- 5:15or the Pez dispenser if you will, and initiated A propellant
- 5:18transfer demonstration. Starship did not attempt its
- 5:21planned on orbit relight of a single Raptor engine due to
- 5:25vehicle roll rates during coast. Our results from this
- 5:29demonstration will come after post flight data review is
- 5:32complete. Starship went on to experience
- 5:35its first ever entry from space, providing valuable data on
- 5:38heating and vehicle control during hypersonic RE entry.
- 5:41Now live views of this were made possible due to Starlink
- 5:46terminals operating on the Starterm.
- 5:47They're absolutely brilliant views, you have to check them
- 5:50out on Space XS X page now. The flight test conclusion came
- 5:55during entry with the last telemetry signals received via
- 5:59Starlink from Starship. At approximately 49 minutes into
- 6:02the mission, and while the team receives and reviews the data
- 6:05collected from the flight, Starship and Super Heavy
- 6:07Vehicles are preparing for upcoming flights.
- 6:10As they seek to increase launch cadence throughout the year,
- 6:14they want to do up to 9 launches this year.
- 6:16Now, this is a rapid, iterative development approach.
- 6:20You build it, you fly it, something happens, you figure
- 6:24something out, you learn from that, then you fly the next one.
- 6:28It's the basis for all of Spacex's major innovative
- 6:30advancements, including Falcon, Dragon, and Starlink.
- 6:33It's called recursive improvement, and it's essential
- 6:36in the way that SpaceX builds spacecraft.
- 6:39They want to get Starship into Earth orbit, they want to
- 6:43transport humans, they want it completely reusable, and they
- 6:47want to help humanity return to the moon and ultimately travel
