- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37In your life and mine, the things that we've done or
- 0:41situations where we shared our faith that it's just been a
- 0:43complete bust is never in vain because the Lord promises His
- 0:48Word won't return void if people laugh at you or scoff at you or
- 0:52reject you or ridicule you because of what it is you
- 0:56believe and what you're committed to in your life.
- 0:59We should just trust God in that.
- 1:01Even though it didn't work out, we wish it would work out
- 1:03better, right? But sometimes it doesn't, and
- 1:07that's the mystery of life. If you ever woken up and thought
- 1:10to yourself, today is going to be a great day, and then
- 1:13everything went wrong, what a disappointment.
- 1:17When you start your day feeling like you're on top of the world
- 1:20and then experience Murphy's Law, whatever can go wrong will
- 1:24go wrong. Pastor Clark relates to you in
- 1:26his message today that even when sharing Jesus with others seems
- 1:30to go wrong, God is still pleased.
- 1:34You may not start a revival, but when you're faithful to plant
- 1:38that seed of faith, God will use it.
- 1:41Now. Here's Pastor Clark in Acts
- 1:43Chapter 23 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:48Paul says to him, God will strike you, you whitewashed wall
- 1:52for you sit to judge me according to the law and do not
- 1:55command me to be struck contrary to the law.
- 1:58So that wasn't a good way to start out when friends and
- 2:00influence people in a conversation before the
- 2:03authorities, right? He's antagonizing this high
- 2:06priest and everything he said is obviously true.
- 2:09But Paul responded out of an emotion that made him angry.
- 2:15Now, Jesus, whenever he was hit on the mouth, he didn't respond
- 2:19this way. Matter of fact, Jesus didn't
- 2:21open his mouth most of the time whenever he was being harassed,
- 2:25something we can learn from. But Paul not being God,
- 2:28obviously, and neither are we. When we get in a situation we
- 2:32don't like and we think it's unfair, we're going to fight to
- 2:35the end to prove that we're innocent.
- 2:37And Paul wasn't going to take any guff from these people or
- 2:41from this high priest. And so he basically says
- 2:44something to him that he's a hypocrite.
- 2:47Now, when I was in Israel and I saw the tombs and I was on the
- 2:50Mount of Olives and looking down, I remember Jesus talking
- 2:54about the Pharisees being like whitewashed sefolickers.
- 2:57In other words, the tombs, they look really clean and beautiful
- 3:01on the outside, but inside they were full of dead man's bones
- 3:04and corruption. And I'll never forget that.
- 3:06When I looked down and saw that, it just, you know, resonated and
- 3:10reminded me of that because they look beautiful, but inside they
- 3:13were just full of nothing but broken lives and dust and souls
- 3:17that will unfortunately be on their way to a Christ less
- 3:21eternity in hell because they never believed that Jesus was a
- 3:23Christ. But what's happening here is
- 3:27that Paul is tying him into this dead religion and this false
- 3:33leadership he had that he's contrary and he's judging
- 3:38unrighteously now. This guy eventually was caught
- 3:41up couple years later before Rome was sacked and the Jewish
- 3:46people had to scatter. But the Jewish people did find
- 3:49this guy and eventually assassinate him.
- 3:52So eventually he was judged for his crime of godless leadership
- 3:57in government. And it says in verse 4, and
- 3:59those who stood by said, do you revile God's high priest?
- 4:03So first of all, this was an impromptu meeting.
- 4:06And so there wasn't any kind of regalia and robes and all that
- 4:09kind of stuff. And him sitting on a throne like
- 4:11some big shot, he came in, sat there talking and listening and
- 4:15Paul wasn't even aware that the high priest was there.
- 4:18And this is interesting. In verse 5, Paul says, I did not
- 4:21know, brethren, that he was the high priest.
- 4:24For it is written, you should not speak evil of a ruler of
- 4:27your people. So regardless of what Paul
- 4:30thought about this man's leadership and his call and his
- 4:34ability to lead the people at this time, then like him,
- 4:39hypocrite, scoundrel, Pagan, all the different names you could
- 4:43put on him, he knew the scripture said you're not to
- 4:47speak evil of a ruler of your people.
- 4:49Now, I wonder how many pleasant things you or I have thought or
- 4:53said about Joe Biden lately. He's making a lot of crazy
- 5:00moves, isn't he? Yet he's the president of our
- 5:02country. He was elected.
- 5:06Whether you think he was elected fairly or unfairly, it's not the
- 5:09point. The point is God has appointed
- 5:11him to be the president right now, and I don't like it any
- 5:14more than anybody else, but he's our president, so I'm convicted.
- 5:19Like, do I pray for him? I'm commanded to pray for those
- 5:23who are in authority that the Lord would work in his heart,
- 5:27that he would cause him to come to some kind of reasoning in his
- 5:29mind to realize that the legislation that he's making is
- 5:33causing us not to be 1 nation under God anymore, but one
- 5:37nation under humanism and this immorality and this disgusting
- 5:43agendas. Every time we turn around some
- 5:45kind of new things coming down. So we're not.
- 5:49We have to be real careful, all of us.
- 5:51And I'm telling you about myself, doesn't matter who's in
- 5:55office or who you like, who you don't like, you need to pray for
- 5:58those who are in office. That's our responsibility as
- 6:00Christians and we need to do that.
- 6:03And maybe if we began to do that, maybe there would be some
- 6:06changes in our nation because that man needs God's mercy, just
- 6:11like you and I do. And there was times in our lives
- 6:14that we probably were worse than the way Joe Biden acts or lives
- 6:18perhaps. But this is a very clear
- 6:22statement that Paul said you shall not speak evil of the
- 6:25ruler of your people. In verse 6 it says, but when
- 6:31Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and other
- 6:36Pharisees, he cried out in the council of men and brethren, I'm
- 6:39a Pharisee. He was proud to say that he was
- 6:43a Pharisee. He was a son of a Pharisee.
- 6:45Concerning the hope of the resurrection and dead, I'm being
- 6:48judged. So all Paul's wanting people to
- 6:50know is that Christ rose again from the dead.
- 6:53Amen. But Paul's whole focus was to
- 6:56let these people know the good news that there's life after
- 6:58death, there's forgiveness of our sins, and that we can
- 7:02believe on Christ as our Messiah and have the promise of
- 7:05everlasting life and never die. That's good news, right?
- 7:09And they're wanting to silence Him.
- 7:11Now what's interesting here is that when He said that the
- 7:15dissension began to occur in verse 7.
- 7:17And when He said this, the dissension arose between the
- 7:19Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
- 7:23Now He wasn't intentionally trying to cause some kind of
- 7:25uproar, but He was just stating a case relating to what His past
- 7:30was and the need for them to understand that there is a
- 7:34resurrection. Well, the Pharisees were wow,
- 7:37Amen. That's what we believe that too.
- 7:39But the Sadducees in verse 8 say there is no resurrection and no
- 7:44Angel or spirit, but the Pharisees confess or believe
- 7:48both. Then there arose a lot outcry
- 7:50and the scribes in the Pharisees party arose in protest and
- 7:53saying we find no evil in this man.
- 7:56So now the Pharisees are supporting Paul.
- 7:58There's really no crime he's committed.
- 8:00There's no reason for him to be in chains or to be smacked
- 8:04around or to be persecuted right now.
- 8:06Absolutely none. And they're admitting there is
- 8:09no evil in him, and so let's let it go.
- 8:15If an Angel or spirit had spoken to him and gave him this other
- 8:18revelation, they're saying let us not fight against God.
- 8:22So now when there arose of great dissension, the commander,
- 8:25fearing lest Paul might be pulled to pieces by them,
- 8:28commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from
- 8:31among them and bring him into the barracks.
- 8:33So this was getting dangerous. I mean, there was a big outroar
- 8:36here. There was a potential here of
- 8:38murder upon Paul, and so they had to get him out of there.
- 8:42It was this mass confusion. So here's Paul.
- 8:46Now think about this. It's like your greatest
- 8:49opportunity to share your faith with your family, maybe on a
- 8:51holiday or someone you work with and and you think the timing's
- 8:55perfect and it's all set up and you're just praying it's going
- 8:58to go well. And you got all the verses lined
- 9:00up and you got your testimony ready, and you begin to tell the
- 9:04people about what Jesus has done for you, and it falls on deaf
- 9:08ears. They begin to yell at you or
- 9:12complain, or they don't want to hear it.
- 9:15They bring up all your flaws and faults that you've had in your
- 9:17life and saying, who are you to say that you're a Christian when
- 9:21you did this or you acted this way or you said that and you
- 9:24know what it's like. And you would be deflated,
- 9:26right? You would be discouraged.
- 9:28You had the chance to tell them and it seemed like it didn't
- 9:31work out. Like Lord, why?
- 9:34I really practice, I was really prepared and my intention and my
- 9:38desire was to really be a blessing.
- 9:41And this is a mess. I've made a complete mess out of
- 9:43all this. Now if Paul would have listened
- 9:46to the people in regards to not going up to Jerusalem right now,
- 9:49all this wouldn't have gone down this way.
- 9:52But keep in mind that the Lord says all things work together
- 9:55for good to those who love Him and are called according to His
- 9:58purpose. So in your life and mine, the
- 10:02things that we've done or situations where we shared our
- 10:05faith that it's just been a complete bust is never in vain
- 10:09because the Lord promises His word won't return void if people
- 10:13laugh at you or scoff at you or reject you or ridicule you
- 10:17because of what it is you believe and what you're
- 10:20committed to in your life. We should just trust God in
- 10:23that. Even though it didn't work out,
- 10:25we wish it would work out better, right?
- 10:28But sometimes it doesn't. And that's the mystery of life.
- 10:32God causes all things to work out according to the counsel of
- 10:35His own will, not my will or your will.
- 10:38His will be done right. So we're to be obedient to do
- 10:41what He tells us to do, regardless of the potential
- 10:44consequences, especially in regard to sharing our faith or
- 10:47standing up for our faith. But Paul is, I'm sure,
- 10:50discouraged. Now he's in this prison.
- 10:52It's not a pleasant place to be. And this isn't verse 11.
- 10:56But the following night, the Lord stood by him and said, now
- 11:00the Lord is faithful to be with us and our failings.
- 11:04He's not like people who will reject us and tell us we're
- 11:08worthless or we're disqualified. Or, you know, the Lord is the
- 11:12God of the second chance, the third chance, the fifth chance,
- 11:15the hundred chance. He never gives up on us.
- 11:19He always comes to us to assure us and to encourage us and to
- 11:23love on us. He doesn't come to revile us or
- 11:25to condemn us or to to judge us as his kids.
- 11:28He's a loving father and he knows how to minister to us.
- 11:31He knew Paul felt like a failure.
- 11:33He knew Paul had the heads up not to go.
- 11:36And Jesus didn't say, well, the reason this has happened is
- 11:39because you didn't listen, right?
- 11:41Like I would as a parent, I'd say to my kids, if you wouldn't
- 11:44have done that, like I told you, you shouldn't, this wouldn't
- 11:48have happened. That's not the best way to
- 11:49minister to your kids. You should try to figure out a
- 11:52different way to get to them, right?
- 11:54But we're all the same way. That's how we all act.
- 11:56And it's just, you know, self righteousness or being judges or
- 11:59whatever. But this is the Lord here.
- 12:02He says to him, be of good cheer.
- 12:04Paul's down in the dumps, be of good cheer.
- 12:06You got to be kidding me. This is how God loves us.
- 12:11And he says Paul, for as you have testified for me in
- 12:15Jerusalem and he didn't give an attitude of how well it went or
- 12:18how bad it went. He just said you testified for
- 12:21me in Jerusalem. That meant something.
- 12:23So you must also bear witness at Rome, and Paul's greatest desire
- 12:28was to eventually get the room before he died to share.
- 12:31Paul loved being in the big cities and seeing the
- 12:34architecture and reading about the artwork and meeting all the
- 12:36interesting people. He loved to sightsee and he was
- 12:40a Taurus, but he was also an apostle and whenever he went
- 12:43into a city he wanted to become all things to all men that he
- 12:46might win some. He tried to have start up
- 12:48conversations to be able to find a place of relating with people
- 12:51on their term as opposed to speaking down to him.
- 12:55He was just that way and something we can learn by his
- 12:58methodology and evangelism. He didn't pound people on the
- 13:01head like many of us have done at times.
- 13:04And so he's encouraging Paul and I pray today, wherever you're at
- 13:09and spiritual and walking and life and circumstances and
- 13:12things that don't seem to be working out right the way you'd
- 13:15like him to, but the Lord's coming alongside of you telling
- 13:18you to be a good sheer, Don't be discouraged.
- 13:24Don't be dismayed for your Lord, your God is with you wherever
- 13:29you go. He promises He'll never leave us
- 13:32or forsake us. People will leave you, People
- 13:34will forsake you. But Jesus will never leave you,
- 13:37will He? He promises He won't.
- 13:41And when you're alone in your house or in your bed crying or
- 13:44going through some tough time or some situation because of life
- 13:47that happened that you weren't anticipating and people, maybe
- 13:51you're telling you you brought things upon yourself and you
- 13:53deserve or whatever, God won't minister to you that way.
- 13:56When you're his kid, he'll come and he'll tenderly restore you
- 14:02and build you up and strengthen you so you have the courage to
- 14:05go on. Be of good cheer means be of
- 14:09good courage. Don't give up.
- 14:12And so, and when it was day, some of the Jews in verse 12
- 14:16banded together and bound themselves under an oath,
- 14:19saying, and this is the insurrection group here, the
- 14:22people that really hate Paul, that they would neither eat nor
- 14:25drink until they had killed Paul.
- 14:26So they're fasting, preparing to do something they think is going
- 14:31to be a righteous act. Get rid of Paul.
- 14:33Now, there were more than 40 who had formed this conspiracy, not
- 14:37a few people. It's a big group.
- 14:39They came to the chief priests and elders and said, and what's
- 14:42interesting here, they're not going to the Pharisees.
- 14:45The chief priests and elders are representing the Sadducees, and
- 14:50these people that want to kill him are the group of the
- 14:53Sadducees. We've bound ourselves under a
- 14:55great oath that we will eat nothing until we have killed
- 14:58Paul. Now you therefore, together with
- 15:00the council, suggest to the commander that he'd be brought
- 15:04down to you tomorrow as though you were going to make further
- 15:06inquires concerning him. But we are ready to kill him
- 15:10before he comes near. So this is a setup against the
- 15:13Apostle Paul. Paul's in a prison, no one to
- 15:16help him except the one who said of good cheer.
- 15:21He controls everything. He controls all the
- 15:24circumstances of all people and all places at this time in this
- 15:30next verse, only God could cause this to happen.
- 15:34So when Paul's sister son heard of their ambush, then we never
- 15:38heard of Paul's sister before, let alone his family.
- 15:41His nephew's there in this area. He happens to be walking by.
- 15:45Maybe he's out playing with his buddies.
- 15:47He goes down one of those alleys and he hears these guys talking
- 15:50about what it is they're going to do to Uncle Paul.
- 15:54So he goes and he went and he enters the barracks and told
- 15:58Paul what he had heard. He tells Paul everything that's
- 16:04going to go down. And then Paul called 1 of the
- 16:09centurions to him and said, take this young man to the commander
- 16:12for he has something to tell him.
- 16:15So he took him and brought him to the commander and said, Paul,
- 16:17the prisoner called me to him and asked me to bring this young
- 16:20man to you. He has something to say to you.
- 16:23Now this is interesting. Most commanders wouldn't have
- 16:25any time for some young kid. Hey, get away from me kid, you
- 16:28bother me. You know I don't want to.
- 16:30But this commander was compelled by God, the sovereign God, to
- 16:34listen to what this kid had to say.
- 16:35And he asked him privately, what is it that you have to tell me?
- 16:39And he said, the Jews have agreed to ask that you bring
- 16:42Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were
- 16:44going to inquire more fully about him.
- 16:47But do not yield to them, for more than 40 of them lie and
- 16:50wait for him, men who have bound themselves by an oath that they
- 16:54would neither eat nor drink until they have killed him.
- 16:57And now they are ready waiting for the promise from you.
- 17:00So he gives them the whole skinny of what's going down
- 17:03here. And the commander in verse 22,
- 17:05let the young man depart and commanded him, tell no one that
- 17:09you've revealed these things to me.
- 17:11And he called in verse 23 for two centurion saying, prepare
- 17:15200 soldiers, 70 horsemen, and 200 spear men to go to Caesarea
- 17:21at the third hour of the night and provide Mons to set Paul on
- 17:24and bring him safely to Phoenix. The governor and he wrote a
- 17:27letter in the following manner. So this is a setup.
- 17:30This is half the Garrison army that the high priest was working
- 17:36with. And this other guy here now is
- 17:39involved with getting Paul safely out of the city so he
- 17:43won't be assassinated. And this is a big entourage here
- 17:47of a lot of people. They were going to walk about 47
- 17:51miles to the first city, stay overnight.
- 17:53The next morning they were going to be on horseback and get Paul
- 17:56safely into Caesarea, a Roman province, and he would now be
- 18:00under the jurisdiction of the Roman government.
- 18:03And so Claudius Lyceus writes the letter that they're going to
- 18:07give to Felix whenever Paul's delivered their greetings.
- 18:11This man was seized by the Jews and was about to be killed by
- 18:14them coming with the troops. I rescued him, having learned
- 18:18that he was a Roman. Now, of course, he was involved
- 18:20with wanting Paul to be beaten as well until he found out he
- 18:23was a Roman citizen. But he learned a lot about the
- 18:26issue that Paul wasn't really guilty of any crime.
- 18:30And so in verse 28, and when I wanted to know the reason,
- 18:33reason they accuse him, I brought him before the council.
- 18:35I found out that he was accused concerning questions of their
- 18:39law, but had nothing charged against him deserving of death
- 18:42or change. And when it was told me the Jews
- 18:46lay in wait for the man, I sent him immediately to you and also
- 18:50commanded his accusers to state before you the charges against
- 18:54him. So what a beautiful letter.
- 18:57I mean, Paul's guiltless. There's no reason for him to be
- 19:01treated like this, and he's passing them off to the next
- 19:05government leader in the province of Rome.
- 19:09Farewell then the soldiers in verse 31, as they were
- 19:13commanded, they took Paul and brought him by night at TI
- 19:16Pytis. That was the place 47 miles
- 19:19away. And the next day they let the
- 19:21horsemen to go with him and return to the barracks.
- 19:24And when they came to Caesarea and had delivered the letter to
- 19:27the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
- 19:30And when the governor had read it, he asked what province he
- 19:33was from. And when he understood that he
- 19:35was from Cilicia, he said that's a region of Syria.
- 19:39Paul came out of Tarsus and the all these regions are all part
- 19:43of this Roman area. He says I will hear you when
- 19:47your accusers have also come. And he commanded him to be kept
- 19:51in Herod's Praetorian. So what's beautiful here is that
- 19:54he is in. He's got it made.
- 19:57Now. This isn't like any kind of
- 19:58jail. He's in the palace of the
- 20:01leader. This is really nice place to be.
- 20:03Paul probably got there. I can't.
- 20:05The Lord really is with me, isn't he?
- 20:08It's my best life now, right? I got prosperity now.
- 20:11This is good. It goes from doom and gloom.
- 20:14To joy and excitement and that's how the Lord is many times we
- 20:19get in situations that seems all Hell's broken loose, we're in
- 20:23doom and gloom. We think there's no hope, right?
- 20:26We get there sometimes and then the Lord reminds us and in his
- 20:30time he changes the circumstances of our lives and
- 20:33they become completely different, don't they?
- 20:36And we can all give testimony of how good God's been to us, all
- 20:39of us in times of challenge of life.
- 20:42And I think the take away from this, at least for me, you know,
- 20:45sometimes you read a chapter and you say, like, how is this going
- 20:48to connect with anybody here? That's history, It's the Bible.
- 20:53It's true, we need to hear it. But like, where are you guys
- 20:55going to find some place to dig your heels in and say, hey, this
- 20:59is helping me. I can stand on this and be
- 21:02reminded of what I learned today.
- 21:04And it's going to help me realize that the Lord's with me
- 21:07and he's not going to forsake me or abandoned me.
- 21:11And so that's one thing I pray that you take away today, no
- 21:14matter what you're going through right now or what the challenges
- 21:17are, how difficult life might be.
- 21:19At times it is. Sometimes it's wonderful and
- 21:21everything's going great. Other times it isn't.
- 21:23But when you go to those times, it isn't wonderful and it's
- 21:26hard. Remember the promise of the
- 21:29Lord. He'll never leave you or forsake
- 21:31you. And he says be of good cheer,
- 21:33have courage. He said that to Joshua, Be
- 21:38strong, be not dismayed, neither be thou afraid, for the Lord thy
- 21:42God is with you wherever you go. Have not I commanded you, Be
- 21:47strong and of a good courage? Be not afraid, neither be thou
- 21:51dismayed, for the Lord thy God is with you wherever you go.
- 21:54And he says that to you and I every day.
- 22:00You're getting up for work, getting up to raise a kid,
- 22:02you're getting up to go to the doctor, you're getting up to pay
- 22:04the bills or whatever it is you got to do.
- 22:06You're in a maybe a hard marriage, maybe your kids are
- 22:09going crazy. Whatever he's saying, I'm with
- 22:12you. I'll help you, depend on me,
- 22:15trust in me, rely upon me. And he's faithful.
- 22:21If he wasn't faithful, none of us would be here today, but
- 22:26we're here because we know his promises are true.
- 22:29He's not a liar and he'll be with you to the very end.
- 22:33One be with you to the very end. And whenever you have a decision
- 22:38to make, and sometimes you make the wrong decision, don't beat
- 22:42yourself up because of the decision you've made.
- 22:45Learn from waiting on the Lord. Wait on the Lord for the
- 22:49decisions that you need to make in your life.
- 22:52Let's praise the Lord, Father. God, we thank you for the joy,
- 22:54Lord, your presence, your peace, Father, all the good things,
- 22:58God, that you give to us every day.
- 23:00And Lord, we're so thankful for your frankness and your reality
- 23:04and the simplicity of the Bible and how you teach us because we
- 23:07can relate to it as people, Lord, human beings failed,
- 23:11flawed people that you're perfecting and changing and
- 23:14making more like Jesus a little bit every day.
- 23:17And Lord, we thank you for that. We thank you for the Apostle
- 23:20Paul and his willingness, Lord, to serve you the way he did.
- 23:26And he never looked backwards. He just kept going forward.
- 23:29He kept depending on you until his eventual martyrdom, Lord,
- 23:33when you did take him home to be with you.
- 23:36We look forward to meeting him one day as we obviously looking
- 23:39forward to meeting you. But all these people that served
- 23:41you, boy, we could talk to them for hundreds of years about what
- 23:45they experienced, what they went through, what it must have been
- 23:47like, and share our stories as well, Lord, because they're just
- 23:51as powerful. The testimonies.
- 23:53Have your faith on us, love. Thank you for listening to this
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching us about the book of Acts in this
- 24:04series. Acts is a powerful and unique
- 24:07part of Scripture, not just because it records the spread of
- 24:10the gospel geographically from Jerusalem to the ends of the
- 24:13earth, but also culturally. Acts shows us how the message of
- 24:18Jesus moved beyond its Jewish roots and began to reach the
- 24:21Gentile world. What started with Peter leading
- 24:24a small group in the Upper Room became a global movement with
- 24:28Paul taking the gospel to cities, synagogues, and
- 24:32marketplaces across the Roman Empire.
- 24:35Acts captures this vital transition and reminds us that
- 24:39the good news of Jesus is for all people in every place.
- 24:43May we be inspired to carry that same gospel boldly into our
- 24:48world today. Living Waters of Grace comes to
- 24:51you from Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
