- 0:01Hey. Everybody, welcome to the Good
- 0:03Morning from the Chicken Coop podcast.
- 0:05My name is Kim Johnson and I am a mastermind, set coach,
- 0:08creative strategist, and also happened to be a farmer.
- 0:11This is my chicken coop and I come out here.
- 0:13Every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So I am actually in my studio
- 0:31and you are with me and we are looking at a bunch of notebooks
- 0:37and crayons, markers, papers, all kinds of stuff and there's
- 0:42nothing written on them yet. I'm get, I'm all ready for my
- 0:45creative flow coming in. I've got these new markers that
- 0:48have a nice outline. So when you color like with a
- 0:51pink, it's got like a purple outline there.
- 0:54They seem to be very cool. We'll see how they work during
- 0:57my creative process. But today I want to share with
- 1:00you a trick that I shared with one of my clients yesterday,
- 1:05because I am very clear about the fact that I love office
- 1:10supplies. I love taking notes, I love
- 1:13details. I like writing things down,
- 1:15reading like all the nerddom stuff I love so much.
- 1:20And nothing gets me more excited than having new office supplies
- 1:23and going and doing new things with them.
- 1:24So it it, it's very easy when you're like that to get yourself
- 1:31overwhelmed with too many notebooks, too many lists, way
- 1:35too many lists, too many stickies, and your brain
- 1:41remembers that you have all of those.
- 1:43My friends, let me be very clear, When you have multiple
- 1:46lists and you keep them in multiple places and you have
- 1:50multiple notebooks, it does something to you.
- 1:54It feels frenetic. Unless of course, you've got a
- 1:58system and you've organized them where you're legitimately
- 2:01saying, OK, this is my notebook for this only.
- 2:05Great if you want to do that. I have one notebook that's I
- 2:08consider a parking lot and this parking lot is for me to put
- 2:12things in that I don't want to forget, but I'm not ready to do.
- 2:17It means, oh, that was a good idea.
- 2:19I'm going to put it over here, but I'm not ready to drive it.
- 2:21That's why it's called a parking lot.
- 2:24I'm not driving it yet. It's not coming into my bus
- 2:26because I'm clearly not ready for it.
- 2:29So this, this part of it is so important because if you feel
- 2:34like you're dumping so much stuff on yourself constantly
- 2:38that you can't accomplish it, you will be overwhelmed.
- 2:41You will feel like crap. And you will start to feel,
- 2:44especially at the end of the year, like you've run out of
- 2:46time and you're just like in such a state of overwhelm that
- 2:51there's absolutely nothing that's going to make it better.
- 2:55And before you know it, it takes over.
- 2:58And now guess what happens? You're attracting more chaos,
- 3:01You're attracting more problems because your energy is in that
- 3:05vein. You're feeling overwhelmed.
- 3:06So you're attracting overwhelm. And then you're like, Oh my
- 3:09gosh, what's happening? I've got a problem that I need
- 3:12to take care of here, and I've got a problem that I need to
- 3:14take care of. Here and I've got this and I've
- 3:15got this and then I've got all these.
- 3:16Lists. And before you know it, you're
- 3:18spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning, spinning.
- 3:20And you can't get yourself out of it.
- 3:22Well, it's exactly what happened with one of my clients.
- 3:25And the first thing I said to her was how many lists do you
- 3:28have? And she's caused quite a few.
- 3:33How many? And then throughout our
- 3:34conversation of that coaching session, over an hour, by the
- 3:38end of it, she was laughing at how many lists she had.
- 3:42And she was still going. She was still finding them.
- 3:45No wonder she felt so overwhelmed.
- 3:47No wonder she felt like she couldn't get out of it.
- 3:49No wonder it was so much and so many of the things on there were
- 3:54not urgent. They not at all were things that
- 3:58needed to be done instantaneously.
- 4:00Sure, they could get done, but they were categorized more in
- 4:04the oh, well, you know, these are things that I want to get
- 4:08done, but I don't absolutely have to hurry and get them done.
- 4:12But it doesn't matter because they're on a list and it adds to
- 4:16the frenetic energy. And then you get more things
- 4:18that go wrong. I can't stress to you enough
- 4:21what a big deal this is. Like this is a huge, huge big
- 4:25deal. And it carries over into other
- 4:28parts of our life. Like, for instance, I have an
- 4:30iPad, but that iPad is only for learning.
- 4:34I don't let my social media on it.
- 4:36I don't get text messages on it. I can't even check my e-mail on
- 4:40it because I want it shut down. It's for learning, so I can take
- 4:45notes with it. I can go to all my apps that are
- 4:48learning a master class, all these other things.
- 4:51But I don't let myself go down that rabbit hole because if I do
- 4:55now I'm overwhelmed with too much information and it's an
- 4:58isolated path for me to learn. So when you start to look at
- 5:02this habit that you potentially have, you look at it like across
- 5:06the board. But today I just want you to go
- 5:09and figure out how many lists do I really have and consolidate
- 5:13them. Put them into one big brain dump
- 5:16list. Then grab your markers and
- 5:18highlight, highlight, highlight like items.
- 5:21Chunk everything so you can actually see.
- 5:24Then take one giant piece of paper and put categories there
- 5:28and put those colors in those categories so you can see it all
- 5:33at once. And then you can circle all the
- 5:36urgent items that you want to. But my friends, not everything
- 5:40is urgent. So be careful with the word
- 5:42urgent. It's like hot pepper.
- 5:44Use it sparingly, OK? Now go get yourself organized
- 5:48for the end of the year and I will see you guys tomorrow.
- 5:51Bye.
