- 0:30Speaker 2: It is time to leave your worries outside. Been laugh
- 0:34Speaker 2: with us inside the treehouse. I'm Daniel Melley along with
- 0:36Speaker 2: Trey Trenholm, Texas has gone backwards on THC. Trey helped
- 0:46Speaker 2: me I remember my dance steps properly. The two step
- 0:50Speaker 2: is sort of like one step to the left and
- 0:54Speaker 2: like two to the right. No, it's one step sort
- 0:58Speaker 2: of forward to back.
- 0:59Speaker 1: To two forward. Well, it depends. The two step is
- 1:03Speaker 1: a waltz. Basically, it's a two steps forward, one step side.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It's like shuffle left left right, left left right.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Sort of a sort of a toygy waltz.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's just a waltz.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It's just yeah, but with some country toying on it.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Well, the New Texas two step is one forward and
- 1:25Speaker 2: two back, especially when it comes to laws concerning THC.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Because that's exactly what happened in Texas just a couple
- 1:33Speaker 2: of weeks ago, a couple of weeks ago, our dear
- 1:36Speaker 2: Governor Greg Abbott, And I don't know exactly how he
- 1:41Speaker 2: did this. This is where I need your political and
- 1:44Speaker 2: government knowledge, okay, because you were you were poly sci
- 1:49Speaker 2: major at UT.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Right government at UT. But yes, same thing, okay.
- 1:56Speaker 2: So how is it that our fair governor is able
- 2:00Speaker 2: to enact this new THC band across the entire state
- 2:07Speaker 2: seemingly single handedly? And when I say that, it's not
- 2:09Speaker 2: like he was the only one that did it. But
- 2:12Speaker 2: I don't know anyone in the state of Texas, you know, voters,
- 2:15Speaker 2: the electorate, the citizens that were that wanted this. I
- 2:19Speaker 2: don't know anyone that was asking for it. And now
- 2:24Speaker 2: we've got this huge, new dangerous THC law.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I believe this is so in the regular session, they
- 2:35Speaker 1: the legislature passed something, he actually vetoed it. Then when
- 2:38Speaker 1: they went back in special session, they passed this form
- 2:43Speaker 1: and it was enacted and then set for whenever it
- 2:47Speaker 1: came to August first July thirty first, whenever it started. Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I don't think he unilaterally just passed a law.
- 2:55Speaker 2: But and and that's where I maybe need some clear
- 3:00Speaker 2: occasion because at the very least from those of us
- 3:04Speaker 2: that you know, from the citizenry of Texas, I don't
- 3:07Speaker 2: know anyone that was clamoring for this. Look like, I'm
- 3:11Speaker 2: all for you know, quote unquote law and order. If
- 3:13Speaker 2: you do bad, you should go to jail kind of stuff.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I'm not saying that's not the case. But when it
- 3:19Speaker 2: comes to THC and things, they're basically turning there. Like
- 3:25Speaker 2: on July thirtieth, whatever gummies you had that were just
- 3:30Speaker 2: for recreational or therapeutic purposes the next day turned into
- 3:36Speaker 2: category one felonies carrying massive amounts of jail time. And
- 3:44Speaker 2: it's kind of scary how we can go so quickly,
- 3:48Speaker 2: almost in the blink of an eye, to Texas kind
- 3:52Speaker 2: of being okay with a little bit of THC to
- 3:58Speaker 2: having one of the st THC laws in the country.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Well number one, if you look at the overall law,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you have to understand who was behind this. And the
- 4:16Speaker 1: biggest driving force behind this new law was the medical
- 4:20Speaker 1: marijuana community. They spent you know, when they Texas past
- 4:25Speaker 1: medical marijuana, a lot of these you know outfits spent
- 4:28Speaker 1: a lot of money getting their business aligned with the law,
- 4:35Speaker 1: medical people, prescriptions, everything else. And then all of a sudden,
- 4:40Speaker 1: Delta eight and Delta nine came around, which totally skirted
- 4:45Speaker 1: the need for medical marijuana because you could go into
- 4:47Speaker 1: any headshop, you know, vape shop, whatever and buy the stuff.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So and that, you know, that's part why they they're
- 4:58Speaker 1: they're trying to crack down on it so so hard.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So people have to go to the medical marijuana dispensaries
- 5:05Speaker 1: in Texas to get this stuff because it's not you
- 5:09Speaker 1: can't bring it in from Colorado, Oklahoma, wherever. You know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: then you get into federal deal off. You're now transporting
- 5:16Speaker 1: across state lines. And that's the biggest The biggest thing
- 5:22Speaker 1: they're going after in the gummies are the Delta and
- 5:24Speaker 1: Delta nine, the THHC gummies.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It's fascinating to me that you say that it was
- 5:30Speaker 2: the medical marijuana arm that was behind this, because most
- 5:35Speaker 2: of us have learned in recent years that whenever anti
- 5:39Speaker 2: marijuana sentiment grows, it's usually at the behest of the
- 5:45Speaker 2: quote unquote package industry. Which is the liquor stores and
- 5:48Speaker 2: the beer and alcoholic beverage industry because they some reason
- 5:54Speaker 2: take hits on sales when marijuana is legalized. But in
- 5:57Speaker 2: this case, it's actually the medical marijuana.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Soon I think it's the alcohol industry and it's not.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It's it's kind of like, you know, who's the biggest
- 6:08Speaker 1: opponent of Texas legalizing gambling?
- 6:13Speaker 2: I honestly at this point don't know. Las Vegas, Okay, gotcha?
- 6:18Speaker 1: And Oklahoma? Now, uh, you know who are their biggest
- 6:21Speaker 1: feeder markets Texas? Yeah?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I will say that the package industry does still
- 6:27Speaker 2: have plenty to say on this. It's not just the
- 6:30Speaker 2: medical marijuana because I saw just a few days ago
- 6:34Speaker 2: the guy that either runs or started Total Wine is
- 6:40Speaker 2: a big donor to Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick h and
- 6:44Speaker 2: has contributed to his campaign. So I mean, it's it. Oh,
- 6:47Speaker 2: the liquor industry is still involved in it, probably, but
- 6:50Speaker 2: it makes But but I hadn't thought about the fact
- 6:53Speaker 2: that the medical marijuana side was, you know, so heavily in.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Don't let it confuse that's something because someone owns you know,
- 6:59Speaker 1: I mean, and I think Dan Patrick's a twat, so
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know, don't confuse just because someone owns total Wine
- 7:07Speaker 1: that they're contributing to Dan Patrick just because of his
- 7:12Speaker 1: heart on for medical marijuana, I mean our first from
- 7:15Speaker 1: marijuana in general, he's against all of it.
- 7:18Speaker 2: There is a jump to conclusions, but the involvement does
- 7:22Speaker 2: raise the question of it, you.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Know, drinking habits. The alcohol industry is taking a hit
- 7:32Speaker 1: right now just because everyone forget, alcohol was the one
- 7:36Speaker 1: business during the pandemic that boomed. It's one of the
- 7:40Speaker 1: very few I shouldn't say what, but very few businesses
- 7:43Speaker 1: that really thrived in the pandemic because everyone stayed home
- 7:47Speaker 1: and drank. I mean, Bars suffered for two then you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: twenty twenty two was for the most part of magical
- 7:56Speaker 1: year in Bars. I was ran one of the few
- 7:58Speaker 1: that actually grew in twenty in twenty one. But uh,
- 8:03Speaker 1: in general, and now alcohol industries, you know, and as
- 8:07Speaker 1: businesses in America do all the time. Everyone was like,
- 8:11Speaker 1: oh my god, and they it's like Republic National just
- 8:15Speaker 1: went bankrupt. I just followed for bankruptcy, which is one
- 8:17Speaker 1: of the largest distributors in the country. Why they did
- 8:22Speaker 1: things like and there's there's a Texaswissney called balcons Now,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I'm gonna say this, it's a ship product judging, and
- 8:37Speaker 1: and you know, go back and look who endorsed them skimmed.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah. You know why though, right, because it's a ship product. Well,
- 8:52Speaker 2: at one point Ben's brother was the head of marketing.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Oh well, you know, well, good marketing only goes so
- 9:01Speaker 1: far and you have a shit product.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And then when he didn't work there anymore, somehow that
- 9:07Speaker 2: endorsement went away. Yeah, that's that's just what I've heard.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I don't know that for sure, fair enough, but yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I think they paid like one hundred million dollars or
- 9:19Speaker 1: something for Balconas, and it's like, oh, they threw all
- 9:23Speaker 1: this money at Texas whiskey. For the most part, Texas
- 9:26Speaker 1: whiskey has been crap. And even bigger problem is is
- 9:31Speaker 1: they come on the market and they want to be
- 9:33Speaker 1: at a price point that's higher than let's say, Crown Royal.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Long established heritage brand.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Yes, and people forget it's like Tito's. Yeah, Tito's sells
- 9:44Speaker 1: for about I don't know, probably thirty dollars for a
- 9:46Speaker 1: one point seventy five now. But when I was in
- 9:50Speaker 1: college at UT in the nineties, Tito himself slept his
- 9:55Speaker 1: vodka from bars to bar on Sixth Street at six
- 9:59Speaker 1: dollars a y, just trying to get into being the
- 10:02Speaker 1: house vodka. And that's how he started it. And now
- 10:06Speaker 1: he can turn down. I think the last time I
- 10:08Speaker 1: saw him was he turned down like twelve billion dollars.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Tito's is one of the great stories as far as
- 10:15Speaker 2: like how marketing and certain things can help a product.
- 10:20Speaker 1: How marketing and Texas branding, because if if everyone's going
- 10:25Speaker 1: to be honest, Tito's is not a great vodka.
- 10:29Speaker 2: No, it's it's not bad.
- 10:32Speaker 1: It's middle of the road, great marketing.
- 10:36Speaker 2: There's a lot to unpack there about everything you just covered,
- 10:39Speaker 2: and I want to dig into a lot of it.
- 10:41Speaker 2: First of which is from a personal standpoint on the
- 10:44Speaker 2: Tito's side of things, if you're buying a handle of
- 10:47Speaker 2: Tito's from around thirty bucks in Texas, you're getting a
- 10:50Speaker 2: really good deal. Where I am currently in the state
- 10:53Speaker 2: of Oregon and where I bought some in Washington State
- 10:56Speaker 2: as we were driving from Seattle down to Portland. On
- 11:00Speaker 2: where you go, it might be in the thirties or
- 11:02Speaker 2: the low forties. In the US Virgin Islands. Tito's is
- 11:09Speaker 2: a top shelf vodka I mean to buy a handle
- 11:14Speaker 2: of that is in the forties. Meanwhile, Stolich Nayah same
- 11:20Speaker 2: size is going to be in the twenties.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And I would argue that Stolei is a better vodka, and.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna fight.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I will, I will. I have said this for decades.
- 11:38Speaker 1: The best vodka for the money is Monopolova.
- 11:43Speaker 2: That's what I've been, That's what I've had right now
- 11:46Speaker 2: the last couple of.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Weeks, Manapulova for the money. That's vodka there is now.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Because I know someone somewhere listening right now is screaming
- 11:56Speaker 2: at their phone or on Patreon or on YouTuber something,
- 12:00Speaker 2: and they're going like, whoa, whoa, whoa, How does Trey
- 12:02Speaker 2: know he just posted he's ten years sober? How does
- 12:05Speaker 2: Trey know what what Tito's tastes like? Or Valconas.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Valcontas actually had I believe it come out right before
- 12:17Speaker 1: I actually quit drinking. How do I how do I know? So?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Over my career in the bar business, I'll conservatively say
- 12:27Speaker 1: I oversaw fifty million dollars in liquor sales, and over
- 12:31Speaker 1: that time, huh, conservatively conservatively.
- 12:35Speaker 2: And.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I've known people with very good palettes, people that have
- 12:41Speaker 1: taken courses that you know, there are courses like that
- 12:44Speaker 1: make you where you're and wine for liquor and everything else,
- 12:49Speaker 1: and I trust their opinion. Now, I drank plenty of Tito's.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Tito's is not new, don't don't. Like I said, Tito's
- 12:56Speaker 1: was around in the nineties.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And you were too, and you were in college.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I was a budding alcoholic.
- 13:04Speaker 2: You and Tito's crossbats at the perfect time.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yeah, uh you know. Let's I mean, flavored vodkas were
- 13:14Speaker 1: just getting popular as I quit drinking. Deep Eddie the
- 13:18Speaker 1: one of the last things boy and man didn't get
- 13:20Speaker 1: me a trial. I mean Deep Eddy Sweet Tea vodka
- 13:22Speaker 1: came out right about probably a year before I quit drinking,
- 13:25Speaker 1: and man, I.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Had I think that may have pushed you over the edge.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Oh man, I will say this. You know you take
- 13:34Speaker 1: that on the rock splash of water with a lemon, man,
- 13:39Speaker 1: you can you can get in some trouble with that stuff, well.
- 13:42Speaker 2: All day, all day. But yeah, that's that's one of
- 13:49Speaker 2: the things I wanted to mention there. As far as
- 13:51Speaker 2: everything you had mentioned that I wanted to unpack in there.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll tell you with the Balconis, multiple bars I
- 14:01Speaker 1: had we because of a liquor wrap or something, I
- 14:04Speaker 1: would get a bottle of Balcona's It's set. It would
- 14:09Speaker 1: set there for two years. Damn. So you finally I
- 14:13Speaker 1: I I basically to finally get rid of it. I
- 14:18Speaker 1: think I priced it at four dollars and I still
- 14:21Speaker 1: had trouble getting rid of it.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. And then the other thing I wanted to
- 14:26Speaker 2: mention that you mentioned earlier is like back to the
- 14:28Speaker 2: Balconas saying you said Texas whiskey for the most part
- 14:31Speaker 2: is crap. Now when you say Texas whiskey, you mean
- 14:35Speaker 2: whiskey from Texas. The differentiator in there might be TX Whiskey,
- 14:41Speaker 2: which is I think bottled in Fort Worth, TX.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Was one of the first t X came out when
- 14:50Speaker 1: they first started, at a fairly reasonable price point.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I liked it. I haven't had it in quite a while,
- 14:59Speaker 2: so that's so I say light. But when I would
- 15:01Speaker 2: have it years ago, I I liked it, especially for
- 15:04Speaker 2: the price mhm h, and especially compared to Balconis, because
- 15:11Speaker 2: I remember having both in the studio at one point
- 15:14Speaker 2: and going like, oh, give me that t X over
- 15:16Speaker 2: the balconas, so you know.
- 15:21Speaker 1: But yeah, t X whiskey, I always get a Tips
- 15:27Speaker 1: whiskey was fine, and they're bourbon. But Bourbon's technically I
- 15:31Speaker 1: think supposed to still come from Kentucky. Uh but uh
- 15:36Speaker 1: but no, I t X nice little cinnamon twist, a
- 15:40Speaker 1: little oh hints of cinnamon in there. It was solid.
- 15:44Speaker 1: But but and it's not. I shouldn't. I'm not just
- 15:45Speaker 1: trying to bag on the bourbon. Bourbon exploded after the pandemic,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and I mean prices were through went through the roof,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and then now you know, they're slowly starting to come
- 16:05Speaker 1: back down. Like, eh, Taylor, really they make some great bourbons,
- 16:09Speaker 1: great whiskeys, but you know what once was forty dollars
- 16:13Speaker 1: a bottle, then all of a sudden is eighty dollars
- 16:15Speaker 1: a bottle. Well it's not that great anymore. And you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: it's just it's like everything does in our you know,
- 16:21Speaker 1: boom and bus cycle. We don't as a country, we
- 16:24Speaker 1: don't know moderation really well. And so that's how it
- 16:27Speaker 1: how it go.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So let's go back to the bust side of the
- 16:31Speaker 2: beginnings of this conversation, and that was the THC law
- 16:35Speaker 2: in Texas and that changed. So in Texas, here's how
- 16:41Speaker 2: much prison time possessing THC gummies can now get you
- 16:45Speaker 2: in Texas. Okay, less than a gram, so basically one
- 16:49Speaker 2: gummy can get you one hundred and eighty days up
- 16:53Speaker 2: to two years. One too, under four grams, basically two
- 16:59Speaker 2: gummies two to ten years. And then the range goes
- 17:06Speaker 2: up from there four grams to less than four hundred grams,
- 17:10Speaker 2: so like a handful of gummies two to twenty years,
- 17:16Speaker 2: and then over four hundred grams of gummies to me
- 17:20Speaker 2: because I'm not the marijuana person. Roughly the amount of
- 17:25Speaker 2: a bag of Harrowbo gummy bears but loaded with THC
- 17:31Speaker 2: will get you five to ninety nine years or life,
- 17:34Speaker 2: as if there's a difference between ninety nine years and life.
- 17:39Speaker 2: So you know, on July thirtieth, whatever gummies you had
- 17:44Speaker 2: were cool, and the next day they're felonise. That was
- 17:48Speaker 2: pretty lard.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Mind you. You also have to have the whatever county
- 17:53Speaker 1: you're in, the local DA agreed to. Like, I don't
- 17:58Speaker 1: think Dallas is going out of their way to prosecute anyone. Now,
- 18:01Speaker 1: Colin County probably will.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yep, they will, and It's interesting too because
- 18:05Speaker 2: I managed I was like, Okay, does this now make
- 18:07Speaker 2: Texas the strictest THCHC law in the country, And it
- 18:12Speaker 2: actually does not. That esteem goes to Idaho, and I
- 18:22Speaker 2: believe it was uh Nebraska. Yeah, Idaho and Nebraska actually
- 18:28Speaker 2: have stricter THC laws on the books than Texas, although
- 18:32Speaker 2: Texas is, you know, right up there with them. And
- 18:36Speaker 2: we had mentioned the medical use in Texas and how
- 18:40Speaker 2: medical the medical marijuana industry is what is sort of pushing.
- 18:46Speaker 1: They were one of the big driving forces.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's interesting to mention that even though and
- 18:53Speaker 2: this to me, I think is one of the most
- 18:54Speaker 2: fascinating things about it is you've got the medical side
- 18:57Speaker 2: pushing for this despite the fact it's not like Texas
- 19:01Speaker 2: has a free wheeling medical marijuana situation itself. It's not
- 19:06Speaker 2: like California where you can just get some rando writing
- 19:09Speaker 2: you a script and you go into a dispensary and
- 19:11Speaker 2: you're walking out. Texas is still really strict even on
- 19:14Speaker 2: its medical side. Texas operates the restrictive Compassionate Use Program,
- 19:19Speaker 2: which allows registered physicians to prescribe low THHC cannabis for
- 19:25Speaker 2: specific qualifying conditions, So it's a high bar to reach.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Even for medical marijuana use in Texas. It's better than
- 19:38Speaker 2: it used to be, but it's it's not like it
- 19:40Speaker 2: was like I'm sad, Okay, here's a you know, well, no.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Even Oklahoma is pretty easy. I mean you have a
- 19:47Speaker 1: a doctor and a dispensary, like, oh yeah, you've got
- 19:50Speaker 1: so and so sure, which I don't know that the
- 19:55Speaker 1: problem is from my understanding is that the medical marijuana
- 19:59Speaker 1: I fits, they had to jump through a lot of
- 20:01Speaker 1: hoops and pay a lot of money to get to
- 20:03Speaker 1: get their certification to be you know, under the compact
- 20:07Speaker 1: whatever it's called. And then all of a sudden, I said,
- 20:11Speaker 1: then you no one needed them because you could go
- 20:14Speaker 1: to your local vape shop and buy Delta Delta nine
- 20:17Speaker 1: gummies and and that's why so much of this is
- 20:20Speaker 1: on focused on the gummies and not on actual marijuana,
- 20:26Speaker 1: Like yeah, that you smoke is because that's where the
- 20:29Speaker 1: Delta and Delta nine thrived. And it listen, I I
- 20:35Speaker 1: have some pothead friends that they freaked out, still are
- 20:39Speaker 1: freaking out just because they're like, well, how do I
- 20:42Speaker 1: know that you know, what I've got doesn't have you know,
- 20:46Speaker 1: delta delta nine in it and I'm gonna, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 1: get sent away to prison. I'm like, you're probably okay,
- 20:52Speaker 1: but but it is.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It's and don't get pulled over. Ten and two, brother,
- 20:58Speaker 2: ten and two you think to draw any attention to
- 21:01Speaker 2: the fact that you may have some fun gummies.
- 21:05Speaker 1: And listen, you know, I mean we could. Greg Abbott
- 21:08Speaker 1: has turned in. I mean, I know a lot of
- 21:09Speaker 1: people don't like him, but he is disappointing more and
- 21:13Speaker 1: more people as time goes on. Uh, some of the
- 21:19Speaker 1: stuff he has let happen and the things that he
- 21:25Speaker 1: was quietly for, you know, then he's like, oh no,
- 21:29Speaker 1: you know is mind boggling. And that he'll win another
- 21:35Speaker 1: term as equally mind boggling. And it goes to show
- 21:39Speaker 1: that biggest Democrats can't come up with a effing candidate.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I mean, if they could go dig up Anne Richards, God,
- 21:48Speaker 1: she would win. She would could win the presidency.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Amen, brother. I think about that. I keep thinking about
- 21:54Speaker 2: the fact that it even though it was a long
- 21:57Speaker 2: time ago to people in age bracket, nothing feels like
- 22:01Speaker 2: forever ago, But it was a mere thirty years ago
- 22:05Speaker 2: that we had the last democratic governor of Texas. And
- 22:08Speaker 2: when you think back to Anne Richards, she doesn't exactly scream,
- 22:14Speaker 2: you know, blue blood, bleeding heart liberal, but I mean
- 22:18Speaker 2: she was a you know, a good ass Texas woman
- 22:21Speaker 2: and she led the state and she did really well.
- 22:23Speaker 1: The sad thing is a liberal Democrat thirty years ago
- 22:28Speaker 1: is a middle of the road conservative today.
- 22:32Speaker 2: But it's amazing the extremes we have reached. Those of
- 22:36Speaker 2: us that kind of hang out in the middle at
- 22:38Speaker 2: times are like, why are you guys way over there?
- 22:41Speaker 2: What the hell happened?
- 22:42Speaker 1: But Anne Richards was funny. She she knew how to
- 22:46Speaker 1: play politics. I mean, she's why we have the lottery
- 22:51Speaker 1: because she knew, you know, let him do the whole provision.
- 22:56Speaker 1: You know that for a long time there were places
- 22:58Speaker 1: in East Texas where let's say you had a convenience store,
- 23:02Speaker 1: well you had a secret window in the back is
- 23:04Speaker 1: where you sold the lottery tickets. None of the church
- 23:06Speaker 1: folks will see you buying them. The same thing with liquor.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I really wish someone could dig up An
- 23:13Speaker 2: Richards and put her back in the game because.
- 23:17Speaker 1: She funny, and she got she was funny.
- 23:19Speaker 2: She she she would spank the current governor Lieutenant governor
- 23:27Speaker 2: of Texas. I mean I don't mean that verbally in
- 23:30Speaker 2: a debate. I mean during a debate, she might actually
- 23:32Speaker 2: grab grab Greg Abbot out of his chair and put
- 23:35Speaker 2: him over her lap in spanks ass. Same with Dan Patrick.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And guess what, they'd probably have to just kind of
- 23:42Speaker 2: take it because she's gonna remind them of their meme ball.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, but she got so for good and bad,
- 23:56Speaker 1: She got so much done, And yeah, I think the
- 23:59Speaker 1: Hey people would be she was just she was a
- 24:03Speaker 1: little bit too early for the national platform. But I
- 24:07Speaker 1: think today people would absolutely fall in love with her.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Maybe that's what we need to do when you start
- 24:13Speaker 2: unearthing some Ann Richard's clips and be like, ah, here
- 24:17Speaker 2: we go, let's get back to this please. This segment
- 24:23Speaker 2: of the Treehouse is brought to you by COOKDFW Roofing
- 24:26Speaker 2: and Restoration. We don't say this lightly, but if you
- 24:28Speaker 2: have a problem on your roof, around your home, inside
- 24:31Speaker 2: your home, you want to change some things up, maybe
- 24:34Speaker 2: get a new bathroom, get a new kitchen. Call the
- 24:37Speaker 2: cooks eight three three cook DFW eight three three COOKDFW,
- 24:41Speaker 2: the website, cookdfw dot com. Trey probably knows this better
- 24:45Speaker 2: than I do. But finding a good contractor is really
- 24:48Speaker 2: effing hard. When it comes to finding a roofer that
- 24:52Speaker 2: you can actually trust, is really effing hard. Finding a
- 24:55Speaker 2: contractor that can come in and do a job on
- 24:58Speaker 2: the inside or the outside of your home to the
- 25:01Speaker 2: level that you want at a price that you're okay with.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Call the Cooks eight three three cook dfw or the
- 25:10Speaker 2: website cookdfw dot com.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Well, and I will say this about the Cooks is yeah,
- 25:20Speaker 1: they're gonna be give you a great price. Now, it
- 25:22Speaker 1: may not be the great price that you like. When
- 25:26Speaker 1: they came and look at at my Stepmom's at Jackie's roof,
- 25:31Speaker 1: Daniel called me and goes, listen, I know this, he goes,
- 25:33Speaker 1: this is probably in the number you want to hear.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But this is what it takes to do it right.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And that's I would much rather have someone tell me
- 25:41Speaker 1: that than go, oh, yeah, you know, we can do
- 25:44Speaker 1: it for this very midischool amount and you're going, really,
- 25:48Speaker 1: you know, sometimes it can be too good to be true.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And not only they're gonna give you a great price,
- 25:55Speaker 1: but they're gonna give you a great great price doing it.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Correctly and by doing it correctly comes with great warranties.
- 26:02Speaker 2: So if something does go wrong with the product or whatever,
- 26:06Speaker 2: you're covered and they got your back. Eight three three
- 26:09Speaker 2: cook THEFW. That's for yourself, that's for your business. That
- 26:12Speaker 2: can be for a family member like Trey calling for
- 26:14Speaker 2: a step mom. You know Someboddy with a house you
- 26:17Speaker 2: call the cooks eight three three cook DFW. That inspection
- 26:20Speaker 2: is free. If you want an estimate on other stuff,
- 26:22Speaker 2: those things are free as well. A three three cook DFW.
- 26:24Speaker 2: All right, today is Wednesday, August nineteenth, twenty twenty six.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Let's celebrate today with some birthdays. Oh man, I hate
- 26:41Speaker 2: it when I go to birthdays and I get excited
- 26:42Speaker 2: about one and then I see that they're dead. Nate
- 26:47Speaker 2: Dogg today is his birthday. But apparently he died in
- 26:50Speaker 2: twenty eleven.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I'm not saying years ago.
- 26:54Speaker 2: I've totally forgotten it. I mean, it was fifteen years
- 26:57Speaker 2: ago that he that he died, So I guess maybe
- 26:59Speaker 2: I'm sure I knew it at the time, but I
- 27:01Speaker 2: didn't stay in my brain. So oh no, RIFP date
- 27:04Speaker 2: dog regulators mount up and but not really anyway, he
- 27:10Speaker 2: would have been fifty seven, one of the defining voices
- 27:13Speaker 2: of West Coast hip hop. Yeah, that song is still
- 27:17Speaker 2: still one of my favorites from back in the day.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Oh that's I mean, that is a classic.
- 27:23Speaker 2: That's an old timer, especially especially when I think they
- 27:26Speaker 2: used it on the Young Guns two soundtrack. Or is
- 27:32Speaker 2: that where he actually got the line? That's where line
- 27:35Speaker 2: was from the first Young Guns because it was Charlie Sheen.
- 27:38Speaker 2: I think that had the line in the first one,
- 27:40Speaker 2: which is Regulator's mount up.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Well, I still I think that was even that was
- 27:46Speaker 1: after Young So Young the Young Gun. What was the
- 27:51Speaker 1: difference between the the first one was Young Gun and
- 27:53Speaker 1: the second.
- 27:53Speaker 2: One was Young Young Guns too? Okay, yeah, because that
- 27:58Speaker 2: the official titles were Young Guns one and Young Guns two.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Back in the Saddle Okay, I'm making that up. That
- 28:05Speaker 2: wasn't the full title.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Regulate Regulars came out after both of those, but yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 1: that yeah, he sampled the SoundBite and I think is
- 28:17Speaker 1: he the one I want to say, Snoop Dogg like
- 28:21Speaker 1: bailed him out of jail to come to a concert or.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Oh, maybe I'd have to look that one up. Other
- 28:30Speaker 2: birthdays today. From the opposite side of the music spectrum,
- 28:33Speaker 2: Leanne Walmack is sixty. She is still alive. Grammy winning
- 28:38Speaker 2: country singer best known for I Hope You Dance and
- 28:41Speaker 2: Johnny High's Country Review in Arlington. Yes, she look it up.
- 28:48Speaker 2: She was part of Johnny High's Country Review back in
- 28:51Speaker 2: the day.
- 28:51Speaker 1: As I don't even know what that is.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I didn't either, but my ex Carrie when I don't
- 29:00Speaker 2: if I was still in if we were still in
- 29:02Speaker 2: high school. But it was at like the downtown Arlington theaters.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I don't even know if that's still there, but I
- 29:11Speaker 2: think it was like Johnny Heyights' theaters. Anyway, it's it's
- 29:13Speaker 2: fuzzy memory stuff. I mean, this is over thirty. This
- 29:16Speaker 2: is like thirty years ago, right. Apparently Leanne Womack was
- 29:20Speaker 2: part of his show when she was a little girl
- 29:24Speaker 2: because she was an amazing still is, as far as
- 29:27Speaker 2: I know, an amazing singer as an adult. If you're
- 29:30Speaker 2: an amazing singer as an adult, you probably were an
- 29:32Speaker 2: amazing singer as a kid, and you get you get
- 29:34Speaker 2: discovered pretty quickly. But I remember we went to this
- 29:39Speaker 2: show with her parents and like grandparents I think as well,
- 29:42Speaker 2: in Arlington at this theater, and it was Johnny High's
- 29:45Speaker 2: like Country Review, and it was known, really well known
- 29:49Speaker 2: in the area, I guess, except that I hadn't heard
- 29:51Speaker 2: of it, and then it was like its prominence was
- 29:56Speaker 2: raised a little bit by the you know, celebrity of
- 29:59Speaker 2: one Leanne.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Learn.
- 30:03Speaker 2: There you go. Yeah, uh, I'm ed best is fifty three.
- 30:08Speaker 2: This is a guy that I feel bad for ish.
- 30:13Speaker 2: He is the actor and voice behind jar Jar Binks
- 30:15Speaker 2: in the Star Wars prequels. I say I feel I
- 30:21Speaker 2: say I feel bad ish for him because jar Jar
- 30:24Speaker 2: Binks is one of the most maligned characters in cinema history,
- 30:29Speaker 2: and in his defense, he did I'm sure exactly what
- 30:33Speaker 2: George Lucas wanted him to do. I mean, he owned
- 30:36Speaker 2: that role. He was really good at performing this outlandish, silly,
- 30:42Speaker 2: amphibious character in the Star Wars universe, and most of
- 30:48Speaker 2: us hated it. So I kind of feel bad for
- 30:52Speaker 2: the guy. But he was still in Star Wars, which
- 30:54Speaker 2: is not, you know, the worst thing in life.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think Jarjar was in all three
- 31:00Speaker 1: of the prequels, wasn't.
- 31:01Speaker 2: He mm hmm.
- 31:02Speaker 1: I mean, so yeah, I don't. I don't feel too
- 31:04Speaker 1: terribly bad for him. And again I I I maintain this,
- 31:07Speaker 1: and I catch a lot of crap for it, but uh,
- 31:12Speaker 1: if you go back and watch the first three after
- 31:17Speaker 1: you've watched the last three, first three, ain't that bad?
- 31:22Speaker 1: Haanda Menace, banda Menace was not near as bad as
- 31:25Speaker 1: people thought after the crap of the last three, So
- 31:31Speaker 1: perspective is everything.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I also love the fan theory that came out of
- 31:35Speaker 2: the prequels in regards to jar Jar binks and that
- 31:40Speaker 2: jar Jar was not this amphibious simpleton uh from the
- 31:46Speaker 2: no whatever planet, but in fact he was Darth jar Jar.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I've never seen that one.
- 31:56Speaker 2: It's a solid one, dude. Look that up or look
- 31:59Speaker 2: that up. It's like, I don't know if it's actually
- 32:00Speaker 2: Darth jar Jar or dark jar Jar. But basically the
- 32:03Speaker 2: fan theory of uh, it's one of the great tricks
- 32:07Speaker 2: of the Sith is that they were able to infiltrate
- 32:11Speaker 2: this whole thing with an idiot character being played by
- 32:17Speaker 2: a Sith lord. Okay, I mean the first time I
- 32:22Speaker 2: saw an artist rendering of a Sith jar Jar, I
- 32:27Speaker 2: think I spit God knows what I was drinking right
- 32:30Speaker 2: out of my whole face.
- 32:32Speaker 1: I will have to look that one up.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Well, Gerald McCraney, who has come up a couple of
- 32:38Speaker 2: times recently here inside the Treehouse is seventy nine today.
- 32:44Speaker 1: How did we did? We talked about him? Is it
- 32:47Speaker 1: Major Dad that we were somehow talked about? A while back?
- 32:50Speaker 2: We talked about Major Dad? And I don't remember exactly
- 32:53Speaker 2: how Major Dad came up, but I do remember. I
- 32:56Speaker 2: think it was Meshach Taylor's birthday a couple of weeks ago,
- 33:00Speaker 2: which got us talking about designing women, which got us
- 33:02Speaker 2: talking about Delta Burke, and Delta Burke was married to
- 33:05Speaker 2: Gerald McCraney.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I feel like you're right, but I also feel like
- 33:09Speaker 1: somehow eighties ninety sitcoms came up in Major Dad.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Because it was two separate conversations.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think you had said you had Well,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I'd never watched Major Dad. It was kind of outside
- 33:22Speaker 1: of my wheelhouse.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Peter Gallagher is seventy one, best known for projects like
- 33:29Speaker 2: The OC While You Were Sleeping American Beauty. He's the
- 33:33Speaker 2: actor with those really big, black, bushy eyebrows.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I know.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Kevin Dylan is sixty one, best known as Johnny Drama
- 33:45Speaker 2: on Entourage. Also the younger brother of Matt Dillon, Kira Sedgwick,
- 33:50Speaker 2: the Emmy winning star of the Closer Singles, and Brooklyn
- 33:53Speaker 2: ninety nine is sixty one. She's also married to one
- 33:56Speaker 2: Kevin Bacon, so when she plays six degrees at Kevin Bacon,
- 33:59Speaker 2: she's always on top. Matthew Perry would have been fifty seven.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Didn't His drug dealer just gets sentenced a while back.
- 34:10Speaker 2: To anyone that had a finger in any of his
- 34:13Speaker 2: stuff all going to prison, the dealer, his doctor, his assistant,
- 34:19Speaker 2: I mean everyone they followed the chain of pills that
- 34:22Speaker 2: he died from. Anyone that came in near contact with
- 34:26Speaker 2: those pills is going to prison.
- 34:28Speaker 1: What they call the ketamine Queen.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Yeah. John Stamos is sixty three and still looking damn good.
- 34:38Speaker 1: You know, it's funny. I didn't think they got along,
- 34:41Speaker 1: and then I saw a TikTok the other day of him,
- 34:45Speaker 1: Dave Cooyer, Candice Beret.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Now I know what was Cameron?
- 34:55Speaker 1: Cameron? And is it Jodie Sweeten. I didn't think they
- 35:02Speaker 1: really spoke, but they were doing a TikTok together, and I.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Was like, well, well that's fun to know. Good for them.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I'm pretty sure it's If you see Dave
- 35:11Speaker 2: Coolier doing a TikTok with Atlantis Moors set, then send
- 35:14Speaker 2: me that one.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, then Hell's Frozen over.
- 35:20Speaker 2: As Atlantis Morris Set skates over it.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean there are there are two people that
- 35:29Speaker 1: I feel like had albums based on them, where like
- 35:35Speaker 1: Atlantis Moore Set, Jagged Little Pill is just for the
- 35:39Speaker 1: most part of Giant f You Today of Koya, I.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Think that is where we get the term scorched Earth well,
- 35:46Speaker 2: but also goes back to the Civil War. But as
- 35:49Speaker 2: far as musically scorched Earth set, that's far back even
- 35:54Speaker 2: before then.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Yeah. But the other one that I don't really goes
- 35:59Speaker 1: under the radar, and this was even worse because he
- 36:02Speaker 1: had to endure it still does. But Tragic Kingdom, the
- 36:08Speaker 1: No Doubt, that hit No Doubt album, that's all Gwen
- 36:12Speaker 1: Stefani's writing about the Tony guy that's the bass player,
- 36:16Speaker 1: that they were in a romanded relationship and then broke up.
- 36:19Speaker 1: I mean, that whole album is just a giant fuck you,
- 36:24Speaker 1: just everything.
- 36:25Speaker 2: That's got to be one of the most amazing conflicts
- 36:28Speaker 2: of interest I have ever seen, because because for him,
- 36:32Speaker 2: it's really a bittersweet thing because on one hand, this
- 36:36Speaker 2: is really important relationship in his life that turned south,
- 36:40Speaker 2: and that's bad enough, but then it's made worse by
- 36:43Speaker 2: the fact that it's with a bandmate. And then it's
- 36:45Speaker 2: made worse by the fact that it's with a bandmate
- 36:46Speaker 2: who's the front person for the band and the mega
- 36:49Speaker 2: star from the band. And then it's made worse by
- 36:51Speaker 2: the fact that while she's singing at you and not
- 36:55Speaker 2: just about you, you're also making buckets of money on it,
- 37:00Speaker 2: so that he.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Broke up with her. But yeah, that's got to be.
- 37:04Speaker 1: He was set for the rest of his life, because
- 37:08Speaker 1: this is back in the day when when that came out,
- 37:10Speaker 1: one hit album, you were set for life. And you know,
- 37:15Speaker 1: you look at that. I mean they just did a
- 37:16Speaker 1: residency at the Sphere. I mean they sold out every night.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Everything else, but yeah, that whole album is her morning grieving,
- 37:24Speaker 1: hating you, and you had to not only you, you
- 37:29Speaker 1: had to play it every night. I mean, there's the
- 37:33Speaker 1: one clip when when Fleetwood Mac did one of their
- 37:38Speaker 1: concerts and it's you know, Stevie Nicks, Oh god, whatever
- 37:42Speaker 1: song she wrote about Lindsay Buckingham, and everyone's like, oh
- 37:46Speaker 1: my god. You know, she's just scorching him. No one
- 37:49Speaker 1: remembers that he wrote a song about her thirty years prior.
- 37:53Speaker 1: They had a very political relationship. But yeah, that one's
- 37:56Speaker 1: totally one sided, with no doubt of Gwen Stefani penned
- 37:59Speaker 1: and a highre album just.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Effing you, just abacrating him. Yes, yes, and and and
- 38:07Speaker 2: then they have to go on tour to promote the album,
- 38:10Speaker 2: and she could just look at him and then meanwhile
- 38:12Speaker 2: he's like, every every strum of these strings goes right
- 38:18Speaker 2: to my bank. Hate me all you want. That's That's
- 38:26Speaker 2: one of those things where I've never met, no doubt.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I was at the Addison Improv at the same time
- 38:31Speaker 2: they were one night where they got ushered into the
- 38:34Speaker 2: back or whatever. But if I ever had the opportunity
- 38:39Speaker 2: to interview them, I don't think I could help it.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I'd be like, so, what was that?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Like? How awkward was that?
- 38:49Speaker 2: Are we all good? Now?
- 38:51Speaker 1: Weird? When you were recording that and you start you
- 38:54Speaker 1: started reading the lyrics, what was that like?
- 38:57Speaker 2: What were your initial impressions? Let's talk about that.

- 40:04Speaker 2: I'm Danny's trepe. I don't normally do this, but there's
- 40:08Speaker 2: a few other birthdays. There is a few other birthdays
- 40:10Speaker 2: that are so prominent we need to actually mention them.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Otherwise I'm going to feel like we've left too much
- 40:14Speaker 2: meat on the birthday bone. Before we touch on those,
- 40:20Speaker 2: we might have time to get into the flock camera misreads.
- 40:25Speaker 2: So I was checking out some of the comments on
- 40:27Speaker 2: our Patreon, some of our Patreon subscribers, some of our
- 40:30Speaker 2: treehouse plus subscribers were pointing out some of the issues
- 40:33Speaker 2: that have arisen from flock camera usage. Hopefully we'll get
- 40:37Speaker 2: time for that today. If not, we'll touch on it tomorrow.
- 40:43Speaker 2: But the other important birthdays that I want to mention
- 40:46Speaker 2: for today, August nineteenth, twenty twenty six, Former President Bill
- 40:54Speaker 2: Clinton is eighty. I think it's always important to mention
- 40:59Speaker 2: one of the one of the alive presidents, especially when
- 41:02Speaker 2: we were talking about Ann Richards earlier in the heyday
- 41:05Speaker 2: of the nineties. In politics, I'm not even sure where
- 41:08Speaker 2: Bill Clinton would land on the political spectrum. If you
- 41:11Speaker 2: plucked him out of the nineties and drop him into today,
- 41:13Speaker 2: he might be mid middle Democrat. No, Bill, you go left, conservative, go.
- 41:20Speaker 1: You go look at Bill Clinton's policies and what Listen,
- 41:27Speaker 1: let me say this, Bill Clinton is the greatest president
- 41:32Speaker 1: of my lifetime. I say that as I generally am conservative,
- 41:38Speaker 1: but Bill Clinton greatest president of our lifetime. Part of
- 41:41Speaker 1: that is in ninety four when Contract with America New
- 41:45Speaker 1: Ginghriig came about. Bill Clinton was a pragmatic politician. And
- 41:49Speaker 1: you look at what those Congresses got done, what they
- 41:53Speaker 1: did from everything from welfare reform to spend you know,
- 41:57Speaker 1: they actually adopted a deal that said for every dollar,
- 42:02Speaker 1: you know, you increase in spending, you need to cut
- 42:04Speaker 1: a dollar of spending, you know, and you actually had
- 42:08Speaker 1: surpluses in the late nineties, a booming economy, everything else.
- 42:11Speaker 1: But you go look at it where Bill Clinton stands
- 42:14Speaker 1: on so many things. He would very much be conservative
- 42:18Speaker 1: in today's Yeah, and still he people forget, you know,
- 42:27Speaker 1: saxophone on our Sineo Hall. He he was cool. He
- 42:31Speaker 1: wasn't Obama cool, but he was cool.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Obama ran because Bill Clinton walked As far as the
- 42:40Speaker 2: cool factor, It's like he kind of opened that door
- 42:43Speaker 2: a little bit and that made it to where we
- 42:45Speaker 2: were like, wait a minute, our president can be kind
- 42:47Speaker 2: of cool all of a sudden, All right, I'm here
- 42:49Speaker 2: for it.
- 42:49Speaker 1: And then yeah, and again I've said this, I feel
- 42:54Speaker 1: like I said it recently of boy, would it be
- 42:57Speaker 1: the would it be nice that the worst problems we
- 42:59Speaker 1: have right now where the president got a BJ in
- 43:01Speaker 1: the Oval office.
- 43:03Speaker 2: You know what, I'm on my knees begging for those
- 43:05Speaker 2: days when that was the biggest controversy. Oh so h
- 43:14Speaker 2: old slick. Willie turns eighty today, Happy birthday of the
- 43:18Speaker 2: forty second president. By the way, which, by the way,
- 43:23Speaker 2: also reminds me of how great Phil Hartman was on
- 43:25Speaker 2: Saturday Night Live when he would play Bill Clinton. One
- 43:30Speaker 2: of my favorites was when because this was back when
- 43:34Speaker 2: SNL was also great, Like I Sweart of got everything
- 43:36Speaker 2: was better in the nineties. I still remember one of
- 43:39Speaker 2: the bits they did with Phil Hartman as President Clinton
- 43:42Speaker 2: on one of his jogs through Washington Z through Washington,
- 43:46Speaker 2: d C. And he stops out at McDonald's and keeps
- 43:50Speaker 2: talking to people while eating all their mcmuffins.
- 43:57Speaker 1: One of the all time, all time great pictures, and
- 44:03Speaker 1: this just goes to show you is that no matter
- 44:04Speaker 1: how how high you are in the world, you can
- 44:09Speaker 1: be absolute crap. And that is This is after the
- 44:13Speaker 1: Monica Lewinsky thing came out. And it is a picture
- 44:16Speaker 1: of Hillary, Chelsea, Bill and the dog leaving Marine one
- 44:23Speaker 1: and it's Hillary and Chelsea walking ahead. Then the dog
- 44:27Speaker 1: then Bill, because that is that is his position. Yeah,
- 44:40Speaker 1: you are the leader of the free world, but you
- 44:43Speaker 1: are in the doghouse.
- 44:48Speaker 2: It's a good thing you're president, buddy, because otherwise you're
- 44:53Speaker 2: ass would be walking yeah on the Greyhound, not Marine one. O. God,
