- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm Jim Hayes. We have the full panel with us today.
- 0:14Speaker 1: We have Matt Holliday, Kyle Gibson, and Lancelin. Gentlemen, how
- 0:17Speaker 1: are we doing today?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Really good?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Kyle the only one didn't give the thumbs up. Can
- 0:24Speaker 1: we get the thumbs up please so we know we
- 0:26Speaker 1: can move forward.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I just texted you guys about this. He's already telling
- 0:32Speaker 2: me what to.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Do with.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Look it. I'm a little bossy. Uh so, uh, the
- 0:39Speaker 1: off season is upon us already, a couple of moves
- 0:42Speaker 1: that have been made, but the uh uh, the big
- 0:46Speaker 1: whirlwind that's coming with trades free agent signings hasn't begun yet.
- 0:50Speaker 1: All you guys have been in this position, either a
- 0:54Speaker 1: guy who's mentioned in trade rumors or a free agent
- 0:57Speaker 1: looking for a landing spot. So I'm gonna are with you,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Matt Holiday. What is that like for players who are
- 1:04Speaker 1: waiting for that market to get set, with the first
- 1:07Speaker 1: shoe to drop, whatever it is. What's that like for
- 1:10Speaker 1: players sending at home waiting for an update from their agent?
- 1:13Speaker 4: I suppose, yeah, I mean I think it's tricky.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I mean I think the holidays play a big part
- 1:20Speaker 3: in night major league free agency. I think the the
- 1:24Speaker 3: you have the you have the GM meetings, and then
- 1:26Speaker 3: they they all seem to like take a break between
- 1:30Speaker 3: now and then like runs into Thanksgiving and then they
- 1:34Speaker 3: they take a couple take a week off for that,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and then there's a little I think they.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Have the Winter meetings and then they have.
- 1:40Speaker 3: The Christmas break, and so free agency is is is
- 1:46Speaker 3: different for everybody. I think most players would say they
- 1:51Speaker 3: wished it moved a little faster, like basketball and football,
- 1:54Speaker 3: but we have a free market, so sometimes it takes
- 1:57Speaker 3: a longer long time to the up what your market is.
- 2:03Speaker 3: In basketball and football, you kind of you know they
- 2:06Speaker 3: you know under the salary structure based on how many years, and.
- 2:11Speaker 4: It kind of is what it is.
- 2:12Speaker 3: So like basketball free agency, it pretty much everybody signs
- 2:15Speaker 3: the day it opens up to where in baseball it
- 2:19Speaker 3: could take a while. And I think that that sometimes
- 2:22Speaker 3: I always, you know, my one big free agent deal
- 2:25Speaker 3: I wanted to know by Christmas, and it didn't didn't work,
- 2:28Speaker 3: it didn't happen. But most guys I think would say
- 2:32Speaker 3: that they would love to know where their next landing
- 2:35Speaker 3: spot is by Christmas, and sometimes it happens. Sometimes a
- 2:41Speaker 3: lot of things happened at the winter meetings. Some years
- 2:43Speaker 3: it seems to go fast. Some years it seems to
- 2:46Speaker 3: go really slow. Like last year, a lot of it
- 2:50Speaker 3: was hung up on Juan Soto and then what the
- 2:52Speaker 3: fallout would be from that. So it I think, I
- 2:56Speaker 3: feel like every year it changes and how fast it
- 3:01Speaker 3: goes depending on when the big free agents sign, uh,
- 3:04Speaker 3: then the kind of trickle down effect.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Uh.
- 3:07Speaker 4: But it's I think these guys would agree.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I mean, as a player, you wanted to move and
- 3:12Speaker 3: you want to know where you're going, but.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Sometimes it takes a while.
- 3:18Speaker 5: What about you ka, what was it like.
- 3:21Speaker 2: The first couple of times, we're pretty much kind of
- 3:24Speaker 2: how Matt mentioned it, kind of it was a good
- 3:27Speaker 2: thing that, you know, I was never really a player that,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you know, was either setting a market or waiting on
- 3:32Speaker 2: a market to develop. You know, I was a you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: an average starting pitcher that eight innings and you know,
- 3:38Speaker 2: for the most part, had some some early calls, and
- 3:42Speaker 2: unfortunately it seemed like it always happened about two or
- 3:44Speaker 2: three days before Thanksgiving and then we were scrambling around
- 3:47Speaker 2: trying to get a physical before I went to family's
- 3:51Speaker 2: house for Thanksgiving, but you know, it always ended up
- 3:54Speaker 2: kind of getting done around that time, and and then
- 3:56Speaker 2: last year it was just weird, just you know, with
- 4:00Speaker 2: with not getting any offers until really really late.
- 4:02Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I agree with that every player would like for it
- 4:07Speaker 2: to kind of move move fast and figure out where
- 4:09Speaker 2: you're going, and you know, getting late to spring training
- 4:12Speaker 2: and doing all that, as Lance knows as well as
- 4:14Speaker 2: not anymore.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Lance, Yeah, I had a little bit of everything. I've
- 4:22Speaker 6: been traded this time. One off season, I signed to
- 4:27Speaker 6: free agent deals around this time, and then I had
- 4:30Speaker 6: two free agents that went into spring training and then
- 4:34Speaker 6: went into retirement. So uh, you uh, it's kind of
- 4:39Speaker 6: a crazy world.
- 4:39Speaker 5: You don't know what's going to happen. You just kind
- 4:42Speaker 5: of go with the flow.
- 4:42Speaker 6: But you know, I think in my opinion, every team,
- 4:46Speaker 6: every player, you want your roster kind of in a
- 4:49Speaker 6: good spot ready to go at the first of the year.
- 4:51Speaker 6: So I think in general everybody would like it to
- 4:54Speaker 6: speed up a little bit. This time of year is
- 4:57Speaker 6: all here say and this and that. You have a
- 4:58Speaker 6: few signings here and there. But I think as a
- 5:02Speaker 6: whole in the industry, and stuff like that. They could
- 5:05Speaker 6: do a little better job at figuring out a window
- 5:08Speaker 6: where guys can.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Kind of do this.
- 5:09Speaker 6: And I think the trade deadline or they need to
- 5:12Speaker 6: do a trade deadline in the winter.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I think that will really speed up.
- 5:15Speaker 6: I think last year the trade deadline of they were
- 5:17Speaker 6: talking about ceasing a couple other guys holding up markets
- 5:21Speaker 6: because they didn't know who was gonna get traded, and
- 5:22Speaker 6: then markets don't move. So I think to speed up
- 5:25Speaker 6: maybe a free agent situation, put a trade deadline in
- 5:28Speaker 6: the wintertime, because once you're on a team and all that,
- 5:31Speaker 6: you know, it's hey. After let's say after January fifteenth,
- 5:35Speaker 6: you're with that team until you know April, was it
- 5:39Speaker 6: April they can't trade you until April thirtieth or something
- 5:41Speaker 6: like that or April I don't remember. Once she's but
- 5:44Speaker 6: maybe put a little window there that might might help
- 5:47Speaker 6: some things out.
- 5:47Speaker 5: But all in all, you want to be ready to
- 5:49Speaker 5: go wherever you go by the first of the year
- 5:50Speaker 5: so you can get things set up.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So Kyla, you're sitting there looking at your phone trying
- 5:55Speaker 1: to get any any feel as to where you might
- 5:59Speaker 1: end up. Where you just sitting there waiting for your
- 6:01Speaker 1: agent to tell you.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I mean, I think in today's age of MLB trade
- 6:07Speaker 2: rumors and social media and people texting you, your phone's
- 6:11Speaker 2: always kind of getting some messages and blowing up, and.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Especially when rumors start flying.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You know, I was joking with a couple of people
- 6:20Speaker 2: just a couple of weeks ago about I was like,
- 6:22Speaker 2: I feel like there were times when my agent probably
- 6:24Speaker 2: wasn't very happy with me because I wasn't ready to
- 6:26Speaker 2: pick up his phone call. I wasn't ready to make
- 6:28Speaker 2: a decision, and I knew that as soon as I
- 6:30Speaker 2: picked that phone call up, it's like, all right, he's
- 6:32Speaker 2: gonna want to know what I want to do. But yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 2: I mean it's I tried to focus on, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 2: being with the family as much as possible, but you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's pretty tough sometimes when you have four or five
- 6:45Speaker 2: teams calling and you got to sit down with their
- 6:46Speaker 2: wife and kids and be like, all right, you know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: one of these opportunities look like and you kind of
- 6:50Speaker 2: have to sometimes figure it out pretty quick because those
- 6:53Speaker 2: offers can go to other players if you don't act
- 6:54Speaker 2: fast enough.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Man, I know you follow me on Twitter, but are
- 6:59Speaker 1: you looking to your phone for for updates.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, my my big free agent
- 7:07Speaker 3: year after two thousand whatever that was two thousand and nine. Yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 3: I mean I think you know somehow, you know, you
- 7:18Speaker 3: might be the last to know, Like I don't know.
- 7:20Speaker 3: You just check and see if you know what the
- 7:22Speaker 3: rumors are, and if it's a reliable source, you know,
- 7:26Speaker 3: if it's Ken Rosenthal or Jeff Passon or you know
- 7:30Speaker 3: some of these guys that cover the sport that actually
- 7:33Speaker 3: have sources, Like if they if they're saying something about
- 7:36Speaker 3: your free agency, then then like it makes you kind
- 7:39Speaker 3: of perk up or wonder what might be going on.
- 7:43Speaker 3: But most of the time your agent or you know,
- 7:46Speaker 3: is is more in the know and and is keeping
- 7:48Speaker 3: you updated on real talk or real offers. You know,
- 7:55Speaker 3: I think more more so, like when you might be
- 7:58Speaker 3: getting traded, is when I think you check. You know,
- 8:02Speaker 3: you're checking the phone to see what the rumors are
- 8:04Speaker 3: on trades more than free agency. I mean a lot
- 8:06Speaker 3: of times in free agency you nobody, nobody.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Has any more inside information than you do.
- 8:12Speaker 3: But when I got traded, you know, to the to
- 8:15Speaker 3: the cardinals from the A's like I would read, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 3: kind of what was going on and it was actually,
- 8:21Speaker 3: you know, pretty accurate. So I think that that's you know,
- 8:27Speaker 3: I don't those guys actually have sources and actually have
- 8:32Speaker 3: usually have some pretty good idea on trades.
- 8:36Speaker 1: How about you, Lance, did you ever find out about
- 8:40Speaker 1: potential trade or where you're going to end up ahead
- 8:43Speaker 1: of when your agent told you from something you read.
- 8:47Speaker 6: When I was in Chicago, I think I heard that
- 8:50Speaker 6: I was going somewhere on a day of a start,
- 8:52Speaker 6: which ended up not being true and ended up being
- 8:55Speaker 6: a place that I had to no trade too too,
- 8:57Speaker 6: And I was never even asked so if I would wait,
- 9:00Speaker 6: my not trade to that team.
- 9:01Speaker 5: So there are.
- 9:02Speaker 6: Times when people tweet things that are incorrect two and
- 9:08Speaker 6: you see it here and there. But you know, the
- 9:10Speaker 6: good ones have sources, they vet and they do the
- 9:13Speaker 6: things they need to do. So but yes, there's times
- 9:16Speaker 6: where you hear you're going places that might not be true,
- 9:20Speaker 6: and then you get to ask questions and this and that.
- 9:22Speaker 6: So it's a weird cycle. You know, you wake up
- 9:25Speaker 6: to text. I think that year I woke up to
- 9:28Speaker 6: a text saying, hey you got traded early, congratulations getting
- 9:31Speaker 6: traded or something like that, and I was like, dude,
- 9:33Speaker 6: I haven't even Yeah, I just woke up and no
- 9:36Speaker 6: one's called me. I remember calling the JIMI. He's like, yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 6: no deals done. So I don't know where they got
- 9:40Speaker 6: that from. So it's a crazy world. And then so
- 9:43Speaker 6: you got to kind of keep your your circle tight,
- 9:46Speaker 6: and then nothing's really done until you talk to a
- 9:48Speaker 6: GM and your agent. So you pay attention to some
- 9:52Speaker 6: of that stuff, but you try not to make it
- 9:53Speaker 6: affects you because.
- 9:54Speaker 5: They don't know the ins and outs of what's actually
- 9:57Speaker 5: going on.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Hey, Kyle, I think there's what five six people that
- 10:03Speaker 1: have legitimate sources that have a handle on what may
- 10:06Speaker 1: be happening. But if you read I'm hearing from a
- 10:09Speaker 1: source you're not familiar with, chances are they didn't really
- 10:13Speaker 1: hear it from a source. But if you ever picked
- 10:15Speaker 1: up on what may be ahead from for you from
- 10:19Speaker 1: reading something, no.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Not not from not really from reading something getting that
- 10:26Speaker 2: far ahead, you know. I think there's there's quite a
- 10:29Speaker 2: few times where you get a text message from somebody
- 10:31Speaker 2: and say, hey, am I hearing this?
- 10:33Speaker 4: And is it true?
- 10:34Speaker 2: And then you know, I just kind of decide to
- 10:36Speaker 2: either respond to them or not. If it's a meeting
- 10:38Speaker 2: person that you trust and I've talked to you might
- 10:43Speaker 2: respond and try to be you know, professional there. But
- 10:46Speaker 2: you know, the only other time that I would have
- 10:48Speaker 2: had any type of heads up was in Texas. You know,
- 10:53Speaker 2: I just talked with with see Why there and said, hey,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you know, if we're going on a road trip. This
- 10:57Speaker 2: is right around all Star records. Like, if we're going
- 10:59Speaker 2: on a road trip and you're hearing something, which you
- 11:01Speaker 2: mind just giving me a heads up and maybe I
- 11:02Speaker 2: can just let my wife know not that come on
- 11:04Speaker 2: the road trip here. You know, maybe I can save
- 11:07Speaker 2: her a flight with the three kids and and we
- 11:09Speaker 2: don't have to deal with that. But you know, nothing,
- 11:13Speaker 2: nothing ended up developing there until right at the deadline.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And Matt, we've talked about the potential labor stoppage coming
- 11:22Speaker 1: up with the UH with the labor agreement. What impact
- 11:25Speaker 1: do you think that's gonna have on the market being
- 11:28Speaker 1: set and teams making moves and what moves they may
- 11:31Speaker 1: or may not make.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I I don't know specifically, Like I
- 11:39Speaker 3: still got to think that. I mean, both owners and
- 11:45Speaker 3: players are making money. The industry is healthy. They're talking
- 11:49Speaker 3: about expansion, they're talking about relocating divisions, like the game
- 11:54Speaker 3: is in a healthy place, So I can't imagine.
- 11:58Speaker 4: That that you have to wait.
- 12:00Speaker 3: That too much because I think, like I think Lance,
- 12:03Speaker 3: we talked about this about how many games before the
- 12:06Speaker 3: TV they start losing money from the TV contract. I
- 12:10Speaker 3: can't imagine a strike or lockout going past that number
- 12:16Speaker 3: of games to where they start losing their their TV contracts. So, look,
- 12:22Speaker 3: could there be a delay and in that season? Uh,
- 12:25Speaker 3: not this coming season, but the next season? Uh?
- 12:29Speaker 4: I think, sure, yeah, I could.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I could buy that, But do I think it's gonna
- 12:33Speaker 3: be a completely lost season. I can't imagine that the
- 12:37Speaker 3: owners and players.
- 12:39Speaker 4: With the health of of the.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Industry could make that kind of mistake of going a
- 12:45Speaker 3: whole year without baseball.
- 12:48Speaker 4: So I don't think it's.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Going to make a big impact on on teams decision
- 12:54Speaker 3: making this offseason.
- 12:56Speaker 4: I mean, I just don't because I don't believe that.
- 13:00Speaker 3: That even if there is a lockout that's going to last,
- 13:04Speaker 3: you're still going to have to need really good players
- 13:06Speaker 3: when the lockout ends in April or whatever, Like you're
- 13:11Speaker 3: still building your roster with the idea of winning a
- 13:14Speaker 3: World Series.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Whether you're a next year team or you're three years
- 13:18Speaker 4: from now.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Team I certainly wouldn't think that that's that's in the
- 13:24Speaker 3: in the center of their plan or or in their
- 13:28Speaker 3: decision making.
- 13:29Speaker 1: But who knows, Maybe I'm wrong, Lampson, Where where do
- 13:34Speaker 1: you fall on that?
- 13:36Speaker 5: I think it depends on each team.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:38Speaker 6: If you're a team that this is your your window
- 13:40Speaker 6: to win a World Series, you might see a you know,
- 13:45Speaker 6: a run of one year deals maybe, uh stuff like that,
- 13:49Speaker 6: where you're a market that can say, hey, we don't
- 13:51Speaker 6: know what you know, what the number is going to
- 13:53Speaker 6: look like after this CVA, but we know where they're
- 13:56Speaker 6: at right now, and we know this is our window,
- 13:58Speaker 6: and you know, we don't want to lose it if
- 14:01Speaker 6: something weird happens with a full year uh. So you
- 14:04Speaker 6: can see teams shoot up, and then the teams that
- 14:06Speaker 6: don't think they're gonna win next year aren't gonna spend money,
- 14:08Speaker 6: which is kind of the going rate anyways, And that's
- 14:11Speaker 6: kind of been the problem, right if you aren't ready
- 14:14Speaker 6: to win, or or you haven't been the owner that
- 14:17Speaker 6: they told us year turn to have a window yet
- 14:20Speaker 6: and everyone else isn't spending, and so you can spend.
- 14:23Speaker 6: So it's still gonna stay in those windows, and you know,
- 14:26Speaker 6: you'll see teams do a lot of one year deals,
- 14:28Speaker 6: and I'm gonna say there'll be there could be a
- 14:30Speaker 6: lot more one year deals that are a little higher
- 14:32Speaker 6: AAVs this year than you've seen, just because of, hey,
- 14:36Speaker 6: you know, we might as well just do this if
- 14:38Speaker 6: we if we're a French team, or we're a team
- 14:40Speaker 6: that's gonna that has a good chance. So there's a
- 14:43Speaker 6: lot of different ways you can look at it. And
- 14:45Speaker 6: then you can look at the teams that are mid
- 14:47Speaker 6: markets that are like, hey, we're not gonna go top dollar,
- 14:50Speaker 6: but then they give a guy a third or fourth
- 14:53Speaker 6: year for a lower AAV just because he's the last
- 14:56Speaker 6: guy standing.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Stuff like that. So there's multiple ways teams can go
- 15:00Speaker 5: with it.
- 15:00Speaker 6: But I think the teams that are in the win
- 15:01Speaker 6: now mode, I think there's gonna be a lot more
- 15:03Speaker 6: one year deals with a little higher aav and then
- 15:05Speaker 6: they can, you know, kind of kind of cut cut,
- 15:09Speaker 6: you know, cut revenue when I guess when they need to.
- 15:12Speaker 1: In the next CVA, Kyle, how about you, I ask you,
- 15:17Speaker 1: with all due respect for your opinion.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Thank you, Jim.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I mean, I think with baseball in a good spot.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Just like you know, Matt and Lance have said, I
- 15:29Speaker 2: think it'd be kind of silly to for both sides
- 15:32Speaker 2: to not be able to negotiate in good faith and
- 15:33Speaker 2: get something done. We're adding TV deals with Netflix and
- 15:38Speaker 2: NBC back in the mix and doing so much that's
- 15:42Speaker 2: growing the game and adding revenue to the game. And
- 15:44Speaker 2: I think Baseball worldwide is in a great spot. Got
- 15:47Speaker 2: the WBC coming back up, you know, back in the Olympics.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I mean, I just I think that's Baseball's in a
- 15:53Speaker 2: great spot. And it'd be kind of unfortunate with as
- 15:57Speaker 2: the dollars are growing to not spread those dollars out
- 15:59Speaker 2: and you keep it moving in the right direction.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Knock on wood. Hopefully you're right, but who knows what's
- 16:06Speaker 1: going to happen. The one thing that is certain is
- 16:08Speaker 1: that summer is behind us now as the cold weather
- 16:12Speaker 1: is starting to kick in, and now is the time
- 16:15Speaker 1: you start thinking about that backyard. Do you want to
- 16:18Speaker 1: make it a place that everyone wants to be, a
- 16:22Speaker 1: pool for the kids, fire pit for the cool nights.
- 16:25Speaker 1: We're talking about a place that is the place to
- 16:28Speaker 1: be at Merrimack pool and outdoors. They've been bringing those
- 16:32Speaker 1: visions to life for twenty five years, family owned and operated,
- 16:36Speaker 1: proud and trusted to build your dream backyard. And they
- 16:41Speaker 1: are Saint Louis Proud, no question about it, because they're
- 16:44Speaker 1: a local company. Not just pools. We're talking about full
- 16:47Speaker 1: outdoor kitchens. We're talking about sport courts, fire features, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: we're talking about smart pool technology. That's the led lighting,
- 16:57Speaker 1: the whole shooting match from concept to completion. Merrimac Pooling

- 18:16Speaker 7: s dot com slash f o U L promo code
- 18:20Speaker 7: foul for up to fifty percent off.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Seems very fancy. All right, guys, we were talking about
- 18:28Speaker 1: the upcoming UH moves that may or may not be
- 18:31Speaker 1: made free agency. To me, one of the most interesting
- 18:35Speaker 1: things for the Cardinals is Wilson Contreras, who had a
- 18:39Speaker 1: very good year last year twenty homers think a career
- 18:42Speaker 1: high eighty RBIs Now he has a no trade clause.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And if you read the stuff where it talks about,
- 18:50Speaker 1: you know, Cardinals potentially dealing off some of the high
- 18:54Speaker 1: ticket guys. I have you see the name Wilson Contreras mentioned,
- 18:58Speaker 1: but he has a no trade and he has said
- 19:01Speaker 1: on the record and he said he's told heim Bloom
- 19:04Speaker 1: that he would like to stay, but you still see
- 19:06Speaker 1: his name mentioned. So, Matt, I'm going to ask you
- 19:10Speaker 1: about the decision making process for the Cardinals. You have
- 19:13Speaker 1: a first basement Wilson. Cantreras's coming off a very good year.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Energy guy, no question about it, one of the veterans
- 19:21Speaker 1: I have on the ball club. But he also is
- 19:23Speaker 1: doing eighteen million dollars this year, eighteen million dollars next year.
- 19:28Speaker 1: If you're a team that's trying to build for the
- 19:29Speaker 1: future and maybe trying to cut some payroll where you
- 19:33Speaker 1: can put it elsewhere in a more needed spot, they
- 19:35Speaker 1: could put Barlson, obviously at first base, where he's played
- 19:38Speaker 1: a bunch. What would you do? What do you think
- 19:40Speaker 1: the Cardinals are thinking right now?
- 19:44Speaker 3: I mean, look, everybody's for sale that we talked about before.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I mean, it's all about what you get in return.
- 19:50Speaker 3: I wouldn't give him away. I think he's too valuable.
- 19:54Speaker 3: I think he's he's an energy player. I think he's
- 19:57Speaker 3: good for young players. I think he's intense. I think
- 19:59Speaker 3: he takes every back. They can speak to that they
- 20:01Speaker 3: played with him more than I can. But here's a
- 20:04Speaker 3: guy that that comes to the field every day, wanting
- 20:06Speaker 3: to win. Plays hard is it bats means something.
- 20:10Speaker 5: To him from.
- 20:12Speaker 3: All what you know, all accounts, He's a good example,
- 20:15Speaker 3: uh for for young players. Eighteen million dollars in this
- 20:18Speaker 3: day and age and a payroll in a market beside
- 20:21Speaker 3: of the Saint Louis Is is not it's not detrimental.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's not. It's not crushing your pit payroll.
- 20:29Speaker 3: If you if you get something that you deem equal
- 20:34Speaker 3: to the value, and you know, you you get some
- 20:42Speaker 3: thing that maybe you you know, pitching or whatever you're
- 20:44Speaker 3: looking for that you think is of value, then I
- 20:47Speaker 3: would move him.
- 20:48Speaker 4: But I don't.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I don't.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I don't come into.
- 20:50Speaker 3: This offseason thinking we need to get out from under
- 20:53Speaker 3: that eighteen million. I mean, I think this guy's he's
- 20:57Speaker 3: valuable enough and brings a to the table that that's
- 21:01Speaker 3: not that's you know, it's twenty twenty five, Like they
- 21:04Speaker 3: don't have a ton of payroll they can afford to
- 21:08Speaker 3: keep him on the team. And if he brings more
- 21:11Speaker 3: value than what you're getting offered in the trade, you
- 21:14Speaker 3: don't trade him. And so I'd be interested to see
- 21:18Speaker 3: what kind of offers they get for him.
- 21:20Speaker 4: But like at the end of the day, I said
- 21:23Speaker 4: this about the whole team.
- 21:24Speaker 3: I think every player in the league except show Hey
- 21:26Speaker 3: and Aaron Judge and maybe.
- 21:28Speaker 4: A couple others, maybe screwball.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I mean, even while he's going in a three agency,
- 21:32Speaker 3: but I think every every player in the league is
- 21:34Speaker 3: tradable depending on what you get back.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Now, Kyle, I know you and Lance have been on
- 21:40Speaker 1: the record saying you think the Cardinals should keep the
- 21:44Speaker 1: veteran guys and build around them.
- 21:46Speaker 4: But you know.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Wilson Contreras pretty well. What do the Cardinals have in
- 21:50Speaker 1: him and also what would make him appealing? Do you
- 21:53Speaker 1: think for other ball clubs looking to make a deal,
- 21:56Speaker 1: certainly the Cardinals need pitching.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean think you know, the Taylor Ward and
- 22:02Speaker 2: Grayson Rodriguez trade is really interesting. I don't know if
- 22:06Speaker 2: Wilson has that value less or more. I have no idea.
- 22:09Speaker 2: I mean, he's a right handed bat with dump that
- 22:12Speaker 2: plays a really good first base and plays hard, and
- 22:16Speaker 2: except for freak injuries, you know, getting hit by a
- 22:19Speaker 2: pitcher or something, he's available most of the days. So
- 22:22Speaker 2: I mean, man, it's if you're getting that type of return,
- 22:25Speaker 2: then it's gonna be hard to not entertain and say yes.
- 22:29Speaker 2: I mean Grayson, knowing him personally, he's he's a guy
- 22:32Speaker 2: that can change his starting rotation pretty quick. So if
- 22:35Speaker 2: you're going to get a power arm or a refined
- 22:39Speaker 2: major league starting pitcher, I like being on those sides
- 22:43Speaker 2: of the trade. I don't know, you know what Matt
- 22:45Speaker 2: would think being a position player, but I like being
- 22:48Speaker 2: on the side of the trade where you're getting the
- 22:50Speaker 2: quality started pitching for the position player. Nothing against position players.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I just think, you know, top ends started pitching his preview.
- 22:56Speaker 2: But I mean, I think it's interesting to see where
- 22:59Speaker 2: it is. But you know, I still will stand by
- 23:02Speaker 2: and maintain that you keep them, and you add a
- 23:05Speaker 2: couple guys here there, and you get yourself a winner.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Okay, we just had a technical issue. We have lost
- 23:12Speaker 1: Lance Slim's microphone. I'll bet there, I'll bet there's some
- 23:16Speaker 1: teammates or managers that wish they could have had a
- 23:19Speaker 1: mute button. But Lance, everything okay with you? No, Devin,
- 23:23Speaker 1: just all right, we're gonna finish with another topic. We're
- 23:28Speaker 1: gonna keep Lance in there. So I'm gonna start with
- 23:31Speaker 1: Lance because it'll be a quick answer. Major League Baseball
- 23:35Speaker 1: just extended their deal with PitchCom. Right, and I watched
- 23:40Speaker 1: a lot of games I cover games. There's always an
- 23:43Speaker 1: issue with PitchCom. Are we happy with PitchCom? Is there
- 23:47Speaker 1: something better out there that MLB should have extended?
- 23:51Speaker 7: Uh?
- 23:52Speaker 1: Their their PitchCom deal? Lance, are you good with PitchCom?
- 23:55Speaker 1: And give me a thumb? He likes PitchCom? All right,
- 24:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna move right on to Kyle h.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Yeah, Pitchcock was good.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I mean I liked coming up with like extensive pitch
- 24:09Speaker 2: sequences to see if you could keep the other team
- 24:11Speaker 2: from get them. It kind of became a little bit
- 24:13Speaker 2: of a game there. You know a funny story I
- 24:17Speaker 2: had going into spring training when yere was Bobby Wilson
- 24:22Speaker 2: came to the Twins and we were going over pitch
- 24:26Speaker 2: signs in spring training and I had started this was
- 24:29Speaker 2: I think twenty eighteen, maybe twenty I can can't remember,
- 24:31Speaker 2: and I had started using a sequence involving subtraction. So
- 24:35Speaker 2: you take the first sign, subtract the second sign, and
- 24:37Speaker 2: that's the pitch you get right. And then if you
- 24:39Speaker 2: double up, the sign and goes to zero, so it's
- 24:41Speaker 2: a change up. I get that explained this to Bobby Wilson.
- 24:44Speaker 2: He goes, whoa, whoa, whoa, I went to junior college.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Can we just go like first sign indicator or second sign?
- 24:50Speaker 5: Yeah? Sure, let's just go second sign, Bobby. But Pitchcom's great.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I mean, it's nice if you have an idea in
- 24:58Speaker 2: your head the exact pitch you want to throw, you
- 25:00Speaker 2: can avoid all the shaking and you can give it
- 25:02Speaker 2: to him. You know, I think it simplifies it.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Let's just check in on Lance. Lance. Is the audio back?
- 25:09Speaker 1: Give us a thumbs up or thumbs down.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Tell us that the audio is back to you, Mike,
- 25:17Speaker 2: Come on.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Matt, is there something that the batter maybe a tell
- 25:27Speaker 1: that he could pick up with PitchCom that he loses
- 25:30Speaker 1: with pitch com? Or is there? It has absolutely no
- 25:33Speaker 1: impact on on the hitter.
- 25:36Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's the same thing as forever.
- 25:39Speaker 3: As far as like if a pitcher is doing something
- 25:42Speaker 3: different in his wind up or his mechanics, or he
- 25:45Speaker 3: comes to set higher on one pitch and lower on another,
- 25:50Speaker 3: those are the only tells. I mean, occasionally on second base,
- 25:54Speaker 3: if you had somebody that was was picking up you know,
- 25:57Speaker 3: signs between the legs, you could relay to that. But really,
- 26:01Speaker 3: I think now with pitch calm, nobody even try, and
- 26:03Speaker 3: I mean there's.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Nothing to there's nothing to get other than like I said,
- 26:07Speaker 4: there's people always that are gonna study.
- 26:10Speaker 3: You know, if a guy's further away from his body
- 26:12Speaker 3: or closer to his body on certain pitches, or if
- 26:15Speaker 3: the pitcher is tipping based on his body, then that's
- 26:20Speaker 3: always going to be something.
- 26:21Speaker 4: There's always people looking in.
- 26:22Speaker 3: The dugout for grip, is he turning the ball in
- 26:26Speaker 3: his glove or you know all the things, or is
- 26:31Speaker 3: the catcher you know, is the catcher shifting too early?
- 26:34Speaker 3: Is the catcher get down on you know, they're all
- 26:36Speaker 3: on one knee.
- 26:37Speaker 4: I guess now for every pitch.
- 26:38Speaker 3: But there's gonna be always people looking for body movements.
- 26:42Speaker 3: But as far as like stealing signs goes, I mean
- 26:46Speaker 3: those days are over. I mean, it's it's a it's
- 26:49Speaker 3: you know, it's you know, even in college baseball, they
- 26:52Speaker 3: have the bracelets or whatever you want to call them
- 26:56Speaker 3: to where the coach is putting in hit and run
- 27:00Speaker 3: or steal.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Uh, so you know the player looks at that.
- 27:03Speaker 3: So there's not even signs coming from the third base
- 27:06Speaker 3: coach anymore. So it's it's about as uh stealth of
- 27:11Speaker 3: a game as we can possibly make it. And you know,
- 27:15Speaker 3: outside of human error where a pitcher's doing something physically
- 27:19Speaker 3: slightly different on different pitches, Uh, there's no more stealing
- 27:23Speaker 3: pitches as a.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Hitter, though, you're all focused on the pitch and the
- 27:28Speaker 1: pitch colmn goes out. Sometimes it happens a couple of
- 27:31Speaker 1: times in the game. Done that. Don't bother you don't frustrate,
- 27:35Speaker 1: you know, I mean.
- 27:36Speaker 3: It's I mean it didn't happen enough to make it.
- 27:39Speaker 3: I don't think it's that big of a deal. They
- 27:41Speaker 3: just run a new one out there, and I mean
- 27:43Speaker 3: it's to me, it's it's it's no factor.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Kyle.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Do you like the whole setup with it easy to manage?
- 27:51Speaker 1: You don't think any improvements can be made, You're you're
- 27:53Speaker 1: good with it as is.
- 27:56Speaker 5: I think it's good.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I do think there's instances where you know, you can
- 27:59Speaker 2: maybe hear it if you're on second base or you're
- 28:01Speaker 2: a hitter and the catcher has a too loud or
- 28:03Speaker 2: you're on first base and the first baseman has a
- 28:05Speaker 2: towo loud because you just don't know who has one
- 28:07Speaker 2: in the field. I actually had a hitter tell me
- 28:10Speaker 2: one time that you know, they heard it from the
- 28:13Speaker 2: catcher when I was throwing, and he's like, oh man,
- 28:16Speaker 2: inside sink are great and he turns and burned and
- 28:18Speaker 2: hits a one hot double play the third base. So,
- 28:20Speaker 2: I mean it worked out for me. But I mean
- 28:22Speaker 2: it's still there's certain instances where you know, you really
- 28:25Speaker 2: can't tell how loud it is away from you. So
- 28:28Speaker 2: if you haven't turned up and the crowd gets quiet,
- 28:30Speaker 2: you know that is something that can be heard. But
- 28:32Speaker 2: there's no issues with it. That's I think it's a
- 28:35Speaker 2: decent system.
- 28:36Speaker 1: All right, Well, boys, Matt has things to do. Matt,
- 28:40Speaker 1: are you're still with us? Lance has something to fix?
- 28:43Speaker 1: And uh, Kyle, you were great. You're like, you're like
- 28:46Speaker 1: the kid in class that sits in the front row
- 28:48Speaker 1: and says you forgot to give us homework. Yes, Matt,
- 28:52Speaker 1: what do you mean I was?
- 28:53Speaker 4: I mean Kyle was great. We weren't you were great? Lances?
- 28:57Speaker 4: Lance has been great, still been great.
- 29:00Speaker 1: That is going to do it for this edition of
- 29:02Speaker 1: Cardinals Terror.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's part of our stick, is that
- 29:07Speaker 3: something's gonna be off somebody's gonna be doing something dumb,
- 29:10Speaker 3: Like I'm very unprofessional, Like I don't have headphones on Lance.
- 29:15Speaker 4: I don't know what he's right now.
- 29:17Speaker 2: The pillow has been in the shop the whole time.
- 29:19Speaker 5: You're just like it.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Yeah, well again, Like I think that's part of our
- 29:24Speaker 3: stick is it's not very professional. But you know I
- 29:28Speaker 3: do like our little birds that hit heads in our introduction.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Lance is like doing the sign language thing for
- 29:39Speaker 1: this show. We appreciate that, and that's gonna do Miami,
- 29:44Speaker 1: he's a mine. That's gonna do it for this edition
- 29:46Speaker 1: of Cardinal Territory. We hope to see you next time.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Hopefully that edition won't suck.
