  SPEAKER_00: Hey, glad you're here.

SPEAKER_00: This is Profit Points, and I'm Megan Schwant, your accounting sidekick and certified Profit First Professional in Fix the Snex Advisor.

SPEAKER_00: If you're a small business owner who wants to actually understand what is happening in your business financially, not just survive it, but genuinely get it, you're in the right place.
• 0:20
SPEAKER_00: Every episode covers one concept, uses real numbers, and ends with something you can actually do.
• 0:26
  SPEAKER_00: That's the deal.
• 0:27
  SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about today's topic.
• 0:31
SPEAKER_00: Culture gets talked about a lot, but most business owners still think it's only about perks, pizza parties, or having a fun vibe.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_00: The truth, culture shows up in the hard moments.
• 0:44
SPEAKER_00: Deadlines, mistakes, feedback, and trust.
• 0:48
SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about how to create a team that actually cares.
• 0:53
SPEAKER_00: Not because they have to, but because they feel connected, clear, and supported.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: I'm Megan Schwein, your accounting sidekick, and this is the Profit Points Podcast, where we talk about building profitable businesses that actually work for your life.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_00: Much like the importance of our numbers, hint hint, culture exists, whether you design it or not.
• 1:17
SPEAKER_00: The thing is, is that if you don't intentionally shape culture as a CEO, it defaults to things that you don't want, like stress, confusion, and quiet resentment, and maybe even some quiet quitting.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_00: Now is a great time to evaluate.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_00: Are you cultivating an intentional culture?
• 1:39
SPEAKER_00: Is the culture that you have created, whether it's been intentional or not, something that's gonna carry you forward or is it gonna weigh you down?
• 1:50
SPEAKER_00: Most culture issues I see aren't about attitude, they're about leadership clarity.
• 1:57
SPEAKER_00: And I can say all of this from very personal experience in building a firm over the last 12 years.
• 2:05
SPEAKER_00: All right, so how does this tie back to profit points and profitability?
• 2:09
SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm so glad you asked.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_00: How our people show up, the way that they represent our brand, the way that they interact internally, externally, and how efficient they operate all impact our profit and all get affected by our culture.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: Drop me a comment on what you think about this topic, and if you think that how our culture impacts our profitability.
• 2:38
SPEAKER_00: But let's get into it about how three ways to make culture shifts intentionally in your business.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_00: So the first one is culture is built in the small moments, how you respond to mistakes sets the tone.
• 2:53
  SPEAKER_00: Do you get angry?
• 2:55
SPEAKER_00: Do your does your team feel belittled or empowered?
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: How you communicate expectations often matters more than how you communicate.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: Did I say that right?
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: How you communicate expectations matters more than how often you communicate.
• 3:13
  SPEAKER_00: There we go.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: Calm, consistent leadership builds psychological safety.
• 3:19
SPEAKER_00: We want our team members to feel safe.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_00: We want them to feel okay with bringing concerns to us, with communicating issues before they become issues.
• 3:29
  SPEAKER_00: So do a self-check.
• 3:31
SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself, how do I usually react when something goes wrong?
• 3:37
  SPEAKER_00: Leadership's a lot about is a lot about self-checks.
• 3:42
  SPEAKER_00: All right.
• 3:43
SPEAKER_00: So culture shift number two is recognition beats motivation.
• 3:47
  SPEAKER_00: People don't disengage because they're lazy.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_00: They often disengage because they feel invisible or they don't know what their expectations are.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_00: But we're gonna focus on recognition with those one.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_00: Recognition doesn't need to be big or public, specific appreciation creates loyalty.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_00: So don't just make it a broad thing.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_00: Look at those small moments.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: I noticed how you handled that client.
• 4:12
  SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
• 4:13
SPEAKER_00: You did great on this project or with that response.
• 4:16
  SPEAKER_00: Good job.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: That follow through really helped the team.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_00: Make it a point to point out all those small wins and accomplishments or attitudes.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_00: By doing this, you reinforce a culture of excellence and promote a space that feels good to show up in.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_00: Culture shift number three is that consistency creates trust.
• 4:39
SPEAKER_00: Culture breaks when expectations expectations change depending on your mood or stress level.
• 4:46
  SPEAKER_00: Predictability equals safety.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: Teams perform better when they know what to expect from you, when they know what their job requires and what the expectation is.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_00: I know I know that this is this can be really hard.
• 5:02
SPEAKER_00: I've been on my own personal healing and growth journey for a while now.
• 5:06
SPEAKER_00: And I've definitely come to learn that my bad day can be communicated.
• 5:11
SPEAKER_00: I like to share it.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: I like to be transparent because I am just that type of person.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_00: If I'm having a bad day or I had a rough night, I'll tell my team.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: But I have to be careful how it shows up, how I then act or react to that fact.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_00: You know, I can say I'm tired, but I gave myself, you know, I drank my water, I ate breakfast, I made sure that I moved my body, whatever it might be.
• 5:35
SPEAKER_00: You got to lead from the top down.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_00: Um, so working on myself, leading that way promotes trust.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_00: It promotes accountability and predictability for my team and also for myself.
• 5:50
  SPEAKER_00: All right.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_00: So we went through the three culture shifts.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_00: Build a culture in the small moments, recognition beats motivation, and consistency creates trust.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about how to take action because the action is where it matters, right?
• 6:05
SPEAKER_00: So create some simple rhythms for yourself.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's weekly check-ins with your team.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_00: How do those get set up?
• 6:12
SPEAKER_00: They don't have to be long, but be very intentional.
• 6:15
  SPEAKER_00: That's the thing.
• 6:16
  SPEAKER_00: Intentional action consistently, right?
• 6:18
  SPEAKER_00: Is what creates change.
• 6:20
SPEAKER_00: You also want to make sure that you're very clear on priorities.
• 6:24
  SPEAKER_00: What are the priorities?
• 6:26
SPEAKER_00: How are you being specific and clear enough?
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: Telling people to get things done ASAP means something different for everybody.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_00: So if you need something done, make sure you're giving a day and a specific time.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_00: That is setting clear expectations and priorities.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_00: And then create honest feedback loops.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_00: How are you connecting with your team members to make sure that they're clear, to make sure they're supported, to make sure that they are on track?
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: And if not, use that as an opportunity to help coach them.
• 6:57
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, as a CEO, you do have to coach your employees as an operations manager, as a leader, you have to coach the people that are under you in some way, shape, or form.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_00: So creating honest feedback loops provides you the opportunity to understand where you need to show up better and also how to help them show up better as well.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_00: Culture isn't about being liked, it's about being trusted.
• 7:24
SPEAKER_00: And when somebody can trust you, they automatically like you too.
• 7:28
SPEAKER_00: So some things to think about.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_00: What behaviors do you reward?
• 7:34
SPEAKER_00: What behaviors do you tolerate?
• 7:36
SPEAKER_00: And what behavior do you model?
• 7:40
SPEAKER_00: As you close out this year, remember your culture is one of your biggest profit drivers.
