- 0:14the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare
- 0:17CEO Brian Thompson
- 0:18along with the wave of public scrutiny and
- 0:21online vitriol the event has unleashed.
- 0:24To quote mister Witty, he said, I'm sure
- 0:26everyone has been disturbed by the negative and
- 0:28in many cases, vitriolic media and commentary that
- 0:31has been produced over the last few days
- 0:34particularly in the social media environment.
- 0:37There were very few people in the history
- 0:39of the US health care industry who had
- 0:40a bigger positive effect on American health care
- 0:43than Brian.
- 0:44To continue quoting mister Witty, he said our
- 0:46role is a critical role and we make
- 0:48sure that care is safe, appropriate,
- 0:50and is delivered when people need it. We
- 0:52guard against the pressures that exist for unsafe
- 0:54care or for unnecessary care to be delivered
- 0:57in a way which makes the whole system
- 0:58too complex and ultimately unsustainable.
- 1:02Brian Thompson was fatally shot the morning of
- 1:04December 4th in a brazen and targeted attack
- 1:07according to the NYPD.
- 1:09As of the morning of December 9th, the
- 1:11police are still actively searching for the suspect.
- 1:14A motive is currently unknown, but the words
- 1:16deny, defend, and depose
- 1:18were written on shell casings found at the
- 1:21crime scene.
- 1:22The killing of the CEO of the nation's
- 1:24largest health insurer has sparked a firestorm of
- 1:27online hostility toward the health insurance industry moradly.
- 1:31Individuals took to social media to share their
- 1:33experiences with delayed and denied care.
- 1:361 federal lawmaker described the situation as unjustified
- 1:40but not surprising, while another said the anger
- 1:43should be directed towards congress.
- 1:45Mike Tuffin, the CEO of AHIP, wrote in
- 1:47the December 5th on post on LinkedIn that
- 1:49the association condemns any suggestion that threats against
- 1:52our colleagues or anyone else in our country
- 1:55are ever acceptable.
- 1:57Insurers have quickly tightened security around their executives,
- 2:00moving conferences to virtual formats and removing biographical
- 2:04information online.
- 2:06To quote mister Witty again, he said, I
- 2:07encourage you to tune out the critical noise
- 2:10that we're hearing right now. It does not
- 2:12reflect reality. It is simply a sign of
- 2:14an era in which we live. What we
- 2:16must do is focus on what we know
- 2:18to be true and what we know to
- 2:19be true is that the health system needs
- 2:21a company like UnitedHealth Group and it needs
- 2:23people like Brian within it.
- 2:28Well a health care entrepreneur
- 2:30and former federal health official is reportedly guiding
- 2:33a president-elect Donald Trump's new government efficiency panel.
- 2:36Mister Trump announced the department of government efficiency
- 2:38in November, tapping Elon Musk, owner of Tesla
- 2:41and X, formerly known as Twitter, and Vivek
- 2:44Ramaswamy,
- 2:45founder of Royvin Sciences, to spearhead its creation.
- 2:48Brad Smith, founder and CEO of the health
- 2:50care investment firm Russell Street Ventures,
- 2:53effectively has been leading the panel in recent
- 2:55weeks, though his official role has not been
- 2:57announced according to The New York Times.
- 2:59Mister Smith was named director of the Center
- 3:01For Medicare and Medicaid Innovation in 2020.
- 3:04Prior to that, he served as COO of
- 3:06Anthem's diversified business
- 3:08group. During the pandemic, he also helped coordinate
- 3:11project Airbridge and sat on the board for
- 3:13operation Warp Speed during mister Trump's first term.
- 3:16Mister Smith founded the in home palliative care
- 3:18company,
- 3:19Aspire Health. His latest venture CareBridge is slated
- 3:22to be acquired by Elavance in a deal
- 3:24reportedly worth $2,700,000,000
- 3:28Well AHIP, the trade association representing health insurers
- 3:31has laid off an unknown number of employees.
- 3:33The organization's former director of communications and public
- 3:36affairs posted on LinkedIn December 5th that he
- 3:38had been part of quote a layoff.
- 3:41The company or the organization
- 3:43told Politico that AHIP is constantly assessing organizational
- 3:47needs to ensure they are best positioned to
- 3:49advance the interest of their member companies and
- 3:51those that they serve.
- 3:53Well, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield has walked
- 3:56back a controversial policy, capping the amount of
- 3:58time it would reimburse providers for anesthesia services.
- 4:02In November, Anthem plans in Connecticut, New York,
- 4:05and Missouri said they would implement
- 4:07physician work time values set by CMS for
- 4:10anesthesia reimbursement.
- 4:12Anthem said it would not pay for anesthesia
- 4:14services billed beyond the minutes recommended by CMS.
- 4:17That policy was set to take effect in
- 4:19February.
- 4:20The American Society of Anesthesiologists
- 4:22criticized that policy alleging the insurer would quote
- 4:25arbitrarily
- 4:26predetermined the time allowed for anesthesia care.
- 4:29To continue quoting the association,
- 4:32it's a cynical money grab by Anthem designed
- 4:34to take advantage of the commitment anesthesiologists
- 4:36make thousands of times each day to provide
- 4:38their patients with expert, complete, and safe anesthesia
- 4:42care. Anthem faced additional scrutiny when posts about
- 4:45the policy went viral on Twitter on December
- 4:474th, prompting lawmakers
- 4:49to weigh in. New York governor, Kathy Hochul,
- 4:52called the policy outrageous.
- 4:53On December 5th, she said Anthem agreed to
- 4:56reverse the policy. To quote her, she said,
- 4:58I shared my outrage. I had a plan
- 4:59from Anthem to strip away coverage from New
- 5:01Yorkers who had to go and under anesthesia
- 5:04for surgery. We pushed Anthem to reverse course
- 5:06and today they will be announcing a full
- 5:08reversal
- 5:09of this misguided policy.
- 5:11A spokesperson for Anthem called the called the
- 5:15coverage of the decision widespread information and
- 5:19said that that's what led them to change
- 5:21course. To quote Anthem, they said to be
- 5:23clear, it never was and never will be
- 5:25the policy of Anthem to not pay for
- 5:26medically necessary anesthesia services.
- 5:29The proposed update to the policy was only
- 5:31designed to clarify the appropriateness of anesthesia consistent
- 5:34with well established
- 5:36clinical guidelines.
- 5:37Anthem is owned by Elevance Health which operates
- 5:40the Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliates in 14
- 5:42states.
- 5:44Well, AM Best has downgraded the outlook for
- 5:46Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan from stable
- 5:49to negative based on a sharp deterioration in
- 5:51underwriting and operating income.
- 5:54The credit rating agency specializing in insurance said
- 5:56the decline in underwriting performance was driven by
- 5:59higher utilization
- 6:00across Blue Cross's business.
- 6:02Pent up demand for surgeries after the pandemic
- 6:04and high demand for GLP 1 drugs and
- 6:07autoimmune therapies were the major causes of the
- 6:09losses for Blue Cross. Medicare Advantage risk adjustment
- 6:12changes and rising acuity in Medicaid also contributed.
- 6:16Blue Cross reported a $3,200,000,000
- 6:18increase in medical costs in 2023
- 6:20compared to the year prior. The company has
- 6:22made significant efforts to improve its performance, including
- 6:26rightsizing its workforce.
- 6:27The company laid off 64 employees in August
- 6:30as part of that effort to reduce administrative
- 6:32costs.
- 6:33Blue Cross is also ending coverage for GLP
- 6:35ones for weight loss in its largest commercial
- 6:37plan at the beginning of 2025,
- 6:39citing concerns about safety, effectiveness, and cost as
- 6:43the reason for the decision.
- 6:46Well, Humana's CFO, Susan Diamond, is stepping down
- 6:49after 18 years with the insurer.
- 6:51Celeste Millett, the CFO of Global Infrastructure Partners
- 6:55and Investment Fund, will be Humana's next CFO.
- 6:58Miss Millett will assume with the CFO role
- 7:01in January.
- 7:02Miss Diamond will remain with Humana through the
- 7:04end of 2025
- 7:05in an advisory role.
- 7:08And Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, a subsidiary
- 7:10of Centene, has terminated its Medicaid contract with
- 7:13Northwestern Medicine in Chicago effective December 31st.
- 7:17After that, patients with that health plan must
- 7:19select a new plan during open enrollment to
- 7:21continue receiving care at the 11 hospital system.
- 7:24Tens of thousands of Medicaid patients will be
- 7:27affected by that change.
