- 0:00Speaker 1: It is spooky season, and we are now kicking off
- 0:02Speaker 1: the John Jenrich spooky season with what we.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Do every year.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We find out about what are you afraid of that's irrational,
- 0:09Speaker 1: an irrational fear.
- 0:11Speaker 3: You know it's a little silly, but you're still a
- 0:14Speaker 3: little scared.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Like Jessica, you, what's your irrational fear, Jessica?
- 0:18Speaker 4: I'm terrified of touching ice cubes.
- 0:23Speaker 2: You're terrified of picking ice cubes?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Touching?
- 0:25Speaker 4: Touching them.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Oh, touching ice cubes.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Because of the cold?
- 0:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I can't stand the thought of touching an ice cube.
- 0:32Speaker 3: With your mouth while you're drinking, it's okay, but you're
- 0:34Speaker 3: just saying with your fingers?
- 0:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 5: Do you know where that comes from?
- 0:40Speaker 4: I think it's because when I was young, we always
- 0:43Speaker 4: watched Christmas Story.
- 0:45Speaker 2: When he got his tongue stuck in a pole.
- 0:48Speaker 7: I think it traumatized me.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I only know that from Dumb and Dumber. Was that
- 0:52Speaker 2: on Dumb and Dumber? You got his tongue stuck in
- 0:53Speaker 2: a pole? Was it also on Christmas Story?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I never saw Christmas Story, so I don't know.
- 0:57Speaker 7: Oh, you're missing out.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I hear that every year.
- 0:59Speaker 3: You never saw I'll Shoot Your Eye Out?
- 1:01Speaker 2: No.
- 1:02Speaker 3: What?
- 1:02Speaker 2: It's a Christmas card.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I kind of wonder how you've missed it. They play
- 1:07Speaker 3: that 24-7.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Let me tell you how many times we've talked about this.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You've actually given me the DVD.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Jessica, thanks for calling in. Irrational Fears. Mary, what's yours?
- 1:20Speaker 4: My irrational fear is empty swimming pools.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Empty swimming pools. Why?
- 1:29Speaker 4: It wouldn't be irrational if I knew. When I was
- 1:32Speaker 4: a kid, my school was right next to a big
- 1:36Speaker 4: regional park, and they had one of those huge community
- 1:39Speaker 4: pools that had Olympic lanes and a diving side. And
- 1:44Speaker 4: in the winter, they would drain the pool and I
- 1:47Speaker 4: would see it every day, like going into school. And
- 1:51Speaker 4: I just I couldn't look at it. And like my
- 1:56Speaker 4: breathing would get like labored. I wouldn't be hyperventilating, but
- 2:01Speaker 4: I would feel this weird like. just like oppressive weight
- 2:05Speaker 4: in my body. I don't know, if you're like a
- 2:09Speaker 4: reincarnation person, did I drown in.
- 2:12Speaker 7: A past life?
- 2:13Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:13Speaker 2: That makes sense.
- 2:14Speaker 4: But yeah, empty swimming pools like freak me out even
- 2:17Speaker 4: to this day.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Makes sense to me. Isn't that what happened to Barb
- 2:20Speaker 3: in the Upside Down in Stranger Things?
- 2:22Speaker 6: She was in a pool.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Mary, when I was a kid and I grew up
- 2:26Speaker 1: in Tucson, we lived in the hood and I'd have
- 2:28Speaker 1: to walk to school and there was an abandoned house
- 2:31Speaker 1: on the way to school. that we all thought was haunted.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So every time we had to walk in front of
- 2:35Speaker 1: the house, we would sprint in the backyard. It had
- 2:38Speaker 1: an empty pool. The rumor was someone drowned there.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Oh, that's creepy.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I just think now as an adult, I think it
- 2:46Speaker 2: was just for sale. Thanks, Mary.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Hey, I mean, irrational fear. I think we've all talked
- 2:53Speaker 1: about this before. You're in the swimming pool and you
- 2:54Speaker 1: think somebody's going to grab you by the ankle and
- 2:56Speaker 1: pull you underwater.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I always think a shark is in there.
- 2:58Speaker 2: That's irrational fear.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Irrational.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Thanks, Mary.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Sammy.
- 3:06Speaker 7: My irrational fear is Michael Myers, and I still have
- 3:10Speaker 7: to check in my closets and underneath my bed, and
- 3:14Speaker 7: I'm 41 years old.
- 3:15Speaker 3: That makes sense to me. You see that stuff? When
- 3:18Speaker 3: you see that way too early, like most of us did,
- 3:20Speaker 3: that stays with you. You think it's real.
- 3:22Speaker 6: But it's only Michael Myers specifically. It's not just a
- 3:25Speaker 6: random man under your bed or in your closet.
- 3:26Speaker 2: It's Michael.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Honestly, I still don't like to sleep with like a
- 3:33Speaker 3: leg or an arm hanging over the side of the
- 3:35Speaker 3: bed because something will get.
- 3:39Speaker 7: It.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You're just leaving yourself exposed. If you're on the bed
- 3:44Speaker 3: under the covers, you are safe.
- 3:45Speaker 7: Right.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Because I mean, whatever like intruder monster that's in there
- 3:49Speaker 6: isn't going to take you.
- 3:51Speaker 3: They can't violate that.
- 3:52Speaker 7: So if I'm under the bed or if I'm under
- 3:56Speaker 7: the covers in bed and the closet doors open, I'm
- 3:59Speaker 7: My husband has to get out of bed and look
- 4:01Speaker 7: in the closet and shut it before he's allowed to
- 4:04Speaker 7: get back in bed.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Well, that makes sense because closets are portals anyway, so
- 4:08Speaker 6: you should definitely be shutting your closets at night anyway.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, we're not helping Sammy at all here, are we?
- 4:12Speaker 7: No. I just feel very justified for my behaviors.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 7: I'm 41 years old.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Do you think like it would be, you would like
- 4:21Speaker 5: leave your husband if he ever just like put a
- 4:23Speaker 5: Michael Myers mask in your closet just to prank you?
- 4:27Speaker 7: Oh, he would never.
- 4:28Speaker 1: What if it was like why you guys were making love?
- 4:32Speaker 2: He put it on in the middle.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Ew.
- 4:35Speaker 7: Oh, he'd get punched so hard in the face.
- 4:37Speaker 3: You should really hire somebody during that to pop out
- 4:40Speaker 3: of your closet.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Okay, so that's where it all stemmed from was my
- 4:43Speaker 7: dad did this to me as a kid. We lived
- 4:47Speaker 7: in the outskirts of Illinois in the suburbs. And we
- 4:51Speaker 7: had a boat that used to go out on Lake Michigan.
- 4:54Speaker 7: It was like a yacht. So during the wintertime, he'd
- 4:57Speaker 7: put it next to the house. And me and my
- 4:59Speaker 7: little friends would all want to sleep in it. And
- 5:01Speaker 7: then he would come up, you know, like the bow
- 5:03Speaker 7: of the boat where they got the little windows. He'd
- 5:06Speaker 7: come up with his Michael Myers mask and scare us all.
- 5:10Speaker 2: No wonder. And then one.
- 5:11Speaker 7: Time he sent my mom out to go get pizza,
- 5:14Speaker 7: and all I saw in the ditch was her car
- 5:16Speaker 7: and them being carried across the field.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 5:19Speaker 6: He went too far.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So he went full in.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:23Speaker 1: So I just created a whole Saturday Night Live skit
- 5:25Speaker 1: by something you just said. You said he would scare
- 5:28Speaker 1: us all. What if there's a Saturday Night Live skit
- 5:30Speaker 1: with just a can of spray and it.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Scares us all? For Halloween, you spray it and everybody screams. Scarasol.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Take it, SNL. Sammy, thanks for calling in.
- 5:40Speaker 7: Yeah, no problem.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Daisy, what's your irrational fear?
- 5:46Speaker 5: So mine, last year, it was last year, it was
- 5:49Speaker 5: the heater, my heater. So basically, for some reason, well,
- 5:55Speaker 5: not for some reason, my rental company changed to a
- 5:59Speaker 5: digital thermostat. Something triggered in me, and every time it
- 6:04Speaker 5: would turn on, I would lose my cool.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I don't know why.
- 6:07Speaker 5: I would lose my, but I guess, long story short,
- 6:11Speaker 5: I got diagnosed with OCD.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Oh, you did?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Well, she's not wrong. She lost her cool because the
- 6:17Speaker 3: heater was on. That's how you lose your cool.
- 6:20Speaker 2: It gets warm.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Yeah, but it was so bad. It was so bad where, like,
- 6:25Speaker 5: I don't know what triggered it, but seeing it and
- 6:27Speaker 5: seeing the temperature on my wall, like, every time it
- 6:30Speaker 5: would turn on, I would, like, pace. I would, like,
- 6:33Speaker 5: it was so bad. I stopped eating for two weeks,
- 6:35Speaker 5: ended up.
- 6:35Speaker 3: In the ER. Oh, my gosh, you poor thing. Yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 3: but then it's OCD.
- 6:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I guess repetitive things annoy me apparently, but I'm medicated now.
- 6:44Speaker 7: I think I'm okay.
- 6:45Speaker 3: You sound good.
- 6:46Speaker 2: What medicine do you take for OCD?
- 6:49Speaker 7: They have me on Sertraline.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Never heard of it. Well, good luck, Daisy.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Well, thank you so much.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Thanks for calling in. That's the thing. It's like irrational fears.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Like I'm afraid we talked about being a swimming pool
- 7:02Speaker 1: and someone grabbed my leg and pulled me under and
- 7:04Speaker 1: that couldn't happen. Other than that, I think all the
- 7:06Speaker 1: things I'm afraid of are legitimate. Like scorpion snakes, murderers,
- 7:11Speaker 1: serial killers. To me, to be afraid of a serial
- 7:14Speaker 1: killer makes perfect sense to me. I feel like they're
- 7:16Speaker 1: out there.
- 7:16Speaker 2: What is it? Like in your lifetime, you've passed 20
- 7:18Speaker 2: serial killers in your life? Which is wild.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Right.
- 7:20Speaker 2: So that's a medical fact.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I feel like that on the road. If somebody passes
- 7:24Speaker 3: me because I'm going too slow, I think they're going
- 7:26Speaker 3: to shoot at me. Oh, jeez.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Well, that could happen. That's not irrational.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Well, yours, I think, is because you're afraid that the
- 7:34Speaker 3: serial killer in your world, and you think this totally
- 7:37Speaker 3: makes sense, is somehow holding their breath in your cold
- 7:41Speaker 3: plunge waiting for you to get into it.
- 7:42Speaker 1: That's why it's irrational. That's the one irrational fear I have.
- 7:45Speaker 1: The rest seem rational. In fact, if you guys watch
- 7:48Speaker 1: the show, and I know we were talking about this yesterday,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but you guys didn't watch it, Kyle and Peyton, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's lanterns. One of the things to be the Green
- 7:54Speaker 1: Lantern is you can't ever show fear and have no fear.
- 7:57Speaker 1: They would never hire me as a Green Lantern because
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm afraid of a lot of things.
- 8:01Speaker 3: As you should be.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I know.
- 8:02Speaker 1: But the Green Lantern guy is not afraid of anything. Anyway,
- 8:04Speaker 1: I highly recommend Green Lantern on HBO. Peyton has a
- 8:08Speaker 1: Halloween dilemma.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Am I right, Peyton? Yeah. Let me do it really quick.
- 8:12Speaker 6: So I was talking to my husband, Kadeem, and we, a.k.a. I,
- 8:16Speaker 6: have decided that we're going to be Spider-Man and MJ
- 8:20Speaker 6: on Halloween when we're handing out candy.
- 8:21Speaker 3: To all the kids, right?
- 8:22Speaker 1: Cute.
- 8:23Speaker 6: But he is protesting because he says that technically he
- 8:27Speaker 6: would be the only one in a costume because me
- 8:29Speaker 6: dressing up as MJ isn't really a costume.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And I disagree.
- 8:33Speaker 2: But I kind of agree with Kadeem.
- 8:34Speaker 3: You're just being an outfit. Like, how do you dress
- 8:36Speaker 3: as MJ?
- 8:36Speaker 2: You'd be dressed like yourself. I would put on some glasses.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I would maybe, you know.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Do like a blowout with my hair.
- 8:41Speaker 2: But what are you actually wearing? Just normal clothes, right?
- 8:45Speaker 6: Cargo pants and a white t-shirt and a flannel.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You're not in a costume just because you put on glasses.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think the.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Glasses make it the costume.
- 8:55Speaker 2: No, because you've worn the glasses on a regular day.
- 8:57Speaker 1: It was like one year for Halloween, I went as
- 9:00Speaker 1: Joey from Friends. Because I was just wearing a shirt
- 9:03Speaker 1: and a pair of pants. No way. I just showed
- 9:06Speaker 1: up to the party as I was.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Well, he needs to take one for the team and
- 9:09Speaker 6: just dress up as Spider-Man.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I don't think he's protesting that. He's protesting you not
- 9:13Speaker 3: dressing up. If he dresses up as Spider-Man, you should
- 9:15Speaker 3: dress up as the female Spider-Man. Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Who's that? Spider-Gwen.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Black Widow? Are you thinking of?
- 9:21Speaker 4: No.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I feel like it was What's-Her-Face from Stranger Things. Oh,
- 9:25Speaker 1: she was Jean What's-Her-Face.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I was thinking the cartoon one. I was too.
- 9:28Speaker 6: The pink and white one. That's the one I was
- 9:29Speaker 6: thinking of.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Madam Webb. Something like that.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 2: By the way, you know the first call we took?
- 9:36Speaker 2: The first call we took, Jessica was afraid of ice.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Nick is telling me that we didn't let her finish
- 9:42Speaker 1: her story. The comedy in it, she's afraid of ice.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Her last name is Zamboni. Jessica Zamboni, and she's afraid
- 9:49Speaker 1: of ice cubes. That's a screamer for Nick. He's back
- 9:52Speaker 1: there howling over that one.
