- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.

- 0:28Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:33Service, and Love.
- 0:35In the last episode, I used this metaphor
- 0:37of a soup, that we have a kind
- 0:38of discernment soup.
- 0:40When we need to make a career decision,
- 0:41there's different questions that we're asking, which are
- 0:43the ingredients in this discernment soup.
- 0:46And a question that we often ask is,
- 0:48what is God calling me to do?
- 0:50Good question, totally fine to ask, but sometimes
- 0:52not the most important question.
- 0:54So some other ingredients in this soup that
- 0:56might even matter more for the overall mix
- 0:59in the soup are questions like, who is
- 1:01God calling me to become?
- 1:02That question of Christ-like character.
- 1:04Also, where is God calling me to go?
- 1:07Or is God calling me to stay?
- 1:09That question of the community we're in and
- 1:10our place in it.
- 1:12And I want to add another ingredient in
- 1:14this episode, and that's this question, who is
- 1:17God calling me to love?
- 1:19Now the way that I asked that, you
- 1:21might think about romantic love, and we will
- 1:24get there.
- 1:24I have an illustration that's about marriage as
- 1:26one point in this, but I don't actually
- 1:28primarily mean romantic love.
- 1:29I mean that bigger scriptural call to love
- 1:32our neighbors as ourselves.
- 1:34And again, in this series, we're thinking about
- 1:36meaning, what makes our work meaningful.
- 1:38Often the cultural assumption in our context, especially
- 1:41if we're highly educated, especially if we have
- 1:43some socioeconomic means, is that we derive our
- 1:47meaning through individual achievement.
- 1:49We conceptualize our career as a ladder that
- 1:51we climb from one degree of glory to
- 1:54another, so to speak, from one rank to
- 1:56another, from one point of influence to another,
- 1:58from one point of compensation and salary to
- 2:01another.
- 2:01And we conceptualize the meaning of our career
- 2:03in very individualistic terms.
- 2:05What we can tend to undervalue in our
- 2:08cultural context is deriving meaning from participating in
- 2:11a community.
- 2:13And one of the points that's so important
- 2:15in a community is this idea of reciprocity,
- 2:18of being mutually known and loved by others.
- 2:21Now, that doesn't mean we only love others
- 2:23if they love us, right?
- 2:25Rather, it means we take the initiative to
- 2:26love, as Jesus taught.
- 2:27We love our neighbors as ourselves.
- 2:30But we're also known when we do that.
- 2:32When we take time to love our neighbors
- 2:34as ourselves, we become known within a context
- 2:37of a network of relationships.
- 2:39And that's actually how God designed for us
- 2:41to thrive as human beings.
- 2:43So I want to take some time and
- 2:45look at kind of three different stories that
- 2:48I think can help all of us ask
- 2:50this question.
- 2:51Who is God calling me to love?
- 2:53And again, I encourage you when you're at
- 2:55a career decision point, when you need to
- 2:58make a decision about where to go in
- 2:59your career, this can be one of those
- 3:01questions that's helpful to ask, helpful to frame
- 3:04the whole conversation in terms of who is
- 3:07God calling me to love.
- 3:09OK, so our first example comes from the
- 3:12book of Ruth in the Bible.
- 3:13Just real quick review in case you haven't
- 3:15read Ruth in a while.
- 3:17Ruth was not an Israelite.
- 3:18She was from a nation called Moab, which
- 3:20was near Israel.
- 3:22But her mother-in-law was an Israelite,
- 3:24Naomi.
- 3:26Unfortunately, Naomi, her husband, died and then Ruth's
- 3:29husband died.
- 3:30And Ruth also had a sister who was
- 3:32in the mix and her husband died, too.
- 3:33So we have three widows, one mother-in
- 3:35-law, two daughters-in-law.
- 3:38Because Naomi is widowed, she decides to return
- 3:40to Israel and she says to her daughters
- 3:42-in-law, look, don't follow after me.
- 3:44You go back home.
- 3:45One of her daughters-in-law decides, OK,
- 3:47yeah, I'm going to go back, maybe find
- 3:48a different husband in Moab, figure out my
- 3:50life here.
- 3:51But this is not Ruth's response.
- 3:53This is not Ruth's response.
- 3:55Even though Ruth has every reason to just
- 3:58stay in Moab, not to go with Naomi
- 4:00to Israel, she doesn't have a family duty
- 4:02that particularly means she has to go with
- 4:05Naomi at this point.
- 4:06She has some sort of intuition that she's
- 4:09supposed to stick with Naomi.
- 4:10So this is what Naomi says.
- 4:12And then Ruth's response, Ruth chapter one, starting
- 4:15in verse 15.
- 4:16Look, said Naomi, your sister-in-law is
- 4:18going back to her people and her gods.
- 4:20Go back with her.
- 4:22But Ruth replied, don't urge me to leave
- 4:24you or to turn back from you.
- 4:27Where you go, I will go.
- 4:28And where you stay, I will stay.
- 4:31Your people will be my people and your
- 4:33God, my God.
- 4:35Where you die, I will die.
- 4:37And there I will be buried.
- 4:38May the Lord deal with me, be it
- 4:40ever so severely, if even death separates you
- 4:43and me.
- 4:46What an incredible statement.
- 4:48These almost sound like marriage vows.
- 4:50And in fact, sometimes these verses are used
- 4:52in marriage vows because it's a statement of
- 4:54lifelong commitment.
- 4:55Where you die, I will die.
- 4:57And there I will be buried.
- 4:59Why does Ruth commit to Naomi in this
- 5:01way?
- 5:02Well, it's not entirely clear what's going on
- 5:04in Ruth's mind and heart at this moment,
- 5:06but it's clear that something is happening where
- 5:08it becomes clear to her.
- 5:09I need to stick with Naomi.
- 5:12And what we see as the story goes
- 5:14on is that God was at work bringing
- 5:17Ruth into Israel, that Ruth and Naomi's return
- 5:20to Israel actually gets tied in with God's
- 5:22entire saving work, ultimately culminating in the coming
- 5:25of Jesus.
- 5:26Because Ruth, she ends up marrying an Israelite
- 5:29named Boaz and they have a son and
- 5:32that son has a son and that son
- 5:33has a son whose name is David, who
- 5:35becomes the King David, who becomes the ancestor
- 5:37of Jesus, the King of Israel, the Messiah.
- 5:40And so Ruth's moment, whatever's stirring in her
- 5:43heart in this moment of thinking, I've got
- 5:46to stick with Naomi, that intuition, that leads
- 5:50to her being involved in God's saving work
- 5:53for the whole world.
- 5:55So what I want to suggest is that
- 5:57sometimes we get an intuition and it may
- 6:00not be an obvious clear cut thing where
- 6:02we have some sort of clear moral obligation
- 6:04to a specific person, but we just have
- 6:07this sense from the Lord, like I need
- 6:08to stick with this person and maybe it
- 6:11is a family member.
- 6:11Maybe it is someone like a mother-in
- 6:13-law or a cousin or a niece or
- 6:15a nephew or a sibling, but maybe it's
- 6:18somebody else.
- 6:18Maybe it's somebody beyond your family network.
- 6:20And you just have this sense like, I
- 6:22need to stick with this person.
- 6:23I need to show up for them.
- 6:25I need to love them.
- 6:27This is who God is calling me to
- 6:28love.
- 6:28And I'm going to stick with them, even
- 6:31if it means I have to miss out
- 6:32on other opportunities.
- 6:34This is where the rubber meets the road,
- 6:35right?
- 6:36Is that sense of what does it cost
- 6:38to love other people?
- 6:39Ruth had to make significant sacrifices.
- 6:41She became an immigrant.
- 6:43She left the culture that she knew.
- 6:44She left other family connections like her sister.
- 6:47And she had to take great risk in
- 6:49making this move to stick with Naomi.
- 6:52Are we willing to take risks to love
- 6:54other people?
- 6:55Maybe that would look like foregoing a certain
- 6:57job opportunity.
- 6:58Again, as we're thinking about career discernment, maybe
- 7:01you have an incredible job opportunity that's offered
- 7:05to you, but it would involve relocating.
- 7:08And you realize if I relocate, I won't
- 7:10be there to care for my in-laws.
- 7:12Maybe they're in poor health.
- 7:13And you think, you know, I'm going to
- 7:16let go of that opportunity because I feel
- 7:18like God's calling me to stick with my
- 7:20in-laws.
- 7:21Again, every situation requires a discernment.
- 7:23You can't solve these things with a formula
- 7:25that's going to give you all the answers
- 7:26in advance.
- 7:27But we can have paradigms that help us
- 7:29imagine what would it be like to be
- 7:31faithful in a given situation?
- 7:34Okay.
- 7:34So second story, another paradigm.
- 7:37This is another story of somebody getting that
- 7:39intuition that they need to stick with someone.
- 7:41But this actually comes from my own network
- 7:44of relationships.
- 7:46A acquaintance, friend of mine named David.
- 7:48I went to church with him for many
- 7:49years, not a super close friend, but I
- 7:50got to know his story and it's just
- 7:53so incredible.
- 7:53So David, when he was a young man,
- 7:55he was finishing up school.
- 7:56He was an artist.
- 7:57He's always been an artist.
- 7:58He wanted to pursue art as his career.
- 8:01But he kind of moved back home to
- 8:03a city called Elmhurst where he had grown
- 8:05up.
- 8:05And he realized there was a gentleman in
- 8:08his church named Tom who did not have
- 8:11anyone to care for him.
- 8:12And Tom had some specific needs because he
- 8:14had had a traumatic brain injury as a
- 8:16child.
- 8:16So he had about the cognitive abilities of
- 8:18a 10 year old, but he was by
- 8:20himself in this house, which he had inherited.
- 8:23It was a family home, but he wasn't
- 8:24really able to care for himself.
- 8:25And David realized nobody's stepping up.
- 8:28Tom doesn't have family that can care for
- 8:30him.
- 8:30Tom doesn't have somebody that can be there
- 8:32for him.
- 8:33And David in his twenties, took it upon
- 8:35himself to care for Tom.
- 8:37He eventually became Tom's legal caregiver.
- 8:40He moved into that home with Tom to
- 8:42take care of him there.
- 8:43And that house became a little outpost of
- 8:46kingdom adventure in many different ways.
- 8:48It was on Berkeley Avenue in Elmhurst.
- 8:50And so eventually David and Tom nicknamed it
- 8:53the HMS Berkeley, like his majesty's service, as
- 8:55though it was a ship, a ship on
- 8:57the sea of adventure with Jesus.
- 8:59And other men got involved and there were
- 9:00kind of a rotating group of roommates who
- 9:02would help with Tom's care, but who would
- 9:04also be formed in the way of Jesus
- 9:06as they kind of pressed into the challenges
- 9:08of being there.
- 9:10Tom experienced growth in his own relationship with
- 9:13Jesus in the church in really dramatic ways.
- 9:15And also was a huge blessing to other
- 9:18people.
- 9:18Tom has since passed away.
- 9:20The last time I saw David was at
- 9:22Tom's funeral.
- 9:23And he got to recount some of these
- 9:24stories.
- 9:25And to me, it's just this incredible vision
- 9:28of being willing to stick with someone.
- 9:30Again, when there isn't necessarily a clear obligation
- 9:33to do so, David certainly could have, could
- 9:35have made an excuse.
- 9:36He could have said, look, Tom's not my
- 9:38family or, Hey, I'm young.
- 9:39I'm starting my career.
- 9:40I need to go pursue wherever my art
- 9:42is going to be.
- 9:42But he had that intuition.
- 9:43And, and for 20 plus years, that was
- 9:46a kingdom adventure story that bore much fruit.
- 9:50And as it happens, David has also had
- 9:52a fruitful career as an artist and continues
- 9:54to do so.
- 9:55So God gave him that too.
- 9:56But I'm so thankful that David was willing
- 9:58to press in and be present to Tom
- 10:00and stick with him again, just because of
- 10:02that, that Holy spirit nudge, that intuition, this
- 10:04is the person I need to stick with.
- 10:07So again, if you're at that juncture, who
- 10:09in your community might God be calling you
- 10:11to stick with?
- 10:12Is there somebody that doesn't have someone in
- 10:14their corner where you could be the one?
- 10:16You could be the champion that loves them,
- 10:17that helps them, that serves them.
- 10:19Could that be a beautiful kingdom story?
- 10:21And are you willing to trust God and
- 10:23taking that risk?
- 10:26Okay.
- 10:27A final example here.
- 10:28I did say I had one example that
- 10:30was more about marriage.
- 10:31So I want to tell the story of
- 10:33the McQuilkins.
- 10:35So McQuilkin, M-C-Q-U-I-L
- 10:40-K-I-N.
- 10:41Not only is it a fun name to
- 10:42pronounce, it's a really meaningful story.
- 10:44So Robert McQuilkin and his wife Muriel had
- 10:48been married for many decades.
- 10:50Robert found himself the president of Columbia Bible
- 10:54College.
- 10:55And he had a kind of plan for
- 10:57his tenure at Columbia Bible College.
- 10:58He intended to be there as a long
- 11:00-term president as best he could.
- 11:02And so he kind of already had it
- 11:03charted out, but then Muriel got Alzheimer's and
- 11:07her symptoms got worse and worse over time.
- 11:10And eventually he realized she needs full-time
- 11:13care.
- 11:14And this was eight years before he had
- 11:16planned to retire.
- 11:17So significant number of years still left in
- 11:21his kind of vocational plan.
- 11:22And he realized, I've got to stick with
- 11:25Muriel.
- 11:26I'm not going to put her somewhere where
- 11:27somebody else takes care of her and continue
- 11:29my career as a president.
- 11:30I'm going to care for her.
- 11:32I'm going to be the one.
- 11:33That's the next step for me.
- 11:35This is what he said.
- 11:37He said, when the time came, the decision
- 11:39was firm.
- 11:40It took no great calculation.
- 11:42It was a matter of integrity.
- 11:44Had I not promised 42 years before in
- 11:46sickness and in health, till death do us
- 11:49part.
- 11:52And he stepped down from that position as
- 11:54president.
- 11:55He cared for Muriel full-time for many
- 11:57years.
- 11:58She later passed away and he's also actually
- 11:59since passed away.
- 12:01But I look at that example and I'm
- 12:03so deeply inspired by it.
- 12:05I think partly because I resonate with his
- 12:09sense of ambition, right?
- 12:11I'm probably never going to be the president
- 12:12of a Bible college, but I resonate with
- 12:15that sense of I've got a plan and
- 12:16I've got years of work ahead of me
- 12:17and I want to get it done.
- 12:18The fact that he kind of already had
- 12:20that timeline and he knew he was eight
- 12:22years ahead of retirement, so to speak.
- 12:24And yet also his, his integrity and his
- 12:27character to say, God's calling me to love
- 12:30my wife.
- 12:30And that comes first.
- 12:32That comes first.
- 12:33Even if I have to sacrifice this career
- 12:35that I've envisioned, obviously the marriage covenant is
- 12:38a very specific kind of lifelong commitment.
- 12:41And yet this is another instance where you
- 12:44have to make a sacrifice if you're going
- 12:46to love.
- 12:48And again, I don't say that to be
- 12:49prescriptive or formulate.
- 12:51There, there may be cases where people need
- 12:52other professional caregivers to be involved in the
- 12:55mix.
- 12:55But for Robert, this was clear that this
- 12:57was the path of obedience and he was
- 12:59willing to take it.
- 13:01So again, I want to encourage you in
- 13:03your discernment soup to be asking the question,
- 13:06who is God calling me to love?
- 13:08And to be willing to do very counter
- 13:10-cultural things with your career, if and when
- 13:14there's an opportunity to love someone.
- 13:17Okay.
- 13:17Now, uh, speaking of family relationships, because family
- 13:20relationships are unique, there's this movement in our
- 13:23culture where people are quote unquote, going no
- 13:26contact.
- 13:26I don't know if you've seen this on
- 13:27social media seems to be popular among younger
- 13:29people, but people who, for whatever reason decide
- 13:32they no longer want to be associated with
- 13:34their parents at all.
- 13:35They don't want to be in touch with
- 13:36them at all.
- 13:37And while there may be situations where it's
- 13:41appropriate to go no contact, uh, perhaps the
- 13:43situations of really profound abuse, um, where you
- 13:46need that space in order to, to recover
- 13:48and to be safe.
- 13:49Um, I want to push back against this
- 13:52attitude that cutting someone off is often the
- 13:55right thing to do.
- 13:56I think we should be very hesitant as
- 13:59disciples of Jesus to cut someone off in
- 14:01that way.
- 14:02Um, part of that is that we do
- 14:04have teachings in scripture specifically about family relationships.
- 14:08So we have in the 10 commandments, obviously,
- 14:10uh, honor your father and mother, so that's
- 14:13really clear for honoring the parental relationship.
- 14:15We have a broader statement about family from
- 14:17first Timothy.
- 14:18So first Timothy five, eight, anyone who does
- 14:21not provide for their relatives and especially for
- 14:24their own household has denied the faith and
- 14:27is worse than an unbeliever, anyone who does
- 14:31not provide for their relatives and especially for
- 14:34their own household has denied the faith and
- 14:37is worse than an unbeliever.
- 14:39Wow.
- 14:40That is a really high standard of family
- 14:42relationship in the scriptures.
- 14:44So, so we are called in as much
- 14:47as we can to, to maintain those family
- 14:50relationships, to love those who are literally blood
- 14:53relatives of ours.
- 14:54Of course, that's not the only, uh, call
- 14:57in our lives.
- 14:58Like Ruth, like David and Tom, um, like
- 15:01all of us as disciples of Jesus, our
- 15:02call is to love our neighbor as ourself,
- 15:04regardless of whether we're related to them or
- 15:06not.
- 15:06But I just didn't want to put that
- 15:07note in here that like we're called to
- 15:09love more than our family, but not less
- 15:11as disciples of Jesus.
- 15:13And so when we're making career decisions, it
- 15:15is a okay to forego a career opportunity.
- 15:19If that's what it takes to love your
- 15:20family, it is a okay to make less
- 15:23money in the long run or have less
- 15:24influence in the long run.
- 15:25If that's what it takes to love your
- 15:27family.
- 15:28For every person that, that carefully discerns, uh,
- 15:32to take a very specific position of influence
- 15:34that God has called them to, even though
- 15:36it's really hard for their family.
- 15:37There are so many people who are selfishly
- 15:40pursuing positions of influence at the cost of
- 15:44a loss of family relationships.
- 15:46So again, every situation requires discernment, but I
- 15:48think our bias should be, how am I
- 15:51loving my family and this career decision?
- 15:54And then, okay, what else has God calling
- 15:56me to do?
- 15:57How else does his vocation intersect with my
- 16:00life and my situation right now?
- 16:03So as you're mixing the soup, what is
- 16:05God calling me to do?
- 16:06Yes.
- 16:07Even more important.
- 16:08Who is God calling me to become?
- 16:10Yes.
- 16:10Perhaps just as important as what is, where
- 16:13is God calling me to go?
- 16:14And, uh, is God calling me to stay?
- 16:17And now also incredibly important.
- 16:20Who is God calling me to love?
- 16:24Lord Jesus, thank you that you help us
- 16:26discern the right thing.
- 16:28You don't just leave us out in the
- 16:29cold, not knowing which way is up or
- 16:31down.
- 16:32Give us the questions we need to ask
- 16:35to discern what it means to be faithful
- 16:37to you and to the people you've given
- 16:39us to love.
- 16:41Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 16:42do our work with you.
- 16:48Thanks for listening.
