- 0:18It took a minute,
- 0:19now it didn't happen right away.
- 0:21When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:22you decide to stay.
- 0:23That's how a winner's made.
- 0:34What is going on, everybody?
- 0:35Welcome to the Cloud Cell Media Podcast.
- 0:38We're featuring the athletes
- 0:39of the 2024 CrossFit Games Semifinals.
- 0:42And with me today is Jacob Marlow.
- 0:44What's going on, Jacob?
- 0:46What's up?
- 0:48So it's funny you're wearing that shirt.
- 0:50Your coach has been on my show,
- 0:52and he is now being
- 0:53affectionately called Coach Krispy Kreme.
- 0:56Yeah.
- 0:58Yeah.
- 1:00And that's an Einhorn CrossFit shirt,
- 1:02correct?
- 1:03yeah yeah closest uh
- 1:05essential head laying
- 1:06around yeah yeah um he
- 1:09actually I think he lost
- 1:10his now he has this
- 1:11nickname and he doesn't
- 1:12have the shirt to represent
- 1:13anymore oh yeah yeah yeah I
- 1:17never I never called him
- 1:18coach krispy kreme I don't
- 1:20know what I've called him
- 1:22probably things that can't
- 1:23air on tv or whatever but yeah maybe so
- 1:28Uh, I,
- 1:29before we get into like deep dive
- 1:30CrossFit,
- 1:31I got to ask you a question
- 1:32about something I found on the internet.
- 1:36That is your profile picture
- 1:39on a game site.
- 1:41Oh yeah.
- 1:42That dude.
- 1:43That's me when I was like 12
- 1:46or 13 and I thought
- 1:49baseball teams were cool
- 1:52and Justin Bieber hair.
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:54It looked like you were
- 1:55preparing for a modeling career.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:58Those are family photos that
- 1:59didn't take off.
- 2:03There you go.
- 2:04Yeah.
- 2:05That's that's full blown, uh,
- 2:06early Beaver hair, man.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:09I was rocking that till I was like 16.
- 2:14Wow.
- 2:16We got Corey in the house already.
- 2:17Uh, I'd horn is Finkel.
- 2:19You know that reference?
- 2:22No, I wish I did.
- 2:24So back in the day,
- 2:25there was a movie with Jim
- 2:26Carrey called Ace Ventura.
- 2:30And there's a mystery in the movie.
- 2:32And the mystery is revealed
- 2:35that a female character
- 2:37named Einhorn is also the
- 2:40kicker for the Dolphins named Finkel.
- 2:43Okay.
- 2:43So he's like, Einhorn is Finkel.
- 2:45Finkel is Einhorn.
- 2:46Yeah, I've seen Ace Ventura.
- 2:48I just didn't remember the
- 2:49name was Einhorn.
- 2:50Yeah, yeah.
- 2:53And he also says baseball tees are cool.
- 2:57Yeah, I didn't make them look cool,
- 2:59though.
- 3:02All right.
- 3:04So I've been following your
- 3:05career because last year we
- 3:07followed Kelly Baker for the whole season,
- 3:09and you guys were training
- 3:10partners last year, right?
- 3:13Yep, me and Kelly.
- 3:16Yeah.
- 3:16So how different is it this
- 3:18year now that she's taken the year off?
- 3:21Do you see her much in the gym?
- 3:24It's definitely a lot different,
- 3:25but not so much that she
- 3:27took off the year.
- 3:32We trained together every
- 3:32day last year leading up,
- 3:34but I was living in Houston at the time,
- 3:36and now I'm back home.
- 3:38in Beaumont with my parents for now.
- 3:42Uh,
- 3:43and so I've been lone wolf in it for
- 3:45like the last year and a half.
- 3:47So that that's been the
- 3:48biggest change and me being
- 3:51as social as I am.
- 3:52It's been very hard, but no,
- 3:55I definitely do miss
- 3:56training with Kelly and Hattie.
- 3:59Uh,
- 4:00it's been way different than last year.
- 4:04So it looked like from your Instagram,
- 4:06you're doing a lot of garage workout.
- 4:08Basically all I'm doing.
- 4:10I'll go to Greater Heights
- 4:11on the weekends.
- 4:12That's Tristan's gym.
- 4:14And then I have a membership
- 4:15to a gym here in Beaumont
- 4:17that I'll go like once a week.
- 4:18But other than that,
- 4:20it's all in the garage, all by myself.
- 4:24And that's Beaumont, Texas, correct?
- 4:27Yes.
- 4:27I'm actually a little town
- 4:28outside of Beaumont named Vider, Texas.
- 4:31But most people don't know.
- 4:34I don't know if you know Wad Zombie,
- 4:36but he thought California,
- 4:37he tries to get everybody to California.
- 4:40Oh, no.
- 4:41I'm a Texas boy.
- 4:43Yeah.
- 4:44Wad Zombie is one of the
- 4:45best follows on Instagram.
- 4:48He does a bunch of memes in
- 4:49the CrossFit space.
- 4:51Yeah.
- 4:51I think I follow him.
- 4:54Yeah.
- 4:56So now you're doing all this
- 4:57training alone.
- 4:58Did I see footage of you at
- 5:01Bill Leahy's place?
- 5:02yes old billy so you
- 5:05occasionally get out and
- 5:06trade with some other
- 5:07people yeah yeah I'll go
- 5:09you know I've got little
- 5:12hot spots of friends I'll
- 5:14go to uh actually a lot of
- 5:16people in louisiana I got
- 5:18you know bill lahey my
- 5:19buddy peyton gray and
- 5:20aubrey uh up in north
- 5:22louisiana bills my south
- 5:23louisiana people so
- 5:26kind of beaumont is I mean
- 5:28we're my town vater is like
- 5:2930 minutes from the
- 5:31louisiana border so we're
- 5:33basically louisiana well
- 5:35this corey that's been
- 5:36popping in he's he's from
- 5:38that same area in louisiana
- 5:40oh okay I call him my cajun
- 5:42friend because you can't
- 5:43understand a word he says
- 5:45uh and he says it really
- 5:47fast yeah that's how they
- 5:49talk down there uh
- 5:51But with Bill,
- 5:54I had Tetlow on my first 75 interview.
- 5:58He'd straight there with Bill.
- 6:00Man,
- 6:01is it like a little boys club there at
- 6:03Bill's house?
- 6:04Yeah, kind of.
- 6:05You know, when I go over there, it's...
- 6:09It's almost like a, I don't know,
- 6:10a little summer camp.
- 6:12I'm staying in the bunk beds.
- 6:13He's got his guest room.
- 6:15Then we've got Bill in
- 6:17another room and then Colin,
- 6:18his roommate in another.
- 6:19And then every session is at
- 6:21least like five dudes.
- 6:24So it's fun.
- 6:25It's definitely a lot
- 6:26different than what I'm used to.
- 6:29Yeah.
- 6:31How much better is the
- 6:32training there when you're
- 6:33with all the guys pushing
- 6:35each other than it is like
- 6:37in your garage every day?
- 6:39Honestly, it's so much.
- 6:42I can still get after it in
- 6:44my garage alone,
- 6:45but it's so much easier to
- 6:46start when you've got two
- 6:48to five other dudes ready
- 6:50to get after it as well.
- 6:53It can be very easy to waste
- 6:56a lot of time by yourself,
- 6:57but everybody it builds
- 6:59kind of stays on it because
- 7:01a lot of people are under
- 7:02time constraint because
- 7:03they got work or lunch
- 7:05break or we just want to
- 7:07hurry up so we can get more pieces in.
- 7:09So it's a lot, a lot more fast pace.
- 7:12Yeah.
- 7:13So another thing I wanted to, uh,
- 7:14to talk to you about is in
- 7:16your edge at your place,
- 7:19it appears like you have an
- 7:21outdoor rig that you
- 7:23handmade for rope climbs, muscles maybe.
- 7:26Uh huh.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:28So I guess like a year and a half ago,
- 7:30I don't even remember when
- 7:31we did it about that time.
- 7:32Uh,
- 7:33when I moved back home, I was like,
- 7:35all right, I've got all the equipment,
- 7:37but I don't have a tall
- 7:38enough ceiling in my garage.
- 7:39So my dad knew my dad, mostly my dad.
- 7:43Uh, we got like big 20 foot,
- 7:46like six by six wooden posts, putting,
- 7:50put them five foot into the ground,
- 7:51four foot, uh,
- 7:52cemented them in and then
- 7:53got some bars and, uh, ropes and rings.
- 7:57And then we've got the,
- 7:58since the rope can't sit out there for,
- 8:01uh,
- 8:02you know, yeah, there it is.
- 8:03It's just a rope.
- 8:05Can't sit out there.
- 8:06It'll get weathered.
- 8:06We have like a, on a pulley system.
- 8:09Um,
- 8:09so I just pull it up and down when I
- 8:12need it.
- 8:14Wow.
- 8:15And how, how, uh, when you're on that rig,
- 8:18how much does it shake?
- 8:21Honestly, not really.
- 8:22Uh, this is the second rig we've built.
- 8:27Uh, this one is wooden obviously, but we,
- 8:30uh,
- 8:31years ago probably four
- 8:33years ago we built a uh
- 8:35metal one my dad is super
- 8:38handyman country boy and so
- 8:40he welded together uh a
- 8:42bunch of four by four
- 8:44galvanized uh rods or poles
- 8:49but uh yeah this one
- 8:50doesn't really shake at all
- 8:52uh had to adjust the rings
- 8:54a little bit because I get
- 8:56a little bit of sway but
- 8:58Other than looking right
- 9:00into the sun for a lot of
- 9:02pretty much everything,
- 9:02it's pretty sweet.
- 9:05Corey Leonard says, wait, that's wood?
- 9:09Yep.
- 9:10Like six by six solid wood beams.
- 9:16And he says yard fitness for the win.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:19Yeah.
- 9:20Transitions get to,
- 9:22they start to play a factor.
- 9:23If I'm doing any kind of,
- 9:25that's why I have a membership at that.
- 9:28another gym CrossFit Belmont here in town,
- 9:31just because there's some stuff that,
- 9:33you know,
- 9:34I can't really do heavy snatches
- 9:35or cleans in the yard.
- 9:38And if it's something fast,
- 9:39I don't want to walk all
- 9:40the way from our garage to the rig.
- 9:43It kind of kills a workout,
- 9:46but overall it's pretty solid.
- 9:51So when I watched you last year,
- 9:54it is obvious that you are
- 9:55a power output athlete.
- 9:58Like, put some weight on a barbell,
- 10:00give you a rower.
- 10:02You're in your comfort zone.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06What have you done this
- 10:07offseason to change that to
- 10:10have better performances at semis?
- 10:14um well we've done a ton of
- 10:16long stuff so much running
- 10:19long biking so much burpees
- 10:23I've gotten tremendously
- 10:24better at burpees I don't
- 10:25really uh we just call them
- 10:27struggle burpees uh I've
- 10:29got plenty of clips of me
- 10:31doing them but uh I've got
- 10:32so much better at all that
- 10:34stuff you know I think
- 10:35there's still definitely
- 10:36work to do on my running um but
- 10:41I've gotten tremendously
- 10:42better at all the other
- 10:44body weight movements that
- 10:45I've previously struggled with.
- 10:48So I'm excited to do a
- 10:50little bit better at that
- 10:51stuff this year at semis.
- 10:53Well,
- 10:53you get to test the run right off the
- 10:54bat.
- 10:56Yeah, that one,
- 10:57that one's going to be a ground and it's,
- 11:01it's not on an air runner.
- 11:03It's on the ground.
- 11:05yeah I would say I'm a
- 11:07little bit better at air
- 11:08runner just because I'm so
- 11:09heavy um and that's where I
- 11:11spent all my off season
- 11:13running which I'm now
- 11:14learning maybe I should
- 11:15have hit the track a little
- 11:17bit more but uh you know
- 11:21we're still gonna make do
- 11:23get after it so when you
- 11:25see an event like that
- 11:26right it has all these 800
- 11:27runs but it also has clean and jerks
- 11:32And I've heard analysts say
- 11:35that don't sleep on the clean and jerks.
- 11:38That builds up to quite a
- 11:39bit of weight over the 50 reps.
- 11:44Have you tested that?
- 11:45Do you think that will even
- 11:48it out a little bit for you?
- 11:51I've tested it.
- 11:52And to be honest,
- 11:54it just made it more of a grind.
- 11:55It wasn't...
- 11:58Yeah, definitely don't sleep on them.
- 12:00But I think that, you know,
- 12:04the biggest part of this
- 12:05workout is being good at running.
- 12:09You know,
- 12:09the cleaning jerks won't be a
- 12:12saving grace.
- 12:14But who knows?
- 12:16I mean,
- 12:16I have no idea what the rest of the
- 12:18field is going to do.
- 12:21But I think that one I'm
- 12:23going to have to just focus
- 12:24on making it hurt as much as I can.
- 12:29So when you look at the
- 12:30docket of the six events,
- 12:32what's the one you're
- 12:32looking forward to the most?
- 12:35Probably snatch one.
- 12:37You know, that's my favorite.
- 12:39I'm super comfortable with the snatch.
- 12:41That was my best event last year.
- 12:44You know,
- 12:45don't want to be a one trick pony,
- 12:46but I'm still good at snatching.
- 12:48So I feel confident about that.
- 12:52When you see something like that,
- 12:53that this is like the third
- 12:55time now it's shown up at
- 12:57this level of competition.
- 12:592016,
- 13:00it was a regional event across the board.
- 13:052021, it was at West Coast Classic.
- 13:07Now it shows up again.
- 13:09And it's in this iconic stadium.
- 13:12So not only do you get to do it,
- 13:14and it's something people
- 13:15have done through the years,
- 13:16you get to do it at the
- 13:18famous tennis stadium.
- 13:20Does that mean a little bit extra to you?
- 13:23Yeah, it'll be super cool.
- 13:25So I guess I started CrossFit in like 2017,
- 13:3118.
- 13:32So I guess they were out of
- 13:32the tennis stadium by then,
- 13:33but it was like that was a
- 13:35lot of the media that they
- 13:36had at the time.
- 13:36So seeing them, you know,
- 13:38Rich and everybody at that stadium,
- 13:40and now that we get to go back,
- 13:41I'm super excited for.
- 13:42And, you know, it'll –
- 13:47definitely be I feel like
- 13:49we're a little bit spoiled
- 13:50our semi uh you know I
- 13:52don't know where the other
- 13:53ones are taking place but I
- 13:54know ours is the coolest uh
- 13:56arena so I'm stoked for
- 13:58that yeah I don't I don't
- 14:01know the international
- 14:02locations very well but
- 14:03like compared to knoxville
- 14:04and not not dogging on
- 14:06knoxville it's a nice arena
- 14:08it's not iconic
- 14:10yeah yeah I mean we could
- 14:13this venue could be a dump
- 14:14but the fact that it's
- 14:15carson and that history has
- 14:18already been made there
- 14:18it's going to be awesome
- 14:20yeah uh corey corey says uh
- 14:25I'm so glad I get to do 10
- 14:26cleaning jerks at 185 to
- 14:27get a break from this
- 14:28running jacob probably
- 14:30Yeah.
- 14:31Yeah.
- 14:31Except my feet are going to be on that.
- 14:33That was the worst part.
- 14:34I've tested it.
- 14:35I tested it once.
- 14:36I did some intervals after
- 14:37or yesterday or the day
- 14:40before and my feet, they are on fire.
- 14:47Yeah.
- 14:47When I run,
- 14:48like my feet swell a little bit.
- 14:51And the first thing I want
- 14:52to do when I stop running
- 14:53is get my shoes off.
- 14:56Yeah.
- 14:56But for this,
- 14:57you got to stop and do clean
- 14:59and jerks with your feet on fire.
- 15:02Yeah.
- 15:03Yeah.
- 15:03And I saw a video of, uh,
- 15:06I guess the semifinal this weekend,
- 15:08their 800 meter run is like
- 15:10inside zigzag between cones.
- 15:14So I'm like, that should be fun.
- 15:17Uh,
- 15:18Well, you know,
- 15:18who knows what ours is going to look like,
- 15:20but I'm sure there will be
- 15:23something more than just a straight there,
- 15:25straight back.
- 15:27So this is my prediction.
- 15:30It may or may not.
- 15:31So Boz was on barbell spin a
- 15:33couple of nights or a week
- 15:35ago and said that the run
- 15:38at this tennis table is
- 15:39going to be iconic.
- 15:41Well,
- 15:41there's nothing more iconic than the
- 15:43berm run.
- 15:44um and there's a tunnel from
- 15:46the tennis stadium to the
- 15:47soccer field and then you
- 15:49can run run up those stairs
- 15:50and do the berm run yeah
- 15:54yeah I've heard yeah me and
- 15:56uh a buddy were talking and
- 15:59I don't I don't think we'll
- 16:02be on the soccer stadium I
- 16:03mean I guess we could but I
- 16:05think they would have to
- 16:07buy out two venues just to
- 16:08use it for one event so
- 16:11I don't know what they'll do.
- 16:13It's so up in the air.
- 16:14I mean, either way, it's going to be hard,
- 16:18but I don't think we'll be
- 16:19in the soccer stadium.
- 16:20I feel like they'll probably have us run.
- 16:21I haven't even looked at the setup,
- 16:23but maybe in the parking lot.
- 16:25I just don't see us getting
- 16:28into two venues for,
- 16:30unless they just let them use it.
- 16:31And I figured they'd have to,
- 16:33pay for that too you don't
- 16:35know how much they're gonna
- 16:36use it for equipment for uh
- 16:39vendor village for yeah
- 16:42types of things right so
- 16:43maybe already in use
- 16:44because there's a tunnel
- 16:45between the two uh-huh that
- 16:48you can like run through
- 16:50yeah so it it is doable I
- 16:53don't know it the parking
- 16:55lot would not be iconic
- 16:57yeah I think I think that
- 16:59would be fun though running the berm um
- 17:03would make it way harder
- 17:05yeah the stairs would make
- 17:06it so much harder yeah in
- 17:10here in beaumont it's like
- 17:12the flattest place on earth
- 17:13we don't have any hills you
- 17:14know the only stairs we
- 17:16have is at the football
- 17:19stadium at the high school
- 17:21but other than that it's flat so
- 17:26i want to talk about tristan
- 17:27uh he's been doing some
- 17:28shows with me lately we've
- 17:30become really good friends
- 17:32uh what's it like having
- 17:33him as your coach um it's
- 17:36fun I i think me and
- 17:38tristan I was like one of
- 17:40the first people on ascend
- 17:42uh and we slowly just kind
- 17:46of he slowly became my
- 17:48coach I was doing other
- 17:50people's programming at first when i
- 17:54moved to houston to his gym
- 17:56and well at first we were
- 17:58competitors that's how we
- 17:59met uh at a competition in
- 18:01louisiana and then I moved
- 18:02to his gym for school uh
- 18:04was in that area I was
- 18:06doing other people's
- 18:07programming and slowly I
- 18:09was like hey dude this
- 18:10seems like a lot and I
- 18:11don't have enough time and
- 18:12so he would adjust it you
- 18:14know every other day every
- 18:15day and eventually when
- 18:18ascend started and he joined uh
- 18:21he asked me to come on and I
- 18:23love working with them.
- 18:24I mean, it's like,
- 18:25we're basically like brothers, you know,
- 18:27he was, well,
- 18:28I would say more like older brother,
- 18:30little brother, uh, kind of thing,
- 18:33but we're very similar.
- 18:35Like we like to have a
- 18:36reason behind what we're doing.
- 18:38We both think pretty logically and, uh,
- 18:42you know, we get along super well.
- 18:44Like it was a supernatural
- 18:47friendship made over time.
- 18:49Like now it's probably been,
- 18:51probably coaching me for at
- 18:54least two two and a half
- 18:55years something like that
- 18:57and we've known each other
- 18:58for like three three and a
- 18:59half um but I couldn't
- 19:02imagine anybody else
- 19:04coaching me at this point
- 19:08he's he's a really good
- 19:09dude uh so I noticed above
- 19:12your head there's a like a
- 19:13whole plate with baseballs
- 19:15is that your former life
- 19:17yeah yeah all the stuff in
- 19:18the background I just I
- 19:19didn't have anywhere else
- 19:20better to do it uh uh yeah
- 19:24that's that's sorry when it
- 19:27came to athletics is that
- 19:28what you were a baseball
- 19:29player yeah yeah I was a
- 19:32catcher back in little
- 19:35league and like my first
- 19:37two years of high school
- 19:39then I quit to do crossfit
- 19:42what what how did you find
- 19:44crossfit and how did you
- 19:46know you were really good at it
- 19:48Well, first time I heard of it,
- 19:52my aunt actually did it.
- 19:55And, you know,
- 19:56at first I always thought it
- 19:57was like running and kettlebell swings.
- 19:59And I was like, I'm not doing that.
- 20:00That's for girls.
- 20:02I just thought it was dumb.
- 20:04I don't know what it was.
- 20:06But then, you know, I was like 16 or so,
- 20:10bored one night on Netflix.
- 20:12And I watched one of the documentaries,
- 20:14you know, seeing...
- 20:15like Rich Froning, you know, Matt,
- 20:18Josh Bridges.
- 20:20I was like, dude, they're jacked.
- 20:21I want to be like that.
- 20:23Uh,
- 20:23so I watched like all the documentaries
- 20:26that night.
- 20:28And then the next morning I
- 20:30showed up to my CrossFit
- 20:31gym at like 4 30 in the
- 20:33morning for their class and
- 20:37started from there.
- 20:38And that's,
- 20:38I did the 4 30 class for like
- 20:40my whole first year.
- 20:41Looking back, I don't know how I did it.
- 20:43Wow.
- 20:45and and at what point did
- 20:46you know you could be good
- 20:48enough to compete on the
- 20:49highest level oh you know
- 20:58hard question uh I didn't
- 21:00really start with the
- 21:01intention of competing I
- 21:03just wanted to get jacked
- 21:04and still waiting on that uh but
- 21:09Uh, you know, I just slowly kept, you know,
- 21:12I enjoyed the training aspect.
- 21:14I thought it was fun.
- 21:15You know, I was in high school for,
- 21:17from like my first two,
- 21:19two and a half years of doing it.
- 21:21So I just enjoyed the grind, you know,
- 21:23going in, having fun, uh,
- 21:26and slowly just started doing local comps,
- 21:28you know, then bigger comps,
- 21:30like fittest experience, uh,
- 21:33did well at those and just, you know,
- 21:34kept getting after it.
- 21:36And eventually the goal was like,
- 21:37all right, well,
- 21:39You know,
- 21:39I'm doing well at these local comps.
- 21:40Let's go to, you know,
- 21:42a regional or a semi or whatever.
- 21:45So it was just, you know,
- 21:47and after a certain point, I was like,
- 21:49I'm decent at it.
- 21:50You know, maybe, you know,
- 21:53I liked it because my
- 21:54mindset was always the one
- 21:56that works the hardest, you know,
- 21:59does the best.
- 22:02So I've always, I don't know.
- 22:06Okay.
- 22:07Well,
- 22:07another hard thing you've done is you
- 22:10got married recently.
- 22:12Yeah, like a week and a half ago.
- 22:15So honeymoon is in Carson?
- 22:19Yes.
- 22:19So got married May 4th and
- 22:22then going to compete at semis.
- 22:24And then from there,
- 22:25we're going on our honeymoon after.
- 22:32So there you are, newly married.
- 22:36uh it was uh it looked like
- 22:37it was a big big wedding oh
- 22:40I think there was maybe
- 22:41less than 200 people there
- 22:43um it was all our family's
- 22:46house they have a you know
- 22:48a lot of big nice lands
- 22:50pretty out there that was
- 22:51in the backyard uh they've
- 22:52got like a huge field out
- 22:53there so did the ceremony
- 22:55in that field and then had
- 22:58a uh the reception under
- 22:59all these trees wrapped in lights
- 23:03it was better than we both expected.
- 23:05Not that we expected it to be bad.
- 23:06We were just, you know,
- 23:08we both talked about it
- 23:08after and we were like, whoa,
- 23:09that was way better than
- 23:11what we imagined.
- 23:15Uh, why zombie says,
- 23:16please don't tell me your
- 23:17honeymoon is in LA.
- 23:19No, uh, place called Catalina Island,
- 23:22which I think it's off the
- 23:24coast of California.
- 23:26I know we got to take like
- 23:27hour and a half boat ride to get there.
- 23:30Um, looks cool.
- 23:31A lot of hiking, uh,
- 23:33paddle boarding you know
- 23:36very cool yeah we're
- 23:38excited and then the the
- 23:41last thing I just wanted to
- 23:42ask you is is it I went
- 23:44back to your instagram and
- 23:45it looked like you are a
- 23:48physical therapy assistant
- 23:50are you practicing that or
- 23:52are you just training to be an athlete
- 23:55yes uh yep I see I do home
- 23:59health so I go to people's
- 24:01houses uh you know whether
- 24:03they pretty much are
- 24:05homebound so they can't
- 24:06they either don't have a
- 24:07car to get somewhere but
- 24:08most of the time it's just
- 24:09because they're not
- 24:10physically able to get out
- 24:11of the house and go to an
- 24:13outpatient facility uh or
- 24:15at least not easily uh so
- 24:18yeah I i technically I'm
- 24:20full time uh but I see
- 24:22about 30 patients a week so
- 24:25I probably work 25,
- 24:2830 hours a week around there, maybe 35.
- 24:34But it's nice because it's super flexible.
- 24:37You know,
- 24:37I usually don't start my work day
- 24:38till like 10 a.m.
- 24:41And then I'll finish by four or five.
- 24:45So usually I can get some
- 24:46training in before and after.
- 24:50But yeah,
- 24:51I've been I graduated in May last year,
- 24:53so.
- 24:54Started in August, so I've been doing it,
- 24:56I don't know, maybe eight months or so,
- 24:59however long that's been.
- 25:01Is it,
- 25:01is it easy to get time off for these
- 25:03things like to go compete?
- 25:05Yes.
- 25:06Uh, yeah, the people I'm with are awesome.
- 25:08You know, they.
- 25:10are very accommodating for all the trips.
- 25:13You know,
- 25:13I've been super busy lately with
- 25:15wedding and now semis and then honeymoon.
- 25:21So it's nice because we just
- 25:22kind of shift our patients
- 25:23around to other therapists
- 25:25and we could cover for each other.
- 25:27So it is.
- 25:29It's really nice.
- 25:31Is were you ever a coach?
- 25:35No.
- 25:36Okay.
- 25:37Yeah,
- 25:37because a lot of times there's a
- 25:39correlation between
- 25:40coaching and wanting to
- 25:41help people and then doing
- 25:43something in the medical field.
- 25:45I was just trying to go down that road.
- 25:48Well, that's really cool, man.
- 25:49Yeah.
- 25:51A real rewarding job.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:55In my setting, home health,
- 25:57you don't see as much
- 25:58progress with patients as
- 26:00you maybe would with
- 26:01outpatient physical therapy.
- 26:05But
- 26:07you you still do you know I
- 26:09have a lot of patients that
- 26:10I'll be seeing for you know
- 26:13months at a time uh and
- 26:17they'll make a lot of
- 26:17progress you know a lot of
- 26:18my patients are it's pretty
- 26:20much 70 plus you know I
- 26:22have a few allies that are
- 26:23younger for whatever reason
- 26:25but a lot of them are older
- 26:27um my favorite ones are the
- 26:2990 plus year olds they're
- 26:30always hilarious um
- 26:33I always have something wild
- 26:35to say because at that age,
- 26:36you just don't care anymore.
- 26:38Yeah.
- 26:38No filter at all at that point.
- 26:40Yeah.
- 26:43So last question,
- 26:44you're going into semis this year.
- 26:48What is your realistic goal
- 26:49of where you want to place?
- 26:52Realistic.
- 26:54The goal is to be, you know,
- 26:58the goal is to do as good as we can do.
- 27:00So,
- 27:02what that is.
- 27:03Not sure yet.
- 27:03We'll find out, but, uh, I would love,
- 27:06I'd be happy if I could get
- 27:09very close to a qualifying spot, you know,
- 27:10within three or four spots of qualifying,
- 27:14if not qualifying.
- 27:16Um,
- 27:16but I know we got some good guys there
- 27:18and it's going to be a grind, uh,
- 27:21to qualify.
- 27:22So, you know,
- 27:23the goal is to be upper pack
- 27:26better than last year, but, uh,
- 27:30Yeah,
- 27:31mostly the goal is just to give it
- 27:32all in every workout and
- 27:33feel proud of my effort afterwards.
- 27:36I guess I have one follow-up, and that is,
- 27:38I talked to an athlete yesterday, he said,
- 27:39that first event with the
- 27:42800-meter run and the clean and jerk,
- 27:44you're going to be in the tennis stadium.
- 27:48And he said,
- 27:49it's going to take everything
- 27:50I can not to blow up
- 27:52because I'm going to want
- 27:53to go out hot in that setting,
- 27:55in that event.
- 27:59Are you going to feel the
- 28:00same nerves that you've got
- 28:01to kind of pull in the reins,
- 28:02make sure you go at your pace?
- 28:05Yeah.
- 28:06I mean, that's with every workout,
- 28:08no matter the competition,
- 28:09at least for me.
- 28:10You know, the adrenaline.
- 28:12competitiveness, uh, you feel like you're,
- 28:14you know, I always said,
- 28:15I feel like I get like, you know,
- 28:1725% fitter when I compete
- 28:19just because I'm willing to like die then,
- 28:23you know, slow down.
- 28:25But, uh, I think for that workout,
- 28:28I'm definitely going to
- 28:28have to hold my horses,
- 28:30not blow up because I will
- 28:32explode if I go out too fast.
- 28:35Um, so, but I'm pretty good at, uh,
- 28:39Yeah, coach said top 15,
- 28:41so that's on the record.
- 28:43That's top 15.
- 28:45Interesting.
- 28:45Tristan Patrick is in the chats now.
- 28:49Yeah,
- 28:50I actually don't think I told him I
- 28:51was doing this.
- 28:52Well, I don't think I told him one time.
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:55All good, man.
