- 1:19time now for Pat Novak for Hire and today's episode Rita molloy at Novak or
- 1:32Hire. Sure, I'm Pat Novak for hire. That's what the sign out
- 2:15in front of my office says, Pat Novak for Hire. Down on the
- 2:20waterfront in San Francisco, billing doesn't mean much. Everybody's got the same act.
- 2:28They're all out to turn a fast buck. And when you're in business
- 2:30down here, everything but murder is a parlor trick. Once in a while,
- 2:36your eyelids get sore from winking it too much. But it's a living
- 2:40You get to meet the best people in town. There's only one hooker.
- 2:46You're able to wake up some morning dead because around the waterfront you don't need
- 2:51a Union card for trouble. It sneaks up and pause you like a wet
- 2:55ghost. I found that out when I'm at Bruno's Weiss. I closed up
- 3:02early Tuesday night and I went home to catch up on last month's sleep.
- 3:07I don't know how long I was in bed, must have been about eleven.
- 3:13When I woke up, the room was dark and as stale as last
- 3:16year's Christmas candy. I had the goofy feeling that somebody was in the room
- 3:22with me. I was breathing kind of hard, and I stopped to have
- 3:25a listen. Somebody was sitting on my bed. Either that or the landlord
- 3:30had put in an echo. I listened again. Hello Novak, you're a
- 3:38mixed up friend. I pay the rend here. Get your hands away from
- 3:40the light, Novac. Just be a good boy and you can collect your
- 3:45old age pension. Oh look, I'm not crazy about waking up a stranger
- 3:49sitting on my bed, especially if they got baritone voices, and I say
- 3:51your piece and beat it. Don't get jumping, mister. When your eyes
- 3:54get used to the dark, you're going to see a gun about the food
- 3:58away from your nostrils. I want the keys to your boat, Novak.
- 4:02Get them in the morning at twenty five bucks a smell. I want them
- 4:05now. Just tell me where they are. I'll do the rest. Don't
- 4:09get big hearted. I don't want chaddaring cocktails. I want those keys.
- 4:15Unless you want your face to look like a rump rost, you'll start talking.
- 4:19The keys in the bottom drawer of the desk. That's the boy.
- 4:25I'm gonna borrow your boat a while. You get it back by noon tomorrow.
- 4:31There's the boat keys. Two of them are the rest open the front
- 4:36door of the US Mint. Sorry, I can't stay around, Novack.
- 4:40You sound like a card slip tight noway, this will have to do for
- 4:46a lulla by. He didn't even give me time to pick a dream.
- 5:02I stretched out on the floor as dead as a Philadelphia nightclub. I don't
- 5:06know how long I stayed out of the ballgame. Must have been a couple
- 5:11of hours, because when the phone rang it was past midnight. I reached
- 5:15over to pick it up, but my hands were as steady as a maple
- 5:18leaf and a hurricane, and my head was big enough to sell to the
- 5:21pound. I finally found it in the dark and started talking Hello, Hello,
- 5:28No, that this is Joe paus down a pinnip You awake, Sure,
- 5:34groggy, it's a sedative. What's on your mind? One of your
- 5:38boats just dripped it in. Guess what I don't have to it's smashed up,
- 5:44and you want to offer me fifty bucks salvage. Hey, that's right,
- 5:46No bag, you psyche. I'm a patsy. You mean some gun
- 5:49still barrowed the boat a couple of hours ago, came in here. It
- 5:53told me a bedtime story and took the keys. You better hop right down
- 5:56here. It'll keep Joe. No, I won't hurry up, or you'll
- 5:59run it that heat with homicide. There's a bad guy in the boat.
- 6:03It must be my playmate. I don't know. I didn't say, would
- 6:08you better grab a cat and get on down here. There's gonna be a
- 6:10lot of questions. Sure, if you made any good answer, save a
- 6:13couple from me. From now on, there was no waste motion. I
- 6:25knew that if homicide was on the case, that meant inspector Hellman. He's
- 6:29a real nice guy if you like his type. I had to do something
- 6:32soon. If I didn't, I'd have about as much chance as a pound
- 6:35of liver at a cat show. So I jumped into some clothes and I
- 6:40was starting out of the apartment when I missed my wallet. The keys were
- 6:44attached, and that gunstil had taken the whole works. I began to get
- 6:48mad. For seventy bucks, you can get a Scotch hangover instead of the
- 6:51kind I had, and if you're lucky, a couple of good memories.
- 6:56So when I drew up at Peer nineteen, it didn't look like the sunny
- 6:59side of this street. Joe Powers was waiting for me. You got the
- 7:05first m Patsy, homicide hasn't showed yet. Full of luck tonight? Where's
- 7:11the boat right over here? Lots of fog tonight on, Joe, you're
- 7:16walking on it? Well, that is, how's your insurance, Patsy?
- 7:26All right, except I'm not carrying any on that dead guy? Who is
- 7:29he? Joe? Oh no, he's your passenger. You roll him,
- 7:31all right, give me a hand, No push him over? On the
- 7:33other side. Well you so I can get him the pocket. See's the
- 7:36same guy that took the keys. I don't know if he is. He
- 7:39never looked lovely here. Nothing in this pocket. This one's empty except for
- 7:46a comb. You sure spent my seventy bucks in a hurry. Must have
- 7:49thrown in the wallet for a night camp. No identification. You should have
- 7:55bought a scorecard. Hey, hey, here on the floor, Let me
- 8:00see that Joe, Room four to twenty five, Royal Arms Hotel. Who
- 8:03is it? That's a dive down on Turk Street. Well, say hello
- 8:07to homicide for me. Well, you're not right the night, no vank.
- 8:09I'm not gonna stay around here. They'll pick me up faster than a
- 8:13gin fizz. What am I gonna tell anything? You like? Joe,
- 8:15shift in a free wheeling and let him follow. But I'm not gonna hang
- 8:16around for a pinch. I won boat in seventy bucks. Short, tell
- 8:20it to homicide. I don't like manual labor that much. See you later.
- 8:33I started for the Royal Arms Hotel, and on the way I picked
- 8:35up the only honest guy I know, a bottle baby by the name of
- 8:39Jack o'madigan. He's a good man, except he thinks it's a waste of
- 8:43the taxpayer's money to put alcohol in torpedoes. I hauled him out of the
- 8:48hunt Room bar and we walked down the street to the Royal Arms Hotel.
- 8:52It was the perfect spot for a missionary. A lobby looked like the first
- 8:56act of rain. There was a pinball machine in one corner, a couple
- 9:01of last year's girls and this year's slacks, and a bleary eyed little night
- 9:05clerk. He looked like a well groomed laundry bag, and he gave us
- 9:09the fish eye as we started upstairs. Groom four twenty five was down at
- 9:13the end of the hall. Chocolate didn't care if we ever got there.
- 9:18PETSI, we have no business coming up here. We're in search of fool's
- 9:22gold or in search of my seventy bucks exactly. I view you as my
- 9:28penance, Patsy, the sackcloth for a misprint life. If you can shake
- 9:31off that buzz, you'll find out I'm in trouble. You'll always be in
- 9:35trouble because you're a Patsy, and you're dangerous because you move in the twilight
- 9:39zone between good and evil without any predisposition toward either one. Yea, all
- 9:45right, here it is for twenty five. Nobody home. Let's go in.
- 9:52It's house breaking. Now. Look, Jocko, I want my seventy
- 9:54bucks. I'm going in, Patsy. Sometimes you terrify me. I think
- 10:00you'd pick the lock to the gates of heaven. I would if they had
- 10:03my seventy bucks. Come on, the guy's dead down in my boat.
- 10:05We won't hurt his feelings. He just snows around a minute and get up.
- 10:13There was a pretty room if you like dead women on your rugs.
- 10:16She was stretched out on a pail of the yellow dressing gown, as quiet
- 10:20as an April morning and twice as pretty. A dull red scar ran across
- 10:24her temple, where somebody had laid an iron shovel. She didn't belong in
- 10:28this hotel because she was wearing a necklace and a bracelet that left a gap
- 10:31in somebody's pocket. And from the ring side she looked all right. Jacko
- 10:37noticed it too. She has lots of character. Yeah, but where's my
- 10:43seventy bucks? She's a nightclub dancer. How do you know? Her picture's
- 10:48plastered all over the wall there. She's the headliner at El Palto, Miss
- 10:52Rita Malloy. Wonder who the guy on the desk is there? Boyfriend?
- 10:56Probably let's get out of here, Patsy. Wait a minute about that dead
- 11:00guy in the boat. Where does he fit in? I'll listen to that
- 11:03one, Novak, Oh, Helman, what happened to the girl? She
- 11:07died? Laughing at you? It's Rita Maloya, piece of change from the
- 11:11l Palato got a hat, Novak. Nope, then you're already. Come
- 11:16on. I'll get your brain lined up and look at her. She's been
- 11:18dead a couple of hours. You're still eligible, Novak. On your way
- 11:20down. You can explain that guy at Peer nineteen or you can't be that
- 11:24dumb Helmet. I'm smart enough to see you peeking over the eight ball.
- 11:28You look like a ten to one shot Novak, and I got my money
- 11:30on you all the way. If you're gonna make this thing add up,
- 11:31you can't do it alone. I'll try. That's what Purpo said. So
- 11:35I don't look good on this one. I'll look worse if I leave it
- 11:35up to you. You couldn't find a hang nail if youknew what hander was
- 11:39on. You got twenty four hours Novak. I'm gonna piece things together,
- 11:41and then I'm gonna make a pinch, pick out a soft spot. Yeah
- 11:43yeah, stay near the phone. If it rings and a man answers,
- 11:48that'll be homicide. Good night. Hellman was right. I looked like a
- 12:05sure bet for the roder Gravia section. I was beginning to run out of
- 12:09silver linings, and I knew it. I didn't have an answer for anything.
- 12:13The guy in the boat was still a stranger, and Rita Malloy was
- 12:16still dead. I was sitting in the middle of a high state game with
- 12:20a pair of trays when we left the hotel room. I had the funny
- 12:26feeling that there was something wrong back there. I didn't know what. I
- 12:31just knew there was something wrong. The way you feel when you pick up
- 12:33the wrong hat and put it on the position of the body. Those pictures
- 12:39on the desk, I didn't know. But there was one detail. It
- 12:41didn't set right well. I told Jocko to hang around headquarters and I started
- 12:46for the l Palateo. It was like all the rest, a little melancholy
- 12:52bar On Mason, a fire trap with a cover charge. The decorps looked
- 12:56like early Franco. The floor show was on as I walk my way up
- 13:00to the bar. Excuse me, please, I'm sorry, lady. Can
- 13:05I get through here? Please? How about a drink? You all right?
- 13:11Dev What do you want? Scotch soda? Water? Water? You've
- 13:26got a nice club here, We like it. Eighty cents too bad about
- 13:31Reading Aloy? Yeah, you don't seem heartbroken about it. I'm not a
- 13:37mother. Eighty cents anything wrong edding? No boys, This guy's crying in
- 13:43his beer about reading Maloy? Oh? How many ryans you own the club?
- 13:50Apiece of it? My name's Novak. Call me Patsy. At the
- 13:52moment the police think I killed read them Aloy when you're going trial, mister,
- 13:56no, I don't. That's why I came down here to find out
- 13:58which one of your people killed her. She was mixed up to her ears
- 14:01with some thick Hudlum. You missed the Novac. No, a guy right
- 14:05out of your set. He came rolling in with a tide this morning,
- 14:07playing rigor mortis all over my boat. Look, Novak, you better go
- 14:11see someone else to tell your troubles too. I'm a busy man, well
- 14:15so am I getting out of a murder rap. You knew her, Ryan,
- 14:18In fact, I got an idea you knew her pretty well. Let's
- 14:20not talk that way about the dead. Your picture splattered all over her apartment
- 14:24where you engaged to her. That's one way of putting it. You better
- 14:26have a big, fat alibi ready for tonight. Homicide's gonna think you killed
- 14:30her. I'm betting on you for the finals, Novak. I don't need
- 14:33an alibi. She was a friend of mine. That's why you need one.
- 14:35People just hate their enemies, but they kill their friends. You better
- 14:39stay out of the public library, Patsy. They're not smart enough to understand
- 14:43epigrams. I'm smart enough to find out where you were from ten o'clock at
- 14:45Hill midnight. Go ahead, circle around the club, but keep a drink
- 14:48in your hand. We want for profit. I didn't get much out of
- 15:01the dorm, and he wanted a first mortgage to talk, but one of
- 15:05the bus boys opened up. He told me that Ryan and the girl had
- 15:09brawled the night before, also that Ryan left the club for about an hour
- 15:13tonight. I put him on the list anyway, but it began to look
- 15:18more and more like a one horse race, and I got one other lead.
- 15:22A clarinet player in the band wanted to harmonize with Fredam Alloy, but
- 15:26there wasn't much else to go on. And then I spotted the gall who
- 15:31had taken Riadam Malloy's job in the show. She was just finishing her number,
- 15:35and so I followed her back to a dressing room and she opened the
- 15:41door. I got a nice, warm feeling, like a melded cheese sandwich,
- 15:45and I was looking around for a rope to hang on. She was
- 15:50pretty, and when she said hello, you knew it was time to send
- 15:54in the varsity. Good evening for some people. You mind if I come
- 15:58in? It's late in the season. I can't be choosy. I'm Pat
- 16:02Novak, I'm Tony Drake. What do I do? Tremble talk? Mostly?
- 16:06Did you know read them aloy around here? That was an occupational hazard.
- 16:10The police think I killed her. Did you know when I got there
- 16:12they were tearing down the goal post. That's too bad. I'd have been
- 16:15very grateful. That's something I'd like to try. Are you switching the topic,
- 16:21mister Novak? Or have I been in the big city too long?
- 16:23I just want to know who killed her? You got any ideas. Nope,
- 16:26how about your boss? Maybe she was getting a little frayed around the
- 16:30edges. How's his temper? No worse than a cobra's. He might have
- 16:34done it, but I doubt it. Anybody else he was putting in a
- 16:37little overtime with a thug, not a big porky guy with a deep voice.
- 16:41I never saw him. I just heard that he was trying. Must
- 16:45have been quite a line anybody else. How about that clarinet player, No
- 16:48play, It was just a salmon swimming upstream. I see. Don't do
- 16:55me a favor with you, Tony. All right, you only get one,
- 16:59so make it a good one. Archilling me for a trip over the
- 17:00hill unless I show up with a fist full of answers. Now, can
- 17:03you give me a list of all I read them Maloy's friends. I can
- 17:07write them all down on a piece of CONFETI I mean everybody close to her,
- 17:10the people around the club here, the people on the outside. I'll
- 17:12pick it up in a half hour at your apartment, at my Yeah,
- 17:15at your apartment. I was just inquiring, not complaining. All right.
- 17:22One other thing, Angel, don't forget to put yourself on that list.
- 17:25Be seeing you fell, it was good to get out of there. When
- 17:40she started walking, George, you you felt like a shovel full of scrap
- 17:42iron on a Pittsburgh blast furnace. And I called up Jocko at headquarters.
- 17:48He didn't seem to be worried about me. He was thirsty. The guy
- 17:51on the boat hadn't been identified yet. The coroner said he died of severe
- 17:55bruises, and that Riada Malloy checked out with a factured skull. Jocko Tony
- 18:00Drake's number, and I started for an apartment. I couldn't have done better
- 18:03with a Laddin's lamp. She had the list and a bottle on hand.
- 18:08I went over the list with her, and then it turned out she had
- 18:11insomnia. The radio was turned down to room temperature. I was working on
- 18:18my fifth drink when the phone rang. He let it ring, pantsy.
- 18:27I better get it, baby. I think you are sissy. No prison
- 18:30power wouldn't look good on me. Hello. Yeah, are you busy?
- 18:37Depends on your point of view. What's up? I am not tearing you
- 18:41away from that list of suspects. Let's have it, Jacko. They just
- 18:45identified the dead guy on your boat. His name is Bruno Schweiss. He's
- 18:51wanted in Miami, Florida. He's a hired gunman. Good now jump over
- 18:55and see Paul stangle at the Chronicle, Morgan, I already have. There's
- 18:59no tie up between Bruno Schweice and Rita Molloy. There's gotta be. Those
- 19:03two killings are tied up like ham and eggs. Helman just got a report
- 19:06from the Harbor Patrol. They found a boy knocked out of place. They
- 19:11figured your boat did it and Bruno got killed in the crash. What does
- 19:15that do to things? Oh, clarifies them enormously. This way, you're
- 19:19going to hang for only one murder. Good night, lover. I knew
- 19:33Jocko was right. Helman could rig me as long as he had only one
- 19:36case to work on. He's a single celled animal, and this was just
- 19:38about big enough to fit into his brain. I left Tony's apartment and I
- 19:42walked over to the l PALATEO must have been about four o'clock in the morning.
- 19:47It was still dark enough for me to kick in a back window without
- 19:49being seen. I headed straight for Manny Ryan's office and I started going through
- 19:52his stuff. It was like trying to separate a ton of salt and sugar
- 19:56dumped in the same bin. I went through most of the drawers, and
- 20:00then the last one I got a hold of something. I grabbed the phone
- 20:03on Ryan's desk, and I called Helman. You. I wasn't sure,
- 20:07but I figured he could try this one on for size anyway, gimme Hellman
- 20:15and homicide. Yeah, they must have put their best men on his trail,
- 20:19because they found him inside a half hour. I'm in Manny Ryan's office.
- 20:23He owns the l Palateo. I just rifled his desk. That's a
- 20:26minor offense for you. I got a hold of the last month's phone bill.
- 20:30Guess what. It's too high. The office put through two calls to
- 20:33key West, Florida the last part of this month, four o'clock. I'm
- 20:36fairly interested to go ahead. Bruno's Weiss hired out as a gunman. San
- 20:38Francisco is a long way from home. Plate. That means somebody sent for
- 20:41him, and you're trying to put the finger on Many Ryan. That's right.
- 20:45That's silver frame you picked up at Riadam Malloy's. Take a look at
- 20:47the guy in it. That's their boyfriend, Manny Ryan. And we'll check
- 20:49on it in the meantime. Keep squirming, Novak, you look pretty.
- 20:52Oh you're a smooth Helman. It's my talk's not going to keep you out
- 20:56of the chair. Novak's stay handy. We've only got to a short extension
- 20:59court. Yeah, well, hello Helman, Hello Loopos. Frank is Jocko
- 21:14Madigan there? Good? Put him on. Huh hello Jocko. Now listen.
- 21:18I'm up at Manny Ryan's place. Yeah, that's right. I'm not
- 21:22sure, but I think that Ryan's My head must have looked like a jackpot.
- 21:37Everybody in town was hitting it. I rolled over and played dead for
- 21:41about five hours. It feels better when you've had a dress rehearsal. I
- 21:45woke up in my apartment. The sun was streaming through the window and hit
- 21:49the bed. I looked like the mussl encounter after a sail. It turned
- 21:53out I was the host and didn't know it. Jocko was sitting at the
- 21:57table having breakfast. The bottle was almost half shot. Good morning, how's
- 22:03the other world? Can't you leave that stuff alone? Do you have at
- 22:10of course I have a headache. Well I haven't, so stopped lecturing me.
- 22:15I get up here. I dragged you here by the heel. I
- 22:18met all the other hucksters on the way. Stop being funny and help me
- 22:21out. I am the victim of a common error. You don't like me
- 22:26because I'm not entertaining when I drink. You don't object to my drinking,
- 22:30you object to my lack of wid Well, it's discouraging to be condemned on
- 22:34moral principle when it's really a flaw in nature. By the way, I
- 22:40think they're going to arrest you for the murder of Rita Maloy. What about
- 22:44Ryan? I have recommended clements. Come on, what about Ryan? You
- 22:48bungled it. By the time Hellman got to him, he had malibi all
- 22:52framed. The calls to key West could have been made by anybody in the
- 22:56club, and Ryan's covered for the time of the murder. How about the
- 23:00others? They look good too. Your girlfriend, Tony Drake was gone for
- 23:06a while the night of the murder. Hellman won't bite. She's just sitting
- 23:10there ready to spring an allibi. That's right. With legs like that,
- 23:12she can dig up a cousin. You better get worried, Patrick. I
- 23:15am. I am the el Palateo is a dead end Street. I don't
- 23:21know where to go from there. That guy Bruno when the boat could help.
- 23:23There's some connection between Bruno's Weiss and read them, Aloy. You're the
- 23:27only connection I can think of. Yeah, Hello, noa, this is
- 23:33Helman. Yeah, you were right about Bruno's Weiss and read them, Maloy.
- 23:37We just went through her safety deposit box. I'll bet you handle the
- 23:40money. She had a clipping on Bruno's Wiss from a Miami paper nineteen thirty
- 23:44seven. Go on divorce action between Sweiss and miss Alga Pryor. Did you
- 23:48look up Alga Pryor? That's where we run out of gas. Nobody knew
- 23:51her, we have no description. Well, how about read them, Maloy?
- 23:52Any dope on her before nineteen thirty seven? I was gonna ask you.
- 23:56You were in the room with her when she died, don't you know?
- 23:59No, I don't. I'm disappointed. I figured you to know a
- 24:02little about her habits. You wrote the book, mister. I figured you
- 24:04for an answer. Yeah, I got one, and you just gave it
- 24:07to me. Helman. Meet me at the El Palateo in a half hour.
- 24:10If you're a real good boy, I'll tell you who killed read them,
- 24:11Aloy, are you going to be there? Yeah, that's all I
- 24:14want to know, Novak. Things were falling into place like a fixed roulette
- 24:26wheel. Right from the first I knew that there was something goofy about the
- 24:30picture and read them Maloy's hotel room. I wasn't sure. I just knew
- 24:33I had something in the back of my mind. I didn't tumble until Hellman
- 24:37tipped the met and then everything was cakes and ale. I sent Jocko up
- 24:41to room four twenty five in the Royal Arms Hotel and I told him to
- 24:45get a description of every dress in the closet. I checked at the desk
- 24:49and I got the name of reading Maloy's cleaners. I ducked over there and
- 24:53I got a list of every dress that she turned in for three months.
- 24:57I met Jocko and we compared the list of dresses. It jibed fine,
- 25:02except for one thing. There was a missing white dress. It had been
- 25:06to the cleaners before, it wasn't there now, and it wasn't in that
- 25:08hotel room. Well. We went over to the l Palateeo to find it.
- 25:14Jacko didn't want to buy this scheme at all. Patsy, I protest
- 25:18the notion of breaking into a lady's dressing room. Stop worrying, will you?
- 25:22She's not gonna be there, then it's futile as well as immodest.
- 25:26Besides, how do you know Rita didn't throw away the dress. I'll give
- 25:30you better than track odds on that one, Jacko. Here we are,
- 25:33Come on. Well, look, you take the closets and find that white
- 25:37dress. I'm going through the desk for grease paint. You should be going
- 25:41through a woman's closet. It's more in the nature of things. Just look,
- 25:45huh, there's enough grease paint here for the Holy Rokoi tribe. Do
- 25:52you find anything? Yes, watch this, Just look for the white dress.
- 25:56Jacko. Hey, what's that corner over here? Hi? Don't she
- 26:02go down here? Look? Well, well it feels good, doesn't it,
- 26:06Jacko? Like a spell of perfect weather. Shame grease paint. It
- 26:10won't take as long to check here. You open a couple of these jars.
- 26:11I don't forget you. Patsy. Hello, Tony, what are you
- 26:15doing? Getting ready to build a fire under you? You're gonna make nice
- 26:18smoke too. I let your better when you were dumb, Patsy you don't
- 26:22look good with a PhD. Put away the gun, baby, Remember this
- 26:26is your second trip to the plate with it won't fit. Don't worry about
- 26:29that. Just talk it over by the door. I'll do better. I'll
- 26:30bring it are. Patsy might take it out. Chump, Patty, stay
- 26:33out of my way. It's your role, baby, Patty. Pappy please
- 26:37stay away from me. Come on, give me that gun, Pappy,
- 26:38please give me that gun. That's all I could do. Yeah, sure,
- 26:51you want to take a look at her, Jacko, put it down
- 26:53on the floor. Yeah, Oh what do you say, Jacko? No
- 27:02dice? Yeah, you can't win them all. Tony, play too rough,
- 27:10Patsy. You still got a good batting average. No vacuum. Hello,
- 27:14Helman, you better make a fast pinch. She do it? Yeah,
- 27:18she got kind of clumsy in the last round, didn't She not at
- 27:22all copper. But they had me coming and going, and you're as far
- 27:27back as I and they don't pick up the option. Let's get out of
- 27:33here, Jacko. I'll check with you later. Helman. Be a good
- 27:36boy, Patsy. I'm gonna miss you. We're getting to be my favorite
- 27:44hobby. Yeah, I know how you were on the distance stuff. He
- 27:51was sure something on the sprints. Yeah, be nice to her copper,
- 27:57she could go on the mud herself. Well it was blackmail, of course.
- 28:25Tony was once married to Bruno's wife. readA Maloy found out and started
- 28:30to squeeze Tony. Well, Tony wouldn't buy that, so she killed readA
- 28:33Maloy in her hotel room. She made one mistake. I didn't tumble until
- 28:40Hellman mentioned a woman's habits, and I knew what was wrong with that picture
- 28:44Back in Maloy's hotel room. It hit me like a discordant note in music.
- 28:48readA Maloy was lying on the floor in a dressing gown, but she
- 28:52was still wearing her bracelet and necklace. Well, when a woman undresses,
- 28:57she always takes her jewelry off first, and then she takes off her dress,
- 29:03readam Alloy. I didn't do that, So I took a flyer and
- 29:06decided that somebody had taken the dress offer and put on a dressing gown.
- 29:11Why, because there was something wrong with a dress. It pointed too much
- 29:15in one direction. Well, it could be a lot of things, but
- 29:21probably grease pain Tony called Bruno ot here he was supposed to use my boat
- 29:25to dump the body, and when he didn't make it, Tony got scared
- 29:29and plugged away the dress. My seventy bucks only would have looked better on
- 29:33a fixed fight. Well, Hellman asked only one question. How did I
- 29:40happen to know that when a woman undresses she always takes off her jewelry first?
- 29:45I must have read it somewhere. The arm Puss Radio Service has just
- 29:59bought you a tep Novak for Hire, starring Jack Webb. Pat Novak is
- 30:03produced by William P. Russon. Jack o'madigan is played by Tudor Owen.
- 30:07Inspector Helman is played by Raymond Burke. Music was composed and conducted by Basil
- 30:11Atwain. Be with us again next week when over most of these same stations,
- 30:15We'll bring you Pat Novak for Hire. Pat Novak for Hire was previously
- 30:44released by ABC, the American Broadcasting Company for listeners in the United States and
- 30:48rebroadcast for our men and women overseas. This is the United States Armed Forces
- 30:52Radio Service, the voice of information and education sessions professionals Welcome back. Given
- 32:07that the show tends to be a bit formulaic, any change in the formula
- 32:13is a noticeable and here we see jock O Madigan coming to the story as
- 32:19kind of early, but mostly it works. Some nice interaction worked in there
- 32:23between Pat Novak and Jocko, and also a pretty clever and authentic clue to
- 32:30wrap up the story. All right, Well, we do have some listener
- 32:37comments and feedback, and this one here is a comment comes from Dave.
- 32:45Love the Pat Novack episodes and look forward to them each week. My favorite
- 32:51part is the put down shared between Novak and Hellman. I'd love to be
- 32:55able to use some of them toward my boss. And at this point we
- 33:00should recommend a note just for legal liability purposes that that's not something we recommend,
- 33:07but there's definitely some cleverness in there, and certainly, I guess for
- 33:13some people listening at the time, there might have even been some Catharsis in
- 33:17it of having Novak tael Off an authority figure, and in many ways,
- 33:23I think the Inspector Hellman character and motif really is the worst police figure in
- 33:32all radio. And one thing that Bring really does try to do is to
- 33:39make the character as bad as possible without making him corrupt, so that listeners
- 33:45would sympathize with what the way Novak talked to him and treated him and generally
- 33:52did a pretty good job with that. All right, Well, that will
- 33:55do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with the adventures of Philip
- 34:00Marlow and then join us back here next Tuesday for another episode of Pat Novak
- 34:06for Hire. In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great
