- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the You gun Men's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Mike Chrispino, Dan Hurley coach. I thought, I don't want
- 0:06Speaker 1: to overstate things here, but that home game against Baylor
- 0:10Speaker 1: that was huge. You don't want to put that on
- 0:13Speaker 1: the ninth game of the year or whatever, But do
- 0:15Speaker 1: you have a thought like that? Did you think that
- 0:18Speaker 1: coming in? This one's big for us? We got to
- 0:20Speaker 1: have this one.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what like meditation and journaling and I
- 0:25Speaker 2: think prayer and get the good night's rest. I mean,
- 0:29Speaker 2: it can help you control your mind, I think pretty well,
- 0:33Speaker 2: and be mentally tough, and it can make you very mindful.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And because you know, it's so hard to control your thoughts,
- 0:40Speaker 2: but you could do all those things plus another hundred things,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and there was no way of stopping yourself from thinking
- 0:48Speaker 2: about where we were and if we lost that Baylor game,
- 0:53Speaker 2: especially with Alex out, all right, you know, it creeps
- 0:56Speaker 2: into your mind the stretch of games we're about to
- 0:59Speaker 2: start now and Alex the only real like returning starter
- 1:04Speaker 2: from these these teams.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Okay, so now he's out and I'm going to go
- 1:08Speaker 3: Baylor at.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Texas and Gonzaga's looming. We could be under Fivelet are
- 1:13Speaker 2: going into the league play and now like you're not,
- 1:16Speaker 2: You're you're not going through each team, and but in
- 1:19Speaker 2: your mind you're saying to yourself like like we're we're
- 1:23Speaker 2: in deep you know, potential deep trouble here as great
- 1:25Speaker 2: as gamble is.
- 1:28Speaker 3: With UH, with so many young.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Players and new players and the pressure of that game.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I could have listen. That team's you know, as
- 1:37Speaker 1: a top fifteen club. They've got all that talent, those
- 1:40Speaker 1: great guards. As you viewed that game and prepped for it,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I know we talked before the games all the time.
- 1:48Speaker 1: What was the single thing that you had to have
- 1:51Speaker 1: you think that night as a group to get through
- 1:54Speaker 1: that without caravan.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, So, like I was saying, I think it's you know,
- 1:58Speaker 3: you're you're.
- 2:01Speaker 2: You know, your initial reaction when when you know when
- 2:04Speaker 2: the team doc and the medical people tell you that
- 2:07Speaker 2: you know that Alex is not playing, you know. The
- 2:12Speaker 2: the day before we basically had one practice where where
- 2:17Speaker 2: we were able to kind of work on some things
- 2:21Speaker 2: to play the two bigs together. UH. Baylor made that
- 2:27Speaker 2: possible because they played two bigs together. So it actually
- 2:32Speaker 2: worked to our favor, you know, because Alex occupies like
- 2:37Speaker 2: thirty five minutes a game at the four, so you know,
- 2:40Speaker 2: so there's not a lot of front court minutes besides
- 2:42Speaker 2: center minutes for us. But you know, Baylor, because of
- 2:45Speaker 2: the way they played, that wasn't actually a bad game.
- 2:48Speaker 2: If you're going to not have Alex, that was probably
- 2:50Speaker 2: the one to not have Alex four. But I don't
- 2:54Speaker 2: want to do it again. It wasn't fun. It was
- 2:56Speaker 2: money or fun. So you know, I think, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: once the players realized, oh man, we don't have the
- 3:05Speaker 2: captain for this one and we and we got to
- 3:08Speaker 2: win this one.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Like this is I think we saw.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You know, some people with a real look at determination
- 3:16Speaker 2: and the lead up and some some players that were
- 3:19Speaker 2: really excited to uh you know, to lead us to
- 3:22Speaker 2: a win.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I think, uh, you know, you could.
- 3:26Speaker 2: See Liam as a as a freshman, uh you know,
- 3:31Speaker 2: he had to do a very few freshmen are capable
- 3:34Speaker 2: of doing some of the shot solo. Aiden we had
- 3:36Speaker 2: some guys step up. Sam Tarris played well, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: Jay stew gave us some good minutes Jay Ross. So
- 3:45Speaker 2: I just think that whole nowI thing to that Baylor game, uh,
- 3:49Speaker 2: you know, has a chance to to in a way
- 3:52Speaker 2: really formed the team.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Plus you fell behind a Baylor at home, just
- 3:57Speaker 1: like we're gonna get to Texas here in a second.
- 3:59Speaker 1: You were able to jump on Texas and get ahead
- 4:01Speaker 1: and stay ahead. Baylor jumped on the Yukon pretty hard,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and the Huskies were able to scrap back within one
- 4:09Speaker 1: at halftime. I thought that was maybe the biggest part
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the game. You didn't fold, and you were able
- 4:14Speaker 1: to get back into your stuff and get back even
- 4:17Speaker 1: going to halftime.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I mean for what I mean, Listen, there's a lot
- 4:22Speaker 2: of just speculation about about the team or or why
- 4:27Speaker 2: now we went to why maw We went, why maw
- 4:29Speaker 2: We went the way Mawi went for us I was
- 4:32Speaker 2: a tongue twister, but there's a lot of speculation and
- 4:36Speaker 2: a lot.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Of external noise.
- 4:38Speaker 2: In the end, our defense has been bad, I mean
- 4:42Speaker 2: our defense and our rebounding. Whether we're not using the
- 4:46Speaker 2: right schemes as coaches that we need to continue to
- 4:50Speaker 2: adjust and learn from, or whether that just our players
- 4:56Speaker 2: have not You know, Mike, there's no magic dust. Billy
- 5:01Speaker 2: Donovan as one of the coaches I probably reached out
- 5:03Speaker 2: for when I first got back from from MAUI just
- 5:06Speaker 2: to get some advice. And Gino I've had some extended
- 5:10Speaker 2: conversations with and Uh, you know, just different people. And
- 5:14Speaker 2: I think he just one thing he got across to
- 5:15Speaker 2: me was like, hey, Dan, you you guys don't have
- 5:18Speaker 2: a magic dust there, you know, like the magic dust
- 5:22Speaker 2: for you guys has been people like Cam Spencer and
- 5:26Speaker 2: Donovan Klingen and Jordan Hawkins. You've had some incredible men
- 5:30Speaker 2: that have played both both ends of the court. They've
- 5:33Speaker 2: guarded at an elite level. They've shared the game with
- 5:36Speaker 2: each other, and they've played like warriors, and like focus
- 5:40Speaker 2: on just doing that with your team and getting your
- 5:42Speaker 2: team to get there and and turn off the external noise.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So I think for us, if we guard the way
- 5:50Speaker 2: we guarded UH to start the Baylor game, or the
- 5:52Speaker 2: way we guarded in Maui, We're not going to have
- 5:56Speaker 2: a successful season. We will not get we will not
- 5:58Speaker 2: contend for the Big East Championship. We will not you know, be.
- 6:01Speaker 3: A threat to do much in March. We'll be lucky
- 6:04Speaker 3: to get to March. Or the defense.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Changed UH at a point in that Baylor game, and
- 6:11Speaker 2: the rebounding changed UH at a point in that Baylor game.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And uh and we got tough and determined uh to win,
- 6:19Speaker 2: to win a basketball game. So when those things flipped, UH,
- 6:23Speaker 2: you know, our season starting to change.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Well with Dan Hurley the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 6:28Speaker 1: we're moving on to talk about Texas when we come back.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Stick with us here Onlearfield
