Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson, his book about the five months between Lincoln's election and the firing on Fort Sumter. So here's what I want to ask you, because it's the thing I couldn't stop thinking about. How does a country that knows it's heading off a cliff just keep walking toward it anyway?
• 0:24
Sophie: Hey there Sam, good to be here. And that's exactly the question Larson is chasing, right? This isn't a battle book. It's a book about the months before the war, November 1860 to April 1861, and it's really about how a nation talked itself into catastrophe. He's not asking who fired first. He's asking how everyone got to the point where firing seemed like the only option left.
• 0:49
Sam: Right. And the title comes from a British journalist, William Howard Russell, who came over to report on the crisis. He looked around and said the country was possessed by a demon of unrest. Like a fever of the imagination.
• 1:04
Sophie: Which is such a smart frame, because it's not just slavery, even though slavery is underneath almost everything. It's this diffuse thing. It's fear, it's rumor, it's the refusal to see the other side as human. Larson treats it almost like a contagion.
• 1:21
Sam: Okay, so let's start with the election itself, because that's where the fever spikes. Lincoln wins, and he doesn't get a single electoral vote from ten southern states. Not one.
• 1:32
Sophie: And here's the part that got me. Lincoln had said, over and over, publicly, that he would not touch slavery where it already existed. It was almost a refrain in his speeches. But in the South, nobody believed him.
• 1:46
Sam: They believed their own newspapers instead. Their own politicians. Their own fears.
• 1:52
Sophie: Exactly. And that's the demon doing its work. The information people trusted wasn't information at all. It was a mirror.
• 2:01
Sam: So then you've got this incredible cast Larson pulls together. There's Major Robert Anderson, the federal commander down in Charleston Harbor. And he's a fascinating guy, because he's a Kentuckian. He owns slaves himself. But he's also a US Army officer who swore an oath.
• 2:18
Sophie: He's split right down the middle. And on December 26, 1860, in the middle of the night, he moves his little garrison out of Fort Moultrie, which is basically indefensible, over to Fort Sumter, which he can actually hold.
• 2:32
Sam: And in his mind, he's preserving the peace. He's pulling his men back from a spot where they'd get overwhelmed. He thinks he's buying time for cooler heads.
• 2:42
Sophie: But the South reads it completely differently. They see it as an act of war. A betrayal by a man they trusted. And it hands the secessionists the rallying cry they'd been waiting for.
• 2:54
Sam: Which brings us to Buchanan, the outgoing president. And honestly, Sophie, I pushed back on this when I first read it, because I wanted to just call him a coward.
• 3:04
Sophie: And Larson won't let you do that, right? He's genuinely sympathetic to Buchanan. The man believed, as a matter of constitutional philosophy, that he had no power to coerce a state that chose to leave.
• 3:18
Sam: So he sits there. Federal forts get seized. Federal property gets confiscated. The authority of the government gets openly defied. And he does nothing, because he believes he can do nothing.
• 3:30
Sophie: It's not malice. It's a man trapped by his own principles at the exact moment when flexibility and boldness were what the moment demanded.
• 3:40
Sam: Okay, and then there's Charleston in December of 1860. The secession convention. And this is where I want you to slow down, because I think people picture a mob.
• 3:49
Sophie: No, and that's the key insight. It's not a mob. The fire-eaters, men like Rhett and Yancey, had been preparing this ground for decades. They saw Lincoln's election as the opportunity they'd been waiting for.
• 4:04
Sam: And the speed is the weapon. They push the ordinance of secession through on December 20 before any moderate voice can even organize.
• 4:13
Sophie: The speed itself is a kind of violence. It's a refusal to allow time for reflection. And within weeks, other states follow. By the time Lincoln takes office in March, seven states have left and formed the Confederacy.
• 4:28
Sam: And the atmosphere in Charleston during all this is so strange. There are parades. There are fireworks. There are speeches. But underneath it, there's this dread that things are moving beyond anyone's control.
• 4:41
Sophie: Because they genuinely believe they're reenacting the Revolution. They think they're patriots standing up to a tyrant, the same way their grandfathers stood up to King George.
• 4:51
Sam: And that moral certainty is what makes compromise impossible. How do you negotiate with tyranny? You can't. Once you've framed the other side as a tyrant, there's no middle ground left.
• 5:03
Sophie: Meanwhile, the North is in complete denial. They'd heard secession threats before, during the Nullification Crisis in the 1830s, again over the Compromise of 1850. And every time, it got worked out.
• 5:18
Sam: So they figure, surely this time is no different. The business community in New York is desperate to avoid conflict because war would wreck trade. Newspapers are editorializing for compromise.
• 5:31
Sophie: And the passions don't cool. They get hotter. And a huge part of that is misinformation. Southern papers print stories about northern plots to incite slave insurrections, stories that are almost entirely fabricated.
• 5:46
Sam: And northern papers print stories about southern arrogance and aggression. So each side is looking at the other through its own worst fears.
• 5:56
Sophie: The demon feeds on ignorance and fear. And there was no shortage of either.
• 6:01
Sam: So then everything narrows down to Fort Sumter. And this is the part where I was just holding my breath, because both sides know they can't back down.
• 6:11
Sophie: Right. For the Confederates, a federal fort sitting in the middle of Charleston Harbor is an intolerable insult to their sovereignty. For the Union, abandoning it is basically admitting that secession is legitimate.
• 6:24
Sam: And Lincoln, once he's in office, is threading this impossible needle. He wants to hold the fort, but he absolutely does not want to be the one who starts the war.
• 6:34
Sophie: So he comes up with this plan. He sends supplies. Not reinforcements, not munitions. Just food and water. And he tells the governor of South Carolina he's doing it.
• 6:46
Sam: Which puts the whole decision on the Confederates. Do you let a ship full of food reach hungry men? Or do you fire on it?
• 6:54
Sophie: And Beauregard and the Confederate leadership are stuck. If they let the supplies through, they look weak. If they fire, they start a war and take the blame for the first shots.
• 7:06
Sam: They demand Anderson surrender before the ship arrives. He refuses. And on the morning of April 12, 1861, they open fire.
• 7:17
Sophie: Thirty-four hours of bombardment. And when it's over, the fort is rubble, Anderson surrenders with honor, and the Civil War has begun.
• 7:26
Sam: The thing Larson refuses to do is turn this into good versus evil. The men who led the South into secession weren't monsters. They believed with their whole hearts they were right.
• 7:37
Sophie: They were profoundly wrong. But their wrongness was a failure of imagination. They couldn't picture a future where the South prospered without slavery. So they chose to break the Union instead of facing that future.
• 7:51
Sam: And he doesn't let the North off the hook either. Northern leaders were willing to guarantee slavery in the Constitution to keep the Union together. The resolve only came after Sumter. And even then, it was about preserving the Union, not ending slavery.
• 8:09
Sophie: Which is why the book reads less like history and more like a warning. Democracy is fragile. The institutions we take for granted can come apart in months. What holds a nation together isn't steel. It's trust and mutual respect.
• 8:25
Sam: And when that trust breaks, the demon takes hold. That's the thing I'm taking away from this. The path to disaster isn't paved with malice. It's paved with fear. And with people loving a way of life that can't be sustained.
