- 0:44del portale. Siamo con il direttore Massimo Lualdi
- 0:47che introduce l 'argomento odierno. Di cosa parliamo
- 0:50oggi?
- 1:05acque cristalline. surrounded by green, was the
- 1:08object, and this is incredibly little known,
- 1:10in 1969, near the landing of the first man on
- 1:14the Moon, of a visionary scientific experiment
- 1:17called Operation Atlantis, conducted in the middle
- 1:20of the Cold War, under the supervision of politics
- 1:23and the military. There we did a first geographical
- 1:27research on the site, with immersions on the
- 1:30site, when there was still nothing. Then, after
- 1:33having recovered some containers that came to
- 1:35make Then, as it is now, the escalation of the
- 1:46conflict between the USA and the USSR was feared
- 1:49in the direction of a nuclear conflict. The fears
- 1:52linked to coup scenarios led to evaluate the
- 1:55bizarre possibility of testing life in a underwater
- 1:58city. So Luciano Meccarozzi, a politically -led
- 2:01journalist on the right, who seven years later
- 2:03would have become famous for having Three subacqueous
- 2:33containers, four actually, because... One contained
- 2:34the machines to breathe, in the sense that they
- 2:37were compressors that took the air from the surface
- 2:40and then distributed it to the other three containers
- 2:43where we were. The Atlantis operation, presented
- 2:46in January 1969, was based on the construction
- 2:50of the first underwater city in the world, of
- 2:52special containers and habitats that will allow
- 2:55underwater life at an undetermined time to a
- 2:57group of 12 divers. The target was to test in
- 3:01a structured environment the possibility of being
- 3:03human beings would have been able to carry out
- 3:05subacqueous works living underwater for several
- 3:07days, beating the times for the phases of compression
- 3:10and decompression during immersion and immersion.
- 3:14We were four containers, I remember mine was
- 3:17called the cometopo because it was Colucci, Menegozzi,
- 3:20Tolloi and Polese. Polese was the only girl,
- 3:24Silvana Polese, who was part of the group. For
- 3:27his operation in Atlantis, Mecarozzi obtained
- 3:29from the region of Friuli, Venice and Giulia
- 3:31a contribution of 20 million and the support
- 3:34of some sponsors, even if the majority of the
- 3:36funds needed were collected thanks to the self
- 3:39-taxing of the participants, in large part already
- 3:41members of the Centro Italiano Soccorso Grotte.
- 3:44The 12 somozzatori called to participate in the
- 3:46experiment were called Aquanauti, not supernamed,
- 3:50in the documents they are just defined as such.
- 3:57some influx, it was the time of stay behind,
- 4:00or even that there was something behind, but
- 4:03in fact it was officially born as a private thing,
- 4:06a private initiative. The experimentation team
- 4:08had to live for long periods within five cylindrical
- 4:12modules with curious names such as Canetopo,
- 4:14Alpha Tau and Drago II, specifically designed
- 4:17for life at the bottom of the lake, at the same
- 4:19time carrying out manual work to test the physical
- 4:21parameters. The cylinders were held at a stable
- 4:24depth, linked to steel cables and containers
- 4:27made by Zavorra. We were underwater for about
- 4:30a month, day more, day less. I remember that
- 4:33to get out we spent hours decompressing, we changed
- 4:37the bubbles. Outside there were already the storage
- 4:40chambers and we spent an hour also inside there,
- 4:43because there were no measurements that time,
- 4:45there was no one who had been underwater for
- 4:48a month, so we came out a bit calculating, making
- 4:52calculations, but above all ... Each housing
- 4:57module was equipped with a device to communicate
- 4:59with the land through national telephone lines
- 5:02and a closed -circuit camera system for monitoring
- 5:05personnel. The Atlantis operation, apparently
- 5:07of high scientific elevation, was actually conducted
- 5:10with great proximity. To begin with, a minor,
- 5:15a 17 -year -old girl and a hitchhiker were part
- 5:17of the group, recruited by chance. While one
- 5:19of the firefighters, it was later known, was
- 5:21used to sleep with a side knife, perhaps to protect
- 5:24himself from ... the spirits with whom he declared
- 5:26to speak during the periods of immersion in the
- 5:29modules. I don't say pleasant, because there
- 5:31was a certain concern, but we weren't even too
- 5:35worried, it was fine, we even had to read. Not
- 5:39only, in the exits on the bottom of the lake,
- 5:42the aquanauts, with the privilege of any safety
- 5:44norm, frequently collected some of the numerous
- 5:47bombs in explosions of the Second World War,
- 5:50which lay on the bottom of the lake, bringing
- 5:52them to the surface where they were made. The
- 5:54Atlantis operation was divided into two phases
- 5:58over two and a half years. The first, from the
- 6:00summer of 1969, on August 3, was officially presented
- 6:04to civil, military and religious authorities,
- 6:06and the second in the course of 1971. The high
- 6:09scientific superficiality with which the experiment
- 6:12was conducted cataloged it among studies of little
- 6:14relevance and marginal validity. Yet the idea
- 6:18was suggestive, to build a underwater city on
- 6:21the model of that in vogue in the 50s. I had
- 6:27the impression that it was considered by us a
- 6:30kind of goliard. Today, on the lake of Cavazzo,
- 6:36no traces of the Atlantis operation have remained,
- 6:38at least in evidence, because under the cylinders
- 6:41there are still some. Thank you to the director
