- 0:50Speaker 3: them here today. Hollis Lewis is on one mic and
- 0:54Speaker 3: Lisa Odie on the other.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Hello, It's today's.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Kind of an interesting thing because it's gonna be the
- 1:00Speaker 3: first time that we've actually put out a subject so
- 1:04Speaker 3: that you could hear the conversation about it, and then
- 1:08Speaker 3: we're gonna come in and then we're gonna actually discuss it.
- 1:10Speaker 4: So for from get up.
- 1:13Speaker 3: If you haven't heard this, it's a get up on Instagram, take.
- 1:19Speaker 4: A listen, and then we'll be right back as soon
- 1:21Speaker 4: as you hear.
- 1:21Speaker 5: It, there was no issue in Jordan was around, there
- 1:24Speaker 5: was no issue in Kobe was around. There's no issue
- 1:27Speaker 5: in Sydney Crosby is around, There's no issue in Wayne
- 1:29Speaker 5: Gretzky was around. Because those are true leaders. They lead
- 1:32Speaker 5: by example, Sidney Crosby, hockey Canada, those players, both Canada
- 1:37Speaker 5: and US. It was the players that did that for
- 1:39Speaker 5: the Four Nations.
- 1:40Speaker 4: That's not the league.
- 1:41Speaker 5: The league set it up, but the players went out
- 1:43Speaker 5: there and decided and said, you know what, boys, we're
- 1:46Speaker 5: all in.
- 1:47Speaker 4: When is the NBA gonna do that?
- 1:49Speaker 5: Because you know, I haven't sat down and watched the
- 1:51Speaker 5: NBA consistently since Kobe. I love basketball, love the players.
- 1:56Speaker 5: I think Lebron's great, I think Katie's great. Steph Curry
- 1:58Speaker 5: love watching them. But you gotta be on the court.
- 2:02Speaker 5: You gotta be there, and when you're there, you gotta
- 2:04Speaker 5: go all in. The fans got to feel that they're
- 2:06Speaker 5: getting their money's worth, and right now, there's a big
- 2:09Speaker 5: difference between what the NHL is doing with those.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Events and what the NBA is doing.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Four Nations works because the players are all in.
- 2:16Speaker 3: All right, okay, And that's a PK stubborn. He's a
- 2:20Speaker 3: hockey former hockey player and he's an analyst now and
- 2:23Speaker 3: he's commenting on the NBA versus the NHL All Star
- 2:27Speaker 3: Game and just overall effort.
- 2:30Speaker 4: And I have to admit I think he's right.
- 2:33Speaker 3: And I think part of where basketball is going is
- 2:38Speaker 3: a dangerous place. I think it's a really really dangerous
- 2:41Speaker 3: place because I think people because and maybe it's just
- 2:46Speaker 3: too many games.
- 2:47Speaker 4: It could be very it, that could very always. I
- 2:50Speaker 4: get it. I get it. We can't say that.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I'm just saying maybe now these players are kind of
- 2:55Speaker 3: feel like they don't want to play, they don't have
- 2:57Speaker 3: the ability to play. Look, I mean when you see
- 3:00Speaker 3: the Lebron sitting on the on the sideline, I mean,
- 3:04Speaker 3: raph that's hurt.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I'm hurt every day.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yeah, he actually made a comment and again and it's
- 3:10Speaker 3: like a big just failure to read the room. He
- 3:12Speaker 3: had made a comment the other day and he's talking
- 3:15Speaker 3: about like this is Lebron tweeting about like their back
- 3:18Speaker 3: to back schedules. So they had like two like they
- 3:20Speaker 3: had a back to back and then they had a
- 3:22Speaker 3: day off and then another back to back around sort
- 3:24Speaker 3: of the West Coast and It's just like bro Man.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Read the room like nobody cares.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You're getting paid millions, gazillions of dollars and you're complaining
- 3:32Speaker 3: about having to play on back to back days.
- 3:35Speaker 6: So I go ahead, no, no, no, you finished ahead no.
- 3:38Speaker 3: And I was just saying, like, in addition to just
- 3:41Speaker 3: PK's comments, just directly about the All Star Game, to me,
- 3:44Speaker 3: the bigger, the bigger, he said the quiet part out
- 3:48Speaker 3: loud where he took a direct shot.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Of Lebron James.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think so as a leader of the NBA and
- 3:54Speaker 3: just the overall effort that people are following his effort.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And hold your thought there just one second, because because again,
- 4:01Speaker 3: now we're talking about someone who wants to be and
- 4:04Speaker 3: a lot of people think is the goat.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Now when you start talking about being the goat.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And you are setting the example in the tone, the tone,
- 4:15Speaker 3: Oh are you what.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Is that tone that you're setting? Go ahead, Lisa, I
- 4:19Speaker 4: know you're.
- 4:20Speaker 6: No, no, no, no. I was just gonna say so.
- 4:22Speaker 7: So here's the other side of that.
- 4:23Speaker 8: I understand what you're saying about reading the room, and
- 4:26Speaker 8: and you know, there's a difference between being injured and actually,
- 4:29Speaker 8: you know, being hurt that's two completely different things to
- 4:32Speaker 8: two different settings.
- 4:33Speaker 7: But what would have happened.
- 4:35Speaker 8: Let's say he would have played hurt what he told
- 4:39Speaker 8: you know, the media, and he did get hurt, he
- 4:41Speaker 8: did sustain an injury, and then he's out for the
- 4:45Speaker 8: next few games that are pretty essential and then making
- 4:49Speaker 8: a deep playoff run.
- 4:50Speaker 7: So I can see.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Where you might make a decision that if you're on
- 4:54Speaker 8: borderline hurt that could possibly turn into an injury. Would
- 4:59Speaker 8: you sit out a game that, I mean, if you're
- 5:01Speaker 8: a Lebron, I say yes.
- 5:03Speaker 3: But I think the problem with that and I understand
- 5:05Speaker 3: and that's actually exactly exactly, But the problem is he
- 5:09Speaker 3: didn't tell the NBA. He didn't tell them that he
- 5:13Speaker 3: wasn't playing, but just right before the game. And again,
- 5:16Speaker 3: and to me, PK's comments weren't necessarily about the All
- 5:21Speaker 3: Star Game. His comments were about this is Lebron's era,
- 5:26Speaker 3: and this is a terrible era to watch basketball, and
- 5:29Speaker 3: it starts with Lebron. So is this Lebron's fault as
- 5:33Speaker 3: to what we're seeing? Because I think what we can
- 5:36Speaker 3: say is that during this era, this is the era
- 5:39Speaker 3: of power player empowerment, and this was ushered in by Lebron.
- 5:43Speaker 3: But kind of the other side of that is that
- 5:46Speaker 3: players ain't playing hard every game. You're not getting the
- 5:51Speaker 3: night in, the night out games that just the regular
- 5:53Speaker 3: season games.
- 5:53Speaker 4: They aren't really competitive. Some are just bad watches.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Guys don't want to play back to back, low management,
- 6:00Speaker 3: banana boat boy, banana boat boys.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Just that whole vibe. It's just not competitive and it's
- 6:08Speaker 4: not like fierce like it once was.
- 6:10Speaker 7: So it's a it's a culture is shit.
- 6:12Speaker 3: It's a culture issue, and the culture starts with Lebron.
- 6:15Speaker 3: According to Pika and and again, if you see that,
- 6:19Speaker 3: let's say you're a college star, okay, and and and
- 6:22Speaker 3: you're you're gonna end up in the NBA and you're
- 6:26Speaker 3: gonna likely be a top pick. Who are you looking
- 6:31Speaker 3: at and what's what what example is he showing? And
- 6:35Speaker 3: again to his sitting out. If I read this right,
- 6:40Speaker 3: they weren't aware of that until late and he's just
- 6:44Speaker 3: a few hours, just.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Hours before the game.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Now, I can't say that I know the NBA structure
- 6:52Speaker 3: of how injuries work and how you and who decides
- 6:56Speaker 3: if you're playing or not. I know in the NFL
- 7:00Speaker 3: you go to the trainer, if you don't go to
- 7:02Speaker 3: the trainer and you're talking about your out but you
- 7:05Speaker 3: got issues.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Yeah, this is an All Star game. It might work different.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Ye, but I'm gonna say, yes it does. But before,
- 7:14Speaker 3: if you know you're not gonna play, you're taking somebody's seat.
- 7:17Speaker 4: That that part is true. So if I know I'm
- 7:20Speaker 4: not gonna play.
- 7:23Speaker 3: At the time that I say I'm not gonna play,
- 7:25Speaker 3: I'm gonna give someone else an opportunity. I'm in the
- 7:29Speaker 3: Pro Bowl and I all of a sudden, I'm in Hawaii,
- 7:32Speaker 3: all expenses paid, and I'm I'm I walk I walk
- 7:35Speaker 3: out with no gear on day of the game, and
- 7:40Speaker 3: you say you're hurt, Say I'm hurt.
- 7:42Speaker 4: How's that?
- 7:43Speaker 3: But see, to me, that's just not the issue. The
- 7:47Speaker 3: issue is the culture that's being laid to me, regardless
- 7:50Speaker 3: of whether he plays an All Star game, Like, who
- 7:52Speaker 3: really cares?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Don't you know what I'm saying. I think people do.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I think the people the people do care about some
- 7:58Speaker 3: people do care about the All Star Game.
- 8:03Speaker 4: The ones who watched, the ones who watched. But here's
- 8:06Speaker 4: my things.
- 8:07Speaker 7: Paid for tickets to.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Get absolutely absolutely and the reality of it.
- 8:15Speaker 3: In my contract, I might have an incentive if I
- 8:18Speaker 3: make the All Star Game, then I get extra number.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And thatay, yes, absolutely, and I'm going to make the case.
- 8:28Speaker 3: And I can't prove this, but I know I can
- 8:30Speaker 3: tell you and and and and both of you all
- 8:32Speaker 3: kind of have a good understanding of a locker room
- 8:36Speaker 3: dude lady. When there's that dude that's in the locker room,
- 8:42Speaker 3: that's that lady that's in the locker room who thinks
- 8:44Speaker 3: that they're better than you, and you can just feel it,
- 8:47Speaker 3: but you kind of got an issue. I can I
- 8:49Speaker 3: can remember when herschel Walker. I can remember when herschel
- 8:51Speaker 3: Walker showed up in in the locker room.
- 8:56Speaker 9: Bright.
- 8:56Speaker 3: We wasn't nobody. Everybody had a feeling about him. But
- 9:01Speaker 3: regardless of how good that Lebron though, and I think
- 9:05Speaker 3: when we tried no no Lebron, I think the problem
- 9:09Speaker 3: is is that you don't feel that with Lebron. I
- 9:12Speaker 3: think that from the conversations that other players had about
- 9:15Speaker 3: Kobe and Mike, there was that mystique like when they
- 9:18Speaker 3: walk in, I'm better than you and you're gonna have
- 9:21Speaker 3: to catch up and you're gonna have to work harder
- 9:22Speaker 3: to be just as good as me. If not better,
- 9:25Speaker 3: and I think with Lebron you don't have that. Lebron
- 9:28Speaker 3: is kind of one of the guys. As far as
- 9:31Speaker 3: the culture of this current era of the NBA, it's
- 9:35Speaker 3: like that. I mean you they had a conversation with
- 9:37Speaker 3: like Anthony Edwards, who's a young gun out there place
- 9:40Speaker 3: with Minnesota, like, and they was talking about who's the
- 9:42Speaker 3: face of the league when Lebron goes, and he was like, well,
- 9:44Speaker 3: I don't want it.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you want it?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Kobe was starved for when Mike was leaving, and we
- 9:50Speaker 3: don't have that. So I think the problem is Lebron
- 9:53Speaker 3: is one of the guys. He's too close to the ground,
- 9:56Speaker 3: He's he doesn't demand that.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Or well, okay, I'm just gonna buck it up. I'm
- 10:02Speaker 8: gonna go back to the whole premise of the video.
- 10:04Speaker 8: First of all, there's an inherent problem between comparing hockey
- 10:08Speaker 8: and basketball, folks. I just feel like that's comparing apples
- 10:11Speaker 8: and oranges. The whole nature of hockey is physicality, it's
- 10:16Speaker 8: you know, it's trash talk, it's all the things that
- 10:18Speaker 8: the NBA has kind of weaned out of their game,
- 10:22Speaker 8: and rightly so, I mean the NBA in the NFL,
- 10:24Speaker 8: they they've kind of looked at their their their sports,
- 10:28Speaker 8: their sports or perspective sports as a business, and so
- 10:32Speaker 8: they've kind of toned down, you know, what they're allowing
- 10:36Speaker 8: their players to do. Compared to hockey and hockey those
- 10:39Speaker 8: players are probably of all the professional leagues, they're the
- 10:41Speaker 8: least paid, correct, And so who knows what their contracts
- 10:46Speaker 8: look like. Who knows, you know, it could be something
- 10:48Speaker 8: that they aren't. If they don't play, they don't they
- 10:50Speaker 8: don't get paid. Yeah, so who knows. I mean to me, though,
- 10:54Speaker 8: the whole idea of comparing hockey and basketball in any
- 10:59Speaker 8: way and are really it's kind of ludicrous.
- 11:01Speaker 4: But he's comparing effort. I don't think.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I'm with you because he didn't say anything about money, anything.
- 11:08Speaker 7: Anything about money.
- 11:10Speaker 8: But he did talk about Warriors and that you know,
- 11:12Speaker 8: the hockey players go out there and they're always playing.
- 11:14Speaker 7: You know, it's it's a different game, it's a different.
- 11:16Speaker 3: But I would I would argue that the NBA and
- 11:20Speaker 3: the NFL eradicating those issues out of the league.
- 11:23Speaker 4: It hurt the league. Did it hurt to watch it?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Because the NFL is not the same to watch all
- 11:28Speaker 3: those you know, the safety concerns as far as basketball, they've.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Taken all the physicality out of it.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And if we and if we box, if we box
- 11:36Speaker 3: in let's just say the All Star Game and you
- 11:41Speaker 3: there's no comparison. I mean, nobody particularly likes the NBA
- 11:46Speaker 3: All Star Game because there because because there's nothing. So
- 11:52Speaker 3: I think what's happening is you you've got you've got
- 11:56Speaker 3: a guy who's a hockey guy who if they're playing
- 11:59Speaker 3: the All Star Game.
- 12:00Speaker 4: If they're playing the game, they're just saying, anytime they
- 12:02Speaker 4: hit the ice.
- 12:03Speaker 3: What he's to me, what he's saying is anytime that
- 12:06Speaker 3: we hit the ice, we hit it with with all
- 12:10Speaker 3: our heart.
- 12:12Speaker 4: We're gonna give everything that we got to.
- 12:15Speaker 8: That didn't they play other countries though in there like
- 12:18Speaker 8: almost a world.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Yes, that's gonna take more heart.
- 12:21Speaker 8: That's gonna put a whole different attitude on the way
- 12:24Speaker 8: you play besides an intramural game.
- 12:26Speaker 3: True, But but you go back to Kobe, you go
- 12:31Speaker 3: back to Michael, and they were playing against you know,
- 12:35Speaker 3: they weren't playing against another country.
- 12:36Speaker 4: They were playing against guys that they were playing the league.
- 12:38Speaker 4: And they going off and.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Again were getting lost in the All Star Game. Forget
- 12:42Speaker 3: the All Star Game. I'm saying about that got His
- 12:45Speaker 3: comments were a direct shot and Lebron and the culture
- 12:48Speaker 3: of the NBA.
- 12:49Speaker 4: This is what that's about. Okay.
- 12:51Speaker 3: So okay, So tell me, tell me directly, are you
- 12:56Speaker 3: do you buy that?
- 12:57Speaker 4: I do buy it? Okay, if you look at the
- 12:59Speaker 4: current like I said, if you look at this current era,
- 13:02Speaker 4: it's just not like I said, it's.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Almost Yeah, the whole body playing, it's just not I
- 13:10Speaker 3: won't say not competitive, but it's not fierce. It's too friendly,
- 13:15Speaker 3: it's too homeboy, it's too like like I said, players,
- 13:19Speaker 3: some players like Paul George are more concerned about their
- 13:24Speaker 3: podcast than they are playing. We got a Joe LMB
- 13:28Speaker 3: who's about to make fifty sixty million dollars a year
- 13:31Speaker 3: and you're just not playing.
- 13:33Speaker 4: We got Yo.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Yokic, not Yokis, but Luka Donna's who got traded in
- 13:40Speaker 3: the prime of his career, and what they were able
- 13:43Speaker 3: to say about him, whether it's true or not.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Man, you don't take care of yourself, not in shape.
- 13:48Speaker 3: How can you say that about a premier play That
- 13:50Speaker 3: would never be the question about a premier player, And
- 13:55Speaker 3: decades ago, and.
- 13:56Speaker 4: To your point, Okay, he seems okay now.
- 14:01Speaker 3: But it's a LA's different. You can't hide in LA. Well,
- 14:04Speaker 3: so so I'm just making the case. Okay, so now
- 14:08Speaker 3: you move him, So now he's playing. So maybe this
- 14:09Speaker 3: issue was you.
- 14:11Speaker 4: It could have been.
- 14:12Speaker 3: But the fact of the matters, you traded any for
- 14:13Speaker 3: nothing that I agree. So what I'm saying the overall
- 14:17Speaker 3: culture is that everybody if that expendable based on your
- 14:21Speaker 3: lack of grit. The problem is with the players and
- 14:25Speaker 3: the problems with the culture of the.
- 14:27Speaker 8: Players and the fans are buying into what Hollis is saying.
- 14:30Speaker 8: Did you want some of the comments on this video,
- 14:33Speaker 8: I mean some of the comments. I mean I always
- 14:34Speaker 8: like to read the comments to see what people are,
- 14:36Speaker 8: what their vibe is over the whole thing. And some
- 14:38Speaker 8: of them were like, the NBA is the worst major sport.
- 14:41Speaker 8: Their players don't care. Players love money, not the sport.
- 14:45Speaker 8: It's one of the you know, talking and then also
- 14:47Speaker 8: the interest in the hockey. I mean, people were like
- 14:50Speaker 8: promoting it, like saying they've got a new fan in me,
- 14:53Speaker 8: you know. But to me, I'm gonna throw this out there,
- 14:56Speaker 8: Like I said, the NBA All Star game is more
- 14:58Speaker 8: of an intramural game.
- 14:59Speaker 7: I mean, sorry, you're.
- 15:00Speaker 8: Gonna get more fired up, especially and I'm gonna throw
- 15:03Speaker 8: this out there. I'm not going to go there, but
- 15:04Speaker 8: I am gonna kind of kind of, you know, kind
- 15:06Speaker 8: of throw a little bit of indication there in our
- 15:09Speaker 8: political comment right now. The USA playing Canada was a
- 15:13Speaker 8: big deal. Okay, we know there's been.
- 15:15Speaker 7: Things going on, and so.
- 15:17Speaker 8: That that caused a little more interest in the hockey
- 15:20Speaker 8: game than normal. And then once people watched it, they
- 15:24Speaker 8: see the you know, then the physicality of it. Like
- 15:26Speaker 8: you said, you know, they're they're they're into it. They've
- 15:28Speaker 8: got that warrior spirit and so you know, they may
- 15:33Speaker 8: gain some more fans from this. But I think, like
- 15:35Speaker 8: you said, Hollis and and and Carl NBA has some
- 15:38Speaker 8: issues they they I think I've said this before, you
- 15:41Speaker 8: can't manufacture soul.
- 15:43Speaker 7: They just go out there and they just a lot
- 15:46Speaker 7: of times go through the motions. They're they're out there
- 15:48Speaker 7: to collect a check.
- 15:48Speaker 8: They don't they don't act like they care, you know,
- 15:51Speaker 8: until the playoffs now that that's when they start to
- 15:53Speaker 8: pick up their pace. But regular season, I think we've
- 15:56Speaker 8: all said this before. I could care less if I
- 15:58Speaker 8: watch a game. I mean, I may watch pieces here there,
- 16:00Speaker 8: but I'm not gonna sit for a full four quarters
- 16:02Speaker 8: because you know, it's just it's the same thing over and.
- 16:05Speaker 6: Over, like you said.
- 16:06Speaker 3: And the fact of the matter is is like again,
- 16:08Speaker 3: because the heads of the NBA Adam Silver. What they
- 16:13Speaker 3: try to do is they want to tinker it to death.
- 16:16Speaker 3: You cannot, like you said, you cannot tinker effort. It
- 16:19Speaker 3: doesn't matter what you do. If you're not gonna put
- 16:21Speaker 3: out the effort, if you're not gonna go out there,
- 16:23Speaker 3: if you're not gonna play hard, why should I care
- 16:27Speaker 3: if the play is sloppy. It's it's like I said,
- 16:29Speaker 3: it's not fun to watch. That's why again, I know
- 16:32Speaker 3: the women game is still growing, but I think there's
- 16:35Speaker 3: a greater appreciation for it because you have so much
- 16:39Speaker 3: effort and so much dog out there. It's just funner
- 16:42Speaker 3: to like watch energytically, if you come from watching basketball
- 16:45Speaker 3: in a certain era.
- 16:48Speaker 4: I'm one with you on that.
- 16:50Speaker 3: And one of the things that I try to I
- 16:53Speaker 3: try to if I'm gonna watch a basketball game, one
- 16:57Speaker 3: of the things that I want to see I want
- 17:00Speaker 3: to see the physicality. I want to see the effort
- 17:03Speaker 3: because when you're when you're going all out, I mean,
- 17:08Speaker 3: you know you're gonna take a charge, You're gonna push
- 17:10Speaker 3: a guy. You know what I'm saying, because because it
- 17:12Speaker 3: matters if you win, it matters, if you get that shot,
- 17:15Speaker 3: it matters if you get that rebound. You know what
- 17:17Speaker 3: I'm saying. And I don't and you and to your point, Hollis,
- 17:21Speaker 3: you don't see that. And I think the visual piece
- 17:25Speaker 3: of what what we see is is a turnoff altogether.
- 17:32Speaker 3: And the problem is we can't. I don't know how
- 17:39Speaker 3: you fix it.
- 17:41Speaker 4: I know how you fix it. Give me, please tell
- 17:45Speaker 4: I don't think you fix it. Number one.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I don't think you fix it like starting at the NBA.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I think you you fix it starting at the youth level.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I think that number one. In the NBA's goal to expand,
- 17:58Speaker 3: to become a world game, it's become a worst game.
- 18:02Speaker 4: We are not the euro League right right.
- 18:05Speaker 3: You have to play American style basketball and that has
- 18:09Speaker 3: to be promoted. So I think to your point, least
- 18:12Speaker 3: some of those some of the contact and physicality has
- 18:15Speaker 3: got to come back in the game. I think we
- 18:18Speaker 3: have to play position basketball. And I think you have
- 18:21Speaker 3: to teach the game far as just like what the
- 18:24Speaker 3: NFL has done where they like tinker down and they
- 18:27Speaker 3: have all the NFL initiative as far as youth sports
- 18:30Speaker 3: coming all the way up. That's the same thing the
- 18:33Speaker 3: NBA has to do, and they have to emphasize American
- 18:36Speaker 3: style basketball and not what we're seeing now.
- 18:38Speaker 4: All right, well, I sent another I sent another video.
- 18:44Speaker 3: So to your point of where we need to fix it, yea,
- 18:48Speaker 3: let's listen to this and see where we go.
- 18:51Speaker 9: But if we were more honest with young people like
- 18:54Speaker 9: this and told them the truth like that, we need
- 18:56Speaker 9: to be in a lot better spot in society than
- 18:59Speaker 9: we are right now, because all we tell young people
- 19:01Speaker 9: now is it's okay, oh it got tough, it's okay
- 19:04Speaker 9: to quit, or you're right, you're oppressed, like you're not
- 19:07Speaker 9: having success and it's not your fault. If we just
- 19:10Speaker 9: regardless of what you look like, where you're from, whatever,
- 19:13Speaker 9: if we could have that type of mindset of life
- 19:16Speaker 9: is hard. When life gets hard and life gets tough,
- 19:19Speaker 9: that's when you find out how tough you are.
- 19:22Speaker 6: And that's in reference to the Rick Patino halftime speech.
- 19:25Speaker 8: Correct, yes, yes, they couldn't play that one would they
- 19:29Speaker 8: would have to edit it so much.
- 19:31Speaker 3: That I mean so to your point, and at the
- 19:36Speaker 3: younger levels all the way, they don't get the example
- 19:42Speaker 3: at the pro level. So what does college look like?
- 19:45Speaker 3: You don't get the example at the college level. What's
- 19:47Speaker 3: high school look like? Then what you bring in is
- 19:50Speaker 3: you bring you level where a lot of parents think
- 19:54Speaker 3: that their kid is is great, can't wait till he
- 19:56Speaker 3: gets to high school or middle school, and then by
- 19:59Speaker 3: the t time they get to high school, they might
- 20:01Speaker 3: not even be playing, and or they don't know how
- 20:04Speaker 3: to work. They don't there's so many kids, I think
- 20:07Speaker 3: in our in the Canal Valley, I think that there
- 20:10Speaker 3: are so many young kids who have has the foundation,
- 20:16Speaker 3: has some roots of being able to.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Be a really good player.
- 20:21Speaker 3: But I think that they just don't know how to
- 20:23Speaker 3: get there and they end up finding themselves mad at
- 20:29Speaker 3: because the coach put them on the bench because they
- 20:31Speaker 3: didn't do this.
- 20:32Speaker 4: You know, they're crying.
- 20:33Speaker 3: You know you talk about the youth, I mean we
- 20:35Speaker 3: got kids crying because they got mad because they missed
- 20:39Speaker 3: a shot.
- 20:40Speaker 4: You know, we're losing game, ain't even over.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I mean, just like all of that kind of stuff
- 20:46Speaker 3: that can you imagine crying to your to a coach
- 20:51Speaker 3: coming off. I think here's the issue, right when we
- 20:54Speaker 3: talk about that, we don't have a coacher now where
- 20:57Speaker 3: you take your kid to practice, drop them off, and
- 20:59Speaker 3: then come back and get them when it's over. We're
- 21:02Speaker 3: not allowing coaches just to coach, right. We are hovering, helicoptering,
- 21:08Speaker 3: and we're not that coach just can't coach right because
- 21:12Speaker 3: he has to coach kids, he has to kind of
- 21:15Speaker 3: a low key coach to parents, he has to coach
- 21:17Speaker 3: the crowd he had let coach him or her has
- 21:20Speaker 3: to do too much, and they just can't coach, and
- 21:22Speaker 3: they can't coach in a manner that's just going to
- 21:25Speaker 3: be raw and honest and again raw, honest.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Again.
- 21:28Speaker 3: We want to be uh, we want to be nice,
- 21:31Speaker 3: but we want to be kind but not nice, right.
- 21:34Speaker 3: We want to just be able to as a coach
- 21:36Speaker 3: just express how it is and be able to teach
- 21:39Speaker 3: you from there. But coaches can't do that anymore. And
- 21:42Speaker 3: then then some of the coaches they haven't took the
- 21:45Speaker 3: time to really learn their craft, right. So I think
- 21:49Speaker 3: the problem is with the coaching and as a like
- 21:53Speaker 3: a sort of an auxiliary problem is parents not allowing
- 21:56Speaker 3: coaches just to coach, and nobody can take honor conversations anymore.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Only only thing I'm gonna I'm gonna question that you
- 22:06Speaker 3: said is you know, because I'm sure there's a coach
- 22:10Speaker 3: that don't that can't coach or doesn't know how to coach,
- 22:13Speaker 3: or don't know how to coach all the details of
- 22:15Speaker 3: a position or period.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Right, Okay, But I.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Think, you know, I think everybody thinks that maybe because
- 22:26Speaker 3: I don't think it's always the coach. And I know
- 22:29Speaker 3: I'm not saying that you said that, but I think
- 22:32Speaker 3: if I tell you to do this and you got
- 22:36Speaker 3: a problem with doing that, you ain't coachable anyway. That's
- 22:40Speaker 3: not necessarily true. That's not necessarily true because what I'm
- 22:44Speaker 3: saying as a coach, there's a psychology element. That's what
- 22:46Speaker 3: I'm saying you as a coach. That can't just be
- 22:49Speaker 3: the solution. There's a psychology to coaching.
- 22:53Speaker 4: So you you got a number one know the kids, Hey.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Let me ask you this,
- 22:58Speaker 3: Let me ask you this. So in your position, whoever
- 23:04Speaker 3: is above you and he says do this, you may
- 23:09Speaker 3: have the ability to say, well, do you want me
- 23:11Speaker 3: to do it this way, this way, this way, that way,
- 23:13Speaker 3: that way, whatever.
- 23:14Speaker 4: But but but you're gonna do it.
- 23:16Speaker 3: So but if you don't have no question about what
- 23:19Speaker 3: he said, you're gonna likely do what do what they say? Yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 3: but you can't compare yes, because you can't compare an
- 23:27Speaker 3: adult to a child. A child don't have that level
- 23:30Speaker 3: of understanding. So what I'm saying, and there you have.
- 23:32Speaker 4: It when you grew up, when you came through football.
- 23:35Speaker 3: No, I'm telling you why I had it, because there
- 23:37Speaker 3: was consequences to it. That coach could, darn there whip
- 23:41Speaker 3: me at VARs, being a like a in a small kid.
- 23:44Speaker 3: It was the different consequences that you had to deal
- 23:47Speaker 3: with that you don't have to deal with now because
- 23:49Speaker 3: you know that coach he ain't gonna cush you, she
- 23:50Speaker 3: or he can't really cuts you out.
- 23:52Speaker 4: They ain't.
- 23:52Speaker 3: They definitely ain't putting their hands on you. So it's
- 23:54Speaker 3: no consequences out. Well, that's what I'm saying.
- 23:57Speaker 4: When that when your mom and dad dropped you off
- 23:59Speaker 4: of that field or the base down on a basketball court,
- 24:01Speaker 4: that was your de facto parent.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Absolutely, you know what I'm saying, And a lot of
- 24:05Speaker 3: those coaches were teachers, so not only did they have
- 24:08Speaker 3: a knowledge base of whatever sport they were doing, they
- 24:11Speaker 3: understood how to teach, like I gotta.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Teach this one that way.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I got to do it that way, and it's little
- 24:16Speaker 3: things that I could do to get my point across
- 24:18Speaker 3: to him, herd, or them. So I think again, just
- 24:21Speaker 3: the culture of how they are able or what they're
- 24:24Speaker 3: not really able to do as far as instruction wise,
- 24:27Speaker 3: has changed, and it's the job has almost become impossible. Well,
- 24:30Speaker 3: Rick Bettino, NBA NCAA Championship coach is coaching effort during
- 24:38Speaker 3: the halftime of a game at a Division one basketball program.
- 24:43Speaker 3: He's literally coaching effort. Yes, that should tell you everything
- 24:48Speaker 3: you need to know right there.
- 24:51Speaker 7: I'm gonna put this out there.
- 24:52Speaker 8: I do agree with the fact that coaches need to
- 24:54Speaker 8: be knowledgeable about the game. They need to understand how
- 24:58Speaker 8: to coach the kids. I think the main thing that
- 25:01Speaker 8: they need to make though, is a connection. If those
- 25:03Speaker 8: kids don't feel like that coach has their best interests
- 25:06Speaker 8: at heart and cares about them, it doesn't matter what
- 25:09Speaker 8: the coach does. It doesn't matter what the coach teaches.
- 25:11Speaker 8: They have to make that that that literal connection with
- 25:15Speaker 8: the kid and the trust factor.
- 25:18Speaker 3: But what does that connection look like though, Well, because
- 25:21Speaker 3: the coach cussed me out, I guess that was a connection.
- 25:24Speaker 4: I don't know, because what connection.
- 25:28Speaker 8: Kids and teams are different, right, And in society today,
- 25:31Speaker 8: I mean, sports is just a reflection of society. And
- 25:34Speaker 8: so when you look at outside of the sports boundaries,
- 25:37Speaker 8: that's society today. I mean, people don't take criticism. Well,
- 25:43Speaker 8: it's a it's a self I don't know.
- 25:45Speaker 7: I don't want to say self.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Absorbed, self loathing problems.
- 25:48Speaker 7: Well, self loathing is a good way to put it.
- 25:50Speaker 8: But I just feel like the coaches have to understand
- 25:55Speaker 8: their players, and the players are all going to be
- 25:57Speaker 8: different team to team, year to year.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, So.
- 26:02Speaker 3: I have the luxury of being able to have both
- 26:06Speaker 3: of those types somewhat both of those types of coaches
- 26:10Speaker 3: at Marshall and in Minnesota, I had Bob Prewit and
- 26:15Speaker 3: Sonny Randall. Sonny Randall's gonna yell and cuss you all
- 26:20Speaker 3: day long, grab your face mask, pull you to him
- 26:24Speaker 3: and cuss you out, and you gonna take it, or
- 26:27Speaker 3: you ain't gonna play all right, coach prewit is gonna
- 26:31Speaker 3: laugh and joke.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Now.
- 26:33Speaker 3: He's gonna get you ready. He's got all the knowledge
- 26:35Speaker 3: to get you ready. As we've all seen Bud Grant.
- 26:39Speaker 3: He ain't talking to you. He ain't gonna like walk
- 26:41Speaker 3: by and say, hey, Hollers, how you doing. You're doing
- 26:43Speaker 3: all right, you know, but he ain't gonna give you
- 26:45Speaker 3: none of that. He'll walk right by you fifty times
- 26:47Speaker 3: in practice. Do something wrong. Now I go back over
- 26:53Speaker 3: and I got Pete Carroll who's cracking jokes and and
- 26:56Speaker 3: all of that kind of stuff. The issue you isn't
- 27:00Speaker 3: really the coach. In my mind, I'm not thinking that
- 27:04Speaker 3: it's the coach. It is you, as the athlete who
- 27:07Speaker 3: have to adjust to what the system is. You're saying,
- 27:11Speaker 3: Hollis is shaking his head. But here's here's the thing.
- 27:13Speaker 3: But here's the thing. When you when you take when
- 27:15Speaker 3: you take it, and you say, well, sports is a
- 27:18Speaker 3: good example of work.
- 27:21Speaker 4: You when you're told by your boss what to do.
- 27:25Speaker 3: You may not like what you do, but you got
- 27:27Speaker 3: to do it regardless of it, and when and where
- 27:31Speaker 3: and how do we get that? Because what is what's
- 27:34Speaker 3: supposed to be? What is supposed to what is sports?
- 27:36Speaker 3: Because sports is not about winning championships. It's not about
- 27:39Speaker 3: me in an all proach, not being about all states,
- 27:41Speaker 3: it's not being it's not none of that. Okay, that's
- 27:44Speaker 3: none of the lessons that you get. The question is
- 27:48Speaker 3: whatever you get out of it has to be something
- 27:51Speaker 3: that's gonna impact you going toward going forward in life.
- 27:56Speaker 3: And to me, it is understanding of take making, harsh criticism,
- 28:02Speaker 3: taking advice, getting in trouble, all those kind of.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Things when you do wrong. When you you you can't
- 28:09Speaker 4: keep coming late.
- 28:10Speaker 3: But the thing is you can't take your antadotical experience
- 28:14Speaker 3: of how you were because it didn't matter who the
- 28:16Speaker 3: coach was. When I said, but I gotta get you,
- 28:20Speaker 3: I gotta get you, no, because it's not I'm not
- 28:22Speaker 3: talking about me. I'm talking about the structure how it
- 28:25Speaker 3: has to be. But I'm telling you I know I
- 28:27Speaker 3: went through it. But what I'm saying, though, it's like
- 28:30Speaker 3: it doesn't for you. It didn't matter who the coach
- 28:32Speaker 3: was because you had something a goal locked in your
- 28:34Speaker 3: head when you was a kid and nothing was going
- 28:37Speaker 3: to stop you. So for any type of coaching, it
- 28:40Speaker 3: didn't matter. It didn't matter if it was a smooth
- 28:43Speaker 3: game or harsh. But I'm saying for the kid who's
- 28:46Speaker 3: out there who's kind of just their plan, don't really
- 28:49Speaker 3: have a goal what they want to do, you have
- 28:52Speaker 3: to coach that that kid different and as a coach,
- 28:55Speaker 3: you have to be allowed to coach. I need to
- 28:57Speaker 3: cuss you out, I need to hug you, I need
- 28:59Speaker 3: to do this. And I'm saying now, is that we
- 29:02Speaker 3: because we came up in a different era where coaches
- 29:04Speaker 3: can do that.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Coaches can't do that now.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Coaches literally cannot coach the sport that they are an
- 29:11Speaker 3: expert in quote unquote it is. It is clear why
- 29:13Speaker 3: I was unsuccessful and why I got out of it
- 29:16Speaker 3: because I'm coaching a team now, I can take you
- 29:21Speaker 3: and sit you down and have a conversation. Right even
- 29:25Speaker 3: when I was at State, I'm okay with sitting down
- 29:28Speaker 3: and telling and explaining to you what you have, what
- 29:30Speaker 3: you don't have, what you need to be doing to
- 29:32Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. But when it comes down
- 29:36Speaker 3: to you doing something that that's out of why row
- 29:41Speaker 3: I'm cussing you out.
- 29:42Speaker 4: I ain't.
- 29:43Speaker 3: I ain't gonna I'm not I'm not gonna you do
- 29:46Speaker 3: something and it doesn't really matter what your goal is.
- 29:52Speaker 3: It's it's it's the life lessons that we're missing. See,
- 29:55Speaker 3: it's unfair to say to me that it's because I
- 30:00Speaker 3: had a goal to get somewhere, I had some coaching.
- 30:02Speaker 4: No, it is not.
- 30:05Speaker 3: I had coaches that I'll make the case that most
- 30:08Speaker 3: people could not could not, could not. You can deal
- 30:11Speaker 3: with them because you had a go set, so it
- 30:13Speaker 3: didn't matter who was no front me.
- 30:14Speaker 4: I went through them because I had a mom who
- 30:16Speaker 4: gave me an example.
- 30:18Speaker 3: I had a dad right who who coaches What happens
- 30:24Speaker 3: when you That's what I'm saying as a coach. As
- 30:26Speaker 3: a coach, I have to coach that player, and I
- 30:30Speaker 3: can't just think about the team, or I can't think
- 30:32Speaker 3: about just holistically. I mean, I have to think about
- 30:34Speaker 3: that and obviously consider all that, but I still have
- 30:36Speaker 3: to coach each individual player, and I have to coach
- 30:39Speaker 3: that player a little differently one to one to get
- 30:43Speaker 3: maybe the best. And not only do I have to
- 30:44Speaker 3: coach them, but I have to figure like I said,
- 30:46Speaker 3: it's a psychology to figure out how I can get
- 30:48Speaker 3: the best out of these players.
- 30:51Speaker 8: And I'll go a step Further, I think these coaches,
- 30:54Speaker 8: the successful coaches at every level of any sport, have charisma,
- 30:58Speaker 8: They have that intent.
- 31:00Speaker 4: That's a fair you know.
- 31:01Speaker 7: I mean, if there's just.
- 31:02Speaker 8: Something about those people, those coaches that the players they're
- 31:05Speaker 8: attracted to it it's it's a type of energy.
- 31:08Speaker 3: I think they're they're I think they're attracted to the
- 31:11Speaker 3: actual wins and losses that that.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Will put up even before they get there.
- 31:15Speaker 3: But hold your hold your thought holiday, Let's take a

- 33:00Speaker 6: Oh no, no, just what I said before it's in.
- 33:02Speaker 8: You know, the these successful coaches at regardless of what
- 33:06Speaker 8: level and what sport. They have an intangible and that
- 33:08Speaker 8: is charisma. And I know you mentioned something about, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 8: the wins and losses help, you know, make that charisma.
- 33:15Speaker 8: I think it has to be there from the start.
- 33:17Speaker 8: I think the wins and losses follow the charisma because
- 33:20Speaker 8: they motivate those players. They find ways to get to
- 33:23Speaker 8: those players to bring out their best regardless of where
- 33:26Speaker 8: they are.
- 33:27Speaker 7: Look at Rick.
- 33:27Speaker 8: Patino what he's done at Saint John's this year. I
- 33:30Speaker 8: mean that team is like twenty four and four. Yeah,
- 33:33Speaker 8: and last year I don't even think they made the tournament.
- 33:34Speaker 8: I mean they're expected to possibly win it. And that's
- 33:37Speaker 8: where he's went everywhere he goes. So there's a perfect
- 33:40Speaker 8: example of what I'm talking about. I feel like there's
- 33:42Speaker 8: just some some people that are just they have naturally
- 33:46Speaker 8: had that that spirit about them, that attraction that people
- 33:49Speaker 8: respect and want to to do what they say.
- 33:52Speaker 3: And to be a good coach, you have to win.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Like I don't, I agree, you have to win. Agree
- 33:57Speaker 3: you cannot. It's like giving the job. Example, you can't
- 34:00Speaker 3: be you know, last place in whatever sales position and
- 34:03Speaker 3: expect people to follow you.
- 34:05Speaker 4: The coach. You have to win. That's part of the gear. Sure, right, and.
- 34:09Speaker 3: I and by that, but at there are there are
- 34:14Speaker 3: times when great coaches just don't have great players. And
- 34:21Speaker 3: when that happens, When that happens, you know, the question becomes, well,
- 34:26Speaker 3: now what you do? Now those coaches are even able
- 34:29Speaker 3: to get people to come in, they can draft people
- 34:34Speaker 3: that can play, they know what they need all of
- 34:37Speaker 3: So to that great coach, he or she has the
- 34:40Speaker 3: ability to to to rebuild right and get the best
- 34:45Speaker 3: out of what they have. And because they could be
- 34:49Speaker 3: five and five and maybe that's the best you got,
- 34:52Speaker 3: I think that and maybe to maybe maybe to two
- 34:55Speaker 3: and two and whatever, two and whatever, maybe it might
- 34:57Speaker 3: be the best you got. So I think a great
- 34:59Speaker 3: coach coaches are able to get the best, extract the
- 35:02Speaker 3: best out of whatever they have.
- 35:03Speaker 4: And I think and I think.
- 35:05Speaker 12: It's it's it's it's too easy to to point out
- 35:09Speaker 12: the coach and assume that's the reason, you know, because
- 35:14Speaker 12: a lot of times that's not the reason.
- 35:17Speaker 3: I would. I would just it's it's always the reason.
- 35:20Speaker 3: The coaching is the reason. Now again I'm not saying
- 35:23Speaker 3: there's this factors that don't affect that, Like I just said, parents,
- 35:26Speaker 3: particularly a youth in high school sports, they have just
- 35:30Speaker 3: killed it pretty much. But like I'm saying, as a coach,
- 35:33Speaker 3: you have to coach through it and you got to
- 35:35Speaker 3: figure out a way around it.
- 35:37Speaker 4: But but but that's not blame, that's that's work.
- 35:40Speaker 3: That's work they're putting. But at the end of the day,
- 35:44Speaker 3: everybody can see it. Everybody can see what what the
- 35:47Speaker 3: negativity is. They get it the coach. You're looking at
- 35:51Speaker 3: a coach who's out there doing all he can do
- 35:55Speaker 3: and you're not winning. You you you go by? Can
- 36:00Speaker 3: you you look at you? Look at you look at
- 36:01Speaker 3: South Charleston with with the wrestler. Okay, this just this
- 36:06Speaker 3: past season. All the kids, all the best kids have
- 36:11Speaker 3: already left.
- 36:12Speaker 4: All right, So all.
- 36:13Speaker 3: He's he's got young kids.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Okay, that's all he's got.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Those young kids may not have ever really had a
- 36:21Speaker 3: chance to be on the field. They may not be
- 36:24Speaker 3: the best, but the best that he's got. So he
- 36:28Speaker 3: has to put them on the field. And hope you
- 36:32Speaker 3: can't put that on him. What you put that on
- 36:35Speaker 3: is you put that on the political piece of this
- 36:39Speaker 3: that allows kids to go wherever they want, parents who
- 36:42Speaker 3: want to go where they want to go, they want
- 36:44Speaker 3: to take their kids where they want to go.
- 36:45Speaker 4: You got to convince them not to go.
- 36:47Speaker 3: So you no, no, no, no, there ain't no convincing. It's
- 36:51Speaker 3: on you. You're not you can you Okay, you can.
- 36:55Speaker 3: You can say that and and and and they'll be
- 36:58Speaker 3: and and I guarantee there's a whole host of people
- 37:01Speaker 3: buying into that.
- 37:02Speaker 4: You know, I'm saying it's on you.
- 37:03Speaker 3: I'm not saying again what I'm saying, I'm not saying
- 37:07Speaker 3: it's a big part of this in which you cannot control.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 37:11Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, whatever the record is,
- 37:14Speaker 3: whatever the I'm not challenging. What I'm saying is it's
- 37:17Speaker 3: on him. I'm I'm not challenging that. I'm not challenging
- 37:20Speaker 3: that coach is always going to take the blame. You
- 37:22Speaker 3: gotta have the shoulders to take the blame. But that
- 37:25Speaker 3: that does just make it the reality. I mean, I'm
- 37:27Speaker 3: not I'm not necessarily my question agreeing with that. As
- 37:30Speaker 3: I said, parents have made it very difficult for coach. Okay,
- 37:34Speaker 3: and and if you're making it difficult for me, then
- 37:37Speaker 3: then then I can make the case then at that
- 37:40Speaker 3: point you're making my job harder.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Yeah, but you. But that's that's the environment.
- 37:47Speaker 3: That's the environment that we So it's just like you
- 37:49Speaker 3: have to figure out a way to coach through.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I have listen, I have no and I have I
- 37:53Speaker 4: have said this forever.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I have no issue with my record at West Virginia
- 37:58Speaker 3: State none. I have no issue with my record at
- 38:01Speaker 3: West Virginia, I mean at South Trust and High School
- 38:04Speaker 3: at all.
- 38:05Speaker 4: None.
- 38:06Speaker 3: It don't it don't change who I am. It don't
- 38:08Speaker 3: make me feel like, oh God, I'm so bad. No,
- 38:10Speaker 3: we don't do any of that. But what I do
- 38:13Speaker 3: know in both of those situations that there was work
- 38:19Speaker 3: that had.
- 38:19Speaker 4: To be done, big work that had to be done big.
- 38:22Speaker 3: At State, at Stayed, I was willing to do it, okay,
- 38:26Speaker 3: and did it for a while. Okay, got the most
- 38:31Speaker 3: out of what I think I had, And I think
- 38:35Speaker 3: in my mind when I look at that, I don't
- 38:38Speaker 3: judge that on the wins.
- 38:40Speaker 4: I judge that on the men. Now high school whole
- 38:44Speaker 4: another story. Okay.
- 38:46Speaker 3: In one season, what I realized was parents couldn't see,
- 38:51Speaker 3: parents didn't want to see what the problem was. The
- 38:56Speaker 3: people in the bleachers, you know, or or Facebook and
- 39:00Speaker 3: all those kinds of places talking about you know, taking
- 39:03Speaker 3: my kid.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Fine, now don't take your kid.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Let me go because I don't want this, I don't
- 39:10Speaker 3: need this, and and and and and not because I
- 39:13Speaker 3: don't care about the kids, because that's what I do
- 39:15Speaker 3: every single day. The problem is is what you're what
- 39:20Speaker 3: you don't know? But you can't No, I can't. No,
- 39:24Speaker 3: I know, I'm I'm not putting the blame on them.
- 39:26Speaker 3: I'm saying sounds like no, no, no, no, I did not
- 39:29Speaker 3: say did I say, did not say? I take the loss?
- 39:32Speaker 3: I'm taking the loss.
- 39:34Speaker 8: Yeah, this this issue, it's just got so many layers, really,
- 39:37Speaker 8: and you could just keep digging and kept finding more.
- 39:40Speaker 8: But but I really feel like what you're saying about
- 39:43Speaker 8: the coach takes the blame.
- 39:44Speaker 7: I understand that to a degree.
- 39:47Speaker 8: At the other levels, the collegiate level, you know, beyond that,
- 39:50Speaker 8: the professional level. I think at the high school level,
- 39:53Speaker 8: that's only a piece of the pot because you've got
- 39:55Speaker 8: to look at in our just take for example, West Virginia.
- 39:59Speaker 8: When when a parent decides they want to take their
- 40:01Speaker 8: their student athlete to a different facility, they're not just
- 40:04Speaker 8: going to be looking at the coach. They're gonna be
- 40:06Speaker 8: looking at the actual facility, what kind of academic programs
- 40:10Speaker 8: are offered there, what kind of a socioeconomic you know,
- 40:15Speaker 8: what kind of people are they going to be interacting with.
- 40:18Speaker 8: All of those things play a factor as well in
- 40:20Speaker 8: the portal. So at the high school level, so I
- 40:23Speaker 8: feel like, once you you know, get it's really sticky,
- 40:27Speaker 8: and it's really tricky at the high school level because
- 40:29Speaker 8: I really don't feel like it's just about coaching. I
- 40:31Speaker 8: feel like there's so many other factors that play a part.
- 40:34Speaker 8: When a parent switches their kids from one place to another,
- 40:37Speaker 8: they may follow a coach, but more often than not,
- 40:40Speaker 8: they're looking at the whole picture, the whole program, and
- 40:43Speaker 8: what they're kids getting into, and.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Let me, let me, let me say this, and neither
- 40:50Speaker 3: one of you have to necessarily respond to this. But
- 40:56Speaker 3: to your point, coach back at South Charleston High School, Okay,
- 41:02Speaker 3: now his history says, I'm not I'm not going to
- 41:11Speaker 3: recruit kids from other places. Okay, he's gonna have to
- 41:15Speaker 3: do that at South Charleston. Okay, there's there's there's no
- 41:18Speaker 3: option for him to win. There's no way he's winning
- 41:21Speaker 3: with the with the group that's there. Now, they're just
- 41:24Speaker 3: too young, got got thrown into the into the system
- 41:28Speaker 3: because all the kids, all the older kids' best kids
- 41:32Speaker 3: all left. Okay, So now the bad thing about that
- 41:38Speaker 3: is he's going to bring some kids in. Some kids
- 41:41Speaker 3: are gonna want to come and play for him. Now
- 41:45Speaker 3: what happens is now the parent has to now look
- 41:49Speaker 3: at well, is somebody going to come in and be
- 41:51Speaker 3: the quarterback and my son's not gonna play. Is somebody
- 41:55Speaker 3: gonna come in to be a running back and my
- 41:56Speaker 3: kid's not gonna play. Somebody gonna be a linebacker and
- 41:59Speaker 3: my kid's not gonna play. Now the question is my kid.
- 42:03Speaker 4: Playing or winning? Are we gonna be? Okay?
- 42:08Speaker 3: When he starts to bring in other kids to win,
- 42:10Speaker 3: he's not gonna just he's not gonna feel this team
- 42:13Speaker 3: that's at South Charleston right now.
- 42:15Speaker 4: He will not.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Feel that team come August. With just those players, He's
- 42:22Speaker 3: gonna be likely gonna bring some Hurricane kids with them,
- 42:26Speaker 3: probably get some Capital kids to come because he's a
- 42:29Speaker 3: he's a coach that has has a has a record
- 42:32Speaker 3: of getting to the playoffs. He wins, he wins, so
- 42:35Speaker 3: he's going to be able to get kids to come
- 42:38Speaker 3: his way. Now, my question is if you're a parent
- 42:42Speaker 3: in your kids playing and all of a sudden he's
- 42:46Speaker 3: not playing, how you feeling. That's the reality of it now.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I think that's pure reality of Okay, that's the reality.
- 42:53Speaker 3: That don't mean how you feel, no again, but that's
- 42:55Speaker 3: the reality of it. I think you are at some
- 42:58Speaker 3: point you're realizing that that's coming if in fact, there
- 43:01Speaker 3: are other kids going to be coming in, And that's
- 43:03Speaker 3: the reality of it.
- 43:04Speaker 4: Now.
- 43:05Speaker 3: You have the option you can stay and fight and
- 43:08Speaker 3: try to get back on the field, or you can
- 43:09Speaker 3: go somewhere else where you think you can play. But
- 43:11Speaker 3: that's the reality of what's going on with high school
- 43:14Speaker 3: sports now. And I don't think anybody's under any disillusion
- 43:17Speaker 3: that that's probably gonna be. That's potentially a scenario that
- 43:20Speaker 3: could happen. So it's I don't it's not it's not
- 43:25Speaker 3: a problem per se. It is a situation that's going
- 43:27Speaker 3: to happen. Yeah, I mean, it's gonna that's what I'm saying.
- 43:30Speaker 8: And if if they want to build a culture of
- 43:32Speaker 8: you know, the boosters want to win, probably the kids
- 43:35Speaker 8: that they have, obviously are not the kids that they
- 43:38Speaker 8: need to field on a team to.
- 43:40Speaker 4: Be to make need additional development exactly one or the other,
- 43:44Speaker 4: so that.
- 43:45Speaker 3: You might not I mean, maybe you don't play this year,
- 43:46Speaker 3: maybe or you play sparently and you get on the
- 43:49Speaker 3: field next two years or whatever. My issue is for
- 43:51Speaker 3: the kid that's getting ready to it's going to be
- 43:53Speaker 3: a senior this year, and I know, I get it.
- 43:58Speaker 4: You gotta go in and you got to if.
- 44:00Speaker 3: You, if you, if you're going to start work harder,
- 44:05Speaker 3: and it might. And I just think, like that's the culture,
- 44:08Speaker 3: that's the psychology that now coaches have to deal with
- 44:11Speaker 3: and they have to deal with. Again, you have to
- 44:13Speaker 3: deal with the kids that are coming in. You got
- 44:15Speaker 3: to deal with the kids that were there, and you
- 44:17Speaker 3: have to deal with both sets of parents. But you
- 44:19Speaker 3: have to be prepared to deal with all that. And
- 44:20Speaker 3: again I'm not saying it's fair that you do, but
- 44:24Speaker 3: that's the reality of coaching now. So you're not just
- 44:26Speaker 3: dealing with the players. You have to deal with parents
- 44:29Speaker 3: on both sides of the arguments. You have to deal
- 44:31Speaker 3: with administration, you have to deal with it all. Do
- 44:32Speaker 3: you This is something I don't know. I honestly don't know.
- 44:36Speaker 3: And and so I'm speculating or I'm asking more so asking,
- 44:41Speaker 3: so what would make what would make a coach come
- 44:46Speaker 3: to you and say, hey, look.
- 44:48Speaker 4: Your son play quarterback.
- 44:51Speaker 3: He's he's not what we're going to be able to
- 44:54Speaker 3: need to do whatever whatever we think we're going to
- 44:57Speaker 3: try to do this season. I'm going to bring a
- 44:59Speaker 3: couple of back in from from different places. He's likely
- 45:03Speaker 3: going to be you know, probably you know, third on
- 45:05Speaker 3: the depth chart. And I just want you to know,
- 45:11Speaker 3: and I'm just saying that's if if you had, if
- 45:13Speaker 3: you were able to get that alert in advance, what
- 45:17Speaker 3: would you think?
- 45:18Speaker 4: How would you feel?
- 45:19Speaker 3: I mean, I thank you for your honesty. I mean
- 45:22Speaker 3: I would appreciate it. But I'll again, I know coach
- 45:24Speaker 3: talk and again that's not directly that amazed anybody, but
- 45:27Speaker 3: coach talk says, yeah, he's gonna be able to compete,
- 45:30Speaker 3: and we're not saying all the other stuff. Coach talk
- 45:33Speaker 3: is going to say, hey, he's gonna be able to compete.
- 45:35Speaker 3: We'll figure it out. Everybody's gonna compete. Yeah, that's what
- 45:38Speaker 3: coach talks. Yes, and when when when it? Let me
- 45:41Speaker 3: just give you a hint. If a coach tells you
- 45:44Speaker 3: that we're gonna we're gonna go out there and we're
- 45:47Speaker 3: gonna compete, and the best player is gonna play.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Your son's got in this ship or your daughter's got it, believe.
- 45:52Speaker 3: But I just think, like I said, I just think overall,
- 45:55Speaker 3: when you talk about coaching in this time and area,
- 45:58Speaker 3: coaching is very, very difficult. And if you're not willing to,
- 46:02Speaker 3: like I said, if you're not willing to learn what's
- 46:05Speaker 3: new far as you know, techniques and new office, new defense,
- 46:09Speaker 3: if you're not willing to adjust to the new psychology
- 46:12Speaker 3: that you have to have coaching, Like I said, parents,
- 46:16Speaker 3: players and men, everybody, you just you can't. It's no
- 46:20Speaker 3: way you can be successful in this era. And I
- 46:22Speaker 3: think that's probably a reason. Even if you look like
- 46:24Speaker 3: a Dion, he's been successful because he understands the psychology
- 46:27Speaker 3: of kids. But he's but he can't cross the line
- 46:30Speaker 3: to the NFL because he knows it's a different world.
- 46:33Speaker 4: It's a different world, and I wouldn't be able to
- 46:34Speaker 4: do what I do here. Okay, go ahead, Lisa, Oh.
- 46:36Speaker 8: No, I was just I was just gonna throw this
- 46:38Speaker 8: out there for conversation. Do you think Hurricane was aware
- 46:41Speaker 8: that this was a possibility. Do you think it was
- 46:43Speaker 8: something that he just when he realized the other coach
- 46:46Speaker 8: stepped down, was he unhappy there? I mean, there's just
- 46:49Speaker 8: so many questions I have, Like he you know, he's
- 46:52Speaker 8: going from a program that's pretty well established to a challenge.
- 46:56Speaker 8: Really and I'm just wondering, you know, what kind of
- 47:00Speaker 8: thoughts were going through his head when he decided to
- 47:03Speaker 8: make this move.
- 47:05Speaker 3: The heart I think I think the the his objective is.
- 47:11Speaker 4: To prove that he can do it.
- 47:15Speaker 3: He can do it. I think that's yes. I think
- 47:18Speaker 3: he feels like he can do he can do it.
- 47:20Speaker 3: He thinks that he can turn that program around and
- 47:23Speaker 3: and again.
- 47:24Speaker 6: And he does have deep roots there.
- 47:25Speaker 7: He was there a lot.
- 47:27Speaker 4: I think that's the part. I think his his roots
- 47:29Speaker 4: are there. He loves it.
- 47:31Speaker 3: And I think we've seen this with he called Coach Carpenter.
- 47:34Speaker 3: We've seen with Coach Carpenter coming back to Capitol. We
- 47:36Speaker 3: seen with the I think Walker he was at Concord,
- 47:40Speaker 3: he went back to Martinsburg. So I think if you're
- 47:42Speaker 3: part and gratiated into a community, you love that community,
- 47:45Speaker 3: you love.
- 47:46Speaker 4: The kids there.
- 47:47Speaker 3: He thought maybe the grass is greener, but maybe he's not.
- 47:50Speaker 3: You want to come back, So.
- 47:53Speaker 7: Could be many things.
- 47:56Speaker 4: I just I'm just for me, I'm just I'm just
- 48:01Speaker 4: confused with it.
- 48:02Speaker 3: That's that, That's really I mean, I can't really go
- 48:06Speaker 3: any further into it, but I'm just confused with it
- 48:09Speaker 3: because to me, I think that there were there were
- 48:12Speaker 3: people who were really bothered by you know, him leaving.
- 48:19Speaker 3: And the question for me is are they happy when
- 48:22Speaker 3: from coming back or some mad because you know.
- 48:27Speaker 4: You've got, you know, all of a sudden, my kids again.
- 48:32Speaker 7: Any other move.
- 48:33Speaker 4: But I think people want to win.
- 48:35Speaker 3: You go on thirty, want to winter?
- 48:43Speaker 4: How important would it be for your kid to play?
- 48:46Speaker 4: Are you? Babe? So you want what you want to
- 48:49Speaker 4: win and you want your kid to play.
- 48:52Speaker 3: It depends on what I'm saying, and I hear you
- 48:54Speaker 3: when you say that, but it depends on where my
- 48:57Speaker 3: kid is. If my kid has no aspiration going to college,
- 49:01Speaker 3: we didn't, we ain't going to We ain't thinking about that.
- 49:03Speaker 3: He just playing high school football and then after that
- 49:05Speaker 3: it's over. I want you to be on a playoff team.
- 49:08Speaker 3: I want you to experience win. I want you to
- 49:10Speaker 3: have fun. I want you to have those high school memories.
- 49:12Speaker 3: So when y'all you get back with your boys. You
- 49:14Speaker 3: can talk about the playoff games and y'all had this
- 49:16Speaker 3: big win and da da da da dah. Now, again,
- 49:18Speaker 3: if my kid is a is going to be a
- 49:21Speaker 3: collegiate athlete, he's he's he's going in that direction, then
- 49:25Speaker 3: there's a different thought process and conversation. Again, the wins
- 49:29Speaker 3: don't necessarily mean that he's going to go further or
- 49:31Speaker 3: anything like that. But are you going to put my
- 49:34Speaker 3: kid in the position where you're going to play and
- 49:36Speaker 3: get the best out of them so I can get
- 49:38Speaker 3: recruits and get tapes and we can go to the
- 49:39Speaker 3: next level.
- 49:40Speaker 4: So it depends on where your kids at. Well, okay,
- 49:45Speaker 4: and it could be a.
- 49:46Speaker 8: Good thing if your kids exposed to the challenges and
- 49:50Speaker 8: having to compete for a position, because they're going to
- 49:53Speaker 8: have to do it at the collegiate level anyway.
- 49:54Speaker 3: If they have those yes, because a lot of NFL
- 49:58Speaker 3: players they didn't. They didn't in high school. Now that's
- 50:00Speaker 3: not everybody's story. But if you're just a regular dude, man,
- 50:04Speaker 3: I want to win. If I'm just a regular dude
- 50:06Speaker 3: and this ain't going no further, and okay, so I'm
- 50:10Speaker 3: gonna as much as I criticize you on on on
- 50:15Speaker 3: the on the realization of my goals. I'll give you this,
- 50:22Speaker 3: I'm not willing. I'm not willing won I'm not willing
- 50:26Speaker 3: to let anybody get my job.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Like you know, my my coach, your recon.
- 50:35Speaker 3: So so in my mind, I'm I'm not thinking you know,
- 50:39Speaker 3: and and and my dad, my dad is not you know,
- 50:42Speaker 3: if I'm not playing, my dad is saying it's me.
- 50:45Speaker 3: He ain't saying it's the coach. He ain't talking about
- 50:48Speaker 3: the coach. My dad is going to say, you.
- 50:50Speaker 4: Know, because.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Different back when it was that, back when Daddy ball
- 50:58Speaker 3: was at its best, there was a gentleman who was
- 51:01Speaker 3: playing for me. Dad was a booster at the high school.
- 51:04Speaker 3: He makes he makes varsity. I don't make varsity, right,
- 51:09Speaker 3: So what Dad knew was in order to play, you
- 51:13Speaker 3: gotta make varsity.
- 51:14Speaker 4: So you gotta make varsity.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Then once you make varsity, you gotta get in the lineup,
- 51:18Speaker 3: especially if you think I'm coming to a game, right.
- 51:22Speaker 3: I tried to explain to him, like, you know, you know,
- 51:25Speaker 3: we didn't have no term like Daddy brought back then.
- 51:27Speaker 3: I'm like Dad, his dad is a booster. That's why
- 51:31Speaker 3: he made the team, and Dad said, well, I can
- 51:33Speaker 3: guarantee you this if you outplay him that much, I
- 51:37Speaker 3: don't think the coach will care how much money he
- 51:39Speaker 3: gives him.
- 51:40Speaker 4: He gonna keep you on the team instead of him.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Fact And in my mind, in my mind, that's how
- 51:45Speaker 3: I functioned the whole entire time, Like I just got
- 51:49Speaker 3: to outplay, out work before I can outplay.
- 51:53Speaker 4: I got out work you, and then I can outplay you,
- 51:56Speaker 4: so now I can get in issue though is and and.
- 52:03Speaker 3: Just to put a pin in that right quick, that
- 52:05Speaker 3: conversation that you just had with yourself and your father
- 52:10Speaker 3: is not happening exactly the level.
- 52:13Speaker 4: No more people are not having that conversation.
- 52:16Speaker 3: That's a totally different conversation than what even if elite
- 52:20Speaker 3: athletes are getting.
- 52:22Speaker 4: So what I'm trying to say is that.
- 52:25Speaker 3: A kid is just not coming to the field with
- 52:27Speaker 3: that sort of mindset in that conversation from the top
- 52:30Speaker 3: and the top is mom and Dad right, They're not
- 52:32Speaker 3: coming with that because again, think about what you just said.
- 52:35Speaker 3: Your dad ain't say our plane, your dad set out working.
- 52:38Speaker 3: That's a foundational route matter that starts before you even
- 52:42Speaker 3: strap up the chin, strapping the helmet and put going
- 52:44Speaker 3: on the field. And a lot of kids, I would
- 52:47Speaker 3: say most kids, at least, unless they have it in them,
- 52:51Speaker 3: they're not getting that conversation. Bro, I'm I'm up and
- 52:56Speaker 3: home before dad leaves to go to work, just so
- 53:00Speaker 3: he knows I was out the rug.
- 53:01Speaker 4: That's what I'm say. That's the thing.
- 53:04Speaker 8: And again, you had some natural, God given gifts, but
- 53:07Speaker 8: then after that you had to you had to work
- 53:09Speaker 8: to develop that.
- 53:10Speaker 3: Absolutely, you had somebody telling you that. Yes, you had
- 53:13Speaker 3: somebody saying like, this is what you're doing. And it
- 53:16Speaker 3: was an ex it was actually an expectation. He really
- 53:20Speaker 3: say get up, Like he wasn't waking me up. He
- 53:23Speaker 3: wasn't going to ask me. He wasn't going to ask
- 53:26Speaker 3: me why you didn't run to day. He wasn't none
- 53:28Speaker 3: of that.
- 53:30Speaker 4: But what we knew was where the gold was. And
- 53:33Speaker 4: that's what I'm saying.
- 53:33Speaker 3: And when you look at particularly when you're talking about followers,
- 53:37Speaker 3: when you look at Richard Williams, we look at LeVar
- 53:39Speaker 3: Ball when it's just not a mystery why their kids
- 53:43Speaker 3: are professional athletes and made it that far.
- 53:45Speaker 4: It ain't no mystery.
- 53:47Speaker 3: And what I'm just trying to say because they had
- 53:48Speaker 3: an expectation and they had a look look at yourself
- 53:52Speaker 3: first before you turn your eyes to anything else, and
- 53:55Speaker 3: deal with you first, and didn't.
- 53:56Speaker 4: Go out there right. And I'm just saying I was
- 53:59Speaker 4: thinking of Tiger Yeah, Tiger Woods. So parents, a lot
- 54:02Speaker 4: of parents just ain't doing that. They're looking at the coach.
- 54:05Speaker 3: They're looking at the facility system, the offense, the defense,
- 54:08Speaker 3: the coach. But so what I'm just saying is a
- 54:11Speaker 3: coach now. And that's why I'm putting it on the
- 54:14Speaker 3: coach man. You got it, man, It's it's just I
- 54:17Speaker 3: don't see how anybody would coach now. It's just such
- 54:20Speaker 3: a hard job and you gotta get ready for everything.
- 54:25Speaker 3: You gotta be prepared for that. So you may have
- 54:27Speaker 3: to be as a coach.
- 54:28Speaker 4: I may have to give you the daddy's speech, and
- 54:32Speaker 4: if you not prepared to do that as a coach,
- 54:34Speaker 4: you can't coach.
- 54:34Speaker 8: In this comment, can you imagine like coaches from back
- 54:37Speaker 8: in the day dealing with the transfer portal today, I
- 54:41Speaker 8: mean some of those coaches would have they wouldn't have
- 54:43Speaker 8: said a chance, Yeah, I mean it wouldn't have happened.
- 54:47Speaker 8: It just its just and some of probably some of
- 54:50Speaker 8: the greatest coaches of all time may not have been
- 54:53Speaker 8: in this atmosphere.
- 54:54Speaker 7: You think about that, for thought, I.
- 55:01Speaker 3: Could probably, I could probably take this another half hour easy,
- 55:06Speaker 3: but we've got to go. So ladies and gentlemen, we
- 55:09Speaker 3: appreciate you listening, and we will be back again next week.
