Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Today.
- 0:00Speaker 2: I'm Jackson. This is Tom Kunzi. We're from Bloody Ripper,
- 0:07Speaker 2: a punk band from Melbourne. Our debut album I hardly
- 0:10Speaker 2: know it's coming out today.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Beautiful gentlemen, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:17Speaker 1: All right, thanks for having us.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Oh, as you mentioned, Bloody Ripper release your debut album,
- 0:22Speaker 4: I hardly know her today Friday the thirteenth.
- 0:24Speaker 3: So what are your expectations, guys?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Ah, you know, it's just nice to get some music
- 0:31Speaker 1: out there.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Really been a band for a pretty long time, and
- 0:35Speaker 2: we've done one EP before this, and yeah, just put
- 0:39Speaker 2: a lot of work into this album, so it'd be
- 0:41Speaker 2: nice to get some mus on it.
- 0:44Speaker 4: So tell us more about the album from a musical
- 0:46Speaker 4: point of view that and what you're going for with it.
- 0:50Speaker 5: I mean like it's it's a pretty I mean widespread cuddalog.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Some of the songs were written before I was even
- 0:56Speaker 5: in the band, and then a few of them after
- 1:01Speaker 5: I came. And it's just like, I don't know, for me,
- 1:03Speaker 5: I look at it as like an homage to all
- 1:05Speaker 5: the ship we used to listen to when we were younger.
- 1:08Speaker 5: I kind of feel like that's how we approached it,
- 1:11Speaker 5: and you know that kind of nostalgic, punky feeling, and.
- 1:18Speaker 4: You released a single Pints so Far, So is that
- 1:21Speaker 4: a good sonic representation?
- 1:22Speaker 3: What do you expect?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that probably falls somewhere like in the middle ground.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Like we've got some songs that are a bit lighter,
- 1:29Speaker 2: bit more bluesy, and then we've got some that are
- 1:32Speaker 2: pretty heavy as well. People ask us it's like, oh,
- 1:36Speaker 2: what kind of do you play? And it's a hard
- 1:39Speaker 2: question to answer, but it's a little bit of everything.
- 1:43Speaker 4: And the film clip of that song too is a cracker,
- 1:45Speaker 4: like it follows Shags trying to find love in a
- 1:50Speaker 4: pub speed dating night, Like is it based on a
- 1:52Speaker 4: true story?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Nah, it's just a fun idea. He came up with
- 1:59Speaker 2: shoot the ship and came up with a pretty fun
- 2:01Speaker 2: like I've just got a haircut, and they were all like, oh,
- 2:04Speaker 2: I've got to do something with something with the haircut.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So we just made it like a kind of seventies theme,
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know, a bit of fun really, and.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I think fun fun is the key.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Weren't there guys Like it looks like they're a lot
- 2:15Speaker 4: of fun and it looks like you guys are a
- 2:17Speaker 4: fun sort of band that don't take yourselves too seriously,
- 2:20Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, definitely, Yeah, for sure that's the case. Like
- 2:24Speaker 1: we're all mates.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Before we were in the band, so it kind of
- 2:26Speaker 2: just comes naturally to hang out and be friends and
- 2:29Speaker 2: playing music together.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Sort of getting harder and harder these days over the
- 2:34Speaker 4: world becoming more sanitized to be yourselves, isn't it.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I mean there's definitely an element in that
- 2:41Speaker 5: in throughout the whole album really is like we were
- 2:45Speaker 5: trying to get away from that kind of, as you said,
- 2:47Speaker 5: sanitized style.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Yeah, the world expects you to be something these days
- 2:54Speaker 4: that hardly anyone really isn't.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Think people have deciate's something that they can tell isn't
- 3:02Speaker 2: bullshit as well? You know, it's not trying to be
- 3:04Speaker 2: something it's not.
- 3:08Speaker 4: The press release says I hardly know her explores the
- 3:11Speaker 4: band's diverse musical range.
- 3:13Speaker 3: So you touched on it before, but can you elaborate
- 3:15Speaker 3: a bit further.
- 3:18Speaker 5: Well, it's like, I guess we all have overlaps with
- 3:21Speaker 5: our styles and I guess our what's the word fucking,
- 3:27Speaker 5: But they're the like that vendor pretty large parts out
- 3:32Speaker 5: outside of it, which is a solely each individual band member,
- 3:37Speaker 5: and I guess that's where that comes from, because like,
- 3:39Speaker 5: I like stuff that's I probably the heaviest taste in
- 3:42Speaker 5: the band. But I still like a lot of the
- 3:44Speaker 5: stuff that these guys get down with, and you know,
- 3:47Speaker 5: we're still consider them my inspiration as well. And I'm
- 3:49Speaker 5: sure it's the same with Jackson, Like you know, it's
- 3:51Speaker 5: it's all these different kind of tastes coming together.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think we've ever tried to be like
- 4:00Speaker 2: one sort of band. You know, We've had a lot
- 4:01Speaker 2: of people tell us over the years, like, oh, you
- 4:03Speaker 2: probably do better if you're stuck to one one sort
- 4:06Speaker 2: of type of music, But we just kind of have
- 4:08Speaker 2: fun with it. We write all our songs mostly together
- 4:11Speaker 2: in a room, jamming with each other, so like it's
- 4:13Speaker 2: kind of whenever inspiration hits or someone plays the riff
- 4:17Speaker 2: and we're like, oh that sounds cool, and jump on
- 4:19Speaker 2: it and kind of put your own spin onto stuff.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 4: And I know there's no song on the album called
- 4:25Speaker 4: I Hardly Know Her, so implies it's deeper significance.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just I don't know.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I just started saying it as a joke, but maybe
- 4:41Speaker 2: six months ago or so, every time someone would say
- 4:44Speaker 2: something ending in er to be like Buddy Ripper hardly
- 4:47Speaker 2: know one mate, that's actually just from that.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, unfortunately.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Reading better.
- 5:01Speaker 4: So going into your debut album, guys, like i'd had,
- 5:04Speaker 4: the music industry these days, it's a lot different what
- 5:06Speaker 4: it used to be. So, well, what's your thought process
- 5:09Speaker 4: going into a debut album in the modern age?
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, like we.
- 5:15Speaker 5: It just came into like it was kind of an
- 5:17Speaker 5: element of let's just fucking get something on tape, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 5: get something done, do that and see how it goes.
- 5:24Speaker 5: We had like decent enough kind of expertise within the
- 5:29Speaker 5: man and connections to not have to you know, go
- 5:33Speaker 5: crazy with with budget or anything like that. But it
- 5:35Speaker 5: was just like working on stuff ourselves, doing that and
- 5:40Speaker 5: having a kind of cohesive piece of work that we
- 5:43Speaker 5: could be proud of at the.
- 5:44Speaker 4: End of it.
- 5:45Speaker 5: I mean, it'd be cool if it took off or whatever,
- 5:47Speaker 5: like like seek we want to play big crowds, we
- 5:49Speaker 5: want to do that kind of thing, but it's also
- 5:52Speaker 5: nice just to.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Have something out there. It was probably a bit more
- 5:54Speaker 2: self indulgent than anything.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah, and you have.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Beat a had for about a decade and you're just
- 6:02Speaker 4: getting your first full length out, So is that just circumstance?
- 6:06Speaker 4: Is it you wait until you had songs you liked
- 6:08Speaker 4: or was there any any reason it's taken.
- 6:10Speaker 2: To Yeah, it's a bit of all of it really,
- 6:12Speaker 2: Like Kunzi's our second drama, and we've had a couple
- 6:16Speaker 2: of different bass players over the years, and you know,
- 6:21Speaker 2: our styles definitely like evolved and grown. So like some
- 6:23Speaker 2: of the songs we wrote first, we tried tried to
- 6:25Speaker 2: record them. We didn't really know what we're doing, so
- 6:27Speaker 2: we went super happy with them. So for the first yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 2: probably we kind of just didn't put anything out because
- 6:33Speaker 2: it wasn't up to the speck that we wanted. And
- 6:37Speaker 2: then we just really we really worked on like our
- 6:40Speaker 2: large show. We love playing live all the time. Like
- 6:42Speaker 2: I think a lot of our music for a long time,
- 6:45Speaker 2: at least before this came off better live than it
- 6:48Speaker 2: did recorded. So I think we finally just like figured
- 6:51Speaker 2: out how we want to do it by ourselves, and
- 6:54Speaker 2: how we want it to sound from our point of
- 6:56Speaker 2: view and everything like that. So it's kind of just
- 6:58Speaker 2: a build up of things over time.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yeah, And how would you say, I hardly know how
- 7:04Speaker 4: a difference music VIDIA twenty twenty two debut EP, L Spaceman.
- 7:11Speaker 1: They're probably a lot more.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Like the songs are a bit more evolved, Like L
- 7:17Speaker 2: Spaceman was the first name of our band, so that
- 7:20Speaker 2: kind of that EP is kind of like a homage
- 7:23Speaker 2: to the older songs and the stuff that we just
- 7:25Speaker 2: kind of wanted to get out of the back catalog
- 7:27Speaker 2: so we could focus on.
- 7:31Speaker 4: So someone someone's new to the band Bloody Ripper, give
- 7:35Speaker 4: us three songs for him to listen to to get
- 7:36Speaker 4: to know you a bit better.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Oh, plants would be one, surely.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I re Conpliants is probably a good one. The final
- 7:47Speaker 2: song on the album, it's called unentitled. That's pretty cool one.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I reckon.
- 7:53Speaker 5: From the EPH maybe wasted or Reset that's a pretty
- 7:59Speaker 5: cool one, yeah, from the EP?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Yeah, very cool. And have you got any shows coming
- 8:04Speaker 3: up where people can catch your live?
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got a aurbut launch this Saturday, fourteenth of
- 8:10Speaker 2: December at Stay Gold in.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Brunswick, Victoria, Australia.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Where could people find out about that show? You gets
- 8:21Speaker 3: find out more about a band?
- 8:23Speaker 2: There's tickets on event bright or on the link in
- 8:26Speaker 2: our Instagram bio. Like you'll see all the news of
- 8:29Speaker 2: us posting stuff and all the stuff we're doing on
- 8:31Speaker 2: our Instagram.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Band Facebook as well. Yeah, and then.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got a gig on the first effeb of
- 8:41Speaker 2: the retreat as well.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Beatiful all right, guys, Well, thanks very much for a
- 8:46Speaker 4: good time. The album I Hardly Know Her is out today.
- 8:49Speaker 4: She's a decent slave of rock punk goodness guys, So
