- 0:00Miriam is a prophetess because she knows who her Messiah is.
- 0:06She is honored as the sister of Moses and as a prophetess, but
- 0:11not as a wife and a mother, which is very unusual for
- 0:15biblical women. Were they aware that when Moses
- 0:19raises his arms, they win, and when Moses's arms got tired,
- 0:24they were not able to succeed? We do do not need to be afraid.
- 0:28We can stand firm. I absolutely love this advice
- 0:32from Moses. I just want to remind you that
- 0:35when Miriam is doing this, she is over 80 years old because
- 0:40Moses, her little brother, is 80 years old.
- 0:42Miriam and Aaron or Adeline. And for some reason, it seems
- 0:47like Miriam took the leadership here because Miriam is the one
- 0:50who receives a very harsh punishment.
- 0:56Hello, welcome to Scripture Central, where I want to talk
- 0:59today about the handmaidens, harems, and heroines in the Old
- 1:02Testament as these women find their Messiah.
- 1:05We're in Exodus chapters 14 to 18 in this later bronze era and
- 1:12we have some fabulous women to look at today in our Old
- 1:17Testament scripture study. I could have named it
- 1:20Prophetess, Priestess and and Princess and all of those 3
- 1:24categories would have fit very beautifully in our wonderful
- 1:26Miriam. We also are going to talk a
- 1:29little bit about her mom, Jocheved and other Hebrew women
- 1:32as they leave Egypt. So Shalom and welcome back to
- 1:36the ancient world where the Israelites have finally been
- 1:42released. They've walked through the Red
- 1:45Sea. The cloud and the pillar are
- 1:47beginning to shine. And we are introduced to the
- 1:50prophetess Miriam by name. Now, she was introduced before
- 1:55as an unnamed older sister. I assume it was Miriam, but
- 1:58maybe not. Maybe there was another unnamed
- 2:01older sister. I'm not exactly sure.
- 2:02The text doesn't tell us, but the title prophetess is only
- 2:06used for six, well actually 10 people in the Bible.
- 2:11We have Deborah as #2, Holda as #3, Isaiah's wife is #4, and
- 2:17then to the New Testament we have Anna as #5 and then the
- 2:20four daughters of Philip are also named prophetesses.
- 2:26Now we have 2 prophetesses that are prophetesses of the devil,
- 2:29not of the Lord. So I wasn't really counting
- 2:31those because those are a little different kind of women.
- 2:34But let's start here with Miriam.
- 2:37Now she's the daughter of Eram and Jacobid.
- 2:39Now if you look at the book of Numbers and Chronicles, when
- 2:43they talk about them, it sounds as if possibly they were half
- 2:47siblings. But the word is also for
- 2:50cousins. It appears to me as you go back
- 2:52to the Hebrew, to be a little closer to being cousins in their
- 2:55relatives. Most people assume that Miriam
- 3:00is the big sister who watched the basket that Jacob had
- 3:03prepared for Moses, her younger brother probably about eight
- 3:06years younger. If we are taking the Bible
- 3:09numbers literally and as Miriam is focused on here in the Old
- 3:15Testament, she is honored as the sister of Moses and as a
- 3:21prophetess, but not as a wife and a mother, which is very
- 3:24unusual for biblical women. Most of the time they're
- 3:27introduced in their relationship to either their husband or their
- 3:32sons or their daughters, but not not Miriam.
- 3:36She stands a little bit unique in this matter.
- 3:39I also want to remind you that the word prophet and this
- 3:42prophetess is one who has the spirit of prophecy.
- 3:46And we're told in the Book of Revelation by John the Revelator
- 3:50that one who has the spirit of prophecy is one who testifies
- 3:54and knows that Jesus is the Christ.
- 3:57So this means Miriam is a prophetess because she knows who
- 4:02her Messiah is. She believes in Him, and this
- 4:06comes out in her actions too. Let's start with verse 17 and 18
- 4:12when the Pharaoh left the people, God did not lead them
- 4:15around the road to the land up to the Philistines.
- 4:17You know, he could have gone the shortcut right up to the
- 4:19promised land. Slam dunk.
- 4:22It's the trips made in a few weeks, not a few 40 years.
- 4:26You know, the 40 years is because of their wickedness.
- 4:28It was unnecessary. It they did not need to take
- 4:30this long. But he does not go up that way
- 4:33initially because the Lord had told Moses, you bring all the
- 4:37children of Israel back down to Sinai.
- 4:40And so that's what these verses are saying.
- 4:43The Lord had wisdom in the route He was choosing.
- 4:47And one of the things that stated in this text, verse 18 is
- 4:51he didn't want the people to get frightened by seeing war.
- 4:55He wants to 1st develop their testimony.
- 4:57So he's taken them down to have an experience with God at the
- 5:00mountain. Now, Miriam would have been
- 5:02among those women who had borrowed the jewels from their
- 5:05neighbor who roasted that first Paschal lamb.
- 5:08Miriam would have been with the women packing and moving and,
- 5:11and and coming up against the water and seeing the the
- 5:14Egyptians behind them. Miriam probably was also close
- 5:18enough to have heard her brother say in Exodus 1321.
- 5:22Do not be afraid, stand firm and you will see the deliverance of
- 5:29the Lord. He will bring you today.
- 5:31The Egyptians you see today you will never see again and the
- 5:36Lord will fight for you and you need only to be still.
- 5:41I absolutely love this council. You know, we have a war going
- 5:46on. We have enemies chasing us, and
- 5:48they're all the adversary. They're all the, some of us have
- 5:51those outside of the adversary. But we are in a battle of our
- 5:56spiritual safety against the adversary.
- 6:00And if we can be still and receive the guidance of the
- 6:04Spirit, we can avoid them. We do not need to be afraid.
- 6:08We can stand firm. I absolutely love this advice
- 6:12from Moses and I. The reason why I think Miriam
- 6:15heard it is because of what she sings later in a beautiful poem
- 6:21and in a beautiful song and dance.
- 6:24But before we get there, as they're heading down, this is
- 6:28verse 21 of Exodus 13. The Lord went before them in the
- 6:33pillar of the cloud to guide their way, and at night by the
- 6:36pillar fire. This is such a beautiful imagery
- 6:39of a guiding, directing God who's providing warmth and
- 6:43shade, who's providing different temperature control and
- 6:47different a sign of his presence.
- 6:50And I hope in your lives you feel the spirit like a fire is
- 6:54burning. Sometimes it's more like a
- 6:56cloud. It's just a dim mist.
- 6:58Is the imagery that Elder Bednar used a foggy morning.
- 7:02But know that God is travelling with you.
- 7:06And in Exodus 14, verse 19, we're told that the Angel of God
- 7:11who had been travelling with them withdrew and went behind
- 7:14them so that this pillar of fire could move out in front.
- 7:18And that's wow, the armies of the Egyptians were destroyed,
- 7:23that God's presence was involved.
- 7:25And once the the waters of the Red Sea come back over and
- 7:28destroy them, that is when this prophetess begins her prophecy.
- 7:34And we're told in chapter 15, verse one and two, and I'll read
- 7:37this from the NIV translation. Miriam says I will sing to the
- 7:41Lord, for he is highly exalted, both horse and driver.
- 7:46He has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my
- 7:50defense. He has become my salvation.
- 7:53He is my God and I will praise him, my Father's God, and I will
- 7:59exalt him. You know, she's just filled with
- 8:02testimony, filled with faith, and she wants to do all she can
- 8:07to honor him. At this time we see Miriam here
- 8:11in a position of leadership and her words testify of her faith.
- 8:16And moving now into verse 11, she continues on.
- 8:19Who among the gods is like you, Lord?
- 8:22Who is like you, majestic and holiness and awesome and glory
- 8:26working wonders? I, I just want to mention that
- 8:30when the word Lord is capitalized, remember that means
- 8:33Yahweh. That's Jehovah, and Jehovah we
- 8:35believe, became Jesus of Nazareth and is the Son of God,
- 8:40and he was God of the Old Testament and he became the
- 8:44Savior and Messiah of the New Testament.
- 8:46And so these beautiful prophecies understand that.
- 8:52And in verse 20 it says that Miriam the prophetess, the
- 8:55sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand.
- 8:58She's also the sister of Moses, of course.
- 9:00Now this word timbrel, I thought in my mind was like a
- 9:04tambourine, but actually it's a hand drum.
- 9:07I found some descriptions of archaeologists who found them,
- 9:11and interestingly, those working in the Eastern Mediterranean
- 9:15have found about 40 little terracotta figurines that depict
- 9:20this hand drum playing that date back to the time of Moses, clear
- 9:25down to the time of Lehigh. And virtually all of these
- 9:29musicians are women on these little terracotta statues that
- 9:34they found. Now these figures show them
- 9:37playing the drums with their wrist and their hands.
- 9:41And we also find musicians artwork in Egypt where the women
- 9:46were playing either hand drums or flutes or dancing.
- 9:52And, and it's a, it's a wonderful part of their culture
- 9:55that these musical instruments and, and rhythm are part of what
- 9:59was given to the women to celebrate either a victory or
- 10:03celebrate praising God. But I just want to remind you
- 10:06that when Miriam is doing this, she is over 80 years old because
- 10:11Moses, her little brother, is 80 years old.
- 10:15The only assumption we're making here is that Miriam is the older
- 10:19sister who helped. She, she may have been a younger
- 10:21sister, but the bottom line is she's near 80 years old.
- 10:24And not only was she a beloved leader, but we see that as she
- 10:29thanked God for their survival, she was followed by the women.
- 10:34You know, Exodus 15, verse 20 and 21, all the women follows
- 10:39her and the Timberland dancing, and Miriam sang to them.
- 10:44And this is the beautiful song that she's singing as the women
- 10:47are dancing. In the greatness of your
- 10:49Majesty, you threw down those who opposed you.
- 10:53You unleashed your burning anger.
- 10:56It consumed them like stubble. You know, this is the NIV
- 11:00translation. I I just am thrilled to see
- 11:04these Israelite women joining together in song and dance.
- 11:08Now granted, if we have a million people, I don't know how
- 11:12many are joining in the song and dance, but it sounded like as
- 11:15many who wanted to join could come in.
- 11:18I'm also sort of surprised that the women chose of the few
- 11:22possessions they were able to bring with them that they chose
- 11:25to bring this. Perhaps they didn't.
- 11:27Perhaps they just gathered some things on and and were able to
- 11:30make some musical instruments as they had gone through the sea
- 11:34and and arrived on the other side.
- 11:37Whatever the situation is, I'm not sure, but I am thrilled that
- 11:42part of their celebration of God's miraculous saving of them
- 11:48is that they felt loved from God and they they sang it.
- 11:52I love the text in Exodus 1513. In your unfailing love you have
- 11:59led the people you have redeemed and in your strength you will
- 12:04guide them by your holy dwelling.
- 12:07And we're going to learn about the Tabernacle pretty soon.
- 12:10One more common about these little timbrels though these
- 12:12these these hand drums 17 times timbrels is are mentioned and
- 12:18five of the times in the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, it
- 12:22includes the musicians who are using them and every time they
- 12:26include musicians, they are women in these versus Judges
- 12:31511, First Samuel 18 and Jeremiah 13.
- 12:36So this is wonderful. We also learn a little bit later
- 12:39that there's female musicians who played at the Tabernacle in
- 12:42the temple. This is from the Psalm Psalm
- 12:44Psalm 68. Oh God in the sanctuary, damsels
- 12:47playing with timbals. Now this was not the case at the
- 12:51time of our Lord. By the New Testament, things had
- 12:53changed. Women were kept in their homes.
- 12:55But in the Old Testament, in the Hebrew, the women were part of
- 13:00the musicians that joined in the celebrations of worship and in
- 13:05exalting not only God, but also their kings and their festivals.
- 13:10One of those times is when King David brought the Ark of the
- 13:13Covenant into the Holy of Holies in Jerusalem.
- 13:15And the text emphasizes the music.
- 13:18David and all the House of Israel played music before the
- 13:21Lord on timbrels. That's Second Samuel 65.
- 13:25But as we go back to Miriam, as we see her going through the
- 13:31roles of gathering the manna and, and, and supporting and
- 13:34helping and leading these women throughout those first few
- 13:38months and days as they get to Sinai, she is a major positive
- 13:45character. But the next time we hear about
- 13:48her by name is not until Numbers chapter 12.
- 13:51And that is not a positive reaction.
- 13:55It sounds like Miriam and Aaron are speaking against their
- 13:58brother a little bit in verse one.
- 14:00And it sounds like they're mad that he is married to an
- 14:03Ethiopian now. I really don't know what's going
- 14:05on. Is there a power struggle?
- 14:07Did the new wife not appreciate the leadership of Moses's
- 14:09siblings? The text doesn't say if if if
- 14:12Zipporah, Moses first wife, the Midianite Jethro's daughter had
- 14:17had had died or if this is a second wife that's despised.
- 14:21You know, we know nothing about it except that Miriam and Aaron
- 14:25or Adeline. And for some reason, it seems
- 14:28like Miriam took the leadership here because Miriam is the one
- 14:32who receives a very harsh punishment.
- 14:35She receives leprosy and it's instantaneous.
- 14:38Immediately, Aaron asks Moses to plead to heal his sister, and
- 14:44God does. And Miriam followed the protocol
- 14:48that was established in the law of Moses.
- 14:50She had to leave the camp for a week to make sure that her sin
- 14:53condition did not spread. And the healing still had to
- 14:57wait to make sure it didn't just go away.
- 14:58And sure enough, she was completely healed.
- 15:01After a whole week, she was able to be brought back into the
- 15:03camp. You know, we're not told how she
- 15:05felt during that week of solitude, but the whole camp
- 15:09waited for her and the whole camp rejoiced when she came
- 15:15back. I do think she was very beloved.
- 15:18And then the next thing we hear about Miriam is her death.
- 15:21Numbers chapter 20, verse 1. So we'll talk about that more.
- 15:23But she did not enter the Promised land and neither did
- 15:26Aaron and neither did Moses. So we'll talk more about that
- 15:30later. But she is a great woman.
- 15:34In fact, she's so well known in the Old Testament that future
- 15:38prophets remember her. The prophet Micah, chapter 6,
- 15:41verse 4 remembers Miriam as a leader along with her brother
- 15:45Moses. It says I sent Moses to lead
- 15:47you. And also Aaron and Miriam, you
- 15:50know, the Lord is calling them as, as counselors as it would
- 15:53be, or as his supporting system. And then of course, in the New
- 15:57Testament we have 8 women who are identified as Miriam in
- 16:02Hebrew or Mary in Greek. We've got Mary of Nazareth, Mary
- 16:06of Magdala, Mary of Bethany, Mary the wife of Cleophas, Mary
- 16:10the mother of James and Josie, Mary of Jerusalem, Mary of Rome.
- 16:14And then there's the other Mary that may have been one of those,
- 16:17but I don't know. So it could be 7 or 8 women, but
- 16:20this great prophetess is one that we can join with her in
- 16:25calling for sister Scriptorians, calling for sister leaders,
- 16:29calling for the gift of the Spirit of Prophecy to be given
- 16:33to men and women so that we can fulfill the prophecy.
- 16:36Not only in Joel chapter 2 that your daughters will prophecy,
- 16:41but also the prophecy of Spencer W Kimball that has been repeated
- 16:46by multiple prophets since that time including Russell M Nelson.
- 16:50Where the women are called to lead out in righteous ways and
- 16:55be a voice and a witness for God.
- 16:58The next group of women are just general unnamed in the keeping
- 17:03of the Sabbath and gathering of the manna.
- 17:06And they had to go out every day and pick up their basket full
- 17:10their Omer of what was needed. And it sounds like mana is very,
- 17:14very tiny. You know, they say it's the size
- 17:16and a little bit like a coriander seed that has some
- 17:18sweetness to it like honey, but they don't know what it is.
- 17:21That's why they call it mana. That means I don't know what it
- 17:23is. You know, they get tired of the
- 17:26same food all the time. The Lord sends the quail and the
- 17:29women would have been involved not only in catching those
- 17:32little birds, but also in, in in preparing them and saving their
- 17:37feathers and, and then harvesting and eating the meat.
- 17:42I think the women would have all been rejoicing at the water from
- 17:46the rock. You know, as I just did a little
- 17:48bit of math to try to figure out if we do have the numbers that
- 17:52are recorded in the Bible. If we do have 600,000 men who
- 17:55are fighting age, we have got well over 1,000,000 people,
- 17:59especially with women reproducing a lot is what the
- 18:03text in in Exodus had said when they were in captivity.
- 18:08So I don't know how much time and how long you had to wait in
- 18:12a queue, how long the line was to get your water, but a million
- 18:16people drinking would have taken a long time.
- 18:19I hope it was a a huge river that flowed out.
- 18:22I hope it was a lot of water that everyone could be
- 18:25satisfied. But what a challenging time for
- 18:29these women trying to learn about God, trying to learn about
- 18:32a prophet, trying to learn about following a prophet and yet
- 18:35being hungry and thirsty and and realizing that change was needed
- 18:41before they get to Sinai. They get to Refidem where the
- 18:46battle is fought and our first battle is fought.
- 18:50And I wonder if the women were close enough to see, were they
- 18:55aware that when Moses raises his arms, they win.
- 18:59And when Moses's arms got tired, they, they were not able to
- 19:04succeed. And so our wonderful Aaron and
- 19:07her hold their arms up, you know, sustaining the prophet we
- 19:12have Aaron representing I think the Aaronic priesthood.
- 19:14And my Hebrew teacher taught me that he thought her represented
- 19:18the Melchizedek priesthood. I can't find that anywhere in
- 19:21the scriptural text, but in some ancient Jewish sources he may
- 19:24have been right hand man. But the bottom line is our
- 19:28prophet needs to be supported and our Moses was representing
- 19:33Jesus Christ. And we can be instruments in not
- 19:38only helping build the Kingdom with our Savior, but we can also
- 19:43be instruments in sustaining every level of every person who
- 19:48helps do this good work. Whether you're sustaining a
- 19:51nursery leader or if you're sustaining your local leaders in
- 19:55your community, we need to hold each other's arms up in our
- 19:58families and in our church and in our callings.
- 20:01Do you remember when Moses is initially going to Egypt, he
- 20:05brings Zipporah and his two sons with him and they were older and
- 20:09one of them had not been circumcised.
- 20:11And we don't know when Moses sent them back to heal or to
- 20:15stay with Jethro, but at some point between the time that they
- 20:19left Midian and the time now that they're at the foot of
- 20:23Sinai or almost at the foot of Sinai, Zipporah and her two
- 20:28older sons, I couldn't find any artwork with sons who are
- 20:31mature. But these, these young men are,
- 20:33are not little boys anymore. You know, he's been married for
- 20:3720-30, forty years. Possibly he arrived with Jethro
- 20:40at age 40 and he's now over 80. So these may not be young
- 20:44children. These may be grown men.
- 20:46But for whatever reason, Jethro and his family have come back.
- 20:50This is chapter 8, verse 5 and we're told that they greet each
- 20:55other with great joy and the text only refers to hugging the
- 20:59father-in-law. But I am sure Moses and Zipporah
- 21:02we're thrilled to see each other again and their sons as well.
- 21:07Remember the sons Jershom meant I have become a foreigner in a
- 21:12foreign land and Ililizar is my father's.
- 21:16God was my helper. He saved me from the sword of
- 21:20Pharaoh. So these two boys are now
- 21:23reunited with their father and the family is together.
- 21:28Not only are these women fabulous stories in the Old
- 21:31Testament, but I hope they motivate every one of us, men,
- 21:35women and children, to become priests and priestesses and
- 21:40prophets and prophetesses who speak with a gift of prophecy,
- 21:45who seek these gifts, the Spirit, and use them to build
- 21:48the Kingdom of God. And I say this in the name of
- 21:52Jesus Christ, Amen.
