- Chesla Wechsler: And who doesn't Carol: like Chesla Wechsler: let a person finish a love letter? Carol: Yeah, yeah. Gabriela: Yeah. Mel: That's been my point this entire Gabriela: Exactly. Mel: time. who does that? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. Let me stop you right there. Yeah. Ca can I stop you there? Carol: Yeah. Mel: Yeah, you're pouring your heart out, but let me stop you. Chesla Wechsler: So this podcast Portwenn episode covers Best Medicine Season two, Episode Five. Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow. Carol, Mel, Gabriela,, and I will gush I mean, discuss about it. Doug is on special podcast Portwenn assignment tonight. So come through and welcome back to Podcast Portwenn. What an episode Did you guys feel did you feel the same way I did? Like you just I mean you just wanted to talk about it right away. Gabriela: Yeah. Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Now Gabriela,, Carol: Most definitely. Chesla Wechsler: you jumped probably right onto Discord the whole time, right? Gabriela: yeah. I'm always on Discord. we have a little reaction channel, so we all put our our censored reaction Mel: Yeah. I'm usually Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: on there. Mel: I'm usually on there as well, but tonight I was on there as I was watching in and Gabriela was responding back to me, so which was nice because I wasn't just you know sending things out into the void. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. You need you need that feedback. Gabriela: A lot of people watch like on Hulu or or like a couple days later Mel: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Gabriela: and I'm like I don't want them to like experience it on their own, so Chesla Wechsler: Good for you. That's why this whole podcast exists really, is to give people a place to chat about it, even if they're not talking at the time, but they see us chatting about it and then they can participate in the comments, which, you know, people have commented that it's it's serving that purpose for them, so yay. Yay us. So why don't we get started? lots of different plot arcs. Anybody want to take the lead? Mel: I I guess I'll start with I I actually liked how they handled the Eden and Martin situation. They didn't make her I mean, I I actually felt bad for her when she realized that she never stood a chance. I was like, well, poor Eden. but I like how they they did not do what I didn't want them to do. They did not go to the, you know, the the the witch who feels like she has to you know try to win him over or be manipulative. and I I found it interesting. There was there actually turned out to be a little bit of a variation of what I said last week. She didn't give Louisa the letter, she read Louisa the letter, which so Louisa still heard the entire thing, which is what I ultimately wanted, was for her to finally hear the entire thing. So I'm curious Chesla Wechsler: the and Mel: where that goes. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, and and to your point, both of us had a theory on how we might want it to go, Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: and neither one of them was the case. But the end result was the same, which was Louisa learned what was in the letter, which is what we wanted. Mel: Right. I'm also glad that Martin didn't string her along. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: you know, he didn't pretend he once he realized she had the letter, he was he was he finally came clean with her. Like that wasn't for you. And you Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Mel: could tell he felt, you know, he felt bad about it because he knew what he was gonna say was gonna hurt her. but you know, and and and I thought her reaction was very, you know, real of, you know, you like this this man who re realizes he doesn't share the same feelings for you. Chesla Wechsler: But he did try to make it be like it was nothing though, which surprised me when he said that was months ago, you know, right? I was kind of surprised Mel: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Me too. Me too. Chesla Wechsler: that he was trying to hold on to Eden because didn't you guys get the sense that, you know, whether he held on to her or not was not necessarily making him happy? Gabriela,, you have a thought about that? Gabriela: Yeah, I just you can kinda just tell in every episode that they're in that he's content, but it's not making him happily happy, as much as he probably wants to be. And yeah, I also felt bad for Eden just 'cause I mean I've always liked her character. and obviously not with Martin, but I did feel bad for her that She thought that letter was his. I mean that letter was hers. And yeah, I thought it was funny when she just started reading it to Louisa and Louisa's just like internally panicking because she knows it's not for her. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: But yeah, I'm also glad that Martin like was just like honest with her. It was like that wasn't for you. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: I also liked his answer when Eden was like, Why Louisa, why her? And he's just like, I just don't have an answer for you. And I'm like, that's like the best that's the best answer he he could give her. because we also don't know why, because he hasn't really expressed that yet. And so Chesla Wechsler: Right. Gabriela: Yeah. I did feel bad for her, but has to happen for the story to move along. Chesla Wechsler: Yes, I agree. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: What'd you think, Carol? Carol: Well, I think Eden is a comfortable place for him in that she understands his work. She too is very awkward in social situations and how they deal with things and their bluntness. So I think he does she was that comfort zone for him that other people didn't get. The very first episode of season one where they were Louisa and he were in the little grocery store, and you know, she's like, Aren't you supposed to marry the person that, makes you weak in the knees when you kiss him and stuff? And he sa just didn't seem to know what that was like. And then also, when Elaine's mother was getting married and she was complaining about Dum Dum and why him and all this stuff. And Martin says, love is blind. And that could just be, love is blind. But they work together good as a team when it comes time to deal with like the townsfolks and stuff like the previous episode. And it's just like they get each other at a level that nobody else gets each other. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Carol: That's in their lives. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And she was trying to be so helpful. she was really working with him on the phobia and trying to get him desensitized to the blood. and he and also talking to the monitor, like Martin, this person holds your fate in her hands. why are you trying to alienate this person? So I I still believe she was working not just because she wanted him to come to Boston with her. I think she really cared about him. thought that they were a good match, and was trying to get him over the phobia. Now, she probably had a poor opinion of Port Wenn, right? And just wanted to get him out of this podunk town. But I th I thought she cared about him. But now, you know? In Walks Parker. Yeah. Gabriela: Not a few. Carol: Gabriela's favorite character of last night. Chesla Wechsler: Yes, yes, yes. Gabriela: He's too charming. It's off-putting. Chesla Wechsler: Heh heh heh. Gabriela: Yeah, I think when we like first saw that like sneak peek clip before the episode aired, it was like, okay, I can see why Louisa might like him or whatever. And then just as we got like more throughout the episode, I was there's just something off about him. Yeah, I don't know what it is about him. I just get weird vibes. Yeah. I call him the Hallm the Hallmark Man because he's straight out of a Hallmark movie. And Which isn't a bad thing, but it's not a good thing for Port Wenn, I think. And Martin also seems to kind of like him. So Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: Yeah, I'm interested to see how that confrontation goes with Louisa and she's gonna handle that and if that's gonna affect Martin how Martin treats the monitor or vice versa and if that will affect Chesla Wechsler: Hmm. Gabriela: anything. Chesla Wechsler: The monitor certainly seemed to respect Martin, right? he's got this great re he's a legend in Boston and I'll I'll Gabriela: Mm. Chesla Wechsler: be out of your way. I'll learn something from you. So that things were starting to get I thought on a decent plane. Carol, what'd you think? Carol: Kiss up. Chesla Wechsler: Could be. Carol: You know, when Chesla Wechsler: Could be. Carol: you start out giving all those platitudes and stuff, it's like, do you have an ulterior motive here? I mean, I don't know what it would be if he did, but kind of like Gabriela,, it's like, you know, what what's your what what are you doing here, buddy? I mean, I know you're Chesla Wechsler: What didn't he Carol: a monitor, but but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Didn't he meet Louisa before he met Martin? Yeah. Gabriela: Mm-hmm I find it interesting that he's Carol: Yes. Gabriela: try that his first the first impression he tries to make on people that he meets is like charm them right away. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: so with like Louisa obviously the flirting, but with Martin it's like, you're a legend, I can learn something from you. Like that is pretty interesting to note, I think. Chesla Wechsler: invite or Louisa invited his charm, right, by saying, How can I have you? or whatever it was Mel, what'd you think about that? Mel: That scene was so funny. And I I loved how she just played off the awkwardness and let's try this again. Cause I would have just, probably run away. Chesla Wechsler: Who Carol: Yeah. Mel: But that accent just yeah, I just can't, you know, that British accent just gets you every time. Chesla Wechsler: Do British men know that? All American women? Mel: Yeah, I think they do. I think they do. Carol: Mm. Chesla Wechsler: Gosh. Mel: it's yeah, but beyond that I can I can I can see Gabriela's point. I mean I I actually thought their interactions were very sweet. and I thought that date was very, very, you know, nice, really well thought out. And he seems to be a lot more fun, which obviously is very different from Martin as well. from what we've seen of Martin, I should say. But I think Gabriela, does make some good points that Yeah, maybe he is too charming. Maybe there is an ultra not an ulterior motive, but just like you like she was saying, you know, too charming. but we'll see. I think I mean as a as a plot device, I think it it it works because it's It's gonna h hopefully, push Martin to make a make a a a move again, especially s now that Louisa knows the full contents of that letter. You know, she knows how he feels, even though Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mel: he messed up. so it it may and now that Eden's gone, there's nothing to keep him from that except for Parker. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Now Parker uses the word that I think we're all thinking of with respect to him, but it may not be the first word that comes to our mind is smarmy. Yeah, it's a word I didn't know until I watched Doc Martin and it was used in there and I was like, you know, you look it up and it's like Yeah, yeah, just a little too over the top, sweet, charming something. So who knows? But that that, you know, you've got the whole she spent the night with him. I I don't think they were playing Monopoly. Carol: Yeah. Mel: No. Carol: That scene was so funny when they tossed the hoodie or jacket over out of the window. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: I got nothing. Mel: That's what was hap I couldn't figure out why she was Carol: Yeah. Mel: down in that like in there, in the bushes. okay, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: that makes more sense. He was staying at the salt at the he's staying at the Salty Breeze, and she was there with him. Okay. I just assume Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And she, I think, jumped out the window because she couldn't Carol: Yeah. Mel: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: get out the front door and then she's trying to pretend like she just w walked around the back like but no. And then he Mel: Right, right. Okay, I that makes that makes so much more sense now 'cause I I just assume they spent the night on the boat, but that makes so much more sense now. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And I thought he was cute, falling into the water so that she would save him 'cause you you kinda Yeah, I mean that that worked. That was cute. It was a very playful date. I'm fine with them together, but I kind of agree with you that like it can't last. Like he's there to make something happen. Carol: I agree. Mel: Yeah. And I I think sh I I I have a feeling too, I'd be curious to see what once he observes the two once he sees the two of them together, Martin and Louisa, whether he notices anything. like Eden did, Eden noticed that, Martin had a thing with Eden or with Eden with Louisa. so I'm curious to see how he's gonna react and he when he he sees the two of them interacting. Because they never really interacted together in front of him in this episode. Chesla Wechsler: That's true. Yeah, that'll be interesting. I want to talk about Paul and Sunny and the whole main plot where this poor man loses his wife and that's obviously the the major thing that we need to talk about, but with respect to that I'd like to talk about Al and Elaine first. What did you guys think of that interaction? 'Cause that seemed a little strange to me. Gabriela: I thought at first it was strange. I was like, why are they both acting kind of weird? and then I think like later on it made more sense. Like Al was avoiding going to the Salty Breeze, with Elaine 'cause he didn't want to feel sad because he thought the or the husband losing Sunny made him think of losing Elaine and he like Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: can't bear that thought. So I thought like, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: okay, that makes sense. And then Elaine I think Elaine's reaction was a little bit maybe too I don't know, like I don't wanna say dramatic, but it was just a little bit too much. I was like, why are you Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: so mad at him? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: I guess yeah, I don't know, maybe it brought stuff up about like her dad and she wants someone who's like gonna show up for her when things Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Gabriela: are hard and so I get both of their sides, but it was a little weird at the beginning. I was like, Why are they so angry at each other? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah, it it I and I thought to me it seemed like I didn't understand yeah, I did I just did they were relating in a weir really weird way, almost to the point that I thought that maybe Al was gonna spring something on her I don't want you to come to New York. I really couldn't quite figure out why their dynamic was so odd. Mel: I I think it had to do with so I think it's little bit what what Gabriela said is that I think Elaine's reaction was the reaction of somebody who's lost somebody important to them and knows what that feels like. And she, she feels the need to be there to comfort that person having experienced a loss, a loss. where, we talked last time about Al may not, He he may not even remember his mother. I don't know. So Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: he may not have that same perspective. And he's just and and I do think he he it made it reminded him of possibly losing Elaine. But I think it also is like, well, it's depressing. Like I I don't, you know, I don't want to be around it. and and I I think it it's understandable. I mean, anybody who hasn't experienced the loss of somebody tends to try to avoid heavy situations like that. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mel: And I think that's what Al was doing, where Elaine was coming from the perspective of having lost somebody. And the two were just at, you know, cross with each other. and they were coming at it from different different angles. I was at initially I was thinking that they might actually get to the discussion about Al's mother because my initial thought was that he kind of like Martin, he was just avoiding discussing anything related to like. the loss of somebody in grief and Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: and that h it was his way of avoiding that, but they didn't they didn't really seem to go there with that. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I didn't understand the whole I wanted to see what kind of man you were. alm almost like this was like a test for Al. It it just it just struck me as odd. Well Carol, what'd you think? Carol: Yeah, I thought it was pretty weird as well. And my initial thought was, when he bought the sheets and they were trying to pick out paint colors for the walls. It's like is he almost kinda backing out of wanting to go to New York and and to school. So, I just I don't know why I got that vibe from that, but I just kinda got does he really want to go? But yeah, I agree. That whole in Chesla Wechsler: He was he was tossing himself into home decorating for the dorm room, which was interesting. Carol: Yeah. So I I don't know, he was that was a strange interaction 'til they finally realized that or she realized she was gonna take him however he was because she didn't wanna waste any time that they had together. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: So yeah, just weird. Chesla Wechsler: okay. I also was thinking Al was standing like Martin did when he gets hugged, right? He was just keeping his arms down at his side and I thought, if he's so worried about losing Elaine, why is he not like super clingy? You know, so the e the explanation at the end kind of made sense, but he wasn't clingy during I would have thought he'd be clingy the whole time, but anyway, that's just me. So now We've got our main ar arc. We've got Martin having absolutely no idea how to deal with a man who is grieving. he's he's he's looking for every possible explanation for this guy's behavior except the one that's staring him in the face. Who would like to go first? Gabriela: I guess I could go first. just 'cause yeah, I found it so interesting when he every time he was like he saw the husband, he was kind of like looking for something that was wrong. for the way that he was acting. and he was like kind of like Talking to himself like I I did everything right. I'm calm, I Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: did everything right. I checked everything, you know. Throughout the episode he was kind of doing that, which I found really interesting. it's kind of almost like maybe he was kind of feeling guilty about it, or like maybe putting blame on himself, and I was like, Okay, maybe there's something there. Than maybe about Rosemary or something. And Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: but yeah, and then I I really liked Aunt Sarah in this episode. Just her like emotion. Annie Potts' emotion was really good. just kind of like pleading with Martin to understand what's going on. And Martin just like can't comprehend that he's that this is the way that this man is grieving. Chesla Wechsler: And that it's normal. Gabriela: It is normal and and he all he experienced that himself. He just kind of repressed that memory. he was also young, so maybe he really doesn't remember too much, but Aunt Sarah definitely let him remember that. And that was really heartbreaking. Yeah, just bringing Rosemary Mel: What do you mean? Gabriela: toys and talking to her, eating waffles even though he doesn't like waffles. Like that's just Chesla Wechsler: Dressing in her clothes. Gabriela: Yeah, dressing in her clothes. It's just that's so heartbreaking. Especially I don't know, just that whole story was heartbreaking. And for Aunt Sarah to witness that like Witness that for Martin as a kid and then witnessing that with this husband who lost Sunny and Martin is like so caught up in Something being wrong with him when she knows it's like like that's that that was how you acted when you were a kid. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol, what did you think about that? Carol: Yeah, it I agree, Aunt Sarah was stellar in the show last night. and I think, you know, he was young enough and he probably also put a lot of that out of his mind, especially with parents that seemed to not want to talk about it, so he learned to to bury a lot of that from then. So it's sad that this happened, but it also I think opened up the door a little bit for him to start that grieving process that he's Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: not been able to do. And the parents obviously for the mother who was a was psychiatrist with a brutally honest Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Radic yeah, radical honesty. Mm. Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol: And how she handled that with that being her way of handling people that why didn't she brutally honestly deal with it then and just, you know Chesla Wechsler: One thought I've had about that is sometimes when people experience a big psychological trauma in their lives, they decide to go study something in a field. And last year we were talking about how maybe Vanessa had not done the psychiatry or psychology thing before Rosemary died, but went back to school. And we don't know that. That's just you know, who Carol: Yeah. Yeah. Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: knows? But that's something. Mel: It it could also be that she had a medical degree or a s maybe wasn't psychologist and you know eventually moved into the you know radical honesty stuff as a like a grief response. But I would hope that if she was some sort of psychologist, and even you know, that's what I think always surprises me about that is if she was some sort of psychologist, psychiatrist, so something with mental health, either before or even after what happened with Rosemary. The fact that they just it's that they just didn't talk about it, it almost seems like there that I I I almost wonder how much of that was Robert. Like it seems like Vanessa would have been more willing to talk about it, but Robert wouldn't. And so it almost seems like just for you know to keep the peace in the house because as a you know trained mental health practitioner, I think she would understand whether she was trained before or after. She would understand the need to talk about it in order to work through it and how the different ways that grief manifests itself, including you know, burying it. And but also she would understand that that's not a healthy way of dealing with grief. but it's also possible that she had the reality of what you know intellectually and what your, you know, what your emotions and your heart are telling you, and then maybe a husband who refuses to deal with it and a a a child who's just you know and she can't, you know, she's having a hard time processing. So, you know, there there's all sorts of things wrapped up in that. I mean, I think it's easiest easy for us to say, she should have known better, but she probably did, but she just couldn't put it into practice with her own family. Carol: Well, it's one thing to walk somebody else through so going through something like that, but when it actually hits you personally, Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol: you're coming at it from a different angle, I would think. Mel: Yeah. You no longer have that dispassionate view of of it. You're suddenly, you know, in it. Carol: Yeah, you're in the throes of it. Mel: Right. Chesla Wechsler: And it I don't know how many people who are watching this now used to watch the podcast, but I gave a little public service announcement in the in the Robert Best, Vanessa Best episode, what, episode nine, I guess. I'll put a link to it somewhere. But yeah, my dad had three kids, lost his wife, remarried, had me, and his way of dealing with losing his wife in a car accident was to tell each child that their mother had died in a car accident the night that it happened and then never talk about it again. And to him, he was giving them a gift. Like he what he had found was if I just put it in a box and lock it away, it doesn't hurt as much. And this is what we're going to do as a family, which is, you know, not not recommended. so I'm not sure if Carol: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Is that what Robert might have done and Vanessa just followed along? Or I still maintain that as as Gabriela, had mentioned in this episode of the podcast, like when Martin keeps saying things like, I know I checked everything, I know I checked everything, does he have some sort of of guilt about something that we we know he shouldn't have any guilt about this? I mean, the woman was dead, right? It's nothing he couldn't fix anything. I mean, if she had the bite from the rabbit, he gave like everything was fine. and looking back at season one when we see so many things that are like, Martin, what did you do? Martin, what have you done now? I just feel in my gut that he had something to do with the accident, not intentionally, obviously six years old, right? But in some way, shape, or form, something he did or said, or failed to do, or failed to say, resulted in that accident and Parents couldn't they're grieving their daughter and they probably have a great deal of who knows, anger, whatever towards their son. So maybe they can't be with their son right now. they think it's better to be s like, who knows? But there's so much to work with here. And I just I really go writers. I'm I'm counting on ya to like Mel: Yeah. Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: do good things here. Gabriela: Yeah. Mel: I you you bring up a really good point, Chesla?, that, you know, and at at that young of an age, I mean, it could have been easy anything. He could have, you know, spilled the drink. He could have jumped on, you know, something. You know, who knows at that age. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: he could have just, you know, all it takes, as we all know, is, you know, take your eyes off the road for a minute and yeah, getting distracted by something going in the back. They could have been fighting back there, you know, who knows? Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mel: and you know, the parent whoever was driving you know looked back and that was that. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yep. Mel: but I also think that what I interesting is when somebody you know dies passes away unexpectedly whether it's accident, car accident, some sort of unexpected or before their time, I think that that complicates things because not only do you have the grief, but I think you also have the trauma of that Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: that you're dealing with. So it's almost like a there's like a trauma response as well. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, I agree. Mel: And that's what he's dealing that's what they're all dealing with as well. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Lots to work with. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Right. So at the end. You when Aunt Sarah tells him all the things that he did about Rosemary, y kudos to Josh Charles. I mean, you just saw him like trying to hold it together. And then he sees Louisa and given given my family situation, I have trouble with expressing grief or allowing myself to feel really anything. I always call myself the cheerful Martin Ellingham because it's like I've got all the same walls that he does, I'm just smiling. but when he goes outside, in essence he sees his a person he feels safe with. And I betcha he can't even put that into words that that's why he could just lose it with Louisa. But that's I think that's what he's doing, is like there's somebody that I can actually just let those down. And my god. That's why that's why last night I had to jump on Instagram with a reaction video, which I never Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: do. I watched it again and I'm like, man, I am just I have such resting bitch face when I just talk to the camera and I don't have people in front of me. Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But anyway. Sorry folks, that I frowned at you the whole time there, but Yeah. Yeah, that was that was something something else. What do you guys think about that? That was his safe person? Gabriela: Yeah. I Carol: yeah. Gabriela: think Louisa like the moment he saw Louisa, it was just that's the person who brings me comfort. So that's the person that's just gonna catch me when I fall. And I think I also relate to that 'cause I'm kinda I was always like the person who didn't show my emotions either. so I relate to Martin in that way. And especially like grieving. I remember like someone passing away and I w could not cry as a kid. And then I saw like my aunt that I was really close to and I just started like sobbing once she's like Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: hugged me. And I like, that's literally what happened with Martin and Louisa. so it is like It is I don't know, I found it very real and very like heartbreaking for Martin, but it's also like such a meaningful moment for the two of them. but yeah, it was a good scene. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I have to admit I was cheering the writers because when I watched it the second time and and then he just falls into her arms and sobs. It would have been so easy for them to write a line like, I've gotcha, I've gotcha or something like that. And they didn't. They left it out. They l and that less is more. I thought that was perfect. Mel: Yeah. The writers handled I the entire arc of yeah, loss and grief. I I felt like it was done very well. There was none of this. initially the people at the Salty Breeze were like, What is what is wrong with this person? But then, but there was still no there was still no judgment of of of really the only person that was like, There's gotta be something wrong with him is was Martin, where everybody else was, I think, more curious. Chesla Wechsler: Course Mark wanted to arrest him 'cause he was the husband and the husband always does it in a Mary Higgins Clark book. Mel: Right, right, right. Carol: Yeah. Mel: Well, he's not wrong. mean, even outside of Chesla Wechsler: He's not running. Mel: Mar Mary Higgins Clark, it usually is husband but Chesla Wechsler: And statistically speaking, in real life, it's typically Mel: That's what I'm saying. Yeah. It's the it's the it's the sp the significant other, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: oftentimes. Chesla Wechsler: And I want to give a hat tip to Jack DiFalco the guy who played Paul, Gabriela: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: the magician. because on multiple levels, not only was his his grief very good, right? But you know, here you are, you're an actor, so your whole job is to look like an look like the person who you are, right? So you're acting normally, but you have to play a magician, and magicians tend to be very campy and Mel: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: and I thought he did the whole campy thing very well. so yeah, I I I hat tipped him. I've not seen him in other things, but I thought he thought he was very good. yeah, so good good old Mark. he had some some very fun Mel: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: scenes in this, but let's let's just jump to the scene at the end when Eden is leaving town. Carol, you've got a big smile. What do you think of that? Gabriela: Too funny. Carol: Well, that was hilarious. And when sh he admits he's got a lot of khaki, it's like, my goodness. It's like Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: I didn't see it coming, but it was so much fun. And it's like Eden. You know, sh Chesla Wechsler: Rebound. Carol: Yeah. You know, she's kinda this proper you you kinda stay within your social circles, your same intellect level and all that kind of stuff. And here she is with the sheriff that can't even carry a taser gun and Gabriela: Yeah. Carol: gets in the back seat. Chesla Wechsler: That's right. That's what I presume, right? But I like, you know, you're just trying to get out of a ticket? no, write me up. You write up that ticket. I'm writing you up. I'm writing you up right here. Carol: Yeah. Gabriela: Mm-hmm. Carol: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: why? Carol: Yeah. That was a good way to to Mel: Mm-hmm. Carol: kinda end things on that level. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: With with Martin and and Eden for sure. And I'll tell ya, the scene in the bar with George and Greg talking at the same time, that was so well done. Gabriela: Yeah. Mel: It was. Carol: I put on the closed caption to try and follow it and I had to watch that several times to pick up on who was saying what and Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: you know, here's old George, you didn't tell us. You ne you never told us this. It's like Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And who doesn't Gabriela: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: let a person finish a love letter? Carol: Yeah, yeah. Gabriela: Yeah. Mel: That's been my point this entire Gabriela: Exactly. Mel: time. who does that? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. Let me stop you right there. Yeah. Ca can I stop you there? Carol: Yeah. Mel: Yeah, you're pouring your heart out, but let me stop you. Chesla Wechsler: Yes, yes. Carol: Just somebody that doesn't want to give the other one permission to love them, I guess. I don't know. They they sure keep pawning off e well not pawning, but giving each other permission to like back away from Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And talk past each other, Carol: But that was so funny. I bet it was on the floor on that one. Mel: That w that wasn't very funny. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. Well that it was funny I was watching it with my husband Chris and he just cracked up through the whole thing and I'm like, I really wanted to hear what they were saying. He was laughing so loud I couldn't hear what they were saying and and he's like, Well you could rewind it. I'm like, but I I can't yet because I need to see what happens next. So when the first commercial came I'm like Wha what were they saying? That was it was a great episode. Mel: I was just gonna say to Carol that putting on the closed caption was actually a really good idea. I never I didn't think to do that. That's actually a really Chesla Wechsler: See Carol: Yeah. Mel: good idea. Carol: And and it's Chesla Wechsler: y you're not Carol: even hard to follow with that because they are both talking so fast Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: that you just kind of have to concentrate on one person and they're close captioning to get it. Chesla Wechsler: man. So certainly within this season, is this your favorite episode? Carol: Yeah, one of one of my favorites. Last week was a good one too. It Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. How does it rank overall? A lot what do you think between last week and this week, Carol? Carol: Well, I think they both had a lot of good storylines. But it just seems to me with each show, it just gets better and better. So I just you just get that, I can't wait for, seven o'clock mountain time to watch this t That's something I need to point out though, when he called her what a crackpot or crackhead or something, 'cause she was going to Colorado, it's like, hey now, wait a minute. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah right. Well she wanted to do cryogenics or whatever, and and and Eden is Carol: Yes. Chesla Wechsler: like, Yeah, freezing people. That's the big thing now. she's doing anything to try to get this woman to say Martin's fine and can go back to Boston. Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: what one person who commented on last week's episode, HeyJude1963, she was predicting that Martin and Louisa are gonna get together at some point this season, which I think we're all figuring that they will, and that she's gonna be pregnant, but not for nothing. do you think that's all gonna play out? Gabriela: I hope it doesn't play out. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: yeah. yeah, that would just be too complicated. I also think Parker's probably a short term arc. especially since he's from Boston. I mean it still could end up happening that she's pregnant with his baby, but I Chesla Wechsler: Right. Gabriela: don't know. I wouldn't like that. Yeah, we'll we'll see how that goes. Mel: we can also assume I'm I'm trying to keep it, G rated here, but we can also assume that they were responsible adults about the whole thing. So we can assume that too. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yes. One one one would hope. Yes. Yeah. But you know, Louisa wasn't even expecting to go on the date. And you know, she was not exactly taking the pill. Mel: No, but he might have yeah. Yeah. He was prepared, hopefully. And he's a doctor, so Chesla Wechsler: Hopefully he you know he he knew there was gonna be a date. Hopefully he Yeah. Yes, that's true. Yeah, he should be. Very important. Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Very important. yeah. So where do you think where do you think this is gonna go? Because we've got Eden and Mark. Could be a one night stand rebound kind of thing and and over. Or, you know He does call her a total babe, but She might like that. You know? Gabriela: Yeah, I think that's a I think personally that's a one time thing. I don't think she's coming back to Port Wenn after any of that. but yeah, I think Mark will eventually tell him and I'm interested I'm interested to see Martin's reaction to that. Like is he gonna care all that much? especially Chesla Wechsler: Did Mark break the brocode? I thought Mark broke the brocode. Gabriela: I don't know. That's It's I don't know. Mel: I mean, that's what he accused Martin of doing, but they Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mel: were broken up. And you know, they're broken up now too. So yeah, so. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I mean, you what's good for Gabriela: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: the goose is good for the gander, Or two ganders, I guess. Mel: Yeah. Gabriela: Wasn't I'm not mad about it. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: obviously Mark and Eden was like my random pairing, so I Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Gabriela: was very happy about that. Mel: I'm just like, you you go, Louisa. know, obviously. Carol: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: Okay. Mel: And that I did actually love that outfit that she was wearing for that that Gabriela: Me too. Mel: dinner. She that looked really nice on her. Chesla Wechsler: Mhm. I did notice that, and talk about like a random thing to notice, when she was on the boat, she had a belt on that she took off along with her top before she dove in the water. And when she left the Salty Breeze,, she didn't have her belt. So she had her hoodie. So is that sort of Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: missing article of clothing going to somehow come into things somewhere like, y you left this the other night and Martin witnesses it or something. Who knows? Might just be continuity police. Gabriela: Maybe she just forgot it on Carol: Well I noticed Gabriela: the boat. And then Chesla Wechsler: Or she has it in her purse. Carol: Yeah. Well it's kinda like Gabriela: That's what I assume. Carol: the hair ribbon she had on before she went into the water. Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Carol: it looked like it was in there pretty good, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Those things can come off when you dive into water. Hard to say. Carol: True. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Nope. So we think Mark and Eden is a one night stand thing. But and Gabriela, thinks Parker's got a short plot arc. I personally liked him, but I can also see the smarmy angle. Mel: Mm-hmm. Same. Chesla Wechsler: how do you think the Martin Parker thing's gonna go, Mel? Mel: Hmm. I mean, as somebody said earlier, he they seem to get along and Martin seems to like him. But I do think things are going to change once he realizes that Parker is with Louisa. even though they're not, you know, Martin and Louisa are not together, I do think a little bit of resentment or jealous jealousy may come out at that point. Chesla Wechsler: Do you think she'll stay with Parker? Or d or now that she one, knows that Eden's not in the picture anymore and two, that Martin is in such a fragile state. Mel: I think it they they're implying that she at least, continues dating him. I think she might. Because I I'm thinking, like I said, more what's gonna happen is that like I said, Parker's gonna see how Martin and Louisa interact and realize that he she's actually in love with with Martin and not Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Okay. Mel: with him. And that his you know, he the their dating is, you know, just a fling, I guess. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: And I mean maybe 'Cause I would assume his, his stint in Port Wenn is temporary anyway. So, for all we know, it was it was only just meant to be a little bit of a fling. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, true. True. Carol, did you notice in the previews that Savannah is back? Carol: Yeah. This is gonna be entertaining. Chesla Wechsler: I I thought she and Mark really kinda hit it off. Savannah's the woman who brought the exotic animal to town with the plague. Carol: Yep, she sure did. Yeah, this Gabriela: I think that also has to do with the other show that they were on together. They were a couple in that show. Chesla Wechsler: really? Gabriela: And so I think that's kind of transferring over to this show. Chesla Wechsler: Hmm. Gabriela: so they are a good a good actor wise good a good pairing on screen. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: but yeah, we'll see how that goes. I dunno I d I I'm surprised she's back. I think didn't she go to prison or something? Chesla Wechsler: But yeah, how long is how long is exotic animal prison? Gabriela: Five months apparently. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Right. Mel: I mean, I thought you though I thought it was Gabriela: Unless you got bailed out. Mel: like I thought it was like federal prison and I thought it was like a felony. I mean that's at least a year or should be. I would think. I don't know, but yeah, that's true. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, I don't know. I don't in this day and age, who knows? That's Carol: Yeah, good behavior got her out. Chesla Wechsler: right, that's right. Never never went to prison anyway. Mel: But you know, but Gabriela, has a good point. Of all the you know, of all the people to bring back, it's kinda interesting that they chose her. Like there there's even a couple of you know, a couple of people from the first episode episode that I'd love to have back. Maybe they will show up again. The mermaid. Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Yeah, the the mer the mermaid. We like the mermaid, Mel: Cecilia was her name. And then Chesla Wechsler: so see, yep, yes. Mel: I can't remember the care character or the actress's name, the woman with the who was smoking and blew up the houses. Carol: Andrea Martin. Chesla Wechsler: Andrea Martin, I hope she comes back. Yes, Judith. Yeah. Mel: Yes. So yes, Judith. Carol: Judith. Gabriela: Judy. Mel: those were the two two I would love to see back. But I never expected to see Savannah back again. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Well, we talked about her last season as somebody who we thought we'd like Mark like they seem to have chemistry and it would be good to Mel: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: good for Mark to have a love interest, so who knows, maybe that's Mel: Mm. Chesla Wechsler: you know, how they're acting upon that. I'll tell you, based on the stuff that happened in episode five and the stuff that Katrina Ann wrote, she wrote a great analysis and a comment on the episode four stuff about a lot of the relationship stuff. I think she was very happy with this episode. I'm looking forward to seeing her comment. I don't wanna like flip around and go back to the whole grief arc, but I just thought the the things that Martin was saying when he was talking to Paul and told him about cause of death and stuff were were noteworthy because I think what Paul was saying was what Martin was saying to himself about Rosemary. So they were able to take the lines that really were things that Martin couldn't say and they were having them come out of Paul's mouth. Don't you think? Mel: Yeah, and I think that's what caused him to break down eventually. but I also like the fact that even once he told Paul to cause the death, he was like, Well, why? why her? Because Chesla Wechsler: Y yes, yes. Mel: it was so you know sudden and abrupt. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: And I even remember Mark at one point saying, I mean, yeah, he was being a little it was getting a little old how he kept focusing on it's gotta be the it's gotta be the spouse, it's gotta be the spouse. But at one point I think he said it has to be the spouse because it's the only thing that really makes sense. I can't I can't imagine it being anything else because she was so young and she was healthy. it w it's it's, stuff like that is just so random that I think a lot of people just it the thought of that just, you Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Mel: freaks people out. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Cause I I think Mark was like, I know why, Doc. I know why you're being a jerk. And it's right, and it's because, Mel: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: you know, this this is the kind of thing that just shouldn't happen, so you we must have missed something. Like there's just there's no way this could happen. And then when Aunt Sarah just says when you lose somebody that you love, it's the worst thing imaginable. You know, don't punish him because you don't understand how he feels. And then Martin describes it as it was sudden, random, without cause or reason, right? And that's when Paul says, but why? She was just here. Mel: Thank you. Chesla Wechsler: She was laughing, she was smiling, and Martin is is again trying to sort of just put put put, you know, walls around or like distance it, you know. Sometimes things happen and there isn't a reason, you know, like he's he's trying to make it a very objective thing. And, you know, but why her? Why couldn't it have been me? It's like I ask myself that every day. And now you're starting to get Yeah, Gabriela: That's not right. Chesla Wechsler: you you're starting to get into Martin rather than Paul. And did you notice Paul goes, What? And Martin goes, Gabriela: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: hm. And then Gabriela: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Paul says, How do I go on living without her? It's like like we all do, one magic trick at a time. And it's like, yeah, you're you're it really is like you're trying to pull something off every time. It's like you're you're p you have to pull a rabbit out of the hat constantly in order to go on. It's just it was so well done. I really big kudos to the writers Mel: Mm-hmm. Gabriela: That's about that. Chesla Wechsler: on this. Gabriela: Yeah. Mel: Yeah, I I it seems like it was written by people who, unfortunately had probably been there and understand. Or at least Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Could be. Yeah. Yeah. Mel: input from people like that. Cause it's hard to get it's hard to get that kind of thing right. Chesla Wechsler: Mm. Yeah, agreed. So it looks like we've got a hiatus with no episode next week. Yeah, you know, it'll be Carol: Captain Gabriela: Boom. Chesla Wechsler: hard to wait after such a great episode, but it's almost like a good meal. Like I I'm I'm okay having this taste in my mouth for a couple of weeks. Right? Mel: Mm. Yeah.
