Latest / WCBH / AFL with Jono: Last-Second Draws & Thrilling Finishes
Transcript
- 0:17Joining us on the line from Geelong, Jono, last week was round eight in the AFL.
- 0:23There was a drawn match on the Thursday, 93 apiece between the Pies and the Hawks.
- 0:28Yeah, g'day Cam, great to speak to you once again.
- 0:31Yeah, 93 apiece, the Pies, well the Hawks had all the scoring opportunities
- 0:36throughout the night and probably should have had the gang done and dusted,
- 0:38but Collingwood gave away a free kick and they, you know, they kicked accurately
- 0:43and they were in front, but gave away a free kick on the siren.
- 0:46Dylan Morky's goal after the siren, we have a draw.
- 0:49The Dockers, 12-point winners over the Dogs? Yeah, they just did enough, the Dockers.
- 0:54The poor old Doggies, they've just got too many injuries to key players at present,
- 0:59which is threatening to derail their season at the moment.
- 1:02But, yeah, the Dockers look strong.
- 1:04And in the local derby, one-point the margin, the Crows, one-point winners over
- 1:08the power? Yeah, another cracking show-in game between these two sides.
- 1:12The only downside, Cam, is it wasn't the standalone game on the Friday night
- 1:16last week and the Crows key goal with, I think, 11 seconds to go.
- 1:20Braden Cook slotted one and they get up by a point in another cracker.
- 1:25As expected, the Lions' big winners over the Bombers, 143-79.
- 1:30Yeah, the Lions are just purring along nicely, aren't they?
- 1:33They are, and we tipped the Eagles in this one, but the Tigers 99,
- 1:37Eagles 88, 11 points to margin.
- 1:40And I was watching the score closely towards the end, Cam, and the Tigers kicked
- 1:43the last couple of goals of the game to snatch that one off the Eagles.
- 1:47But well done to the cellar dwellers, and the Tigers get their first win of the year.
- 1:51I think your question to me last week was, will Richmond actually win a game
- 1:55this season? And yes, yes, they have, Jono. I did, yes, correct. Correct.
- 2:00Your Cats 135, North Melbourne 86, 49 points to margin.
- 2:05Yeah, 49 points sort of flattered the Cats at the end. They took two and a half
- 2:09quarters to get going to actually look like Geelong, but credit to North.
- 2:12They really threw it up to the Cats for the best part of three quarters and
- 2:16Geelong just too strong in the end.
- 2:19And at Marvel Stadium, the Blues, they went down to the Saints 108 to 69.
- 2:24Yeah, and I'm still kicking myself on this one, Cam. I changed my tip to Carlton
- 2:28prior to the game, which I've done three times for Carlton this year,
- 2:31thinking they're going to win, and they keep throwing it back in my face, so never again.
- 2:36Don't you hate when you do that? You've locked your tips in,
- 2:39and then you might get a bit of information, or you think about it,
- 2:43or you look at the team list, then you go back and you make the change,
- 2:46and then you lose the tip, and you think, ah, if I had just left it. What was I thinking?
- 2:51And I never changed the tip for good. It always ends up evil. Yeah.
- 2:55Yeah, more times than not, when I change the tip, I end up getting it wrong.
- 2:59Swans 131, the Demons 114. Yeah, this was a great game.
- 3:03There wasn't a whole lot of defensive mechanisms about this one.
- 3:06It was very high scoring.
- 3:08And the Dees, they threw it up to the Swans.
- 3:10Swans got out to about five goal lead at one point, and the Dees kicked a couple
- 3:14late to bring it back. But they were never really out of it.
- 3:17And they're looking good, Melbourne, even though the Swans are looking better.
- 3:21All right. And the Suns, 20-point winners over GWS.
- 3:25Yeah, your sons getting themselves back on track, Cam. A nice victory there over the Giants.
- 3:30Still missing a few players, the Giants. They'll be better at the back end of the year, I suspect.
- 3:35Now, this will go to air on Saturday morning, but let's start with the Dockers
- 3:40versus the Hawks in round nine.
- 3:42Well, I'll already predict that this might be the match of the round on Thursday
- 3:45night. So the Dockers are sitting in second. The Hawks are third.
- 3:50As I'm hearing at the moment, there's a couple of question marks over some key players for the Hawks.
- 3:55So they might be down a couple, but it'll be a big task to beat the Dockers over there.
- 4:02And if they can do that, the Hawks, they're the real deal. But I'm going to
- 4:05have to stick with the Dockers at home.
- 4:07Yeah, I'm going to tip the Dockers at home. Lions, short-priced favourites against the Blues.
- 4:14Extremely short-priced favourites, and that's for a reason. I think the Lions
- 4:17will mop the floor with Carlton. Poor old Carlton, they can't take a trick.
- 4:21Yeah, so to put us down for the Lions there, power up against the dogs this
- 4:25one will be fairly evenly matched it's in adelaide yeah i agree cam you could
- 4:29just be a toss the coin on this one if the doggies had all their clientele available,
- 4:34you'd think they'd get over the top but the port adelaide side have beaten the
- 4:38cats they went down to adelaide by a point in the last couple of weeks and they're
- 4:42looking all right i think i might stick with them at home.
- 4:46Yeah, I'm going to go the dogs away there. Saturday, we see North up against
- 4:50the Swans, just put the Swans top of the table.
- 4:53Swans are top of the table, and top of the table for a reason.
- 4:55They are playing some sensational, fast, easy-watching footy at present.
- 5:01And even with their key recruit, Charlie Curnow, not kicking bags of goals,
- 5:06he's doing enough to unsettle the defensive lines of the opposition and allowing
- 5:10his teammates to come in and get the job done.
- 5:13North, they're improving, we know that, but they're just going to be no match
- 5:16for the Swans, not over four quarters, and I suspect a similar result to what
- 5:20happened to the Cats against the Cats last week.
- 5:23Yeah, put me down for the red and the white. Okay, GWS take on the Bombers,
- 5:27and that's happening in Sydney?
- 5:29Yeah, and hopefully the Giants start getting a few of these players back and
- 5:33they show the form that we know they're capable of playing.
- 5:36The Bombers, again, they can't take a trick, and yeah, I suspect the Giants
- 5:41should get this one done comfortably at home. Yeah, I'm going to tip GWS your
- 5:45tip for the Premiership for last season.
- 5:48And Gold Coast Suns up against St Kilda. Now, we might spend a little bit of time on this one.
- 5:53This is the game taking place at TIO Stadium. This is the fifth year of the
- 5:59deal for the Suns to play two games in the Territory a season.
- 6:03So, they've played eight so far.
- 6:05They're eight from eight. This will be their ninth game.
- 6:08Can the Suns make it nine from nine, Jono?
- 6:12They will be nine for nine for sure, Cam. Your sons, they love it up at Darwin at TIO.
- 6:17And I don't think the Saints can match them. Well, we should call TIO their home grand now.
- 6:24And I think all sons supporters would love,
- 6:27the Gold Coast Suns to play more games at the home because it almost guarantees the four points.
- 6:32Yes, if it's the fifth and final year of the deal,
- 6:36let's hope the NT government and the Gold Coast Suns management can get together
- 6:40on the same page and extend that deal because it's been a great thing for the
- 6:44Suns and it's been a great thing for football in the top end.
- 6:47Your cat's up against the Magpies?
- 6:50Yes, I'm going along to this one Saturday night at the GCAM and I'm a little
- 6:55bit concerned about this one. The Pies, if they're at full strength,
- 6:59I think there's a few injury clouds.
- 7:00I know Scott Pendlebury will play and he'll equal the record this weekend.
- 7:08But I don't know. I think Darcy Cameron, the Ruckman's in doubt.
- 7:13Cats are missing a couple. I'm a bit concerned, but I'm going to have to tip my case.
- 7:17I'll be tipping you, Cats, but let's just unpack this Pendlebury record.
- 7:21This is for the most number of games ever. Is that right?
- 7:25Yes, correct. So he'll play. He didn't play against Hawthorne last week.
- 7:28He played Anzac Day and won the Anzac Day medal and had, excuse me,
- 7:33Cam, for the noise in the background. That's the garbage truck just going past.
- 7:37So he brained Essence on the MCG Anzac Day, won the medal, had a five-day break.
- 7:44He didn't play last week against Hawthorne.
- 7:46He'll play this week against the Cats.
- 7:48Then he'll have the following week off against Sydney, and the plan is then
- 7:53to break the record back at the MCG against West Coast, which is a Collingwood
- 7:57home game. So what's the record at the moment?
- 8:00Oh, now you're getting me. It's 430-something. And how old is he? Thirty-eight.
- 8:09Earth-gilt on ticking, doesn't he? Thirty-eight. I know I was having a conversation
- 8:13with a couple of my mates on Anzac Day and we were saying that,
- 8:17you know, you draft him now as a 38-year-old.
- 8:20That's how good he's going and he has been his whole career.
- 8:24Yeah, it's quite remarkable how well he's been able to go for so long and to
- 8:30have the body in such good nick.
- 8:32Okay, Demon's up against West Coast. This one's at Marvel?
- 8:36Yeah, Demons comfortable here, Cam. They're playing great footy,
- 8:39the Demons, which credit to Stephen King and the game style that he's adopted
- 8:43with them this year in a new role as the Melbourne coach.
- 8:47But they're playing a quick and exciting brand of footy. And when those two
- 8:51pickets get their hands on the ball, it's a game you want to watch.
- 8:55Certainly is. Cozzy is getting a lot of highlights on the reel at the moment.
- 8:59And so I'll be chipping the Ds in that one.
- 9:01And Tigers up against the Crows. Richmond, back-to-back winners?
- 9:05Richmond back-to-back winners and poor old Richmond. I feel sorry for them because
- 9:09they have got an extensive injury list this year and a lot of them too are to their young guns.
- 9:16So that's just pulling the handbrake up on their rebuild a fraction,
- 9:21missing out on all these players not being available.
- 9:25So if they were all available, they wouldn't be sitting 18th on the ladder, I wouldn't suspect.
- 9:30But in saying that can, the Crows should be too strong and get over them at the MCG.
- 9:35And the Tigers, they might be still patting each other on the back after last
- 9:38week's victory over West Coast.
- 9:41I'm going to back them in for two in a row. Look out. Yes, I like that.
- 9:45Jono, thanks for joining us and enjoy your Triumph at the G with the Cats and the Pies.
- 9:49Will do. The weather's totally changed here in the last week,
- 9:52Cam, so I'll be rugging up at the MCG Saturday night.
- 9:55Go Cats. Go Cats. It's game time.
