- 0:10Hello friends, Sean here, it's Thursday, it's the 7th of
- 0:16November and you have invited me into your day.
- 0:20God bless you, you clever person.
- 0:22Thank you for your generosity, opening up your time so that God
- 0:26can come in in His word and He can shape your day with the
- 0:32rhythm of his message to you. What a joy this is for me and I
- 0:37hope for you too as we can do this in God's Word.
- 0:40And today we continue reading through the book of Acts, we ha,
- 0:44we reach a point where it all seemed to be going so well.
- 0:47And now of course, we come across a wee bit of opposition
- 0:52as the authorities don't so much like that they've killed this
- 0:55bloke, Jesus, and it's just getting worse for them.
- 0:58So they start pushing back, but as we will see, pushing back
- 1:02does not give them their desired response.
- 1:05And God's church continues to grow.
- 1:08And we see that all around the world today, where God's church
- 1:11is pushed down, the Holy Spirit raises it up even more.
- 1:16And sadly, friends, it's that parts of the world where God's
- 1:20church has free reign in society and things are easy for us
- 1:24Christians that the church is dying.
- 1:27So maybe, just maybe, we can pray for God to throw some
- 1:32opposition in our way to show us how gracious and powerful our
- 1:37God really is. But I'll leave that to you as
- 1:40you work out how to invite the Holy Spirit to be more active in
- 1:44your life. But for now, let's hear what
- 1:47happens. As we read together Acts chapter
- 1:504, while Peter and John were
- 2:03speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests,
- 2:06the captain of the temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.
- 2:10These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John
- 2:13were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a
- 2:16resurrection of the dead. They arrested them and since it
- 2:20was already evening, they put them in gaol until morning.
- 2:23But many of the people who heard their message believed it so.
- 2:26The number of men who believed now totalled about 5000.
- 2:31The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and
- 2:34teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.
- 2:38Anas, the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John
- 2:42Alexander and other relatives of the high priest.
- 2:45They brought in the two disciples and demanded By what
- 2:49power or in whose name have you done this?
- 2:53Then Peter filled with the Holy Spirit said to them, rulers and
- 2:58elders of our people, are we being questioned to day because
- 3:03we've done a good deed for a crippled man?
- 3:06Do you want to know how he was healed?
- 3:08Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of
- 3:13Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ,
- 3:19the Nazarene, the man you crucified, but whom God raised
- 3:24from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to
- 3:28in the Scriptures where it says the stone that you builders
- 3:32rejected has now become the cornerstone.
- 3:36There is salvation in no one else.
- 3:39God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be
- 3:43saved. The members of the Council were
- 3:47amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for
- 3:50they could see that they were ordinary men with no special
- 3:53training in the Scriptures. They also recognised them as men
- 3:57who had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man
- 4:01who had been healed standing right there among them, there
- 4:04was nothing the Council could say.
- 4:06So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and
- 4:10conferred among themselves. What should we do with these
- 4:13men? They asked each other.
- 4:15We can't deny that they have performed a miraculous sign and
- 4:19everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.
- 4:21But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we
- 4:25must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus name again.
- 4:31So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never
- 4:34again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
- 4:38But Peter and John replied, Do you think God wants us to obey
- 4:43you rather than Him? We cannot stop telling about
- 4:47everything we have seen and heard.
- 4:50The council then threatened them further, but they finally let
- 4:54them go because they didn't know how to punish them without
- 4:57starting a riot. For everyone was praising God
- 5:00for this miraculous sign, the healing of a man who had been
- 5:03lame for more than 40 years. As soon as they were freed,
- 5:08Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them
- 5:12what the leading priests and elders had said.
- 5:14When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their
- 5:18voices together in prayer to God.
- 5:20O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea and
- 5:25everything in them. You spoke long ago by the Holy
- 5:29Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, why
- 5:34were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time
- 5:38with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare
- 5:41for battle. The rule is gathered together
- 5:44against the Lord and against His Messiah.
- 5:49In fact, this has happened here in this very city, for Herod
- 5:54Antipas, Pontius Pilate, the governor, the Gentiles, and the
- 5:58people of Israel were all united against Jesus, Your holy
- 6:03servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was
- 6:09determined before according to your will.
- 6:12And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, Your
- 6:16servants, great boldness in preaching Your word.
- 6:20Stretch out Your hand with healing power.
- 6:23May miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of Your
- 6:27holy servant, Jesus. After this prayer, the meeting
- 6:32place shook and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 6:36Then they preached the Word of God with boldness.
- 6:41All the believers were united in heart and mind, and they felt
- 6:45that what they owned was not their own, so they shared
- 6:48everything they had. The apostles testified
- 6:51powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's
- 6:55great blessing was upon them all.
- 6:58There were no needy people among them because those who owned
- 7:01land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the
- 7:04apostles to give to those in need.
- 7:07For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed
- 7:11Barnabas, which means son of encouragement.
- 7:15He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of
- 7:18Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and
- 7:21brought the money to the apostles.
- 7:33Our Lord Jesus, thank you that you give us not a spirit of
- 7:38timidity, but a spirit of boldness and a spirit of power.
- 7:44When we think of power, we think of power.
- 7:47With a human lens, we think of power to dominate others to our
- 7:52own benefit. But here we see that the power
- 7:55that you deal in Father, that you deal in Lord and Holy
- 8:00Spirit, is a power to give boldness, to share the good news
- 8:07that we are loved children of the living God.
- 8:11And all we need to do is turn from our own selfish desires to
- 8:16serve You. And you embrace us, and you fill
- 8:20us with Your grace and Your boldness to love like we've
- 8:25never loved before. Come, Holy Spirit, give us this
- 8:30power that our love would be multiplied by Your Spirit and
- 8:35that we would make such an impact in our days today that
- 8:41people would plainly see Your presence in everything we do
- 8:46today. We are your children and you are
- 8:49our beloved Father, and we love you, and we worship you with our
- 8:54voices and with our lives today and every day.
- 8:59We pray all this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
