- 0:00For over 2 decades, Inside Maine has delivered sharp political
- 0:03insight and in depth discussion with Maine's top decision makers
- 0:07on 98.5 FM, AM 560 and wgan.com. Thank you, Jeremy, that's
- 0:15awesome. Love that upbeat intro, Jeremy
- 0:18Mixer, producer on Inside Maine, along with Tony Randazzo, who's
- 0:22got The Newsroom buckled down with Walter, our weekend mascot
- 0:27here at WGAN Media Group. Yeah, he's sleeping soundly on
- 0:33the blanket behind me. He's we.
- 0:34Wore him out, yeah. I did I I brought some treats in
- 0:37for him too, just to kind of wake him up and he kind of
- 0:39nibbled at him and I gave him his chew and, and he's, he's
- 0:44sleeping soundly snoring. Pug snore very loudly.
- 0:48He's. A beautiful dog.
- 0:50Well, we appreciate everybody joining us today.
- 0:52A beautiful day here in Maine. Give a call 879-9426 and join
- 0:59the program. Again, I want to open this up to
- 1:01candidates that may be running for office regardless of their
- 1:05party affiliation. Give a call.
- 1:08That's one of the things here WGEN we're no one, no one.
- 1:11I won't say we're somewhat partisan or whatever, but bias,
- 1:15but we're open minded and open minded.
- 1:18So give a call 879-9426. Yeah, two weeks from Tuesday,
- 1:23folks. Two weeks from Tuesday.
- 1:25We're going to decide who's going to get the Republican and
- 1:28Democrat nomination for governor.
- 1:32We're going to decide who's going to get the second district
- 1:36nomination for Congress. I think the Democrats have 3
- 1:39candidates running against Governor LePage, former Governor
- 1:43LePage, and I'm not sure who else is on the primary.
- 1:47I guess we get Senate race going.
- 1:50Really just two candidates I think shaping up for that.
- 1:53There might be another Democrat candidate running against Graham
- 1:56Platinum, but he certainly got, I think got that secured.
- 2:00So give a call 879-9426 and give us some of the predictions or
- 2:07you're who you, who you, who you backing.
- 2:09At this point, we're pretty late in the race.
- 2:11I've honestly been agnostic right from the get go.
- 2:14I said I just knew instinctively the the lineup of candidates had
- 2:20some really comprehensive political teams and strategist
- 2:25behind them and with them and the pretty much the construction
- 2:31of the packs that were going on. I just knew it was going to be
- 2:34dirty, dirty politics down the stretch.
- 2:36And it's see, you've seen it emerging with attack ads on TV
- 2:40and mailers and things like that going out, going to get nasty in
- 2:44the next couple of weeks. You see it, I don't think any of
- 2:47us like it, but if it didn't work, they wouldn't do it.
- 2:51It's awful to say. So I, I just stayed to say I'm
- 2:55going to wait until voting day to make my final decision, which
- 2:59is pretty unusual, but I just want to see what does get
- 3:04emerged. You know what, what you can look
- 3:06at is truth, truthful opposition research or not, you know, it'll
- 3:12be up to us to determine that. But I I want to wait until and
- 3:17see who the last person standing is.
- 3:19We got Mike calling from hops. Well, Mike, welcome to inside
- 3:22Main. Well, you.
- 3:24Better shape up today the company commanders in there.
- 3:28She just took off it. Yeah, it's always sit up.
- 3:30Straight sit up. Straight you.
- 3:32Understand. She's always a pleasure.
- 3:35I I'm I'm lucky we've been I'm married, Donald, 38 years, I
- 3:38think or more. But just like, again, we're
- 3:40going to jump, jump in the cockpit of that Cessna and, you
- 3:44know, take off the Rangeley. And we just we've had, we've had
- 3:47a pretty extraordinary run together.
- 3:48And couple of just ordinary. I should speak for myself.
- 3:51She's she's not just ordinary, but I am and raised their four
- 3:56children in her hometown. And hey, Mike, I tell people, I
- 3:58say, hey, we didn't, we didn't go far in life.
- 4:01We're like 2 miles from where we grew up, but we're happy.
- 4:04The girls got the patience of a St., simple as that.
- 4:08Yeah, she's pretty. Speaking of that, I wanted, I
- 4:11wanted to, I wanted to thank you and Chrissy and everybody at
- 4:15Moody's Collision for the donations, the Veterans Forward
- 4:20fundraiser the other day. Yeah, thanks, Mike.
- 4:22You know, I'm glad to you you're the one that reached out because
- 4:25you can't keep track of everything going on.
- 4:26And you've always been that stalwart, you know, you know
- 4:29where to. You know who buttons the push
- 4:31when you need to. You're you're that guy.
- 4:34Well, you know, I knew you were busy with the scholarship thing,
- 4:37so I figured I'd give you a little boot in the butt, that's
- 4:39all. What did I say?
- 4:41I I got to listen to my agent. Yeah, there you go.
- 4:47So let's not all forget what this holiday is really all
- 4:51about. It's about the people who gave
- 4:54the ultimate sacrifice, you know?
- 4:58And there was plenty of them, you know, So, you know, this
- 5:03touches the families usually deeply in a holiday.
- 5:08And my phone lights up like crazy.
- 5:11You know, they all just want to. They just want to talk, you
- 5:15know. And so, you know, if you have a
- 5:19friend out there who's, you know, relative was killed in
- 5:23action in any conflict, you know, reach out to him and say
- 5:28thank you. Yeah.
- 5:30Go visit, go visit a cemetery, even just walking around a
- 5:33cemetery. If you don't have a loved one
- 5:34that was in service or, or lost their life in service, you can,
- 5:37you can, they do a great job of, of marking the, you know, the
- 5:41graves and it's I, I, my mum, mum and dad both are buried
- 5:46right on our on New Bolton Rd. where we live.
- 5:49And I, I go in and walk around on occasion, Mike, and it's
- 5:53just, man, I just get like, I get in a little goosebumps right
- 5:56now talking about just seeing the, the, and I know a lot of
- 5:59the people that are there, like, you know, I've lived in Gorman,
- 6:01my wife and the generational families that have been there
- 6:05have been buried there. And it's, it's, it just brings
- 6:07back a lot of wonderful memories and makes you appreciate, like
- 6:11you said, Mike, the, the people that, that went and serve, not
- 6:14having any idea what they were signing on for when they did,
- 6:18you know, but they, they stuck with it and, and they, they had
- 6:22that band of brothers that you experienced, Mike, that there's
- 6:24no, nobody left behind. Well, you know, everybody should
- 6:27try, if possible, to make it down to DC, not to see the
- 6:33politician, right, but to go but go over to the National Mall.
- 6:40They should have their own graveyard.
- 6:41They should watch in a while. They shouldn't be mixed in
- 6:44there. In the old days they used to
- 6:47you. Know in the new yard.
- 6:49The bone yard is right, but yeah, this you could have see
- 6:52the national monuments, you know, the World War 2 memorial,
- 6:57Vietnam Veterans Memorial. You know, when you get down
- 7:00there and you walk around the mall, it's, you know, it's
- 7:02amazing when you look at the sacrifice that's going on to
- 7:07make sure we remain free, you know?
- 7:11Yeah, I you know Mike and I know you know Derek, but Derek Volk.
- 7:14Volk Packaging you know obviously not comparing that to
- 7:17talent, but you know, he he did a beautiful memorial wall down
- 7:21there at boat packaging in Biddeford.
- 7:24I'd encourage anybody to go and and there's the names of the
- 7:27main fallen and grave. They, I had actually people that
- 7:31had served son-in-law house Danielle's husband's of, of
- 7:36combat veteran Mike. He he did a tour in Afghanistan
- 7:38and yeah, I had his name. He, he's a humble just like you.
- 7:42He doesn't want no recognition. He doesn't want to talk about
- 7:44what he did of, you know, anything but he I had, I had
- 7:47Derek engrave his name on there. I just felt like that
- 7:51obligation. So like you're saying, veterans
- 7:53are amongst the most humble, unassuming.
- 7:55Leave me alone. I, you know, I did my thing
- 7:57because like people in the so you, like you said, you have to
- 8:00reach out, you have to connect and you have to be the, you
- 8:03know, it's kind of be that friend, you know that that's
- 8:07there for him. Yeah, 3/4 of the time it's just
- 8:11listening, you know, it's not just giving advice, it's
- 8:15listening because you can. You know, when they're having
- 8:18real problems, they have to reach out.
- 8:20A lot of times they can't reach out to the family, you know,
- 8:24they just don't know how to. They don't want the family to
- 8:27think they have an issue, you know?
- 8:29But usually when they have someone they can reach out to
- 8:32makes a world of difference. I know there's a felt Roger
- 8:36Moore sat down the Sanford Spring Vale areas is a is a just
- 8:39a just a really wonderful friend.
- 8:41I think Roger's got to be close to 90 and, and his family's long
- 8:45time in that area. And he called, that was a few
- 8:48years ago now. And he was having a hard time
- 8:50getting through to the Collins office.
- 8:52And they had cut funding or there was some, I don't think
- 8:54they cut the funding, but there was a change in who was running
- 8:57the program. So they, they weren't receiving
- 9:00jackets and coats and blankets and things like that.
- 9:03It dried right up. And, and, you know, we got in
- 9:05touch with the Collins office and they, they pretty quickly
- 9:09get that back in place. So yeah, like yourself, Mike,
- 9:12there are other ambassadors like Mike Hall in other communities.
- 9:17Thank goodness. This is what Veterans Forward is
- 9:20all about. See, they don't, they don't buy
- 9:23you cars, they don't do things like that.
- 9:26But if your car needs to be fixed, they fix your car.
- 9:29If you need to get oil, they get you know that it's what we call
- 9:34the small things. That's right.
- 9:35You know, that's that's what can trip the switch with somebody.
- 9:38You're right, it's. The immediate that the the
- 9:42government programs can't they're just not constructed to
- 9:45to no, I mean, it goes without saying, right, the bureaucratic
- 9:49who are here to help you. But no, that's right, Mike, I'm
- 9:52glad you mentioned that veterans forward because they they were
- 9:54on on the end and talking about how they can just write the
- 9:58check, you know, is for a crisis, an immediate crisis,
- 10:02small amounts, you know that. But that's what that's what they
- 10:06need it when they need it. They can't wait six weeks.
- 10:10They go down into the homeless encampments and look for
- 10:12veterans they can help. And, and not only that, they've
- 10:16helped quite a few civilians too, you know, So I, they're a
- 10:21great organization. So they might go to people now.
- 10:23You know, when we got issues, you know, I'm semi retired.
- 10:28Yeah, you. Know more than most people full
- 10:31time. When I signed on for this
- 10:34mission, they didn't tell me it was a long.
- 10:36Time Mission. So all right.
- 10:40Mike, thanks. Thank you.
- 10:41Guys, have a great Memorial Day. You too, Mike, and thank you.
- 10:46Yep. We got Bob calling from
- 10:48Portland. Bob, welcome to Inside Main.
- 10:50How you doing, Bob? Great.
- 10:52Sean, how are you? It's good to hear your voice,
- 10:54it's been a while. Well, it's always good to hear
- 10:56yours. And of course, everybody loves
- 10:58Mike. Kidding me, I love listening to
- 11:01that man, he informs us every weekend.
- 11:04God bless our troops, past and present and their families.
- 11:08Look what they did for us, for our freedom.
- 11:11And here we have a two party system where one party is in
- 11:15complete betrayal of our constitution, and that's the
- 11:18Democratic Party. They should be renamed the
- 11:20Progressive Party because that's what they are.
- 11:23And you know what a progressive is?
- 11:25It's a socialist aspiring to become a communist.
- 11:28And surprise, surprise, we have a candidate running for office
- 11:33who said when he got older he became a communist.
- 11:37I believe him. He proclaimed himself an Antifa
- 11:41super soldier and you want to elect him and send him to
- 11:45Washington to serve you and I? I don't think so.
- 11:49He has no respect. None.
- 11:52My outrageous, I'm sorry, my Bob.
- 11:54How does like, I'm not a psychologist.
- 11:58I'm not, but I, I, these are the things that I really, you know,
- 12:02go through my mind. It's like, OK, you take someone
- 12:04like Graham Plattner and you look, if you just look at him
- 12:08for who he is, right, and how we grew up and how he's his
- 12:11opinions and his, his values were shaped as a young man and,
- 12:16and now as an adult or whatever. Now he's running for office.
- 12:20I, I just and, and what the appeal and the attraction.
- 12:23Everybody's flocking to the sky and I and I'm looking at it and
- 12:27I'm really trying hard to figure out, OK, how did these
- 12:31individuals become so desperate, you know, to, to to support
- 12:35someone That's so, you know, how did I, I haven't figured that.
- 12:40Out rule supreme. In this state, ignorance rule
- 12:44supreme. We have a mainstream media that
- 12:46refuses to inform. We have the main wire.
- 12:49That's it. The main wire is out there
- 12:52actually informing citizens with pertinent truth.
- 12:56Hello and and to have a man like this.
- 13:00Bob, how's this going to shake out?
- 13:01Give it give us your prognosis there on, you know, head to head
- 13:04against Collins. What's I know it's a long ways
- 13:07away falls an eternity, but what do you think?
- 13:09How are Maine people going to come down on this election?
- 13:16Well, if you've got a brain and common sense, you're going to
- 13:18vote for Susan Collins because she has respect for the
- 13:21Constitution. She has respect for the citizens
- 13:24of Maine. She has proven that over and
- 13:26over again. She knows policy.
- 13:28She knows how to write laws. This guy is a clown.
- 13:33He's a complete clown. Look Pete headset.
- 13:38They, they censured him because he had a Christian symbol on his
- 13:42chest. Yet this guy has a Nazi symbol,
- 13:45an s s symbol on his chest and he knew it was an s s symbol.
- 13:50The artist that drew it on his chest told himself, and he knew
- 13:54it. He said for 17 years no one said
- 13:56a thing. Well, guess what this man does?
- 14:00He is full of hate. He's full of hate.
- 14:04And this progressive Democratic Party is full of hate.
- 14:07Look what they have done to this state.
- 14:10Look what Mills has done. She's more than doubled, doubled
- 14:14our taxes in this state. She's raised every fee, every
- 14:18fine, every 4-4 but she can. And it's just she's not giving
- 14:22anything back to the people. The greatest threat to America
- 14:26today, we have $39 trillion of debt, soon to be 40.
- 14:31Are you kidding me? We have got to cut spending.
- 14:34That's the only solution. You have to cut spending.
- 14:37You have to cut your debt. And guess what?
- 14:40This country will survive. But if you don't.
- 14:42Do that. I appreciate you calling in.
- 14:44It's always good to hear your voice and your passion.
- 14:46And you don't you know, you've been we've been we've been we've
- 14:50known each other for a long time.
- 14:51And it does. It hasn't diminished a bit.
- 14:53Bob, you just fired fired up. But sure, when I first met you,
- 14:56I love it. Really appreciate you calling in
- 14:58and and I know I listen to love it as well.
- 15:02We got Kelly calling from Gorham.
- 15:04Kelly, welcome to Inside Main. Hi, good morning.
- 15:08Now if, if, if you're running for office, I think as you are,
- 15:12I, I put that offer out to any of the candidates that want to
- 15:15call in. So if you could just let our
- 15:18listeners know, Kelly, what office you're running for and a
- 15:21little bit about you. District One O 8 Gorham House of
- 15:25Representatives Oh and a little bit about myself.
- 15:29Oh say I'm a business owner, mother of five, small business
- 15:32owner in the town of Gorham and and currently on the Gorham Town
- 15:36Council. Kelly I I'm so glad you called.
- 15:40What do you I know you've, you're close to the action.
- 15:43You know, there's nothing anymore political like the
- 15:45politics is local, right? And you're on the council and
- 15:48you you're dealing with Amazon, you're dealing with everything.
- 15:51What are you hearing as it was applied to you like getting you
- 15:55into at the State House level? What do you what's the biggest
- 15:58thing that you feel that the voters, the taxpayers are really
- 16:01talking about right now? Just the, the well, the tax is 1
- 16:07and how everybody's being pretty much taxed to death and that
- 16:14there's just no, there's leadership, but it's all one
- 16:17sided, you know, just. Well, it is.
- 16:20I mean, that's a fact, right? That the the Democrats control
- 16:23the House, the Senate, the governorship, state, Secretary
- 16:26of State, Attorney General PUC. Yeah.
- 16:30Correct, correct. And it's, it's their their
- 16:33taxes, everything and they just can't do it anymore in a local
- 16:38level. I am also a real estate agent
- 16:41and have had to sell 2 houses in the last year and a half for
- 16:44people that cannot can no longer afford their taxes in Gorham and
- 16:48I'm sure this is happening everywhere.
- 16:50Yeah, especially just greater Poland that the southern Maine
- 16:54and again that Maine association, they can't wait to
- 16:58do those comparisons and, you know, compare against, you know,
- 17:00Falmouth or Scarborough or Cape, you know, saying, oh, we're in
- 17:04the middle of the pack. Yeah, you're comparing.
- 17:06Yourself. We.
- 17:06Don't have? We don't have waterfront in
- 17:09Gora. The pond out in front of the
- 17:12show up. I don't if that's.
- 17:13Well sure, I've got one down back so.
- 17:16Sure. I don't dare say it.
- 17:17They'll be taxing us on that. I know.
- 17:20Well, Kelly, I, I appreciate you calling in and and more
- 17:23importantly, I appreciate you putting yourself out there.
- 17:25I know is not easy and that we are in a toxic political
- 17:29environment, right? I've never seen it this bad.
- 17:31It's it's. Horrible.
- 17:32It's mean, it's hateful. It's you got to have a backbone
- 17:37and you got to have a clear path or they're going to they're
- 17:40going to run all over you. So I'm here.
- 17:44I know you well enough to know that that's not going to happen.
- 17:46So I appreciate your call and you certainly got our
- 17:48endorsement. Kelly Dearborn for House one O 8
- 17:51in Gorham. Thanks for calling, Kelly.
- 17:54Great. Thank you.
- 17:55See ya. Bye.
- 17:57Yeah, Kelly's on the on the town council as well.
- 17:59We get a lot of like everybody, you get controversial projects
- 18:06and issues that are going on. We got a school budget that's
- 18:08coming up. We're going to vote on I think
- 18:10Tuesday, excuse me, Tuesday of the primary couple weeks.
- 18:14And I think that just crested 6 million, $60 million.
- 18:17I mean, think about that I hometown Gorham, $60 million to
- 18:21run the school department. And, and then again, you got to
- 18:24look back and just, it's tough because everybody's doesn't
- 18:28remember, you know, like what happened 2 weeks ago, let alone
- 18:31a couple years ago. But you know, that was the big
- 18:33push to bring education funding, state funding to 55%.
- 18:37That was the big push. We're going to lower and take
- 18:40the burden off of property tax owners.
- 18:42That was, that was their shtick. We're going to use this
- 18:48additional funding to fund schools at the local level,
- 18:52which will prevent the increases and your local property taxes.
- 18:58Well, I don't know if they if they didn't get the memo on that
- 19:01or if I didn't. I just don't.
- 19:04It's hard to describe being that far off on a, on a, on a
- 19:08promise, you know, a campaign promise or a political promise,
- 19:12because nothing could be as it turns out, nothing could be
- 19:15further from the truth. It's just absolutely it, it's
- 19:20almost like it, it just fanned the flames of increases and, and
- 19:23now, you know, with the, the added family leave Act that hits
- 19:27all, you know, that hits every municipality.
- 19:29They're all, you know, the school teachers or whatever,
- 19:33that's all going to get funded at the local level.
- 19:35That half a percent that they didn't budget for.
- 19:37So that's going to drive up property taxes.
- 19:40It's, it's 70 or 80% of your tax school subsidy is payroll is
- 19:49people, you know. So if you're talking 75 or 80%
- 19:52of the budget being people, it's pretty tough to, to cut the
- 19:56budget without looking at staff. So we'll be right back with
- 20:00Kenny Chinkat running for Senate and Wyndham.
