- Owen Wilson: Man, Black Monday, that's what it kind of feels like right now. We're gonna talk about it on Mafia Mayhem, right here on Bill's Mafia, Carolina Takeover. Patriots come into town, they take care of business. I'm really not sure where to begin here on this mafia mayhem. The Bills go to three and one. They had an opportunity to really put a huge advantage against the New England Patriots, be three games up on ⁓ That's not the case now. Mike Frabel said they're they're involved in the race and they are in the AFC East. But if you've been with me long enough to know that I'm a pretty positive person when it comes to the Bills from the Josh Allen standpoint. I mean, I pick ⁓ almost every week. I pick them, not because I feel like I'm a homer, but I mean, really at any week, Josh Allen, if Josh Allen's on, he can win games. So that's the reason why I pick them every week. Although I do give props to other teams like I did against the Chargers, and I and I mentioned this to Jesse last week with the Pats. I thought this game would be closer. I mean the Pats and the Bills, the last six times they played together, it's come down to one possession. Sunday's game against the Pats was very concerning to me. And I'm trying to stay positive on this whole thing, but really the I am so frustrated and so confused. And just like I just feel like I'm the apologetic for the Bills. And there are fans out there that say all this crazy stuff about losses that I try to defend on my show because I do believe the Bills are good. But I've s what I've seen against the Chargers and what I saw against New England. on Sunday, I'm getting to a point where I'm just I I cannot be apologetic anymore to the Bills and to the offense. Like I'm leaning more towards those people in Bill's Mafia that have like, when you when you read them, they're like, where the hell are they even getting this from? I'm I'm like now saying, well, wait a second, they may be right. You know, Joe Brady getting hired as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, you know, there's talk out there where people are saying that was a terrible hire because Joe Brady's Josh Allen's best friend, basically. So you have your best friend coaching you and the head coach. Josh Allen needs if Ryan Fitzpatrick said this. Josh Allen on the hire. He thought that Josh Allen needed someone who wasn't Josh's best friend, who can stick it to him when he needs to, give him some urgency, and kind of be an ass to him. Now I'm not saying that's not what Joe Brady is doing behind the scenes. We we will never know that. But nothing has changed. Nothing. Nothing has changed from Sean McDermott head coach to Joe Brady's heir. And all this talk about in the press conference with Joe Brady and got to give him some time. They're not putting expectations on the Super Bowl. That's bullshit. That's bullshit. Joe Brady was in the system for two years. He's got one of the best NFL athletes of all time as his quarterback. He's called plays for Josh Allen before. There is no expectation. There is no lowing, there is no pulling back on the on the playoffs and Super Bowl talk. No, this is a playoff team. This is a Super Bowl team, and it should be. And right now, these past three games have been terrible. Terrible. I mean, the Bills arguably could have one win this season against Houston. But let's take a look at that win against Houston and what came about for the loss against New England. If you go back to Houston, Josh Allen throws God knows what kind of ball. Up into the end zone, the corner of the end zone. If Houston Guy catches that ball and brings it down, that's game over, Bills lose. Now we go to New England on Sunday, second and six. You need a field goal to win it. You've already know how hard it is to score on this really good Patriots defense. And instead of Josh Allen doing what an all-pro, future Hall of Famer, veteran quarterback should have done in that situation, is he should have just thrown the ball away or should have ran the ball. But instead, and we get this every year, one or two games where Sugar High Josh comes out and just throws a pass. They have no idea why he's throwing that pass. And that's what happened on Sunday. Second and six, the Bills just needed a field goal to win, to keep it three games ahead of the Patriots, keep a four and up, keep ahead of, you know, you're chasing Kansas City now, right? To stay on top of them. But instead, I Josh Allen throws a deep ball On second and six to double coverage. Now, the pros out there and, you know, the players and the coaches and the analysts on ESPN and all that stuff have access to all these different angles that I that obviously I don't have, many of us don't have. So, you know, they're they're they're gonna say Josh, you know, Josh didn't see the safety coming over on top. You know, it's bullshit. Because second and six, and you have you have a basically a buffalo of a human being running the ball, if the if If he's scrambling out of that, which he did, like give him props for getting out of that sack, there's no need for that. No need. It is just frustrating for me because I am just so positive when it comes to this team. And when I see plays like that where it it it happened in Houston and we got lucky, and then it gets and then we get here again, it's just frustrating. It's frustrating. And I don't even want to get on the defense. The defense to me. I I have been the person that's been about the defense since they hired Jim Leonard. And I apologize to all you because I truly thought after week one that this defense would come into shape, but we are not. Our defense is terrible. In fact, Sean McDermott's defense of Brend Ben But Don't Break defense is much better than what it is here. Now, I you know, certainly it's a different style of defense, which is what we're all excited about. And I will give the Bills defense credit, especially on Sunday. They did get home when they needed to with four defensive linemen. The problem is Drake May got outside, or there's wide open wide receivers. I mean, we've got cornerbacks like Maxwell Harrison playing four yards off the ball on third and six. Third and six! And you're playing four yards off the ball. Like that doesn't make sense to me. Second year player. You gotta know the down and distance there. You got to. I don't know where this defense is gonna go, to be honest with you. I mean, certainly the run defense is has not looked good. It looks exactly like it was McDermott. But more importantly, the secondary is atrocious. And I know, I know, I have plugged this all season long that this secondary would be a huge upgrade. Than what it was in the past. And honestly, right now, it is not. We've got some major issues on secondary. Now, did New England come in and throw the ball over the yard? No, they didn't. They ran the ball and then they picked and choose spots to throw it. And when they did, they had wide open guys. Now, I'm not a coach, I'm not on the sideline. So I get all that. But it to me, looking at it, it just doesn't seem that there's any urgency on defense. And then you look back a week. prior to that and the Chargers and the defense keeps them in the game. I mean, literally five turnovers and the Bills keep them in the game. And the later we get into the season, the harder it's going to be to be able to achieve what we want. The Patriots offense is not good. And I'm going to get a lot of flack from the Patriots fans for saying that, but it's not. It's just not good. Drake May is not good. He had a great day against Buffalo, mainly because the Buffalo defense right now is not good. But when he goes against Kansas City, Raiders, you know, those type of games, like compound good defense, it's going to be a struggle for the Patriots. And that's what's frustrating is Drake May beats Josh Allen. That should never happen. Never. And I know that we've paid six possess six games again with New England in one point one possession game, but Josh Allen should be winning those games. Although although the defense was certainly subject, and it's going to be an issue going forward for sure. The loss of the new the loss of the game. this Sunday was on Josh Allen. Simply on Josh Allen. It was only on one play, and that was on second and six when he threw a bomb to double coverage. Whether people think that the safety sli slid over or not, or if you watch your t all 22 and then, you know, the safety was was playing on the other side and kind of, you know, ghost Josh into throwing that ball, that's fine. Either way, there's no reason to take a bomb shot like that on second and six. It's two down territory. You need a field goal to win. And that's what's frustrating about this. Bills have to go now go to to to the Rams, and we'll talk about that later on this week, but that's another matchup where the Bills could easily lose. The other problem is on Sunday is Jay once James Cook got stopped and once the Bills had to go pass, James Cook's out of the game. Doesn't make sense to me why you would take the best player, one of the best players off the field on third downs. I get Ty Johnson is a third down back and I get all that, but in in And the time and the score predicts what personnel you need to put on there. But man, James Cook has got to be on the field for as much time as you can. And we're and we're back to the wide receiver issue again. Like Keon Coleman, I give him a lot of credit. He obviously you guys know how I feel about him in the beginning of the season. But with DJ Moore not being healthy and not being able to stay on the field, I I mean, I just don't we're we're back to last year, the previous years. All the way up to to when when Diggs left ⁓ the Bills. I mean, that's really where a wide receiver core and it's and it defense is just like New England did, they shut down Kincaid, they sh they they handled Cook, and then when DJ Moore came out, it was a struggle. It was a struggle. And so the Bills had some really big soul searching going on here for this week before they play the Rams, especially if DJ Moore is out. Teams are going to make you throw away from Kincaid because that's their second best weapon. And they're going to make you throw to Kink to Keon, who has stepped up really good, but it's going to be a problem. It's going to be a problem. And the Patriots showed that. And give all the credit in the world to New England. Quote unquote, their lives were on the line, if you want to say that. And and Vrabel said it said it great out of out of his press conference on Sunday. You know, they they escaped with a win. And that it's all that matters, because that's exactly what it was. So just absolutely frustrating. And one thing I do want to say before we move on to our mafia mail here is that I do apologize. The Bills Mafia. As most of you know, I am a Red Sox fan, and ⁓ every year the Bills play the Patriots. It's always during typically the wild card round. And as of last week, you know, I ⁓ support the Boston Red Sox hats. And the past two years that has been the case, and the Bills have lost. So I take this as part of my fault. And so because of that, I have officially ⁓ thrown out my Red Sox cap and whatever mojo superstitious bills suck when they play the Pats, especially with the Hall of Famer like Josh Allen kind of vibe it have, and I put it in the garbage. And here's a video of that. Now we've got all of that taken care of, let's get into our mafia male. The family has All right, this one comes from Derek in Reno, Nevada. Thanks for tuning in, Derek. And ⁓ Bills will be out there soon. Let's see what he has to say. Well, his subject line is are the wheels starting to fall off? I would have told you no, but yes they are. Hey Owen, I'm trying to figure out what the hell were we watched yesterday. Losing is one thing, but losing the Patri Pat excuse me, losing the Patriots, like that just feels different. This is a game that Bills should have handled. Instead, it felt like everything we've been w worried about finally showed up at the same time. So here's my question Was yesterday just one real bad game that we need to forget about? Or are the wheels legitimately starting to fall off? Because right now I'm having a hard time looking at this team and thinking Super Bowl contender. Is this an overreaction after a brutal loss, or did the Patriots expose some real problems that are going to fall Buffalo the rest of the season? Please take me off the ledge. Go Bills. Well, don't jump, Derek. From Las Vegas. Don't jump. Not yet anyway. Yeah. Yesterday was a bad game for sure. Certainly we need to forget about it and move on, right? I mean, we know last year the Bills went into Atlanta, got crushed again, ⁓ back to back after they lose to New England. You don't need that for sure. So you you do have to recruit and get back into it the swing of things. Are the wheel wheels legitimately falling off? I don't I don't think so. They're legitimately falling off. Are we a super bowl contender? No. Right now we are not a super contender. Our record may show that our place in the division may show that, but there's no way we are a Super Bowl contender right now. There's no way we're going into Kansas City and beating them. There's no way right now that we're going into Jacksonville in the playoffs as of right now. I mean it's only the first, you know, four games in, but there's no way we're going to Jacksonville beating them. And Las Vegas we'll see, right? I mean, you know, right now, Vegas is a better team. So no, we're not a Super Bowl contender. We're right now, we're a wild card In we're in the bubble section. Now, do I think the Bills will win the AFC East, Derek? Yes, I still do. I mean, it was a nice win for the Pats, but I I I just think overall, you know, the Bills will win the AFC East. But do I think that we're a Super Bowl contender? Not right now. No. And it is a it is a hard it this is what I'm saying. It's very hard to to say that and believe that. I don't think the Patriots really exposed anything to us. If if there's a one team that exposed anything to us, it was the following week in the Chargers. But no, I don't I don't think the Patriots had expose anything. I think really right now, Derek, our exposure is is on us, our defense, our cornerbacks. I I think that's gonna be a huge thing, maybe for the rest of the season, you know, certainly going against the Rams. I just think the Patriots had a great game plan going in and they were able to lean on our difficulties, our struggles, our cornerbacks, and I and I think that was the biggest thing. So don't go off the ledge just yet. Certainly these next two weeks will be the test. You know, if the Bills can come out with, you know, one of one win of the two remaining before the buy, I think that would be a you know a plus for sure. ⁓ but if they drop those two, I would I mean that's gonna be tough. That's gonna be a tough road going ahead. So I appreciate your email. And Derek from ⁓ Arena, Nevada. So if you'd like to get in on Bill's Mafia, if you'd like to get in on the mafia mail, you know where to reach me, Bills Mafia. Cto at gmail.com and thanks again for your mafia mail. That's a wrap on Mafia Mail, the family spoken. All right, guys, that wraps up Mafia Mayhem for this week. A lot of props in New England. They played well. ⁓ they they did a lot of great things. They leaned on the Bills' weaknesses, which were the cornerback position. The defense is good. Jim Leonard's defense has got a lot of issues, and they got to clean that up. It's not going to be an easy test going forward, especially with Vegas. And then you got the Rams coming up on Monday night. So it's going to be interesting. But hey, the Bills are three and one. I talked about it earlier. They could be one and three right now. They're three and one. That's the positive side of things. We just got to make sure that Josh Allen can can reel in Sugar High Josh going forward because we're going to need him. We're going to need Josh Allen to get us to where we want to go.
