- 0:34Hello and welcome back. This is the More Carbs podcast.
- 0:37We are a team of dietitians and we talk every Thursday about
- 0:40sports nutrition for the girlies.
- 0:42My name is Jenna and I host this podcast.
- 0:44And my name is Riley. You'll also see me on this
- 0:46podcast. I am the owner and founder of
- 0:48Steady State Performance Nutrition.
- 0:50We specialize in helping female athletes recover from low energy
- 0:53availability and together along with Lily Rhymer, we are team
- 0:55steady state. Before we get into today's
- 0:57episode, we are going to do our high and low.
- 0:59So sharing just a a little bit about our week, the good and the
- 1:01parts we would have gone a little bit differently.
- 1:03As always. Riley, can you kick us off?
- 1:04Hello. Everybody welcome back and we're
- 1:06so excited to chat with you this week.
- 1:08My high is that we're taking Charlie to Disney World in two
- 1:13weeks. We do a family vacation every
- 1:15single year with my in laws. This year we're going to Disney
- 1:19World. So we're super excited to go to,
- 1:22we're calling it Mickey Mouse's house in a couple of weeks and
- 1:25we're just getting everything like prepped and prepared right
- 1:28now. I love that you guys are calling
- 1:29it Mickey Mouse House. That's so fun.
- 1:32What are you looking forward to most about the trip?
- 1:35Well, I can tell you what I'm not looking forward to the most
- 1:37and that is the drive from North Carolina to Orlando.
- 1:40So I'm not maybe looking forward to that, but I am so excited to
- 1:45bring Charlie and it kind of experienced Disney through her
- 1:48eyes. We were annual pass holders when
- 1:50we lived in California, so we did go to Disneyland a lot.
- 1:53So we're pretty familiar with like the Disney experience and
- 1:55obviously, you know, world is different than land, but we are
- 1:58really excited. To.
- 2:00Bring her there and just kind of experience it as a kid.
- 2:04I would say probably what we're most excited about is we're
- 2:06doing like some character dining experiences, which is something
- 2:09that I've never done. Seeing it through her eyes is
- 2:12definitely like the number one thing.
- 2:14I would assume so. That's so exciting, yeah.
- 2:16My low is related to running. I have a race coming up very
- 2:20soon. I have 1/2 marathon coming up.
- 2:22A couple of weeks ago I did a like preview race.
- 2:25I'm sure if you've ever done that, but they let you run part
- 2:28of the course. It was actually super fun.
- 2:30They did this like little like event.
- 2:32It was like yoga and they had coffee and beer and I don't
- 2:35really drink, but they had, you know, beer available because
- 2:38it's hosted at a brewery. And then they had different
- 2:41vendors and stuff. And it was just like a really
- 2:42fun like community event. It was like an 8 mile section of
- 2:46the course and the course is super hilly.
- 2:47So it was nice to go and like just see the hills and there
- 2:51there was a couple of like friends that were running it as
- 2:54well. And I ended up like running with
- 2:56one of my friends. And the low actually has to do
- 2:59with something that happened after so with his wife.
- 3:02And this sounds really bad so far, but basically like I said
- 3:05right there, this was like a preview for the race.
- 3:07So they had a bunch of different sponsors there.
- 3:09And one of the sponsors was this recovery water.
- 3:12You might know where I'm going with this.
- 3:14Yes. Uh oh, right.
- 3:15I ended up doing like 8 miles and then I did a couple more
- 3:17miles because I needed to hit mileage for the week.
- 3:19So I got back to the event and everybody was like standing
- 3:22around trying this recovery water.
- 3:24That was one of the sponsors and somebody offered me like a
- 3:27recovery water and I asked them. I was like, what's in the water?
- 3:32And I started listening a bunch of like random shenanigans and I
- 3:35go, how many carbs is in it? Because I immediately have my
- 3:38sports dietitian like lens on. And I'm like, if this is a
- 3:41recovery water, I need fluid obviously, but I need sodium and
- 3:45I mainly need carbohydrates because to be honest, it's
- 3:48probably going to taste kind of funky.
- 3:49And like if it doesn't have carbohydrates on it, I'm not
- 3:52really wasting my time because I struggle with appetite
- 3:55afterwards. And I'm like, I need to make
- 3:57sure that I'm getting in my carbohydrates and making the
- 3:59most out of what's going into my body.
- 4:01The Rep answered back and said it has 11 grams of carbohydrates
- 4:06in it. And I go, are you serious?
- 4:08And everybody looked at me because everybody took it as I
- 4:13was complaining that there was too many carbs in the water
- 4:17because there was 11 grams of carbohydrates.
- 4:19But in actuality, I was upset because there was only 11 grams
- 4:24of carbs. And I just got like a lots of
- 4:27weird looks, especially from like some of the wives of some
- 4:30like our friends. And they were just like confused
- 4:32because like, well, she's a dietitian.
- 4:33And then now she's like hating on carbohydrates.
- 4:36So it was a misunderstanding, but I didn't like I couldn't
- 4:38explain myself. It was just so, I don't know, it
- 4:40was just like a face palm moment where I was expecting more
- 4:44carbohydrates. That happened so frequently in
- 4:46the world of like running where like there's the booths or the
- 4:50the Expo and there's always like new product.
- 4:52The best part about this product is that it doesn't have any
- 4:54carbohydrate in and I'm like, well, then I don't want it
- 4:57because like that's what I'm looking for right now is how can
- 4:59I Max maximize my carbohydrate intake before, during and then
- 5:03after I run Because like this is the more carbs podcast.
- 5:05Obviously we love carbohydrate here, but like that's what we're
- 5:07looking for in terms of helping with recovery, helping with
- 5:10performance. I know that feeling.
- 5:12Yeah, and I just like, hate how I came off because, like, I'm
- 5:15the biggest carb advocate there is out there and I look like a
- 5:19carb snob. And I was like, but I was like,
- 5:21I'm not going to go into this whole explanation like nobody is
- 5:23ready for this right now. My high and low, it's the same
- 5:25subject and that's my hair. I want to talk about my hair for
- 5:28my high and low. My low is that every time I go
- 5:31and get my hair cut I leave the salon and I'm like this is the
- 5:35greatest haircut I have ever received in my life.
- 5:38I love the way my hair looks. I'm so happy with getting my
- 5:40hair cut but then I can never style the way that she cuts my
- 5:44hair the same way that it looks when I leave the salon and I'm
- 5:47like well now these pieces are too short and I need to tie them
- 5:50back in order to go run. I get so frustrated because I'm
- 5:54like, why did it look so good before I washed it and now it
- 5:57looks absolutely horrific and I'm like, I don't know.
- 6:00I don't know. How is that possible?
- 6:02How can it look so good and then so bad so fast?
- 6:05It is a phenomenon like it happens to me too when we have
- 6:08completely different hairstyles and like haircuts, hair color
- 6:12like it's, it's this phenomenon. I don't know what it is.
- 6:15I also feel like when you get your haircut and they shampoo it
- 6:18and they condition it, like you don't have to wash your hair for
- 6:21like so long and it is just a different experience than like
- 6:25your day-to-day these. Pieces that she cuts when she
- 6:28cuts them up front, like they look So when she first cuts
- 6:30them, but then the next day I'm like, what is happening?
- 6:33My high, on the other hand, has to do with how long I can go
- 6:36without washing my hair. Because if you know me, if
- 6:39you've ever seen a photo of me, if you're watching the video
- 6:41feed, you know, I have fairly long hair.
- 6:43So a hair washing day for me is a it's a workout.
- 6:46It is an upper body workout for me to wash my hair, blow dry my
- 6:50hair and all of those things. I will put it off for as long as
- 6:53I possibly can because I hate washing my hair.
- 6:56But at the same time, I run. I live in Arizona.
- 6:58I get very sweaty. I'm not a Unicorn.
- 7:00I sweat when I run, I sweat when I work out.
- 7:03So I feel like I have to wash my hair fairly frequently, which is
- 7:05a bummer for me because I hate doing it.
- 7:08However, I was heavily influenced to purchase a new
- 7:12style of dry shampoo and I am obsessed with it.
- 7:16It is way too expensive, let's just get that out of the way.
- 7:18But it is perhaps the biggest life changing hair product I
- 7:22have ever purchased in my life. This one is this like a spritz?
- 7:26Like it goes on wet to your hair and it's specifically for sweaty
- 7:31and oily hair. So like for people who might be
- 7:34active or in really warm climates or something like that.
- 7:38And then I don't know if you're supposed to, but I kind of blow
- 7:41dry my hair after I put it in there and it dries like I've
- 7:45just taken a shower. It's insane.
- 7:48But it's the K-18 wet to dry dry shampoo or like dry shower or
- 7:54something or other. I'll send it to you.
- 7:55I'll link it in the podcast show notes for if there's anybody
- 7:58listening who also wants to go an extended period of time
- 8:01without washing your hair. It has truly changed my life
- 8:04because I can go an extra like day or two without having washed
- 8:07my hair. I hate washing.
- 8:09I hate washing. One of the many burdens of life.
- 8:12And I could go on and on about how washing my hair drives me
- 8:14bananas. But instead, we're going to have
- 8:17Lily Reimer, our other dietitian here at Team Steady State, on
- 8:20the podcast today to do what drives us bananas in the world
- 8:22of nutrition versus just what drives me bananas as a person.
- 8:25We hope you enjoyed today's episode.
- 8:27On today's episode, we have Riley, Lily, and myself to talk
- 8:30about what drives us bananas, talking about the things that we
- 8:33saw in the sports nutrition world, in the nutrition world,
- 8:36out in the world that absolutely drove us bananas.
- 8:38Lily, you have graciously agreed to go 1st and I'm really excited
- 8:42to hear what you have to say because you already said you
- 8:43were fired up this morning. Yes I'm ready, it's been on my
- 8:47brain pretty much non-stop the past couple of days and I know
- 8:51in the past I've been our TikTok correspondent.
- 8:54Well I've officially switched over to Reddit.
- 8:58Not really something I ever thought I'd say, but I have.
- 9:00If you're listening, I actually do a Reddit Q&A every Friday on
- 9:05a common HA recovery thread. So if you have questions and you
- 9:09want to come hang out, please do.
- 9:11With opening up this can of worms of presenting myself as a
- 9:15dietitian in an HA recovery thread, I do get a lot of
- 9:19questions. And with that we also get some
- 9:23haters. So I completely understand that
- 9:26there are multiple ways to go about period recovery and that
- 9:29is what we really preach here at Steady State Performance
- 9:31Nutrition is that one approach does not fit all.
- 9:35And something that I have really encountered in my work on the
- 9:39Reddit threads is that we tend to take it to the extremes when
- 9:44it comes to period recovery. Don't want to say it's teams,
- 9:47but whether you are a person who all in worked for you and you
- 9:51really advocate for that or you're someone who continued
- 9:54training in your period recovery journey, both of them work.
- 9:57There's not a right way to do it.
- 9:58It just depends on you and your lifestyle.
- 10:01But we tend to have kind of extremes on either side and that
- 10:06leads to some discourse on the threads.
- 10:08So I just wanted to clear it up that when we say we are allowing
- 10:13training and period recovery, we are not allowing our athletes or
- 10:17advocate for any athlete to run themselves into the ground.
- 10:22There is an aspect of training and period recovery that can be
- 10:26done in a balance because when we are treating HA, we are
- 10:30focusing on the energy balance equation.
- 10:33Energy out, of course, comes out more in training.
- 10:36Energy in is the food we take. So it is possible to correct the
- 10:40energy balance equation when we are still training if we
- 10:44increase our energy in. So that's what's driving me
- 10:47bananas is sometimes I feel like there are people out there who
- 10:51believe when they see that we allow training, that we just are
- 10:55reinforcing the bad behaviors and bad relationship with
- 10:59exercise when that truly is not the case.
- 11:02And that's all we are advocating for is an individualized
- 11:06approach. Off my soapbox.
- 11:07Now I have so many points that I want to make off of this.
- 11:10Riley, do you want to go first? Because I'm a fearful I'm going
- 11:12to talk for 20 minutes. Like once I get going, like I'm
- 11:15not going to stop. So like please floor is.
- 11:17All yours. The first thing I want to say is
- 11:20like the big sister Jean in me starts to kind of come out when
- 11:24I hear that Lily is taking heat on a public platform.
- 11:28Because working with Lily, knowing Lily, being friends with
- 11:31Lily, she is the absolute sweetest, kindest, most loving
- 11:35person I maybe have ever met in my entire life.
- 11:38And the fact that anyone would say anything that is rude or
- 11:41mean or just not kind to her makes me just want to show up in
- 11:46a way like I have never shown up before.
- 11:48Like I get so protective over like the people in my life that
- 11:50I love. I'm not trying to say it's
- 11:52because you're younger or anything like that, but like if
- 11:54it was happening to Riley, I would feel the same way of just
- 11:56like wanting to protect, like your peace because that take a
- 12:00toll on someone emotionally. And like, thank you for being
- 12:03out there and like doing the work that you're doing as far as
- 12:05just like talking about this on a platform, you know, allows
- 12:08people to hide behind a username that they can say whatever they
- 12:11want and feel like they can get away with it.
- 12:13And like just makes me so angry that somebody would say
- 12:15something to you. I'm like, it doesn't even matter
- 12:17the subject. I'm like, no, like Lily is so
- 12:19sweet and so kind and she's not going to say anything to lead
- 12:22you astray. So like that bothers me out of
- 12:24the gate that there's anyone that would just be mean to you.
- 12:27And I don't like that as far as the subject or the topic that we
- 12:30are talking about, we aren't encouraging that you increase
- 12:34your training during period recovery.
- 12:36However, we have to give athletes, especially those who
- 12:40are contractually obligated through sport on a scholarship,
- 12:44potentially working towards getting a scholarship because
- 12:46that might be the only way that they can attend university.
- 12:49We need to be giving them an option because if we just look
- 12:52at all of those young women and say to them your only option is
- 12:55to stop this, we're doing them a huge disservice.
- 12:58That's why we exist as a team because there are so many
- 13:02different scenarios. And just because maybe you
- 13:05needed to take the all in approach or to remove exercise
- 13:08completely because disordered relationship with exercise is
- 13:10something that you were dealing with.
- 13:12It doesn't mean that everyone is because everybody is different
- 13:15and everybody's journey is so unique and individualized to
- 13:18them. And oh good one to bring with
- 13:20like the heat to start Lily. I feel strongly already.
- 13:24Well, thanks for saying all those kind words about me and I
- 13:27think that it shows the negativity on that thread was
- 13:30there way before I even started posting.
- 13:33And so I also am feeling big sister like with all of the
- 13:37women in this thread who are getting publicly shamed for
- 13:40wanting to continue exercise. Of course we don't like the
- 13:44negative comments and all those things, but it also is bringing
- 13:47light that there is more than one way to do period recovery.
- 13:51And so I'm very grateful to be able to spend time in that space
- 13:54and answer questions in that thread.
- 13:57So glad that you brought this up too, because oftentimes people
- 14:01assume that we're like against all in and that's not what we're
- 14:05doing on this podcast. We are giving you an alternative
- 14:08and we're also talking about how individualized this process is
- 14:13and how everybody needs to take a different approach.
- 14:16It's horrible woman's healthcare to just prescribing A1 size fits
- 14:21all because that is not the case.
- 14:23Yes, is a serious issue. And the way to solve HA is very
- 14:29similar, right? We, like Lily said, we have to
- 14:31overcome that energy deficit. But there's not just one way to
- 14:34do that. And so many women, when they
- 14:37look online or they look at Reddit or they Google HA
- 14:40recovery, they're only being told one way to do something.
- 14:44It's just not everybody's the same, yes.
- 14:46And I think that that's something that has become more
- 14:49of a popular thing when we're thinking of medicine, especially
- 14:52in this space is it's kind of been this awakening that.
- 14:56And it's something that we've talked about on the podcast
- 14:58before. You guys interviewed Dr. Hill a
- 15:00couple months ago about how birth control is not a
- 15:03one-size-fits-all approach either.
- 15:05And so I don't know how we can assume that nutrition is the
- 15:09same way either. Nothing is 1 size fits all when
- 15:12it comes to healthcare and HA recovery.
- 15:14I also, I've been on Reddit as well and of course I have to go
- 15:18and support Lily and she has been like such a baller with
- 15:21like the approach that she has taken on Reddit and answering
- 15:24all of those questions. Such an amazing resource.
- 15:27And so of course I'm lurking and I'm looking at comments and one
- 15:31of the craziest comments on there.
- 15:32Not craziest, but I thought it was a really good comparison.
- 15:35And she actually brought up like HA versus like Ed, like erectile
- 15:40dysfunction, because she was saying when you go to those
- 15:42threads, there's all these different ideas.
- 15:45And like, I didn't personally go to that thread, like I'm good, I
- 15:47don't need to go there. But she was talking about, and I
- 15:50just assume it was a she, but she was talking about how
- 15:53there's all these different ideas and different ways to, you
- 15:56know, solve Ed. And she said that she was
- 15:58comparing that because that was a male specific issue versus a
- 16:02female specific issue. And she was talking about how
- 16:05when you go to the hypothalamic amenorrhea recovery page,
- 16:09everybody's like, there's only one way to do this.
- 16:11There's one way to recover. But when you look at maybe like
- 16:13a male specific issue or you look at other disease states,
- 16:16there's lots of different ways and different things that people
- 16:19are trying to help solve these problems.
- 16:22My gosh, Riley, I'm so glad you brought set that up because I
- 16:25think about, you know, you went through a period that you were
- 16:28very, very sick during pregnancy and there were so many
- 16:31interventions, options and things for you to try to figure
- 16:34out how you could help your pregnancy specific nausea and
- 16:38what you responded well to might be different from what someone
- 16:41else responds well to. And like the things that made
- 16:43you feel better. Like I think I think it was blue
- 16:46slushies was something that you could tolerate really well.
- 16:49Might not be the same for everybody, but like that's what
- 16:51worked for you and your body and like like that's a very
- 16:54nutrition related situation that everything that you did that
- 16:58then somebody else who comes to you and says, I'm really having
- 17:01really bad pregnancy nausea. You look at them and go just go
- 17:03get a blue slushie like that'll cure you.
- 17:05That'll do it for you. Because chances are high that
- 17:07might not be the food that they tell you.
- 17:09It wasn't what it was probably like it was.
- 17:11I'm just looking because it's so timely, because yesterday I was
- 17:14at the grocery store in the afternoon and like the blue
- 17:17slushies are at McDonald's and it was like across the street
- 17:20from a McDonald's and I was like, do I go and get a blue
- 17:23slushie? Like I, I haven't had one in
- 17:25three years. I like, haven't even thought
- 17:27about them. And I was like, I was like kind
- 17:28of thirsty. It's like hot now here, which is
- 17:30crazy. And so I was like, do I go get
- 17:32one? I didn't, but I just like, it's
- 17:34so funny that you brought that up because like in my brain
- 17:36yesterday, I was like, do I go get like the blue icy or like
- 17:40the blue slushy? I just thought that's so funny
- 17:42that you brought that up. Well.
- 17:42That's like what I think of is like there are so many different
- 17:45tips and tricks and things like that out there.
- 17:47And if you googled that, you'd probably get like 10 different
- 17:50ideas from people who were like, this really helped me.
- 17:52Maybe it will help you too. Why don't we apply that the same
- 17:56way? Like why are we so strict that
- 17:58there is only one method to solve this problem?
- 18:02Especially because it's nutrition related.
- 18:04And I tell all the clients that I work with when I'm like, OK,
- 18:06we're going to try this option because this fulfills our goal
- 18:10requirement that we're looking for.
- 18:11But the good news is if this we try this and you don't like
- 18:14this, it doesn't work for you. This is nutrition.
- 18:16There is 9 times out of 10 something else we can try
- 18:19instead that you might like better.
- 18:21So like, for example, I had somebody yesterday who was
- 18:22trying to do a glass of milk with her dinner and she's like
- 18:25Jenna, I just, I can't do it. I'm not remembering it.
- 18:27It's not working. So we swapped it out for
- 18:29something else that's now working a lot better for her.
- 18:32There are different ways to do even the smallest bits of
- 18:34nutrition. Riley, what's driving you
- 18:36bananas? Mine seems so trivial now.
- 18:38I was at the grocery store yesterday kind of again kind of
- 18:41timely and I was at Publix. I don't know if y'all have
- 18:44Publix but. I don't have Publix but I know
- 18:46Publix and I'm envious. I love Publix, it is a little
- 18:49expensive, but I do love Publix and I was just popping in there
- 18:52because I needed to get something to drink.
- 18:53Like this is again like why? I was on the blue icy thing and
- 18:57again, I never have those. I don't know what I was.
- 19:00Why am I yesterday? It was so weird.
- 19:01I haven't had one like I said in a long time, but I walk into
- 19:04Publix. At least the Publix I go to
- 19:06always does a really good job of like throwing out sales like as
- 19:10soon as you walk in like you walk in and there's like all
- 19:12these products that like are for sale that week.
- 19:15They do a really good job. So I'm a bargain hunter.
- 19:18So I walk over. I will have to share a picture
- 19:20of this with you guys. But the big sale that they were
- 19:23having was this product called Egg Life.
- 19:27Have you guys heard of Egg Life? No, but it makes a little.
- 19:30Nervy Egg Life is a pasta that instead of being made with
- 19:35flour, it's made with eggs. Your face is, per serving, 4
- 19:41grams of carbs and 19 grams of protein.
- 19:44You don't boil it, you just heat it up for 5 minutes.
- 19:48So is it just eggs shaped like noodles?
- 19:51Like is there any? Is there anything else to it
- 19:53like? I took a picture of it, but I've
- 19:55tried to pull up the ingredients facts.
- 19:57The first two ingredients are egg whites and egg yolk Supper.
- 20:02So you're having eggs with pasta sauce on top?
- 20:05Which I'm not mad about like an egg and pasta situation.
- 20:09I know that y'all might be like super grossed out by this but
- 20:12like I sometimes will do like a Sunnyside egg with a pasta like
- 20:16kind of like a carbonara but like I don't want to be that
- 20:19fancy. I'm not mad about like an egg
- 20:21pasta situation, but like, eggs aren't pasta.
- 20:23That's like, really insulting to pasta across the globe.
- 20:27Yeah, but like, also why? Yeah, who thought of this?
- 20:30A mediocre bald white man, probably, I don't know name, is
- 20:34so mad. This is the kind of product that
- 20:36I fear falls into the wrong hands when working in period
- 20:41recovery. Because if I'm saying, OK, we're
- 20:43having a serving of pasta at dinner and that's our goal for
- 20:46the week, and this is the pasta that that person picks up.
- 20:49Exactly. Yeah.
- 20:50We're not accomplishing the goal of getting in carbohydrate.
- 20:53OK, here's oh, here's our ingredients guys.
- 20:55Here's our ingredients. Egg whites, egg yolks on Jack
- 20:58fiber, KONJAC fiber, Zanzan gum, natural flavor, and a
- 21:04preservative. I've actually never seen this
- 21:06preservative. No wonder people are confused.
- 21:08Like when I look at this nutrition facts panel as a
- 21:11dietitian, I'm like, how is this a quality product right here?
- 21:14I'm not mad about eggs, but like this isn't healthy with air
- 21:18quotes. Like why are you guys demonizing
- 21:21a great quality pasta and you are OK with this?
- 21:24It's just so confusing, you know?
- 21:26I'm going to bet too that that probably wasn't even on sale,
- 21:28was probably like not that inexpensive.
- 21:30Like I feel like all those products tend to be pricier.
- 21:32Well. 9 ounces of this a nine ounce container is $9.
- 21:36Just to be clear, most pasta the containers are 16 ounces and
- 21:40three dollars. I will take the latter, yeah.
- 21:43This is where I go back to, you know, the wine.
- 21:45So like if you guys have tried this and you like the taste of
- 21:48it, that's fine, go for it. But this is not a good option
- 21:53for carbohydrates. This is not a good option for a
- 21:55period recovery. I think it goes back to like the
- 21:58why, like we always talk about like peanut butter versus PB2
- 22:00like why are you choosing one over the other?
- 22:02Is it because of the taste or is it because you're trying to
- 22:04avoid fat? You know, at least the good news
- 22:06is every time I see something that just really drives me
- 22:09bananas, I have something to talk about on the podcast, kind
- 22:11of like our high and our lows. But that's my that's what's
- 22:14driving me bananas this week. Jenna, what's driving you
- 22:16bananas? OK.
- 22:17I get a lot of things, I think through ads, article suggestions
- 22:22that are related to ultra processed foods and the new
- 22:26inverted pizza pyramid triangle situation that is the new
- 22:31dietary guidelines. Because we've talked a lot about
- 22:34that on this podcast. I feel like I get quite a few
- 22:36questions, not only from maybe clients, but also family members
- 22:39and friends who are just kind of generally confused about that
- 22:42graphic. We've talked a whole bunch about
- 22:43it on this podcast. If you do have questions about
- 22:45it, refer to that episode and you will hear our full thoughts
- 22:48on that. But I saw an article the other
- 22:50day that was a list of foods. I believe it was like somewhere
- 22:53between 17 and 20 packaged foods that weren't going to be
- 22:58considered ultra processed. Now here's the situation or I
- 23:02feel like the situation is, I was under the impression from a
- 23:05lot of the verbiage around those guidelines is that packaged
- 23:09foods were the ultra processed foods.
- 23:11So I was super curious to see what this person was deeming as
- 23:16ones that were OK packaged and processed but not necessarily
- 23:20ultra processed. So I went to this list and it's
- 23:23a lot of the products that we would expect to see from like a
- 23:26healthier standpoint. Not that any of these products
- 23:29are necessarily bad or ones that I don't enjoy having on
- 23:31occasion, but it was like instead of a Lay's potato chips,
- 23:34you have Siete chips. Instead of a Chewy granola bar,
- 23:39you have a Lara bar. Instead of the regular Cheerios,
- 23:43you have Magic Spoon Cheerios and things like that.
- 23:47That was a lot of like the health branded products.
- 23:50I was just like kind of surprised, but not surprised and
- 23:53just a little bit mad that we're like, OK, here's a list of these
- 23:56way more expensive food items that can essentially do the same
- 24:00thing as these other less expensive items for the most
- 24:04part, and they're going to be OK because they're health branded
- 24:08versus this is not Lily. It really reminded me of the
- 24:10last what drives us bananas episode where you talk about the
- 24:13vital farms eggs and how packaging and the marketing
- 24:16around those makes people believe that there are these
- 24:19like super healthy eggs or like they're somehow healthier than
- 24:22other eggs. And I think that the same thing
- 24:25was kind of happening in this article where it was like these
- 24:28food products that have just been labeled or look healthier,
- 24:32like a Lara bars package looks a lot different from like pop
- 24:35Tarts packaging. If we're being completely
- 24:37honest, that's it's going to be OK, but some of these other
- 24:40things that maybe go through just as much processing or
- 24:42packaging aren't. I think it's so interesting
- 24:45because hearing you explain like that article, it feels like to
- 24:49me they're already kind of backtracking a little bit on
- 24:53what ultra process kind of almost trying to deal with that
- 24:56health Halo that they created themselves of ultra processed
- 24:59food when realistically ultra processed food.
- 25:02Like that's just a definition of what goes into a food.
- 25:06Not necessarily. Like yes, both chips are
- 25:09actually ultra processed. Like that is what the food is,
- 25:13but you've decided to push the messaging that ultra processed
- 25:16is in no way ever fits into any type of diet.
- 25:20That then you have these big food industries that make a lot
- 25:24of money off of these products that they market as healthy and
- 25:27are now losing money because they're considered ultra
- 25:29processed. That's a really good point.
- 25:31Stupid egg life pasta would be on that list.
- 25:34Right. Literally, I think it goes back
- 25:37to like the marketing is just so good.
- 25:40It is so good. I have run into this so many
- 25:44times when I'm doing like team contracts or I'm doing team
- 25:48consultations and I'm suggesting like athletes fuel on the court
- 25:53or field or just within their sport.
- 25:55I say court because I have this memory that literally like just
- 25:59sticks out in my brain and it's a little bit of a story.
- 26:02So if you don't mind, I'm going to share it.
- 26:03When I was working in college athletics, I suggested to one of
- 26:07our tennis teams that they needed to have like on court
- 26:11fuel. I was suggesting fruit snacks
- 26:13because we were on a very big budget and fruit snacks are a
- 26:18relatively cheap option. I remember the coaching staff
- 26:21actually went to my boss because they were upset that I was
- 26:26recommending fruit snacks and they wanted honey Stinger
- 26:31gummies and they said I was like trying to poison their team.
- 26:34Oh my goodness. And honey Stinger gummies.
- 26:37Nothing wrong with honey Eastinger.
- 26:38I love their products are three times the price.
- 26:42At the end of the day, if the point of that was to get
- 26:45carbohydrates in these tennis players, which I'm going to go
- 26:47down the limb here and say that it was not a lot of difference
- 26:50as far as carbohydrates in one versus carbohydrates in the
- 26:53other, they both get the job done.
- 26:54So we had to have a really big science lesson with coaching
- 26:57staff. But again, like, you have to
- 26:59play the game a little bit. And so, you know, I always like
- 27:02to kind of like go back to like the facts.
- 27:04And I did some product comparisons and I was like,
- 27:06look, the 1st and ingredient and Hunter Stinger gummies are the
- 27:10same first ingredient as marshmallows.
- 27:12It is literally all kind of the same thing.
- 27:14It's all simple carbohydrates. If you want to provide more
- 27:18carbohydrates to your team, if you want to provide more
- 27:21resources for your team, then we have to go with a cheaper, not
- 27:25as health branded option. It's going to be the same thing.
- 27:28And don't worry, they still picked Honey Stinger gum.
- 27:31Of course they did. But this is not what drives me
- 27:34bananas. It's what drives you banana.
- 27:35So. But I just had to tell that
- 27:36story because the marketing is so good.
- 27:39And it really is, I have a number of collegiate runners
- 27:42that I work with who we're trying to implement some intra
- 27:45run fuel with. And a lot of them I do recommend
- 27:47starting with gummy snacks or some type of fruit snack pack
- 27:50because they're incredibly affordable.
- 27:52These are college students we're talking about and oftentimes
- 27:54they're available at a fueling station.
- 27:56And so the number of them that come back to me and say, should
- 27:58I be doing a gel or a goo instead?
- 28:01My coach said that's better or I heard that's better or like it's
- 28:04running specific and we go through the exact same
- 28:06conversation as far as let's look at what these have, let's
- 28:09look at the goal of this product.
- 28:11Let's look at the cost comparison, like let's compare
- 28:13the two and what we're trying to accomplish with this product.
- 28:16I do want to bring up something that kind of Lily brought up
- 28:18actually in her what drives her bananas because people might be
- 28:22listening And now people think it's like we're supporting like
- 28:251 extreme and that's not what we're doing.
- 28:27And I think that's what happens when we talk about like easy
- 28:30accessible fuel. We talk about ultra processed
- 28:32foods. It's not necessarily like one or
- 28:35the other. It's not like we're saying
- 28:36ignore that entire list. It's just that sometimes we need
- 28:40to look at what's actually going on.
- 28:42Why are things getting recommended?
- 28:45Is it marketing or is it the truth?
- 28:47Because there's so much marketing and nutrition, but not
- 28:50a lot of like, truth telling. Oh I'm so glad you said that.
- 28:53That's such a good point to bring up because I use Welch's
- 28:55fruit snacks to fuel some of my runs or the Black First gummy
- 28:58bears to fuel some of my runs. But I also use gels because gels
- 29:01are what's easier for me to take on race day.
- 29:03So I have to practice with both. But like both exist within my
- 29:06fueling plan. Same with like I posted the
- 29:08other day about how I got like these organic fruit strip things
- 29:12from Costco that are easy carbs and essentially all it is, is
- 29:14just dried fruit mashed into a bar.
- 29:16But like I will have those and I will still have Welch's fruit
- 29:19snacks before I go for a run because they're both just
- 29:22carbohydrates and that's what I'm looking for at the end of
- 29:24the day. And it's not that I'm
- 29:25exclusively picking one or exclusively pushing the other.
- 29:28Nutrition is pretty simple 1 when it comes down to us talking
- 29:31about just like our macro nutrients and our timing around
- 29:34exercise, we just want you to do whatever works best for you.
- 29:37I couldn't think of a better way to end this podcast.
- 29:39Thank you, Lily, for saying that.
- 29:41As always, if there are things that you saw or you heard that
- 29:44absolutely drove you bananas, we 100% want to know about it.
