- 1:11as it is Joe Friday a nice man, what King Kennon teach us about
- 1:15dealing with frailty and others? And much more. The book is also available

- 1:26of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. The original air date August the twenty seventh,
- 1:30nineteen forty nine, and the title is The Eager Witness Get This and
- 1:36Get It Straight. Crime is a Sucker's Road and those who travel had wind
- 1:38up in the gut of the prison of the grave. This started with a
- 1:42man on trial for his life and an a one sitz An eager to testify.
- 1:47But there it was interrupted. And it wasn't until I found a copse
- 1:49in a bubbling bath, gun play in the woods, and lots of blackmail
- 1:53that the real ego witness had a chance to talk. From the pan of
- 1:59Raymond Chandler and the author of mystery comes his most famous character and crime's most
- 2:02deadly enemy. As we present the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, now with Gerald
- 2:19Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's exciting story the Eager Witness
- 2:38to the Superior corn in the State of California and for the County of Los
- 2:40Angeles. Now in session, the Honorable Albert Winston Judge presiding, Everybody rise.
- 2:51It was the case of the people versus the aft arrested never convicted smooth
- 2:54Earl Jernigan sometimes Bookie, charging the first degree with a one f old killing
- 3:00of a kindly gray haired horse trainer named Kurt Hopper, who had once almost
- 3:05been my client. It was the afternoon of the fourth day of the trial,
- 3:08and the prosecutor for the state had already built an almost airtight case against
- 3:13the alleged gambler. When my turn finally came to father substantiate the state's claim
- 3:19that Earl Jernigan did willfully and with malice of falthought take the life of the
- 3:23deceased Kurt Happer. Well, mister Philip Marlowe take the stand. He's a
- 3:35right hand. Can't tell truth, truth about truth. Happy God, I
- 3:38do take your name and occupation, Philip marlow private detechniquet, mister morlow On
- 3:51the morning of the thirtieth day of July last, the day on which the
- 3:53late Kurt Hopper was murdered, were you hired as a private detective by the
- 4:00said mister Harper. I was, And at that time, mister model,
- 4:03did mister Harper state his reason for hiring you? He did want me to
- 4:09act as his personal bodyguard. On the following day, when he planned to
- 4:11drive to San Francisco. Did he say why he needed a personal bodyguard?
- 4:15He did. He told me he was afraid for his life and he refused
- 4:20the gamblers. The man that he drug a certain race horse a week earlier
- 4:25that that gambler had threatened to kill him. I say, i'mus to mollow.
- 4:30Did mister Harper name that gambler? Yes he did. Who was it?
- 4:35Earl Jernigan, thank you? No further question, Johanna, counsel find
- 4:42the defense. Counsel for the defense waves cross examination, your honor, which
- 4:46is his excume? Didn't make sense? No cross examination because from the opening
- 4:53adjective the consul for the defense, a dapper item named Calder who always appeared
- 4:57in French cups, Greg Gabardine and a Kaki uninviting smile had raved rendered and
- 5:01practically spit at each witness the state had presented witness. So the courtroom was
- 5:05left with a tingling impression that Earl Jernigan's attorney had something of a surprise waiting
- 5:11up his legal sleep. Later, when Carler was on his feet and addressing
- 5:15the jury, that something started out fast. Now that the state has taken
- 5:18the trouble to offer so much circumstantial evidence, so much hearsay, rumor conjecture,
- 5:27Now I smash all of that with the testimony of one man, one
- 5:30man known to all of you as an outstanding citizen of the city, a
- 5:33prominent real estate broker had unimpeachable and it's eager to testify, mister Leonard Gates.
- 5:42It worked, landed in each and every lap like a live grenade,
- 5:45and exploded all the way around at once. And when the eminent mister Gaines
- 5:48Gray at the Temples maybe forty five a neat and expensive midnight blue flannel with
- 5:51giant stickman, the match took the stand, and in his own meeting of
- 5:56the board, tone of Voice told the court that Earl Jernigan had spent the
- 5:59end, hire day and night of July thirtieth last with him at his Mallebule
- 6:02Beach home. The prosecuting attorney's joe dropped on his chest and he stirred,
- 6:06dumb day or night did mister Jernigan ever leave my home? And as for
- 6:12the hour of the murder, eight o'clock in the evening, we were having
- 6:15dinner. After that we played gin Rummy until until midnight. I you are
- 6:20sure of that, mister Gaines the hour of your dinner rammy, I am
- 6:25positive, mister Calder, order of the part be fine, I won't any
- 6:34Miss Harvey Hie Hodder. This part is adjourned until tomorrow morning at ten o'clock.
- 6:50Now this gotch you so, mister yeah, I guess so wait a
- 6:58minute, baby, and I think get gonna have a company. Mister Morrow,
- 7:00can I talk to him for a minute. I'm Gailhopper. Yeah I
- 7:03know, but I don't know his Why you're not doing thirty days on a
- 7:08rock pile for that rump is? She just kicked up and caught you like
- 7:11a soft drink. Okanks, all right, just one baby, jack.
- 7:14The judge said he understood and left me off with a short lecture, which
- 7:16is what I had counted on. Oh, I mean all that fireworks and
- 7:20there was planned, not just spontaneous combustion. That's right. I had a
- 7:25halftime. Look, mister Mardel, will you work for me? Oh look,
- 7:29help me prove that mister Lennard Gaines is a line and that Earl Jernigan
- 7:30did kill my father. Take it easy, Gail. It's a big mouth
- 7:33for you know Tomalow. Listen, please, there isn't much time. We
- 7:36got to prove this tonight or never by noon tomorrow. With the outside,
- 7:41the case will go to the jewelry. Okay, what do you want me
- 7:43to do? Take over where I left off. But first let's get out
- 7:46of here, all right, and never mind that drink. Miss Where do
- 7:49we start, honey? With Leonard gaines ex wife Debbie Janson. Here's a
- 7:54snapshot of her. They were divorced about six months ago, mister Marlow,
- 7:58and she wasn't very happy. No made you figure she was your in?
- 8:01Yes, And I was right, mister Marlow. Who took Eves dropping bribery
- 8:07second story work? But I found out plenty I bet you did. Like
- 8:09what? Oh, holdly Gale Light's read like the fact that Debby and a
- 8:13guy called Eugene Mao, you're putting a bite on Gaines for twenty thousand dollars
- 8:18blackmail, mister Morrow, with the payoff schedule to be made some time tonight.
- 8:22Right now, she's staying at the sullen Selfice Screens Lodge out in the
- 8:24valley. Ganes used to go there once in a while. There's right,
- 8:28and why at the whole business there's a lot of Gaines once wrote to his
- 8:31ex wife, no fooling. Uh huh, Well tell me what's that to
- 8:35do with Jernigan's trial and games being a lot? Oh it's green. Now
- 8:39I think there's a connection because yesterday I overheard Gaddy tell this mau he's something
- 8:41about Gaines scheduled appearance at the trial today and he was jerk California drivers,
- 8:50the man behind the wheel, what about him, facet flun hair. I've
- 8:52seen him before. I know he was trying to hit one of us.
- 8:56Oh fine, well that'll keep thanks from getting dull, won't it. Then
- 9:00you're gonna help me? Well now look, I ha ha eh, who
- 9:05could resist you? Baby? Okay, tonight I check in at the lodge
- 9:09at Sunlands Sulfur Springs. Come on, let's get out of here. Ah.
- 9:20It was eight o'clock and almost dark when I reached the foothills of the
- 9:24mountain range that separates the San Fernando Valley from Malay Proper, and turned off
- 9:28onto a narrow dirt road that ran through a twisting gorge, past the moon
- 9:31faced watchman, who asked no questions as he slowly opened a sagging wooden gate
- 9:37faintly labeled Sunland Sulfur Springs, where Mother Nature's remedies bubbled from the earth private.
- 9:43There was another five minutes along the same dirt road, uphill and through
- 9:46thick foliage before I was at a parking space out of my car and walking
- 9:50the last quarter of a mile toward the lodge itself that was spotted with widely
- 9:54separated cottages, also sagging, and each tag cusser and followed by something Spanish
- 10:01and hard to pronounce. Inside the place was cheap ports furniture and occasional threadbare
- 10:05rugs over scarred pine and deserted, except for a sleepy old guy with thick
- 10:11lidded eyes and an accordion wrinkled face, was slouched in a heap behind a
- 10:15sign on the reservation desk the red manage shop no less night manager. When
- 10:20I gave him my name and said that both my rheumatism and I needed a
- 10:24rest, he came to almost room. Eh, mister Marlow, well she
- 10:33can let you have most any one of the cottages. Half of them are
- 10:37empty. Things come slower this time of year. I'm sloking you again.
- 10:41You'll be surprised. How's about CASTI Francisco de Leon Guys of Francisco. Yeah,
- 10:48that'll be fine, mister Sharp, alrighty sure, Now, if you'll
- 10:52just sign the register here, i'll get your key. But yeah, as
- 10:56I signed my name, I checked the guest list quickly, and the next
- 11:01second found what I wanted, Deborah Jensen, and next to that, and
- 11:05in a different hand, her cottage for the night, a casse Rolando de
- 11:11Barondido. That's close enough. Well anyway, it was all I needed.
- 11:16I took the key from mister Sharp a missnomer if havever you heard one,
- 11:18learned the location of my quarters, paid him in advance, and left outside.
- 11:22I turned to my right past a large open bath that smelled like rotten
- 11:26eggs, and talk to itself like a junior vesuvius as more warm self award
- 11:31as equally unpleasant to smell. Bubbled from a pipe in the center. Beyond
- 11:35that was the first cottage, another cassa I couldn't pronounce, and it stayed
- 11:39like that all the way down the line until I reached the second one that
- 11:41showed light. It was the cassa known as Rolando the Barandido. And when
- 11:48I moved closer around to a window that was clean, only I knew that
- 11:52my client had done our eavesdropping well, because in the center of the room
- 11:54and putting on her coat was the ex wife named Debbie, and standing nearby
- 11:58and holding on tight to the cigarett in his hand like it was support.
- 12:01There's what had to be the boyfriend. You're sure that games will go through
- 12:07with this all right for the hundredth time, Eugene, Yes, I'm positive.
- 12:09Can't you understand he has to If it's twenty thousand dollars won't break him,
- 12:15it won't more than bend him a bit. Now, stop worrying what
- 12:18I can't Debbie? Why must you go alone? Now? Why can't I
- 12:22go with you? Eugene? Please, we've been over that. I told
- 12:26Leonard that i'd meet him in town at the Beverly Crest Hotel at ten and
- 12:30alone. He agreed to also be alone except for the month. Rebby.
- 12:35You do handle things well. Come here, darling, I have a kiss
- 12:39for your brilliant Oh please, Eugene, there isn't time. What's the matter?
- 12:43My kiss is losing their flavor at this point. Be a fool.
- 12:48Look it's late, Eugene. It's after nine already. I've got a hurry.
- 12:52Go on, go on, be a good boy and leave that.
- 12:54You shouldn't even be seen together to me when not w it's not smart.
- 13:01Meet me at the Tulip room down and hit eleven as we played and YouTube.
- 13:05We'll have time and reason to relax, twenty thousand bucks worth of reason.
- 13:13Yeah, as mauri Oo's taught the door, I slid away from the
- 13:22cottage and into the shadow of a clump of trees nearby, stayed there as
- 13:26he walked out of sight down the road that led back to the parking space.
- 13:30Then a few minutes later, when Debby picked off the light and left,
- 13:33I moved out of hiding and started slowly after the safe distance until from
- 13:37someplace in the night and ugly snub nosed automatic that belonged to someone blonde and
- 13:41thin faced as a near automobile like ciment, stop me cold? Where are
- 13:46you going? Jack? For rare? I love to walk in the country
- 13:48at night. Okay, I wouldn't know, Jack, I'm sitting boy myself.
- 13:52But as long as that's what you wanted, jake with me, as
- 13:56long as it's whereas good and dark. Now go on that way, oh
- 14:13Jack, that's fine up? Hold it then around and face me. Why
- 14:20so I can watch you pull the trigger and have a mind. Why just
- 14:24okay, turn of these that's better now, one step closer, President,
- 14:31my friends, take before I beat you in the little pieces. Let's have
- 14:35it. Who are you? Who? Do you work for on? What
- 14:37do you want with me? Come on, gunman talk okay, okay,
- 14:41no more. My name's Langley, work for real, Jennikin? Oh yeah,
- 14:46I've been watching you ever since the trial started. Jennikin didn't want you
- 14:50moving in on, which is why you tried to pick me off with a
- 14:52car when I was with Gail hopping this afternoon. How come on? Yeah,
- 14:56yeah, that's why. Now what are you gonna do with me?
- 15:00That time? Being busted? Olivia As is light on your back because I've
- 15:03still got to catch up with a lady before series City Boy in just a
- 15:22moment, the second act of Philip Marlowe, but first, because of the
- 15:26sharp rise in America's birthrate during the war, we face very serious educational crises.
- 15:33Many communities will find that their schools lacks efficient teachers, classrooms, and
- 15:37facilities. Citizens must get together and work for better schools, more teachers.
- 15:43If we want all of our children to have a chance for a good education,
- 15:46we must take action now. Now, with our star Gerald Moore,
- 15:52we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story The Eager Witness.
- 16:07It was strictly hit and run. I pile a Langley into the Manzanita
- 16:11and didn't even wait to see him bounce. Instead, I took off through
- 16:15a gully there was a shortcut to my car, because I knew that Jernigan's
- 16:18Watchdog had nothing to offer compared with the hot headed Debbie Jensen. At the
- 16:22moment, no doubt, was well on my way to the Beverly Crest Hotel
- 16:25and the blackmail rendezvous. There was a cinch to wind up in the final
- 16:27destruction of the letting. That was my theory. But I dropped it like
- 16:33a hot rock. Just as I crossed the path to the sulfur pool,
- 16:41somebody screaming, he's never on the spring. Oh gosh. It was nothing
- 16:49but self affumes in the thick gurgle of the springs until Shop played his flash
- 16:52flight over the pool and we saw and the water that was turning red from
- 16:57blood oozing around the knife, and I like, look, it's miss Johnson,
- 17:02come on popping her hand. Let's get her out of there. Come
- 17:04on, take it easy, now, take it easy. That's it,
- 17:10Debbie. I never should have tried tried. What Who was it, Debbie?
- 17:15Who did this? Who got the letter? Debbie Debbie. Right did
- 17:26she? Did? She pass out? For good minute? She's dead?
- 17:32Oh she? She seemed to be mumbling something about her letter. Did you
- 17:37get what it was the only part of it. The killer apparently took the
- 17:41letter away from her. Believe me, that's bad letter. Watch your letter.
- 17:47Minute. It's probably that pheasant again, that is What are you talking
- 17:52about? Oh? I guess I'm just getting jumpy. Hey, hey,
- 17:56there is somebody. Come on, Pop, sounds sounds luck. He's over
- 18:07there, Marlowe. I can hear him. Oh no, that ain't gonna
- 18:12do any good son, not that brush, It ain't and much more.
- 18:17I wouldn't go any further if I was you, But Papaul, he needs
- 18:18his ten seconds and he can destroy that letter for good well, just to
- 18:22see him. There's a million and one place is a killer can hide in
- 18:25there and lay for you. So yeah, yeah, Pop, Well it's
- 18:30the moment. It's a stalemate. I'd sure have to find out who that
- 18:33snake in the bush is. You know, I've run a peaceful place up
- 18:38until it's getting to be like one of them there movies. The only thing
- 18:42left out is a pussey. Yeah, you're so right. Murders in the
- 18:45night lost letters. It's corny enough without a pussy. Yeah, and my
- 18:49dangerous too. Yeah, I see what you mean. You're ready to h
- 18:56Yeah, I'm ready. I lead you actually the office, my jasper.
- 19:02I don't understand this one bit. Missus Jensen is stabbed to dazz over that
- 19:07letter and then her dame? What is up ahead there? Somebody duck behind
- 19:12that big tree. Keep the chair going, man, walk on up the
- 19:15path. Don't let him know we spotted him. Go on, talk talk
- 19:18Okay, sure I'm saying. I know what I'm saying. Oh applecious Jenny.
- 19:22As quiet as a tool as the old man. Grimly I had led
- 19:26his way up the path. I followed a few feet behind. Want to
- 19:29get even with the tree? I turned suddenly. So three fast steps and
- 19:34well, well the lened gains the unimpeachable citizen themselves standstill, gains a gun.
- 19:42What's the idea by running? And it'll come to you? I suppose
- 19:45you've got a legitimate reason for being here, all thought up. I'm here
- 19:49because I have got a touch of arthritis. I need a treatment night's rest.
- 19:55Writis is no, you're gonna have if I find what I think I'm
- 19:56gonna find in your pockets empty Inbuster. I have them, all right,
- 20:03I'll ave you them. That's better a shop. You're a witness, and
- 20:06I demand that you hy just a minute, mister Gaines, you're in a
- 20:11pretty bad spot to demand anything as our baby. There's a letter we've been
- 20:15looking for. Pick it up, Gaines, pick it up and rad it
- 20:17now. See here there Ganes, read it? Why you're able to?
- 20:22Yeah, my dear Debbie, if I didn't know you so well, i'd
- 20:26resent your stupid accusations. Now look, we've already made our property settlement,
- 20:33as you're well aware, and you'll be a long time finding a court that
- 20:37says otherwise. Now you know where you can go, so why not get
- 20:41started? As ever? Letard? Oh fine, that's is about as incriminating
- 20:47as a lecture on the family meet bill. Shut up? Whose jurisdiction are
- 20:51we under here? Georsh? Why county Sheriff's all things? All right?
- 20:56Call him? Also call you a man out on the highway and have him
- 20:59locked that main gate? Mean gee, yeah, say no, that's a
- 21:02good idea. I'll do it right now. Wait a minute, have you
- 21:04got a gun? Yep? Got a rifle? Been in the family for
- 21:07a year. You use it? Well, yeah, I reckon, I
- 21:11can, well, where are you going out? The round up Langley and
- 21:15be pushing hard to give his boss a star witness here a big helping hand.
- 21:18I want to be in shape to push back. And remember Pop,
- 21:22keep your eye on Gains and out on the phone when you make those calls.
- 21:25I'll see you. The second time that night, I started down the
- 21:33hill and toward the car out, keeping in the shadows and moving slowly this
- 21:36time because it was odds on that Langley had taken everything in and I knew
- 21:41that he'd tried to part my hair with a gun barrel and pulling it Gains
- 21:44out of the gym. He was in the very first chance he had,
- 21:47so I stayed off the paths long enough to have both socks full of burrs
- 21:49when it happened, but not what I expected. It was the shop family
- 21:53blunder busted. It exploded with a blast like a small howitzer. So also
- 21:57for the second time, I turned and ran back up the hill, this
- 22:00time to the office. I got there just as Man had climbing handle the
- 22:03hand up a smoking rifle barrel made it to his feet. Man Man what
- 22:06happened was gaines, I don't know he got away. I guess a shot.
- 22:10What about that he went up there through the room. Oh fine,
- 22:14gosh, I didn't you speke the thing? He just said he wanted to
- 22:18smoke, but he didn't happen to have a match, I know. So
- 22:19you hung your rifle over your arm, stuck both hands in your pockets to
- 22:22find one for him, and that's when he took here. Yeah, that's
- 22:26exactly what happened. How did you know? Never mind, Pop, I
- 22:30made a grab for him, though, Riptys caught about halfway. Oh that's
- 22:34great, that's great. I'm sure. Sorry he got away from all right,
- 22:38don't worry about it. You can't get followed. The gatelocked. Well,
- 22:44I got bad news there too. Hold the gates locked, all right,
- 22:48But there's a back road back wh back road? Right? Yeah,
- 22:55much rough and rocky. But he's fashionable, and anybody's been up here as
- 23:00orphans, mister Gines has sure nobody. Oh great, look, Pop,
- 23:03can't you understand that there was a murder committed here tonight? We had the
- 23:07murder of no butts hell for the oldest gag in the world. Suck it,
- 23:11I turn him over the here and we stop waving that envelope yes,
- 23:15order to see this all right? What is it? Oh? Where'd you
- 23:19get all that loot? Games dropped it when I ript twenty grand it says
- 23:25here on the wrapper something else written here to Casa Rolando the ronde though at
- 23:32ten gossa right pop, that's it. That's the answer. Come on,
- 23:36we gotta get down that back road. And I hurry the shop of the
- 23:47wheel of the pickup truck. We bounced over the pair of sometimes parallel rut
- 23:49studded with stones the size of bowling balls. It was called a back road
- 23:53the better part of two miles before they cut lights and motor and whispered that
- 23:56if Gaines was going to get stuck at all, it was sure to happened
- 23:59in the why I washed just around the next bend. I told him to
- 24:02wait and went ahead on foot. It was right. Games were stuck in
- 24:06more ways than one. His car was up towards hubcaps and sand, and
- 24:08as wallowed up to a stamp compartment and blackmail conducted by his ex wife's murderer
- 24:12with the same leather she'd had the letter. It was Eugene Murray and clenched
- 24:17in his hand was a tetted white envelope, nothing more. I held my
- 24:21thirty eight in close to my side and edged up behind him. Twenty thousand.
- 24:23Now, Mauri, I don't have that much jewel line you're going to
- 24:27pay her that? I don't know. I know because we worked the deal
- 24:33out together. Only she got greedy, tried to double cross me and pull
- 24:37it alone. So you killed her. Yeah, I didn't intend to,
- 24:41but when I found out that she tricked me, I was curious. The
- 24:45first thing that I knew i'd stabbed there. That's enough of that. Just
- 24:51give me the money. You have nothing, you're worried, But listen,
- 24:52Mauri, I tell you you, listen. Games you're in no position to
- 24:56buy. It's better than having your two hundred thousand dollars ambling got exposed and
- 25:00your reputation ruin, doesn't it? Or facing the trigger man Langley if you
- 25:03refuse to alibi for Journigan, isn't it? Or fucking a Pedgieri charge if
- 25:07you do alibi. No, you got yourself in the corner gain So pay
- 25:11all only twenty grand. But I tell you, Maori, I don't have
- 25:15it lying again. No, it isn't don't move, I don't want to
- 25:18here. Leave your hands where they are. I got the twenty grand right
- 25:22here, and it's pretty well ear marked as blackmail payment already. But just
- 25:25to round things out, mariy, I'll take that envelope you've got there.
- 25:27Yes, what do you want this for? Funny man? Because it's no
- 25:32doubt postmark with an hour a date in the location, which, together with
- 25:36brother Gaines's own handwriting, places him out of town on July thirtieth, by
- 25:38time, he swears he was at his Mellible home all day with Jernigan.
- 25:41Right, Gains, smart boy, hunt your marrow. You still got a
- 25:45chance, Gains. You've got a gamble with me. You've got nothing to
- 25:48lose now. I'm with you. Standstill, Buster, So I help me
- 25:49out now, Gaines go, Oh my leg. Were you thinking of going
- 25:56someplace, mister Gaines? Oh I am not going any place, mister Morrow.
- 26:18Well, Gail, the big show is about to start cautably in session
- 26:21in a few minutes, I know, and different from yesterday. Oh you
- 26:26did a swell job, mister Morrow. Gee gee, I don't know how
- 26:30to thank you. Save baby that scale, Lady Justice holds in her hands
- 26:34is in better balance today. It was your hunch and old man, it's
- 26:37Blunderbus did as much to put it there as my running around for the brush
- 26:40itself of springs on. It was the game's line. I didn't know it
- 26:45was as complicated as it was. Now. That's because Debbie Jensen was twice
- 26:48as treacherous as we figured. I still don't understand. How did you know
- 26:52that Eugene Maury had killed Debby? You see, Baby, I overheard her
- 26:56tell Maury that she was going to meet Gaines in the Beverly Crest Hotel at
- 26:59ten for the playoff, but I figured that was a lie strictly for Mari's
- 27:02benefit. When Pop gave me the packet of money Gains a Drop, it
- 27:06had that complicated name of a cabin in the time of the appointment, which
- 27:07was also tan written on it, so I knew the real meeting was scheduled
- 27:11to take place out there. Oh ye, and she was going at the
- 27:15Marlock to the Beverly Crest while she collected the money at self for springs and
- 27:19then beat it alone. That's it, honey. You see, if her
- 27:22cabin had been named something simple like number four and Gaines could have remembered it
- 27:27instead of that cassa Robino del bangadoro or whateburg was he had to write down.
- 27:33You see, well, then things might have been different. Oh,
- 27:37you'd have foed away after all, you figured out it was the postmark that
- 27:41was important. Only after I've been slapping the face by a perfectly harmless letter
- 27:44with no envelope. Had to be the postmark. What else? Who they're
- 27:48starting? Yeah, good luck mis tomorrow, give him the works. Don't
- 27:53worry, baby, I'm eagle witness. Today. We're gonna knock them dead.
- 27:56Literally, they got it coming. I watched Jernigan's face as the preliminary
- 28:03has gone underway. The killer was beaten me. When the court finally settled
- 28:08down to work and the prosecutor took over, I listened to his death build
- 28:11up as he primed the jury, and the dramatic ring master of voice he
- 28:15used when he called, will Philip Morlow take the stand? Please? Now,
- 28:23mister Morlow, you told us yesterday that you are a private investigator.
- 28:29Now will you tell the court in your own words what happened to you last
- 28:33night? I sat there looking into the cold bale flies. The prosecutor he
- 28:41thought of a paraphrase on that wonderful quote from Oliver Wndel Holmes. It's not
- 28:47enough to ask for justice. One must also hope for mercy. Mister mollow
- 28:52oh oh, yes, I'm sorry. Well. It began here in this
- 28:56room yesterday afternoon at about three point thirty, when the Council Defense called a
- 29:00witness and mister Leonard Gaines to the stand. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing
- 29:22You Raymond, Chandler's most famous character and crime's most deadly enemy, star Gerald

- 29:49Be sure and be with us again next week. When Philip Marlowe says,
- 29:53the trail started Montana with a bum with two names, rushing away from his
- 29:57lady love and led fast into La past A Southerner from Canada, a worried
- 30:03wool dealing a chorus girl with a forty five. When it finally stopped at
- 30:07Murder in the Park, the tramp was still in a hurry. You and

- 30:56follows immediately over most of these same CBS stations. There's is CBS where Arthur
- 31:08god Prees telling Scotts I heard Monday's the Columbia Broadcasting System Welcome Back. I
- 31:26like that episode. Really nice setup in terms of the stakes and the mystery
- 31:32that needed solved, and also a pretty satisfying conclusion. The only thing I
- 31:37didn't get was the last line when he remembered the Oliver Wendell Holmes quote about
- 31:41mercy. Because I can't figure out why he was thinking about that. Usually
- 31:45at the end when they throw in those little quotes, they kind of make
- 31:51sense in the context of the episode. But that will actually do it for
- 31:55today. Join us back here tomorrow for Nick Carter and next Wednesday another episode
- 31:59of Marlow. In the meantime, become one of our friends on Facebook,
