- 0:32This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:34podcast, and we are recording live at the
- 0:36thirteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable.
- 0:39I'm currently joined by Kelly Wells, who is
- 0:41the VP of clinical applications at Indiana University
- 0:43Health. So, Kelly, thanks for being here. I'm
- 0:46gonna have you start off by introducing yourself
- 0:47a little bit more and telling us more
- 0:49about your background. Sure. Thanks for having me.
- 0:52So like you said, I'm the VP for
- 0:54clinical applications for IU Health. We're a 17
- 0:56hospital system in in Indiana.
- 0:59I oversee all of our clinical applications, so
- 1:01that includes our EMR, our, imaging systems, those
- 1:04type of things.
- 1:06I am pharmacist by background, so,
- 1:09kinda kinda ended up in IT by accident.
- 1:11I,
- 1:13was implementing a lot of systems,
- 1:15as the pharmacist
- 1:16and just kind of over time, moved into
- 1:19IT and have been doing this for about
- 1:21ten years now.
- 1:22Wonderful. Well, thanks for taking the time to
- 1:24be here.
- 1:25And let's have you start off by talking
- 1:27a little bit about your growth strategy over
- 1:29the next year or two. Yeah. So IU
- 1:31Health is in rapid growth. We have, we've
- 1:34really put we've kinda gone gone all in
- 1:37on building. So we have a new academic
- 1:40adult academic health center, Downtown Indianapolis,
- 1:43and that's a consolidation of two hospitals that
- 1:45are coming together. So that will open in
- 1:472027,
- 1:49and we've spent a lot of time trying
- 1:50to, make sure that that building is gonna
- 1:52be smart. We're gonna have all the newest
- 1:54technology. So really spending a lot of time
- 1:56on that. We also have a new hospital
- 1:58in Fort Wayne, Indiana
- 2:00and a, cancer center and another hospital in,
- 2:03in Lafayette. So we
- 2:05have we have lots of growth going on.
- 2:07In the meantime, of course, we're trying to
- 2:09also
- 2:10roll out new programs and all that. So
- 2:12it it has been a pretty busy time
- 2:14for us.
- 2:15And tell us about the most exciting
- 2:17or impactful initiative or project that you're working
- 2:20on right now. Well, for me, it is,
- 2:22our epic conversion. So we have been an,
- 2:25Oracle Health Cerner client for about twenty five
- 2:27years. And so we have deep, deep, deep
- 2:29knowledge with Cerner.
- 2:31And, we made the decision. We announced last
- 2:34at the end of last year that we
- 2:35were switching to Epic. We go live 05/01/2027.
- 2:39We're doing it as an operationally led project.
- 2:41So we have,
- 2:43kind of the ex president of our medical
- 2:45group is running the project, but you've got
- 2:48a bunch of IT people behind him, that
- 2:50are helping with that. We actually took our
- 2:52team. My team had,
- 2:54probably 250 people supporting all of our applications.
- 2:57About a 140 of them went over,
- 3:00to that Epic team, went through all the
- 3:01training,
- 3:03and we're kind of in that legacy support.
- 3:05So we're trying to manage,
- 3:07still the requests of the business, but at
- 3:09the same time, trying to figure out how
- 3:11to how to obviously deliver Epic on time
- 3:13and on budget. So,
- 3:15it it is very exciting time for IU
- 3:17Health.
- 3:18Wonderful.
- 3:19And what is the most important thing you
- 3:21think that health executives
- 3:23should be doing right now to make sure
- 3:24their organizations are successful in the future?
- 3:27I think, really, as you've kinda seen in
- 3:30this conference, there's so much AI that's kinda
- 3:32been the theme. Right? And, of course, being
- 3:34an IT person, this is, you know, this
- 3:36is important to me. But, you know, as
- 3:38you grow,
- 3:39I in some sometimes you don't necessarily see
- 3:43the spend in the IT space actually go
- 3:45up, as a percentage of your revenue. So
- 3:47I think really spending some time understanding, okay,
- 3:50where do we want to invest? If we're
- 3:51going to invest in these AI products, which
- 3:54can can have great benefits,
- 3:56you know, either either with your clinicians or
- 3:59it could be, you know, back office type
- 4:01things.
- 4:02It takes IT people behind that to kinda
- 4:04make that happen. So, you know, just making
- 4:05sure that you're building that infrastructure properly
- 4:08so that we can,
- 4:10that we can deliver and and support our
- 4:12users.
- 4:13Wonderful. Well, Kelly, thanks so much for joining
- 4:15me today on the Becker's healthcare podcast. Again,
- 4:17we are recording live at the thirteenth annual
- 4:19CEO and CFO roundtable.
- 4:21Thank you.
