- 0:01Speaker 1: Wave.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hey, this week's episode is about the Tiger Slam of
- 0:08Speaker 2: 2000 into 2001, when Tiger Woods won all those majors
- 0:11Speaker 2: in a row. We recorded this weeks before you are
- 0:15Speaker 2: going to see it, which is to say before he
- 0:18Speaker 2: was arrested for DUI. So we didn't know about that
- 0:22Speaker 2: at the time. Thought you should know that first. Ladies
- 0:33Speaker 2: and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:37Speaker 2: My name is Beaumontee Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:39Speaker 2: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:43Speaker 2: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:45Speaker 2: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:48Speaker 2: a hater. It is Time Machine Tuesday. And today we
- 0:53Speaker 2: are going to talk about the legendary Tiger Slam of
- 0:57Speaker 2: 2000 and 2001. And joining us, is our old friend,
- 1:01Speaker 2: check him out, at ESPN, America's caddy, himself, Michael Collins.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What's going on?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Man, it's been way too long, my friend. Way, way
- 1:10Speaker 3: too long.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Dude, it's been too long, and I still look back
- 1:13Speaker 2: on the first time my buddy Shannon booked you for
- 1:16Speaker 2: the right time when it was a radio show, and
- 1:18Speaker 2: he was like, we got a Michael Collins on.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I was like, okay. And he's like, he works at
- 1:22Speaker 1: ESPN Golf. I was like, okay. He's like, he is
- 1:25Speaker 1: a former caddy. I'm like, okay. He goes, Andy is black.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And I say, oh, what?
- 1:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:35Speaker 2: It was so funny because he built the action up
- 1:38Speaker 2: and I am sure he did it on purpose, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: he did it in a non-comedic way.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And then it was like, okay, cool.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And then next thing I know, you tell the stories
- 1:46Speaker 2: about it wasn't Chamblee that you asked if he wanted
- 1:48Speaker 2: to fight. It was somebody else that you asked. No, well,
- 1:51Speaker 2: I think you told me about somebody you wanted to fight,
- 1:53Speaker 2: and I thought it was Chamblee because I had seen
- 1:55Speaker 2: the story, and you told me it was actually somebody
- 1:58Speaker 2: else that you had invited to fight.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Yeah, well, that was Daniel Chopra, the guy when I
- 2:03Speaker 3: was caddying for Daniel Chopra. That's what you're remembering there, too. Yeah,
- 2:08Speaker 3: it was crazy times, man. Crazy times.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You want to go?
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it was just one of those crazy moments,
- 2:19Speaker 3: Where it's like, I didn't know what was wrong. And
- 2:22Speaker 3: he thought something that was happening that actually wasn't happening.
- 2:26Speaker 3: And it was just setting him off really bad. And
- 2:29Speaker 3: so we look back and laugh about it now. We're
- 2:33Speaker 3: still friends. I love him, his wife, kids, and all that.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But in the moment, it was one of those like, man,
- 2:41Speaker 3: what is going on? And as a caddy too, it's like, okay,
- 2:46Speaker 3: this is not okay during... the tournament for like the
- 2:50Speaker 3: contention to be like this. So it's like, I got
- 2:53Speaker 3: to do something to change, to change up this attitude.
- 2:56Speaker 3: And if I put the bag down, it was like,
- 2:59Speaker 3: you want to go like this? I mean, and I,
- 3:01Speaker 3: it's not like I hadn't done anything crazy like that before.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I was caddying for a guy named Jumbo Elliott, John Elliott.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Football player.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Well, yeah, but no, not the Giants football player. This
- 3:12Speaker 3: was the golfer, John Elliott.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Hold on, man.
- 3:15Speaker 2: He got to get, he got to, you can't do that.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I'm saying him.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Was he jumbo enough to be jumbo in the face
- 3:23Speaker 2: of the other jumbo?
- 3:24Speaker 3: Two reasons they called him jumbo. My guy, the golfer,
- 3:27Speaker 3: named jumbo because he has a huge head.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And because at the time, he was one of the
- 3:33Speaker 3: longest hitters out there. It was like him and John
- 3:36Speaker 3: Daly could just send it. So they called him Jumbo
- 3:40Speaker 3: as well. And in the golf space, you know, back then,
- 3:44Speaker 3: you know, this was before any kind of fantasy football
- 3:47Speaker 3: or anything like that. So it was like golfers weren't
- 3:49Speaker 3: really into football all that much back then. So they
- 3:53Speaker 3: didn't realize that there was a Jumbo Elliott on the Giants.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And as an Eagles fan, I knew there was a
- 3:58Speaker 3: Jumbo Elliott on the Giants, who, ironically enough, married a golfer.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Married a golfer from the LPGA Tour. Crazy enough. Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 3: But my Jumbo Elliott, this was what I was getting
- 4:12Speaker 3: at was that after all that fighting stuff, when I
- 4:16Speaker 3: was caddying for Jumbo, he was having a tough time.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And I slammed the bag down at one point and
- 4:21Speaker 3: told him he sucked in the middle of the tournament
- 4:23Speaker 3: during a round on a par five. And I slammed
- 4:26Speaker 3: it down and I was like, yeah, you suck. Maybe
- 4:28Speaker 3: you should try darts or bowling or something after this.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And I gave him a smart ass look. And then
- 4:34Speaker 3: he proceeded to go birdie, birdie, hole in one after that.
- 4:40Speaker 3: And then some other golfers that were in the group
- 4:43Speaker 3: at the end of the round gave me their phone
- 4:45Speaker 3: number and was like, hey, call me when you got
- 4:47Speaker 3: a week off from comedy because every now and then
- 4:49Speaker 3: I need to kick the ass like that too. So
- 4:52Speaker 3: it's all about for caddy and sometimes it's all about
- 4:54Speaker 3: knowing the right thing to say at the right time
- 4:57Speaker 3: to get your man motivated. Or sometimes when not to
- 5:01Speaker 3: say anything at all. Just let your do be mad.
- 5:05Speaker 3: And like, you know, and sometimes that works too. That's
- 5:08Speaker 3: why I loved caddying so much. Cause that the psychology
- 5:13Speaker 3: of what goes into being on a guy's bag and
- 5:16Speaker 3: like trying to bring the best out of them. It's
- 5:19Speaker 3: easy when the guy's at his best, you know, caddying
- 5:23Speaker 3: for tiger in 2000. And I could have done that.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Anybody could have done the bag down, give the number
- 5:31Speaker 3: and watch what club he picked up.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Watch it.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So we're going to talk about the Tiger Slam, right?
- 5:39Speaker 2: I want to lead people into it, both a little
- 5:42Speaker 2: bit of the history of what was going on in golf.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And I always like to tell people my personal history
- 5:47Speaker 2: of observing golf. I had never sat and watched a
- 5:51Speaker 2: round of golf in my life until the 96 Masters.
- 5:56Speaker 2: The final round, and I don't know why I watched.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I don't have an answer for what it was, but
- 6:01Speaker 2: I turned it on. It really wasn't supposed to be compelling.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Greg Norman was up six shots, I believe it was,
- 6:07Speaker 2: going into the final round and was losing by the turf.
- 6:13Speaker 2: It was the most shocking, immediate collapse that I had
- 6:17Speaker 2: ever seen. He didn't even wait until it got close.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He immediately gave up the booty. He walked out there
- 6:23Speaker 2: on tee number one, dropped his draws, and the booty
- 6:26Speaker 2: was on display for everybody. It is the, I don't
- 6:31Speaker 2: think there is any comparable choke that anybody could have
- 6:34Speaker 2: because that's all it was.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And golf is a sport where people choke.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You don't really hold it against people in golf the
- 6:38Speaker 2: same way because everybody's got one on the ledger. where
- 6:43Speaker 2: they gave it up. Everybody sees it. There's nowhere for
- 6:45Speaker 2: you to hide. All of these things. But it was
- 6:47Speaker 2: the first time I'd watched the Masters. It was in SD,
- 6:50Speaker 2: which is an important note because the Masters took a
- 6:52Speaker 2: big jump in HD.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But I could watch it, and it was the first
- 6:55Speaker 1: time that I was like, oh, I get what's going
- 6:57Speaker 1: on here. That fall.
- 7:00Speaker 2: is when the Tiger Woods thing gets started, right? He
- 7:03Speaker 2: has declared as a pro, he started to win a
- 7:06Speaker 2: few tournaments in the fall, and then we come around
- 7:08Speaker 2: to the Masters in 97, where he famously shot a
- 7:12Speaker 2: 40 on the front nine in the first round and
- 7:14Speaker 2: a 30 on the back nine before he proceeded to
- 7:19Speaker 2: curb stop the rest of the field the whole way, right?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Like, it was like, oh, okay, he's here. I don't
- 7:26Speaker 1: know if it's possible.
- 7:27Speaker 2: For there to be anything comparable because in team sports,
- 7:29Speaker 2: nobody really wins that young.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And if you do, it's because you're part of an ensemble.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He beat everybody's ass so bad in there and then
- 7:38Speaker 2: didn't win another major until.
- 7:40Speaker 3: The 99 PGA, right?
- 7:40Speaker 1: Like, there were... Well, you can talk about that part.
- 7:46Speaker 1: He didn't win that major.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And I guess I say that because it's kind of
- 7:50Speaker 2: like when a young guy does something.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You're like, oh, he's going to be kicking ass forever.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But it didn't happen right away.
- 7:55Speaker 3: No, because he was making swing changes.
- 7:58Speaker 2: By the way, which is crazy because he just beat
- 8:01Speaker 2: everybody down.
- 8:01Speaker 3: The way that he won in 97, everyone was like, yo, okay,
- 8:07Speaker 3: it's over. Like this dude. And you heard people say it.
- 8:11Speaker 3: This kid's going to win forever. He's going to win everything.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Like Jim Nance said, historic. It was a historic win
- 8:19Speaker 3: at the Masters, and it kind of made everyone in
- 8:21Speaker 3: golf go, oh, snap. Like, how many times, even in
- 8:27Speaker 3: the 90s, did we hear child prodigies, not just in golf,
- 8:32Speaker 3: but in all sports, like, this is the next one.
- 8:34Speaker 3: And are they ever the next one?
- 8:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Bruh. They ain't never the next one. They'd be like, hey, man,
- 8:42Speaker 3: weren't you supposed to be the next one? Yes, welcome
- 8:44Speaker 3: to Walmart.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Would you like a car?
- 8:49Speaker 3: But Tiger was like, holy crap, this kid is going
- 8:52Speaker 3: to do it. But he decided, nah, my swing is
- 8:56Speaker 3: not what I need it to be. And so he
- 8:58Speaker 3: goes through this period where, if you remember, way back
- 9:02Speaker 3: in the day, my boy Curtis Strange did an interview
- 9:05Speaker 3: with him at Milwaukee. And Tiger, that's the second place sucks. Like,
- 9:09Speaker 3: I just only want to win. And that's the Curtis Strange, oh,
- 9:12Speaker 3: you'll learn, kid. You'll learn. And that was... So he
- 9:15Speaker 3: wins the Masters, but then has that stretch where it's like,
- 9:19Speaker 3: maybe Curtis Strange was right. Like, winning, maybe he not.
- 9:24Speaker 3: But then... When he comes back and wins that PGA
- 9:28Speaker 3: in 99, you're like, oh, okay. Like, he figured something out.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Just like the front 940 in 97, and then something clicks,
- 9:37Speaker 3: and on the back nine, you're like, oh, that guy. Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 3: that guy.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And after winning in 99 at that PGA Championship, you're
- 9:44Speaker 3: thinking to yourself, oh, if he figures something out, like,
- 9:48Speaker 3: that dude might be back. And so that was.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And keep this in mind, let me jump in right quick.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It is slowed down enough between April of 97 and
- 9:58Speaker 2: August of 99 that the game decided to try to
- 10:02Speaker 2: throw the.
- 10:02Speaker 1: David Duvall thing out there. Right. Like like it's like,
- 10:05Speaker 1: you know, maybe there's a rival at play here.
- 10:08Speaker 2: David Duvall, who, by the way, my favorite factoid of
- 10:10Speaker 2: David Duvall for people who don't really follow golf, they
- 10:13Speaker 2: already know this. David Duvall people so rich that when
- 10:17Speaker 2: they say Duvall in Jacksonville.
- 10:19Speaker 1: They talking about them. He's one of them.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Like every city you go to, that street is named
- 10:28Speaker 2: after somebody and you don't know who it is, but
- 10:29Speaker 2: they crazy rich.
- 10:30Speaker 1: All right, what about the whole county, bro?
- 10:32Speaker 3: That's what I'm trying to say. Like some people have
- 10:35Speaker 3: streets named after them. Some people might even have a
- 10:39Speaker 3: town named after them, but the county, the whole county, Bruh.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I mean, they still saying your family name at football
- 10:52Speaker 3: games in the NFL today.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Yeah. And people, that's the thing I will say about
- 10:59Speaker 3: David too. At that time, he was, you know, he
- 11:02Speaker 3: was the dude that wore the Oakleys and he was
- 11:04Speaker 3: stone cold. But people don't know, even to this day,
- 11:08Speaker 3: he's one of the funniest guys that was out on
- 11:10Speaker 3: the PGA Tour. Like he was on the DL, super funny.
- 11:14Speaker 3: a great personality, but also very shy in front of
- 11:17Speaker 3: cameras and out around strangers, people he didn't know. So he,
- 11:21Speaker 3: you put them Oakleys on and he was like, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 3: that dude just looks like he thinks he's better than
- 11:25Speaker 3: everybody else. And it's like, no, that's kind of how
- 11:28Speaker 3: super duper shy people, they come off too. But you don't,
- 11:31Speaker 3: if all you see on TV is the dude in
- 11:32Speaker 3: the glasses who don't look like he's smiling or like
- 11:35Speaker 3: he don't do the fist pump or nothing like that,
- 11:38Speaker 3: then you're like, man, look at this dude. Who do
- 11:40Speaker 3: you think he is? But that's not honestly who he was.
- 11:43Speaker 3: But yeah, at That was in that moment where it
- 11:45Speaker 3: was like, uh-oh, Tiger got a dude who's going to
- 11:48Speaker 3: threaten him for the crown. Like, this dude is coming.
- 11:51Speaker 2: It seemed possible. We get to the year 2000, though. Tiger,
- 11:55Speaker 2: after dominating the course in 97, and by that time.
- 12:00Speaker 1: had they begun tweaking the course yet? I believe they
- 12:03Speaker 1: had begun.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Tweaking the course. Oh, yeah, the Tiger proofing after the
- 12:07Speaker 3: 97 Masters. Everybody was like, you know what we need
- 12:10Speaker 3: to do? We need to back them T's up.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yo, yeah, yeah, let's talk about this.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Like, it would have been one thing If everybody went
- 12:18Speaker 2: out there and destroyed the course and thereby, you know
- 12:21Speaker 2: what I mean?
- 12:22Speaker 1: Like, you'd be just like, yo, the course, the game
- 12:24Speaker 1: has outrun the course.
- 12:25Speaker 2: We need to change the course because everybody's out here
- 12:28Speaker 2: shooting 20 under and that's not what it's supposed to be.
- 12:31Speaker 1: That's not what happened. One dude did it.
- 12:36Speaker 2: And they decided, you know, that's actually kind of not
- 12:39Speaker 2: fair to the rest of the kids, don't you think?
- 12:41Speaker 3: This is also where they tell you that, like, sometimes
- 12:44Speaker 3: marketing is a lie. It's just say the opposite of
- 12:48Speaker 3: what you're doing because it's going to sound amazing. You
- 12:51Speaker 3: know what I mean? You know, it's going to sound odd.
- 12:54Speaker 3: People are like, yeah, that's a good idea. What did
- 12:57Speaker 3: they call it? We're tiger proofing. And what did they
- 13:00Speaker 3: actually do? That's field proof. You made the golf course
- 13:05Speaker 3: so that pretty much only Tiger Woods had a chance
- 13:09Speaker 3: because nobody was hitting it as far as him and
- 13:12Speaker 3: hitting the shots he was hitting during tournaments. And so
- 13:14Speaker 3: what you do for the dudes that couldn't hit it
- 13:17Speaker 3: as far as him, we should make the course longer.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I don't think that's, I don't.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Okay, if you're going to roll with that. But when
- 13:27Speaker 3: they did it, everybody was like, we're tiger proof in
- 13:30Speaker 3: the course. Okay.
- 13:32Speaker 2: They were at wit's end. That's what that was. They
- 13:34Speaker 2: were like, I don't know what to do. Now, the
- 13:36Speaker 2: one thing they did, correct me if I'm wrong, it
- 13:38Speaker 2: was a lot of right to left shots. It's almost
- 13:41Speaker 2: like they went and found the weaknesses that they thought
- 13:43Speaker 2: existed in Tiger's game.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And they tried to create holes that played right into that.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Well, Tiger's miss at the time was the snap hook
- 13:52Speaker 3: to the right. So if you make a lot of
- 13:54Speaker 3: holes where it feeds a little bit from right to left,
- 13:59Speaker 3: you're like, yeah. So if he tries to hit it
- 14:01Speaker 3: too hard, it's going to go hard to the right.
- 14:04Speaker 3: The problem was Tiger's go-to shot was right to left.
- 14:09Speaker 3: So when he was feeling it or under pressure, what's
- 14:12Speaker 3: the shot he could always count on? Oh, the hole
- 14:16Speaker 3: goes the way I need it to. Thank you very much.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Where it actually might have helped if they did it
- 14:20Speaker 3: the opposite way.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but he did not win a Masters after 97.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Going into 2000, Vijay Singh won the 2000 Masters, and
- 14:29Speaker 2: it is important to note that he won the 2000
- 14:31Speaker 2: Masters because after that, wasn't nobody else winning nothing.
- 14:34Speaker 1: For a very, very, very... long time, at least not
- 14:40Speaker 1: as a major.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Now, I want to stop and pause just for a
- 14:43Speaker 2: second because we've talked about Tiger and we mentioned David Duvall,
- 14:46Speaker 2: but it's not like this was happening and it was
- 14:49Speaker 2: like some weak time in the history of professional golf.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Like, it was a deep field of players. There's a
- 14:56Speaker 1: lot of guys out there.
- 14:57Speaker 3: He was going against a lot of golf Hall of Famers. Like,
- 15:01Speaker 3: this is the time you were talking about. Greg Norman
- 15:04Speaker 3: was still out there.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Nick Faldo, who won that 96 Masters, he's still out there.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Bernhard Langer in his prime, too. I mean, Vijay Singh.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Phil Mickelson was coming on at the time as well.
- 15:17Speaker 3: He was the young gun. You said David Duvall was
- 15:20Speaker 3: also out there. You had a guy like Hal Sutton,
- 15:23Speaker 3: you know, who famously later on, like, beat a right
- 15:27Speaker 3: club today. So there were... The competition that Tiger was
- 15:32Speaker 3: going up against, like, that was a still... We got
- 15:36Speaker 3: spoiled by Tiger, so we think it was Tiger and nobody.
- 15:40Speaker 3: But he was beating... Ernie Els was out there too.
- 15:43Speaker 3: So he was beating big-name dudes. And if you remember,
- 15:48Speaker 3: at the start of that 2000 season, Tiger didn't win
- 15:53Speaker 3: the first five events and actually finished tied for 13th twice.
- 15:57Speaker 3: So he finished... Tied for 13th at AT & T
- 16:01Speaker 3: at Pebble Beach, which was the Pro-Am at the time.
- 16:04Speaker 3: I think there was terrible weather there. But then in L.A.,
- 16:08Speaker 3: where he's never played great there either at the time,
- 16:11Speaker 3: that was called the Nissan Open. Today it's his tournament
- 16:14Speaker 3: called the Genesis Invitational. He only finished tied for 13th there.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Everything else was inside the top 10. But it wasn't
- 16:21Speaker 3: like he came out those first five events and was gangbusters, right?
- 16:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I was like, oh, OK, this is all right. Not,
- 16:30Speaker 3: you know, it's OK.
- 16:33Speaker 2: By the way, Mickelson, the great beneficiary of the Tiger Proofing,
- 16:36Speaker 2: because the thing that people do not realize is a
- 16:39Speaker 2: left handed player.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Never won the Masters in the 20th century. Not one.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Now, you could say it was a technology issue and
- 16:45Speaker 2: all these other things, but Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, all
- 16:48Speaker 2: those lefties won after they started fucking with the course.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Well, and two, Phil and Bubba are both, and I
- 16:56Speaker 3: misspoke on, it wasn't 2000, it was 2001. Yeah. 2001,
- 17:00Speaker 3: when Tiger didn't, started the season and wasn't in those
- 17:04Speaker 3: first five tournaments, didn't get any wins or anything like that.
- 17:07Speaker 3: So it was like, trending towards that Tiger slam. So 2001,
- 17:11Speaker 3: Tiger doesn't do anything like gangbusters coming out. But you
- 17:15Speaker 3: were talking about Phil and Bubba. So both of them
- 17:18Speaker 3: left-handed fade the golf ball. And at the Masters, for
- 17:23Speaker 3: a lefty hitting a fade, which is a very comfortable shot,
- 17:27Speaker 3: even though Bubba can do it both ways, but it
- 17:31Speaker 3: favors a lefty that can hit it far and hit
- 17:33Speaker 3: a fade. So you got two guys... who won the
- 17:36Speaker 3: masters that loved hitting a high bomb fade on a
- 17:42Speaker 3: golf course that favors a high far fade for, for
- 17:47Speaker 3: a right-handed golfer. That's a draw. And so it's easy
- 17:50Speaker 3: to snap it. It's easy to snap it.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Now we get to 2000. The U S open is
- 17:58Speaker 2: at pebble beach. Um, I will let you get into
- 18:03Speaker 2: the description of it because I can't. I just know
- 18:05Speaker 2: Tiger won the damn thing by 15 shots.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Here's a simple thing. Golf is a sport that can't
- 18:12Speaker 3: be perfected, right? Except in 2000 at the U.S. Open
- 18:18Speaker 3: at Pebble Beach, Tiger did something that's never been done.
- 18:22Speaker 3: There's plenty of times where dudes beat golfers. In 2000
- 18:28Speaker 3: at the U.S. Open, it's real easy. Tiger beat the game.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Tiger Woods at 2000 at the US Open, he was
- 18:38Speaker 3: Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl. He was not only the
- 18:44Speaker 3: only one under par, he beat the number, second place
- 18:49Speaker 3: was plus three. He was minus 12. So when I,
- 18:58Speaker 3: and the USGA prides itself on, on setting up their
- 19:02Speaker 3: golf courses, especially back then. They would let the golf
- 19:05Speaker 3: course get out of hand where it would be unplayable
- 19:09Speaker 3: for a regular PGA Tour event. They would have to
- 19:12Speaker 3: stop play. But the USGA was like, nah, par is
- 19:16Speaker 3: going to be the winning score. Like, sometimes one over,
- 19:19Speaker 3: and we're cool with that. And dudes are going to
- 19:21Speaker 3: be walking out of here needing Bactine and a massage
- 19:25Speaker 3: because they're going to be so tore up from the
- 19:27Speaker 3: whooping we gave them. Like... But Tiger went out there
- 19:31Speaker 3: and was like Rick James' FBO couch.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Well, what's wild about it to me is I always
- 19:39Speaker 2: wrote about Tiger. The thing about Tiger was that he
- 19:42Speaker 2: was the great eraser, right? Like this was not a
- 19:45Speaker 2: technically perfect game that he played. but he's not Nick Faldo.
- 19:49Speaker 2: He's not Nick price. Who's keeping the ball in the
- 19:51Speaker 2: middle of the fairway and keeping it going. And the
- 19:53Speaker 2: U S open is designed to penalize you for straying, right?
- 19:58Speaker 2: For going left and right. And now you're in this
- 20:00Speaker 2: unthinkable rough. The idea is that these dudes are going
- 20:04Speaker 2: to look like you. when they play on this course, right?
- 20:06Speaker 2: Because they're going to be out there when things go bad.
- 20:09Speaker 2: And he shot 12 under there?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Well, here's the, like, think about the most famous shot
- 20:14Speaker 3: that he hit on that par five, the sixth hole.
- 20:17Speaker 3: There is, on the right side, before the cliff falls
- 20:22Speaker 3: into the Pacific Ocean, at the time, there was probably
- 20:26Speaker 3: 15 yards of I won't even call it rough. It
- 20:32Speaker 3: was like, hey, it was wispy, looked like a wheat field.
- 20:37Speaker 3: He hit a shot into that wheat field where if
- 20:39Speaker 3: anyone else in the field is in there with the
- 20:42Speaker 3: equipment and ball that they had at the time, you
- 20:46Speaker 3: have to just chip out sideways to the fairway because
- 20:50Speaker 3: this is the other thing. If you go for that
- 20:52Speaker 3: green in two, even from the fairway off a little
- 20:56Speaker 3: bit of a downslope, you're hitting over a five-story building. Which,
- 21:02Speaker 3: for pro golfers, like, that's in your head. Now you
- 21:05Speaker 3: put a guy in a wheat field, not in a
- 21:09Speaker 3: perfect fairway where you're like, okay, I still got to
- 21:12Speaker 3: think about this stuff. And this dude takes an iron
- 21:15Speaker 3: out of that, and at the time you heard the
- 21:17Speaker 3: broadcaster say, probably laying up on this. And then you
- 21:21Speaker 3: hear one guy, I don't know if he's.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Laying up here.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And he takes this lash at it, and when it
- 21:28Speaker 3: comes out, like.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I don't know where the term and saying came from,
- 21:35Speaker 3: but boy, it held true there. Silence is deafening. And
- 21:40Speaker 3: when that ball came out, there was... Like, even the
- 21:44Speaker 3: crowd was just like, ugh. And then, just watch. Because, like, um...
- 21:49Speaker 3: Is that ball going to the... And then the people
- 21:53Speaker 3: at the bottom can't see, and the people at the
- 21:55Speaker 3: top are like, we'll just wait for his third shot.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Oh, shit!
- 21:59Speaker 3: Like... And then hops up onto the green and he's
- 22:02Speaker 3: got a putt for Eagle. And you're like, wait, that's,
- 22:06Speaker 3: it's not, that's not possible. And that, I think that
- 22:09Speaker 3: swing in that moment was when the whole world said
- 22:14Speaker 3: to themselves, yep, video game. Like this dude, he went
- 22:19Speaker 3: from Tiger Woods, the golfer to Tiger Woods, the immortal
- 22:24Speaker 3: at the, it was like this dude. Okay. So how
- 22:27Speaker 3: much is second place? Because if you're doing that and
- 22:32Speaker 3: you're the only human in the world at the time
- 22:35Speaker 3: that can do that, like maybe you're not human. And
- 22:38Speaker 3: so we're not playing a fair fight. And this is
- 22:41Speaker 3: why I say that U.S. Open... tiger beat the game
- 22:46Speaker 3: not he didn't beat the field he beat the game
- 22:49Speaker 3: of golf it's when's the last time.
- 22:51Speaker 1: The most unbeatable game that has ever existed.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Against the most beatable organization you know what i mean
- 22:57Speaker 3: when's the last time the usga as an organization had
- 23:01Speaker 3: a golfer make them go like they was ugly crying.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 23:09Speaker 2: He had already brought Augusta National to the, oh, no, no, no,
- 23:13Speaker 2: not him.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Not like this. Cannot be.
- 23:16Speaker 2: And the USGA is just like, yeah, I mean, but look,
- 23:20Speaker 2: we still got it like that because he had not
- 23:21Speaker 2: won the US Open up until this point.
- 23:24Speaker 1: We have to remember.
- 23:25Speaker 2: And I want to run through the progression of the
- 23:27Speaker 2: rounds for people so they understand. The first round of
- 23:29Speaker 2: that tournament played pretty well for everybody. Like Tiger had
- 23:32Speaker 2: a wire to wire.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Win in this.
- 23:33Speaker 2: He shot a 65, but Miguel Angel Jimenez, who I
- 23:36Speaker 2: think tied for second in the tournament, he shot a
- 23:39Speaker 2: five under. John Houston shot a four under. He had
- 23:41Speaker 2: guys like Hale Urban, there's three under. A bunch of
- 23:43Speaker 2: guys at two under. Like people had a pretty good
- 23:47Speaker 2: opening round. The course began to play tougher, but understand this.
- 23:52Speaker 2: At the end of the second round, Tiger is at
- 23:54Speaker 2: eight under. Second place is at two under. At the
- 23:58Speaker 2: end of the third round, he's still at eight under.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It's a par 71. He's still at eight under. But
- 24:03Speaker 2: now it's two over. That's behind him.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Yes, that is. Michael Collins is doing what it looks like.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Everybody start here. And then, oh, hey. Hey man, where
- 24:14Speaker 3: you going? No, no. We're all coming down. Hey, we're
- 24:18Speaker 3: all going to the basement. Why are you going up
- 24:20Speaker 3: to the attic? Where are you going?
- 24:22Speaker 2: Like if they had played four more rounds, Tiger would
- 24:24Speaker 2: have been up all the way up here and everybody
- 24:26Speaker 2: else would have been under the ground.
- 24:27Speaker 1: So he's up 10 at the end of the third round.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And by the end of the final.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Round, he's up 15.
- 24:36Speaker 3: It was one of those things on Sunday where, Even
- 24:42Speaker 3: the announcer was just like, there's no way to make
- 24:45Speaker 3: this dramatic other than all we need to focus on
- 24:49Speaker 3: is this guy and what he's doing. Because no one
- 24:53Speaker 3: had ever seen this before, especially in a tournament like this,
- 24:58Speaker 3: not just with this prestige, but at this place, you know?
- 25:02Speaker 3: I mean, you're talking about a place where Jack Nicklaus
- 25:05Speaker 3: won a US Open, Tom Watson won a US Open,
- 25:08Speaker 3: but not like this. Like no one had ever done
- 25:11Speaker 3: anything like this where there was no drama with the score.
- 25:16Speaker 3: The drama was how much could this dude win by?
- 25:20Speaker 3: You know what I mean? At one point you thought
- 25:23Speaker 3: someone from the USGA would just come out with a
- 25:26Speaker 3: flag and be like, okay, man, you don't even got
- 25:30Speaker 3: to finish.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Just please stop.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Stop, man.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Please just stop, bro. Don't do this.
- 25:35Speaker 1: And the rest of it. And the rest of these
- 25:37Speaker 1: guys are just in it for money.
- 25:39Speaker 2: And I'm not saying that as an insult to those people,
- 25:41Speaker 2: but I remember in 97, I was on the phone
- 25:43Speaker 2: with my brother and I was like, I don't even
- 25:45Speaker 2: know why these other cats are out here.
- 25:46Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, because they cut checks for second.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Like the only thing left to play for, for everybody
- 25:52Speaker 2: else was the money.
- 25:54Speaker 1: There was nothing else here for you.
- 25:58Speaker 3: And dudes would say it. That's the other thing. That's what,
- 26:02Speaker 3: that's another thing people forget is guys like Ernie Els
- 26:05Speaker 3: would be like, we know when Tiger's playing and he's
- 26:08Speaker 3: playing well, we're all playing for second. Can you imagine
- 26:12Speaker 3: in any other sport, like going into a game? Listen, if,
- 26:17Speaker 3: if they're, if they got their B plus game, we
- 26:19Speaker 3: can't win.
- 26:23Speaker 2: The only thing similar to me is when Usain Bolt
- 26:26Speaker 2: won the hundred at the 2012 Olympics, the second one.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I've never seen people happier for second and third in
- 26:35Speaker 2: my life. They were celebrating like they won gold medals.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And those are sprinters.
- 26:40Speaker 3: But that's also because with probably 25 meters left, you
- 26:47Speaker 3: say looking around, smiling at people. Like, when's the last
- 26:50Speaker 3: time you seen second, third, fourth, and fifth? They on
- 26:54Speaker 3: the grind. And you got one dude who's like this. Hey, mama. Hey,
- 26:58Speaker 3: what's up, Uncle Tim? How you doing?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Brother, I just remember, I think in 2012, I think
- 27:07Speaker 2: Tyson Gay finished with like a 9.85.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Or something like that. Yeah. So what?
- 27:17Speaker 2: He left with his dick in his hand. There was
- 27:20Speaker 2: no medal for him. I think it was him. I
- 27:24Speaker 2: can't remember exactly who it was, but there was nothing for...
- 27:27Speaker 2: Fourth place was such an unreal score, and you weren't
- 27:31Speaker 2: even close.
- 27:35Speaker 3: It's hard to tell people that... Well, actually, no, it
- 27:39Speaker 3: might be easier. It might be easier to tell somebody...
- 27:43Speaker 3: You know, yo, I ran nine, eight, six.
- 27:45Speaker 1: You'd be like, oh, snap.
- 27:48Speaker 3: How much did you win by? Nah. Nah.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Man, it really wasn't about that. You know what I'm saying? Like,
- 27:55Speaker 2: it was about me. When I race, I race against myself.
- 27:59Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I don't even be thinking
- 28:01Speaker 1: about these other cats out here. Like, that's what you
- 28:03Speaker 1: got to say in golf, man. I just play the course, man.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Tiger did say, too, back in the day, like, he
- 28:07Speaker 3: had to make up games sometimes. That's what him and
- 28:11Speaker 3: Stevie would do. They would be like, okay, now I
- 28:16Speaker 3: hit this mark that I set for myself. Now what's
- 28:19Speaker 3: the next mark? Okay, now get to this number. All right.
- 28:22Speaker 3: And then once you get there, oh, I bet you
- 28:24Speaker 3: can't get to this number. And that's the game you're
- 28:27Speaker 3: playing because you're not playing against everybody else.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I forgot about old Stevie. Talk about messing up your
- 28:35Speaker 2: good thing, boy.
- 28:36Speaker 1: All right. I forgot about Stevie.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Did Stevie get up there and get a little bit
- 28:42Speaker 2: loose with the homies at that little banquet that one time?
- 28:46Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 3: That's when you learn that the internet is international. Yes.
- 28:54Speaker 3: You're at something in New Zealand. You're like, I can
- 28:56Speaker 3: just have some fun, drink a little bit, get a
- 28:59Speaker 3: little tipsy. say some fun things. And that was one
- 29:03Speaker 3: of those when everybody started realizing, oh, that stuff people
- 29:06Speaker 3: record on their phones gets out and it goes worldwide.
- 29:10Speaker 2: They always get loose at the crib, man. They always
- 29:12Speaker 2: wind up going back.
- 29:13Speaker 3: You think you're in a safe space.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Or don't let him be talking to a newspaper reporter
- 29:18Speaker 2: in the native language.
- 29:20Speaker 1: That's like when the boys go back to France. Like,
- 29:22Speaker 1: let me tell you something.
- 29:23Speaker 2: This offseason, that boy Victor going to go over to
- 29:26Speaker 2: France and say something crazy to Le Keep.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Or one of them other magazines they got over there.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Just you watch. Just you watch.
- 29:35Speaker 2: He ain't going to be able to help it. It's
- 29:37Speaker 2: like it's in the French interviews that when he says
- 29:39Speaker 2: stuff like, yeah, Rudy Gobert will never win defensive player
- 29:42Speaker 2: of the year again. Yo, man, like, we got Google
- 29:46Speaker 2: Translate now, homie.
- 29:47Speaker 3: We can find out. You ain't got nobody on your
- 29:51Speaker 3: team saying hold up. But see, here's– for me, I'm
- 29:55Speaker 3: a big fan of the flip side of that. It's like–
- 29:59Speaker 3: We don't get to attack people for doing stuff like that.
- 30:03Speaker 3: And then on the flip side, be like, I don't
- 30:05Speaker 3: understand why all these athletes are so vanilla with all
- 30:09Speaker 3: their answers. It's like, no, you say that, but then
- 30:13Speaker 3: you complain and bitch when a dude is honest and
- 30:16Speaker 3: says what he thinks. And it's like, how dare you
- 30:20Speaker 3: pick one, man, make up your damn mind.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Hey, man, we're going to come back.
- 30:27Speaker 2: We got more from the Tiger Slam with Michael Collins

- 31:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 31:53Speaker 2: We are back with Michael Collins. He got his master's gear.
- 31:55Speaker 2: I should have worn my master's visor. You know what
- 31:59Speaker 2: I'm saying? I got a couple of ball markers, too.
- 32:01Speaker 2: You know, when people go down there, they bring a
- 32:03Speaker 2: little something back for you, boy.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Bring a little something. Let me tell you. Do you
- 32:05Speaker 3: know what the like first timers are? Their average spend
- 32:12Speaker 3: is just under $ 2, 000.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Are you serious?
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah, big time. And I spend, when I have been
- 32:18Speaker 3: to the Masters, and I've been there 14 times, 13 times,
- 32:24Speaker 3: and I have never left Augusta National without dropping four
- 32:32Speaker 3: large games. But I know, like, I've talked to some
- 32:37Speaker 3: of the people that work there, and, like, they've told
- 32:39Speaker 3: me stories of people walking in spending 50, 50 Gs.
- 32:42Speaker 3: But then they're out selling all the stuff. Like, I
- 32:45Speaker 3: would never.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Yeah, nah, that don't feel right.
- 32:47Speaker 3: No, man, that's the thing. Like, now, the one thing
- 32:49Speaker 3: I do like to do is I, it's one of
- 32:51Speaker 3: the best things that you can do. Like you said,
- 32:53Speaker 3: with the stuff that you have, there is nothing that
- 32:55Speaker 3: is more meaningful to people that have never been there
- 32:59Speaker 3: than a gift from the master's.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Hey, man, let me tell you something. I'd be afraid
- 33:03Speaker 2: to go sell they stuff. That'd be like using Mickey
- 33:05Speaker 2: Mouse on your shit. Like, I'd be afraid they gonna
- 33:09Speaker 2: come find you.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And they ain't even.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I'm saying, like, this is... Nah, man. If you... Yeah, man.
- 33:16Speaker 3: It's just... Number one, it would feel slimy doing something
- 33:19Speaker 3: like that. So.
- 33:21Speaker 2: But, brother, even on top of that, they know people. Like,
- 33:24Speaker 2: if you think they can't get ice to bust your
- 33:26Speaker 2: door down, you crazy.
- 33:30Speaker 1: They know.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Right. Well, I will say there's... Augusta National is more
- 33:38Speaker 3: secretive than Fight Club.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:42Speaker 3: And the people that they're... The members that the names
- 33:46Speaker 3: of members you don't know, they're the ones that are like...
- 33:51Speaker 3: how they found out. Like, if somebody was doing something,
- 33:54Speaker 3: then not even, like, you just, you go to the
- 33:56Speaker 3: Masters and you buy $ 50, 000 worth of shirts and now
- 34:00Speaker 3: you put a Masters store up there and stuff like that.
- 34:03Speaker 3: And now, like, you and none of your family members
- 34:08Speaker 3: or anybody of your friends can ever get back to
- 34:11Speaker 3: the Masters tickets magically again. You never get back there. Like,
- 34:14Speaker 3: I wonder how that happened. Oh, there's, come on, man.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Come on.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Just try too hard.
- 34:20Speaker 3: But, Yeah, but some of the best gifts I ever
- 34:22Speaker 3: gave out, like, I hooked up one dude with a
- 34:26Speaker 3: Masters watch one time, and that was like, yeah, the
- 34:31Speaker 3: look on people's faces, you know? I had a dude
- 34:35Speaker 3: that was playing for my team, the Eagles, and he
- 34:37Speaker 3: was into watches. And then, so I surprised him one
- 34:41Speaker 3: time and was like, I'm going to give you something
- 34:45Speaker 3: that you can't get and you can show off that
- 34:47Speaker 3: all these other $ 300, 000 watches and quarter million dollar watches
- 34:51Speaker 3: and stuff like that. Anybody can buy them, but you
- 34:54Speaker 3: can't get this. And so being able to give people
- 34:58Speaker 3: stuff that they can't buy, bro, that's the greatest feeling
- 35:01Speaker 3: in the world. Watching people's face light up and stuff
- 35:04Speaker 3: like that. So yeah, I got probably, I got probably
- 35:10Speaker 3: 200 hats. I got a hat issue. my thing so
- 35:15Speaker 3: like for the years i've been going i got so
- 35:17Speaker 3: many hats and like of course now is the gnome
- 35:20Speaker 3: the gnome is the big thing.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Now yeah brother you got a hat issue because like
- 35:24Speaker 2: me you got a head issue you know what i'm.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Saying you know like and you'll.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Be out there playing like people don't understand like i
- 35:29Speaker 2: never quite got there into the ll zone you know
- 35:31Speaker 2: what i'm saying where it's just like hey you know
- 35:34Speaker 2: hats are gonna be my thing but we talk about
- 35:36Speaker 2: tiger woods saint andrews was 2000 for him And I
- 35:41Speaker 2: believe it's the first time he played St.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Andrews in the Open Championship.
- 35:44Speaker 2: And you correct me if I'm wrong, but this was
- 35:46Speaker 2: another course very much so made for Tiger Woods.
- 35:50Speaker 3: In a sense, he took all of the trouble out
- 35:55Speaker 3: of play. This was another. So, you know, this is
- 35:59Speaker 3: coming off of that U.S. Open win where he beat
- 36:02Speaker 3: the game.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Not only fulfilled by 15, and now he goes to
- 36:06Speaker 3: the Open Championship. Let's put this in perspective. He shot
- 36:11Speaker 3: minus 12 at the US Open and was like, everybody
- 36:16Speaker 3: was like, holy cow, this dude is like that. And
- 36:19Speaker 3: then he went to the Open Championship and shot minus 19,
- 36:23Speaker 3: almost shot minus 20, and beat the field by eight.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Yes.
- 36:28Speaker 3: At the old course.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Coming off 15, he is now one by eight.
- 36:34Speaker 3: This dude has won two major championships in the same season.
- 36:40Speaker 3: By 23 strokes combined.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 36:45Speaker 2: And Ernie L's Hall of Famer, I believe, was in
- 36:46Speaker 2: second place of both of those.
- 36:49Speaker 1: And he's the 23 behind guy.
- 36:52Speaker 3: He's 23 and me. Poor dude's 23 and me. Where
- 36:58Speaker 3: if Tiger's not playing, he's holding the two trophies. Like,
- 37:02Speaker 3: we're talking about an Ernie slam, potentially. So, yeah, that was...
- 37:08Speaker 3: That St. Andrews thing, like to do not only what
- 37:12Speaker 3: he did at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, at
- 37:15Speaker 3: Historic Place, now you go to literally the home of
- 37:20Speaker 3: golf itself.
- 37:21Speaker 2: St.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Andrews is the home of golf. And for most people
- 37:26Speaker 3: who've never played an Open Championship at St. Andrews, there
- 37:30Speaker 3: is a pretty good-sized learning curve. But Tiger was just
- 37:34Speaker 3: one of those guys who was in a place, and
- 37:36Speaker 3: this is also what happens. I can tell you this, too,
- 37:39Speaker 3: as a guy who's been fortunate enough to one or
- 37:43Speaker 3: two times get into those special moments with a player
- 37:48Speaker 3: where no matter what you do off the tee, the
- 37:54Speaker 3: number for the second shot is perfect. Like, there's nowhere
- 38:00Speaker 3: in between clubs. Like, what do you like here? Like,
- 38:03Speaker 3: it's no... You get there and you go 150. Pitching wedge? 150! Right.
- 38:12Speaker 3: And at the open, you're like, all right, 150 is
- 38:15Speaker 3: down pitching wedge downwind. Yep, perfect. Boom, hit the shot. Or, like,
- 38:19Speaker 3: you would... There were famous times where Stevie would just
- 38:24Speaker 3: be like at that target and Tiger would go, yeah.
- 38:27Speaker 3: And then as the ball came off of the club face,
- 38:30Speaker 3: he would be like that target right there. Right. Like
- 38:34Speaker 3: just cockily announcing to everybody, like you can't do that. Right.
- 38:41Speaker 3: And Stevie was the dude was like, yeah, that target.
- 38:44Speaker 3: And just boom, beat. Like it was. Watching. As a caddy,
- 38:50Speaker 3: watching those two work surgically like that was... It was
- 38:56Speaker 3: a dance, even at the Open, that I don't think
- 39:00Speaker 3: anyone had ever seen before like that. And it's coming
- 39:04Speaker 3: off the U.S. Open, and I think for the rest
- 39:08Speaker 3: of the field, that was the feeling of, hold him up.
- 39:12Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Like, you're already down like this,
- 39:16Speaker 3: and now.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Tiger and Stevie are grabbing him, like, hold him up. Like,
- 39:22Speaker 3: we ain't done knocking you. Like, yeah what do you do.
- 39:27Speaker 2: And those in those first three majors of the year
- 39:30Speaker 2: at that point this is when the pga was on
- 39:31Speaker 2: the back end of the schedule rather than being on
- 39:33Speaker 2: the front is analogous in tennis to you have hard
- 39:39Speaker 2: a hard court major a clay major, and a grass major.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Like these are three different types of golf that you
- 39:44Speaker 2: are playing, right? Like the Litz golf that is required
- 39:47Speaker 2: to play at the open is not the same. It's
- 39:50Speaker 2: not just like, oh, okay, you've been whooping ass everywhere.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Now you're going to come whoop ass here because that's
- 39:54Speaker 2: what you do. No, you have to play a different game.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Like was it at the open that year that Tiger
- 39:59Speaker 2: went out there without the driver and won in the
- 40:01Speaker 2: final round?
- 40:02Speaker 3: Oh, he had the driver in the bag and didn't
- 40:03Speaker 3: have to hit it.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what it was. Yeah.
- 40:05Speaker 2: But like it's these are these are different different games
- 40:09Speaker 2: that he has had to play.
- 40:10Speaker 1: And he just went and dominated U.S.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Open golf and then came behind it and dominated this
- 40:15Speaker 2: Lynx golf where you're playing with this crazy wind.
- 40:17Speaker 1: It's probably raining. All your shots need to stay low.
- 40:21Speaker 3: That's the key. So you made a great analogy there
- 40:24Speaker 3: with tennis. Right. When you're playing on the hard court,
- 40:27Speaker 3: it's a power game. When you're playing on the grass court,
- 40:30Speaker 3: it's a ground game. And same with the clay. When
- 40:33Speaker 3: you're playing on the clay, it's more of a precision
- 40:36Speaker 3: type of thing. Well, the US Open is all about precision.
- 40:40Speaker 3: You need to hit it here, and then you need
- 40:41Speaker 3: to hit it here. So you're playing to spots, and
- 40:44Speaker 3: you got to hit it really high and really soft,
- 40:46Speaker 3: and no one could do it like Tiger could do
- 40:48Speaker 3: it back then, especially with mid to long irons. So
- 40:51Speaker 3: now when you go to the Open Championship... Instead of
- 40:55Speaker 3: playing everything high, now you got to play everything low.
- 40:58Speaker 3: You're not landing anything on the green because it plays
- 41:01Speaker 3: so firm and so fast that if something hits the green,
- 41:03Speaker 3: it gone. Like she is running way back.
- 41:06Speaker 1: So you got greens at that level for people who
- 41:08Speaker 1: don't know are like putting in the kitchen.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Correct. And the fairways sometimes at open championships can be
- 41:14Speaker 3: faster than the greens. So you're landing a ball 20
- 41:17Speaker 3: to 30 yards short of the putting surface and then
- 41:21Speaker 3: hoping that it takes the mounds correctly. misses the bunkers
- 41:25Speaker 3: and gets on the putting surface. And so those two
- 41:29Speaker 3: style of games are, it's completely opposite. It's chocolate and vanilla.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Like it's not like, well, my game kind of fits
- 41:37Speaker 3: a little bit of both. No, it don't. You have
- 41:40Speaker 3: to play a completely different style of golf. And for
- 41:43Speaker 3: him to go over there and Tiger, like dominating like that,
- 41:46Speaker 3: winning by eight shots after playing a completely different style.
- 41:51Speaker 3: And you're talking about these things are that's, Four weeks apart.
- 41:55Speaker 3: It's a month. So it's not like I got plenty
- 41:58Speaker 3: of time to prepare and get ready. I'll take two months,
- 42:02Speaker 3: and I'm going to change up kind of how I
- 42:04Speaker 3: flight everything and what I need to do. Nah. You
- 42:08Speaker 3: got a month where you're taking time off, too, to chill,
- 42:13Speaker 3: and then you're going to just show up there, and
- 42:14Speaker 3: your game's going to be set and ready? Like, where
- 42:17Speaker 3: are you going... Where are you going to practice that
- 42:20Speaker 3: in the United States? Because nowhere in the U.S. can
- 42:23Speaker 3: you set up courses at the time to play like that.
- 42:27Speaker 3: Nowhere in the U.S. was like that. So him showing
- 42:31Speaker 3: up and doing that was another one where everybody was like, oh,
- 42:34Speaker 3: this dude doing this too?
- 42:39Speaker 1: And then he comes about hollering the PGA next.
- 42:41Speaker 2: And it's interesting, the PGA is the one in this
- 42:43Speaker 2: run that we talk about the least, but it's the
- 42:44Speaker 2: one that went to the playoff. And I remember very
- 42:47Speaker 2: clearly when this happened, something that was very interesting is
- 42:50Speaker 2: that he's in the playoff with this dude named Bob May.
- 42:52Speaker 2: That meant nothing to us, but Bob May was that
- 42:55Speaker 2: dude back in the day in California. Like that was
- 42:58Speaker 2: a guy that Young Tiger was like trying to keep up,
- 43:00Speaker 2: was trying to get to at a point. And good
- 43:03Speaker 2: for you, Bob May. You got to the playoff. Even
- 43:05Speaker 2: better for you that you lost. Because if you hadn't lost,
- 43:07Speaker 2: this would have just kind of been weirdo factoid, right?
- 43:10Speaker 2: But now Tiger's back-to-back champion at the PGA.
- 43:13Speaker 3: And the irony was, like, that was the greatest Cinderella
- 43:17Speaker 3: story at the time that we were seeing. And it
- 43:20Speaker 3: might have been a great Cinderella story if he won.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Yes.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Like, it would have been unheard of if he won.
- 43:28Speaker 3: But two things about that.
- 43:30Speaker 1: One.
- 43:31Speaker 3: If Bob May wins that playoff, then we don't get
- 43:35Speaker 3: to have any of the Tiger Slam conversations at all.
- 43:39Speaker 3: And maybe the Slam never happens the way that it happened.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Who knows? There's no way to Monday morning quarterback. And
- 43:49Speaker 3: fast forward then, Y.E. Yang at another PGA Championship doesn't
- 43:57Speaker 3: become Goff's Buster Douglas. Because Tiger never has then that
- 44:02Speaker 3: run where he is undefeated going into Sunday with the
- 44:06Speaker 3: lead of a major. There was no such thing as
- 44:09Speaker 3: that run. And then Y.E. Yang doesn't become Y.E. Yang.
- 44:14Speaker 3: And everything that happens after that also never potentially happens.
- 44:21Speaker 3: But at the time, Bob May even getting into that playoff,
- 44:26Speaker 3: who is this short dude who is... is 50 yards
- 44:32Speaker 3: behind Tiger off the tee, and yet hitting these long
- 44:36Speaker 3: irons against nine irons. Guys who's hitting it high and
- 44:41Speaker 3: soft against a dude who has to bring it in
- 44:44Speaker 3: low because he's using irons that are so much longer,
- 44:47Speaker 3: and he's further away than these greens than Tiger is,
- 44:51Speaker 3: and yet he's hanging with them. So there's that... You're
- 44:58Speaker 3: torn as a golf fan. Like, I love the fact
- 45:01Speaker 3: that Cinderella's got a chance to dance and like is
- 45:04Speaker 3: hanging with Tiger and hitting these crazy, amazing shots when
- 45:07Speaker 3: he's out of position and like giving himself an absolute
- 45:10Speaker 3: chance going into this playoff. And you're like, holy cow. Like,
- 45:15Speaker 3: is Tiger really? Is this going to happen? And then
- 45:18Speaker 3: once we learned that backstory of Bob May was like, oh.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Not only is this dude the short knocker, and you're like,
- 45:27Speaker 3: how is this happening? And you're like, oh, because this
- 45:29Speaker 3: is a dude who knows that Tiger used to look
- 45:33Speaker 3: up to him.
- 45:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:34Speaker 3: So he might not have the same fear, or he's
- 45:38Speaker 3: drawing off of something from the past that no one
- 45:41Speaker 3: else had to draw off of against King Kong.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Yeah, like there's nothing like when you're like, oh, are
- 45:48Speaker 1: you talking about insert name here?
- 45:50Speaker 2: Like a great example of this, the 1999 Final Four
- 45:54Speaker 2: when UConn beat Duke and Duke had this point guard
- 45:57Speaker 2: named William Avery. William Avery was cold. It didn't work
- 45:59Speaker 2: out in the NBA for him, but he was cold
- 46:01Speaker 2: in college. And he was from Augusta, Georgia. UConn had
- 46:05Speaker 2: a dude named Ricky Moore who was two years ahead
- 46:08Speaker 2: of Avery and was basically like Will Avery's big brother.
- 46:11Speaker 1: And he treated him like that. And the game went
- 46:13Speaker 1: like that.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Every now and then that happens where there's some dude
- 46:17Speaker 2: on the other side that's like, you're talking about who?
- 46:19Speaker 2: It's like when you went college and when you first
- 46:21Speaker 2: get to college and you see the dudes that are
- 46:23Speaker 2: in frats, you're like, oh, they must be somebody.
- 46:25Speaker 1: They in the frat. But then you get to be
- 46:27Speaker 1: a junior. And then the cats that were nobodies when
- 46:29Speaker 1: you were freshmen are now in the frat. And you're like, oh,
- 46:32Speaker 1: you're talking about him? Right? That's Bob May. Like, oh,
- 46:36Speaker 1: you talking about him? Like, yeah, no, no, he was good.
- 46:37Speaker 1: I mean, it was coming, but I can't see myself
- 46:40Speaker 1: being afraid of this cat. And he wasn't. Yes.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Yes. And that, you know, for some people too, you know,
- 46:46Speaker 3: you hear that saying, the moment's too big. But as
- 46:48Speaker 3: you said, for Bob May at the time, it was like, oh, Tiger?
- 46:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 3: I know if I get into, you know, if we
- 46:55Speaker 3: have a battle, I ain't scared. Like, I battled this
- 46:57Speaker 3: dude before. It ain't, Even though the mystique outside the
- 47:02Speaker 3: bubble of Tiger is there in the moment, you're like, huh?
- 47:05Speaker 3: But for everybody on the outside, like you said, with
- 47:07Speaker 3: Avery from when they're playing Duke and all of that,
- 47:11Speaker 3: everyone on the outside was like, yo, who is this
- 47:14Speaker 3: dude that thinks he's and they don't know the backstory.
- 47:17Speaker 3: So you're just like, yo, who does dude think he is?
- 47:20Speaker 3: Like showing up and showing out, you're like, this dude's
- 47:24Speaker 3: out of nowhere. When it's like, no, he's not. He's
- 47:26Speaker 3: kind of not out of nowhere. You just didn't know
- 47:28Speaker 3: the backstory.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know what? It was cute. Three hole playoff,
- 47:32Speaker 1: Tiger wins. It was cute. It was cute. It really was, man.
- 47:36Speaker 1: It added flavor to the story. You know what I'm saying?
- 47:40Speaker 1: Like it made for a very interesting part of this podcast, right?
- 47:42Speaker 1: People didn't see that part coming.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Okay.
- 47:45Speaker 1: We get to the 2001 Masters.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Keeping in mind, again, they've been messing with the course,
- 47:50Speaker 2: and Tiger has not won since the first time he
- 47:53Speaker 2: got there. Now we're here, and it's this idea of
- 47:56Speaker 2: a Tiger slam. And to me, yes, you hold all
- 47:58Speaker 2: the trophies at the same time, it's a slam.
- 48:00Speaker 3: We got to take a timeout and back up, though,
- 48:02Speaker 3: a little bit, too, in 2001. What did he do
- 48:05Speaker 3: going into that Masters as well? You have to remember...
- 48:10Speaker 3: He won the two tournaments that he played in right
- 48:14Speaker 3: before that. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and who'd
- 48:19Speaker 3: he beat there? Phil Mickelson.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Then he goes to the Players' Championship. Again, little bit
- 48:26Speaker 3: of a different style of golf that you got to
- 48:28Speaker 3: play at the Players' Championship. And who's he beat at
- 48:32Speaker 3: the Players' Championship? Vijay Singh. So this dude... is going
- 48:38Speaker 3: in to the Masters, which is his next event.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Checking the list.
- 48:42Speaker 3: Having beat Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, probably at the
- 48:46Speaker 3: time his two biggest rivals on the golf course. Like
- 48:50Speaker 3: two dudes that were definitely guys that were names you
- 48:55Speaker 3: better know where they are on the leaderboard. And he
- 48:59Speaker 3: took both of them down in the two events going
- 49:01Speaker 3: into the Masters. And then, oh yeah, like who wins three...
- 49:06Speaker 3: Starts in a row. And now you're throwing on top
- 49:09Speaker 3: of the fact the slam is on the line. Like
- 49:13Speaker 3: no one since Bobby Jones has won all four in
- 49:17Speaker 3: a row. So he's going for a three, a three.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Three straight wins, API players, and now he shows up
- 49:24Speaker 3: at the Masters. And the pressure, and this is like, 2001,
- 49:28Speaker 3: the media was no joke. This is not 96 or
- 49:32Speaker 3: 97 when there's like 50 news reports, 50 newspaper people there,
- 49:38Speaker 3: and seven TV people. This is a gaggle, and the
- 49:42Speaker 3: internet is full-blown.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and he.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Had to grind this one out, man. Like, he's down
- 49:48Speaker 2: five strokes at the end of the first round. He's
- 49:52Speaker 2: down two strokes at the end of the second. And
- 49:55Speaker 2: he's up one at the end of third. It's the
- 49:59Speaker 2: same as it ever was with Tiger and Augusta.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Just need a little time to get warm. Just need
- 50:03Speaker 1: a little time to get it cracking.
- 50:04Speaker 3: But Tiger's also that dude, too. Like, you think of
- 50:07Speaker 3: that first round, and you're like, man, he down five.
- 50:10Speaker 3: But everybody still, you know, in the back of every
- 50:14Speaker 3: golfer's head, too, that they're still doing this.
- 50:18Speaker 4: Yep. Yep.
- 50:19Speaker 3: You seen him? Have you seen him? Where he at?
- 50:22Speaker 3: Hold on.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Is he coming?
- 50:23Speaker 3: Is he coming? And so you're playing with that on
- 50:27Speaker 3: your shoulders against the dude who is like, now he's
- 50:31Speaker 3: looking at you from behind like, it's all right. I
- 50:35Speaker 3: just got to do what I got to do. And
- 50:36Speaker 3: then when that plod starts, I mean, this is that
- 50:41Speaker 3: Tiger Woods where if your name was at the top
- 50:44Speaker 3: of the leaderboard and his name was on a leaderboard
- 50:47Speaker 3: you could see, you started to get that sinking feeling
- 50:51Speaker 3: in your stomach. And when you were around, especially at Augusta,
- 50:56Speaker 3: because there's no electronic scoreboards. So everybody's sitting around there.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Two things happen. First is when you hear a roar
- 51:06Speaker 3: at Augusta, and even to this day, as many times
- 51:09Speaker 3: as I've been there, when Tiger's not playing, the Tiger
- 51:15Speaker 3: roar hits different. Like, there is a difference even between
- 51:24Speaker 3: a tiger roar and a hole-in-one roar, which a hole-in-one
- 51:28Speaker 3: roar is crazy. But when Tiger's making a move and
- 51:33Speaker 3: you're on a hole and he makes a birdie and
- 51:35Speaker 3: does a fist pump, because Augusta doesn't allow phones and everyone,
- 51:43Speaker 3: and this is the one other reason why I love Augusta,
- 51:46Speaker 3: everyone who's there at the Masters, has to be engaged
- 51:51Speaker 3: in the moment where you are. There's no checking, let
- 51:55Speaker 3: me see where somebody else is. There is getting, I
- 51:58Speaker 3: got an alert and something's going on outside even the
- 52:02Speaker 3: gates or even inside. There's no, you have to be
- 52:06Speaker 3: present in the moment of where you are. So when
- 52:10Speaker 3: Tiger does something and you're at that spot, the only
- 52:15Speaker 3: thing for you to do is be in that moment,
- 52:18Speaker 3: in that spot. So the explosion of emotion for the fans,
- 52:23Speaker 3: it still gives me goosebumps talking about.
- 52:27Speaker 2: It.
- 52:27Speaker 3: It only happens at Augusta. It only happens at the
- 52:31Speaker 3: Masters because of how they are.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Yeah, the presence in the moment.
- 52:37Speaker 3: It's why people at Augusta, you're not called a fan,
- 52:40Speaker 3: you're a patron.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 52:42Speaker 3: There's no such thing. You don't make that slip up
- 52:45Speaker 3: when you're on TV. The people that are there to
- 52:49Speaker 3: watch golf, they're patrons. Every other tournament, you got fans.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Augusta got patrons. And that's the historic nature of that place.
- 52:58Speaker 3: So when Tiger has a roar, if you're over on
- 53:01Speaker 3: a hole on the other side of the golf course,
- 53:04Speaker 3: the way that that sound comes through those pine trees,
- 53:08Speaker 3: and then, as I said, it's two things. The second
- 53:11Speaker 3: thing that happens is all of those scoreboards that are
- 53:15Speaker 3: not electronic, the score has to be changed manually. So
- 53:19Speaker 3: what happens is they have in that scoreboard, there's like
- 53:24Speaker 3: a long strip and where the name Woods will be
- 53:28Speaker 3: up there and the score will be up there. And
- 53:31Speaker 3: what happens is then the score itself. Let me see
- 53:33Speaker 3: if I can show the score. So this is the
- 53:36Speaker 3: card that has the score on it. The score will
- 53:39Speaker 3: be here, the thing will drop, and then the patrons
- 53:43Speaker 3: will only see a blank space, so you know something's coming.
- 53:47Speaker 3: And then, boop, when it pops up with the new score,
- 53:51Speaker 3: whether it's a birdie or an eagle, the crowd in
- 53:55Speaker 3: that space, then you'll hear, whoa! And so, Tiger... was
- 54:03Speaker 3: controlling the crowds around the Masters, not just on the
- 54:10Speaker 3: holes he was on, but on all the holes that
- 54:14Speaker 3: had those manual scoreboards because as soon as they flipped
- 54:18Speaker 3: and put that new score up and you see his name,
- 54:20Speaker 3: now they got to move Woods up. Now they got
- 54:22Speaker 3: to put the new score. And it was, oh! And
- 54:25Speaker 3: if you're a dude, like you're getting ready to hit
- 54:28Speaker 3: a putt, like just save par. And now... You're getting
- 54:33Speaker 3: ready to stand over it and quack, quack. You just
- 54:36Speaker 3: backed off. You got no chance of making that putt. None.
- 54:40Speaker 2: And look, he comes out of that third round. He's
- 54:43Speaker 2: up one stroke on Phil Mickelson. So that's the pairing, right?
- 54:46Speaker 2: It's Tiger and Phil coming down the end of this.
- 54:49Speaker 2: And you look at the top 10. at the end
- 54:51Speaker 2: of the third round of that tournament, and it's a
- 54:53Speaker 2: bunch of dudes who won major championships.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Mark Alcavecchia, Adel.
- 54:57Speaker 2: Cabrera, David Duvall, Ernie Els, Lee Jansen, Jose Maria Odetabal. Like,
- 55:02Speaker 2: it's a bunch of dudes. Rocco Mediate, who wound up
- 55:04Speaker 2: playing in that U.S. Open playoff in 2008 with Tiger. Like,
- 55:09Speaker 2: it's a bunch of dudes behind him going into this
- 55:12Speaker 2: final round.
- 55:13Speaker 3: It's names that everybody know. And yet, the two titans,
- 55:17Speaker 3: you know what it was on Sunday? Sunday... Everyone went
- 55:23Speaker 3: to church in the morning and just went, I just
- 55:25Speaker 3: want to say thank you. I just want to, I
- 55:28Speaker 3: know it's a lot of times that I ask for
- 55:31Speaker 3: things that you don't deliver on and I still got
- 55:33Speaker 3: to be thankful. But today I might put just a
- 55:38Speaker 3: little extra in the collection plate just because I know what's,
- 55:46Speaker 3: the two dudes that we always dream of seeing in
- 55:49Speaker 3: a major championship battle are about to do battle for
- 55:55Speaker 3: the green jacket. And we know what's on the line
- 55:58Speaker 3: for tiger.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 56:00Speaker 3: And so I don't know a time either. Like when,
- 56:07Speaker 3: other than, everyone has different specific moments. For you, it
- 56:10Speaker 3: was 1996. You're like, I don't even know why I
- 56:13Speaker 3: turned on the Masters in 1996, as you said when
- 56:16Speaker 3: you were watching. But I know, like, I was enthralled
- 56:19Speaker 3: by it. Like you said, you were enthralled by watching
- 56:22Speaker 3: the collapse of Greg Norman and how Nick Faldo ended
- 56:25Speaker 3: up winning. And it was just like, when you turned
- 56:27Speaker 3: it on, you were just like, I can't... It could
- 56:30Speaker 3: have been something crazy. You'd be like, oh, man, there's
- 56:32Speaker 3: a kitten in a tree. That kitten's in a tree
- 56:34Speaker 3: until this is over. Like, you're going to watch.
- 56:38Speaker 3: That 2001 Masters with that final group, I don't remember
- 56:45Speaker 3: a time when more people who had no interest in
- 56:49Speaker 3: golf whatsoever at the time sat down and watched it.
- 56:55Speaker 3: From the moment that that mug came on CBS, everybody
- 57:00Speaker 3: was like, we're watching this. I'm like, we're not even
- 57:04Speaker 3: into golf. I need to see this. And they was like,
- 57:09Speaker 3: what does birdie mean? It means you played the whole
- 57:12Speaker 3: one shot better than what you were supposed to. What
- 57:14Speaker 3: does bogey mean? Bogey means you played one shot worse.
- 57:17Speaker 3: Just watch, man.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Shut up.
- 57:20Speaker 3: There were people who were like, holy cow, there are
- 57:23Speaker 3: people watching golf that don't care about golf. And so...
- 57:31Speaker 3: I think it was an impactful Sunday in a way
- 57:35Speaker 3: that is hard to measure. Because then so many people
- 57:40Speaker 3: after the fact stuck around. And that's where I say
- 57:45Speaker 3: it's immeasurable. Because we know people watch golf every now
- 57:48Speaker 3: and then for major championships, especially the Masters. And then
- 57:52Speaker 3: the golf is gone. Maybe something crazy is happening. We'll
- 57:55Speaker 3: flip it on and watch it for a couple of
- 57:56Speaker 3: hours or something like that. But we're not emotionally invested
- 57:59Speaker 3: in the game. But I think at that 2000 Masters,
- 58:03Speaker 3: after the fact, people stayed and became emotionally invested in
- 58:09Speaker 3: golf where they had never been before.
- 58:14Speaker 2: And it's interesting because Tiger had three more years after
- 58:18Speaker 2: this where he won multiple majors. There's the 2008 playoff
- 58:22Speaker 2: where he's playing on the broken leg. There is his
- 58:24Speaker 2: 2019 Masters, which is his analog to the Jack Nicklaus, uh,
- 58:29Speaker 2: 1986 masters, right? Like the one, one more for you go, right?
- 58:32Speaker 2: Like you went ahead and got that one, but it was, it,
- 58:36Speaker 2: it never felt quite the same as it did that year.
- 58:39Speaker 2: He was still Tiger Woods after that, right? Like the,
- 58:42Speaker 2: the magnitude. And I would be inclined to say he
- 58:45Speaker 2: became a better golfer after that. Like, I don't think
- 58:47Speaker 2: he got worse after 2000. Well, you have to remember.
- 58:50Speaker 3: Too, like he also, after 2000, then, After 2001, he
- 58:56Speaker 3: changed his swing again. Remember, it was after 2001. That's
- 59:02Speaker 3: when he also then, him and Butch split. And that's
- 59:06Speaker 3: when Hank Haney came in. And so, like... when he
- 59:10Speaker 3: went into another dominant phase in 2006 and 2007, that was...
- 59:15Speaker 3: Haney was his swing coach then. And it was another
- 59:18Speaker 3: period where everybody was like, holy cow, this dude completely
- 59:21Speaker 3: changed his swing again and started dominating. Now, was it
- 59:23Speaker 3: the same feel as 2000, 2001?
- 59:25Speaker 4: No.
- 59:25Speaker 1: No.
- 59:25Speaker 3: And here's... And you know this too, man, because me
- 59:33Speaker 3: and you have had this conversation before. And you've seen
- 59:36Speaker 3: me have conversations with people like this as recently as
- 59:42Speaker 3: five years ago. When people were like, hey, man, you
- 59:46Speaker 3: think Tiger's coming back? Like, is Tiger going to be back?
- 59:51Speaker 3: Having to tell people that went through that time in
- 59:54Speaker 3: 2000 and 2001, hey, man. that dude is not, he gone.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: It's hard to make people believe that dude, he don't
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: exist anymore.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: It's like what people talk about is the U back. Like,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: do you know what the U was?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Right? Is Florida State back? Top five, 14 years in
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: a row? I don't know if I can say that.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: Yeah. And it is too, like, And I don't, and
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: I'm not saying this as a shot, but like, so
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: Bobby Jones wins all, he wins the Grand Slam and
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: then walks away from golf. And like, we have a
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: couple of guys who are dominant and like in flashes
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: and moments and stuff, but then Nicholas comes along and
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: Bobby Jones says about Jack Nicholas, he plays a game
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: with which I'm not familiar, right? And now we see
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Nicholas take the mantle of, He's the dude who everybody
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: thinks is like, when he's at his best, I can't
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: beat him. Right? And there'll never be another Jack Nicklaus
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: until Tiger comes along. And Jack then has to say
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: the same thing about Tiger. He plays a game with
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: which I'm not familiar. And now we see Tiger have
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: that time where everyone in golf says, he plays a
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: game with which I'm not familiar. And when he's at
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: his best, knowing I can't beat him, right? We are
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: now in a period where Tiger is still around. And
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: it's like Jack after 1986, right? He was still around.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Like he had that flash in 1986 when he won
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: the Masters, right? Where it was like, this dude kind
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: of came out of nowhere and had that flash where
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: it was like, and we saw the last time Tiger
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: won the Masters was like, there was that same type
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: of moment. But because we lived through 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007,
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: where like, you think he can still do it again?
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: And it's like, I would love to be the guy,
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: give you hope. I would love to give you hope.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: But the dudes that are out there now are playing
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: a game that Tiger doesn't play. Yeah.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: And people also misunderstood this, the idea that you can
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: play golf forever.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: You can play golf forever.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: But it is still, it's either a young, it's a
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: young man's game and it's a middle-aged game, but only
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: two guys have truly been great, both young and middle-aged.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Jack Nichols and Gary Player, the only two guys to
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: win multiple majors on both sides of 35. Because remember,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: the car accident is in 2009. He turns 35 in
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: December of 2010. The odds were always against him on
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: that backside. That's before we even get into all the
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: physical wear and tear of that he had endured.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: But I think, what was it? Tom Watson won 11
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: majors by 33. Right. Never won another. this happens.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: Like Sam Snead, Phil Mickelson, examples of guys who won
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: all those majors after 35. Like, it's really hard to
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: be excellent at that game for a really long time.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: It's Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, for people who don't know,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: he's like goddamn Jack LaLanne, right? Out there doing all
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: the push-ups and sit-ups and all of that stuff. Like,
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: he's a physical, like, he's an unreal physical specimen in
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: terms of longevity.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: And if we're being honest, too, when it comes to
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Gary Player, like, he's like Jack LaLanne. You're like, oh, shit,
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: here come crazy.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: There he is.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: I love the depth. This is going to be off
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: the rails. Here come crazy.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Don't answer too many questions about South African politics. You
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: never know what you might get.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Don't ask politics, period. Don't ask politics, man. We all
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: getting canceled. Don't ask no politics.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: But no, but we had that run with Tiger and
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: we all were like, well, he's going to pass Jack Nicklaus,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: not quite understanding what the arc was and how a
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: golf career actually progresses. But for me, it's one of
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: those where it's like, Maybe it's because I wasn't as
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: invested in golf, or maybe it doesn't matter to me
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: that he did not get to 19 majors. It doesn't
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: matter to me that he didn't get to 15 majors.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I was there for what it was. Yes.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: And even the.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: People who were there for what it was with Jack Nicklaus,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: it wasn't that.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Like, they're not even saying it was that.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: Well, the thing, too, is, like, everyone, including Jack Nicklaus,
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: way back in the day, like, after this 2000, 2001,
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: Jack Nicklaus... said, Tiger's going to beat my major record
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: and he should do it pretty easily as long as.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: And the as long as with everyone out there was
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: he stays healthy. I mean, and Tiger's not the only...
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: You can go wait. If we do a football analogy,
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: like what would Gale Sayers have been? I never saw
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Gale Sayers. All I seen was highlights. But it was
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: like the dude who I know growing up who was
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: going to be the great. What would Bo Jackson have done?
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: That's the greatest comparison that you can make. Because everyone
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: looked and was like, oh, this is a breed of
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: athlete we don't know. We haven't seen. And so for him, too.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: to be now when you look at tiger and you're like, if,
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: if he would have stayed healthy. And so for everyone else,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: you look at where you like, you know, there are
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: sometimes you look at and be like, we got to,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: what do the numbers tell you? Sometimes that's a great thing,
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: but there are other times it's like, yeah, the numbers
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: can tell you something, but also the people that were
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: there in the moment with him, and then the greats
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: of the past that are still around and saw it
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: as well and went, yeah, that dude, better.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: And it's... I hope people understand that it's easy for
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: us who aren't athletes at that level or anyone at
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: levels like that. It is not easy to.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: Humble yourself. It's not easy to say, I was the best.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: And now someone's better than me. Right? Like, you don't
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: want to, it's hard to give that title up because
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: you understood what it took to get there and be there.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: And so to be able to look at another athlete
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: in the same sport and say, yeah, that dude had
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: some skills that I didn't possess. It's not easy to do.
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: So when, yes, Tiger's not catching Jack's record or breaking
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: that record, but is he the greatest golfer of all time?
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: It's going to be hard to say that dude's not
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: the GOAT. Like, I don't know someone who says, you know,
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: Jack was better than Tiger. And it's the comparison, too.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: It's like, well, Jack played against more Hall of Famers.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: We'll see. We'll see. And I love Jack to death.
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: I love him to death. I love Tiger to death
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: and stuff like that. But if you put me in
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: a room and strap me to a chair and there
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: was some torture devices around, I'm going to say Tiger
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: is the GOAT. He's the Billy GOAT. Jack is close.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: He's up there too. Jack's a GOAT. Is he the
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: GOAT that got the biggest horns and stands on the
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: top of the bridge? nah he stands just back from
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: the bridge and he's looking at it like you know
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: that used to be my bridge remember.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: That ladies and gentlemen that is michael collins check him
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: out at espn covering golf my man will have to
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: do it again brother thank you so much.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: It's been too long man i i have so much
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: enjoyment getting to chat with you brother and like watching
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: you do your thing is like It warms my heart
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: and my soul, bro. I love it, man. I know
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: you don't know this, but you inspire me, man. And
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: thank you for that, bro.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Dude, I appreciate you, man. Thank you so much. And
