- 0:49Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:51Monday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:55Trent Condon, Ken Miller for the next couple of hours to talk
- 0:59sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 1:01afternoon here with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 1:04program. Bottom of the hour, Joe
- 1:05O'Donnell. He is the voice of the Minnesota
- 1:09Wild. We'll talk hockey with Joe
- 1:11O'Donnell at the bottom of the hour.
- 1:12Recap yesterday coming up here at 12:30 in the one O clock
- 1:17hour, Bill Seals covers Iowa State cyclonereport.com, part of
- 1:21the rival slash on three network.
- 1:23Bill Seals, the latest on Iowa State men and women as they both
- 1:27went down to defeat over the weekend.
- 1:29We'll get some football information in there as well
- 1:32from Bill Seals and then John Bowen Camp will double dip with
- 1:35John the women. Iowa had a nice win yesterday
- 1:38over Michigan. Meanwhile, the men fall on the
- 1:40road in Madison. Trent will have some plays of
- 1:42the day before we sign things off to off the bench coming up
- 1:46here at 2:00. So we've got you for the next
- 1:49couple of hours. We appreciate you being here
- 1:50with us. TC, good to see you.
- 1:52How are you? I'm doing great.
- 1:54How was vacation? I'm good.
- 1:57Good. This is good.
- 1:58Good. Yeah.
- 1:59Lost my glasses the very first night on the road and had to
- 2:03drive 5 hours without those. That were five days rather,
- 2:06which was kind of unpleasant. But plan was to go to
- 2:10Charleston. Never saw Charleston other than
- 2:12passing through maybe the Folly Beach.
- 2:15And Cindy and I both love beach towns.
- 2:17We just parked right there. Nice.
- 2:19Yeah, it was great. It was really good.
- 2:21So no trials and tribulations on the way outside of the glasses.
- 2:25I was kind of waiting for a disaster.
- 2:26Like, Oh yeah, we actually turned around on Tuesday.
- 2:29Yeah, No, no, there really wasn't.
- 2:32It was a country we'd never seen before.
- 2:33I'd never driven through Tennessee and never been to the
- 2:35Carolinas. Charleston was a disaster for
- 2:38for the traffic we got there in rush hour.
- 2:41And of course you're listening to Siri.
- 2:43And it means it's just, you know what rush hour traffic in a big
- 2:46city is like. It's the infrastructure.
- 2:48You exit. You exit a, you know, an
- 2:51Interstate and you're in the far right lane and there's bumper to
- 2:55bumper traffic and it's turn left in 50 feet.
- 2:59Well, how the hell am I supposed to do that?
- 3:00Yeah, Yeah. But we found the beach.
- 3:03We stayed there and had a ball and, and just, you know, kind of
- 3:07deprogrammed a little bit. Not that I didn't watch sports.
- 3:09I watch sports every night. OK.
- 3:11But so it was that a shutdown? No it.
- 3:13Wasn't a total shutdown, No. I could have taken yesterday
- 3:15morning off. That would have been fine.
- 3:17But we will get to the curling. Yeah, OK.
- 3:20A lot of celebration. Recapping.
- 3:21The the, the men's curling at some point during the program
- 3:25here today, But look at let's let's start with a puck from
- 3:27yesterday. It was a phenomenal game.
- 3:29It was an unbelievable hockey game.
- 3:31Hats off to, to Team USA for pulling that off.
- 3:35I think it's great for the game that they won.
- 3:36I do it. I've been saying it for years
- 3:38that US and Canada are essentially on the same plane
- 3:41when it comes to talent. And it's true.
- 3:43And it was proven out yesterday. I think Canada was a better team
- 3:45on the ice yesterday, but the court score doesn't indicate
- 3:49that. Into the winter go the spoils
- 3:50and they star spangled banners playing when the when the boys
- 3:54are standing on the podium. So well done.
- 3:56Phenomenal tournament really was Olympics was good.
- 3:59I enjoy the curly personally. Yeah, I love Curly.
- 4:02I watched a lot more than I anticipated and it just sucks.
- 4:05You win. It does, doesn't.
- 4:06Yeah, it's one of those weird sports that it's enthralling.
- 4:09It is a little too long sometimes.
- 4:12Maybe at 10:10 A's is a long time, so when so growing up cool
- 4:18guys played hockey. Of course, yes, yeah, yeah.
- 4:20The guys that couldn't skate curled.
- 4:22I think us hockey players, in hindsight, had it wrong.
- 4:26Yeah, you've seen women's curling.
- 4:28Right. Absolutely right.
- 4:29And everything that comes along with women's curling, I think we
- 4:34had it wrong. But I think I wish I would have
- 4:36curled because it would have been maybe a lot more social
- 4:39opportunities. Yes, absolutely.
- 4:41Where I'm going here, but that was great.
- 4:43The Olympics were fun. I love the Winter Olympics, but
- 4:46and just to culminate them and look at they had to play the
- 4:49game at that time of day, right? There's a time zone difference.
- 4:53They're not going to delay the closing ceremonies to midnight
- 4:56in Torito, right? For us, yes.
- 4:58Right. Did you watch any of the closing
- 4:59ceremonies? Not a second as soon as the
- 5:00game, soon as they scored the overtime, when I clicked the TV
- 5:03off I'd had. Enough I I'm sure.
- 5:04Yeah, that would go for a little walk with the mark.
- 5:06Yeah, that left the mark. Stinger Yeah, two things.
- 5:09The closing ceremonies, they're just weird.
- 5:11Are they? I flipped them on last night.
- 5:13We're watching. Oh, you're watching J Delay.
- 5:15Yeah, the tape delay. And it's just what is going on
- 5:18here? What has happened?
- 5:19I couldn't wrap my mind around it.
- 5:20It's too, it's too kind of big picture, kind of weird stuff
- 5:24that that for me and I, I didn't get it at all.
- 5:26So that was enough for me. So it's more than just the
- 5:28countries walking in, yeah. Yeah.
- 5:30And it's not that because it's there was, I don't know, music
- 5:33acts that were going on and a lot of things in Italian and
- 5:36then passing the torch and all these different things.
- 5:38Yeah, I guess not built for me by anyways the way that that was
- 5:42built, but what other thing on the hockey?
- 5:45I got one more 2. Hellebuck yeah.
- 5:48So this year gets. So damn frustrated with this.
- 5:50I mean, I watch this guy game, right?
- 5:52I watch every Jets game. This is Connor Hellebuck, every
- 5:54regular season game. And then the playoffs get here
- 5:57and you realize why I get so pissed off?
- 5:59Because he stinks. He was so good.
- 6:02I mean, let's talk about standing on your.
- 6:03Head, Oh my God. That was without him.
- 6:06They could be 52, probably 5-1. Yeah, probably you.
- 6:10You just put a standard goalie in that, right?
- 6:13That's probably what it was because that ice was tilted.
- 6:16It was the whole time, other than the first, say, 8 minutes
- 6:19of the game. The Americans came out on fire.
- 6:21On fire. But you're right, the ice was
- 6:25tilted for the rest of it. And Hellebuck was the major
- 6:27difference in the in the hockey game.
- 6:29Three on three. I like 3 on three, Yeah.
- 6:31And if you're going to let Canada start Makar and McKinnon
- 6:35and oh, McDavid, yeah, I take our chances.
- 6:38Feel like you're in pretty good shape you.
- 6:39Feel like you're in pretty good shape, but but look at those
- 6:42three. Gave up the goal.
- 6:43Not for this season, because The Jets aren't going to make no.
- 6:46They're not going to make playoffs.
- 6:47However, going forward, does it give you a little bit of hope as
- 6:51a fan that what we saw in this pressure pack of environment is
- 6:55you're going to find that this is going to be potentially Hella
- 6:59Buck say next season they get in the playoffs and finally he can
- 7:03translate the best regular season goalie and become the
- 7:05best playoff. Goalie, and he is.
- 7:07He's won three Vesnas. I mean, a baseball analogy.
- 7:10Cy Young winners don't win the MVP.
- 7:12Vesna winners don't win the MVP. Hella Buck did last year.
- 7:15They had to give him. He's that good during the
- 7:18regular season. My God, he was good yesterday.
- 7:19He was so good yesterday. And I got a little note that you
- 7:22were going to sing that Canadian National anthem if it were you
- 7:25guys to. Start because I got so many of
- 7:28those texts as well. I could I could I actually, I, I
- 7:32sang it to myself just to make sure.
- 7:34I still it's been a long time anyways.
- 7:36And you got, well, you between the two, you are definitely on
- 7:39the top tier of our singing voices.
- 7:41Yeah, I Can't Sing. At all, Yeah.
- 7:43If I and I get to hear every commercial break, yeah,
- 7:45sometimes with a little Jingle. You never know what's going to
- 7:47come out of kids about 3 commercials.
- 7:49Absolutely. So let let's kind of recap what
- 7:51we what I've, I guess I don't want to go all the way back to
- 7:55the Super Bowl, which wasn't much of A game.
- 7:57No. Pretty boring.
- 7:58Pretty boring game. Which commercial won the day?
- 8:01Because I did not see it had to be the Budweiser.
- 8:03The Budweiser, that's exactly where my mind went.
- 8:05So yes, that had to be the one. It was, it was so far and away
- 8:09for me anyways. I thought that was the best
- 8:11commercial when, when the eagle flies off the Clydesdales back.
- 8:15I mean, come on. Yeah.
- 8:17And that did make me cry, Did it?
- 8:18It got you? Yeah, a little bit.
- 8:20I told you I cry at commercials. And that was an example.
- 8:22Of another one of. Them.
- 8:23But the basketball, I mean, you could see Iowa State going into
- 8:28BYUBYUI had to, you know, had to put it together.
- 8:36Iowa yesterday against Wisconsin.
- 8:39I was gonna make the tournament. Yes.
- 8:41They got four games left and they got kind of 2.
- 8:43Penn State, Ohio State. And then Michigan.
- 8:47No. Ohio State, Penn State,
- 8:48Michigan, Nebraska. Yes.
- 8:50Correct. Those final 2, Michigan's just
- 8:53daunting. You mean you talked about
- 8:54matchup problems? That game against Duke on
- 8:55Saturday, that was high level basketball.
- 8:57Oh my God. The guys weren't making shots
- 8:59because the defense was so good. Yeah, we tried to envision the
- 9:01Iowa offense against that Michigan defense.
- 9:04Yeah, good luck, I know. Getting anything going against
- 9:07them and then what they probably have waiting for him in Lincoln.
- 9:11Yeah. After that last week, yes.
- 9:13That was a hell of a game. That was fun.
- 9:15It was a hell of a game, yes, and very entertaining.
- 9:17We got a lot of mileage, as you can imagine, out of that.
- 9:19A lot of different angles and both during the game and then
- 9:22after the game. So we got a lot out of that one
- 9:25boy. Sanford's having a year, isn't
- 9:26he? Yes, unless he's got Ben Sturtz
- 9:28on him. Well, true.
- 9:30But yeah, that's true. But you know, he's not playing
- 9:33Iowa and being guarded by starts.
- 9:35He is putting together one hell of a campaign.
- 9:37This week is incredibly important for Iowa because.
- 9:39Especially Ohio State Game I. Think and talk about bad
- 9:42matchups. What's Iowa struggled with?
- 9:43And we saw it again yesterday with Nick Boyd, guards that can
- 9:47get to the rim and what can that dude do?
- 9:49He can get to the rim. And now Bruce Thornton comes to
- 9:51town as good of a one-on-one player as we maybe have in the
- 9:55Big 10. That's saying something.
- 9:57Yes, and there's a lot of them. That's how good Bruce Thornton
- 10:00is. He doesn't have a lot of pieces
- 10:01around him, but you have that concern.
- 10:04We had a guy that had, what, 22 points going in from USC that
- 10:07goes off and scores 32 and just go into the rim time and time
- 10:10out and it's continued throughout the course of the
- 10:12season. That is a tough matchup.
- 10:16You win these two games this week, though, You're fine.
- 10:17Yeah, I think you. Are you're not going to Dayton?
- 10:19No. You're solidly in the
- 10:20tournament. Although is that a bad thing if
- 10:22you go to Dayton? I mean, I know it's obviously, I
- 10:24think I'd rather be in 11. I really do.
- 10:27And I know you have to play your way to get to that.
- 10:29Yeah. Got.
- 10:30An extra game? Sure.
- 10:31More travel? But I mean, you win the 8-9 and
- 10:34who's waiting for? You right, exactly because
- 10:36there's there's at. Least three heavy, I don't
- 10:38think. Iowa State, obviously, you know
- 10:40the loss to BYU, I was going to knock them down a peg.
- 10:43I was not beating Duke or Arizona, No, no.
- 10:46Yukon, No. Michigan.
- 10:47No, I mean, obviously they wouldn't see that, but.
- 10:51No, they potentially can now. Oh.
- 10:53That's true with the new rules. We saw that Des Moines a couple
- 10:55years back with Minnesota and Michigan State.
- 10:57Yeah, relatively new. If you only play a team once
- 11:00during the regular season, you can see them in the round of 32.
- 11:03So even Michigan's not completely crossed off, but
- 11:05unlikely. Still, regardless of that group,
- 11:08I was not beating any of those. Teams Duke.
- 11:10No. Boy, boozer something, isn't he?
- 11:13Who's the best player in the country?
- 11:15Boozer is the runaway favorite for Player of the Year, but boy,
- 11:19watching Saturday night, it's hard to say no to De Bansta,
- 11:22isn't it? De Bansta.
- 11:24What a game he had. His ability to do so many
- 11:28different things too. It's not just he's a scorer,
- 11:29though. He is the leading scorer in the
- 11:31country in the Big 12. Now, we're not talking about a
- 11:34kid from the Horizon League. He's doing it in the Big 12 as a
- 11:37freshman, and I know everybody. Darren Peterson, NBA honks
- 11:42Darren Peterson. Darren Peterson, How?
- 11:44Can he trust him? You can't.
- 11:45You absolutely can't. He doesn't like the game trend.
- 11:48I'm convinced of it. I really.
- 11:50AM get a lot of Ben Simmons vibes.
- 11:52Yeah, kind of. That's a good one.
- 11:53That's a good one. And that's not that's not good
- 11:56to have those. Vibes.
- 11:56No, not at all. Because this guy does not like
- 11:58the game one little bit. It wasn't a talent thing ever
- 12:00for Ben Simmons. It was a want, and the want
- 12:03doesn't feel like it's there for Peterson, even though he played
- 12:06over 30 minutes against Cincinnati.
- 12:07They got blown up by Cincinnati. By 16, he.
- 12:09Was playing better and Cincinnati pulled away well,
- 12:12they. Got a couple of good wins.
- 12:13The Bearcats. They do They're, you know, I
- 12:16saw, I think it was Lenardy. He still has Oklahoma State in
- 12:19the next 4 out. And no.
- 12:21Cincinnati and looking at the resumes and the comparisons and
- 12:25I, I couldn't wrap my mind around that.
- 12:26It's just not what they've done lately.
- 12:28Overall resumes that wasn't exactly close, but to Saturday
- 12:32night, you get the late tip off. You rewatched it?
- 12:35Yeah, no, I watched till 10, No 8 minutes left in the game.
- 12:39OK, yeah. And then got up and watched it
- 12:41before they dropped the puck. And just seeing that environment
- 12:45that the way that they support that building used to hold
- 12:4722,000 they've gone through. And is there really only one bar
- 12:50in Provo? Is that true?
- 12:52I don't know. Because I saw on Twitter Cyclone
- 12:54fans found that. Not surprised, right?
- 12:56Exactly. And there's only one bar.
- 13:00Does the does it only serve me your beer too?
- 13:02I wonder. You wonder, right?
- 13:04Right. That was like that.
- 13:05Weird thing thing here on Sundays that.
- 13:07Was Minnesota was the one that. That where it was.
- 13:09That's where I remember it too. I think because wouldn't I'd be
- 13:12going back home and I got to take as much American beer as I
- 13:15can. Yes, and I think we'll leave it
- 13:17on Sunday. You could only Was it?
- 13:20Was it called 3 two or something?
- 13:21Yes. Yeah, that sounds right.
- 13:22Yep, absolutely. Yeah, I remember those days, but
- 13:26that was just a Minnesota thing. I.
- 13:27Think so you want to stock up on Saturday because Sunday you
- 13:31wouldn't be able to get the full freight, right?
- 13:33It's like, are they, are they actually brewing it differently?
- 13:36I'd be wonder, right? I always wondered that too.
- 13:38That was it was almost one of those things was isn't really
- 13:41true anymore because I was a little bit later getting to
- 13:43Minnesota than you were and drinking beer.
- 13:46And I just always wondered if that was something that was
- 13:48real, but it was for Iowa State. Okay, I guess you have the road
- 13:53woes. The question I guess continues
- 13:55there. But on the heels of getting that
- 13:57final number one seed, the good vibes that were happening all
- 14:00day long, the losses that were happening for some teams across
- 14:02the country and you started dreaming a little bit.
- 14:05Boy, you kind of look at this path here and, and solidifying
- 14:08yourself as that number one seed.
- 14:10They're fine. I, I didn't see anything.
- 14:12Oh boy, here we go again. Or anything.
- 14:13Did you have our bracket guy on what's his name?
- 14:15Dave Oldman. Dave Oldman, yeah.
- 14:17Did you have him earlier in the week?
- 14:18Did he? I did he at that time.
- 14:20Now, that was before the UConn loss to Creighton.
- 14:23Of that was another head scratcher.
- 14:25I thought it was interesting too, that UConn was ahead of
- 14:28Houston when you looked at it because I thought it would come
- 14:30down to Iowa State or Houston, so that.
- 14:31Houston Iowa State game earlier last week obviously carried some
- 14:36weight. Yes, it is interesting and
- 14:38listening to the other side and hearing Houston fans
- 14:41specifically because that loss to create, that's a quad three
- 14:44loss for Yukon. I mean, that's pretty
- 14:45debilitating to your resume even with the name brand of
- 14:49Creighton. And obviously the Midwest
- 14:50matters a little bit more I'm sure than it does nationally.
- 14:53Still, you look at the 2 Iowa State losses that they have in
- 14:55comparison to what Houston has. I know it's a head to head, but
- 14:59it was at Hilton. If that game was in Houston, it
- 15:03probably maybe went the other way.
- 15:04Speaking of Houston, so we've got Kansas and Houston tonight
- 15:08on Big Monday. What gives?
- 15:10Houston? Do they lose three in a row?
- 15:12No. Does Kansas lose on a Monday at
- 15:14Fog Allen? Yes.
- 15:16I mean, I think they do, but you get my point.
- 15:18Absolutely. Yes.
- 15:19That's almost like a free square.
- 15:21Kansas at home on Monday. I don't care who they're
- 15:23playing. I'm taking The Jayhawks.
- 15:24Bill Self seems more known. He's had the health problems
- 15:27now, Peter. 'S just got to be killing him.
- 15:29Oh absolutely. How do you coach this guy?
- 15:32He is at times feels like he's at a loss for words.
- 15:35I mean, he explains it. He's been certainly more
- 15:38outright and truthful. Lately.
- 15:40About his viewings these last couple of weeks.
- 15:43It's taken a long time. It's.
- 15:44Frustrating him to know him. He is incredibly frustrated
- 15:47about all of this and he can understand it.
- 15:49I mean to not know. Oh, before a game, right?
- 15:53A big Monday. Was that two weeks ago?
- 15:54Yeah. You just.
- 15:56Nope. Sick.
- 15:56No, I'm out. I'm out.
- 15:58That was the Arizona game. I think so I.
- 16:00Think it was, yeah. And then and then he makes the
- 16:02three. I don't know what game it was
- 16:03that. Was the Texas Tech game that he
- 16:05hit the three hit? The three in terms Take Me Out.
- 16:07I'm ready. I.
- 16:08Mean come on, no T for me. Right.
- 16:10Come on. This guy is so talented.
- 16:13Yeah, but for you, I I wouldn't want him on my team.
- 16:16I really wouldn't. Because you can't trust him.
- 16:18And then what's he going to do? You know, I put the Big 12
- 16:21tournament aside. I mean, that's not the goal.
- 16:24The goal is to, you know, advance and March in the in the
- 16:27big dance, right? But how can you how can you be
- 16:29sure he's going to be there And when it comes right down to it
- 16:32and you need him to make a shot because I mean, this is this
- 16:35guy's that good. He can make a shot and you can
- 16:37count on him most times to do so when he's on the floor.
- 16:40But is he going to be on the floor?
- 16:42You just don't know. I think it's got to be
- 16:45frustrating to build self to no end, but it's going to be a hell
- 16:47of a game tonight. I can't wait.
- 16:49So then we get Iowa State, Utah tomorrow and I got to believe
- 16:53the clones stayed out there, right?
- 16:55They did. They did.
- 16:57And then Iowa Wednesday. All right, let's go to the
- 17:00women's game. Ava Haydn was unbelievable
- 17:02yesterday. So she came out right away and
- 17:07little too excitable. She she was a little bit off
- 17:11early in the game, maybe trying to do too much.
- 17:13I think you saw that what we've I did.
- 17:15Because I wasn't back to the TV. Oh, yeah.
- 17:17So I was still in the morning. I could imagine that.
- 17:20And then she got ticked off a couple of times, Did she?
- 17:22And I think we're learning. I mean, this has happened now a
- 17:24couple of times that it jumped out.
- 17:26Oh, I think I've seen this before with Ava Haydn.
- 17:29You piss her off, don't do that good, because after that she was
- 17:33incredible and she's talking junk and telling the girl that
- 17:36she got into it a couple of times.
- 17:38You can't garbage. I mean, I think we're learning
- 17:41Ava Haydn. She's wired.
- 17:43She's the kind of player that you like.
- 17:44You like those people that talk junk.
- 17:46You like those people that aren't going to backed out and
- 17:49that was Dave definitely Ava Haydn, the high, low action that
- 17:52been waiting for really the last couple years.
- 17:54All right, if you're going to play Stalky out there with
- 17:56another big, you want to see that high, low action and Stalky
- 17:59passing the ball was about as good as she is.
- 18:01Was she that pressure defense against Michigan now, they still
- 18:04struggled, 18 turnovers in the game.
- 18:05Yeah, that's what Michigan does, though, much like Ohio State, a
- 18:09lot of pressure. They're going to turn you over
- 18:11and they turn it over too much. Still, you had Stalky.
- 18:14She's really good. I was shocked that it was senior
- 18:17day yesterday. That would totally cut snuck up
- 18:19on me. It came quiet.
- 18:20Now they play Thursday at home against Illinois.
- 18:22I think they just. Wanted to do.
- 18:24It on the weekend, yeah, big opponent.
- 18:26They've won I think 3 consecutive games now against
- 18:28top ten teams on senior day. That had something to do with
- 18:31the two and this Michigan team they didn't look at yesterday.
- 18:34They look terrible. I was 6 in the country.
- 18:37They were the only team in the Big 10 that has pushed UCLA.
- 18:39They had UCLA close to beat, lost by three three weeks ago
- 18:45against them. They almost beat UConn.
- 18:47They lost by three to UConn. Jesus.
- 18:49This is a Michigan team. I know.
- 18:50If this was the first time you saw the Wolverines yesterday,
- 18:53how's this team? The 6th best team in the
- 18:54country. That also says about this
- 18:57defensive. They they almost beat UConn.
- 19:00UConn and UCLA. Where was the game is stores?
- 19:04I don't remember where that one was.
- 19:06I know the one against against UCLA was in Ann Arbor, but those
- 19:11are a couple of eye opening ones.
- 19:12And Iowa completely took them out and it was the defensive end
- 19:15again. And that's a couple of times we
- 19:17brought up this Iowa team and and the upside that they have,
- 19:19it comes on the defensive end of the floor.
- 19:21Why? Some of the past teams you go
- 19:23back to early and Caitlin, even Mega Gustafson's teams, squads
- 19:26like that and they just weren't good enough defensively.
- 19:29This team is good enough defensively where they could
- 19:32beat a really good team in the Sweet 16.
- 19:35They're not going to beat UConn, they're not going to beat South
- 19:37Carolina, Texas, any of those teams.
- 19:39But with the right match up, I think they can get to an Elite
- 19:428. I think it is there for that
- 19:44squad because of what they do on the defensive end.
- 19:46Now. Hayden's still got to be great.
- 19:48She has to stay out of foul trouble, all those different
- 19:50things. But.
- 19:50Somebody's got a poker A. Little bit, maybe do that a
- 19:53little bit. Maybe you need to find an
- 19:55agitator on your own bench. Can you find one of those?
- 19:58And that pisses her off and gets her.
- 19:59Position is it gonna help you 'cause?
- 20:01She was so, so good. Yeah.
- 20:03And also the Iowa State women I know they got got away against.
- 20:07The fourth quarter, 31 to 15 outs scored.
- 20:09And. They take a nine point lead into
- 20:11the final quarter. Come on.
- 20:12The gap between TCU and everybody else, I think in the
- 20:15Big 12 is pretty significant. That would have been a huge role
- 20:18in the Adam. The thing that's so weird is the
- 20:20Big 12 is down in women's basketball.
- 20:22It's certainly what we're used to because you look at the
- 20:24bracket projections and there's not nearly as many.
- 20:26There is on the one side with bracket matrix.
- 20:29But the Charlie Creans of the world, Iowa State's still
- 20:31sitting in the 8-9 line. You kind of look at, you say,
- 20:33all right, they had a big losing streak, but when they have had
- 20:36obviously their full complement players, this is a top minimum,
- 20:39top 15 team. So Abby Brown's been back for
- 20:41what, two games now? Yeah, the.
- 20:44Problem though, 4 Iowa State is the rest of the league because
- 20:48the Big 12 is so down there just metrically isn't opportunities
- 20:52for them to take a big step forward.
- 20:54Bart Torvik, which is Ken Pomeroy, they're 31st in the
- 20:57country at 21 and seven and that is the knock against them.
- 21:01Resume wise, it's a game. Same kind of vote for them when
- 21:04you go through and look at their resume.
- 21:06I'm bringing up Iowa State right now.
- 21:07Let's go to net in women's basketball.
- 21:11Iowa State is 31st there also on top of it.
- 21:14You dig a little bit deeper into it and you look through the
- 21:17resume that the Cyclone women have.
- 21:19They are just two and four in quad one games, the win against
- 21:24Iowa, The other victory they have is that road win against
- 21:26Texas Tech. But just two quad 1 victories.
- 21:29That's not going to get you very high at the NCAA tournament
- 21:32because the Big 12 is down this year.
- 21:35One of those side Hawk games seemed like a long time ago.
- 21:38They do. My gosh, kind of was.
- 21:40All right. Good stuff underway on a Monday.
- 21:43Joe Donald's going to join us. Talk a little puck with Joe.
- 21:45Do you remember who we interviewed the first day he was
- 21:49a pro? Matt Boldy.
- 21:51Matt Boldy, I do about that. That's always the name that I'm
- 21:53like, hey, I know that name. We the very first day he signed
- 21:57his pro contract Trent and I had him what a goal that to open up
- 21:59the a gold medal game yesterday they split taves in my car right
- 22:03down the middle and dipsy doos and in on Bennington and back of
- 22:07the net one nothing USA and away we go is underway.
- 22:10Yeah Matt Bolton good stuff. Of course Joe calls all of his
- 22:13games Quinn Hughes as well. We'll talk puck with Joe
- 22:15O'Donnell and what if anything what does this mean?
- 22:18What did that win do yesterday for US hockey, which was Arrows
- 22:21already pointing up? In terms of the national team
- 22:25board hockey in general, hockey in.
- 22:27General. It helps.
- 22:29Now you have to take this momentum and you need to take
- 22:32this momentum and you can't have a finals that has Florida,
- 22:36Edmonton. Yeah, please.
- 22:37No, no. More We You need big brands, you
- 22:41need somebody to take a step forward.
- 22:45But do you? Think people will go out of
- 22:46their way to find Jack Hughes who scored the golden goal, or
- 22:51just Connor? I mean, it's, it's too bad.
- 22:53Well, it's not. I'm glad he's a Jet on one hand.
- 22:56On the other hand, it's too bad Hellebuck doesn't play in an
- 22:58American market, right? Because I think maybe you would,
- 23:02you would search his team out more.
- 23:04And I mean, say, play for Nashville or whatever.
- 23:06Jack Hughes, I don't know. Does he play for Vegas?
- 23:09No on New Jersey, NJ. See, I don't even know I'm a
- 23:12sport sports fan. I'll get into it in April.
- 23:15In fact, outside of Hella Buck, I would struggle probably naming
- 23:2090% of the roster who they play with as a sports guy, that's a
- 23:25problem. Sure.
- 23:26So now it's up to the NHL. You need to market this
- 23:28correctly and you need the ESPN's help, but you need to
- 23:32take this momentum and push forward because it was there and
- 23:35we'll see the TV ratings, which I'm sure you.
- 23:37Know I'm I'm anxious to see them because sports bars were.
- 23:41Packed. I loved the fact that, you know,
- 23:44bars were opening up at six AM, 5:00 AM in anticipation of, you
- 23:48know, people showing up to watch the game, you know, with, with
- 23:52fellow fans. I don't think it'll come close
- 23:56to what was it, 2010 when it was in Vancouver middle of the
- 24:00afternoon, which also went overtime.
- 24:02That was Crosby's golden goal. But I think it's going to do a
- 24:05really good number. I think it's going to do a
- 24:07really good number. You're looking for some original
- 24:096 so they got the Red Wings that are in.
- 24:12Yeah, Dylan Larkin, the place for the American the.
- 24:15Bruins. I mean, you kind of need those
- 24:17name brands too. You need them to make a run, at
- 24:19least get into the second round, you know, those kind of things.
- 24:21That would mean upsets for both of them, at least in terms of
- 24:24seating right now. Rangers, Blackhawks are out.
- 24:27Yeah, you can't get those ones, but probably the Avalanche
- 24:30rooting for them. That is at least a known.
- 24:33That's I think what also hockey needs.
- 24:34You can't have the Vegas's and the Seattle's and the Edmonton's
- 24:38of the world. You need to have Dame brands
- 24:40that are going to help push it. And when you get that and you
- 24:43start to get the casuals, we're trickling in and how many people
- 24:46are watching hockey for the first time maybe in years to get
- 24:49them back in. But it's not going to be easy
- 24:51because you look through and you kind of look at the standings.
- 24:53Oh look, Carolina's good again. Yeah, So when when hockey
- 24:57resumes on Wednesday night, I don't think it's going to do.
- 25:00I don't think people are going to go out of their way to watch
- 25:02it. I think the playoffs maybe, and
- 25:05Mike Palm texted me yesterday, You know what he text said
- 25:07yesterday? I know how I don't know how I'm
- 25:10going to watch hockey on Wednesday and Thursday night.
- 25:12It's going to be such a let down.
- 25:13Yeah, yeah, absolutely. There's such high level, Such
- 25:17high level. Take a break.
- 25:17We'll come back. We'll be joined by more by Joe
- 25:20O'Donnell Moore, Hockey conversation hour number two,
- 25:22Bill Seals covers Iowa State. John Bowenkamp was a Carver for
- 25:26the women. We'll do women and men with John
- 25:29Trent's plays of the day. How are your plays been doing,
- 25:31by the way? You on a roll?
- 25:32Yeah. Good day yesterday.
- 25:33Good day yesterday. Yeah, we faded Iowa three
- 25:35different times, so we went two and one on that.
- 25:37That worked out well on the wrestling mat.
- 25:39By the way, what's going on wrestling wise?
- 25:41It looked awful. Yes.
- 25:42Is Beth Katz got a really difficult decision to make?
- 25:44Is that coming? I think very simply comes down
- 25:47to the money people, the money people that invest in wrestling
- 25:49over there. There is one high level donor
- 25:51that spends a lot and their return on investment has not
- 25:54been very good, but a couple with.
- 25:56Are they starting to get vocal? I haven't seen anything yet.
- 25:59Okay, but I think that's the simplest answer.
- 26:01I haven't heard anything. I haven't seen anything.
- 26:03It is a non revenue sport. Sure even this Carver brings
- 26:06people in. We know just like women's
- 26:08basketball, even though sell out crowds, women's basketball under
- 26:11Caitlin Clark still lost money. Same thing with wrestling, as
- 26:14good as it is supported, it is still a losing proposition
- 26:17overall. If that big money donor though
- 26:19says time for a change then he make a change.
- 26:22The biggest thing yesterday, he's a wrestling Oklahoma State.
- 26:25They had taken a step back under John Smith and what weren't the
- 26:27same program that they were, What do they do?
- 26:30They went out and hired a young guy and Steven David Taylor
- 26:34after his success as a wrestler at Penn State, he has come in
- 26:37there completely reinvigorated that program top to bottom.
- 26:41They're young, they're fun, they're doing things
- 26:43differently. And the guy the state wrestling
- 26:45tournament this week, Drayshon. Which is where I'm going next
- 26:47cuz I would be remiss if we didn't talk a little bit about
- 26:50that. I know how much you love it,
- 26:51especially it's on Saturday night.
- 26:53How was? Was it?
- 26:54It was incredible. How were the crowds?
- 26:56Great. We had two, four timers.
- 26:58And normally Saturday night, by the time we get towards the end,
- 27:00a lot of people trickled out. Yeah, people make their way to
- 27:03the exits, get to the bar, get back to the hotel.
- 27:05It's a long week. And so you see what did.
- 27:08The Blizzard come through Thursday night into Friday.
- 27:10When was it? Wednesday into Thursday, I think
- 27:13it was it. Was awful.
- 27:14What did that do to the tournament?
- 27:15It hurt, yeah. There were a lot of people that
- 27:17were staying away, I think because of that.
- 27:18And certainly attendance both Wednesday and Thursday suffered.
- 27:21Because all 99 counties make their way to poke, right?
- 27:23That's right. Well, 98.
- 27:25That's the way that it happens every single year.
- 27:28But Drayshon Ross, he's going to Oklahoma State and to see the
- 27:31kind of story that he put on. But we got 24 timers, including
- 27:34one for Mos Age. Yes, absolutely.
- 27:37Green Devil, another four timer, the second in Osage history,
- 27:40joining Mark Schwab, Doug Schwab's oldest brother.
- 27:43He is a four timer. So we got Fox, we got Ross that
- 27:46are 4 timers. And it's so cool because, you
- 27:49know, I'm kind of old school as it pertains to being on the
- 27:53radio, play by play, no cheering in the press box, those kind of
- 27:58things, right? Yet at state wrestling when you
- 28:00get a four timer and it happens all across.
- 28:02Or Nebraska football. But go ahead.
- 28:04They're different over there is everybody comes to their feet
- 28:08and gives a round of applause, as they did first for Fox.
- 28:11But even the guys in the radio row, and we got 3 rows of us
- 28:13there and there are 30-40 different radio stations all set
- 28:17up and everybody stands up. That's awesome.
- 28:20Stands up. It's not cheap to do.
- 28:22No, no, absolutely not Those people that are able to do it.
- 28:26One thing talking to a lot of different radio people is it's
- 28:29different than the old days where you just covered your
- 28:30school kind of covering all the surrounding schools and and
- 28:33doing that. But to see everybody stand up
- 28:36and celebrate those four time state champions, awesome every
- 28:38single time, those goosebumps moments, the grand March, all
- 28:41the place winners coming through.
- 28:43That's always cool every single year.
- 28:44So another great mid state tournament run away for Don
- 28:47Bosco and 1A run away for Southeast folk and we got a tie
- 28:50in Class 2A, a tie for the team title there.
- 28:53I came down to the end. So really fun tournament as it
- 28:56always is. Great work out of those guys and
- 28:58just commend every single one of those guys getting there on the
- 29:01mat. It is not an easy sport.
- 29:02I. Bet not.
- 29:03No, I never did it, but growing up, don't know anything about
- 29:06it, but certainly moves the needle here.
- 29:08No doubt about it. All right, 1230.
- 29:10Joe Donald is next. Miller and Condon, glad you're
- 29:12with us as we talk sports with you.
- 29:15We'll do so until 2:00 on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 29:34I'm Millery Congon, welcome back.
- 29:36Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever listening in the state
- 29:39of Iowa. We are grateful that you are.
- 29:41Trent and I take you until 2:00 off the bench, 2 to 5.
- 29:44Let's continue the puck conversation.
- 29:46Our friend Joe O'Donnell, the voice of the Minnesota Wild, he
- 29:50joins us to recap which was a phenomenal tournament, both
- 29:53women and the men, overtime games both knocking off their
- 29:56archrival Team Canada to win the gold medal.
- 29:59And Joe joins us. Joe Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 30:01coming on. Joe O'Donnell, what a game.
- 30:03Always a pleasure guys. Kenny, how are you today?
- 30:08It left the mark. I'm not going to lie.
- 30:10It did leave a mark, Joe. It was a hell of a game though.
- 30:12And you know what? And I think it will.
- 30:14I think that the trickle down effect will bring more eyeballs
- 30:18to the sport that you make your living out.
- 30:20And I absolutely love with a passion and I know you do as
- 30:23well. But I think it's good for the
- 30:25game, Joe. I really do, as much as that
- 30:26pains me to say, because I would much rather hurdle Canada than
- 30:29smart Star Spangled Banner, no offense.
- 30:32Yeah, I'm with you. I knew that would be a little
- 30:36painful for you and a lot of your fellow Canadians, but great
- 30:41for the game. I was really hoping that it
- 30:44would be close and a tight game in the third period because, you
- 30:49know, with the start time, think about people on the West Coast
- 30:52that, you know, there are a lot of hockey fans all across the US
- 30:55as this game has grown specifically in the last 30 or
- 30:59so years. But, you know, some of those
- 31:01people weren't getting up probably at 5:00 AM to watch
- 31:04puck drop, but by the third period, they're probably having
- 31:06their coffee, getting their act together.
- 31:08And hopefully they, too did. So.
- 31:09I haven't seen the ratings yet. I'm sure they were outstanding.
- 31:12I can just tell you that being around Minnesota, our kids had a
- 31:16ton of youth hockey over the weekend.
- 31:18I was at a rink in Eden Prairie. We were watching overtime on my
- 31:22phone with a couple of the dads as our kids skating around out
- 31:26there. And then, you know, a bunch of
- 31:28youth kids start running through Channing US after Jack Hughes
- 31:32scored some borderline lunatic dad had a flag.
- 31:36He was running around the arena and and I saw videos online last
- 31:41night of, you know, similar situations that youth hockey
- 31:43rinks all across the country. So great for the game, great for
- 31:46these kids. I thought Mike Tirico spend off
- 31:48on NBC was was poignant, was spot on just as far as, you
- 31:53know, following your dreams. And for a lot of these kids
- 31:56watching what what we witnessed as adults, special time,
- 32:01certainly probably similar to what, you know, my dad and that
- 32:04generation went through in 1980 when, you know, I was just born
- 32:07essentially. So kind of cool for all of that
- 32:11and for the players. I mean, a lot of those guys,
- 32:14Matthews, Clayton Keller's, the the Hughes boys, the Kachuck
- 32:18boys, I mean, you name it, they were, you know, when when they
- 32:21grew up playing hockey, they were sort of like the next
- 32:24generation of getting USA Hockey on the map.
- 32:27You think about the Saint Louis hockey team with guys like Luke
- 32:31Conan and Clayton Keller. You know, so many of these kids,
- 32:35the Kachuck boys, like, you know, coming out of the same
- 32:38program is remarkable. The way the game has grown.
- 32:40Austin Matthews growing up playing in Arizona.
- 32:42I mean there's just so many cool stories from non traditional US
- 32:46hockey markets from decades ago that have their fingerprints all
- 32:50over this thing. Big conversation afterwards and
- 32:53not just for the men but also on the women.
- 32:55You go to overtime and it's cut down to three by three.
- 32:58I mean, is there a way? And certainly when we maybe get
- 33:00into the knockout round, even making a four on 4 or 10 minutes
- 33:04of full and then you switch over that way.
- 33:07What do you think is the best path here?
- 33:08Because a lot of hockey purists, yes, I like it because you know
- 33:12you're going to get a score pretty quick, usually when it
- 33:14goes to three on three. What do you think would be the
- 33:16best course for just in general for hockey when we get to this
- 33:19medal round? You know, Tran, I, I'm kind of
- 33:22traditional here. Like to me, if you just if you
- 33:25don't want anybody upset, you just played five on five like
- 33:28you do the Stanley Cup playoffs and at some point somebody's
- 33:30scoring a goal. I'm not, I'm not sure when they
- 33:34put three on three into the Olympic setting.
- 33:37Again, we only get it every four years.
- 33:39And with COVID in there at one point, things were kind of wacky
- 33:42as far as the actual years. And NHL players haven't always
- 33:45participated. So I haven't done my research on
- 33:48when that change was made, if it was just this Olympics or prior.
- 33:52But you know, I could see why people are going to be upset.
- 33:55You know, no matter who won or lost either of the men's or
- 33:57women's game, you know, it's the first thing you're going to go
- 34:00to. Wow.
- 34:00It was three on three. You know, just play 5 on five,
- 34:04put 20 minutes on the board, resurface the ice after that and
- 34:06play Stanley Cup Playoffs and play till somebody'd legs fall
- 34:09off and we got a winner. Indeed, Speaking of a winner,
- 34:12Matt Boldy, a winner, gold medal around his neck.
- 34:15Also Quinn Hughes. You call both of their games as
- 34:17they're both outstanding players for the Minnesota Wild Boldies
- 34:21goal. I mean, we we both been waiting
- 34:23for it, right, Joe? We know that this kids been
- 34:25special since the time he strapped them on, you know, here
- 34:29in Iowa. And then once he made his way to
- 34:31the big club, what a goal, what a beauty for him to split Taves
- 34:34in Mccarran, then Deke Bennington and find the back of
- 34:38the net. What a player he is and you see
- 34:39him every night. Yeah, he's special.
- 34:41And I know I've told you this, Kenny, like, you know, I don't
- 34:44this is not a knock on Karil Caprice off, but you could say
- 34:47Matt Boldy is the wild best player.
- 34:49He is a superstar. And I think I've told you guys
- 34:53this as well, like just talking with John Heinz the last couple
- 34:55years, the Wild head coach who was on the Team USA bench for
- 35:00the Olympic gold medal in the World Championships the last
- 35:02couple years, he has said that experiences like the Four
- 35:06Nations last year and the World Championships in the summer have
- 35:09helped a player like Matt Boldy immensely.
- 35:12It's allowed him to see how the other star players do it, how
- 35:15they prepare, what they say, their leadership, how hard they
- 35:18work, what they bring to the table.
- 35:20And it's given him an immense confidence in his game and
- 35:22really allowed his game to flourish for Minnesota on a
- 35:25nightly basis. So I think that's one of the
- 35:27kind of the things that I would look at, you know, no matter who
- 35:30your team is, if they had an Olympian, what does it do for
- 35:33them? Yeah, they might be a little
- 35:35tired when the NHL season resumes.
- 35:37But that experience for all these players, no matter where
- 35:39they are in their career, just listen to them talk.
- 35:41Guys with Stanley Cups and gold medals still saying what a great
- 35:44experience it was for some guys, their first experience.
- 35:48I just think you can't put enough value on what an
- 35:50experience like that the Olympics does for these guys
- 35:53from their own confidence, whether they had a huge role in
- 35:55the team or they were healthy scratches, being around, you
- 35:59know, the the upper, the 1% right of of your profession for
- 36:04that much time. And seeing, you know, getting to
- 36:06know the guys, but also seeing how they work and how good they
- 36:08are, how detailed they are. I think it'll help a lot of
- 36:11these players as their careers move along.
- 36:13Well, we know with Boldy there, yeah, you might be a little bit
- 36:16tired, but one guy that shouldn't be and should be fresh
- 36:18to go is going to be Karil Caprisov in the second-half of
- 36:21the year. We know what a talented score he
- 36:24is and what he can mean. What do you look at the back
- 36:26half? This was a red hot wild team
- 36:28going into the Olympic break. Colorado, five points in front
- 36:32of them right now for that top spot.
- 36:33Getting home ice in the first round.
- 36:35How important that will be against the stars and
- 36:37potentially in the second round. Lot of good vibes it feels like
- 36:40up in Minnesota. How good of a chance do you feel
- 36:42they have to make a run? I think it's your best chance
- 36:46you've had in a while. Last year trend, you could say
- 36:49that they should have won that playoff series against Vegas.
- 36:51I think the players in the locker room felt that, but they
- 36:53didn't get it done. You can say whatever you want,
- 36:55you didn't get it done, you didn't get it done.
- 36:57So this feels different. The addition of Quinn Hughes,
- 37:00we've talked about it last time was all with you guys.
- 37:02Like the special player, he's going to make this team a
- 37:06different team come Stanley Cup playoff time.
- 37:08They get 24 games to go. I don't think catching the ABS
- 37:12is super realistic as Colorado has a few games in hand and they
- 37:16just, you know, be hard pressed for them to finish with less
- 37:19than 110 or 12 points. You know, I don't know that the
- 37:22Wild could get to that threshold.
- 37:23But the biggest thing for Minnesota is going to be their
- 37:26health, How they're playing down the stretch Is the goal standing
- 37:29dialed in and then how much, you know, what will they do with
- 37:32trade deadline looming? Can they make another move?
- 37:34Will they bring in a center Iceman like so many people
- 37:36expect to boost their top 6 to give them one more score, give
- 37:40them more depth to make them a harder team and a best of seven?
- 37:43I'm excited for it. It's going to be a great run,
- 37:47kind of a Sprint to the finish line here.
- 37:49I think Minnesota is going to finish strong.
- 37:51I really do believe that. The guys that have been back and
- 37:53skating now the last handful of days are getting really pushed
- 37:56hard by associate coach Jack Capuano, again with John Heinz,
- 37:59the head coach over in Milan. Cappy's been running practices
- 38:03and he's been working hard. The players have said it, but he
- 38:07said it. He's kind of an old school guy.
- 38:09He's a Rhode Island guy. Like he's not going to, he's no
- 38:11nonsense, right? He's an old school coach and I
- 38:14think he's got this team in the days he was running things,
- 38:18getting back into great condition and that that can only
- 38:20bode well for guys who were a little banged up, guys that
- 38:24maybe went to Cabo, guys went to Cancun.
- 38:26You come back, sweat it out and get back into good game
- 38:29condition and be ready to go because then you get 24 games
- 38:33from basically, you know, essentially March 1st and on.
- 38:36It's going to be 1 heck of a push.
- 38:38And if I think it's the wild have good health, I really
- 38:40expect them to to finally to punch their take and get out of
- 38:44the first round this year. I'm.
- 38:46With you, coaches don't get medals, Joe.
- 38:49Is that true? Do you know that?
- 38:51I don't know that Kenny and actually really.
- 38:54That's crazy, right? That is crazy.
- 38:57And well, because I, you know, so I mentioned John Hines
- 39:01obviously is on the Team USA staff.
- 39:02We know Bill Guerin put the team together.
- 39:04Chris Kelleher was director of player personnel.
- 39:06He's a Wild assistant GM and the team orthopedist doctor.
- 39:11Joel Boyd is a Minnesota Wild team doctor and two of the
- 39:14athletic training members and John Worley and Travis Green are
- 39:17part of Minnesota staff of the Wild.
- 39:19I thought all those guys were coming back with medals.
- 39:22I hope they do, but that's news to me.
- 39:25If they don't, it kind of surprising.
- 39:27And you would think like, I don't know, this might sound a
- 39:29little off putting, but like what?
- 39:30What's the cost of one more gold medal?
- 39:33Yeah, I just got a text. They do not, they do not get
- 39:36medals. I just got a text from a bloody
- 39:37of mine. That sounds crazy to me.
- 39:40Hey, you know, you mentioned Bill Guerin.
- 39:41We'll end it on this. Let's Tresco one more man.
- 39:44The pressure he was on to put this roster together and some
- 39:47incredibly difficult decisions as Canada did.
- 39:50And I'm sure there were other countries that had difficult
- 39:52decisions as to the the the make up of the roster.
- 39:56This has to that had to be a huge, huge relief for Guerin,
- 39:59not only to win the overtime game to get to this point, but
- 40:02then to beat their rival yesterday and capture the gold.
- 40:06Right. Could you imagine if they got
- 40:07knocked out in the quarters? The amount of scrutiny,
- 40:10everything's validated now for Team USA, right from their
- 40:13process to how they did it. And you're right, there are
- 40:16snubs. It's like every All Star game
- 40:18and end of the year award ceremony when it comes to
- 40:20picking these elite teams. Like there are going to be guys
- 40:22left off just the way it is. Certain fan bases, players,
- 40:26organizations, you're going to feel that way.
- 40:28Could Jason Robertson have made a difference for Team USA?
- 40:30I'm sure you know, but they got it done.
- 40:33They got the gold medal and that's really, you know, that
- 40:36was their goal. So you can still second guess if
- 40:40you'd like, but they got it done.
- 40:41They punched the they punched their way to the to the finish
- 40:44line there. It wasn't always pretty, but I
- 40:47think again, Bill Guerin talked about they don't want the best
- 40:49players necessarily. They want the right players.
- 40:52You know, they felt the guys on that fourth line, the JT
- 40:55Miller's, the Vincent Trochecks of the world, if those were the
- 40:57guys that do the little things or not complain about 12 minutes
- 41:01or 9 minutes of ice time, those are the guys you want in those
- 41:03settings. And the five on three penalty
- 41:05there was those guys on the ice, just unbelievable.
- 41:08Great stuff. Joe O'Donnell, appreciate you
- 41:10doing this as always. I think you're in for a busy
- 41:14first couple of months. May hopefully into June will be
- 41:17better for business for us if the wild can make a long, long
- 41:20run in this thing. We shall see if they do.
- 41:23Great stuff, Joe, Thanks for jumping on.
- 41:24Appreciate it. And we'll talk to you down the
- 41:26road. OK, buddy.
- 41:27Yeah. Thanks guys.
- 41:28Yeah, good to talk to you, Joe O'Donnell, voice of the
- 41:31Minnesota Wild, formerly the voice of the Iowa Wild.
- 41:34So we got to know Joe. And now living his dream,
- 41:37calling NHL games. They return on Thursday night in
- 41:41Colorado. Take on the LATCH.
- 41:43Our breaks are shorter. Yes, yes, that's good.
- 41:46Yes, we're through football season.
- 41:47So back to the condensed versions of the.
- 41:50Commercial. That's good because I mean, my
- 41:51God, there was like 7 minutes sometimes.
- 41:53That's ridiculous. I'll take a time.
- 41:55I'll come back after this short break.
- 41:57Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 41:59Glad you're with us on Des Moines sports station One O 6.3
- 42:02KXNO. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 42:14Welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 42:16Scott Dockerman usually joins us on Monday.
- 42:19He'll join us middle of the week sometime.
- 42:21Can't believe the Combine's here.
- 42:22Already. Isn't it crazy?
- 42:23You take two weeks off, NFL gives you 2 weeks off and then
- 42:27bang right back into the into the news.
- 42:31Were you surprised Aaron Graves wasn't invited?
- 42:33Yeah, that's shocking to me. Yes, obviously he'll have the
- 42:37opportunity here in front of scouts, but yeah, just that
- 42:39chance to get in front of all of them in one place, I was
- 42:43surprised. And he's another guy.
- 42:45I mean, we've heard about the story.
- 42:46He got his a A before he was even out of high school.
- 42:49There's a guy that is high level.
- 42:51He would be great. Just talking to the scouts, you
- 42:53know, when they're going out of the interviews, it probably
- 42:55would have helped him even more and they'll get that
- 42:57opportunity. But you think it was scouts?
- 42:59It's not like they just go to Iowa City and that's it, right?
- 43:01How many stops are they making throughout the course of those
- 43:03weeks when they're going to? They're in Iowa City in the
- 43:05morning and it aims in the afternoon and then.
- 43:07And there's not the same time to meet with those scouts, to meet
- 43:09with those front office people and the people that'll be there.
- 43:11So that was a little bit of a blow.
- 43:14I know DACA has talked a little bit about that.
- 43:16So we'll get his perspective and a whole lot more from the
- 43:18combine. Later.
- 43:18Yeah, I look forward to that. As we said, Doc will join us.
- 43:22He's doing something to Purdue early in the week as well.
- 43:24Speaking of that, Ronthale Moore passed away.
- 43:26Wow. Yeah.
- 43:26Took his own life, apparently. Jesus, what a player he was in
- 43:30college. Good.
- 43:31God, Swiss Army knife. Oh my God.
- 43:33So many different things. Yeah, that Ohio State game.
- 43:35What, that clip where they got him surrounded and somehow
- 43:39escapes? Yeah.
- 43:40He was such a hell of a player and didn't play this year,
- 43:42right? He was hurt with the Vikings.
- 43:44I think he was, anyways, yeah. Did you, did you get much run on
- 43:49Monday after the Super Bowl? I mean, I know it's the Super
- 43:51Bowl, so you're going to kill some segments with it, but that
- 43:54had to be tough. It was such a boring game.
- 43:56Yeah. I, I mean talked about it, but
- 43:58it was, yeah, an opening segment.
- 44:01I don't even think that was a full opening segment.
- 44:03Yeah, normally it would have been in into the, you know, the
- 44:05segment #2 and found a way to reintroduce it in the second
- 44:09hour. But it was.
- 44:10Just so bad it was. It was not an entertaining game.
- 44:13Didn't get a touchdown to the fourth quarter.
- 44:14No, do I did pose this question, this was kind of the one thought
- 44:19exercise that I did have. We saw the Seattle team and
- 44:22outside when they played the Rams, nobody could move the ball
- 44:24against him. Our defense is coming back.
- 44:27Eagles 2 years ago, Seahawks this year, and very simply, I
- 44:33have a front four. I have a front four.
- 44:34They can get to the quarterback and that can cure a lot of ills
- 44:38because that Eagles team, we've seen, there's some warts there.
- 44:40We certainly saw them show up this season.
- 44:42Seattle, we've seen them at different times this year.
- 44:45But if you can very simply rush the passer, we saw Denver.
- 44:50Yes, absolutely. We've seen the change in the
- 44:52evolution of football and all the passing offense and maybe
- 44:55we're finally starting to. I like that the other way.
- 44:57Yeah, that's a good point. I'm all for it.
- 44:59I mean, I love defensive matchups.
- 45:01I really do. Seattle was just much, so much
- 45:04the better team. How about Tirico's week too,
- 45:06right? Signs off the air, gets on an
- 45:08airplane and off he goes to Milan.
- 45:10And he was really good. He was really good.
- 45:12He's such a pro. Wonder what they're paying him.
- 45:14He's got to be amongst the highest paid broadcasters,
- 45:18right? I mean, who else would be in
- 45:20that genre? Nance.
- 45:21Not anymore. Yet like Van Pelt is well
- 45:23compensated I'm sure, but that again guest debating maybe in
- 45:27the five to $7,000,000 range something like that him 1520
- 45:33because both did buck get 15,000,000 a year.
- 45:36Not sure what he got I. Think for whatever reason, that
- 45:38number is kind of sticking in my mind.
- 45:40I was in that $15 million range. They're getting a whole lot more
- 45:43than ESPN is for Buck with Tarico.
- 45:46And now you throw basketball on top of it in the Olympics and he
- 45:49is so talented. He really is so good.
- 45:51Yeah, Smooth, very smooth. Had that little, not his fondest
- 45:56moment back in the early 90s. We got in trouble at ESPN, but
- 46:01he's resurrected his career, no doubt about that.
- 46:04All right, our number two Bill Seals will kick things off.
- 46:07We'll get back into Iowa State as they fall to BYU.
- 46:10Stay out in Utah and play Utah tomorrow night.
- 46:13They'll be a huge favorite, right?
- 46:15Yeah, that's a favorite. Double digits, I'm almost
- 46:17positive I saw when I was looking earlier in the week.
- 46:19They'll be maybe 14 if memory serves as what it is.
- 46:22Huge favorite. Yeah.
- 46:23So men's and women. For the youths.
- 46:26Oh, I forgot about the FS. We'll see him tomorrow night at
- 46:308:00 and that's an FS1 game. I think hour 2 is next.
- 46:33Miller and Condon back with more after this.
