Transcript
- 0:00Eyes for hawkeyeinsider.com, part of 24/7 Sports.
- 0:04Hawkeyes have their bowl Destination will recap that
- 0:07press conference with the Kirk Ference.
- 0:09I will do that also. Take a look at Cyhawk as it is
- 0:13fast approaching. The women tomorrow night, the
- 0:15men on Thursday in our number two, our buddy baseball buddy
- 0:20Matt Snyder got a book out the lead off man.
- 0:23That book is available at Amazon just in time for Christmas.
- 0:27Matt Snyder's going to join us on his new publication as well
- 0:30as on the winter meetings that are going on.
- 0:32Couple of the big moves already coming today, Diaz from the
- 0:35Mets. He's now going to close for the
- 0:36Dodgers. Is there no end?
- 0:39Is there no end to what money they will spend?
- 0:41Apparently not. And Kyle Schwarber stays with
- 0:45the Phillies. He'll get $30 million a year
- 0:48over a five year contract. So Schwarber back with the
- 0:51Phills, Diaz switches coasts, switches divisions from the NL
- 0:55East to the NL West and he's a Dodger going forward.
- 0:58So baseball Topics with their buddy Matt Snyder as well as his
- 1:01book, The Lead off Man, right? Yes, he chronicled, I think he
- 1:04said 75-P-75 players, 75 lead off hitters.
- 1:12Don't you just skip the number one?
- 1:13I mean, is, is, is is there really, is there really any
- 1:16intrigue as to who the best lead off hitter is of all time?
- 1:19Ricky. Yes, Ricky, Ricky Anderson.
- 1:23What a, what a phenomenal career He had no doubt about it.
- 1:26And he passed away, right? Yes, he did.
- 1:29He's dead. He died.
- 1:31That sounds right. No, he did.
- 1:32I think you have that. I think he did.
- 1:34Yeah. I think he's a Christmas.
- 1:35It was a Christmas Day, baby. And, and, and he's passed.
- 1:38Anyways. We'll talk baseball with Matt
- 1:40Snyder coming up to kick off our number 2.
- 1:44And our final guest in the program will be Matt Postons,
- 1:46who covers the Big 12. We'll take a look at Texas Tech
- 1:49and their run into the College Football Playoff, as well as do
- 1:52some basketball with our buddy Matt Postons from Heartland
- 1:55College Sports. Trenton will make some picks
- 1:57before we get out of here at just before 2:00.
- 2:01So the football, NFL football come and gone.
- 2:03Week 14 is behind us. We'll get into that in the first
- 2:06segment because like you said yesterday late in the program,
- 2:09boy, we didn't even have time to talk Bears, Packers.
- 2:11And that was a phenomenal. It really was a terrific
- 2:14football game. So we'll get into that.
- 2:16But just just put a capper on what we saw yesterday, both in
- 2:19Ames, then in Happy Valley. I think Jimmy Rogers, by all
- 2:22accounts, listening to Cyclone fans, I don't, I think they're,
- 2:28they're OK. I mean, they they're not pleased
- 2:30that Matt Campbell left, but I think that they're, you know, I,
- 2:34they believe that Pollard, obviously the proof will be in
- 2:36the pudding, but they think that Pollard went out and did the
- 2:39best he can. And then listen to Matt Campbell
- 2:41that Penn State was weird. It was just weird just, you
- 2:44know, seeing him there and just different, right?
- 2:47I think he's going to do very well at Penn State.
- 2:49I do we'll see. We'll see if that if he plays in
- 2:52the Big 10. I I know their fan base is
- 2:55ecstatic, Yeah. And they really.
- 2:57Are because they were dreading the worst.
- 2:59They were and it looked like for a long time that they may be,
- 3:02you know, that there might might be no coming back from this 50
- 3:04something days that had lapsed by the when they hire or they
- 3:08fired Franklin rather to the point that they were at.
- 3:10So we'll see. But it was just different.
- 3:12Did you have any takeaways watching Campbell yesterday?
- 3:14I agree with you. I think it's going to be good.
- 3:16I'm also intrigued to see what it's going to look like.
- 3:19What do you think about Matt Campbell?
- 3:20A couple things jumped to mind. The togetherness quote sticks
- 3:25with me. When in the dark or whatever,
- 3:27no. No, no, no.
- 3:28Those things, those are cliches. Coaches use that all the time.
- 3:30OK, that, that's. The the win in the dark was he
- 3:33used that a lot. Yes, when in the margins, all
- 3:35those, but but those are out there coaching cliches.
- 3:38He is not alone in an island there.
- 3:40But when he went after the reporter, they talked about
- 3:43their preseason expectations and said no, no, no, you guys said
- 3:46that, not us. That's not going to work at Penn
- 3:48State. Those kind of things that work
- 3:50at Iowa State, those will not work.
- 3:53The sideline antics, and there were plenty of them and some
- 3:56embarrassing moments on the sidelines.
- 3:57Really. Which ones?
- 3:59Big 12 championship game, completely freaking out, losing
- 4:03his mind and that happened many I.
- 4:04Think that that was paled in comparison to one of his
- 4:07predecessors. Paul Rose was complete nut case.
- 4:11But Paul Rhodes is not going to Penn State.
- 4:13Right. And Matt Campbell is.
- 4:14And when you do it at a place like Iowa State, compared to
- 4:19what it's going to be, everything is elevated at Penn
- 4:21State. Everything's going to be.
- 4:23I get the sense the Penn State fans wish that James Franklin
- 4:26had a little bit more of that in him.
- 4:27Oh, absolutely. He would, I mean he go bananas.
- 4:30I mean that's coaching hires in general, right?
- 4:31You go kind of different direction, but those things that
- 4:35nationally were swept under the rug weren't talked about a whole
- 4:39lot. It's going to be elevated.
- 4:41These are things that are. Going to stay, yes.
- 4:43Yes, and that is going to be a big change for him.
- 4:47The demeanor, the sideline demeanor, the dressing down of
- 4:50officials that he did as much as any college coach that I
- 4:52certainly can remember. Oh, absolutely.
- 4:54Remember this trend? Oh, absolutely, yeah.
- 4:56Dressing down college. I mean, every college coach
- 4:59does. To me he took it to another
- 5:02level. I guess I'm wrong.
- 5:03No, I'm not saying you're wrong. I just don't recall it being, as
- 5:08you know, being is one side of the meter that you've got it on.
- 5:10I mean coaches blow gaskets. Yes, absolutely.
- 5:15I just always felt he took it to a different level.
- 5:17All right, now, did you hear me bring it up?
- 5:19No, because it's not a big deal. But it will be a big deal, I
- 5:23believe, at Penn State if it continues.
- 5:25Well, if you would. Still, if he wins while doing
- 5:28that, that will become a narrative.
- 5:31That aside, yeah. But the other fan bases, Penn
- 5:32State fans wouldn't care. They're gonna look at the bottom
- 5:34line, 11 and 112 and O, 10 and two, whatever it is going to be
- 5:38now, the, the, the, the fan bases of teams he vanquished.
- 5:41Yeah, you know, they'll poke holes.
- 5:43If they start beating Michigan and Ohio State and suddenly that
- 5:45is going to be something bigger again.
- 5:47It's the stage and I that is one thing that I'm interested to see
- 5:50this stage because everything is going to be.
- 5:53Elevated where are we? Absolutely 100% agree.
- 5:56You're not going to get away after a tough season with
- 5:58preseason expectations and say what were the most together
- 6:01team. 1. Yeah, I mean, you're 2.
- 6:05You better. Start, you know, challenging
- 6:09'cause I think their schedule's pretty easy this year, this
- 6:11upcoming year. I, I, I've looked at it at one
- 6:14point over the weekend. I thought they got a pretty good
- 6:17break. By the way, do you see Iowa's
- 6:18schedule next year? Have you looked at the Hawks
- 6:20schedule next year? Tough, tough, Yeah, I'll say
- 6:24that's the Big 10 W sprinkle a little at Illinois in there.
- 6:30You go to Washington, you know they're not going to win.
- 6:32There. Oh no.
- 6:33I mean, good God. Are we going to go the same
- 6:35direction we went at 365 days ago?
- 6:37This team is going to struggle to get to a bowl game.
- 6:39I don't see 6:00 and 6:00 because we had those
- 6:42conversations right here on these Airways.
- 6:44Probably as recently as July. Oh, no.
- 6:47After they got Granowski, I started to change that minimum.
- 6:50Yeah, they're a bowl team. They're 7 and 580.
- 6:51Four, yeah, I think I picked them 7:00 and 5:00.
- 6:53But regardless of that, yeah, I looked at I was scheduled
- 6:58yesterday at some point the holy crap.
- 7:01Now the the first three games, you know, you you get, I was
- 7:04stayed at home in the northern Northern Illinois, Northern
- 7:08Iowa, correct. And then the Ohio State at home,
- 7:12I'll say this, pretty good slate of home games.
- 7:14If you're trying to sell tickets, not that you struggle
- 7:16at Kinnick, but get your tickets early for that one.
- 7:20What's their easy? It was Purdue.
- 7:22Purdue was on this game. Purdue in.
- 7:24Nebraska, I mean, those are the wins in Nebraska, in the city,
- 7:26of course. Same category as Purdue.
- 7:28That's funny. There's five wins there.
- 7:31The proofs in the pudding. There's five wins there.
- 7:33Yeah, certainly at home, Nebraska, at home, Purdue and
- 7:37the Three Nine Conference, You feel really good about those.
- 7:40It's in Kinnock. Yeah, I would.
- 7:44I would absolutely say I will beat Wisconsin.
- 7:47But find a couple more out of this Ohio State at home and the
- 7:50road games at Michigan. No.
- 7:53At Washington. Probably not.
- 7:55At Minnesota, at Northwestern. It was the new stadium.
- 8:01Is it next year? I think so.
- 8:02I think it is too at Illinois, another coin flip.
- 8:06Yeah, it kind of look at that. Illinois's back on the schedule.
- 8:10OK, Say they lose, obviously to Ohio State.
- 8:12Yeah. Say they lose at Washington.
- 8:14OK. What else?
- 8:15Do you feel they don't have a shot?
- 8:17Michigan, probably. You do.
- 8:19Michigan, probably. You.
- 8:21Well, you saw something out of Bryce Underwood in his freshman
- 8:23campaign every. Chance, I got him.
- 8:24He was the one that told us this is he's the best freshman
- 8:27quarterback that the sport's ever seen.
- 8:28He said that. If I went to Michigan this year,
- 8:31who wins? Oh, I don't know who wins.
- 8:35Probably I don't know. I I.
- 8:38But it's koi flip type game. Yes, for sure, for sure, for
- 8:41sure. We don't know.
- 8:43What's going to happen in the portal?
- 8:44I was just about to say let's wait till the portal is closed
- 8:47and we see where they'll go, but my point being is Penn State's
- 8:52got a pretty easy schedule in 2026.
- 8:55So I clicked on I and I went, holy crap, this is the water
- 8:59gets a little bit deeper from one year to the next.
- 9:01Anyways, let's go to the NFL is the curtain fell last night.
- 9:07What is you you've been down on this Eagles team all year long.
- 9:11You might have turned a little bit, you still weren't all the
- 9:14way there. That you know, this team, this
- 9:15team is better than I thought that I said that the.
- 9:18Reason I didn't think they were as good is just because they're
- 9:21so boring. But out during this three-game
- 9:24losing streak. Last night wasn't boring.
- 9:27It was just one thing after another.
- 9:30I said it yesterday, they're not having fun.
- 9:32This is a team with bad chemistry and he can blame the
- 9:35head coach and a lot of people are.
- 9:37You can put that blame on him. Aikman wasn't willing to do that
- 9:41there. He stacked his resume in the
- 9:43first couple of years. What'd he say?
- 9:44First two or four years of his coaching?
- 9:46Put it up against anybody that's ever coaches what?
- 9:48He said. And it is, absolutely.
- 9:51But this is the second time in three years where there's been a
- 9:53second-half collapse. Yeah, it happened two years ago.
- 9:56You did they lose what, their final six or seven or six in a
- 9:59row at the. End a bunch.
- 10:00Got blown out by Tampa in the first round of the playoffs and
- 10:04now we have this year and they still might hold on and win the
- 10:06division. Probably so because they had
- 10:09such a big lead and the Cowboys, I thought, had to win in Detroit
- 10:12to give them any chance. But if you got the Seahawks
- 10:15going out there for a first round game, you got the 49ers.
- 10:18Hell, he got the Bears going out there for a first round game.
- 10:21Who are you picking? I need those 3 Rd. teams.
- 10:23Absolutely in Philly. Without any doubt, any of those
- 10:253 Rd. teams. They look broken.
- 10:27They do without a chance of coming back out of it.
- 10:30Yeah, because again, the ammunition of what happened two
- 10:33years ago, I think that has to, for whatever reason, when things
- 10:37are going well. He is a great coach.
- 10:39Yep. However.
- 10:41When things the quarterback certainly isn't helping them
- 10:43out, Neither is A.J. Brown.
- 10:44I mean, and and Aikman was spotted boy like Troy Aikman
- 10:47spot on calling him out last night.
- 10:48I mean, he heard footsteps. He absolutely heard footsteps.
- 10:52Buck called it I think cut the past was a little bit high in,
- 10:55in, in, in, on and on. You're an NFL receiver.
- 10:57You've got to make that catch, and he did have to make that.
- 10:59Catch a little chuckle after that he.
- 11:01Was really good. What are you laughing at?
- 11:03I'm like Troy Aikman's just to RIP it out players again.
- 11:05You know what, good for him, good for him.
- 11:07Because too many former athletes and a Hall of Famer, Troy
- 11:10Aikman, they're they're they're not willing to do that.
- 11:14I guess before we go to the NFC and and more into those games,
- 11:17let's just get to today's news. The Colts are signing Philip
- 11:20Rivers. He's 44 years old.
- 11:22He hasn't played since what, 20 or 21 was his last year, 2020,
- 11:26the 2020 season has not played since never.
- 11:29The fleet is to foot to begin with.
- 11:30Obviously that hasn't changed. In fact, he's gotten slower.
- 11:34They worked them out last night, but this is where they're at.
- 11:36I mean, Riley Leonard, their backup quarterback is going to
- 11:39miss some time. Obviously Daniel Jones is
- 11:42probably he might be done for his career.
- 11:44I mean that's he's not going to play in all likelihood next
- 11:46year. The fact that you can come back
- 11:47from the killing me maybe, I guess in December, but he
- 11:50doesn't have a team. Well, and Achilles injury is a
- 11:52member of changed. They have changed in the way
- 11:55that we have seen you get that surgery right away.
- 11:58I mean, this goes back to Jason Tatum when that happened during
- 12:01the playoffs a year ago and it's turned into Jason Tatum is going
- 12:04to be playing likely in the next six weeks, but close.
- 12:08To being Jason Tatum right off. Well, that's yeah.
- 12:11Still, this is not I don't think it's December for him.
- 12:14There's a possibility, maybe October for Jones.
- 12:16That aside though, why was he playing?
- 12:19He's got a broken foot. Yeah.
- 12:21How many Achilles injuries have we now seen with a guy that is
- 12:24debilitated with something in a leg?
- 12:26Yep. Knee.
- 12:28Ankle. Overcompensating on your good
- 12:29one. And what happens so many times
- 12:32this has happened and I think. That tendon rolls up the back of
- 12:36your leg. That's so gross to.
- 12:37Watch as soon as you. See it, You know where it's
- 12:38going, you know where the news is going to be.
- 12:41It's not good. But you go under the knife
- 12:43within 24 hours, that has helped.
- 12:44That's something that they have learned with this injury.
- 12:47I don't think it's a career enter for Daniel Jones.
- 12:49But but he doesn't have AI mean he's free agent.
- 12:51We'll see where he goes, but for the Colts this year, so.
- 12:56Where's Anthony Richardson? I know we broke a bone getting
- 12:58hit by a ball or a strap in. That's what it was.
- 13:01Is that what it was? Yeah.
- 13:02Broke his orbital bone. Wouldn't you think that's
- 13:05something that you should be back from at this point?
- 13:07Yeah. You would think.
- 13:08Yeah, there are people that say he was lucky he didn't lose eye.
- 13:11Yeah. So I just I have not heard
- 13:14anything which I find interesting.
- 13:16But but yeah, this is where you have to turn.
- 13:20What else is out there? That's what I'm wondering.
- 13:22Is there nobody out there that you can turn to?
- 13:24Do you think that? Do you really think Phillip?
- 13:26And I love Phillip Rivers. He's one of my favorite
- 13:29quarterbacks to ever play the game.
- 13:30I loved him. Loved him seriously.
- 13:36I mean, if you're a Colts fan, you got to be devastated.
- 13:39Would you rather take a shot on him finding something even four
- 13:43years or more for playing or a guy that's not even on a
- 13:47practice squad? I don't know.
- 13:50I mean, obviously you're desperate trade.
- 13:52Deadlines done. Yeah, they can't do.
- 13:55You're not getting anybody. Somebody goes on waivers,
- 13:57somebody's going to pick somebody up and not do the Colts
- 14:00any favours because it's pecking order at that time.
- 14:03We'll see where it goes. All right, let's go back to your
- 14:05game because it was a phenomenal game, It really was.
- 14:08These two teams are going to play again a week from Saturday
- 14:11night, which is awesome that Fox has that game at Soldier Field.
- 14:15That game will be going up against the James Madison game,
- 14:20the second play, the second college football game.
- 14:22But just the game. Bears lose.
- 14:25You feel worse about your Bears? No, I don't either.
- 14:28I feel better about. Them.
- 14:29Oh, absolutely. I mean, this is a team that I
- 14:32didn't believe in. I don't know if I'm quite there,
- 14:36but I certainly believe in a more.
- 14:37Do you believe in the Packers more today?
- 14:39No, about the same. I still don't know.
- 14:41Just you see those stretches and and it's all the Bears are just
- 14:44doing whatever they want. And if a Bear player makes a
- 14:48tackle, I mean, they get the ball back with a chance to win
- 14:50the game as opposed to have to go down there after Green Bay
- 14:53gets that third down conversion and goes on obviously to score
- 14:55the touchdown to make it 2821 Green Bay.
- 14:57I just for every reason I can't get a feel.
- 15:00I think they're good. I do too.
- 15:01I think they're good, but it's not anything where I feel
- 15:05definitive that they're good. The Bears on the other hand, to
- 15:09go into that environment to play awful offensively for the first
- 15:12half, Caleb missing guys, drop passes, play calls that were
- 15:17head scratching, couldn't get anything going in the run game.
- 15:21And to turn around and do that from down a couple of different
- 15:25times, make it a three-point game, down 10, come all the way
- 15:27back, get it tied up. You saw including that final
- 15:31drive, some big time plays, the touchdown pass in the right side
- 15:35of the end zone. There are two guys in the NFL
- 15:37that can make that pass, 21's down just to the South of us in
- 15:41Kansas City and the other one's in Chicago, 2 guys that can make
- 15:44that throw, complete that pass. That's the kind of arm talent
- 15:48that you're talking about. He has to be more consistent.
- 15:50There's no doubt. You can't afford in a playoff
- 15:52game a first half you don't think?
- 15:53Bro makes that throw I. Don't think he has arm strength
- 15:56of that. That thing was a.
- 15:58Rope. You don't think Josh Allen makes
- 16:00that throw? No, he probably throws it short
- 16:02and throws an interception. Josh Allen.
- 16:04Yeah, OK. All right.
- 16:07Well. We're we're, we're picking it.
- 16:10Right. OK, throw those guys in the
- 16:12next. Quarterback on the other side of
- 16:13the field and Jordan Lufspin. It's it.
- 16:16I don't know what it is about this guy, but every statistic
- 16:19says he's an elite. Quarterback, he's got to win
- 16:22more. He's got to win more.
- 16:23While they're on top of the division.
- 16:24He's got to win more in January. You want to get to that echelon.
- 16:27You want to get into that conversation with the three
- 16:29games outside of Williams that we just mentioned.
- 16:32You have to win Josh Allen, by the way.
- 16:34This is the year Kansas City's out.
- 16:38Joe Burrow's out. Lamar Jackson's out.
- 16:41Lamar Jackson's out. I think Josh Allen, you don't do
- 16:43it this year, you don't do it this year.
- 16:45There's going to be a lot of questions.
- 16:47Fair. Unfair.
- 16:48And the defense is unfair because their defense is really
- 16:50bad. Yes, really bad.
- 16:52But when those quarterbacks are out of your playoff bracket?
- 16:56Out of the tournament, as Parcells likes to call it.
- 17:00So what do we have for quarterbacks in the AFC?
- 17:02Let's take a look at the AFC quarterbacks as of today.
- 17:05Bo Knicks, Drake May, Trevor Lawrence, Aaron Rodgers, Justin
- 17:13Herbert, Josh Allen and CJ Stroud.
- 17:16That's where we're at. This will be what do they hear?
- 17:19This will be the first time as long as kids 2. 1010 since Brady
- 17:24or Mahomes have not been in the AFC championship game.
- 17:26Yes. 2010. That's crazy.
- 17:29Crazy. So that's the list.
- 17:31Accord. That's one through 7 right now.
- 17:33And the Colts, arrows pointing down the.
- 17:35The Colts, I think, are cooked. I really do.
- 17:37Baltimore, they could get in because they've got 6.
- 17:41Kansas City, they're not mathematically dead.
- 17:44But doesn't it feel like they're dead?
- 17:46Yeah, it really does. It When that pass went off
- 17:49Kelsey's arms into the into the arms of one of the the Texans,
- 17:55it just felt like, OK, that's it.
- 17:57The curtain came down. That was the final act of the
- 18:00play, seemingly for this group, the 1st.
- 18:04Part of that, a 1010 game where Houston was doing nothing, 4th
- 18:11and one, and it was not that they didn't get it.
- 18:15I don't know what that play call was.
- 18:17There was nothing there. That was the thing that was so
- 18:20confounding. Of course, Houston comes down,
- 18:22scores a touchdown, makes it 1710, but they weren't doing
- 18:25anything. It's a 1010 game.
- 18:27I get it. Today's environment.
- 18:29This is not old stodgy guy on the radio yelling about the way
- 18:32football used to be. I think anybody that listens our
- 18:34show, that's not who I am. However, in that instance, you
- 18:38got to understand what's happening in this game and as it
- 18:40comes to game theory, that was awful by Andy Reid to go for it
- 18:45in that spot where Houston was dead.
- 18:48You had everything going your way.
- 18:49You didn't get it fourth and one punt it back.
- 18:52They're going to go 3 and out. You're going to get it back at
- 18:53your 30 yard. Line he panicked, I think.
- 18:55So he did. Was that the 31?
- 18:57Yeah, something like that. I mean, there was a couple of
- 18:59occasions I thought Andy Reid really shown some vulnerability
- 19:02and this is Hall of Fame coach who could nothing do nothing
- 19:06wrong since they drafted #15 for crying out loud, who's the team
- 19:10to be in the AFC? Are you willing to go to the
- 19:12seven seed right now? Houston?
- 19:14Look, Denver's not going to win the one seed.
- 19:16Denver's schedule is daunting down the stretch.
- 19:18It's daunting. They're they're dogs at home
- 19:21this week. Green Bay is a favorite in
- 19:24Denver this week. They've got to play the
- 19:26Chargers. They've got to play the Chiefs
- 19:28and they've got to play Jacksonville.
- 19:29That's tough. That's tough, yeah.
- 19:31So New England's got one tough game left, Bills this week,
- 19:35right? And then they've got The Jets,
- 19:36the Dolphins and I and the Ravens.
- 19:39And the Ravens on the road. Yes, and the Ravens on the road.
- 19:41So that'll be a tough that'll be a tricky spot.
- 19:43Patriots will be the one. I, I, I don't think that
- 19:46there's, I, I'd be shocked if Denver was the, the was, was the
- 19:50wincy Jags are probably going to win the division.
- 19:53Yes. OK, I think so too, because
- 19:56they've got AI mean the Colts, like we say, the Colts are going
- 19:59the other way Houston's. A game or two back, well, maybe,
- 20:04maybe, maybe Houston could win it because they play each other,
- 20:06do they not? They do not.
- 20:08They're done. The Jaguars finish home for The
- 20:10Jets this week, OK, they go to Denver, they go to Indianapolis
- 20:15and then they finish up at home against the Titans and minimum
- 20:182, maybe 3. While the Texans on the other
- 20:22hand, who are a game back, they have the Cardinals this week at
- 20:25home. When?
- 20:26The Raiders at home. When?
- 20:28They go to the Chargers. Cough.
- 20:31And home for the Colts win. They're three.
- 20:33They're three if it's two and two, and I don't know what the
- 20:36tiebreaker is between those two. However, did they sweep the
- 20:40Colts, The Texans, Colts, Texans, Colts, they beat them
- 20:45obviously a week ago. And the other match up, why
- 20:49can't I find it? I can't find it.
- 20:52I'm scrolling through and I can't find their second match up
- 20:54this year. We haven't played yet.
- 20:57Oh yeah, the second one is at the end and they win that one.
- 20:59Yeah, they have the tiebreaker. So they're yeah, simple.
- 21:01Go 3 and 1, two and 2:00 on the other side and the Texans are
- 21:03there. And that's the part of it where
- 21:05the Texans get up there and get a home game in the first round.
- 21:08I just don't see even with that great defense, them winning 3
- 21:12consecutive Rd. games. I'm with you.
- 21:14It's CJ Stroud as much as anything.
- 21:18I I think that's, that's the and, and the offensive line.
- 21:20The offensive line is not great, but who do you trust in the AFC?
- 21:24The Patriots, I mean, I guess you almost by default, if you
- 21:28have to trust one, it would be them, I guess, just because
- 21:33their schedule's been so easy. But is Drake May going to get to
- 21:37a Super Bowl in year #2 I mean, somebody's going to burrowed it.
- 21:43Yeah. I don't put those two in the
- 21:44same category, but Drake May is a hell of a player.
- 21:48Do you trust Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville?
- 21:51No. Can Aaron Rodgers lead the
- 21:52Steelers, this Steelers group? No Can Justin Herbert and had
- 21:55offensive line with the Chargers, No quarterbacks been
- 21:58hurt, been hit more in the game than him this year?
- 22:01Maybe, like you said at the beginning of a conversation,
- 22:04maybe this is the year for Josh Allen.
- 22:07If the playoffs are what it is right now.
- 22:10Yeah. Out of the group I trust the
- 22:13Bills because of Josh Allen just win shootouts, the Texans
- 22:17because of the defence and the Patriots because they've shown
- 22:21it week after week after week. But those are the only three I
- 22:26can't get there with Bonex. Why?
- 22:29Too inconsistent. He is inconsistent, but he's
- 22:31he's pretty good player. Trent, OK, he can run, he can
- 22:37throw. He makes some.
- 22:40You know what it is with Bonex, I'm convinced of it.
- 22:42And I think the final play, their final offensive play on
- 22:45Sunday, I know everybody that bets on sports is killing Pete
- 22:49Carroll, right? Why should they?
- 22:50They shouldn't. No, it was a terrible beat.
- 22:53It's not on Pete Carroll. It's not.
- 22:55It's on two guys, Brandon Jones for jumping on the pile.
- 22:59But preceding that, Denver's final drive deep in Vegas
- 23:03territory, they ran the ball four times, including fourth and
- 23:07four, right? What are you going to do?
- 23:094th and four, you're either going to kick a field goal which
- 23:11would have been 40 yards. Will Lutz has already kicked a
- 23:1558 yarder in the game. Then you go up and you take the
- 23:18field goal off. He ran the football.
- 23:20He wouldn't let Bone Nix run. Throw the football on 4th and
- 23:24four from the Raiders 28 yard line.
- 23:28Why won't you trust him? If your coach doesn't trust him,
- 23:31maybe we shouldn't. Maybe you're right.
- 23:33You watch obviously him a whole lot more than me.
- 23:35Every single snap. It's just the inconsistency that
- 23:39I see. Is it the college Bo Nicks?
- 23:41Because do you remember? No, because everything was just
- 23:43screen passes in college. Well, no, it wasn't just there
- 23:46was a lot of them, but there was the we called it, we had a term
- 23:49for it. It was the Bo Nicks experience.
- 23:52Absolutely right. And you wouldn't be in Bama
- 23:54whether he was playing for Auburn or whether he was for a
- 23:57Duck two or three times a year. It would be the Bo Nicks
- 24:00experience. And maybe that's part of it, but
- 24:03their defense is every bit as good I think is Houston.
- 24:07I think they are. They've got as good a kicker
- 24:10they do Will let's is a solid kicker.
- 24:14They've got an offensive minded head coach.
- 24:16They've got a much better offensive line, a way better
- 24:20offensive line. Denver, one of the Boston
- 24:22offensive lines in the game. The receivers are, I'll give the
- 24:25edge to the Texans, not because there's three Cyclones, but
- 24:28because there's a 2. A couple of legitimate supers.
- 24:31I like Court and Sutton. I don't love them.
- 24:33I don't I don't like Mims, don't like Franklin, tight end,
- 24:36Ingram, take them or leave them. But they've got they've they've
- 24:41got a lot, a lot of things going.
- 24:42So why don't we just just eliminate Denver?
- 24:46They've won a ton of close games.
- 24:48Yep. Kansas City was able to do that
- 24:50a year ago. Yep, but it was Kansas City with
- 24:5215. The sustainability of that we
- 24:55know in the NFL doesn't last. And I think of London game,
- 25:00awful, terrible, the Thursday night game against the Raiders.
- 25:03And these are the few times that I saw them in standalone spots
- 25:06where I was just watching them. And maybe that also taints it
- 25:08for me. I mean, compared to you that
- 25:11watches it week in and week out, it's different.
- 25:13Standalone game against the Commanders should have lost that
- 25:15game. I just mentioned 3 bad teams,
- 25:17bad teams that they struggled mightily with.
- 25:20And I'm sure because I watched more of them in those games and
- 25:23probably anyone else, that's probably a reason that I'm a
- 25:26little bit tainted on Denver. Fair, Unfair.
- 25:28That is the reality. I'm not watching every snap of
- 25:31the Broncos. No, I don't.
- 25:32You are you believe. I'll take your word for it.
- 25:36I believe in in this year's AAFC.
- 25:39If I had to rank them as far as who I would put Buffalo on top,
- 25:44I would put Buffalo on top. I'd put Houston second.
- 25:46Houston. 2nd. Houston second.
- 25:49But it's something about this. But it's not in a vacuum.
- 25:51It's not a power ranking. No, I know.
- 25:52It's also the path. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:54And the path for Denver, the path for New England is going to
- 25:56be much easier. And because of that.
- 25:58New England's New England's going to get a buy, New England
- 26:01is going to get a buy, but I don't think there's anybody that
- 26:05could show up in New England on divisional weekend and not beat
- 26:09them. Oh, I'm, I'm in the same
- 26:11direction. Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:13Just the teams that we mentioned there, Buffalo or Houston, Yep,
- 26:17making their way there. Chargers, yes.
- 26:19Got a shot? No doubt wide open.
- 26:22You know, we don't get this in the NFL.
- 26:23So let's do the NFC real quick and then we'll get to Elliot
- 26:26Clef. How many teams legitimately can
- 26:28win represent the NFC After last night?
- 26:32Do we eliminate the Eagles from the conversation?
- 26:34Yes, I agree. I agree.
- 26:37I can win the. Win the conference?
- 26:39Win the conference. Are there 3 or 4?
- 26:41There's 2 for sure, the Rams and Packers.
- 26:43Yes. After that, who's your third?
- 26:47Seahawks. Why I love them?
- 26:50You love I. I would not be shocked if
- 26:52Seattle's playing for a Super Bowl.
- 26:54I would be. I I won't be.
- 26:56Donald can't suck every big game now.
- 27:00He has it to this point to be fair.
- 27:03And it's done at every big game, too.
- 27:04He struggled. He struggled against the Vikings
- 27:06a couple weeks ago. I like the Seahawks team.
- 27:09I like the. I like the receivers.
- 27:11Oh, I love Smith and. Jagna, the kid they got from New
- 27:15Orleans, can flat out fly. I think they're in a good spot.
- 27:17What about the Niners? To be determined.
- 27:22OK, getting healthier, Yeah, like the direction that they're
- 27:25certainly ending, but still TBD for beyond them.
- 27:28So Tampa. No, no, that team's broken.
- 27:32Chicago. No, they get there.
- 27:34No. So, Rams, Packers, and where
- 27:38else do you go? That's the list.
- 27:39You've got 2. That's the list.
- 27:41I would throw in the other two NFC West teams and I'd put
- 27:44Niners at the at 4:00, fourth most likely to get there.
- 27:49And put the Niners above the Seahawks.
- 27:51You would do they play each other?
- 27:53Yet? They got another game against
- 27:55each other. Who did they finish with the
- 27:58final season? Niners got the Titans this week,
- 28:00you know, at the Colts. Home for the Bears, home for the
- 28:04Seahawks. What do the Rams have left?
- 28:11And the and the Rams and the Seahawks play a week from
- 28:14Thursday. They do.
- 28:15Is that the final? Oh, no, it's not.
- 28:18Because Christmas is Thursday, right?
- 28:20Is Christmas Thursday? Yeah, it is.
- 28:21Yeah. And that's Denver, Kansas City.
- 28:24Three games that day, Yeah, yeah.
- 28:25But it's not on. Or is it on prime?
- 28:29Yes, the night game will be the Chiefs and Broncos is Netflix
- 28:33has the Vikings, has the first Lions and the Commanders and the
- 28:37Cowboys. Yeah, we from Thursday night.
- 28:40That's appointment TV. You love Sam Darnold.
- 28:42I do. I don't love him.
- 28:45I like the team to win despite the quarterback.
- 28:48Who'd you rather have, Darnold or Nicks?
- 28:51Oppo next. It's not close.
- 28:53It's. 1230 Miller and Condon, we'll take a time out.
- 28:55We'll come back. We'll be joined by Elliott Clef.

- 29:38Amazon Lead off man Matt Poston covers the Big 12 for Heartland
- 29:43College sports. He's with us at 1:30 Ellie Cleft
- 29:4624/7 Sports. He joins the program.
- 29:50Hello, Elliot. How are you, Sir?
- 29:53I'm good. How are you, Ken?
- 29:53I'm. Good.
- 29:54I appreciate you coming on, giving us a few minutes.
- 29:56I'll get to basketball in just a second.
- 29:58Just put a bow on. At least where we're at so far
- 30:01in football, we know that I was going to play Vanderbilt in that
- 30:05game. Do you think that Pavi is going
- 30:07to play? Have you heard either yay or
- 30:10nay? I'm not sure why he'd bow out.
- 30:12I mean, I don't think he's got an NFL career, but far be it
- 30:15from me. What are you hearing about A
- 30:18holdouts are not going to play, but Iowa and then in particular
- 30:23Pavia with Vanderbilt, Well. Start with Pavia, I haven't
- 30:27heard anything on that front. My expectation is that he'll
- 30:30play as far as I know. I actually I'm pretty sure I
- 30:34heard this on a broadcast the other day.
- 30:36Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he's
- 30:40fighting for another year of eligibility and I'm that's not a
- 30:43joke. So if that's the case, he will
- 30:46most likely almost definitely be playing this this this bowl
- 30:51game. But yeah, it would surprise me
- 30:53either way. If he doesn't play.
- 30:54I don't think he's, you know, a top three round pick, even a
- 30:59pick at all, you know, so I I would be surprised if if he
- 31:03decides to opt out doesn't really seem like his style
- 31:06either, But but who knows? I'm in terms of Iowa.
- 31:10Kirk Variance said it on a zoom call with us with the media the
- 31:14the other day that he does not expect any opt out for the bowl
- 31:17game for Iowa. So not not really surprised by
- 31:20that. Iowa doesn't really have a, you
- 31:22know, a Caleb Johnson this year. You know, you can maybe point to
- 31:25a Jennings dunker as a guy who's been mocked in in first round
- 31:29drafts, but he's he's that's not that's not who Jennings is at
- 31:33all at all. He'll he'll want to play in his
- 31:35final game that that he can play in at Iowa.
- 31:37Yeah, I saw Dunker yesterday in first round mock draft.
- 31:40Yeah, still there. Absolutely.
- 31:42Had a good season. That offensive line had a good
- 31:44season. They are a finalist for the Joe
- 31:46Moore Award. Plays Indiana.
- 31:48Who and I win? One other, I think.
- 31:50Yeah. Anyways, go ahead Sir.
- 31:51They I put it together and and you look at next year though,
- 31:55they're gonna be losing some big pieces including Jennings
- 31:57Dunker, a three-year starter in Logan Jones and feels like the
- 32:00pieces are in place for them next season to have a pretty
- 32:03good offensive line. That's a pretty good starting
- 32:04place. When you go into the portal
- 32:06season starting here in January, knowing that at minimum that
- 32:10offensive line looks like it's going to be at least solid.
- 32:12How do you see the offensive line and probably a place
- 32:14they're not going to be shopping?
- 32:15Elliot? You know, they, they could go
- 32:19out and get a depth piece. You know, I I I do think that is
- 32:22is something that I will want to do actually just a a guy, not so
- 32:27much a A1 year rental like they've had with like the Dejon
- 32:31Parker's, the Rusty Fest, the Bryce George's who Rusty Fest is
- 32:34the only one of that trio who actually contributed a a good
- 32:38amount of snaps. But yeah, I mean, this is a
- 32:41phenomenal starting point going into another year.
- 32:43And with Tate Peeper and Trevor Locke could presumably coming
- 32:46back, Michael Mizlinski back for his final year of eligibility
- 32:50thanks to a medical waiver. Leighton Jones with a bunch of
- 32:54reps that left guard this year with both Steven having some
- 32:56injuries here and there. And then Jack Dozler, who dubbed
- 32:59in for for Jennings dunker at right tackle and started the
- 33:04year switching off with Trevor Lock at that left tackle spot.
- 33:07So you've got you might not have a ton of starting experience,
- 33:11but you've got a bunch of experience coming back and and
- 33:13veteran leadership on that offensive line.
- 33:16By the way, Oregon was the other one in the the Joe Moore Award
- 33:20running. But yeah, I mean, hats off to
- 33:23George Barnett, right? Like he came in through this
- 33:26program and the, the recruiting and, and where things sat with
- 33:30the offensive line was just a mess.
- 33:31And, and he completely turned it around.
- 33:34Obviously you had Linderbaum at the time, but other than that, a
- 33:37bunch of young guys and a bunch of guys who just weren't very
- 33:40good. And he, he built that that group
- 33:43and he built it with guys that were politics guys that weren't
- 33:46even his, like Jennings Dunker, Logan Jones.
- 33:48I mean, Logan Jones was brought in as a defensive tackle, but
- 33:50still, Jennings dunker was a politics recruit and and Barnett
- 33:54came in and and shaped the room. So what he wants it to be, he's
- 33:57got his guys on the line now and they're one of the best
- 33:59offensive line, if not the best offensive line in college
- 34:02football. What will they do with the
- 34:03quarterback position as far as I will, will they be looking for
- 34:06someone? Obviously we there's, I, I think
- 34:09Hank Brown is going to have a decision to make.
- 34:12There is no, what do they call it the spring a portal anymore.
- 34:17There's there's only one. So if he's going to, it's going
- 34:19to have to come relatively soon. You can't go through spring
- 34:22practice and then, you know, enter the portal right after
- 34:25that, that two week period. What does Hank Brown do?
- 34:27And are they going to be looking?
- 34:29I would assume that they're going to have to be right?
- 34:31Or is it all dependent on Hank Brown's decision?
- 34:34Well, I'll tell you this just got a bit of info the yesterday
- 34:38actually, that Hank Brown has has started to practice really
- 34:42well in this this bowl prep window.
- 34:45So don't count him out. He's going to give Hecklinski
- 34:48everything that that he can to win that.
- 34:51You know, I may not win it, but compete for the starting job
- 34:54going into next season. It might be a competition
- 34:57through spring based on on that. You know, it's only they've only
- 35:00practiced twice full go with the twos and the threes in bowl prep
- 35:04over. They went Friday and then
- 35:05Monday. But apparently I think this
- 35:07looked pretty good and Hecklinski was actually miss
- 35:10practice. He was just sick.
- 35:11But so brown got got a ton of reps and and apparently looked
- 35:15pretty good. So don't count him out if if he
- 35:18does enter the portal, you know, which is still a possibility.
- 35:21Would not surprise me if I would does go after a quarterback.
- 35:24They like to have four scholarship guys and a walk on
- 35:27in that room for the sake of well, we saw why in 2024 when
- 35:33Jackson Stratton had to play. So especially if Brown portal
- 35:37then they'll they'll look for a quarterback in in my mind die.
- 35:40But I think they're I think they're happy with four
- 35:42scholarship guys and a walk on. Obviously that being hecklinsky,
- 35:45Brown messenger, Jimmy Sullivan and then Fitzgerald at that walk
- 35:51on spot. So if they do, you know, if
- 35:54Brown sticks and they do decide to add another walk on piece, I
- 35:58would imagine it would be like a Stratton situation where they're
- 36:01just like, hey, this is a guy with the depth, with a bit of
- 36:03depth that have some college experience that can come in and
- 36:06add some some, you know, leadership or or, you know, just
- 36:09experience to the room. That would be my guess.
- 36:12But if Brown doesn't stick, then then you got to go get somebody
- 36:15because I don't think you can go into the season getting a
- 36:19little. Funky in that direction, Yeah,
- 36:22it seemed like we were on the verge of of losing.
- 36:25Ellie and we're out of time anyway, so.
- 36:27Unfortunate. So what do you think?
- 36:29I mean, that that's encouraging for Hank Brown that he's
- 36:31practicing. Well, you made the point
- 36:34yesterday. I don't.
- 36:35Who are we speaking to? And he's reminded me, because I
- 36:38forgot all about it, that there's only one portal.
- 36:41I mean, there's only one transfer that's only open once.
- 36:44You better get in. You can't go through spring
- 36:47practice and then you know what? But it's probably not in the
- 36:49cards. I'm going to move on after that.
- 36:51You can't. It's too late.
- 36:52Now, no doubt I look at it and I think of a guy like Jazzy on
- 36:56Patterson. Yeah.
- 36:59Go back home, right? Florida Atlantic, you know,
- 37:01Florida Internet, you know, something like that where you
- 37:03can probably go in there, be a starter and get a cedar season
- 37:06to do that. Those are the kind of pieces you
- 37:09look at the offensive line or there's some of those veteran
- 37:11guys that are looking around. I know some conversations have
- 37:13already been had. They're going through the
- 37:15one-on-one with Coach Ference and position coaches.
- 37:18There's been a few guys that said you look at those red shirt
- 37:21sophomores haven't played yet. Yep, probably not going to
- 37:25happen, right? And then they have been, some of
- 37:27them I know have been told I guess that probably not going to
- 37:32play here, might be able to be a special teamer, but that's it.
- 37:34How many of those guys depart? A lot of those guys say, I'm
- 37:38fine with that. Local guys love this experience
- 37:41at University of Iowa. They're fine with it.
- 37:42I'm quite happy being a deaf piece until we know that portion
- 37:46of it. Here's another thing.
- 37:48Do we know what the roster limits going to be next season?
- 37:51No, that's a great point. No, I don't think we do.
- 37:54Shouldn't that be something that we should know?
- 37:58We they just changed the rules on the fly last year.
- 37:59Yeah, they did. And then all these guys that
- 38:01were some places, like in Iowa City and Ames, did it right and
- 38:06tried to help these guys find homes.
- 38:08Other places lunged for it. Essentially, yes.
- 38:11For doing the right thing. And the SEC, they still had 125
- 38:14guy rosters where our in state schools did it right, got down
- 38:18to 1050. Just no, no, actually we're
- 38:20going to walk that back. Yeah.
- 38:22What a mess. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 38:24Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller Cotton, final couple
- 38:34of minutes here. Our number one, our number 2
- 38:37will start with Matt Snyder winter meetings going on in
- 38:39baseball. He's also published a book that
- 38:42has just become available as of this week.
- 38:45I believe Amazon has it. It's the lead off man.
- 38:48We'll talk to him about that. He's a Hall of Fame voter.
- 38:50Pick his brain on that as well. And then Matt Poston covers the
- 38:53Big 12 for Heartland College Sports.
- 38:55You just mentioned the Cowboys during the break and that there
- 38:58still is a path. They're not going to win a wild
- 39:03card. I don't think so.
- 39:05No, I don't think so either. But they do have a chance to
- 39:08catch the Eagles. I think so.
- 39:10So it starts with winning out, right?
- 39:12They have to, and here's what they have left, and it's
- 39:15anything but daunting. They have the 28th easiest
- 39:17schedule remaining Chargers would be their most difficult
- 39:20game. Then they play.
- 39:21They've got the Giants, the Commanders and the Vikings and
- 39:25the Vikings on Sunday night, which I'm still surprised they
- 39:27didn't move. I really am.
- 39:29I get it. It's the Cowboys, but we're
- 39:31football fans. There's more football fans in
- 39:33general than there are Cowboys fans.
- 39:34But more people watch the Cowboys than most anybody else.
- 39:38Piss on that. Anyways, that's what we're
- 39:40getting. 1061 if they win out. And and the Eagles, conversely,
- 39:46where's the see? Their schedule's even easier.
- 39:48They've got the 30th easiest schedule.
- 39:50Bills, Raiders, Commanders. Twice.
- 39:53So what do you look at it win this week at home against the
- 39:56Raiders for Eagles? I mean this is a get right game
- 39:58if there have ever been one the. Raiders are so bad.
- 40:01They go to the commanders. I mean, that's the one.
- 40:03The Commanders looked awful last week against the Vikings.
- 40:06That really looked really good against the Broncos.
- 40:08Really good. At Buffalo, you put that in the
- 40:10outcome. Basically, what you need if
- 40:12you're a Cowboys fan is them to lose one of those two games
- 40:15against the Commanders and Buffalo.
- 40:17And Buffalo? Not a stretch.
- 40:19No, I don't think so. I mean, the Cowboys have to win
- 40:21out. And the Cowboys have to win out.
- 40:25Not dead yet. No, I'm not dead yet.
- 40:26You know who else isn't dead? Who, Yeah, Don't tell.
- 40:29Me, I was playing on the ESPN playoff machine and it spit out
- 40:33the seven seed Chiefs. They open up on the road in
- 40:35Denver. I know you'd be excited about
- 40:37that. Chiefs have to beat the Titans,
- 40:41the Raiders, the Chargers and the Broncos.
- 40:43We'll see. Hour 2 is next.
- 40:44Miller and Condon on One O 6.3 KXNO.
