- 1:03for us to continue on with our look at some previously unheard episodes of the
- 1:08lineup. We're going to be right in the middle of Wally Meyer's run as
- 1:15Matt Greb. This episode originally aired May twenty ninth of nineteen fifty one,
- 1:23and it's called the Hiccupping Hamster. Hemostatic case. That was a mouthful and
- 1:29I said it slowly because I wanted to say it right. Yeah, they
- 1:33got clever with the titles around then. Anyway, let's go ahead and take
- 1:36a listen. Wouldn't you like to sit a little closer mister Phillips, Oh
- 2:08oh, lieutenant, no, thanks, this is fine. I'm a little
- 2:13far sighted. I just spoke to your wife. She's with missus Griswold.
- 2:16Oh, I'm glad. They're quite good friends. You know. Griswold kept
- 2:21pretty much to himself, but she's very friendly. Shame she had to be
- 2:24married to a too man like that. He was a smart attorney, too
- 2:29smart. Well, he certainly wasted it working for men like this. Will
- 2:31Gillow just a cheap gambler from what I've read. No, kid, just
- 2:35have mister Phillips, he's smart. To have your attention, please cigarette no,
- 2:38no, thanks. Your people out there on the other side of the
- 2:40wire in the audience room, may I have your attention? Please, thank
- 2:45you. My name is Greb. Sergeant Matt Greb Alex played the lineup.
- 2:50Each of the suspects you will see will be I always prided myself never forgetting
- 2:53a face. Well, see one you remember. Look he's here, I'll
- 2:58know it. Just remember, of course he was quite a distance away.
- 3:00But as I told you, I am fast when I asked the questions or
- 3:05identifications. Call out the number if you're sure. You're not too sure of
- 3:08the suspect. Heaven held. The officers who took your name will assist you
- 3:13there seated among you the questions. I asked these suspects Emily to get a
- 3:16natural tone of voice, so do not pay too much attention to their answers,
- 3:21as they often lie breag on the line. All right, move up
- 3:25to the end of the stage, right up to the end. Now,
- 3:28come on, sep it moving, all right, turn it, face front,
- 3:32hands to your sides, look straight ahead. Okay. Number one,
- 3:38Marvin Peck open charge. Where do you live, Marvin Well? No Hotel
- 3:42eight Maine. What's Sydney, Marvin? We don't have an ap of Maine,
- 3:46Biloxi, by the way to treating out of town visitor. Where you're
- 3:49staying here, Marvin? Where the friend? I don't know the address.
- 3:52Where do you work, Marvin, Biloxi. I'm on a vacation. You
- 3:54came here to see Maxwell Gillow, didn't you, Marvin? I don't even
- 3:58know Ruguillo. Nineteen forty nine, you were arrested in a raid on the
- 4:01gambling house operated by Max Ruggilo. I don't even know Ragilo. The Bilaxi
- 4:05police have been found as you work at crap Table and a place owned by
- 4:09Max Rugilo. I told you I don't even know alright, Marvin, all
- 4:13right, step back. Number two, Fred Terrell, open charge? Where
- 4:17do you lift? Fred? I live on Eastern Airnea sageant for sixty three
- 4:21to p exact. And you work for Ragulo, don't you? Fred?
- 4:26Well, I really don't know who I work for, Sergeant. I just
- 4:29do my job and pick up my money every week. Doesn't make much difference
- 4:33what the fella's name is. See what were you doing when you were picked
- 4:36up? Fred? Having a friendly drink with a girl, you know,
- 4:41relaxing. How many times have you been arrested? Fred? Let's see it
- 4:46hard to remember. Just off him four or five again, because we all
- 4:50make mistakes now and then, Sergeant. I remember once when I was a
- 4:55kid, my mother told me Fred's and Fred, whatever you say? Three?
- 5:00Ben Sampson, open chart. Step up, Bennie, hold your head
- 5:03up? Where do you live? Broad More Hotel forty fifth? Come on,
- 5:06speak up, Bennie forty fifth Stree? Lieutenant? Where you working?
- 5:10I think? Now just a minute, let me be sure where are you
- 5:13working? I'm sure that the lieutenant. I was so surprised. I guess
- 5:18I didn't really experise all Number three for interrogation. Say you mind if I
- 5:38open the window. It's stuffie in here. No go ahead. You know,
- 5:42I'm surprised if Benny, this isn't his kind of work. I wish
- 5:46Phillips had seen the guy with him. He probably did the dirty work.
- 5:50Suppose Ruguillo did this set up? How do we get to him? I
- 5:55don't know, and I'm going to enjoy trying. Federal boys will send us
- 5:59a large bouquet if we can nail him. When was Griswold supposed to testify
- 6:02her next week? He could have told that committee enough to crucify Ruguillo.
- 6:06Well, must be a bug for realism. One of his two hundred dollars
- 6:11suits got blood all over it. Yeah, must go. I have a
- 6:15chat with Benny. I got a good feeling about this man. I closed
- 6:19the window when you're explowing all the papers, Benny, don't you know how
- 6:40to say anything without cousin? Sorry, I didn't know you were sensitive.
- 6:43We're all sensitive, Benny, even Ruggilo sensitive. He's not gonna like you
- 6:47getting yourself identified. How don't you guys knock off? I got nothing to
- 6:50do with Ruguillo. I wasn't in no vacant lay no better, Benny,
- 6:55that witness pegged you cold. Who was a guy with you? Look,
- 6:58fellow, you're wasting your the guy with a shotgun? Benny, who was
- 7:01he? Or did you blast Griswold? Maybe you had more nerve than I
- 7:05figured you for. We know Ruguillo wanted Griswold eliminated Benny. But right now
- 7:10you're carrying the load. It's a big load, Benny. We can show
- 7:13you up real easy. Let's have it, Benny, who is the guy
- 7:15with you? We'll keep Rugillo off your back. Benny, come on,
- 7:17don't be a sucker. Guys work pretty good together, don't you. Only
- 7:20I ain't impressed. I've seen it better in movie. This isn't the movie's
- 7:25Benny Griswold is good and dead. And you know actor Benny Rugguilo stage just
- 7:29killing and we know it. Yeah, why don't you leave too, muscle
- 7:32man? Don't take a fly him? What's up? Amster? Ross just
- 7:36wanted and says he's got something got him in your office? Look, I
- 7:41told you for the last time. One more man dropped dead. Yeah,
- 7:44I'll be upstairs. Okay, what did you say about me? Ben?
- 7:49I went in the Hamster's mind, says he's got something on the Grizzwold killing.
- 7:54Is he sob Yeah? Look I don't believe it either. Lieutenant Hampson.
- 8:03Oh you're looking good, lieutenant. Why you ain't look so good?
- 8:05News? What's on your uh? Quit drinking in a just weekends during the
- 8:13week. I don't touch it. I'm glad to hear it. And what
- 8:15have you got? I'm pretty busy. You know. It's funny. Since
- 8:18I quit drinking, I noticed a lot more. Why, I can almost
- 8:24see. I heard about Benny being picked up, and I remembered what I
- 8:28noticed that never used to have. What did you notice as well? I
- 8:31was in Louise and not drinking, the girls, just visiting with the boys.
- 8:35You know it did hard not drinking. If you keep talking to Benny
- 8:41was there having a snort and there was a guy with him. Remember when
- 8:46I had my own place and you busted four bottles of good whiskey in two
- 8:48chairs resting a guy named INCINDI, well that's the guy that was with Benny,
- 8:54George Vincent. Anyway, a couple of hours later I heard Benny had
- 8:58been picked up. And then when I read wy get picked up? Thanks
- 9:01Hamster. Oh yeah, sure, you see, I figured you'd like to
- 9:05know. Never paid much attention to things when I was drinking. Man drag
- 9:09out a package on George VINCENTI, well, yash, I want to fast
- 9:11right ben and put out on apb on him. Anything comes in after six,
- 9:16I'm having dinner at Matz. I figured it was important. I wouldn't
- 9:18have bothered you. Yeah, it's very important, Hamster, thanks a lot.
- 9:22Higgs was important because his hold he was pretty hot. Since Benning got
- 9:24picked up, Max re Getter gets talked about a lot. What about Roguello.
- 9:30Yeah, I won't bother you any Lieutenant. Gitter couldn't bother you.
- 9:33But from what I heard, he wouldn't like you digging around too much in
- 9:37his attic. Since Benning got picked up. He wouldn't like you thinking he
- 9:41had any part of what happened. Oh, nothing we're getting would bother you,
- 9:45he would. Oh that Benny's almost irritating. Hello, Hampster, Hella
- 9:50is, Oh you're looking fine. It's fine. You didn't go on,
- 9:54Hamster, and thanks again. Oh, I'm glad to have lieutenant. And
- 9:56don't think you owe me a thing, because you don't. I had to
- 10:00help, unless you wouldn't mind telling your boys to kind of leave me alone
- 10:03on weekends. Sure, well, thank you, glad to see a bullet
- 10:11news. Yeah, Benny's playmate was George Vincetti. Remember, well, that's
- 10:16more like it now. The shotgun makes sense. I should pick them up
- 10:20tonight. What time do we eat? Oh? About seven? We walk
- 10:24out in the middle of dinner. Again, Molly'll have kittens. Wouldn't you
- 10:28think she'd get used to it after all these years? No? I guess
- 10:31not. Well, come on, let's go. Sure, a lot of
- 10:50new houses going on. Oh yeah, a guy named Aldner's building a new
- 10:54development right near us. There's talk they're going to subdivide the golf court us.
- 11:00Muh, this town's sure getting big. Remember when this was just a
- 11:05dirt road. Sure it wasn't us for Miles, Well, I could have
- 11:09bought ten acres right in there for Matt. It's the custom for automobile traffic
- 11:41to drive on the left in Japan. Learn this and other distinctive ways of
- 11:46life before visiting or being based in this delightful oriental nation. The Japanese are
- 11:52extremely polite and neat. Therefore, you were expected to take your shoes off
- 11:56before entering any Japanese home. Hotel or temple. Your stay in Japan or
- 12:03any other country will be far more agreeable, and the people will be much
- 12:07more friendly if you take the time to observe their native customs. What's in
- 12:35the papers? Mitchell? Oh, Yanks lost yesterday? I've done got to
- 12:41Kelly. Lieutenant. He'll be all right. They've been in there an hour,
- 12:50fifteen minutes. He'll be all right. You like the racist lieutenant?
- 12:54Yeah, yeah, they're fine. I hope you don't like them the way
- 12:58my wife likes them. You don't bet much money on one horse, just
- 13:01a little on all of them. Why don't you sit down and relax?
- 13:05Don't do you no good? Walking off a lot of shoe ler the breaking
- 13:11spot? How bad it gets to be kind of a hobby chargeant greb.
- 13:18He's gonna be okay. I'll bet you how long you been on this?
- 13:20To tell me? Sure? Seven years? Seven years. I've been sitting
- 13:24here watching him come in. Take my word for it. Here's a doctor.
- 13:31How about it? How is he? I think you headed irish and
- 13:37he's fine. Accuse him of faking just able to get a rest? Is
- 13:41he conscious? I just came around. He's got a slight concussion, a
- 13:45lot of bad bruises. But I'll get him a pretty nurse. I want
- 13:50to see him. Yeah, I have to stay flat in his back for
- 13:52a couple of days and I'll call Molly now. Is that is why?
- 13:56Yeah? I wanted to know first. I got George and Sunday spotted where
- 14:01the apartment house on the north side seventy fourth Street. Doc, tell Mat
- 14:05i'll be in later. Tell Mitchell to call Molly. Will yam. Sure,
- 14:07let's go quiet, Oh, Doc, as long as that's okay,
- 14:11better save that pretty nurse. You'll just spoil him. How's Matt, He's
- 14:41all right. Ash. Sunday's on the third floor, three or nine.
- 14:43We cleared everybody out of the building block staked out. Four men in the
- 14:46back in the alley, two minute the side entrance, anybody inside. Two
- 14:50men in the lobby, covering the elevator and the stairs. I want to
- 14:52come along. Sure, that's okay, uh slight concussion gilos playing for keeps.
- 15:09Yeah, but if we get Vincenti in one piece, I'm gonna make
- 15:13regular pay for a lot of things, including my car. It's next to
- 15:18the last door on the left. Hold it. It's Vincetti nuts. But
- 15:30you know he'd step out and spot us. He knows me. He knows
- 15:33me too, and he's got a good idea why we're here. Well,
- 15:35no sense being back with about it. Come on, VINCENTI open up.
- 15:41Okay, let's go in. Boys in the aveny. Okay, there he
- 15:50is halfway down. You busted the window, Pesha, go down from here,
- 15:52right, pick the stairs. He's not the man, right, all
- 16:02right? Please stop? Please, here's my gun? Okay, yeah,
- 16:10please stop? Oh shut up? Shoot, that's okay. Shoot? What
- 16:15took you so long? Shoot a see nervous? And where's killam? Then
- 16:37there's a part when I got two man steaked out asher inion, i'e still
- 16:40looking for the gun. Well, let's talk to Vincentni. Why did you
- 16:52kill Luther, Griswolf and SENNI I didn't. We'll pay you to do it,
- 16:56nobody. You didn't do it for nothing. I didn't do it.
- 17:00What'd you do with a shotgun? Look? I don't know what you're talking?
- 17:03Makes Rugillo. I don't work for Gillow. I don't even Why did
- 17:07you blow up Griswold? I didn't. I tell you we've got Benny Sampson.
- 17:11He said you didn't. I don't know Benny samps you're lying. You
- 17:14did a stretch together. I don't know him. You didn't do nothing.
- 17:17Huh yeah, yeah, I didn't do nothing. What did you run for?
- 17:19Well? I well, I got scared. I didn't think it.
- 17:22Nearly got dead, but not thinking. Okay, okay, resisting arrest,
- 17:26lock me up, resisting arrest. I saw it with intented I llegal possession.
- 17:30I can think them up all day and make them stick. Okay,
- 17:33but I did knock off Griswold. Annie Samson says you're dead, Benny Samson,
- 17:37Betty Samson. I don't even know the bar. I got shoved off
- 17:40the road tonight. There's a cup in the hospital. The town's full of
- 17:42lousy driving with shotguns. I don't know nothing about no shotgun. You just
- 17:47don't know nothing. No, I don't know nothing. The words out that
- 17:52Ruguillo wants me dead. If I get nosy, well that's that's Ruguillo's business,
- 17:56and you'll know you want Benny Sampson staked out on a bake I don't
- 18:00know, non staked out on a vacant lite l Griswold and ran back and
- 18:03got your car. I wasn't in no vacant line. He tripped and a
- 18:07witness spotted him. Benny spilled all over the prices. I'm getting pretty tired
- 18:10of this. Oh yeah, you get an awful brave for a guy who
- 18:15was crawling around beggar not to get a face full of bullets. What did
- 18:17you want me to do? He shoot and I have loved it. I
- 18:19want max u Gillo, Well, then go get it. I want to
- 18:22sign statement that he paid you to kill Grizsbold. Hey, I thought you
- 18:29said Benny spilled all. He said you were with him and the lot.
- 18:32He didn't say who paid you for the job. Oh sure, where's the
- 18:36carbon centy? What the car you climbed in after your shot? Griswold?
- 18:41Hey, go ahead, you can work on me all night, make it
- 18:45all week. We've got the time. Where's the car? I don't know
- 18:52where's the shotgun? I don't know what you get five to one? Anyway,
- 18:56we'll see Ruguillo won't get you off. I don't make this stick.
- 19:00Okay, how much rigilill pay you? He did two hundred five hundred good
- 19:06professional job, right up your alley? How much VINCENTI and all day suck
- 19:11that's very funny. I was only kidding. Can Yeah, you want to
- 19:15see the shotgun? Yeah, bring it right in. Hello, VINCETI und
- 19:21your car? I don't own no car. Gara on eighty fifth Street.
- 19:26Fingerprint boys are on it. Now, here's the gun? Where'd you find
- 19:32it? Under the back seat? Want me to run it up to ballistics?
- 19:33Yeah, you look off of VINCENTI. You should get more sleep.
- 19:40Okay, take him downstairs and book them right, let's go. Hey,
- 19:42you'll never make it stick. I don't make it stick so good. You're
- 19:45burning a month. Come out. Hey, no, wait a minute,
- 19:48wait a minute. No deals, Now you're a sinch. Come out.
- 19:49No, no, wait a minute, wait a minute, now, wait
- 19:52a minute. You you want Regila, aren't you? What do you want?
- 19:56A break? A break? I can give them to you if you
- 19:59If you give me a break, a shot and the evidence, you'll get
- 20:02first degree. How can I give you a break? You got weight?
- 20:03Check out where you can throw it around? Second degree? I'll try.
- 20:07I don't want to hang. I said i'd try. Raguillo paid me.
- 20:12Benny Sampson. Yeah, he didn't give you no statement. He lied a
- 20:18little. Don't forgive us won't you. Good figure, Let's got a stenographer
- 20:22and then go over and spoil mister Llo's dinner. He's still in there.
- 20:45Ben's with him, two men eating with him. That's his car they sit
- 20:49in. There's a guy in it. Look up. Let's show him how
- 20:52careless he can get. Get him fast, and don't let him touch that
- 20:55horn. Don't move, don't touch that horn. I told you to stay
- 21:03away from that horn. You touch him. I got him all right,
- 21:06drag him out of the way. Right, let's go who's that over there?
- 21:19To? Where do you want? What is this? Guthrie? You're
- 21:27under arrest for glow. Keep your hands on the table. Boys, look
- 21:32Gouthrie and you're finishing dinner and two four four jokes. I've got Benny Sampson
- 21:37and George vind Setting short. I've got a sworn statement neccessory before the fact
- 21:44for what fact? Murder? I hope it will be first degree. Now,
- 21:48wipe off your fat chin and let's go. Okay, but you're going
- 21:53to be a real sorry Cuthrie up, boys, just walk out quietly.
- 22:00Do you want me to shake him down? Outside? I don't want to
- 22:03bother the customers. Just shoot them and thinking out of line. Both okay,
- 22:14don't shoot. Don't shoot? All right, you get over there with
- 22:17the glow and both of you put your hands behind your head. I'm sorry,
- 22:19Benny, select me so fast. All right, everybody calm down.
- 22:22It's okay, okay, Ben, Yeah, you get an ambulance for this
- 22:26one. A bum nearly broke my jaw. You sure paid for it.
- 22:30You made him a dead bum. Hi, you look just lovely. Man.
- 22:56Molly was here this afternoon. She doesn't think much of your Yeah,
- 23:02just left marks for Gillew. He's sorry he ever had us run off the
- 23:06road. You got him with everything. We picked up George Vinceti and a
- 23:11shotgun, and he signed a sweet little statement. I feel better already.
- 23:18Good evening, sergeant. Hello, and you're a lieutenant Guthrie. That's right.
- 23:23You can stay a few more minutes, but the sergeant will have to
- 23:26take a nap. Oh I'm not sleepy, Oh you will be. Just
- 23:30drink this. Oh come on, Oh that's fine. Now say good night
- 23:40to the lieutenant, and if you want anything, just ring. No longer
- 23:42than a few minutes, lieutenant, how about that? And I told the
- 23:52doc Nutt no, man, Yeah, move the lineup, or before you
- 24:21pass the innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderer. Listen again
- 24:26next week when we again bring you the lineup. May I have your attention?
- 24:33Bees, you people out there on the other side of the wire in
- 24:37the audience room, May I have your attention? Please? Thank you.
- 24:41My name is Greb, Sergeant Matt Greb. I'll explain the line up to
- 24:45you. Each of the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call
- 24:48off a number, then name in charge. If you have any questions or
- 24:52identifications, please remember the number assigned to the prisoner as I call his name
- 25:00the end of each line. When I ask for questions or identifications, all
- 25:03up the number. If you're sure or not too sure of the suspect,
- 25:07have him known the opposite. The lineup, starring Bill Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben
- 25:18Guthrie and Wally Mayer as Sergeant Matt Greb, was written by Blake Edwards and
- 25:22Dick Quine, with music by Eddie Dunnstudy. The Lineup is produced and directed
- 25:26by Jimi dol Vayer. This is CBS the Columbia Broadcasting Systems welcome back,
- 25:40a very solid episode. The staging on this just very well done dramatically.
- 25:47Liked how they were just in the middle of the conversation and they made the
- 25:52shooting so abrupt, and that I think made it more realistic. I also
- 25:56really appreciate the chemistry between Willie, William Johnstone and Wally Meyer in this program
- 26:03and in this particular run of the lineup, and it was actually a situation,
- 26:08I think where there was probably more warmth and chemistry between these two than
- 26:15you would see here between Friday and Romero on Dragnet. I have occasionally wondered
- 26:21if the way this relationship played on radio didn't influence Jack Webb with his choice
- 26:27ultimately of Ben Alexander and the Frank Smith character. Now for some listener comment
- 26:34and feedback again on the previous time showing this time slot the Man from Homicide.
- 26:41Ida says this is really a hard boiled detective to the Max, and
- 26:45Stevens says, I wanted to email some comments about episode fifteen forty six Man
- 26:52from Homicide, but I think you really nailed it in your on comments on
- 26:56episode fifteen forty seven, Philip Carlow, I've decided that I don't really like
- 27:03really hard boiled detective. My only addition to your comments would be that Patnovac
- 27:07at least had bizarre similes and the metaphors of Docco of Jacko Madigan who live
- 27:14in the show, The Man from Homicide had nothing well, I wouldn't say
- 27:18go that far, and a overall locked Man from Homicide, though not as
- 27:22much as Philip Marlow or Barry Craig, Richard Diamond or Rogues Gallery. I
- 27:30think even the over the top nature of Lieutenant Dana is kind of a feature,
- 27:36and it's an interesting show for three weeks, and I wasn't aware of
- 27:41any American old time radio show at least that kind of went that direction,
- 27:47which makes it worth hearing. But I've pretty much listened to everything else we're
- 27:52going to play in nothing maybe Doc Easter, but there's only one episode of
- 27:59that comes close in that way. All right, Well, that will do
- 28:04it for today. We will be back tomorrow with the aforementioned adventures of Philip
- 28:10Marlow, and we continue on with the lineup next week. In the meantime,
