Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Activity at Iran nuke site draws Trump warning DON’T ‘GET CUTE’
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New signs Iran may be hardening a nuclear site. President
- 0:04Speaker 1: Trump has threatened to strike. Fresh satellite images seen there
- 0:08Speaker 1: show more dirt piled up over tunnel entrances at Pickaxe Mountain,
- 0:12Speaker 1: adding protection against a possible airstrike. Let's bring in now
- 0:16Speaker 1: four-star General Joseph Patel, former commander of CENTCOM. Welcome to you, sir.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Thank you for being here. So what about this new
- 0:23Speaker 1: activity at this Iran nuclear site, as it is drawing
- 0:26Speaker 1: a new warning from the president?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, Sandra. It's good to be with you again. Well,
- 0:32Speaker 2: this is further evidence here that Iran is trying to,
- 0:37Speaker 2: if not rebuild the program right now, at least prepare
- 0:42Speaker 2: the facilities so they can continue to pursue this approach
- 0:47Speaker 2: well into the future. The location you're talking about, Pickaxe Mountain,
- 0:50Speaker 2: is in the general vicinity of Natanz, but it's also
- 0:54Speaker 2: a mountain that's about 2,000 feet higher than Fordow, one
- 0:58Speaker 2: of the sites we destroyed last year. And so it
- 1:02Speaker 2: gives Iran the ability to dig deeper, burrow deeper, to
- 1:06Speaker 2: protect their activity at that location.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Because the last time we saw President Trump make public
- 1:13Speaker 1: remarks about Pickaxe Mountain was September 9th, and he said this.
- 1:18Speaker 1: We can read it from space. Can you believe this?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Thousands of miles away and we're reading somebody's. We know
- 1:24Speaker 1: exactly what's going on.
- 1:26Speaker 3: But we notice there's a little activity at pickaxe.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I would advise Iran not to get cute because we
- 1:32Speaker 1: will have to hit them very hard. We have no choice.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:35Speaker 1: That was a good nine days ago. So we know
- 1:37Speaker 1: that this has been a focus for the president.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. And it's not just the president, but
- 1:44Speaker 2: of course, the intelligence community and the military as well.
- 1:47Speaker 2: And our extraordinary intelligence community, I'm sure, has been focused
- 1:51Speaker 2: on this and making sure we're keeping a very, very
- 1:53Speaker 2: sharp eye on this. We understand exactly what is what
- 1:56Speaker 2: is happening as much to the extent as we can
- 1:59Speaker 2: with this. So, you know, as as other things are
- 2:02Speaker 2: playing out across the across the region and in the
- 2:05Speaker 2: war with Iran, keeping our focus on this, of course,
- 2:08Speaker 2: remains very, very important.
- 2:11Speaker 1: A controversial figure in American politics right now is a streamer,
- 2:15Speaker 1: a far-left streamer, Hassan Piker, among other things. He said
- 2:22Speaker 1: this on the Middle East, and I don't often ask
- 2:24Speaker 1: you to get political, but I'll ask you to respond
- 2:27Speaker 1: to this however you will. He made the case that
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Middle East would be more stable if Iran had
- 2:33Speaker 1: nuclear weapons. Listen.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I think Iran, much like any other sovereign nation, has
- 2:41Speaker 3: a right to defend itself in order to create regional
- 2:44Speaker 3: stability in a world where mutually assured destruction is the
- 2:48Speaker 3: only way for countries to have sovereignty. Do you think
- 2:50Speaker 3: the Middle East would be more stable if Iran had
- 2:52Speaker 3: a nuclear weapon? I believe yes. I think that the
- 2:54Speaker 3: Middle East would be more stable.
- 2:56Speaker 1: With your obvious expertise, how do you respond to that?
- 3:00Speaker 2: Well, without a nuclear weapon, Iran has been the most
- 3:06Speaker 2: the biggest factor in the Middle East causing instability across
- 3:10Speaker 2: the region. They have been a promoter of a revolutionary
- 3:14Speaker 2: ideology that is extended from Tehran to Beirut and covered
- 3:20Speaker 2: many places in between. They've raised proxy organizations. They've attacked
- 3:25Speaker 2: and killed Americans and others across the region. So I
- 3:28Speaker 2: think Iran is the biggest... source of instability and terrorism
- 3:35Speaker 2: across the Middle East, no doubt in my mind.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Finally, energy plays a big role in all of this.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The Bloomberg headline reads, quote, Saudis tell European refiners they'll
- 3:43Speaker 1: get no crude next month. We know how much leverage
- 3:47Speaker 1: oil has in this war. Get your final thoughts, as
- 3:51Speaker 1: here at home, we do see that front month oil contract, WTI,
- 3:55Speaker 1: still over $ 100 a barrel today.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Yeah, the center of gravity is shifting a little bit
- 4:01Speaker 2: from the Strait of Hormuz down to the Bab el-Mandeb,
- 4:04Speaker 2: where the Houthis have exerted significant control over the Red
- 4:09Speaker 2: Sea coast along that critical choke point. So you've got
- 4:12Speaker 2: two choke points that are very vulnerable right now, plus
- 4:16Speaker 2: the bypass that Saudi Arabia has running across our country
- 4:20Speaker 2: is has been attacked. So it's a very difficult situation
- 4:23Speaker 2: right here. And Saudi Arabia is trying to find its
- 4:26Speaker 2: way out of that, working with the United States and
- 4:29Speaker 2: certainly with Gulf partners and others around the world. So
- 4:32Speaker 2: this is a very, very serious, serious situation that's likely
- 4:36Speaker 2: not going to be resolved militarily. It's likely going to
- 4:39Speaker 2: require some kind of diplomatic effort to bring this to
- 4:43Speaker 2: a conclusion.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Yeah, the European contract, the Brent contract, just over $ 103
- 4:48Speaker 1: a barrel, just a little bit higher than that WTI contract.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Great to have you here today. Thank you very much,
- 4:53Speaker 1: Joseph Patel.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Thank you.
