- 0:00We're back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show. This is the first of Yukon
- 0:04Coaches Show triple header tonight. Bob Joyce and Genoa Rim will be talking about
- 0:09Yukon Women's hoop at seven, then I'll join Dan Hurley at eight. I'm
- 0:13doing double duty here coach for the men's basketball show. It's all tonight on
- 0:17the Yukon Sports networking online via the Varsity Network app and the Varsity Network dot
- 0:22Com. I quick thought before I forget this, you're talking about finding players.
- 0:28The running back who played quite a bit the other day for JM you
- 0:30Tyson Lawton war number seven, Redschert Senior, came from Stony Brook. I
- 0:35mean, that's not what you think of as a big time college. But
- 0:39he was a very effective runner. I thought for them the other day.
- 0:42Well, he's been a really good runner for them all year. He's a
- 0:45good player. And I think, you know, you good players come from
- 0:50everywhere, and players developed at different times. You know, this might be
- 0:53a young man that coming out of high school. You know, he hadn't
- 0:57developed. And I don't know because I don't remember him coming out of high
- 0:59school. Obviously, I wasn't you know, coaching, but he may have
- 1:02been a guy that you know, was a little bit undersized or you know,
- 1:06he didn't quite have the speed the physical makeup at that time. But
- 1:08then he he went to Stonybrook and he took an opportunity, took a chance,
- 1:12and he developed, you know, and he had good coaching, and
- 1:15then he had a chance to go to a school like Marshall, you know,
- 1:19a pretty prominent football program, and he took advantage of it. That's
- 1:23why when you're evaluating players, you can never discount where they come from.
- 1:29There's good players everywhere, but your evaluation has to be correct, you know,
- 1:34you have to know why they where they are, where they were or
- 1:38where they are before you bring them up. And you got to do a
- 1:40really good job of evaluating them. But to discount kids from FCS schools or
- 1:46IVY schools, you know, I think it's a mistake. You got to
- 1:48look at them and you got to make your own determination because they develop at
- 1:53different times in their life. Yeah, we see a lot of that in
- 1:56basketball. And actually there's a couple of IVY guys who went to Penn and
- 2:00another school here playing for Saint John's now and very good players, and you'd
- 2:05say, well, they're in the IVY League, but it doesn't matter.
- 2:07These guys can play in their sport. Quick thought, though, I want
- 2:10to ask you about the speed aspect of this game. Their white outs had
- 2:15a bundle of catches the other day Phoenix Sprolls, Reggie Brown, Elijah Surat.
- 2:21How much of that was speed in the ability for them to get open,
- 2:24because it seemed like it was a quality that was awesome if you're a
- 2:30JMU fan. They had really good receivers. They're big, fast, physical,
- 2:35and sure handed, and that's what you want on your football team.
- 2:38Guys that can separate versus man, they can get off the press and get
- 2:44down the field, and then guys that ultimately are going to catch it in
- 2:46tight windows. And they had we knew going in they had a really good
- 2:50receiving core. They're not a bunch of household names, but they're really really
- 2:53good football players. And as we go forward here, you know, we've
- 2:58got some young guys in our program that we think have those traits that we're
- 3:01trying to develop. I think, you know, the last two games,
- 3:06you've gotten to see Zach Growdy play. Zach is a you know, he's
- 3:08a red, he's a he's a true freshman out of Florida, a guy
- 3:13that you know over on the defensive scout team was doing a really good job
- 3:15and so we've moved him into the rotation. He's got some plays and he's
- 3:19got some of those traits, so we're trying to get him a little work.
- 3:22Kylie's Hicks has those traits. We're getting him a lot more work.
- 3:27But you need you need, you know, uh, you need guys that
- 3:31can They can they can beat bump and run, they can separate versus tight
- 3:36man coverage. They can you know, uh, get yards after the catch
- 3:39versus zone break tackles. And number one, you know, sure handedness.
- 3:44And you know, we had a guy having a hell of a game the
- 3:46other day, Cam ross Right, who really the last couple of weeks has
- 3:51kind of come on and uh, as you talked about a guy that's overcome
- 3:53a lot, my goodness, has he overcome a lot. So there's some
- 3:58promise here. But we're gonna go out once again and we're going to scour
- 4:00the portal. I've probably looked at thirty receivers at the junior college at the
- 4:04portal level that you know, we're evaluating and we're going to be very aggressive
- 4:10in that in that that window because we need to be able to stretch the
- 4:14field vertically and horizontally. That'll help our run game and I'll help everyone else
- 4:17get open. Yeah, no question about how do you have an update on
- 4:21Cam because he got whacked pretty hard on a targeting hit right on the sideline
- 4:28where the JMU bench was. How's he feeling. Do you have a sense
- 4:30of where he will be and by Saturday? Yeah, you know what,
- 4:34he he took a shot. You know, we never minimize those. Obviously,
- 4:40it's so critical that you take him seriously. But fortunately he recovered very
- 4:45quickly on the sideline. He felt better after the game. He felt really
- 4:49good today. There's a there's a very strict concussion protocol that you have to
- 4:58go through that is independent of certainly the coaches and our training staff and doctors
- 5:03that administer it. And they've told me that he's made great progress and we
- 5:08think that he'll be able to do some things at practice tomorrow and if everything
- 5:12goes according to plan, and he'll be cleared for Saturday. And it's just
- 5:17you know, really I hope he can play and I feel so confident that
- 5:23if he is able to play, that he's safe to play because the protocol
- 5:26place is being followed to a t. Yeah, you got to do that
- 5:30every week, Jim more with us of course, Mike Crispino here, we
- 5:33have a little fun with this. It's not really funny, but sometimes it
- 5:36is. A play happens, an official miss is a call, a flag
- 5:41doesn't come out. This week, they scored a touchdown on an eighty yard
- 5:46reception on a play that you thought that there was an illegal formation. I
- 5:50know you were upset. I could see you on the sideline and you got
- 5:55the attention of the official so much so that he eventually throw a flag on
- 5:59you. I'm not being trivial here because it's all important, trust me.
- 6:03But that was something that you know, it kind of broke the game open
- 6:09a little bit when they scored from eighty yards on one play. Yeah,
- 6:13so I'll tell you what happened. So they came out in an unbalanced formation,
- 6:16and college football has some crazy rules about formations and unbalanced stuff that I'm
- 6:23not used to even after eight years, because I think they're insane rules.
- 6:28So they came out an unbalanced formation. You have to figure out who's eligible.
- 6:31And initially the number two guy was covered up by number one, so
- 6:35he was ineligible. And at last moment, the number one guy kind of
- 6:39stepped off about six inches to create a little blade of grass as they call
- 6:43it, so number two became eligible, and he ran the post and got
- 6:46the touchdown. And I looked and saw them ineligible. Then I looked at
- 6:50our alignment, didn't see the guy step off, so technically I was wrong,
- 6:56and it was a legal formation. I didn't see this legal formation gets.
- 7:00I don't like the unbalanced rules in college football, but no one cares
- 7:04what I like, so it doesn't matter. I abide by him. I
- 7:08know. I was upset, you know, and I'm going to stick up
- 7:10with my team, and that's a tight game. And I wanted an answer
- 7:15and they weren't give me an answer. And I wanted an answer, and
- 7:17they wouldn't give me an answer. I just kept going, and then at
- 7:21something at a certain point, it's like, well, I might as well
- 7:24just keep going because it doesn't matter. They're in the end zone. I'll
- 7:27take a fifteen yard penalty right here to keep our team fired up or show
- 7:30them that, you know, I got some dang fire on my belly because
- 7:34all they're going to do is kick it off from the fifty, which means
- 7:36they're going to kick it out of the end zone or pooch kick it.
- 7:39We're getting on the twenty five yard line, so I knew it was a
- 7:42harmless Now, I still didn't think I should have got called for a penalty
- 7:46because the guy that called it wasn't even near the discussion. He couldn't even
- 7:49hear what we were talking about. But I did. I've in my career,
- 7:55I've had I've been flagged four times, and every one of them I've
- 8:00known I was going to get flagged. And well, no, the one
- 8:03against Marshall last year, didn't know I was going to get flagged. Three
- 8:05of them knew I was going to get flagged, and they were predetermined by
- 8:07me that Okay, I can get flagged here and it'll be okay. But
- 8:11you've got to make a statement for your team at times. Now, I'm
- 8:15with you. It's kind of like basketball coaches getting the tee. They just
- 8:18get them on purpose. Sometimes I want that bench to get fired up and
- 8:20get into the game one hundred and twenty percent. All right, we'll be
- 8:24back with Jim Moore, will wrap up with him. We got Isaiah Davis
- 8:28coming up, Lou Hanson as well, as we continue on the Yukon Football
- 8:31Coaches Show here on Learfield
