Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On May eighth, nineteen fifty five, NBC brought listeners the
- 0:03Speaker 1: third broadcast of X minus one. This Is Mars Is Heaven,
- 0:08Speaker 1: adapted for radio by Ernest Kinoy from a Ray Bradbury story,
- 0:12Speaker 1: with Wendell Holmes as Captain John Black and Peter Cappell
- 0:16Speaker 1: as Doctor Horst. It is April twentieth, nineteen eighty seven.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Black commands Earth's first manned rocket, the XR fifty three,
- 0:25Speaker 1: as it lands on Mars beyond the Mist. At the
- 0:28Speaker 1: landing site, Black, Horst and Lieutenant Lustig find an American
- 0:32Speaker 1: small town that appears fixed in the nineteen twenties, complete
- 0:36Speaker 1: with familiar sounds and objects. Their effort to reconcile that
- 0:41Speaker 1: discovery with their mission takes the expedition deeper into Bradbury's
- 0:45Speaker 1: Martian setting. We now take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Calm down, perplaster off X minus five minus four US
- 1:00Speaker 2: three minus two X minus.
- 1:03Speaker 3: One fire.
- 1:12Speaker 2: From the far horizons of the unknown come transcribe tales
- 1:15Speaker 2: of new dimensions in time and space. These are stories
- 1:20Speaker 2: of the future adventures in which you'll live in a million,
- 1:24Speaker 2: could be years, on a thousand, maybe worlds. The National
- 1:28Speaker 2: Broadcasting Company presents X minus one the Night's story, Mars
- 1:49Speaker 2: is Heaven. When the first space rocket lands on Mars.
- 2:07Speaker 3: What will we find only the.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Ruins of a dead and deserted planet, or will there
- 2:14Speaker 2: be life, intelligent life in some strange form that we
- 2:19Speaker 2: can only imagine. Will we be welcomed with open arms,
- 2:24Speaker 2: or will the Martians treat us as invaders? Only one
- 2:29Speaker 2: thing is certain. Someday a giant metalship will take off
- 2:35Speaker 2: from Earth to travel through the black velocities, the silent
- 2:39Speaker 2: ghats of space, to descend at last into the darkness
- 2:43Speaker 2: of the upper Martian atmospheres. And on that day man
- 2:49Speaker 2: will finally know the answers the day we first land
- 2:54Speaker 2: on Mars.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Now hear this, Now hear this? Approaching critical deceleration. Fashioned
- 3:12Speaker 4: gravity suits stand by the land.
- 3:16Speaker 5: There it is. We've intersected the course vector.
- 3:17Speaker 6: Sir.
- 3:18Speaker 5: All right, mister lustig over the manual control. I say, masters,
- 3:22Speaker 5: sound General Quarters, What do.
- 3:29Speaker 6: You make of the terrain? There needs to be a
- 3:31Speaker 6: heavy ground, miss Captain. We won't be able to use
- 3:33Speaker 6: the infra red lights and we'll have to come in
- 3:35Speaker 6: on radar.
- 3:36Speaker 7: There's not a little.
- 3:37Speaker 6: Risky, sir, landing in the dark.
- 3:39Speaker 5: I'd rather run the danger of a blind landing, Lieutenant,
- 3:41Speaker 5: and come in without the cover of darkness. Remember, we
- 3:44Speaker 5: don't know what kind of reception is waiting for us
- 3:46Speaker 5: down there.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Air speed five hundred altitude now four thousand.
- 3:54Speaker 5: Bridge to engine room, stand by for deceleration. Fire forward
- 3:58Speaker 5: tubes one and three.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Steady as you're going, mister lastic.
- 4:07Speaker 4: As she goes to speed one hundred altitude one thousand,
- 4:13Speaker 4: they don't ready to get the level stretch, get a headset,
- 4:16Speaker 4: skits down, gets kicked altitude five hundred four.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Three fifty three up a point now, all right, let's
- 4:30Speaker 5: shut her down. Cut the par master's high battle stations,
- 4:52Speaker 5: I said.
- 4:52Speaker 6: A security.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Well, gentlemen, gentlemen, we're now on Mars, April twentieth, nineteen
- 5:01Speaker 5: eighty seven, or thirty three Greenwich time ended.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Up in the log message.
- 5:06Speaker 5: I said, Well, gentlemen, it's less than two hours, will dawn.
- 5:10Speaker 6: As soon as it's light, we'll send out a landing party.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Masters, get me an all over HOOKUPAD set up.
- 5:25Speaker 6: I'll hear this.
- 5:28Speaker 5: All right, man, the smoking lamp is lit. Well, we're
- 5:33Speaker 5: on Mars. The first man shipped from Earth to land. Man,
- 5:38Speaker 5: we don't know what we're going to find or what
- 5:41Speaker 5: dangers we may face. We're seventeen men on an alien world,
- 5:46Speaker 5: and it's up to us whether we ever get home again.
- 5:49Speaker 5: The next few hours should tell the story. And I
- 5:53Speaker 5: want instant obedience to all commands. I'll court Marshall the
- 5:57Speaker 5: first man who doesn't come too when he's order.
- 6:00Speaker 6: And one other thing.
- 6:02Speaker 5: We may be on Mars, but this is still the
- 6:04Speaker 5: United States Naval Vesfort officers will conduct a personal and
- 6:08Speaker 5: weapons inspection in one hour.
- 6:10Speaker 6: That's all inspection, Captain.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Now, mister Lustig, we've got an hour and a half
- 6:18Speaker 5: to sweat out before we find out what's outside that airlock.
- 6:23Speaker 6: I'd rather have a man worried about.
- 6:24Speaker 5: His stripes about what's waiting outside on Mars.
- 6:42Speaker 8: Now I hear this landing body report the forward airlot.
- 6:46Speaker 8: Captain Black, Lieutenant Hinston, Lieutenant Lustig, and doctor Horse report
- 6:52Speaker 8: immediately the forward air lock.
- 6:55Speaker 6: He's now landing time minus five.
- 6:58Speaker 5: And paging us, Uh you ready duck to hoist?
- 7:02Speaker 7: Yes, mister Lastic, as ready as I will ever be.
- 7:05Speaker 6: Come on, let's get in the lock.
- 7:12Speaker 9: Ain's s Elastic and Horse reporting in the air luck.
- 7:15Speaker 7: Very well, so the captain will join you.
- 7:22Speaker 6: Four minutes to go.
- 7:23Speaker 5: At least the captain would get here. What difference does
- 7:26Speaker 5: it make?
- 7:26Speaker 6: I just want to get it over with, that's all.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Anybody got a cigarette?
- 7:30Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 7:31Speaker 5: I think you're smoking too much. Lieutenant Plastic? Are you
- 7:33Speaker 5: nervously off for your horse?
- 7:35Speaker 10: Wondering what's hidden outside underneath that ground?
- 7:38Speaker 6: Missed?
- 7:39Speaker 10: I've been giving it some thought to be very interesting
- 7:42Speaker 10: to find out a very unusual planet, Mars.
- 7:44Speaker 7: Why it has an atmosphere?
- 7:47Speaker 10: A wonderful thing in an atmosphere where you find one,
- 7:50Speaker 10: you find.
- 7:52Speaker 6: Life in Martians. What do you think they'll look like?
- 7:56Speaker 7: Who knows? Intelligent life can take many forms.
- 8:00Speaker 5: I mean they may have green skins and eyes on
- 8:02Speaker 5: stalks or something.
- 8:03Speaker 10: The comic book conception is possible, of course. Or they
- 8:07Speaker 10: may have developed beyond us. Perhaps they have a science
- 8:10Speaker 10: that can produce weapons far more dangerous than our atomic missiles.
- 8:14Speaker 6: You think we may have to fight our way.
- 8:16Speaker 7: Out, after all, we are invaders. I am this landing
- 8:23Speaker 7: time minus two?
- 8:25Speaker 6: All right? All right, we heard this, and I'd like
- 8:28Speaker 6: to find outside that air lock. Go Illinois? Ever been there?
- 8:33Speaker 6: Lasting homely Chicago?
- 8:35Speaker 11: You want to see my hometown green lawns, big white houses.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Sounds like my hometown. My grandmother used to have one
- 8:42Speaker 6: of those ion deer on the lawn. Every Halloween. We'd
- 8:44Speaker 6: paint another color.
- 8:45Speaker 5: One time we painted in black and white, like a
- 8:47Speaker 5: Hallstein cow. Where does your family live, doctor Houst, I.
- 8:49Speaker 7: Have no family.
- 8:51Speaker 10: When I was a child, they were guests of death
- 8:53Speaker 10: in the Daho concentration camp. Tough, No, it has its advantages.
- 8:57Speaker 10: I have no ties on Earth. Nothing to lose now
- 9:00Speaker 10: I met, and I'm the.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Only one on board who was free to enjoy our
- 9:02Speaker 5: present peculiar position. All right, Masters, you can button it
- 9:05Speaker 5: up now. Well, gentlemen, check your sidearms. In one minute,
- 9:14Speaker 5: will be the first men to set foot on Mars.
- 9:17Speaker 10: Quite an honor, right, as long as the metals are
- 9:19Speaker 10: not rewarded posthumously.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Still uneasy, doctor Hurst, Captain.
- 9:23Speaker 10: Black, I've been uneasy ever since I can remember, on
- 9:27Speaker 10: Earth and on Mars.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Well, thirty seconds. Give me the intercom phone listing. Yes
- 9:33Speaker 5: it Masters, battle stations. It'll be manned till we return.
- 9:38Speaker 5: If we're not back in two hours, I want no
- 9:41Speaker 5: rescue party sent out. Blast off and save the ship.
- 9:44Speaker 5: You understand, all right? Five seconds four three two one,
- 9:54Speaker 5: lusting open the outer air lock.
- 9:56Speaker 6: I say, it's fresh air. Let's go.
- 10:13Speaker 5: All right, now, take it easy. It's too dark to
- 10:16Speaker 5: move fast. Fire, isn't it not even a wind? Can't
- 10:24Speaker 5: see anything for miss Groundness. We're gonna what's out here?
- 10:28Speaker 6: All right? Come on? What the chaps and I can
- 10:32Speaker 6: swear it. That sounds like a rooster.
- 10:36Speaker 7: I don't hear it anymore.
- 10:38Speaker 10: Very homely but unlikely sound a rooster crowing on moss piston.
- 10:43Speaker 5: I said, set that machine gun twenty five yards to
- 10:45Speaker 5: the flank. We'll stay here to the ground, Miss lifts,
- 10:48Speaker 5: I said, what do you make of the ground?
- 10:51Speaker 7: Horse grass, plain grass?
- 10:54Speaker 10: You can see some large foliage there with the mists
- 10:56Speaker 10: thin down.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Hold you fire, you fool my head, Captain, some kind
- 11:00Speaker 6: of wild animal.
- 11:01Speaker 12: I hit it.
- 11:01Speaker 9: I could see the tracers, but it's still standing.
- 11:03Speaker 6: Come on, Horst, Doctor Berger.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Off ahead, admiring the wild animal.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Careful, Herst, wait for us.
- 11:09Speaker 10: I don't worry, Captain. It's an iron deer a lawn
- 11:14Speaker 10: on the money. That's impossible. It's hollow. Interesting, isn't it?
- 11:20Speaker 5: A white washed Victorian iron deer is sitting on a
- 11:23Speaker 5: lawn in the middle of mass.
- 11:24Speaker 6: I don't understand.
- 11:25Speaker 7: Look around the mists, lifting the captain.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Look there it's a house, a regular old fashioned house.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Sir, on Mars.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Good lord, I haven't seen carved scrolls and gingerbread like
- 11:38Speaker 5: that in years. Look at that port swing the geraniums.
- 11:44Speaker 6: There, that's what it was.
- 11:45Speaker 5: A rooster, Captain, you give me the glasses, lustig, I
- 11:48Speaker 5: want to take a look for that front window. There's
- 11:52Speaker 5: an upright piano, some sheet music on it, plastic, it's
- 11:57Speaker 5: it's beautiful.
- 11:57Speaker 6: Ohio, I can't, hors horst.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Do you think that civilization of two planets could be identical?
- 12:04Speaker 10: I don't know that specific variety of uraniums is only
- 12:07Speaker 10: fifty years old or not?
- 12:08Speaker 5: Is it logical? But they should develop in Mars. How
- 12:10Speaker 5: about that port, swing of the piano and beautiful Ohio?
- 12:14Speaker 5: Why it's impossible, Captain Black, This looks like the town
- 12:19Speaker 5: I was born in.
- 12:21Speaker 6: It looks like my hometown too. I thought it something, Sir.
- 12:24Speaker 6: It's the only solution.
- 12:26Speaker 11: Maybe maybe we're not the first ship to reach Marsamarth.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Don't be ridiculous, lusting, Oh how else can you explain it?
- 12:31Speaker 6: I suppose some scientists got together. They invented some spaceship
- 12:34Speaker 6: and planet a colony. Year, that's the only answer.
- 12:37Speaker 5: That's some possible lusting ben space trouble. It couldn't be secret.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Do you have any idea what ships cost, what industrial
- 12:42Speaker 5: powers needed? No, there's got to be some logical reason.
- 12:46Speaker 10: I think perhaps we might find out. Captain the light
- 12:48Speaker 10: just went on, and then how.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Thingston covered that door of the machine gun? I say,
- 12:51Speaker 5: all right, come on, horseman, we're going to ring that doorbell.
- 12:56Speaker 5: There's got to be a scientific answer to all this.
- 13:03Speaker 10: And there's something moving in there. Stand back course, give
- 13:06Speaker 10: me a clear shot, and you're sure a bullet can
- 13:08Speaker 10: stop a martian?
- 13:09Speaker 6: Steady?
- 13:09Speaker 12: Now?
- 13:11Speaker 13: Can I help you?
- 13:13Speaker 12: Right?
- 13:14Speaker 6: Will we?
- 13:14Speaker 13: If you're selling anything, it's much to earn.
- 13:16Speaker 5: No, no, no, wait just a minute. What what town
- 13:19Speaker 5: is this?
- 13:20Speaker 13: What do you mean are you census takers?
- 13:21Speaker 3: No?
- 13:22Speaker 10: No, we're strangers here. We want to know how this
- 13:25Speaker 10: town got here.
- 13:26Speaker 7: Is this a game? No, No, it's not a game.
- 13:28Speaker 6: We're from Earth.
- 13:29Speaker 7: From where from Earth?
- 13:32Speaker 13: Do you mean? Out of the ground?
- 13:34Speaker 6: Are you sure you're feeling well? Madam?
- 13:36Speaker 5: We came in a flying ship across space. We're from
- 13:38Speaker 5: the third planet Earth. This is Mars. Now do you
- 13:41Speaker 5: understand Mars?
- 13:42Speaker 13: You go away.
- 13:42Speaker 14: Now you're here, I'll call my husband from stairs and
- 13:45Speaker 14: you'll chase you go on.
- 13:46Speaker 7: This is Mars, isn't it.
- 13:49Speaker 14: This is Green Lake, Wisconsin, in the United States of America, bounded.
- 13:53Speaker 13: On the east by the Advantage and on the west
- 13:55Speaker 13: by the Pacific. Now go away, goodbye, Furst.
- 13:58Speaker 5: Do you suppose it's really pass I've got to find
- 14:01Speaker 5: out more about this.
- 14:04Speaker 13: I told you, I call my husband.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Now you go away.
- 14:06Speaker 5: You've got to tell me one thing first. What year
- 14:09Speaker 5: is this year?
- 14:10Speaker 13: Nineteen twenty eight? Of course, for.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Goodness sake, you hear that horse, and we know it's
- 14:15Speaker 5: nineteen eighty seven, and we know.
- 14:16Speaker 6: This is Mars.
- 14:18Speaker 5: The horse is impossible that we got poled up, made
- 14:20Speaker 5: some tremendous blunder, circled around and landed back on Earth
- 14:23Speaker 5: in nineteen twenty eight.
- 14:24Speaker 6: Well maybe some switch in time or dimension.
- 14:26Speaker 15: Could we have shifted somehow gone gone backward in time?
- 14:30Speaker 5: Oh, horse, this won't hold water. It's it's not logical.
- 14:33Speaker 5: We've we checked every mile. We went past the Moon
- 14:36Speaker 5: out into space where we're on Mars. Lustick out a
- 14:39Speaker 5: point Taston in the rear keep that gun at half load.
- 14:42Speaker 5: I said, of course, there's got to be some cold
- 14:45Speaker 5: logical solution.
- 14:46Speaker 6: Cap.
- 14:47Speaker 5: But that house down the street, the white were the
- 14:50Speaker 5: green shutters leusting?
- 14:51Speaker 6: What's the matter?
- 14:52Speaker 15: I never thought, I never put up nothing.
- 14:55Speaker 5: Let's the come back here running for that house, crazy
- 14:57Speaker 5: fool leprin quick ross they stopped?
- 14:59Speaker 6: Come down? What the devil do you think you're doing?
- 15:06Speaker 6: But Tama, Grandpa, is you laste?
- 15:10Speaker 5: What is going on here?
- 15:11Speaker 6: Elbus?
- 15:12Speaker 16: See it's been so many years, how you've grown so goodness?
- 15:16Speaker 11: See, Captain, Grandma, I want you to meet my friends.
- 15:23Speaker 11: This is Captain Black. Captain, I want you to meet
- 15:26Speaker 11: my grandfather.
- 15:27Speaker 6: Party.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Any friend of Albert is a friend of ours.
- 15:31Speaker 6: How long have you been here, Grandma?
- 15:33Speaker 14: Oh?
- 15:33Speaker 13: A good many years. Ever since we died.
- 15:36Speaker 6: Ever since you what?
- 15:37Speaker 12: Oh?
- 15:37Speaker 6: Yes, they've been dead thirty years?
- 15:40Speaker 12: What? Oh?
- 15:40Speaker 14: Now, don't you trouble yourself. It's all right. We're alive again.
- 15:44Speaker 7: That's all you.
- 15:45Speaker 6: Mean to tell me? That Mars is heaven own nunsense?
- 15:48Speaker 9: No, all we know is here.
- 15:51Speaker 16: We're alive again, And who are we to question God's
- 15:55Speaker 16: infinite ways? Last think we're going back to the ship
- 15:59Speaker 16: cat And I want to talk to my grand.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Kind of blusting. I don't like any part of this.
- 16:03Speaker 5: You'll come back with us if I have to club
- 16:05Speaker 5: you and carry you.
- 16:06Speaker 6: I said, now let's go.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Heavin only knows what they've run up against. Back of
- 16:10Speaker 5: the ship.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Horse.
- 16:22Speaker 15: Look at that crowd around the ship.
- 16:23Speaker 10: It's like we're being welcome with a celebration, cap.
- 16:26Speaker 15: Celebration like abandoned ship.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Every report is open. No guard said you do master?
- 16:30Speaker 6: Hi, you captain?
- 16:32Speaker 9: Beat my old dad.
- 16:33Speaker 3: That's hell. I'm black.
- 16:35Speaker 9: I've got a bad eye for or not. I'm on
- 16:37Speaker 9: Hayston and what's it?
- 16:39Speaker 15: Bring that band back?
- 16:40Speaker 5: Use four of you? I have to yeah, Oh, excuse me,
- 16:42Speaker 5: says my uncle joy Hatest will be right back.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Have an uncle toy? What the devil?
- 16:46Speaker 5: Don't understand? So they've all found friends and relevant.
- 16:48Speaker 10: Look that they're all here, right, I've founded the whole
- 16:51Speaker 10: crews out in the crowd.
- 16:52Speaker 9: But I gave orders.
- 16:53Speaker 15: Coming to an order is don't understand, cap, I understand
- 16:56Speaker 15: new to me.
- 16:56Speaker 5: I don't care how many.
- 16:57Speaker 9: Relatives show up.
- 16:58Speaker 5: I'll have get the mont Honey.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Johnny, you old son of a gun with you?
- 17:04Speaker 6: Edward?
- 17:05Speaker 7: Yes, of course it is Johnny.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Johnny, doctor Horst, this is my brother Edward.
- 17:16Speaker 7: How do you do?
- 17:17Speaker 9: Hello, sir, It's.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Wonderful to see you, Edward.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Look, I've I've got to get back to my ship.
- 17:24Speaker 9: Johnny.
- 17:25Speaker 17: Wait, I almost forgot. Mom's waiting at home. Mom, Yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 17: and dad? Do Mom and dander alive? When when your
- 17:36Speaker 17: real head?
- 17:37Speaker 15: Well, of course, don't I feel for you, my head.
- 17:43Speaker 18: We've got lunch for you, Johnny, Mom's making corn fit.
- 17:46Speaker 6: It's doctor Horst.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I havn't two found anybody?
- 17:48Speaker 7: Oh no, God, no, I have nobody.
- 17:50Speaker 6: Well, then you come on home with me, right, Ed?
- 17:52Speaker 17: Why?
- 17:53Speaker 5: Sure, Hearst Hairst. You wouldn't believe it. But it's been
- 17:58Speaker 5: thirty five years since I had mom's car fitters, Bye, George,
- 18:03Speaker 5: thirty five years.
- 18:20Speaker 13: And there's plenty more in the kitchen.
- 18:22Speaker 14: So don't hold back, Johnny YouTube Doctor Horace.
- 18:25Speaker 9: Well, Johnny, you're stealing the Navy.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right, Dad, I'm in command of the ship.
- 18:29Speaker 5: We're an old Navy family, Doctor Horse. All three of
- 18:32Speaker 5: our boys in the seven ed was the best pilot
- 18:34Speaker 5: in the Pacific Tool What did happen?
- 18:37Speaker 17: Ed?
- 18:39Speaker 7: What's the difference?
- 18:40Speaker 9: I'm here now?
- 18:41Speaker 14: Yeah, but you know it's almost perfect. All we're missing
- 18:44Speaker 14: is your brother Will. Then the whole family could be together.
- 18:47Speaker 6: Well, it won't be long.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Mom, Will's in charge of the XR fifty four next
- 18:50Speaker 5: rocket coming out to Mars. Well, little Will, when does

- 19:58Speaker 13: You know, I can't understand.
- 20:00Speaker 14: And why you didn't find any folks here, doctor Horst,
- 20:03Speaker 14: It's just a shame. Everybody else is so happy.
- 20:06Speaker 10: I never remembered my family, Missus Black. All I know
- 20:09Speaker 10: is they were gassed at Daha during the Second World War.
- 20:12Speaker 10: When I was liberated, I was in delirium three months.
- 20:14Speaker 10: I cannot remember anything before then. A psychiatric phenomena.
- 20:18Speaker 13: That's terrible. Isn't there anything anybody can do?
- 20:21Speaker 10: I don't want to remember. I have not had a
- 20:24Speaker 10: pleasant life. I prefer to be free of emotional entanglements.
- 20:27Speaker 10: They interfere with a scientific approach.
- 20:30Speaker 13: I'm sorry, doctor Horst.
- 20:36Speaker 9: I'll get it.
- 20:37Speaker 6: That's our ring long and three shorts.
- 20:39Speaker 5: I remember that.

- 20:51Speaker 18: I'll be all right, Well, good night. Wait a minute,
- 20:54Speaker 18: doctor Horst. That phone message was for you me. Yes,
- 20:58Speaker 18: that's right, A message from Anna. No, I don't know there.
- 21:03Speaker 13: She must be an old friend. Isn't that nice?
- 21:06Speaker 7: I don't I should was for me. I don't remember
- 21:09Speaker 7: any Anna.
- 21:10Speaker 6: She asked if you were better.
- 21:12Speaker 13: Perhaps she's someone who knew.
- 21:13Speaker 18: You at Dahoo said, she's coming over here first thing
- 21:16Speaker 18: in the morning.
- 21:17Speaker 9: So you have to stay over.
- 21:18Speaker 6: Yes, but that it.
- 21:20Speaker 5: Then you stay here, horse, you can bunk with me
- 21:22Speaker 5: in my old room.
- 21:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 9: But Johnny, we thought you'd like to be.
- 21:25Speaker 13: With Edward so you could talk the way you're used to.
- 21:27Speaker 5: We can't put doctor Horse on the day bed. I
- 21:29Speaker 5: think we better share the room tonight. There be plenty
- 21:31Speaker 5: of time for talking.
- 21:32Speaker 7: Ed, Yes, I guess so.
- 21:34Speaker 5: I suppose I better dropped back to the ship, you know,
- 21:37Speaker 5: ed security check.
- 21:38Speaker 13: But why do you have to do that here?
- 21:41Speaker 5: I don't know, Mom, is no good reason. I guess
- 21:44Speaker 5: it was.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Suppose we skip it tonight. Well, good night, everybody.
- 21:49Speaker 13: Oh, it's good Dad, your home, Johnny, it's.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Good to be home.
- 21:53Speaker 12: Mom, catain black, Huh you asleep?
- 22:15Speaker 6: No?
- 22:15Speaker 5: No, I've been thinking about what we were expecting, green
- 22:22Speaker 5: skinned martians All the time there was only Mom and
- 22:24Speaker 5: Dad and Edward waiting. That's funny. What tricks your imagination
- 22:29Speaker 5: can play on you. Oh, I guess Mars is heaven Horse.
- 22:33Speaker 7: You know, I've been thinking about Martians too. Gotten.
- 22:39Speaker 10: Just suppose suppose there were Martians, you know, and they
- 22:43Speaker 10: saw us land, and suppose they thought of us as invaders.
- 22:47Speaker 10: What would be the best weapon they could use against
- 22:49Speaker 10: our appom bombs.
- 22:50Speaker 6: I don't see what you're getting at.
- 22:52Speaker 10: They would want to disarm us first, huh, to wipe
- 22:55Speaker 10: out all suspicions. Can make us feel at home? Suppose
- 23:02Speaker 10: this house isn't real. I suppose the people are just
- 23:06Speaker 10: images stolen from our own memories by Martians, created for
- 23:10Speaker 10: us by telepathy.
- 23:12Speaker 5: That's the craziest theory I ever heard.
- 23:15Speaker 10: Maybe that's why there was no one for me, because
- 23:17Speaker 10: in all my life there is no happy memory, no
- 23:19Speaker 10: real love person, not even my mother. I don't remember her,
- 23:21Speaker 10: only the piles of rotten compass of Daha. There was
- 23:24Speaker 10: no happy emotion for these people to recreate.
- 23:29Speaker 6: How about that phone call Anna?
- 23:31Speaker 7: Yes, Anna, I didn't remember who she was. That I
- 23:34Speaker 7: do now.
- 23:34Speaker 10: I just remember when I was freed from Daha, sick, delirious,
- 23:40Speaker 10: I raved about a wonderful kind nurse named Anna that
- 23:43Speaker 10: took care of her.
- 23:43Speaker 6: You were It's largical She's coming to see you tomorrow.
- 23:46Speaker 7: But there was no Anna. I've been nursed by a man.
- 23:49Speaker 10: Anna was only a dream, and there's only one way
- 23:52Speaker 10: they could have learned about her by reading my subconscious mind.
- 23:55Speaker 10: That's impossible, herd, why the whole crew was thinking of home.
- 24:00Speaker 10: Suppose the martians read our mind. If there are Martians.
- 24:03Speaker 10: If there are, they have a separated each man in
- 24:07Speaker 10: a different house, sleeping, trusting no one at the guns,
- 24:16Speaker 10: and I.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Left my pistol downstairs. Do you think there's something to
- 24:22Speaker 5: this course? It's a perfect trap, Captain. Who would suspect
- 24:28Speaker 5: his own mother, his grandparents?
- 24:32Speaker 7: How easy? Just a knife in the heart of each
- 24:35Speaker 7: sleeping man.
- 24:37Speaker 5: That's impossible, Horst. But we've we've got to get back
- 24:41Speaker 5: to the ship. Listen, the crickets have stopped. Come on,
- 24:47Speaker 5: we don't know when they change back to what happened.
- 24:50Speaker 5: They really are like.
- 24:51Speaker 7: Carol, where are you going? John Head?
- 25:01Speaker 5: We we wanted to drink of water.
- 25:03Speaker 6: That's that's all ed.
- 25:05Speaker 7: You're not mercy, John. You don't want a dream.
- 25:10Speaker 6: Look out, you don't. It's it's changing. He's a mass.
- 25:15Speaker 6: Run horse, run, you can get away? This horse? Har fire? Hello, Hello,
- 25:30Speaker 6: can you hear me? Earth? This?
- 25:32Speaker 5: This is Captain John Black the x R fifty three
- 25:35Speaker 5: calling from ours. I've blocked myself in the ship, but
- 25:37Speaker 5: they've crippled it. I can't take off a fire of
- 25:39Speaker 5: the guns and they're coming from me now, the martians.
- 25:42Speaker 5: I'm all alone here. All the rest are dead. Kingston,
- 25:44Speaker 5: lustic doctor horse, poor horse.
- 25:45Speaker 6: He didn't even reach the door.
- 25:47Speaker 15: Listen, listen, they're trying to break through.
- 25:50Speaker 6: The hall Edward and Mom cast all the folks.
- 25:52Speaker 15: But they're changing now, they're melting and changing back into
- 25:56Speaker 15: their Martians. Can you understand martians?
- 25:59Speaker 9: Men?
- 26:00Speaker 15: They think that Mars was heaven and we talked to
- 26:02Speaker 15: the trap.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Can you hear me, Earth.
- 26:04Speaker 15: You've got this, got the next rocket?
- 26:06Speaker 5: Listen, tell my brother.
- 26:07Speaker 15: Will tell my brother not the calm. They'll trap him too.
- 26:10Speaker 15: Tell them all, Hello, Hello, can you hear me Arth?
