- 0:44Speaker 1: right here. Tell that again, Chester real quick. The other
- 0:47Speaker 1: day I went, I'm gonna use this to I'm gonna
- 0:49Speaker 1: use this to I'm gonna piggyback my story on your story.
- 0:52Speaker 2: The other day I went into a gas station in
- 0:54Speaker 2: North Dakota and I needed to buy some zinfandel, which
- 0:58Speaker 2: is zen cho we called zinfandale. But the kid wouldn't
- 1:04Speaker 2: let me buy it because my Montana I D did
- 1:08Speaker 2: not scan and I was like I was jones and
- 1:12Speaker 2: for some because we were on the way back from
- 1:14Speaker 2: Wisconsin and I had long car ride. Danielle, my wife's
- 1:18Speaker 2: in there, crying baby. It was just like I really
- 1:21Speaker 2: needed it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: She wasn't crying baby. No, there was crying baby. Crying baby,
- 1:28Speaker 1: said my wife, Danielle in there crying baby, like she's
- 1:32Speaker 1: in there going I think, I think, I said.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And the anyways, I got I kind of got mad,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and I never do that.
- 1:48Speaker 1: That's what happens to as I was this is a
- 1:51Speaker 1: this is a well known thing with addicts.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I was like, dude, I was like, here's three credit cards,
- 1:56Speaker 2: here's my work. I d it, says photographer on it,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and call the cops. No, I didn't go that far,
- 2:03Speaker 2: but I like convinced them to get me the zims.
- 2:07Speaker 1: It was either that or you're gonna tear that place.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I made it.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Don't made me go out and get my chainsaw.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Made it through the drive.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick it up it. Can I pick it back?
- 2:17Speaker 1: My thing?
- 2:18Speaker 3: I know? Sure? Okay.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So I was in Duluth, Minnesota a long time ago.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I was driving from I was driving across the country.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I took a little side d two were up into
- 2:28Speaker 1: to Duluth and I'm in a bar in Duluth and
- 2:31Speaker 1: I get carted. I was a youngster back then, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: uh twenty six, twenty seven years old, and I have
- 2:38Speaker 1: a Montana driver's license. And the guy at the bar says,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm not kidding you. He says, hey, can you bring
- 2:46Speaker 1: a grease trap to my buddy's Pete's joint in fours?
- 2:50Speaker 2: And you didn't know? The guy?
- 2:52Speaker 1: No, what did you know? The guy get me forty bucks? What'sppened?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Did you know?
- 2:56Speaker 4: The guy in four corner?
- 2:57Speaker 1: Idly, I hand my bar to my bye and I
- 3:00Speaker 1: need to a bartender. He goes, you live in Montana
- 3:05Speaker 1: and I'm like yeah, and he goes, he knew Montana well,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and he's like he knew. However, we got to talk
- 3:10Speaker 1: about where I was going, and he wants me to
- 3:12Speaker 1: detour and drop a grease trap off at a bar
- 3:19Speaker 1: in uh uh in four corners near here, like the
- 3:23Speaker 1: Corner Club. I can't remember what the name of the
- 3:25Speaker 1: place was so long ago. He says, I'll give you
- 3:30Speaker 1: forty bucks. All you gotta do is bring it there
- 3:33Speaker 1: and set it out back. Did you do it? Yeah? Well,
- 3:35Speaker 1: he gives me a box and it's just a big
- 3:38Speaker 1: heavy box, all sealed up. And I get down the
- 3:43Speaker 1: road and I start getting paranoid. I start getting paranoid.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I get down the road aways and I get so
- 3:51Speaker 1: paranoid that I pull over cut that box open open
- 3:55Speaker 1: up is legitimately is a greasy ass grease trap. That's
- 3:59Speaker 1: fun man, And I made my delivery, got paid ahead
- 4:03Speaker 1: of time.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Perfect.
- 4:05Speaker 1: So it's called American elbow grease. How does this relate
- 4:08Speaker 1: to the tobacco thing? He said, you got to start.
- 4:14Speaker 1: There's a loose there's a tenuous piggy bag. Okay, joy
- 4:17Speaker 1: today Sidney Wells from outdoor Sports. What am I saying?
- 4:20Speaker 1: Barstool not outdoor barstool outdoors? Yes, which is part I'm mixed.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I combined out.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Door barstool sports. Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I meant to say barstool sports, but it's barstool outdoors.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been a long day.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And tell us why it's been a long day.
- 4:40Speaker 5: We've been duck hunting all morning.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Under the tutelage of our other guests, Brady Davis, give
- 4:47Speaker 1: us the setup. How would you say what we're give
- 4:50Speaker 1: us what we were doing.
- 4:51Speaker 6: So we'd been watching this field for a handful of days.
- 4:54Speaker 6: You know, it's it's a cut spring wheat field. It's
- 4:57Speaker 6: been loading up with ducks, loading up with keys, loloading
- 5:00Speaker 6: up with swans. Yeah, I actually had three swans, decoy
- 5:03Speaker 6: to day and land.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't see that. That's pretty cool.
- 5:05Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 5:05Speaker 1: A circle that is not normal, circled around. They're pushing
- 5:10Speaker 1: through right now.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Nobody had a tag.
- 5:12Speaker 1: No, and even if you did, you can't hunt him
- 5:14Speaker 1: here in this flyway.
- 5:15Speaker 6: If I'm if I'm not mistaken, I think the only
- 5:17Speaker 6: place you can hunt him is up it freeze out
- 5:18Speaker 6: Lake North.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So, yeah, we had a good game plan, good setup. Man.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I thought we had a heck of a morning. I
- 5:24Speaker 1: mean good time.
- 5:25Speaker 5: You did good at playing clean up too.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right.
- 5:29Speaker 5: It was a good morning.
- 5:30Speaker 1: It's really fun and talk some crap, and I was
- 5:33Speaker 1: shooting birds and he shoots a He shoots an old
- 5:38Speaker 1: ass ten gauge. It's eight seventy it's a Browning BPS. Okay, Yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you can't tell because it's painted like an American flag. Yep,
- 5:46Speaker 1: I know.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Yeah, it's Zarah Codad. It's a ten gauge pump with
- 5:52Speaker 6: a thirty two inch.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Barrels, the lords gauge. It's the Lord's.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Gauge, and the home with that thing all the time.
- 6:00Speaker 6: I hunt with it as much as I can. Yeah,
- 6:02Speaker 6: what I'll tell you is it's a strike killer.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Well every time he hits, he's like, well that's the
- 6:06Speaker 1: ten gage. Well you still have to aim it. Yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 1: it's like just a little more going on. Like you
- 6:13Speaker 1: could give that gun to a lot of people, nothing's
- 6:14Speaker 1: gonna happen.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, there there's there's a bit of skill
- 6:18Speaker 6: involved for sure.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, everyb what that is called is that's called leading proper.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 6: We did have one goose that was it was a
- 6:28Speaker 6: heck of a poke with the ten bore. Yeah, at
- 6:31Speaker 6: one high goose. That was good.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But now I had a great time. It was fun
- 6:34Speaker 1: hunting with you guys. We got him.
- 6:36Speaker 5: It was funny hunting out of the A frame too, because
- 6:39Speaker 5: when I was told there was gonna be a dry field,
- 6:40Speaker 5: I thought I was going to be in layout lines.
- 6:42Speaker 5: So the A frame was great to hear that we
- 6:45Speaker 5: were hunting out of.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It's so comfortable. Yeah, we had a guy. We had
- 6:48Speaker 1: a guy on the show. Chester. You were there, Chester's
- 6:52Speaker 1: here and was there? Max bard Is here, was not there,
- 6:57Speaker 1: Chili's here, was not there? Seth's here was there? Mm
- 7:02Speaker 1: following Yeah, we got it losing a lot of listeners.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm gonna tell Chester about layout blinds. Yes,
- 7:11Speaker 1: we had a guy on the podcast who was in
- 7:12Speaker 1: a layout blind and uh someone said, like get him,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and he blew three of his toes. He blew the
- 7:21Speaker 1: What's interesting is he blew three of them out of
- 7:24Speaker 1: the middle. Like when you picture blowing your toes off,
- 7:27Speaker 1: don't you picture blowing the edges? No you don't.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I picture you right in the middle of your foot. Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I always picture you'd shoot off one of the sides.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You shoot off your pinky toe, like I could picture
- 7:41Speaker 1: shooting off my big toe. I can't picture plucking the
- 7:44Speaker 1: three middle toes, goal, pucking the three middle toes out
- 7:49Speaker 1: of the spread.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I just picture blowing the whole damn thing.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, all their toes.
- 7:53Speaker 2: You have a picture of that somewhere way down on your.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Way down there. No, I wasn't there when he did it,
- 7:59Speaker 1: but I was there, and he told the Now, my
- 8:01Speaker 1: old man was shot in the foot rabbit hunting and
- 8:05Speaker 1: carried those pellets for a long long time in his foot.
- 8:08Speaker 1: No tolls removed. And then he didn't want to tell me.
- 8:11Speaker 1: They tried to keep it secret. So he acts like
- 8:13Speaker 1: he uh, act like he had had some kind of
- 8:16Speaker 1: other injury and they kept it secret from people that
- 8:19Speaker 1: someone had blown him in the foot.
- 8:22Speaker 7: There was a guy last year here in Montana, a
- 8:25Speaker 7: young buck that blew his foot off and had to
- 8:27Speaker 7: get life lighted out of the field. Uh, pretty pretty
- 8:32Speaker 7: much like the bottom half of his like or top
- 8:34Speaker 7: half of his foot.
- 8:35Speaker 1: See that ceases to be funny.
- 8:37Speaker 2: What that's not?
- 8:38Speaker 1: That's not I was telling the funny story. But it's
- 8:44Speaker 1: funny like shooting yourself.
- 8:48Speaker 7: Like, No, he wasn't using a blind at all.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Do you want to know the crazy thing about this guy?
- 8:53Speaker 2: He still shot the geese.
- 8:54Speaker 1: He's still the delay or ducks, so he's getting out
- 9:01Speaker 1: of his layout blind Boom.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Max knows this guy.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Oh you do. Yeah, that's the.
- 9:07Speaker 3: First time we met. Max was on that Oh because
- 9:10Speaker 3: Max stopped in on that shoot.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Max stopped in flayed a bunch of walleyes and.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Then packing a big old dip there chest. You can't talk.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Uh you know him? Yeah, Danny, Yeah, Yeah, I know Danny.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Boom.
- 9:32Speaker 1: There goes his toes and he's still like the delay.
- 9:37Speaker 1: The realization is, so he shoots it. He still shoots.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But then here's where it falls apart. If you ask
- 9:45Speaker 1: him if he hit he doesn't know. So somewhere between
- 9:54Speaker 1: somewhere you following me, yea, somewhere between shooting his toes
- 10:00Speaker 1: and registering whether or not he had a hit, it
- 10:03Speaker 1: struck him what had happened.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Yeah, he probably started shooting and realized something bad just happened.
- 10:08Speaker 7: I usually block out when I shoot into a flock
- 10:10Speaker 7: of geese. Yeah, I still got all my toes still.
- 10:14Speaker 6: Yeah, this is precisely why we had that long safety
- 10:17Speaker 6: speech this morning.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Oh I really appreciated that safety speech. Yeah, yeah, good, Yeah,
- 10:22Speaker 1: we do it. No, that's great. Yeah, it's like a
- 10:24Speaker 1: really a really uh thorough motivational safety speech.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Dude, I love that. Yeah, there's so many people, like,
- 10:35Speaker 2: there's so many times people don't do that and then
- 10:38Speaker 2: like stuff happened.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You know what it was in my it was it
- 10:42Speaker 1: was helpful because it uh the way you handle it
- 10:46Speaker 1: in the story you tell uh, it's effective because it
- 10:51Speaker 1: made it. It burned in my head.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you rethink things no matter how many times you
- 10:56Speaker 2: you know, are out there hunting or holding a gun.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It just it's always good to have that fresh reminder.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I was telling them, we do it even when it's
- 11:04Speaker 6: just us like the same guys we hunt with day
- 11:06Speaker 6: in and day out.
- 11:07Speaker 1: We could have hunted twelve days in a row.
- 11:10Speaker 6: And at the start of the hunt before shooting, like,
- 11:12Speaker 6: I'm going to stand in front of the A frame
- 11:14Speaker 6: blind and give a little bit of a soapbox speech
- 11:16Speaker 6: about safety.
- 11:17Speaker 5: Yeah. That constant reminders good because some people get overconfident.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Well, and sometimes the more you do it right, when
- 11:22Speaker 6: you're doing it every day, you just getcent you get complacent.
- 11:25Speaker 1: You get like a version of you get like a
- 11:27Speaker 1: version of yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah exactly, And so we
- 11:30Speaker 1: go through it every day.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Luckily, everybody that we hunt with that's kind of on
- 11:33Speaker 6: our team takes it serious. But especially when with guests
- 11:36Speaker 6: and new people. Right, I'm like, hey, we're going to
- 11:39Speaker 6: harp on you if we see anything that shouldn't be happening. Yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 6: let's just let's just do it right from the start,
- 11:46Speaker 6: and it's way more fun than we don't have to
- 11:47Speaker 6: be paranoid. And because we've all hunted with people that, like,
- 11:50Speaker 6: thirty minutes in, you're.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Like, we should have a safety speech.
- 11:54Speaker 5: We don't effective about oh sorry, go ahead, even just
- 11:58Speaker 5: the reminder of the gun on the A frame, like
- 12:01Speaker 5: just talking about not getting it caught, safety, all that stuff.
- 12:05Speaker 5: That's just gonna a reminder.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Yeah, another thing that you said that actually changed my behaviors.
- 12:09Speaker 1: As if I'm sitting there and I'm like, two hands
- 12:12Speaker 1: on the two hands on the shotgun and I know
- 12:14Speaker 1: a bird's gonna commit, I'll put it on fire, right,
- 12:18Speaker 1: And in your safety talk you said you're gone, goes
- 12:22Speaker 1: on fire when you're up.
- 12:24Speaker 6: When it clears the blind. It was pointing out, and
- 12:26Speaker 6: so I kept being same thing. I can't do that
- 12:29Speaker 6: because I get yelled.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I clicked and clicked. I was like I clicked and
- 12:35Speaker 1: I'm like, oh ship, and I clicked it back.
- 12:40Speaker 6: That well, in that moment, right, it's like that final moment,
- 12:42Speaker 6: like everybody's dead quiet, everybody's holding still. Your senses are heightened,
- 12:46Speaker 6: and sure as hell, you'll sit there and you'll hear click.
- 12:51Speaker 6: You just clicked off safe and I'm like, so I
- 12:54Speaker 6: click it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Bag loud counting. Yeah, so three clicks and you're out
- 13:03Speaker 1: of the fields. Yeah, Well with that, do you do
- 13:05Speaker 1: you kick? Like, have you ever had an instance where
- 13:07Speaker 1: you had to like stop a hunt because someone's not
- 13:09Speaker 1: falling the rules? We've had to reprimand before for sure,
- 13:11Speaker 1: what does that like look like for you guys?
- 13:13Speaker 6: Usually just when you see it happening, like the second happens,
- 13:17Speaker 6: you know, and try not to be an ass about it,
- 13:19Speaker 6: but like, hey, man, like matter of fact, if we're
- 13:21Speaker 6: going to keep hunting. I was serious about what we
- 13:24Speaker 6: talked about, right, Like, I'm not the fun police, but
- 13:26Speaker 6: we do all want to get out of here alive
- 13:28Speaker 6: and say, like, this is supposed to be the most
- 13:30Speaker 6: fun thing ever, so let's keep it that way. But
- 13:33Speaker 6: there has been times when we've had to stop and
- 13:35Speaker 6: remind people and you just see things right again. And
- 13:38Speaker 6: and honestly, it's usually the people that waterfowl hunt a lot.
- 13:43Speaker 6: It's not actually the newbies or the people that don't
- 13:46Speaker 6: do it often. It's it's usually, this is my point,
- 13:49Speaker 6: it's usually the guy who's hunting day in and day out,
- 13:51Speaker 6: and you just get complacent.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I mean, I can do it.
- 13:54Speaker 3: We can all.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we were on a hunt. There's a guy
- 13:57Speaker 2: that we know who is very you know, accomplished and
- 14:01Speaker 2: does it a lot. And you know, Seth had to
- 14:04Speaker 2: say twice nothing personal against the guy, but just be
- 14:08Speaker 2: like Beryl, you know.
- 14:11Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, that's my biggest it was at.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Our heads multiple times.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I unload on my kids about it, and I can
- 14:19Speaker 1: never always try to weigh, uh, like how much to
- 14:24Speaker 1: freak out on them. We don't want to turn them
- 14:26Speaker 1: totally off, but you're trying to scare the daylights out
- 14:28Speaker 1: of them. It's fine balances someone. If anyone's figured that out,
- 14:32Speaker 1: send me an email.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I personally know two people who got killed duck hunting. Seriously, yes, personally, no,
- 14:42Speaker 2: two people my my father's cousin and then a kid
- 14:49Speaker 2: that my brothers went to high school with. And it's like,
- 14:54Speaker 2: it's it is bad. And both of them happened in
- 14:58Speaker 2: a very similar way. They were in a boat and
- 15:02Speaker 2: one guy was sitting down. They were long story short,
- 15:08Speaker 2: they were taking turn shooting, so not everyone was supposed
- 15:10Speaker 2: to He's supposed to be shooting because in one instance,
- 15:14Speaker 2: one kid had a hurt leg, so when it was
- 15:17Speaker 2: his time to shoot, everyone would stay seating because he
- 15:21Speaker 2: couldn't stand, so it was only him shooting. Well, he
- 15:26Speaker 2: thought it was his turn. The other guy stood up.
- 15:28Speaker 2: He shouldn't be swinging that way anyways, but swung his
- 15:31Speaker 2: gun right into the face.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Of Can we move on?
- 15:38Speaker 2: But but I just want to say that. I just
- 15:41Speaker 2: want to say that because it's a reality and I'm
- 15:44Speaker 2: personally connected with two people, and I don't think this
- 15:46Speaker 2: gets talked about. Actually enough is gun safety, and it
- 15:50Speaker 2: happens all the time.
- 15:51Speaker 1: This is why we harp on it. Another another Brady
- 15:54Speaker 1: Davis rules. He don't let dogs in the A frame
- 15:59Speaker 1: to tie.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Too tight and they just knock over crap.
- 16:02Speaker 6: Too tight, knock over guns. Yeah, you know, their tails
- 16:05Speaker 6: are always waggon, you know. And I it makes me
- 16:08Speaker 6: so paranoid when I see people with a dog in
- 16:10Speaker 6: an A frame and they'll always tell you like, well,
- 16:12Speaker 6: my dog's good.
- 16:13Speaker 1: He don't he don't freak out. He does everyone everybody's
- 16:16Speaker 1: got a good dog always watches where his tail.
- 16:20Speaker 8: Man.
- 16:20Speaker 6: So we we have a hard and fast rule no
- 16:23Speaker 6: dogs in the A frame ever, and they're always in
- 16:26Speaker 6: a dog hide by themselves.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And I appreciate it.
- 16:28Speaker 6: Like when guys like Max comes and hunts with us
- 16:30Speaker 6: and brings his dog, which is phenomenal dog, they're just
- 16:33Speaker 6: totally cool with it. Like I tell him when you're coming, like,
- 16:36Speaker 6: bring a dog blind. Even if we have a big
- 16:38Speaker 6: A frame and there's only four of us hunting and
- 16:40Speaker 6: there's tons of room.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Well it's not for just the hunter safety, it's for
- 16:44Speaker 4: the dog safety too.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we do. We do a series uh
- 16:52Speaker 1: meat eaters camp fire Stories, which these audio originals and
- 16:55Speaker 1: it's people telling the you know, so far the two
- 16:58Speaker 1: we've done have been and close calls, so like, shit,
- 17:02Speaker 1: that almost happened, real bad. And one of the guy
- 17:05Speaker 1: tells a story about getting shot by his dog. Yeah,
- 17:09Speaker 1: it happens. I mean you read about it, so you know,
- 17:11Speaker 1: it's crazy about some full circle stuff on that. We
- 17:16Speaker 1: one time had we had an emergency room doctor on
- 17:21Speaker 1: Adam Alan or Adam I screwed it up every time.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Alan Lazara came on and he's actually published about tree
- 17:31Speaker 1: stand incidents. But so he's an emergency room doctor and
- 17:35Speaker 1: a hunter and he came on and just implored people
- 17:40Speaker 1: to learn how to apply tourniquets and carry tourniquets. This dude,
- 17:46Speaker 1: he's Something's dad. He gets shot by his own dog
- 17:50Speaker 1: and had heard that podcast and did the what the
- 18:00Speaker 1: guy was talking about and it saved him. Yeah, and
- 18:03Speaker 1: like credits have and like listen to that doctor explained
- 18:06Speaker 1: that on the episode.
- 18:06Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 18:07Speaker 1: That's bad to the bone. Because how tight you put
- 18:11Speaker 1: that thing? Oh? Yeah, I mean you tight tight? Uh? Okay,
- 18:17Speaker 1: cid you give me your impressions of the hunt. They
- 18:19Speaker 1: were gonna pull that tongue out, the.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Impressions of the hunt ducks tongue. Well, we should go
- 18:23Speaker 5: ahead and start doing that. But I think that it
- 18:24Speaker 5: was a great hunt. I went to Canada and I
- 18:26Speaker 5: shot zero birds go down in Canada.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's hard to do.
- 18:31Speaker 3: How'd that?
- 18:32Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 18:32Speaker 3: I want to know the same thing.
- 18:33Speaker 1: How'd that go?
- 18:34Speaker 3: When was it?
- 18:34Speaker 1: How many days did you hunt? Uh?
- 18:37Speaker 5: Three? Give me okay, I lied, Okay, we saw zero ducks.
- 18:41Speaker 5: The first day we shot some specs, which was actually
- 18:44Speaker 5: pretty cool because of Illinois, they're super smart. But they
- 18:46Speaker 5: were tornadoing down. WI shot I think like thirty birds,
- 18:49Speaker 5: snowgies and specs. The first day wasn't that bad, but
- 18:51Speaker 5: that was between like twelve people, and then we didn't
- 18:58Speaker 5: shoot anything in the rest.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Of the trip.
- 19:00Speaker 1: We had two more hunt days.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Yeah, we shot the evening because I think we were
- 19:04Speaker 5: trying to shoot ducks that in the evening didn't anything.
- 19:07Speaker 5: In the next two days we didn't shoot anything, which
- 19:09Speaker 5: I get it, like that's hunting, it's not always going
- 19:12Speaker 5: to go that way. We did kill a mule deer,
- 19:14Speaker 5: so I wasn't that upset, but uh yeah, the weather
- 19:17Speaker 5: did get really warm and the wind. I don't know,
- 19:21Speaker 5: I don't know. We just didn't kill them. I don't.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I don't want to hate on anybody or anything because
- 19:25Speaker 5: it is how it goes typically.
- 19:27Speaker 1: But but you're a little bit hating on them.
- 19:28Speaker 5: I'm just a little salty. It just sucks my first
- 19:31Speaker 5: time up in Canada.
- 19:31Speaker 1: You're not hating on them, you're hating on that.
- 19:33Speaker 2: You didn't get ducks, yes, that big cold front that
- 19:37Speaker 2: just came through or no.
- 19:38Speaker 5: So it was okay. So it was mid October we left.
- 19:43Speaker 5: I hunted I think like the fifteenth around there. So
- 19:46Speaker 5: they had a cold front come through and they were
- 19:48Speaker 5: shooting hundreds of ducks. It was awesome, but I was
- 19:51Speaker 5: mule deer hunting, so I was focusing over there. I
- 19:53Speaker 5: came back, weather warmed up, cold front's gone, and there
- 19:57Speaker 5: was like no ducks flying.
- 19:58Speaker 1: We.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Like I said, the first day, we shot some specs
- 20:02Speaker 5: and some snow geese. So it was a horrible But
- 20:04Speaker 5: it wasn't like a lights out Canada trip which everybody
- 20:07Speaker 5: goes to Canada to do like, I've never been up there.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You were a victim of the old You should have
- 20:11Speaker 1: been here yesterday.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Yeah I actually was, yes, yes, and it sucked. Yeah,
- 20:16Speaker 5: it hurt, but it is what it is. I'm just
- 20:18Speaker 5: gonna have to go back up there.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:20Speaker 1: When things go real good, I'll tell people you were
- 20:21Speaker 1: here yesterday. Yeah, that's how good today was. Yeah. This
- 20:25Speaker 1: is like one of those days that if it was tomorrow,
- 20:27Speaker 1: we'd be talking about it. Yeah, but you were here, yeah, today,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you were here yesterday today.
- 20:33Speaker 5: Yeah. Today it was a good day though. So that's why.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Tomorrow, if it sucked, you would refer back to today. Yes,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and so you should have been here yesterday.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Absolutely, it's great. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 20:46Speaker 1: We recently had a guest on uh, Crian, do you
- 20:50Speaker 1: mind teeing us up from duck Like but it just
- 20:54Speaker 1: come come tee it up, cran, Okay, here.
- 20:57Speaker 9: You go teeing up. We recently had Phil Loveretzky on
- 21:01Speaker 9: from the University of Texas at El Paso and his
- 21:06Speaker 9: lab is teamed up with Ducks Unlimited for a project
- 21:09Speaker 9: called Ducks Duck Dna. You can visit that at duck
- 21:14Speaker 9: dna dot.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Com and you can listen to the whole damn.
- 21:17Speaker 9: And you can also listen to our entire podcast or
- 21:20Speaker 9: watch it on YouTube.
- 21:23Speaker 1: What do we call that one? Our wild ducks really wild? Yeah, exactly,
- 21:27Speaker 1: so our wild duct really wild. He came in to
- 21:29Speaker 1: talk about the way that you have game farm mallards
- 21:32Speaker 1: and the way game farm mallards are breeding their weakness
- 21:40Speaker 1: and habits into wild mallards in the United States exactly.
- 21:43Speaker 9: And one way to help contribute data to their growing
- 21:50Speaker 9: research is by participating yourself as a citizen scientist. So
- 21:57Speaker 9: we've got a bunch of test tube vials with an
- 22:03Speaker 9: agent in them and a reagent I actually don't know
- 22:06Speaker 9: the right word screwing that up, Yeah, sauce. And the
- 22:10Speaker 9: instruction is to cut the mallard tongue out or part
- 22:15Speaker 9: of it out. And we've got kind of this little
- 22:18Speaker 9: box of tubes for meat eater colleague carvested ducks. So, uh,
- 22:26Speaker 9: Seth is gonna with his lab code on do a
- 22:29Speaker 9: little demonstration as we increase the reach of meat eater
- 22:34Speaker 9: laboratories as well.
- 22:35Speaker 1: You know, ladies, gentlemen.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Crinchnyder very well, all right, Science time and Karin Karin Morris.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Now Seth has If you're not watching on video, Seth
- 22:51Speaker 1: has Karin's lab code on. So I don't think he's
- 22:53Speaker 1: got his own sweet labte that says Karin. Yeah, get
- 22:56Speaker 1: to borrow. Not that cool yet? You ready, Yeah, let's
- 22:58Speaker 1: do it. I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you what's happening.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Seth is holding the Seth is prying the duck's mouth open,
- 23:05Speaker 1: and he's revealing its tongue, which is a Chinese delicacy.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Yep, save your tongues if you have time.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Have you cooked them up yet?
- 23:15Speaker 5: Crinn?
- 23:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Seth, I would say quarter quarter of an inch.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Right there, So just a quartern in quarter of an
- 23:22Speaker 3: inch from the top.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Get this joke. It's on the tip of his tongue
- 23:28Speaker 1: right there at the little indent. Yeah, you get it.
- 23:32Speaker 3: They kind of naturally have a spot that shows you
- 23:35Speaker 3: where to cut.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Really, it's like God wanted to just send the tip
- 23:38Speaker 1: of his tongue in.
- 23:41Speaker 3: There.
- 23:41Speaker 1: He goes, Oh that noise? Was it up? Sharp Knight?
- 23:47Speaker 3: Getting number one?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Seth has cut the tip of its tongue on the number.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Is it probably marring Phill's special studio table? Oh yeah, Brady?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Did he cut into the table.
- 23:59Speaker 6: I don't think he cut into the table, but I
- 24:01Speaker 6: use the table as it's a cutting makes a fine cutting.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Boarder marring Fill's special table.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Can I touch this with my hands or is that
- 24:10Speaker 3: gonna mess anything up?
- 24:11Speaker 4: I think you're fine with you.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I don't know. They might have.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Goodness all right, and there it is specimen number one.
- 24:27Speaker 3: There's number one.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, now you got to fill out your sheet.
- 24:32Speaker 3: I don't have anything to write.
- 24:34Speaker 4: We can do that later.
- 24:35Speaker 1: So yeah, we just that's all it takes. We just
- 24:37Speaker 1: participated in citizen science. So now this will get submitted
- 24:42Speaker 1: with a lat lawn court will get submitted with corn.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And it's one of the kind of what other kind
- 24:47Speaker 1: of biometric detail they want off that they they don't
- 24:50Speaker 1: need to ask a lot, they can just figure it
- 24:52Speaker 1: out themselves, right. They want to know male female.
- 24:54Speaker 7: Yeah, they want species, sex, location, latitude, long longitude, date, comments,
- 25:00Speaker 7: got it?
- 25:02Speaker 3: Probably ought to put this into fridge, right.
- 25:04Speaker 1: And then they will be able to take that mallard
- 25:06Speaker 1: and so far what that should based on the conversation
- 25:09Speaker 1: we have with them, that should come back wild mallard, purebread.
- 25:15Speaker 1: That's your remembrance. Yeah, that that duck should come back purebread.
- 25:18Speaker 1: But they're watching the very slow westward creep of pen
- 25:26Speaker 1: Raise mallard. So mallards from pen Rais mallards originating from Europe,
- 25:33Speaker 1: brought in as game farm birds, breeding into wild mallards
- 25:39Speaker 1: and perhaps creating some troubled behaviors, not following migratory patterns well,
- 25:49Speaker 1: poor nesting success, poor site selection, lower ability to navigate,
- 25:56Speaker 1: foul weather, not that foul. Oh can I get you
- 26:01Speaker 1: a little feedback, Brady, I would love to. Naming your
- 26:04Speaker 1: dog Lead creates a lot of confusion that good story
- 26:12Speaker 1: because he's like, Lead, No, what now, who's cheoting Lead?
- 26:15Speaker 2: Lead?
- 26:16Speaker 1: Like is it what happened? Like if there's multiple times,
- 26:18Speaker 1: I'm like he's talking about his dog.
- 26:20Speaker 5: He was doing the safety protocol and he said Lead.
- 26:22Speaker 5: I'm like, well you should probably keep your tone down here.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Lead, I mean named my next dog. Take him, Brady,
- 26:30Speaker 1: what's the punchline? Well, we named him lead because it's
- 26:33Speaker 1: the only lead we can legally use in the field.
- 26:35Speaker 1: There it is.
- 26:36Speaker 6: And I love single syllable names for a dog, So
- 26:38Speaker 6: Lead we can use lead because he's good in the field.
- 26:41Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, he did great today. It was a
- 26:43Speaker 1: good day. Saved us a lot of walking great dog. No,
- 26:47Speaker 1: he does, and he like he has he brings a
- 26:49Speaker 1: lot of gusto. Yeah, he he. I would say he
- 26:53Speaker 1: assaults the geese. Not not in a bad way. It
- 26:57Speaker 1: doesn't like mold. Yeah, but but if it's if it's
- 27:00Speaker 1: running away, he's on it. He's like he goes after
- 27:04Speaker 1: that football player.
- 27:05Speaker 6: He had one today. I mean it was like a
- 27:06Speaker 6: thousand yards. It was a sailor and then he ran
- 27:09Speaker 6: way out to it. Right when he got to it,
- 27:11Speaker 6: had joker got up and flew like another three hundred
- 27:13Speaker 6: yards and went back down and freaking all the way there,
- 27:16Speaker 6: came back.
- 27:17Speaker 1: He was he was catching his breath on this thing. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:20Speaker 1: that was awesome. That Uh listener listener question here.
- 27:26Speaker 9: Uh.
- 27:26Speaker 1: The topic is fuzzy waterfowl regulations. This is something we've
- 27:30Speaker 1: discussed a great bit, but we'll discuss it right now again.
- 27:33Speaker 1: This this fella says there's a great area. This is
- 27:37Speaker 1: the This is a listener email. There's a great area
- 27:40Speaker 1: and waterfowl hunting regulations. I have to edit this is it?
- 27:49Speaker 1: This is verbatim.
- 27:50Speaker 9: Crinn I had to edit a little bit.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Okay, apologies to the listener. There's there's a gray area
- 28:00Speaker 1: and waterfowl hunting regulations, which is a rule I'm trying
- 28:05Speaker 1: to edit it on the fly, which is a rule
- 28:06Speaker 1: that's broken in ninety nine percent of grip and grin
- 28:10Speaker 1: waterfowl picks. There's also a discrepancy in party shooting. Okay,
- 28:17Speaker 1: this is like answering your question, but you don't know
- 28:19Speaker 1: what the question not his fault. What are you talking about?
- 28:23Speaker 1: Is this? I believe Krin is this correct? He's talking
- 28:25Speaker 1: about how you're supposed to have your own ducks separate. Okay,
- 28:29Speaker 1: so when you're hunting ducks, you're supposed to keep track
- 28:34Speaker 1: of who knows who got what, because you're not supposed
- 28:38Speaker 1: to party hunt. Meaning if three guys are in a
- 28:40Speaker 1: blind and you're each allowed five ducks, let's say and
- 28:44Speaker 1: one guy's got the hot gun, Theoretically that guy is
- 28:47Speaker 1: not supposed to shoot fifteen ducks. And then he's like, hey,
- 28:50Speaker 1: I got everybody's limit, Like every hunter's supposed to get
- 28:55Speaker 1: their own stuff. This guy brings up, well, okay, but
- 28:59Speaker 1: when you take a duck grippingrin, you lay your ducks out.
- 29:02Speaker 1: The ducks aren't separate, and when you're shooting and a
- 29:06Speaker 1: duck comes in and three people stand up and by
- 29:08Speaker 1: back who's duck? So he says, that's the gray area.
- 29:12Speaker 1: And I think you're correct. I think that's why you
- 29:16Speaker 1: don't see. I think there's like laws that are on
- 29:22Speaker 1: the book. But in all of the time that I've
- 29:24Speaker 1: been alive, I've never met someone who had a warden
- 29:29Speaker 1: come in and had to be that he wants to
- 29:32Speaker 1: understand out of three shooters who shot the duck. People
- 29:36Speaker 1: that get in trouble for this are it's like you
- 29:38Speaker 1: get in trouble for this later on your way home.
- 29:42Speaker 1: There's confusion. I never have heard of or seen of
- 29:44Speaker 1: anyone jump out and be like, all right, boys, I
- 29:47Speaker 1: got you cause I feel like more than one of
- 29:50Speaker 1: you hit that duck, But now what are you gonna do?
- 29:53Speaker 1: I think it's like what we'd normally do in the situations.
- 29:57Speaker 1: We'd look and be like, felt like Jimmy's ducks seemed
- 30:04Speaker 1: like he was aiming right.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Someone's just got to claim that ducky he claim the dock.
- 30:07Speaker 7: Yeah, and that goes against or goes towards their limit.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Yeah, And so this isn't negating, it's not negating. The
- 30:15Speaker 1: listeners thinking but it is fuzzy, and I think the
- 30:19Speaker 1: way you cope with the fuzziness is you kind of
- 30:22Speaker 1: look at over the course of time, where do you
- 30:24Speaker 1: see people get in fractions. They get in fractions about
- 30:27Speaker 1: shipping ducks, transporting ducks after the hunt. I've just never
- 30:30Speaker 1: heard of somebody getting in trouble over like a like
- 30:34Speaker 1: a like a dispute like that, meaning a bunch of
- 30:37Speaker 1: people shoot someone claims the duck. I mean, of course
- 30:41Speaker 1: there's the impossible way to do it. And I've never
- 30:43Speaker 1: heard that it's illegal for two people. It's not like
- 30:46Speaker 1: illegal for two people to shoot at one duck.
- 30:48Speaker 4: No, No, I agree.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I think somebody's got to claim it.
- 30:51Speaker 6: To Max's point, the other thing we do is if
- 30:53Speaker 6: we have a lot of people in the blind and
- 30:54Speaker 6: we're like really getting them, we will lay the birds
- 30:57Speaker 6: out behind the blind in separate piles. So it's like, okay, Brady,
- 31:01Speaker 6: Steve Sidney, you know, Dane, whatever.
- 31:05Speaker 4: One there.
- 31:06Speaker 6: I think the biggest thing is as soon as we're
- 31:08Speaker 6: done in the field and we're about to go and
- 31:11Speaker 6: and this boggles my mind that people don't do this,
- 31:13Speaker 6: but we tag them.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you this morning did like what you're supposed
- 31:17Speaker 1: to do.
- 31:18Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it's a federal law that you have
- 31:20Speaker 6: to tag birds for transport, and so we tag them
- 31:23Speaker 6: and it's got the hunter's name, you know, the county
- 31:25Speaker 6: that was killed, the species, the number, the signature, everything
- 31:29Speaker 6: on that tag. That one is a fascinating rule because
- 31:33Speaker 6: so many times people have been waterfowl hunting with us,
- 31:35Speaker 6: and I'm sure Max's experiences and you're like, all right,
- 31:37Speaker 6: we're going to tag birds, and people look at you
- 31:40Speaker 6: like you're speaking Japanese man, like what are you talking about.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah, like, we got to tag them. I tag them
- 31:46Speaker 1: if I'm if I clean them and leave like a
- 31:49Speaker 1: wing attacked and I'm flying somewhere and I'm flying them home,
- 31:52Speaker 1: I would tag them. But I would I never in
- 31:55Speaker 1: my life tagged bird to drive ten twenty miles down
- 31:57Speaker 1: the road.
- 31:57Speaker 7: Yeah, as long as they're with you, you're fine, okay.
- 32:02Speaker 7: But yeah, to Brady's point, for like any kind of transportation,
- 32:06Speaker 7: if like you leave your birds with someone else, they
- 32:08Speaker 7: got to be tagged for sure.
- 32:09Speaker 6: So the way the rule is written is I think
- 32:11Speaker 6: it's actually like if you're going from the field to
- 32:13Speaker 6: your abode, then you're you're good but like today we
- 32:18Speaker 6: went from the field to launch to the office here
- 32:22Speaker 6: for the podcast and then home. And you start doing that,
- 32:25Speaker 6: then they need to be tagged.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, now you're in a building that's not your home
- 32:29Speaker 1: and there's birds in your truck that are not completely yep,
- 32:31Speaker 1: you're not you're not with them right because they're out
- 32:34Speaker 1: in the parking lot right. So and it takes two
- 32:36Speaker 1: seconds to tag the birds.
- 32:38Speaker 6: Like, it's just a simple rule to keep, and you
- 32:40Speaker 6: just make sure you're always above board all the time.
- 32:43Speaker 1: You know, another another rule that you always hear about
- 32:46Speaker 1: being a rule, and you don't hear everybody get in
- 32:47Speaker 1: trouble with the rule is, uh, you know, you're not
- 32:50Speaker 1: supposed to have like eagle feathers, hawk feathers unless you're
- 32:54Speaker 1: like a Native American or something. We had a word
- 32:56Speaker 1: none and he said he's written two citations that And
- 33:01Speaker 1: he said one time he is at a red light
- 33:05Speaker 1: and there's a guy next to him that his his
- 33:08Speaker 1: rear view mirror is draped in rafter talents.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, pulls him over.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Another time he's it is leaving his grocery store pushing
- 33:22Speaker 1: a shopping cart and looks in the back of the
- 33:24Speaker 1: truck and there's a dead owl in the back. So
- 33:28Speaker 1: he waits to talk to the guy and he said
- 33:30Speaker 1: it was funny. Is both people their immediate thing was
- 33:33Speaker 1: to tell me their Native American? Oh my god, neither
- 33:38Speaker 1: neither was the very Scandinavian that was like, that's like
- 33:43Speaker 1: the little thing everybody has in her head. Is I
- 33:45Speaker 1: think it's okay? I like you're Native American? Right, It's
- 33:48Speaker 1: like I'm Native American. Ah, here's not an interesting thing.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Now sitting you feel free to weigh in on any
- 33:54Speaker 1: of the stuff you want. Is there anything you'd like
- 33:57Speaker 1: to add right now?
- 33:58Speaker 5: No, I've actually didn't know about the feather.
- 34:00Speaker 1: So is your mirror drave you're gonna want to get.
- 34:07Speaker 5: What I'm saying is like, does that mean.
- 34:10Speaker 1: It means that you're not allowed to have that? That
- 34:12Speaker 1: what I'm saying If I.
- 34:13Speaker 5: Find it on in the cornfield and I see a feather.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Yes, like if you took that feather, and like if
- 34:20Speaker 1: you took that feather and put it in your backpack again,
- 34:23Speaker 1: it's one of those rules that it's a rule, but
- 34:27Speaker 1: you just don't meet. There's many more people that have
- 34:29Speaker 1: picked up a egle feather than there are that got
- 34:32Speaker 1: in trouble for picking up ego feathers. It was just
- 34:35Speaker 1: one of those interesting rules that you sort of have
- 34:37Speaker 1: the feeling in the back of your head that there's
- 34:39Speaker 1: something about how you're not supposed to do it.
- 34:41Speaker 5: Well, I didn't know that I'm not picking up feather,
- 34:43Speaker 5: so nobody come for me.
- 34:46Speaker 1: But this guy's point was he presented, he was presented
- 34:49Speaker 1: with two things that he couldn't ignore. In no situations
- 34:55Speaker 1: he would. He stepped in because the one was just
- 34:58Speaker 1: like like this, like sort of you know, chandelier of
- 35:02Speaker 1: rapid talons caught his eye and then everyone was like
- 35:04Speaker 1: the actual dead owl. But that's the thing. It's just like,
- 35:07Speaker 1: you know, maybe they dyed the damn feather and it
- 35:10Speaker 1: looks like ego feather.
- 35:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yeah, like if Oscar is out in the field and
- 35:14Speaker 2: he picks up an eagle feather, you know you're.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Not gonna lot, You're not gonna call him and stuff.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 35:19Speaker 6: So we were on a hunt last year and we
- 35:21Speaker 6: shot a goose and it sailed like the next field
- 35:23Speaker 6: over and the boys kind of all marked it, like
- 35:26Speaker 6: I think he went that direction, and so I got
- 35:28Speaker 6: out of the blind and I like went on a
- 35:29Speaker 6: hike with lead.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I'm like, we're gonna go find this goose again his dog,
- 35:33Speaker 1: My dog led, Yeah, it's an effective method. Get that goose.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Let better not that hasn't been illgal since nineteen eighty six, right,
- 35:43Speaker 1: But we.
- 35:44Speaker 6: Hiked our butts over there, and I'm like, all right,
- 35:45Speaker 6: he's in this direction. So with dogs, you can send
- 35:47Speaker 6: him on a blind retree, right, like they didn't see
- 35:50Speaker 6: it go down. You just send him, Yeah, send him
- 35:52Speaker 6: out and they'll work the area. And so I sent
- 35:54Speaker 6: him out and he's kind of working and I'm giving
- 35:56Speaker 6: him some some commands, and all of a sudden, he
- 35:58Speaker 6: gets real birdie. I'm like, yeah, got it. I mean
- 36:01Speaker 6: it just happened on thousands of times. Grabs a bird,
- 36:03Speaker 6: comes back and.
- 36:04Speaker 4: I'm like, that's not a goose, that's not a goose.
- 36:06Speaker 6: And brings back a dead hawk mmm, And I was like,
- 36:11Speaker 6: oh crap, Like what do I do? So I like
- 36:14Speaker 6: he he brought it to heel, sat handed it to
- 36:17Speaker 6: me like he's supposed to do, and I like took
- 36:19Speaker 6: it and instantly walked right back to where he had
- 36:22Speaker 6: picked it up from. And it's straight underneath the power line.
- 36:24Speaker 6: So all I can assume is it like this hot
- 36:26Speaker 6: got sat down the power line and I literally like
- 36:28Speaker 6: left it there and turned and we were like walking out,
- 36:31Speaker 6: and I'm like, crap, that's not good. And it's right
- 36:33Speaker 6: by a road, so I'm like, jeez, like I'm glad,
- 36:36Speaker 6: like I didn't want to look like my dog's retrieving hawks.
- 36:39Speaker 6: And right then this goose like pokes its head up
- 36:41Speaker 6: over the grass and I'm like that one go and
- 36:42Speaker 6: he gets out and went back to the blind.
- 36:44Speaker 9: Uh.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Upstairs in my office, I have a photo for my
- 36:47Speaker 1: dad's like I have a photo Pilford from my dead
- 36:50Speaker 1: father's old photos, and he has an old photo where
- 36:53Speaker 1: it's him and some other guys and they got cottontail
- 36:56Speaker 1: rabbits hanging from strings, and then on the end of
- 36:59Speaker 1: the the and the one of the strings they got
- 37:01Speaker 1: their owl, which is like, which was just like how
- 37:05Speaker 1: there was a matter of course, Yeah, it'd be like
- 37:08Speaker 1: if you were a small game hunter, get the hawks
- 37:11Speaker 1: and owls and conservation. Yeah it was, yeah, it was conservation.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Here's a good one. So Pat friend of the show
- 37:28Speaker 1: multiple times, been on the show many times, does some
- 37:32Speaker 1: articles for the meteater dot com. He wrote in and
- 37:36Speaker 1: he sent in a piece that he was recently working on.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Pat Dirkin being from Wisconsin and he pat covers wildlife politics. Uh,
- 37:47Speaker 1: Pat has one of my favorite quotes, which is big
- 37:49Speaker 1: Bucks make people stupid. Send us an article he's working
- 37:53Speaker 1: on about speaking of citizen science. So I thought, here
- 37:56Speaker 1: our resident citizen scientists today. He'll he'll perk right up
- 37:59Speaker 1: when you hear is this about a citizen science program
- 38:02Speaker 1: in Wisconsin where they monitor people's trail camps. So there
- 38:07Speaker 1: are about two thousand citizen scientists enrolled in Snapshot, Wisconsin.
- 38:16Speaker 1: And they give you some guidelines and all that. And
- 38:18Speaker 1: then so these two thousand trail cams are out there
- 38:22Speaker 1: and they're watching, like what are they getting? What are
- 38:23Speaker 1: they getting on the trail camps?
- 38:26Speaker 2: You want to talk about stay with a lot of
- 38:27Speaker 2: trail cams.
- 38:29Speaker 1: I am Wisconsin, That's what I am talking about.
- 38:33Speaker 3: It's a lot.
- 38:34Speaker 1: It's a lot there. Yeah, everywhere that there's no regulations
- 38:38Speaker 1: on trip.
- 38:38Speaker 2: You gotta be careful where you pee.
- 38:41Speaker 1: My did you see the picture I recently got with
- 38:43Speaker 1: my beaver cam that's ten to you.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Oh, it's fantastic.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like you think that i'd be getting like
- 38:49Speaker 1: an award from National Geographic It. I got a beaver
- 38:53Speaker 1: cam set up where it's on a little crossover between
- 38:56Speaker 1: a pond and the creek, and I just like to
- 38:58Speaker 1: watch the beavers go by. I so I want to
- 38:59Speaker 1: wake up with the more. Let's look on her and
- 39:02Speaker 1: see what all and everything and its brother comes through
- 39:04Speaker 1: here like everything it's not I don't want to say
- 39:07Speaker 1: where it is. It'd be illegal to hunt. It's in
- 39:10Speaker 1: an urban environment, urban environment, but it's just like this
- 39:16Speaker 1: little kind of like hotspot. And I keep a camera
- 39:19Speaker 1: there and I've gotten everything in its brother on this camera.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Mallard's walking by, mink, weasels, magpies, one of them poor wales.
- 39:30Speaker 1: What's the kind of whipper wool is around here? Whipple
- 39:32Speaker 1: wool looking bird keep wanting to send it to the
- 39:35Speaker 1: Cornell people.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Doesn't they call them like false wheals or something? Yeah?
- 39:38Speaker 1: Uh, mice rats, rats, pack rats, mice otters, scrats, mountain lion, deer,
- 39:48Speaker 1: a pet dog, house cat. What about a mountainin dude fishing?
- 39:52Speaker 1: No mountains give me time? Anyways, I get on it.
- 39:57Speaker 1: The other day, an otter standing there with a really
- 39:59Speaker 1: nice trout holding it by the head. Wow. And you
- 40:02Speaker 1: can tell the chiut's still live. He's all like curled up.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:05Speaker 1: And thenett Otter sat there, like perfectly sat there and
- 40:07Speaker 1: devoured that fish in front of the camera.
- 40:09Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 40:10Speaker 3: That was great.
- 40:11Speaker 1: So in Wisconsin they have this Snapshot Wisconsin. And what
- 40:16Speaker 1: Dirkin was writing about was he was writing about this
- 40:21Speaker 1: is Dirkin like a I don't know if Dirkin uh
- 40:23Speaker 1: I feel like Dirkin Rather than being a wolf hater
- 40:26Speaker 1: or a wolf lover, which comprises ninety percent of Americans,
- 40:29Speaker 1: Dirt falls in that sweet spot of like sort of
- 40:32Speaker 1: wolf rational Dirt or Dirkin is wolf rational. But he
- 40:37Speaker 1: hears people saying in Wisconsin like you can't get a
- 40:39Speaker 1: picture of a deer anymore. You're like, I get more
- 40:42Speaker 1: pictures of wolves than I get a deer. And so
- 40:46Speaker 1: he looked at this year when they came out with
- 40:48Speaker 1: the new Snapshot Wisconsin statistics, and so for Snapshot Wisconsin
- 40:56Speaker 1: right now, they're running four hundred and deer photos to
- 41:04Speaker 1: every wolf photo. But there's some interesting stuff in here.
- 41:09Speaker 1: So Sawyer County, Wisconsin, Sawyer County, Wisconsin, fifty seven cameras.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Where's that is that up north.
- 41:20Speaker 1: It's gotta be someone want to look. Yeah, So Sawyer County, Okay.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Not one northern county. So assuming not the southern ones,
- 41:30Speaker 1: they don't have wolves. Now one northern county had wolves
- 41:33Speaker 1: on every camera.
- 41:35Speaker 2: That's up by Hayward Good Musky country up there.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Saint Croix County two percent of the cameras. So in
- 41:45Speaker 1: Saint Croix County, there's forty seven cameras. In Saint Crai County,
- 41:48Speaker 1: forty seven enrolled cameras. In Saint Croix County, two percent
- 41:53Speaker 1: of the enrolled cameras picked up pictures of wolves. Dunn
- 41:59Speaker 1: County thirty cameras, two picked up pictures of wolves. Then
- 42:06Speaker 1: you get to this. Douglas County, sixty one of cameras
- 42:12Speaker 1: set out will grab a picture of wolf.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Wow.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Iron and Price Counties sixty three percent of cameras set
- 42:20Speaker 1: out capture wolf. Uh. Marinette County is the top for
- 42:29Speaker 1: deer photo prevalence, But there's some interesting stuff with bear prevalence.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Bear photos far outnumbered wolf photos in every county except Shiuano.
- 42:43Speaker 2: What is it, Shano, No, it's not Shano.
- 42:46Speaker 1: I'm looking at it right here.
- 42:47Speaker 7: Shiuano tomato, tomato, shawano, shano.
- 42:53Speaker 1: They're just like it did shortcutting it.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess that's probably just how we say it.
- 42:57Speaker 2: We had a cabin over by mountain, which was not
- 42:59Speaker 2: too far are from there. We did see wolves seanel,
- 43:03Speaker 2: we saw deer.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Two thirty cameras. Check this one out. This is interesting.
- 43:06Speaker 1: So in that county, thirty cameras snapped five hundred and
- 43:12Speaker 1: twenty nine bear photos and five hundred and twenty two
- 43:15Speaker 1: wolf photos.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Wow.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Saint Croix county forty seven cameras one wolf photo. Now
- 43:26Speaker 1: I'm not reading all of Durkin's article, but Dirk, I
- 43:28Speaker 1: guess the main point of Durkin's article is that there
- 43:31Speaker 1: aren't as many wolf photos as you'd think. But I
- 43:34Speaker 1: look and I'm like, that seems like a lot.
- 43:37Speaker 5: This a lot, especially on that point near Duluth, right
- 43:41Speaker 5: by the border of Canada. That's a that's a lot.
- 43:46Speaker 5: That's not very good for your deer population.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Okay, ready, now again, things could get things could Here's
- 43:52Speaker 1: the final synopsis for all the counties in Wisconsin and
- 43:55Speaker 1: for sure, oh sorry sorry, this is only northern This
- 43:58Speaker 1: is the stats for only northern Withisconsin. And this is
- 44:01Speaker 1: the final totals, and keep in mind the same things
- 44:03Speaker 1: can get multi photographed many times. I had a camera
- 44:06Speaker 1: one time, that photograph, you know, the photograph the same
- 44:10Speaker 1: doing fun five hundred times, right, So bear that in mind.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Total cameras one one hundred nineteen enrolled cameras in northern
- 44:19Speaker 1: Wisconsin and snapshot Wisconsin deer photos twollion, eight hundred ninety
- 44:27Speaker 1: nine thousand, six hundred and a spectacles on forty eight.
- 44:32Speaker 1: So we'll round up. We're gonna round these by the fives.
- 44:34Speaker 1: We're gonna round that up to one thousand cameras, rounding
- 44:38Speaker 1: down from eleven nineteen to one thousand. Rounding up. These
- 44:42Speaker 1: are big roundings, rounding up to two million, nine hundred thousand,
- 44:49Speaker 1: thirty six thousand, three hundred and twenty four bears. So
- 44:52Speaker 1: those one thy, one hundred and nineteen cameras captured thirty
- 44:56Speaker 1: six thousand, three hundred and twenty four bear image. Those
- 45:01Speaker 1: one nineteen cameras captured a total of six thousand, eight
- 45:07Speaker 1: hundred and three wolf photos, bringing the final number crunch
- 45:13Speaker 1: to one wolf photographed for every four hundred and twenty
- 45:20Speaker 1: six deer. Now, if I was a statistician, I'd probably
- 45:24Speaker 1: shoot all kinds of holes and how that's being looked at.
- 45:26Speaker 1: But that's all that's being looked at.
- 45:27Speaker 2: I mean wolves are so much more nomadic too.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Just which they it means they could show up on
- 45:34Speaker 1: potentially more cameras or probably perhaps less because they're not
- 45:37Speaker 1: camped out in some little spot.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I think perhaps less because they're not camped out. Let
- 45:42Speaker 2: me think of how many times you have a deer
- 45:44Speaker 2: camera out in Wisconsin and you get you get the
- 45:48Speaker 2: same deer coming through every night.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Yeah, same food bloods.
- 45:54Speaker 1: One of my favorite wolf stats when beavers are dispersing
- 45:59Speaker 1: in May and in the northern Great Lakes I can't
- 46:01Speaker 1: remember it is ninety eight percent of wolf scats contain
- 46:04Speaker 1: beaver remains. And then by the end, like by the
- 46:08Speaker 1: late summer, when they're not dispersing anymore, it just drops
- 46:10Speaker 1: off precipitously to next to nothing.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Yeah I read that.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they hammer beavers when the beavers are dispersing, and
- 46:18Speaker 1: then they just forget about them go on to something else.
- 46:21Speaker 5: So it was the point of the article saying that
- 46:22Speaker 5: the wolf problem isn't really a problem in Wisconsin.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Uh, let me tell you about I wanted to say
- 46:29Speaker 1: a couple things about darkin Okay. I recently got a
- 46:35Speaker 1: note from Durkin. I told a story recently about losing
- 46:39Speaker 1: a friend of mine, and I got a note from
- 46:42Speaker 1: Durkin about touching in with me about the story I
- 46:47Speaker 1: told about losing a friend of mine. I showed the
- 46:49Speaker 1: note to my wife, which my wife said, that is
- 46:51Speaker 1: one of the good ones, meaning Durkin. If everybody on
- 46:56Speaker 1: this planet behaved like Pat Durkin, there wouldn't be any problems.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I think what Pat's trying to say here is I
- 47:04Speaker 1: think Pat's trying to say that there aren't that many wolves.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Maybe is that you're He's like you people saying that
- 47:12Speaker 1: all you get is wolf photos. Let's look at the stats.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I think what.
- 47:15Speaker 2: He's saying is it's not as bad as everybody thinks
- 47:18Speaker 2: it is, because you go up to those counties and
- 47:20Speaker 2: you talk to those people and immediately they're like wolves.
- 47:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Yeah, everyone jumps to blame it on wolves. Maybe the
- 47:28Speaker 3: bears are killing I.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Think has to do with logging up there in the
- 47:33Speaker 2: Nicolay National Forest and not having there's there's more and
- 47:39Speaker 2: more old growth and not as much like new brows
- 47:43Speaker 2: and things like that. For deer that at least in
- 47:47Speaker 2: the area where we were at. I mean, there are wolves.
- 47:50Speaker 2: There are wolves, and there are more wolves. And you think,
- 47:53Speaker 2: I mean, when they opened the season, you know, in Wisconsin,
- 47:57Speaker 2: to shoot wolves. It was staggering how quickly they got
- 48:01Speaker 2: to quote.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Which always makes me think there must be a lot
- 48:03Speaker 1: of wolves. But let me let me give it to
- 48:05Speaker 1: dir I'll give it now that we got into it
- 48:07Speaker 1: and we're questioning Dirkin's, uh, you know, journalistic integrity. Here's
- 48:13Speaker 1: the headline. Northwoods deer outnumber bears wolves in trail cam survey.
- 48:20Speaker 3: That's the headline.
- 48:22Speaker 1: Dirkin goes on to say folks who scoring gray wolves
- 48:25Speaker 1: often claim they see more of them than white tailed
- 48:28Speaker 1: deer when poking around Wisconsin's Northwoods the past twenty years. Meanwhile,
- 48:32Speaker 1: trailcams are now as common as ravens and woodticks in
- 48:36Speaker 1: those forests, providing round the clock surveillance of bait pile's,
- 48:39Speaker 1: food plots and two track trails. All that photographic evidence
- 48:43Speaker 1: spawns countless claims and surplus exclamation points. And he quotes
- 48:49Speaker 1: someone quote, we seldom see deer on our trail cams anymore,
- 48:52Speaker 1: but we see plenty of wolves. Last fall before gun season,
- 48:56Speaker 1: I didn't find five sets of deer tracks in the
- 48:58Speaker 1: snow by falling, lots of wolf tracks, wolf tracks, and
- 49:02Speaker 1: some spots on our logging road look like Kyle paths.
- 49:05Speaker 1: That's why there's no deer left in northern Wisconsin. And
- 49:08Speaker 1: this individual that Pat's quoting has already used four exclamation
- 49:12Speaker 1: points and adds six on to the end of that passage,
- 49:16Speaker 1: means all of which were quoted by Pat. Then he
- 49:20Speaker 1: goes on to say this is Durkin as best I
- 49:27Speaker 1: could tell. Hold No Dirton goes on and say, hey,
- 49:32Speaker 1: every hundred throughout history wants more dear and deer sign
- 49:34Speaker 1: that includes me. While scouting my favorite sites in Ashland
- 49:38Speaker 1: County two weeks ago, I found no deer tracks or
- 49:40Speaker 1: buck signed in three days. And this is the former
- 49:44Speaker 1: editor of Deer and Deer Honey magazine. Pat's a deer. Well,
- 49:48Speaker 1: he's got thirty some shoulder mounts of white tail deer,
- 49:51Speaker 1: which is successive.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Something like that, successive something to shoot for.
- 49:56Speaker 1: That's awesome. Pat likes deer so much that you know
- 50:00Speaker 1: he put stickers on the truck. Pat's put stickers of
- 50:02Speaker 1: famous deer on his truck. Oh, he loves really likes deer.
- 50:07Speaker 5: Is he like goes You're like there's auctions where they
- 50:09Speaker 5: sell like the antlers.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Probably, Yeah, he loves deer in the Edmunds.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Fitzgerald knows a lot about the Edmond fitz and knows
- 50:15Speaker 1: a lot about the Navy. Okay, he was in the Navy,
- 50:18Speaker 1: knows a lot about that. I've never had that happen
- 50:21Speaker 1: in the shittiness of the sign He's saying, I've never
- 50:23Speaker 1: had that happen in twenty years of hunting that part of.
- 50:26Speaker 2: The Nicolay National Force.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Well, give me the first part chester.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Uh chikwam chika mcguan chikwamag chikwamagon chikuwama.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Gun chakuama gon Nicolay National Force. Isn't Nicola the fella
- 50:44Speaker 1: that showed up Green Bay, like cross Lake Michigan and
- 50:46Speaker 1: showed up with Green Bay and put on a Mandarin
- 50:48Speaker 1: robe like he thought he's in China. This dude for real, real,
- 50:55Speaker 1: This dude for real? I think Nicolay when he crossed
- 50:57Speaker 1: Lake Michigan, He's like ha, and he like had been
- 51:01Speaker 1: carrying like a China made robe of some sort and
- 51:06Speaker 1: put it on to go and like meet the people.
- 51:10Speaker 3: He's like, Wow, the muskie fishing is good, and check.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Suspiciously like the other side of the lake Nikola nashed Forth.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Dirkin goes on. Then again I saw no wolf sign either,
- 51:27Speaker 1: which makes sense. Why would wolves waste their time and
- 51:30Speaker 1: energy hunting such lousy deer habitat, especially after a scientifically
- 51:36Speaker 1: documented quote very severe killer winter for white tails. Then
- 51:43Speaker 1: there's a passage I'm not gonna read. Then I'm gonna
- 51:46Speaker 1: try to end this whole thing we're doing here by
- 51:49Speaker 1: getting to this to continue my quote of Pat Durkin.
- 51:52Speaker 1: But one man, and here's this isn't the important part.
- 51:56Speaker 1: But one man's observations. I'm pounding the table. But one
- 52:01Speaker 1: man's observations don't necessarily paint a picture. To learn what
- 52:06Speaker 1: my fellow hunters and other folks are documenting in Ashland County,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I looked up the snap Shot Wisconsin Data Dashboard Snapshot
- 52:19Speaker 1: Wisconsin's current five year data set. The numbers, however, make
- 52:27Speaker 1: you question some folks claims about wolves overrunning the north
- 52:32Speaker 1: Woods and then in Ashland County, for instance, thirty trail
- 52:36Speaker 1: camps in scientifically chosen sites took twenty three two and
- 52:41Speaker 1: ninety nine deer photos from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty two,
- 52:45Speaker 1: those same cameras took one hundred and seven wolf photos
- 52:48Speaker 1: and seven hundred and thirteen bear photos. Now, this deal
- 52:52Speaker 1: about wolves and bears is something that really keep in
- 52:57Speaker 1: mind because when they did mortalities, like the after wolves
- 53:01Speaker 1: came into Idaho and wolves is like decimated elk populations
- 53:04Speaker 1: in the Idaho Panhandle. But you know what had always
- 53:08Speaker 1: been really hard on them is mountain lions. So more
- 53:12Speaker 1: elk calves are killed by mountain lions in the Idaho Panhandle.
- 53:15Speaker 1: But that's always been that way. So whatever the hell
- 53:18Speaker 1: it was, is like like for every hundred calves that
- 53:20Speaker 1: hit the ground, twenty three, I don't know what the
- 53:22Speaker 1: number is, twenty twenty three, something like that, twenty three
- 53:24Speaker 1: or twenty, you're gonna killed my mountain lions. But it's
- 53:26Speaker 1: just always been that way. You have very stable mountain
- 53:28Speaker 1: lion populations over time. Everybody's used to it. Wolves come
- 53:32Speaker 1: in and they don't trump that number, but they add
- 53:36Speaker 1: to that number. And that so it's like what when
- 53:40Speaker 1: a wolf calf, when an elk calf hits the ground,
- 53:43Speaker 1: what's probably gonna kill it? A mountain lion. But wolves
- 53:47Speaker 1: are the new players in town. And there's the mountain
- 53:50Speaker 1: lions have always been killing whatever the number was, thirteen twenty,
- 53:53Speaker 1: I can't remember. They've always been killing that. But now
- 53:55Speaker 1: you're adding on eight and that's the tipping point normalcy.
- 54:01Speaker 1: So people on the ground are like, man, there was
- 54:03Speaker 1: a bunch of elk and then wolves came, and now
- 54:04Speaker 1: the elk are really down. If you could somehow remove
- 54:09Speaker 1: it's almost like if you could remove mountain lions and
- 54:11Speaker 1: almost do more for elk. But the wolves just tipped
- 54:13Speaker 1: it so wildly out of balance that whatever equilibrium was
- 54:17Speaker 1: there get shot.
- 54:19Speaker 5: And then what's the regulation in Idaho for wolves is
- 54:21Speaker 5: they're not they're delisted.
- 54:24Speaker 1: So we like we like I did something. Wolves were
- 54:30Speaker 1: successfully delisted in the Northern Rockies. So they were successfully
- 54:38Speaker 1: delisted in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. And it's been very
- 54:43Speaker 1: whip saw in the northern Great Lakes seesaw what's the
- 54:47Speaker 1: term whipsaw? Back and forth, back and forth.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you can like in Montana right now they're listed.
- 54:55Speaker 2: You can you can go and buy a wolf tank, like.
- 54:58Speaker 1: You could be walking around with one in your pocket
- 55:00Speaker 1: right now. In fact, I am.
- 55:06Speaker 7: You were right about the nick let guy showing up
- 55:10Speaker 7: in Green Bay with wearing a Chinese dress.
- 55:13Speaker 1: What you think about that, Krin More, that's totally.
- 55:24Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Now here's the thing, speaking of Kren, here's the thing
- 55:27Speaker 1: Krin has been hot on. Crin's hot on, like urban
- 55:32Speaker 1: urban rat hunting is the new flathead noodling?
- 55:40Speaker 3: Do you agree, Sydney?
- 55:43Speaker 1: Do you remember? Do you remember the way flathead noodling
- 55:48Speaker 1: just captured the collective imagination of American media. It was like,
- 55:55Speaker 1: there's always been some guys that noodle flatheads. Bercard Bilger
- 55:59Speaker 1: wrote the book Noodling for Flatheads, which is about Southern
- 56:02Speaker 1: the way Southern culture still exists in the US, and
- 56:06Speaker 1: exploration of Southern culture. And it became that every TV
- 56:11Speaker 1: host anyone on the planet over the next decade went
- 56:16Speaker 1: noodle to flathead Ryan, anyone, have you noodled flat Yeah? Okay,
- 56:22Speaker 1: I didn't, But I also never got a tattooed.
- 56:24Speaker 5: I'm not gonna lie. It was so much fun, so fun.
- 56:27Speaker 1: No, no, I'm not a down on it. I'm not
- 56:29Speaker 1: down on it. I'm just observing that it became a
- 56:31Speaker 1: media fascination.
- 56:32Speaker 5: It was it was a trend it a trend.
- 56:34Speaker 1: And right now it is a major trend and Krinn
- 56:37Speaker 1: is hot on it to go rat killing with dogs
- 56:41Speaker 1: and cities. And while noodling was supposed to be like
- 56:45Speaker 1: a city man's introduction into rural culture, this is a
- 56:50Speaker 1: rural introduction into urban culture, like you'd come from the
- 56:56Speaker 1: sticks to go see how these city boys rat killer dogs.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Like Jack Terrier's probably right.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Is Crin is really itching to have one of these
- 57:08Speaker 1: rat hunters on the show.
- 57:11Speaker 5: They're up in northern Montana, on the border of Canada,
- 57:14Speaker 5: because Jack, you might we're talking about to our front
- 57:17Speaker 5: Tie and Calgary. There's no rat population in Alberta. I
- 57:22Speaker 5: think because they just completely wiped them out. They got
- 57:24Speaker 5: them yep, with dogs maybe, but that's like in the
- 57:31Speaker 5: rit and it's on the border.
- 57:33Speaker 1: This hasn't come up with me eat a trivia. But
- 57:35Speaker 1: my understanding is Anchorage, Alaska is the large something has
- 57:39Speaker 1: some superlative it's the largest, the world's largest port city
- 57:43Speaker 1: with no rats. And when a rat shows up, they
- 57:47Speaker 1: have a ship fit they do when a rat someone
- 57:52Speaker 1: if a boat comes into the rat it's like code red.
- 57:56Speaker 1: So Krim, what are you gonna do? Are you gonna
- 57:58Speaker 1: get one of these people on or not.
- 58:00Speaker 9: No, I just want to clarify, I'm not quite sure
- 58:03Speaker 9: I want to have one of these city folks. I
- 58:06Speaker 9: just find it, No, I just find it hilarious that
- 58:09Speaker 9: major mainstream UH news organizations and newspapers seem to have
- 58:16Speaker 9: a fascination with hunting through the lens of UH you know,
- 58:23Speaker 9: city residents hunting rats with their docs. In's right, they're
- 58:30Speaker 9: all it's like you can you can just google it
- 58:32Speaker 9: and their articles in like uh New York Magazine, Washington Post,
- 58:37Speaker 9: the New York.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Times sends them all to me, I have the.
- 58:43Speaker 9: Washington posted a podcast about these rats, like it's just
- 58:46Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Text a lot, and I have to sort through all
- 58:49Speaker 1: her rat killing, all her rat the ones that interest me.
- 58:54Speaker 5: You helped to like look up the facts. But when
- 58:56Speaker 5: we're in New Zealand, we're watching the television with the news, Okay,
- 59:00Speaker 5: tell them TV Russian TV news is on. They were
- 59:03Speaker 5: having a cat killing contest, like house cat geral cats.
- 59:09Speaker 1: Yes, and they got the school kids rolled into it, yep.
- 59:11Speaker 5: And it was a tournament and they had they had
- 59:14Speaker 5: to literally cancel the tournament because some people's house cats
- 59:18Speaker 5: were actually getting killed with collars.
- 59:20Speaker 3: Then covered it.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Yeah, well we covered we didn't cover that aspect of
- 59:26Speaker 1: We covered the aspect of it that everyone was fine
- 59:28Speaker 1: with it until they got the kids involved. And then
- 59:31Speaker 1: then people got like.
- 59:32Speaker 5: There if I wasn't until they're like, where's a mister Peppers.
- 59:35Speaker 5: He was here today and he got out and he
- 59:37Speaker 5: got killed.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Well, you know what I'd say, I'd say was mister
- 59:40Speaker 1: Peppers maybe not in the.
- 59:41Speaker 5: House, but mister Peppers got out the house.
- 59:45Speaker 1: That's on him. Then it says that's on mister Pepper.
- 59:48Speaker 7: It says the kid who killed the most cats between
- 59:50Speaker 7: mid April and the end of June won a total
- 59:53Speaker 7: of one hundred and fifty five dollars.
- 59:55Speaker 1: What a time to be alive. That old fashion of
- 59:58Speaker 1: fun that was just springs right now the New Zealand
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: yesterday is today.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: If we had.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: That's nuts a Sydney earlier we were talking about I
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: was talking about we're talking about hunting as kids, and
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: you talk about growing up and like falling asleep. Oh yeah,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I under a blanket.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: And the blanket to the blind.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: So you got you got into it young.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it was more like a like how you told
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: your kids. I don't care what you're doing. Cancer plants
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: are coming with me.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Yeah, like better tell Johnny you can't make.
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: Yeah, that was how it was. But Dad, it's cold,
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: it's too early. We'll bring your blanket. You can sleep
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: on the floor. So that's what I would do, just
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: like five years old, sleeping and he'd wake me up.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: That's why I called my first turkey woke me up.
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: I shout a jake.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: He woke you up and let you know his time.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: Yep, he's like, you know, I'm like seven, I think,
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: and I shot him. Yeah, shouted jake. Did it was
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: midday snooze?
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Did you ever think it was? Was it close to backfire?
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: And what do you mean?
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: That's the whole argument people make. People say like, well,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I'm just easing my kids thin because I don't want to.
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: Backfire, not in a blackfire.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I mean I always saying, what, like was that was
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: that part of the calculus at all?
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: Like what do you for me?
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Uh no, no, it's not, it's not. I need to
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: I need to note it down. Smart ducks. I'm asking
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: a very confusing question.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: Did your like, did you eating out that early?
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Did it either like come close to turning you off,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: or did your dad worry about turning you off by
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: just being like we're going I don't care what you want.
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: No, because it made it like a natural thing, like
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: I will I. Since I was little, I had a
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: bone arrow, and so I always knew that that was
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: what we did. I had no idea. I mean for Easter.
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: We would go to Texas every year for my Easter
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: break and we would They would put out like the
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: Mexican Easter eggs where you smash them when the caffetti
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: comes out in the woods. So we would be hunting hogs.
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: We'd be walking around and there'd be Easter eggs. We'd
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: collect them and put them in so awesome, it's so
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: funny serious, and then like Thanksgiving that's where we would go,
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: we'd go back to Texas. It's like I just that
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: was a normal for me. That's what we did. That
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: was our hobby. So it wasn't like turning off. I
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: think if you started later, like maybe when kids are
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: in high school or maybe like late middle school, when
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: they already had that social connection and they already kind
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: of grew up with different hobbies or sports, that's when
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: it could maybe turn them off if you force it
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: too much, because they already kind of grew into something else.
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: But I just right from the get go, I was
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: hunting and fishing and that's all I knew. And then
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: I'd got into other sports. But in high school I
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: got a little bit more social, So it would have
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: turned me off if it was a little bit more pressured.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: But did you ever take a year long break?
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: I mean when I was in high school, I was
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: in softball and basketball, so slowed down, slowed down, and
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: I was like a little social butterfly, but I still hunted.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: And then I got to college and then I was
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: like back on the grind.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Really, Yeah, where'd you go to college?
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: I went to Illinois Wesleyan University as a private school
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: in near Illinois state. What's it called Illinois Wesleyan.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I've heard of, like Hillary Clinton go to Wesleyan.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: There's a lot of different Wesleyans. There's like an Iowa
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: An Indiana. I don't know. Probably they're like, yeah, I
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: don't know, they're all similar.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: And what kind of hunting did you do there?
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: So?
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: I was a nursing school there, and uh, I so
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: didn't have a lot of time, but I had a buddy.
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: It was my dad's friend that let me hunt his
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: property about fifteen minutes away, so I would be in
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: my scrubs and I would take him off of my
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: hunting clothes on really fast and get fifteen minutes and
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: climb up a tree and a deer hunt.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Did you finish the nursing deal up?
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a nurse, really, but I never practiced as
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: a nurse. Just a waste of money. Yeah, I'm like, dang,
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: I got these student loans. I don't even use it
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: at least.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they're going to cut everybody loose.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: That's not uncommon.
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: Oh my gosh. Yeah, but like a nurse, I could
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: have done something different. I mean, I can always fall
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: back on it. I'm very happy, but it sucked.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: You're still all the money? Yeah, I remember. It felt
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: pretty good. And I finally paid off my student loan.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: And now when they talk about forgiving everybody, I'm like, dude,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: a little late for that. I paid mine off. Yeah,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: give everybody. I want my money back, Like, why should
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I be penalized for having paid mine off?
- 1:04:16Speaker 9: Then?
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: Also everybody else gets to walk. It's totally unfair.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: It's not gonna happen. I'm just gonna have to keep
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: crying and paying it off, like I don't even use this. Dude.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: If you get years paid off, there, send me some
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: of that money. I paid my stuff, man, I paid
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: myself like an American old kind Yeah. Yeah, old style
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: pay their loans.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Well, how old are when you got your first deer?
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: I shot a button buck and I think I was
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: like eight or nine. My bow forget yeah, cross compound bow,
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: a vertical bow. Yeah, I have a picture of it.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: What's the world come to that? I have to say?
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Vertical boat compound? Yeah?
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember I was honey with an old serious Yeah.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: He recovered it.
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it was fifteen yard shot. I just
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: remember he died in like a little field right in
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: front of me.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I shot a button buck my first year with the
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: boat at twelve. So he got me beat.
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: Oh there we go, no kid. Yeah. And this old
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: man that was Honey with, he's so nice and he
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: was so excited for me.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Who was the old man?
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: He's my grandpa's friend. I don't even know.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: He just took me.
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: I have to get us to supervision.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: They're like, you take her.
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: I I was so excited. He gave me a payday,
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: and I was like, oh, you know, I'm little only
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: I hate paydays. So I pretend to like drop it,
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: you know, and they're like, oh, I dropped it. And
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: he's like, oh, it's okay, I got another one. I'll
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: never forget that, never forget that.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: So young though, man, that's young.
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Had you been shooting? Did you start shooting when you're
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: real little?
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: Yeah? We still have the little compounds.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: It's like like this big yeah, and now you probably
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: shoot it and you're like, how in the hell did
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: I kill a deer with that thing? That's that's the
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: way I look at that little town.
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: I think I got lucky. It was a button buck.
- 1:06:09Speaker 5: I don't need too much in the button book.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Well you still got I hit it.
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: I still got to hit it perfectly. Yeah, not perfect nowadays,
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: but huh. Yeah.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: And that's like your passion today is whitetail hunt.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: Yeah. It's just kind of like what we were talking
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: in the blind. It's like when you're really good at something,
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: that's something that I'm confident about, like I know what
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: I'm doing. There's other things that I like doing, like
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: waterfowl hunting. I don't know everything. I'm okay with saying
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: like I don't know everything about waterfell honety. I like
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: to go with my friends, but like that stuff's my
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: bread and butter. So that's why I love it so much.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: And how much time do you put it into it
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: every year?
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: I mean a lot. I one year I hunted ninety
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: days straight because my white tail I didn't kill until.
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: January ninety days straight.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: That was when I just graduated college and I was
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: trying to like make video and get into this content
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: creation and I really wanted to kill a big white
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: ill and I did it finally like two days.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Started to lose your mind.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. I was just destroyed. I was the only
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: one in the family had who hadn't killed one, and
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: I was the one that hunted the most and had
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: it even fired an arrow. So it was pretty distraught,
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: but I got it done.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: Were you trying to find a specific buck.
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: Yes, his name is mister Perfect. So a lot of
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: people who followed along with my Instagram and my socials
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: and everything, they knew who mister Perfect was. And I
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: got into fifteen yards of him and he was quartered
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: towards me, and uh, he just got spooked and ran
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: off and distraught. Never killed him?
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Oh you never got him? No, where is he now?
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: Well my dad killed him the next year. But that's
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: okay because he killed him and I killed his book.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: So we just kind of flopped switch swop. Yeah, what
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: year was this going on?
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: Then twenty twenty twenty got it?
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and that buck died in twenty twenty one.
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: Mister Percy, mister perfect died in twenty twenty one. He
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: was a nine year old deer.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: Do you guys name all your deer?
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: Are big ones? Yeah? This year, we don't have any
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: deer that we've named, So we're just kind of like whatever.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Store, like, no one deserves getting talked about.
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: Yeah, well there's some, but yeah, not really. I mean
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: there's some big ones, but there's there's a home farm
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: of ours that we like are you know, my great
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: dad grew up my family grew up on and it's
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: really special to us, and we're really picky with what
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: we harvest off of the property. We're not going to
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: like over abundance harvest the deer. Like if there's a
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: nice four and a half year old five year old,
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: we'll probably leave him, you know. But the big bucks
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: we killed last year were eight and nine, so they
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: were old deer that we were after for multiply multiple years.
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: They kept tricking us, so that's yeah, that's when we
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: we named them. And then we killed our two big
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: ones last year, and then this year is just kind
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: of up and comers. We call it the what did I?
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: What did we say? My dad and I were hunting.
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: We called it one hundred acres and there's just like
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: that's where all the little spikes live. There's like twenty
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: spikes running around. They're like, well, we just need to
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: go to a different property. We're gonna let this one
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: grow for a couple of years.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: At that age, they walk around looking up, don't they.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Yeah, there's they're just walking around. They're gonna stand five
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: yards from me and just.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Like, well, I'm saying that eight or nine years old.
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: Oh oh yeah, like that knows the look.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: He knows to check the trees before he goes.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: Absolutely. I was hunting this aercup we called six pack,
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: and he was perfect. He was a pretty twelve pointer. Okay,
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: he was like seven years old. This dough is in
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: the middle of the rut. She came right under my
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: stand five yards I'm like, holy shit, he's coming. He came,
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: stopped fifteen yards and was just looking up and then
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: just turned around and walked away and never got a
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: shot at him. A lady, I killed him, but I
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: killed him next year in the rut. So I was like,
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: I love.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Who gets to have the n who gets dames come natural?
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: My dad names him. I'm like, all right, let's roll
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: with it.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: Got you?
- 1:09:50Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: Do you get a lot of deers showing up in
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: the rut that you don't see?
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: Yes, that's why we love the road. We have a
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: couple pieces that we hunt that you know, but but
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: up there some neighbors or some reserves, and that's when
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: it's just like game on, like this time of the year.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: That's my favorite place is to hunt suks you just
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: don't know. And I love places where there's no trail cameras.
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: Yeah, because.
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I think trail cameras honestly ruin it for you.
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: They think they ruin it like you. You're constantly looking
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: at him. I mean I'm constantly looking at him. I'm like,
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: were they popping up? So when it's an area where
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: I can hang a new stand or getting a climber
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: and I'm like, I have no idea what's been coming
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: in here. I can look at the tracks, look at
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: the sign, and then who knows what's coming coming to me?
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: I feel like they prevent you from going hunting too,
- 1:10:37Speaker 7: because if you don't have anything on your trail camera,
- 1:10:39Speaker 7: I'm you gonna go hunting and sit in that stand.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Yeah, but you can miss, you can miss some like
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I gotta I almost gotta like. I thought of this
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: the other day. I was on my and drive my
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: jet boat down the river, and I was like, there's
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: nothing sounds better than your own jet boat, and nothing
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: sounds worse than someone else's jet boat. I feel like
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: trail cameras nothing better than your own trail camera, nothing
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: worse than you'd like, you don't be sweet if I
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: was the only guy that knew about these, because I like,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: I love setting them out and looking at them. The
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: only time I wound up with a problem with them
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: is if you're in one of the states where and
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: use cellular and you're hunting and you got one, and
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: you're hunt with one of those people that's just constantly
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: telling you what's going on, Like, look at what happened
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: while you were right, yes, the minute you you know,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: if you'd have gone left and not right, look what
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: after a while? Just that's great. You can't tell me
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: anymore because it's it's detracting from my experience, you know.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: And it's like it'd be like when we had babies.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: I'd always want to know what they were going to be, right,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: like boy, girl, whatever, because they know and I didn't
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: want to. I don't like anything like why would the
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: doctor know? But I don't know. So people would want
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: to be superb. My wife like we should be surprised,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: But I can't be surprised because that guy knows. Anyways. Now,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: if he didn't know that I didn't know, that'd be fine.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: But if he knows, I need to know. Yeah, And
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: so the whole trail camp thing, even when you tell
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: someone to stop telling you, you still know they know.
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: And then you're like, okay, fine, just tell me.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, that's the only problem I have with them.
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: I mean it's nice. It's just like you talk about
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: trapping and putting them out. It's kind of fun to
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: see what's coming by and what you get trapped.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: Well, that's just that's just wildlife observation.
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: Well, I enjoy that. Yeah, and then when it comes to, oh,
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: where's all my big bucks, it's just it does ruin
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: it a little bit. Nothing shows up, be like, well,
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: I'm not going to go there. Maybe mmmm, I don't know.
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: I love it, I love hate relationship.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: I just got back from Wisconsin on my parents' property
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: and we don't have any giants walking around this year,
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: and it we have some nice ones, but it definitely
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: was like, like.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Man like because you were a trail cam and he
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: never got them right.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we we were trail cam and deer
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: that that like shooters, but usually there's like on camera
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: we have one or two giants, and we did not
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: have that this year. So I wasn't like as excited
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: when I got out there sit in the tree stand. Yeah,
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: but the thing that kind of kept me going is like,
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: you never know, it's the rut and deer can show up.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: But if we didn't have those trail cameras, I probably
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: would have hunted a little bit harder.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Well, let's revisit something. It wasn't in this in our
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: last studio, so I can't say it happened right in
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: this room. But remember we had dustin huff on. Yeah,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: who killed the huffbuck. So biggest white tail killed in
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: the in the US, right, is the second biggest in
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: the world.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: It's big.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Biggest biggest white tail typical, right, biggest typical, the biggest
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: typical white tail in the lower in the US. He
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: never got a picture.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: Of it, but he had cameras out.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: But other guys got pictures of it but didn't tell him.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: So once he killed it, he realized every time dicking
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Harry around town had a picture of it but weren't
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: telling anybody. He's like, eh, and he didn't know about it. Yeah,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: that's awesome. So it's like, you know what I mean.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: So you could be like, wow, there's no point in
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: going out, but dude.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean I still went out. Yeah, And
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: I was like, there is a chance to have something
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: like that happen in the area we're at, for sure.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: But when you don't have that deer showing up like
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: we have in the past, like big, it's just you're
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: not quite as.
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: Honestly, this year though I think not this is just
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: this year, but every year, just during their run, Like
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: we were talking, it's the best time because whenever I
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: just see a bigger deer moving. I'm like, the big
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: boys are moving as time. And that's when I took
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: Jack out with me where we didn't have the new
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: trail cameras. I had a neighbor call me and say,
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: I've seen a drop time buck in one of those fields.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: I'm like, all right, we're just gonna go over there
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: and rattle. When we had two giants come in, like
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: game on, but that's the best time.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: There's no Why why didn't you shoot those? Because they
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: weren't big enough.
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: You didn't get No, I didn't get a chance. The
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: big one came in. Uh, the wind was swirling. He
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: was in front of a bunch of tall corn stocks,
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: and I was shooting mechanical, so I didn't want to
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: shoot through the corn obviously, because you know, one nick
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: it's going the opposite direction. But he was a five
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: on one side, big two on the other. He was funky,
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: but he was very heavy, and he was probably like
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: a five and a half year old deer maybe six.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: Got my wind smart he circled you did. Yeah. I
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: was so upset because he was thirty yards but he
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: was just in front of that corn and I wasn't
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: about to chance and on a mechanical broadhead and try
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: to wound him.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: So have you had a fix?
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: You did?
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Just shot right through that corn.
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: If I had a better opening, I didn't want to.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: You know, with a mechanical you can have like a
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: little tiny sliver of something and just yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: I don't want to be crashed. But when you when
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: you say, like, like, are you like a numbers person,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: Uh like score numbers.
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: No, we don't score a dear. Okay, I've never scored
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: any my dear. Huh.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: So it just it feels like a big one.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a big it's a big dear.
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: I'm like, mass, he looks like that big body, doesn't
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: look young, got it? I'm shooting him.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Arrol's fine, Yeah, you're not like, he looks like a
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: one seventy. I'm going to hold out for a one
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: seventy five. No, that that'd be pretty big for white tails.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's pretty I mean we're in in the Midwest,
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: is nice. So we get some big bucks, but don't
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: happy with one fifty one sixty. I got two tags,
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: so got it?
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Never put a tape to one.
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: I don't even know how.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: I'm not kidding I have a little pamphlet that shows
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: you how we scored my boys antelope there today his
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: prong horn. But I I go years without scoring something.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: But whatever, a friend of mine wants to score something,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: I get real happy. I just don't personally ever score anything.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: But antelop are super easy to score.
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I could.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: See Jimmy getting way into that score.
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: Way into it. Wait, Jimmy this year, No, but he
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: wanted to.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: At that age. I was telling these guys earlier day.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: At that age, they're real into like him and all
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: the kids at school that hunt. They're real into like
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: who got what with what caliber rifle? Yeah, so it'd
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: be like I'd love that. Though Cayden got a buck
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: with a six five creed where I don't know, I
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: don't know. It's just like the whole point, the whole
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: point is.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: What Jimmy got one within mag and it didn't have
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: a muscle break.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, they're all like gun riders performed flawlessly. I remember
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a dude bragging to me one time. It was a
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: dude in Canada bragging to me that his kid killed
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: an elk with the two forty three. I was like, Wow,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: that's something. And later I met the kid was talking
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: to He shot it nine times. This was the dad
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: left eye.
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: Oh no. The kids they're just like yes.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: He's like, I try to die by the time I
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: was old. Man just didn't tell me that. That's the
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: thing I have too in my kids. He's like, what
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: a blank kill a blank? Always? Could you kill a
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: bear of the twenty two? Kill a bear of the
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: butter knife? May have you got enough time? It's so yes,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: but no, now, uh you do a little duck hunting
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: mm hmm. But opportunistically we share. We're opportunistic duck hunters.
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: We are. I think we're similar with a variety that
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: we harvest a variety of things.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: Some have opportunistically and some of it. You put it
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: like this. He's like, it's just not where I spend
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: the energy. Yeah, you'll go, but it's not where you put.
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: The energy exactly. It's more of just I have a
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: little bit of free time, or I killed my white
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: tail and I can kind of hang out a little bit.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: My grandpa wants to go, Grandpa and I will go out.
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: Or if it's snowing, it's like ten degrees right, ten
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: mile an hour winds, snow's coming in. I'm gonna go
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: duck hunting with my.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: And you go hunt what kind of stuff?
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: And what kind of stuff?
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: Yeah, like what kind of you guys field hunting?
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: You guys hunting or flooded timber or a flooded corn.
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: Corn?
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: So it can be pretty good.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: Yeah, it can be pretty good. Yeah.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Now you a squirrel hunter? Yes, you squirrel hunting?
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: I've taken Jack, who's sitting behind me, squirrel hunting like
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: three times already this year.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Yeah. You guys just creep through the hardwoods. Or what
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: do you guys do when you're.
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: Creep through the hard woods? Listen firm jumping tree to
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: tree and shooting with my twenty two or my air gun.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: That's the noise of them jumping tree to tree.
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: They're jumping and they're barked in and they're cutting redneck
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: that noise.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: Like, I got to I han't done it in a while,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: but I got to spend spend h five nights and
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: four mornings sitting in a tree stand recently hunting and oaks,
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: you know, deer feeding on acorns and acorns, acorns and
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: per simmons. And I kind of forgot about that. You
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: know that noise Like when I was a kid, us
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: people take two quarters. Oh well no, and rub them
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: and it's supposed to be like a like but the squirrel. Yeah,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: but just you can, like sitting in that tree stand,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: you can hear them chewing a nut. Yeah, you hear them,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: not only just them calling. You're like, like, you hear
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: like off in the woods, Like what is that? You
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: realize it's a squirrel like opening a pecan. Yeah, you
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: hear his teeth. It's so quiet.
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: Are they're just so you know, they're five fired up
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: because there's a deer running underneath them, just barking their
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: heads off.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: I'm like, perfect, Yeah, it's Uh. The number of squirrels
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: you see deer hunting gives you a lesson about how
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: you ought to hunt squirrels. Yeah, if you really want
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: to hunt squirrels, you'd go and be as serious as
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: a deer hunter.
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: One thing that I do want to try. I don't
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: know if you've ever done this or anybody else has,
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: but with dogs, we've a bunch of that. I've never
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: done that.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: I don't have. I don't when I say I've done
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: a bunch of that, I've been the guy that gets
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: to tag along shooting all the squirrels.
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: Is it fun?
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Oh, it's the best thing in the world.
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: Is it cool how the dog works? Yes, say, this
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: tree and like a like a raccoon or something, it's.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: The best thing in the world.
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: They don't.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: It's different than a raccoon because you normally you got
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: usually got to look for them. Yeah, but they hear them,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: they smell them, they see them, whatever, and they're on
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: and they're on that tree. They're attacking the tree. And
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: then sometimes you got to go in and uh. Here's
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: my contribution to this discipline. I've talked two of these
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: people into the importance of carrying binoculars because then you
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: got to scrutinize the tree to find it laying up there. Yeah,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: my friends will scrutinize it with their twenty two scope,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: but I would scrutinize it with binoculars and do better.
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: But sometimes it's like, oh shit, there's a squirrel. But
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: sometimes you look and look and look and look and
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: look and look and look and determined that it went
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: into a hole. And then you yell in a hole,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: let's go, you know ho. That's that's the Southerner yelling
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: in the hole. It's so much fun.
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: All right, I'm gonna try it.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Oh, it's the It's like on a good day, sess
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: been out. Yeah, it's the greatest thing. Clay Newcomb's got
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: squirrel dogs, and my buddy Kevin Murphy has squirrel dogs
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: and we'll go out with those squirrel dogs. And I
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: even had him bring his squirrel dogs up to where
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: I grew up, because where I grew up, people didn't
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: hunt them with dogs. And I thought that it would
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: be the greatest thing in the world because of the score.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: Wouldn't be whatever, They wouldn't have evolved with that level
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: of pressure over the last one hundred years. Whatever made
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: no difference.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: And then everybody got poison ivy on the.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: Squirrels because those sons of bitches were lining their nests
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: with poison. You know when you know when it's glued,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: when poison ivy where it sticks to the tree and
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: it makes that hairy that like hairy coating. They're harvesting
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: that to line nests. We're hunting late season, they're harvesting
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: that to line nests. And the first thing that happened
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: someone took a picture of a squirrel and they're holding
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: you know, like picture that you're laying a squirrel in
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: your arm and you're holding the squirrel and you got
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: like his head coming up your the inside of your wrist,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: like yeah, And they did this for like a picture
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: in a while. Lad was that zucker while there's like
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: a squirrel outline like a crime scene. Oh it got bad.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: I mean I wound up going down and getting I
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: want it going on and getting on to deteroid treatment.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: It's not bad.
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: Everyone got it bad.
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: I don't want to do that part, but definitely with
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: the dogs.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: And then you're looking at pictures and it looks like
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: your base you like stuff and squirrels down your pants
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: and stuff like once you knew what was going on,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: you look at the pictures. She's like, ooh, el was dumb.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: That was dumb. The time I had the one around
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: my neck, that was dumb. Don't really think about that
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: little detail. No, it's fun. But the way we mostly
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: hunt when we were young and so like in Michigan,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: September fifteenth was the opening day, and when I was
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: a kid, it would end December thirty first and September
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: fifteenth would I'd be allowed to skip half a day
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: of school. I could skip a full day October one,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: which is archery opener. I could skip a full day
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: November one, which is water trapping opener. I could skip
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: a full day November fifteenth, which was rifle opener. But
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: I can only skip half the day. I'm the squirrel opener.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: And you'd go out and at that time, all the
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: leaves were on, and you just go and do a
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: good area and sit and listen, like what you're saying
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: here in acorns raining when they're beach nuts, and you'd
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: get under them. They would't even know you're there because
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: they're the leaves. The foliage is blocking them. And then
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: when the leaves felt, it just became hard, hard, hard, hard,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: hard hard. But that's the beauty of the dogs, is
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: when the leaves are down and the squirrels are paranoid
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: and they're all dead from hawks, you can still clean outs. Yeah,
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: it like really makes your season run. In fact, doesn't murphy.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: You don't even like to do it until the leaves
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: are down the dogs because when the dogs bay up,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: you need to be able to find the damn sqirrel.
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and he's one of those guys that doesn't
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: carry binocular so doesn't carry vinyls. He can't see him
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: up there. Yeah, Vinos, you can see him.
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: It is fun early season though, when you're just slowly walking,
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: so much fun.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: I used to go into the White River bottoms and
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: you could. You know, you get a limit pretty.
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: Quick, and they're so good to eat. Do you how
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: do you clean? Do you cut them in this in
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: the middle of the body or do you go from
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: the tail?
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: Yeah, we call it pants and shirt, pants and shirt?
- 1:25:54Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, I know I can. I clean them from
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: either pants and shirt or just from the tail when
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: you lift them up, tail skinning them.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: People that are good are good, but when you mess
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: one up, it's no fun. Kevin Murphy does it. He
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: paled he tails skins. Did you grow up tail, skin.
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: And seth Uh?
- 1:26:11Speaker 9: No?
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: I was shirt and pants? Yeah, shirt and pants.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: How did how did you get into barstool? That's what
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: I want to know? Like you were your dad was
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: obviously they had the media side of things going, so
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: you were involved with that, But like, how did that
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: all go down?
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: So it's really funny. I was in Oklahoma. I just
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: shot up my Oklahoma white tail, and that night I
- 1:26:38Speaker 5: was talking to my cousin and I was like, man,
- 1:26:40Speaker 5: I really want to do something on my own. I
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: don't want to be I saw the following.
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: But not from your dad's stuff.
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: Yeah. And then I had, you know, I picked up
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: some people throughout the way, and I was like, I
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: don't want to be Tim Wells's daughter. I want to
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: be Sidney Wells. I want people to know me for me,
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: not because of my dad. And I was talking to
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: my cousin about that the night before and I was
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: just like, I don't know to do. I gotta kind
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: of figure it out. I was I had no money.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: I had a little bit of saved up through working
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: throughout college. And it was so crazy because that next
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: day Dave Fortnoy tweeted was like wanted host of Barcel Outdoors.
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: I didn't see it. I had a ton of people
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: send it to me, and I was.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Like, details, we are woven into the stre we are Okay,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: that's a weird ass story.
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: You're got to tell me why we.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Can talk about it. Actually, not like no one applied.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: We're just woven into the story.
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: Because I have some questions after the cameras are off to.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: About this story that I'm trying to tell.
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: You, yeah, probably you're not gonna say it on air, Okay,
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: we'll talk about so anyways, So then I just literally
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: sent an email and just some like YouTube videos, and
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: then I met with Gaz, which is like Day's right
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: hand man, and I just told him what I do
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: and like what I would want to do. And then
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: I met with Dave and he was like a ten
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: minute conversation. He was late because he was in a
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: Jingo tournament, but no, and then he was just like, Okay, cool, yeah,
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: that's what you want to do, roll with it.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: And so he's kind of like an animal He's like
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: an hs US animal rights guy.
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: Though, Dude, he does not care what I do, which
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: is the crazy thing.
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I wanted to. I want to, like, I always wanted
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: to have like a debate with him about because I
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: know he's into like hs US and stuff. He means
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: not not not the kind of he made sightry we
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: take care of dogs, but the other kind of he
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: made society. So I feel like he is isn't he?
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: I don't I thought he's like an animal rights guy?
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: Is he not? Not? Really, he just doesn't want to
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: see it. He just he loves animals, but he doesn't.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: He doesn't love him as much as I do.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: I don't. Yeah, I don't know more, Yeah, I don't.
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: I don't know. Like fidal Berg, I don't know if
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: you John Fidelberg. He told me he's one of the
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: main guys who's been along for around for a long time.
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: He said he wrote a blog one time, I'm an
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: alligator eating a turtle, and he Dave was upset with it.
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: It had him take it off a long time ago.
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: He's like changed, Dave, because I mean I post so
- 1:29:02Speaker 5: much hunting. I mean that's all I do. Yeah, And
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: he doesn't know, and nobody will ever say, like, you
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: can't do that.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: So did anyone have any idea of like your background,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: like before you went and inns like they didn't know
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: who your dad was. They didn't know any of the stuff.
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: They didn't know anything about hunting in the fish. Actually,
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: I had a couple of the Barcelo people already following me.
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: So one of them is his name is Brandon Walker.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: He followed me. But he's from West Point, Mississippi, which
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: is where the mass Yoke headquarters are. So he's friends
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: with the mass Yoke guys. So I think he knew
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: of me he likes to fish, and maybe a couple
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: of other people, but not not really. No, they didn't.
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: Nobody really knew. But now it's kind of fun because
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: I have a series called Out of Office which all
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: my coworkers want to come and hunt and fish. They
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: have no idea. But now, like I just my one
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: of my co workers, his name is Dave called white
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: Sox Dave. He shot his first dear with me and
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: we like, you know, he brought all the meat home
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: and it was just like really exciting.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so you're being a teacher too.
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: Yeah. And then I'm going on a duck unlimited hunt
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: in January. They invited us to go, and I'm going
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: to bring two of my other coworkers who's never duck hunted.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: Cool, that's really cool.
- 1:30:07Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: So I mean I feel like I don't put pressure
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: on anybody either, Like I'm not ever going to do
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: that if you're not comfortable with it, Like I'm not
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: gonna make you do anything but the doors open. I'll
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: teach you, I'll help you. We won't do things crazy
- 1:30:19Speaker 5: off the get go. I want you to like it
- 1:30:21Speaker 5: and not be freaked out, just like going squirrel hunting,
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: like that kind of small thing, and they're all interested.
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: I have had anybody be like what the heck?
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: And you guys will film a lot of like Jack, Yeah.
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: We film it all.
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Want you introduce Jack back here? Poor guy?
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: Oh yeah, this is Jack. Jack or Landy come here and.
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: Say hi, Hello, meat eater world.
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's really fun. I think I've introduced the
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: sport a lot to Barstool and like the audience, and
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: been able to show our coworkers who may have not
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: maybe wanted to hunt or even thought about it, or
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: maybe even a disagreed to act, enjoy it, which is
- 1:31:01Speaker 5: really fun.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: So yeah, how long have been?
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: Three years? Almost three years? In February?
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: What were the questions you said you wanted to ask
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: us when I said I was gonna tell you a
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: story later.
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: Well, I'm gonna talk to you about it later. But
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: what I'm not gonna say it you can ask me
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: a question.
- 1:31:21Speaker 6: Maybe started to play warmer and colder. I gotta standoff, start.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: Like who's gonna gave first? That's a question. Standoff? Now
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: did your life change through all this stuff of like
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: of Barstool getting sold to a casino and then the
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: casino giving it back. Did this change your life at all?
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: No? At first I was scared because Penn owned a
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: hundred percent of it, you know, for a second before
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: they get it give it back to him for a dollar.
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: That's when I got nervous. Dave bought it back for Yeah,
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: So that's that's when I was nervous.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: Anybody can read it. You don't need to. It's not
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: gonna change your life.
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: They just, you know, we were more of a corporation.
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: They were going to you know, insurance, and I was
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: a bigger brand with sponsors, so.
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: They have insurance before that we did.
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: I don't know, maybe they're I'm insured probably right, oh
- 1:32:22Speaker 5: that stuff. I have health insurance. So I'm saying like
- 1:32:25Speaker 5: they were scared that somebody who's gonna get shot on
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: a shoe.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: Oh that kind of insurance. But I like your company
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: had an insurance.
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: No, no, no, no, no, just like liability. Yeah, but
- 1:32:35Speaker 5: it's hard. I told him, like, I hunt every day,
- 1:32:39Speaker 5: so you can't have somebody on site with me every day. Also,
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: you're gonna have somebody to tree stand with me because.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: You want to get an insurance. Man excited that, No,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: it's not the insurance man be like, dude, I've seen
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: the numbers.
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: I'm not going.
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: No, pen is great. But I think we're all pretty happy, Daves.
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: We're all happy Dave's has.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: So do you find all stuff just by reading the news?
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: You're like, oh, that happened.
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: No, we have like meetings, but sometimes yeah, I'm like whoa, Like, no,
- 1:33:15Speaker 5: we got it all figured out. Everybody talks to one another,
- 1:33:17Speaker 5: which is nice.
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: Yeah. How how connected are you with the the The
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: main office is in New York right.
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: It's moved. Yeah, so there's like two main ones now,
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: so Chicago and New York. So so some people are
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: there Dave's. I don't know what Dave's plan is. I
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: think he's still in Miami. And then Big Cat and
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: some of the other guys just went to Chicago. So
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: we've got a big Chicago office and I'm still connected.
- 1:33:40Speaker 5: But this time of the year, I'm not really in
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: the office. I'd rather be out hunting and filming.
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't. So when you're in the office, you're
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: in the Chicago Yeah.
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:33:48Speaker 4: How many people work there?
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: Oh jeez, I think we have like three hundred employees.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Now, whose studio is better? The studio Space podcast.
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: Don't ask that I'm in the Chicago off.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: This is just like way better than the studio.
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: I haven't been in any of the studios yet because
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: it just opened.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Let's Phil be the judge of this.
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: But the Chicago office is gonna badass. Maybe we got
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: a full court basketball.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Court and I'm talking about the studio.
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: Probably part of my take is probably going to be
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: the best.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Well, listen, I was recently in some real I was
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: recently in some really fancy studios. Yeah, they had a muscos.
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: They got a buffalo and the buffalo shot in the
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: head with the bull?
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: Is that no blackbird?
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: A couple of k They got a squirrel bottle heater?
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: What about the leather.
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: Studio?
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: This is the best happened. We recently had a wake
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: up call. I think I told you about this earlier.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: We went to some fancy studios and and and Phil
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: felt like he was getting studio shamed. Oh no, remember that, Phil.
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: I mean I I wasn't mad. It was a very
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: comfortable experience, but.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Then later confided me that some of those studios weren't
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: all that. Oh well, I mean, the spaces themselves are
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: are spectacular, but the microphones just.
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: The coffin.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: I'll say this isn't in Phil's words, but some of
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: these studios were all hat no cattle, the cattle being
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: the mic, wouldn't you say, Phil.
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: Yeah's a good way to put it.
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: Exactly, how damn good mics.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: I seem like he spit a big dip stream out.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: I think my seats.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: He still walked in and said, so, uh, what's the
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: Some of the stuff we were talking about, some of
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: the stuff you'd like to do that you'd like to
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: do in the future, like trips you'd like to go on.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: You mentioned how you kind of have a sort of
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: an interest in South America.
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: Yeah, well I've been to South America, so I've already like,
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: oh you.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: Know, no, it was not that you brought up fishing doratto. Ye, Yeah,
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: that's interesting.
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: I would like to do that.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: What else is interesting?
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: Neil Guy talked about shooting Neil Guy down in Texas
- 1:36:00Speaker 5: to you guys know what Neil Guy is? Yeah, I
- 1:36:02Speaker 5: think just a story about Neil guys.
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: Is really interesting down here.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: Oh there, just hold it up.
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: So if you don't know, if you're listening to what
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: a Neil Guy is, go google it. It's really cool.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: And tell him none of that. Just go to YouTube
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: and look at what right now, Yeah, it came like
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: that we skinned it and that was under the meat.
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: No, kid, that's a nice We're all surprised you shoot that.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: That's a deadhead.
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: Oh it is nice one.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: Well, I shot a nice one.
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: I accidentally got a nice one. You don't to accidentally
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: get a nice something.
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: Yeah, you're like, oh, this is good, but you get it.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: And there was like holy shit, and I'm like, oh
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: the great.
- 1:36:48Speaker 5: But this is a story, you know, like COO's deer
- 1:36:50Speaker 5: anark Hello, Couzier would love to kill a coups deer.
- 1:36:53Speaker 5: My dad and his buddy went to Mexico to shoot
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: COO's deer and his buddy shot his first cous deer.
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: It was like one hundred and twenty inches.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: You got to ask.
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: And he's like my dad was, you know, like holy
- 1:37:03Speaker 5: everybody's oh my gosh. And he's like, oh is this good?
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: Accidentally get the big one. Yeah, I accidentally got so
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: I got a nice one. That's a nice one that
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: was found as a deadhead.
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: That's a nice one, yea.
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: I have my other one, My my other accidental nice
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: one is at my house. But if you want to
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: go hunting Couzier, you can come hunting COOZI you with thoughts.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: We go in January. You can't come this January, but
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: next January. Next January, I'm serious, We're at we go
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: to Sonora.
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: Okay, I would love to. I've never killed one. I
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: really want to.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: Don't shoot a big one.
- 1:37:36Speaker 5: I'll try not to, don't accidentally.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: Probably won't even know.
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: You're gonna be like.
- 1:37:41Speaker 6: We just tell you like that is huge and if
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: you don't measure it, you'll never know.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Okay, scenario, it will just be like they told me
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: it was giant. All right, they told me it was
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: a giant. Nokay, what other? What other kind of dream
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: things like cool trips?
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: You want to do a grizzly bear. I haven't killed
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: an elk. I need to kill an elk. I don't know.
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: There's a lot. Probably I don't know if I have
- 1:38:07Speaker 5: a desire to kill a sheep or not. A caribou
- 1:38:10Speaker 5: would be cool. I think I just need to start
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: out west thone. Do like the smaller things like the coos,
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: and not smaller, but the kousier, the elk. Have you
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: done it never done anything in Alaska like a blacktail.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I like to do that.
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: I just would love to just kill a grizzly too.
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: I think I would be really nervous. I had a
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: black bear climb a tree with me when I was younger.
- 1:38:33Speaker 5: Scared me. Use I think I'll be really nervous to
- 1:38:36Speaker 5: see grizzly up close. But I really want to do
- 1:38:39Speaker 5: that and with my bow.
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: Didn't your dad spear grizzly?
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I took him like like ten trips or something.
- 1:38:47Speaker 5: It was a lot. It was hard. You know, you
- 1:38:48Speaker 5: got to get it right under you.
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: I can't imagine that.
- 1:38:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I would freak out.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's an alpha dog. I was gonna ask
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: you a bunch of stuff. But he spared a wolf,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: but he's.
- 1:39:01Speaker 5: Not I would like to kill a wolf. Oh, I
- 1:39:03Speaker 5: don't know if he's ner.
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: Dad speared himself.
- 1:39:06Speaker 5: He spared himself. Yeah.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Do you mind talking about that for it?
- 1:39:08Speaker 5: Yeah? I can talk about that. So with the spear,
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: he's always really good at making sure I mean that
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: those things are you know this, this like this, and
- 1:39:17Speaker 5: it's super sharp. You know, he goes right through an
- 1:39:18Speaker 5: animal right when they're underneath you. Die instantly, super deadly
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: with him. When he keeps it in his tree, he
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: always make sure it's somewhere safe. Maybe gets out, it's
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: not gonna fall. Well, he wasn't thinking. He just climbed
- 1:39:32Speaker 5: up this tree in Africa. He dropped a GoPro. Well,
- 1:39:34Speaker 5: in Africa, they have really good sense and they're really smart.
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: So he didn't want to keep that on the ground,
- 1:39:39Speaker 5: so we jumped out of the tree. When he did,
- 1:39:41Speaker 5: he shook the tree and it went right through hit
- 1:39:44Speaker 5: his ball cap, went right through his leg. You talked
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: about the tourniquet earlier. He took off his pants, put
- 1:39:50Speaker 5: his belt, made a tourniquet, and he barely missed his
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: memoral artery. Lay there for six hours, his water and
- 1:39:58Speaker 5: his walkie talkie. You were up there. He made sure
- 1:40:00Speaker 5: that he stayed conscious. He didn't want to go He felt
- 1:40:03Speaker 5: his body going into shock, so he didn't want to
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: go in too shock because if he went in shock
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: could have been deadly obviously, and then he's in Africa.
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: You don't know what's going to come around. Smell of
- 1:40:12Speaker 5: blood and he's just wounded. Yeah, So he stayed there
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: for six hours and he ended up pulling the spear
- 1:40:18Speaker 5: out of his leg, but they found him. He went
- 1:40:21Speaker 5: and got stitched up. He didn't have surgery or anything,
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: but they gave him the really really like potent antibiotics.
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: It's illegal in the States, but in Africa was not,
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: so they gave him these antibi biotics. And when he
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: got back to the States, the doctor told him that
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: it's he's lucky that he got those antibiotics because they
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: pretty much killed everything and saved his leg. Yeah, infection,
- 1:40:47Speaker 5: I mean he killed a bunch of animals with it
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: and antibiotics and the antibiotics and the States probably wouldn't
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: have been as strong and he could have just lost
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: his leg from infection.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I just thought of the thing I was gonna
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: I was gonna make the thing I was gonna tell
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: you an interesting thing, And then I remember that the
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: person that told me made me swear not to tell anybody.
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: Got it?
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: All right, Well, we can talk about that off camera,
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: but no, the spear like, I mean, yeah, he spares
- 1:41:14Speaker 5: a lot of things, and he's really good at keep
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: making sure. I spirited a black bear when I was
- 1:41:18Speaker 5: younger in Canada too, so we're always making sure it's
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: safe because those dang spears, I mean their deadly goes
- 1:41:24Speaker 5: on an animal and instantly. That's the one thing that's
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: great about them is it didn't.
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: They killed quick.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: So you killed one with a spear? Is it a
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: weighted spear? Like?
- 1:41:34Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: Like is the shaft weighted? Is this shaft like got
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: lead or embedded?
- 1:41:39Speaker 5: And you would know he would know more, but I don't.
- 1:41:42Speaker 5: I don't know, to be honest, I don't know the
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: whole Diana dynamic of the spirit.
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: There's a really I don't want to say it's good.
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: There's a documentary and I don't want to say it's
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: a great documentary because it's just it covers something interesting,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: but it doesn't cover it in the in a perfect way.
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: But it covers these Indo Nesian harpooners that they still
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: they still fish dolphin. I don't mean like mahi mahi,
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: but like porpoises. Man arrays sperm whales with harpoons and
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: they don't use a harpoon gun, and they don't use
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: a weighted harpoon. That harpooner goes overboard with that harpoon. No,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: he's up on the bow. I mean there's a ton
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: of on the bow and when they get on that whale,
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: that dude drives, that dude lands with the spear to
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: land and place the spear.
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: On.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: He's in on the whale. That's another power play. And
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: these guys like they're they are whalers and they try.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: The movie has this sort of like a little bit
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: of a tenuous It has this sort of tenuous environmental
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: messages that I wasn't totally I need to spend more
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: time on because it was basically this culture hadn't practiced
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: sustainable fishing practices and had like destroyed their fishery and
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: that drove them to being marine mammal hunters. And I
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: a little bit questioned that because that's a tremendous amount
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: of know how. Yeah, and I just couldn't picture that
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: that's really that this wasn't more of an ancestral behavior.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: It's hard for me to pick up that in the
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: modern era, someone like sort of crafted this harpooning culture
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: because the fishery, I just like, you know, I don't
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: know that that's right or wrong, and I'm sure eight people
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: are write in and set me straight on it. But
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: he lays that out, and I remember a little bit
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: thinking like I need to spend more time on that.
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: Well, we all have that in our like our blood instinctually,
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: like hunting, whether you're a hunter or not. If I
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: don't know if you agree with that, sure, yeah.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: When I'm sitting there and jigging hal a bit and
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: in a humpback comes by. No. No, I never do,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: but I always comment on it you think about doing it,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: I'll say to my kids, can you just imagine? Because
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: we carry a harpoon for landing. You know, it's basically
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: like a you're basically gaffing. You're gaffing of fishes on
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: a hook, but it's just you just deliver the gaff
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: with a harpoon chef. If it's not like, you're not
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: like harpooning it, you're like, what do you call it?
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: Just like a togglehead that comes off a harpoon chef,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: so you just poke it. Yeah. Anyhow, I'll always always
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: comment to my kids, can you imagine sticking up? It's
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: crazy and then just going for a ride.
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: You need a bigger skiff.
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: Oh, I would never do it, but it always like
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: something deep in me, something deep, some evil, deep thing
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: in me wonders about what would be like to just.
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: To, but you.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: Don't care if it's evil.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: I can't even finish the sentence.
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: Maybe it is evil, you hear me, I keep going
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: just to.
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: Can you imagine just one time Sidney Phil's throwing up
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: a sign and says three minutes.
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: You know, I was trying to keep that on the download.
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: That's why I held up a sign without saying.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: Tell people, Tell people, tell people how to find you?
- 1:45:42Speaker 5: Okay, you can find me all over social media. You
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: can spell my name s Y D N.
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: I E, which is how you spell it, which is how.
- 1:45:48Speaker 5: I spell it, spell it right, Sidney Wells or anywhere
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: on barcelwell Doors, so YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, all the above.
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: Thanks for coming on, man, Thanks for having me today.
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: It was a good day.
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: About duck hunting.
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: Yeah, and now we're going back to Illinois.
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: So well, I'm not you are well?
- 1:46:04Speaker 5: I am?
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:46:05Speaker 5: Hopefully you can see me with the big old buck.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: Yep, and we both al big thanks to Brady Davis
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: from Flying V the best. I had a great time
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: basically telling us where to point and.
- 1:46:13Speaker 5: Shoot and clean it up, clean it up.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: And he's still going to go clean up.
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: We didn't even big our own decoys up.
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: I did kind of help set him out.
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: I was talking about I mean you said that. I
- 1:46:24Speaker 5: was talking about, like, you know, our bird clean up
- 1:46:26Speaker 5: when we're missing, and he's just like, don't guys, I
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: got this gage.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: I think I meant the fact that he now has
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: to go and like pick up empty shells and decoys.
- 1:46:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Sorry, No, we were on a bit of a time.
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: He's very time conscious. Dane and I are headed back
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: to go pick up the spread all his other attributes,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: and he's time conscious.
- 1:46:42Speaker 4: Yea, such a good great guy.
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: Gets you where, get you your dogs, gets you where
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: you need to be at noon. You gotta be on
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: time in life.
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: Yep, that's right.
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: Thanks everybody.
- 1:47:02Speaker 8: On the seal, Ray shine like silver in the sun.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: Ride Ride, Ride on along, sweetheart.
- 1:47:21Speaker 8: Were done beat this damn horse to death. Taking a
- 1:47:26Speaker 8: new one.

- 1:47:31Speaker 8: We're done beat this damn horse today, So take a
- 1:47:37Speaker 8: new one and ride on.
