- 0:57Speaker 2: Up Hello, everybody.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Welcome to the Inside the Birds pregame show. I'm Jeff
- 1:12Speaker 1: Mosher with Adam Kaplan. And of course, we have Greg
- 1:14Speaker 1: Cosell with us to help us break down the tape
- 1:18Speaker 1: of both the Eagles and the Bears as they get
- 1:21Speaker 1: ready to collide Monday night, week three matchup on primetime.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It should be an exciting one.
- 1:27Speaker 1: We all know that the Eagles had it handed to
- 1:30Speaker 1: them by the Bears last year on Black Friday. A
- 1:32Speaker 1: little bit of revenge, but this one is in Soldier
- 1:35Speaker 1: Field in Chicago.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So a lot to talk about.
- 1:38Speaker 1: As we get ready for really the first major test
- 1:42Speaker 1: for the Eagles of the year as they are 2-0
- 1:43Speaker 1: coming off that thrilling last-minute win over the Titans. The
- 1:47Speaker 1: Bears scored 59 points in Week 1 and then just
- 1:52Speaker 1: 3 in Week 2. There's an old adage, if a
- 1:54Speaker 1: team scores 50 or more points, take the under on
- 1:56Speaker 1: them next week, and that held true. They are 1-1
- 2:00Speaker 1: going into the matchup. So it should be fun, should
- 2:02Speaker 1: be interesting. Initial thoughts, Adam Kaplan, on this matchup between
- 2:06Speaker 1: the Bears and the Eagles?
- 2:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a shame that Caleb Williams isn't going to
- 2:09Speaker 3: be playing because then it would have had a lot
- 2:11Speaker 3: more juice. But, you know, it is Monday Night Football.
- 2:13Speaker 3: We don't have to worry about weather, by the way.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It's going to be clear. So that's good. It'll be
- 2:18Speaker 3: a fun game. You know, you mentioned what happened and
- 2:20Speaker 3: they got embarrassed, the Eagles did, at home against Chicago
- 2:23Speaker 3: when they had two rushers rush for over 100 yards
- 2:25Speaker 3: in the first half, which is unheard of. And Jalen Carter,
- 2:28Speaker 3: we should mention, was not healthy. He had a bad
- 2:30Speaker 3: shoulder then. So he's healthy now from that, but he's
- 2:33Speaker 3: got the wrist issue. But I'm interested to see what
- 2:37Speaker 3: their approach is on, because we know they're going to
- 2:41Speaker 3: be playing, the Bears are going to be playing a
- 2:42Speaker 3: backup quarterback, how they do that. We know they don't blitz,
- 2:44Speaker 3: but we'll get into that. Then offensively, it's, can they
- 2:52Speaker 3: build off last week? Because Hurts played exceptionally well, and
- 2:55Speaker 3: I'm very interested to see what their approach is.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Greg, what do you wonder from an analyst standpoint about
- 2:59Speaker 1: this game? As you've watched tape on both teams, you
- 3:02Speaker 1: know them very well.
- 3:03Speaker 2: What do you wonder?
- 3:04Speaker 4: Well, one thing to keep in mind, and a lot
- 3:06Speaker 4: of people who don't study the teams, you know, obviously
- 3:10Speaker 4: Philly fans might know the Eagles very well, but they
- 3:12Speaker 4: may not study the other teams. The Bears scored three
- 3:15Speaker 4: points last week against a Vikings defense that is high,
- 3:18Speaker 4: high percentage pressure. And high, high percentage pressure look fronts,
- 3:22Speaker 4: even on the snaps where they choose not to bring pressure.
- 3:25Speaker 4: The Eagles don't play that way. So again, I'm not
- 3:27Speaker 4: suggesting that the Bears are going to put up 59. Obviously,
- 3:30Speaker 4: they're playing with a backup quarterback, but this is not
- 3:33Speaker 4: a direct apples-to-apples correlation in terms of how the Vikings
- 3:37Speaker 4: play the Bears and how the Eagles will play the Bears.
- 3:40Speaker 4: So just so people understand that tactically, it will be
- 3:42Speaker 4: a different game on that side of the ball.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Got it. All right, let us talk about the injuries.
- 3:47Speaker 1: They factor in greatly going into this game. Adam, you
- 3:51Speaker 1: already mentioned it. For the Bears, Caleb Williams is out. Now,
- 3:55Speaker 1: their backup quarterback, Tyson Bajent, has been in the concussion
- 3:58Speaker 1: protocol all week long. He did practice on Saturday, but
- 4:02Speaker 1: as we talk about all the time, that is part
- 4:06Speaker 1: of being in the protocol. It doesn't mean you're ready
- 4:08Speaker 1: to go. You still have to respond well to that,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and then you have to clear that last stage, Adam, correct,
- 4:13Speaker 1: as the independent neurologist?
- 4:14Speaker 3: He actually was cleared. He actually was cleared Saturday, so
- 4:17Speaker 3: he's out of the protocol.
- 4:17Speaker 2: By the neurologist?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Okay, okay. Yeah, they said it. Yeah, they said he cleared.
- 4:23Speaker 3: But here's the thing. He only practiced one day. It
- 4:26Speaker 3: was the short day. Saturday, that's like a Friday practice
- 4:29Speaker 3: for a Sunday game. So that's like an hour practice.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So did he get enough work? And this guy's a
- 4:33Speaker 3: young quarterback. You know, he hasn't played a lot. So
- 4:37Speaker 3: I'll be interested to see what they do. And obviously,
- 4:39Speaker 3: if they don't think he's ready, it would be Case Keenum,
- 4:41Speaker 3: who the Eagles know very well, going back nine years
- 4:43Speaker 3: to the NCAA championship game.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Yes. I will say one thing, though, and we have
- 4:47Speaker 4: no idea if Pagent goes, how he will play. Obviously,
- 4:51Speaker 4: it's a regular season game against a quality opponent. But
- 4:54Speaker 4: every time he's played with Ben Johnson, he's just looked efficient. Now,
- 5:00Speaker 4: I know a lot of that's preseason, and that doesn't
- 5:02Speaker 4: mean a whole lot in terms of playing a regular
- 5:05Speaker 4: season game. But I'm just talking about how he stylistically
- 5:07Speaker 4: ran the offense. He wasn't making plays by running around.
- 5:11Speaker 4: He didn't get stuck in the pocket. He actually looked
- 5:13Speaker 4: efficient running the offense and running the pass game.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And if it were, per se, Case Keenum, who hasn't
- 5:22Speaker 2: thrown a pass in quite a while?
- 5:24Speaker 4: Yeah, and Keenum, you know, he's one of those veterans
- 5:26Speaker 4: that probably understands the offense. We'll get into all this
- 5:29Speaker 4: a lot more, but obviously they have a very, very
- 5:32Speaker 4: good run game. And we'll talk about the specifics of it.
- 5:35Speaker 4: And I think they would rely on that because just
- 5:37Speaker 4: as a quick point that we will get into, quite frankly,
- 5:40Speaker 4: on both sides of their lines, the Eagles have not
- 5:42Speaker 4: been at their best through two games.
- 5:45Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And that will address some of that in the injury
- 5:47Speaker 1: report as well with the Eagles offensive line. Adam, I
- 5:50Speaker 1: know earlier in the week we gave an early word
- 5:53Speaker 1: on Bears, other injuries for the Bears besides quarterback, and
- 5:56Speaker 1: it looked bleak at some positions. But while Noah Sewell,
- 5:59Speaker 1: the linebacker, is out and Shamar Turner, a defensive lineman,
- 6:03Speaker 1: is out, other guys who there were questions about, not
- 6:07Speaker 1: so bad.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Looks like they're going to play.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Guys like Joe Tooney and Tyreek Stevenson in their secondary
- 6:12Speaker 1: and Kyle Menungai, who is dealing with the knee.
- 6:14Speaker 2: The only people out are William Sewell and Turner. So
- 6:17Speaker 2: that's kind of a better slate for them.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, well, so in turn, they knew they weren't going
- 6:21Speaker 3: to play because they're just coming back from practice. They're
- 6:25Speaker 3: on reserve POP. But the big one is Stevenson because
- 6:28Speaker 3: Ben Johnson seemed to cast doubt Wednesday when he spoke
- 6:32Speaker 3: earlier in the week to the media. But no, he's good.
- 6:35Speaker 3: He's going to start. That's a big deal. That's a
- 6:37Speaker 3: real big deal for him to start. And then I
- 6:40Speaker 3: would say other than that, one thing on Bajan, he
- 6:43Speaker 3: has not started a game. since 2023, a regular season game. Right.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So we should make that point. Yes.
- 6:49Speaker 1: But he did come in in relief last week for them.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And he is the guy, let's be honest, he's the
- 6:55Speaker 1: guy that has been in this Ben Johnson system.
- 6:57Speaker 2: They like him. They gave him a contract extension.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:59Speaker 1: They believe that he's a pretty good quarterback for what
- 7:01Speaker 1: they want to do or else they wouldn't have done that.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Without question. And like I said, every time he's played,
- 7:07Speaker 4: he must have, you know, we don't know him personally
- 7:10Speaker 4: and obviously they're not going to talk about this, but
- 7:11Speaker 4: he just must have a very good feel about for
- 7:14Speaker 4: understanding the offense. Because this is a very detailed offense
- 7:18Speaker 4: that is the operational part of this offense is critical.
- 7:21Speaker 4: And by that I mean calling the play in the huddle,
- 7:24Speaker 4: getting to the line of scrimmage with 12, 13, 14
- 7:27Speaker 4: seconds so you have time for two things, to research
- 7:30Speaker 4: the defense and to deploy the shifts and motions that
- 7:32Speaker 4: are very much a part of it. So they must
- 7:35Speaker 4: feel that he's very, very good at that.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Well, I mean, he comes from the factory, quarterback factory
- 7:40Speaker 2: of Shepherd University, guys.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Out there in West Virginia.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 3: All right. Real quick, real quick. We should add this
- 7:48Speaker 3: one and something to watch in the game. Cairo Santos,
- 7:50Speaker 3: their kicker, who's a right footed kicker. He's got a
- 7:54Speaker 3: right hip injury. Now he got cleared to kick, so
- 7:57Speaker 3: he's going to be able to play, but he didn't
- 7:59Speaker 3: practice Thursday or Friday. He did take his reps on Saturday.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Something to watch in the game. Okay. Something to watch
- 8:05Speaker 3: in the game because when you're, when you've got a
- 8:07Speaker 3: hip injury and it's the side you kick on, you
- 8:10Speaker 3: got to watch that. So we'll watch that Monday night.
- 8:12Speaker 2: All right, good stuff.
- 8:13Speaker 1: A lot to watch, Adam and Greg, about the Eagles
- 8:17Speaker 1: and their offense as it pertains to personnel and injuries.
- 8:20Speaker 2: So we know Dallas Goddard is going to be out.
- 8:23Speaker 1: He's got a knee injury. He's going to be out
- 8:25Speaker 1: a couple weeks, right? We know the Eagles signed Zach Ertz.
- 8:28Speaker 1: We're going to get to that in a second.
- 8:29Speaker 2: To the practice squad.
- 8:30Speaker 1: But you take a look at the injury report, Adam,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and one of the things we spoke about was how
- 8:35Speaker 1: do you maneuver your way around not really playing as
- 8:38Speaker 1: much 12 personnel as you want to, more 11, maybe
- 8:41Speaker 1: some 10, but Hollywood Browns. out for the game with
- 8:44Speaker 1: an ankle injury, and then sort of the old pop-up deal,
- 8:48Speaker 1: Fred Johnson, their top swing tackle and their top reserve
- 8:53Speaker 1: left tackle, out for this game. Man, does that put
- 8:57Speaker 1: pressure on Jordan Mailata not to get banged up and
- 8:59Speaker 1: to stay healthy because they would be in a world
- 9:01Speaker 1: of hurt if that were to happen.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Yes, so right now we know Bell can back up
- 9:06Speaker 3: right tackle. He might have to be the swing tackle. Now,
- 9:10Speaker 3: he did take reps, as we understood, in training camp
- 9:12Speaker 3: at left tackle. He took some snaps there. Yeah. But
- 9:16Speaker 3: that is concerning. And the only guys they have will
- 9:20Speaker 3: be John Ojukwu, who is more of a right tackle
- 9:22Speaker 3: than a left. And Kieran Imajide, who's the former Bear,
- 9:28Speaker 3: was he a fourth-round pick or third-round pick out of Yale?
- 9:31Speaker 4: Yale.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:32Speaker 4: What about Markel Bell? Is he hurt?
- 9:34Speaker 3: No, no, he took reps at– he's basically in the
- 9:37Speaker 3: right tackle.
- 9:37Speaker 4: He played left tackle, though, in college.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Right, right. The only thing, though, Greg, is he didn't
- 9:41Speaker 3: take– he took very few reps at left tackle in
- 9:44Speaker 3: training camp.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I know.
- 9:46Speaker 4: But, I mean, the point is he has experience playing
- 9:48Speaker 4: the position in college.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Sure, sure.
- 9:49Speaker 4: It wouldn't be brand new for him.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Right. Yeah. But the bottom line is, Jeff, as you
- 9:53Speaker 3: brought it up, if somebody gets hurt, Bell's in. Bell's
- 9:59Speaker 3: got to be. And they don't really have much. Ojukwu
- 10:03Speaker 3: should be added off the practice squad. He's healthy now,
- 10:07Speaker 3: so he should be able to be moved up.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I would think that elevations are going to be
- 10:11Speaker 1: really key for the Eagles. And then that brings us
- 10:14Speaker 1: to Zach Ertz. Will he be elevated for the game?
- 10:18Speaker 1: As we discussed– and, Greg, I'm sure you would agree
- 10:20Speaker 1: with this. We had to kind of address this on
- 10:23Speaker 1: a pod earlier this weekend.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard– I'm sorry.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Zach Ertz is a player the Eagles needed because they
- 10:30Speaker 1: needed tight end depth. He is not a replacement by
- 10:34Speaker 1: any stretch of the means for Dallas Goddard because– He
- 10:37Speaker 1: doesn't do everything that Dallas Goddard does. He's not per
- 10:40Speaker 1: se an inline. People who know Zach Ertz know he's not.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Blocking is not his forte.
- 10:44Speaker 1: So even if he is elevated, and I'm going to
- 10:47Speaker 1: ask you in a minute about his tape from Washington
- 10:50Speaker 1: before he hurt himself last year, but even if he's elevated,
- 10:53Speaker 1: this is going to be a very dicey situation for
- 10:56Speaker 1: Sean Mannion from a personnel usage standpoint.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Well, let's assume that amazingly enough, he's healthy and he
- 11:03Speaker 4: can play the way Zach Ertz played the last couple
- 11:06Speaker 4: of years that now that's a big question he's still
- 11:09Speaker 4: not he still doesn't give you the same thing Dallas
- 11:12Speaker 4: Goddard does what Zach Ertz gives you is the ability
- 11:15Speaker 4: to find voids and zones he has a great feel
- 11:18Speaker 4: for that he essentially at this point in his career
- 11:21Speaker 4: is a sort of 12 or 10 yard and under
- 11:23Speaker 4: receiver that's what he is now he's very good at
- 11:26Speaker 4: it but he's not he's not a seam stretcher he
- 11:29Speaker 4: can't do what Goddard does right so uh again Coaches
- 11:33Speaker 4: deal with these kinds of things all the time. Not
- 11:36Speaker 4: that they love it or not that that makes it
- 11:37Speaker 4: better or easier, but it's not as if Sean Mannion
- 11:41Speaker 4: and the staff are going, oh, my God, we can't
- 11:42Speaker 4: play offense. They just do different things.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Correct.
- 11:45Speaker 4: But shirts cannot do what Goddard can do.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And let's also look at the facts here, Adam, as
- 11:51Speaker 1: we talked about before. Zachary is 35. He's coming off
- 11:54Speaker 1: his second ACL tear of his career. He did not
- 11:58Speaker 1: spend any time in OTAs with the team. He did
- 12:00Speaker 1: not spend any time in training camp with the team.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So since his last game last year.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:05Speaker 1: He has three practices under his belt, one of which
- 12:08Speaker 1: was maybe two of which were walkthroughs, because I believe
- 12:10Speaker 1: their first practice this week was basically a walkthrough. So
- 12:14Speaker 1: we're not exactly talking about a guy who's ready to
- 12:16Speaker 1: go out there and play a whole lot of snaps,
- 12:18Speaker 1: if any at all.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. And by the way, he turns 36 in
- 12:22Speaker 3: two weeks.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I mean, this is this is I was trying to
- 12:24Speaker 2: be nice to him, Adam.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. October 10th. So, yeah, that's that's a
- 12:29Speaker 3: big deal.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 3: You know, I brought this up on a show earlier
- 12:32Speaker 3: this week with you. And I know Hollywood Browns is
- 12:35Speaker 3: not playing. You know, he has this late-in-the-week knee injury
- 12:40Speaker 3: or ankle injury. But the bottom line is they still
- 12:45Speaker 3: have Cooper. Darius Cooper did a good job last week.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Hurts really likes him. Wicks and Smith. Wicks has been phenomenal.
- 12:50Speaker 3: But Kyle Lemmon's going to play a lot because he's
- 12:53Speaker 3: a first-round pick. That's why they're playing a lot of
- 12:54Speaker 3: 11 personnel. And they have Elijah Moore, who had a
- 12:57Speaker 3: really good training camp, so they could still go heavy 11.
- 12:59Speaker 3: It's not like they have to go 12, even with
- 13:01Speaker 3: Zach Batts.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Correct.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And they've been a 75%. I believe Greg may have
- 13:05Speaker 1: the numbers. They've been 74, 75%, 11 personnel already this year.
- 13:09Speaker 1: So that trend very likely.
- 13:11Speaker 4: And by the way, the Bears have struggled in the
- 13:13Speaker 4: past game allowing explosive plays. So, I mean, obviously they
- 13:17Speaker 4: gave up a ton week one. You know, that's something
- 13:20Speaker 4: to keep in mind as well. Tyreek Stevenson, who's going
- 13:24Speaker 4: to play, he has a lot of really good traits,
- 13:27Speaker 4: but he's one of those guys that just, from a
- 13:31Speaker 4: mental standpoint, technique standpoint, just doesn't play the way his
- 13:34Speaker 4: traits are as often as you would like. And Jalen
- 13:38Speaker 4: Johnson is not the player he once was. He's not
- 13:41Speaker 4: a bad player, but he had two or three years
- 13:43Speaker 4: there where he legitimately was probably a top five corner
- 13:46Speaker 4: in the league. He's not at that level right now.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And, of course, we've mentioned it before, but one of
- 13:52Speaker 1: their better corners, Kyler Gordon, on IR at the moment,
- 13:55Speaker 1: so he will not be able to play as well.
- 13:58Speaker 4: From what I hear from people, he may never play
- 14:00Speaker 4: for the Bears again. But who knows? He's certainly not
- 14:03Speaker 4: playing Monday night.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yes, not playing Monday night.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Other injury news for the Eagles is better, a lot better.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley had the stinger. He was wearing the little
- 14:15Speaker 1: middle linebacker neck roll from the 80s.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 14:17Speaker 1: In practice, I know he told reporters after the game,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I mean this week, that he's good to go. Although
- 14:23Speaker 1: he did say his left arm is still a little wonky,
- 14:27Speaker 1: but he carries the ball in his right arm.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So it's just something to watch.
- 14:29Speaker 1: I mean, anytime a running back has any kind of discomfort,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you want to make sure that you're watching how their
- 14:35Speaker 1: ball carriage is and their security is.
- 14:37Speaker 2: But he is going to play.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Jalen Carter, as Adam, you mentioned, he's got the wrist
- 14:41Speaker 1: that had the cast in it, but he was a
- 14:43Speaker 1: full participant Saturday.
- 14:45Speaker 2: He's going to play.
- 14:45Speaker 1: The big one is Jonathan Grenard has graduated to a
- 14:49Speaker 1: full participant in Saturday's practice. Now, he's still listed as questionable.
- 14:54Speaker 1: He did tell reporters in the locker room he feels
- 14:56Speaker 1: like he's ready to go and good to go. It
- 14:59Speaker 1: sounds like he'll play being a full participant. I, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 1: we'll see how he responds to that.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Um, how bad, how would you, Greg, when you look
- 15:07Speaker 2: at what.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard has brought throughout his career and you compare
- 15:10Speaker 1: them to what the Eagles have in Jalex Hunt and Smith,
- 15:16Speaker 1: what's the difference?
- 15:17Speaker 4: Well, Jonathan Grenard, if healthy and at his best is
- 15:21Speaker 4: the best pass rusher on their team. And that's why
- 15:23Speaker 4: they made the trade. He's been a very good pass rusher. Um, So, yes,
- 15:27Speaker 4: they need that because, quite frankly, they've not really been
- 15:30Speaker 4: able to generate a whole lot of pressure. I mean,
- 15:32Speaker 4: Jalek's hunt, I think, has probably been the best. But
- 15:36Speaker 4: this has not been a pressureful front four. And, you know,
- 15:40Speaker 4: one of the things, and we talked about this last
- 15:42Speaker 4: year and it's been continuing this year, which is really
- 15:44Speaker 4: kind of interesting. No knock on the Eagles. You know, obviously,
- 15:48Speaker 4: they make their decisions and they believe that D-tackle is
- 15:51Speaker 4: so critical. And it is, given the way they play.
- 15:54Speaker 4: but they've had 29 third downs through the first two games. And, uh, Davis,
- 15:59Speaker 4: Jordan Davis has been on the field for four of them,
- 16:01Speaker 4: three of which were third and ones. So he still
- 16:04Speaker 4: does not play on third down and pass rush situations.
- 16:07Speaker 4: And by the way, you could easily make the argument
- 16:10Speaker 4: that the best defensive tackle to two games overall has
- 16:14Speaker 4: been more over Jomo. You could easily make that argument
- 16:17Speaker 4: based on tape. It's not, it's not an interpretation. It's
- 16:20Speaker 4: not an opinion. It's based on tape. Um, And so
- 16:25Speaker 4: he's getting more and more snaps. I believe in last
- 16:28Speaker 4: Sunday's game, which obviously was a much closer game than
- 16:31Speaker 4: people thought it was going to be, he played 68%
- 16:35Speaker 4: of the snaps and Davis played 43% of the snaps.
- 16:38Speaker 4: That is a huge difference for a player in Davis
- 16:41Speaker 4: who they just signed to a big contract. And they
- 16:44Speaker 4: probably can't sign to Jomo to a big contract because
- 16:47Speaker 4: they have Davis and Carter. It's the reason Williams is
- 16:50Speaker 4: not there. And by the way, Milton Williams is a
- 16:52Speaker 4: better pass rusher too than Davis. Of course.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And by the way, we keep saying by the way,
- 16:58Speaker 1: that was a big disparity in snaps on a day
- 17:00Speaker 1: where it was like 110 degrees out. You would have
- 17:02Speaker 1: thought if any reason for it to be closer and
- 17:05Speaker 1: more rotation, that would have been it.
- 17:07Speaker 2: So clearly the coaches are telling.
- 17:08Speaker 1: You that they just like Moro Jomo right now more,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and he's on the field a whole lot more.
- 17:14Speaker 4: And we all know– Vince Vic Fangio is, is not
- 17:18Speaker 4: a guy that's going to be told who he should
- 17:20Speaker 4: play and not to play based on a contract. He's
- 17:22Speaker 4: going to play who he believes are the best players
- 17:25Speaker 4: to play in any given situation.
- 17:27Speaker 2: For sure.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Uh, the rest of the Eagles injury report was very good. Uh,
- 17:30Speaker 1: full participation from a Cuba Devante Smith and Tyler Steen, uh,
- 17:34Speaker 1: on the last day of practice, also tank Bigsby. They're
- 17:37Speaker 1: all carrying no injury designation for this game.
- 17:41Speaker 2: So that is a question.
- 17:42Speaker 4: I have a question. Um, Kenny Moore, is he going
- 17:45Speaker 4: to be active this week?
- 17:47Speaker 3: I would be surprised. I'd be surprised. Because he's got
- 17:50Speaker 3: to learn the defense. And that's a lot. It's a
- 17:53Speaker 3: big ask in one week. Plus, they don't really need him. Jeff,
- 17:55Speaker 3: where would they need him right now?
- 17:57Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say to Greg. He
- 17:59Speaker 1: is for the few. Unless there's a special teams role. But,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I mean, right now, you only get two elevations. We
- 18:05Speaker 1: just said you're probably going to have to elevate an
- 18:07Speaker 1: offensive tackle as one of them with Fred Johnson.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Now, it might be Ujukwu.
- 18:12Speaker 1: You don't have to elevate anybody for returning because Covey
- 18:14Speaker 1: is now on the 53. But I don't know if
- 18:17Speaker 1: that Kenny Moore is ready and ramped up enough to
- 18:19Speaker 1: go after. Same thing with Urch, just a few practices.
- 18:22Speaker 4: So are we now assuming Kenny Moore gets ramped up
- 18:27Speaker 4: and can still play relative Kenny Moore football? You know,
- 18:30Speaker 4: maybe he's not the same guy as four or five
- 18:32Speaker 4: years ago, but he's always been a savvy, smart, aware
- 18:35Speaker 4: player who can do a lot of things. Are we
- 18:38Speaker 4: talking about Dajin moving to safety full time?
- 18:41Speaker 1: Vic put the kibosh on it. He was asked that
- 18:43Speaker 1: exact question, and he said no. So that's the plan now.
- 18:48Speaker 3: That's the million-dollar question. We know he plays two positions,
- 18:51Speaker 3: nickel and corner, so he's not playing safety. He's never
- 18:53Speaker 3: played it. Now, Vic didn't completely shoot it down when
- 18:57Speaker 3: he was asked, but he basically said, I don't know,
- 19:00Speaker 3: because he had not even watched him yet. So it's
- 19:03Speaker 3: kind of puzzling, this signing. I know they always liked him,
- 19:07Speaker 3: but Really, Jeff, you and I have talked about this
- 19:09Speaker 3: for a number of weeks. One position they really need
- 19:11Speaker 3: is safety. They don't need a– like, do they need
- 19:13Speaker 3: a fourth corner? Sure, they definitely do.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Right.
- 19:15Speaker 3: But that's not coming into play unless somebody gets hurt. Yeah.
- 19:19Speaker 3: They have enough nickels. They don't need any more.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Greg, you would have enjoyed Vic Fangio's press conference. The
- 19:24Speaker 1: first question about Kenny Moore was just simply, what do
- 19:27Speaker 1: you think of Kenny Moore? And Vic was like, you
- 19:29Speaker 1: might have– Vic might have thought he heard something in German.
- 19:32Speaker 1: He almost didn't know who Kenny– he acted as if
- 19:35Speaker 1: he didn't really know Kenny Moore.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Well, they probably didn't have an opinion on the signing,
- 19:39Speaker 4: and he's not focused on what the front office is
- 19:41Speaker 4: doing as far as players on other teams.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Correct.
- 19:44Speaker 4: So he obviously knows who he is, but he probably
- 19:47Speaker 4: hasn't watched him play in five years.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Alright, let's get into the matchup of this game. Let's
- 19:54Speaker 1: talk about this Eagles offense against this Bears defense. I
- 19:56Speaker 1: think it's an important discussion point because this is really
- 19:59Speaker 1: the start of a three-game gauntlet, if you will, for
- 20:02Speaker 1: the Eagles against three teams that were all double-digit in
- 20:05Speaker 1: wins and in the playoffs last year. It'll be The Bears,
- 20:08Speaker 1: then the Rams, and then the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
- 20:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 20:12Speaker 1: The Eagles have lived so far for two weeks in third. Well,
- 20:17Speaker 1: more so week two. But if you look, they have
- 20:20Speaker 1: as many third and long snaps as they do third
- 20:23Speaker 1: and short and third and medium combined, which is almost
- 20:27Speaker 1: a repeat of what they were last year, which is
- 20:29Speaker 1: constantly in third and long and third and long. They
- 20:32Speaker 1: have survived against two bad teams and flourished even. Jalen Hurts,
- 20:36Speaker 1: very good game. We talked about that against the Titans.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Greg, I don't know.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I mean, I know you study stats, but it's very,
- 20:43Speaker 1: very difficult in a 17-game season when you start playing
- 20:46Speaker 1: good teams to exist as much in third and long
- 20:48Speaker 1: as the Eagles have been doing.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and again, it comes down to the run game again.
- 20:53Speaker 4: They basically changed their run game approach. The O-line is
- 20:58Speaker 4: not been very good so far, and they've now had
- 21:00Speaker 4: to make a major change, you know, where you've moved
- 21:03Speaker 4: your center to left guard and you're playing a new center.
- 21:06Speaker 4: And I can tell you that every year when I
- 21:09Speaker 4: go to the O-line masterminds in Dallas, Texas in July,
- 21:12Speaker 4: and they bring Hall of Fame O-linemen in, the first
- 21:15Speaker 4: thing they say when they talk about O-line play, they
- 21:18Speaker 4: never talk about themselves. I'm talking about Hall of Famers,
- 21:20Speaker 4: like Steve Hutchinson's of the world. They all talk about
- 21:24Speaker 4: cohesion and working together as the absolute number one thing
- 21:29Speaker 4: And obviously the Eagles don't have that right now. And
- 21:31Speaker 4: particularly in a zone run game, which is very much,
- 21:35Speaker 4: you know, I used to do pieces in the matchup
- 21:37Speaker 4: show with the great zone running teams, like when Alex
- 21:41Speaker 4: Gibbs was in Denver. And it almost looks like synchronized
- 21:44Speaker 4: swimming with everybody's footwork. It looks exactly the same. And
- 21:48Speaker 4: that takes time. So this is going to be a
- 21:51Speaker 4: work in progress. And obviously it's the regular season. So
- 21:54Speaker 4: you don't want to hear that it's a work in progress,
- 21:56Speaker 4: but they're still human beings. And it's not easy to do. So,
- 22:01Speaker 4: you know, and then we've had the discussion and I
- 22:04Speaker 4: don't know if it's right or wrong. This is a
- 22:06Speaker 4: little bit of an opinion and people could disagree. I've
- 22:10Speaker 4: been watching Saquon Barkley basically since college. Jeff, I know
- 22:13Speaker 4: you do agree because we've had this conversation. I'm not
- 22:16Speaker 4: sure if his running style truly fits that mid to
- 22:19Speaker 4: outside zone concept. Not that he's bad, not that he would,
- 22:23Speaker 4: you know, rush for 500 yards and be terrible. But
- 22:26Speaker 4: I don't know if truly, because to me, he is
- 22:30Speaker 4: a big man with ridiculous explosive speed, but he's a
- 22:34Speaker 4: little tight-hipped. And he's not necessarily a, he doesn't effectively
- 22:39Speaker 4: walk that fine line that's required in the outside zone
- 22:42Speaker 4: between patience and decisiveness. And I think people can understand
- 22:47Speaker 4: what that means. You have to sort of let it
- 22:49Speaker 4: all happen. The way I describe it is you have
- 22:51Speaker 4: to be aware of the blocking scheme. the defensive flow,
- 22:55Speaker 4: and the change in the gaps. And all this has
- 22:58Speaker 4: to happen naturally. You're not thinking this. You're just reacting
- 23:01Speaker 4: to it. And I'm not sure he's that kind of runner.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Greg, it's a really interesting point. I agree with it.
- 23:07Speaker 2: It's something we all talked about on Inside the Tape
- 23:10Speaker 2: earlier this week.
- 23:11Speaker 1: We also agreed that he's a good enough running back
- 23:14Speaker 1: to be able to figure things out. Where I worry
- 23:18Speaker 1: is the first run of the game was actually an
- 23:20Speaker 1: inside zone run.
- 23:21Speaker 2: They still do try to run inside.
- 23:23Speaker 1: And there was a little bit of, I guess, traffic
- 23:27Speaker 1: on the right where the run was blocked, too.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I think Munt kind of slipped. I forget how it went.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And automatically, the first thing you see Barkley do is
- 23:35Speaker 1: plant the right foot, then plant the left foot. And
- 23:37Speaker 1: that gave the defense enough time to convert because he
- 23:40Speaker 1: was looking for a hole. instead of just hitting something
- 23:43Speaker 1: and trying to fall forward and get a few yards,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and then he wound up getting hurt.
- 23:46Speaker 2: So I'm worrying right now.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Just based on what I see on tape, Greg, and
- 23:50Speaker 1: I think maybe I'll throw this to you, I'm also
- 23:53Speaker 1: seeing someone who I think doesn't trust it. And when
- 23:55Speaker 1: he doesn't trust it, it slows up his own play speed.
- 23:58Speaker 4: And that could well be true. But the one thing
- 24:00Speaker 4: about him is, He is a little stiff in the hips.
- 24:05Speaker 4: I mean, he's always been that. He's downhill, I mean,
- 24:08Speaker 4: for a man that size, his vertical burst and acceleration
- 24:11Speaker 4: is as good as anybody in the league. You know,
- 24:14Speaker 4: maybe with the exception of a Jameer Gibbs, you know,
- 24:16Speaker 4: who's off the charts. But that's his game. He's not
- 24:20Speaker 4: really a loose-hipped, you know, shifty, elusive change of direction back. Which, again,
- 24:26Speaker 4: is not to say he can't do any of that,
- 24:28Speaker 4: but that's not really his game. You know, so.
- 24:32Speaker 4: This is an adjustment for him as well.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:36Speaker 1: Here's a bigger, broader question that we'll continue to try
- 24:39Speaker 1: to get answers to, Adam, after this game.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And you made this point. We talked about it. And
- 24:44Speaker 2: I completely agree with you.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I think at some point this– Sort of waiting in
- 24:49Speaker 1: vain for the quote-unquote Eagles offensive line to get right
- 24:53Speaker 1: and be what it used to be is just that.
- 24:56Speaker 1: It's not the same personnel. You're a little bit older
- 24:59Speaker 1: at offensive tackle. I'm not sure Maialata is playing at
- 25:02Speaker 1: a high level as he was two years ago. Greg
- 25:03Speaker 1: can answer that in a second. But in general, they
- 25:06Speaker 1: don't move people off the ball the way they did
- 25:09Speaker 1: two years ago and even before that. Football is finally
- 25:11Speaker 1: back and PrizePix is bringing out their best offer yet.

- 27:43Speaker 3: I mean, you saw, going from 24 to 25, you
- 27:46Speaker 3: saw the decline physically of a bunch of their interior linemen, okay?
- 27:49Speaker 3: That happened last year. Dixon's hurt again. We could debate
- 27:54Speaker 3: whether Juergens is the same player. You're playing Drew Kendall now, okay?
- 27:57Speaker 3: So you've got, and Lane Johnson's yet another year older.
- 28:00Speaker 3: So this offensive line, the bottom line is it's in decline.
- 28:04Speaker 3: How much so we're going to ride the rest of
- 28:06Speaker 3: the season? Greg talked about it. Let's see how they
- 28:10Speaker 3: handle this zone scheme. This is something they've not done,
- 28:13Speaker 3: be a full-time zone team, mostly zone. And then the
- 28:17Speaker 3: way they're doing it, the way they're deploying it, it's
- 28:19Speaker 3: just different from their mentality. And the other thing we
- 28:21Speaker 3: didn't really talk much about Our friend Trey Thomas, when
- 28:24Speaker 3: Trey worked with us, Trey would tell us about how
- 28:27Speaker 3: Jeff Stetland taught offensive line hand usage. Well, this is
- 28:31Speaker 3: probably different.
- 28:32Speaker 4: It is.
- 28:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:34Speaker 3: You add all this, Jeff, together. It's a major work
- 28:37Speaker 3: in progress. Nobody wants to hear it, but it's the reality.
- 28:39Speaker 3: You're just going to have to accept it.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Well, that's really interesting because accepting that means the Eagles
- 28:45Speaker 1: may just never get there. I mean, they want to
- 28:47Speaker 1: be foundationally a run team and they want to get
- 28:49Speaker 1: this wide zone going. And you just wonder how long
- 28:52Speaker 1: will we keep saying it's.
- 28:53Speaker 2: A work in progress? It's a work in progress before
- 28:55Speaker 2: it does not progress.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Well, they're playing, they're playing the bears. I mean, when
- 29:00Speaker 4: it comes to the passing game anyway, which they might
- 29:02Speaker 4: have to hang their hat on because, uh, the bears
- 29:05Speaker 4: have a pretty low pressure rate in the league. Um,
- 29:08Speaker 4: So they're not a great pass rush team. Now, they
- 29:11Speaker 4: have played a lot of man coverage through two games.
- 29:13Speaker 4: So you've got to call your man beaters, you know,
- 29:15Speaker 4: your man beater routes. But they don't rush the quarterback
- 29:18Speaker 4: particularly well, which that'll change a little bit next week
- 29:22Speaker 4: when Cam Jurgens has to play against Aaron Donald. But
- 29:26Speaker 4: the Bears are not a big pass rush team as
- 29:28Speaker 4: of now. Again, two games, all we have is what
- 29:30Speaker 4: the two games show. So we're not going to sit
- 29:33Speaker 4: here and say they can't rush the quarterback for the
- 29:34Speaker 4: whole season. But they've not been able to do that
- 29:37Speaker 4: well through two games. Right.
- 29:38Speaker 2: And there is a.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Bright side of the conversation that I'll move to is
- 29:41Speaker 1: that the Eagles passing offense has somehow been able to
- 29:43Speaker 1: overcome its issues in the run game. And here you
- 29:47Speaker 1: have an opportunity, Greg, against a Bears defense that you
- 29:50Speaker 1: just mentioned. Now, Adam and I, and I'm sure you are,
- 29:52Speaker 1: are big fans of Dennis Allen. We think he does
- 29:54Speaker 1: a really good job.
- 29:55Speaker 4: I know Dennis. And by the way, one question I
- 29:58Speaker 4: always ask when I do get a chance to talk
- 30:00Speaker 4: to coaches more in the off season, you know, if
- 30:02Speaker 4: I'm talking to an offensive coach, I'll say which defensive
- 30:04Speaker 4: coaches give you the most trouble or the toughest to
- 30:06Speaker 4: play against, you know, talking to a defensive guy, which
- 30:09Speaker 4: offensive coach and Dennis Allen's name always comes up when
- 30:12Speaker 4: you ask offensive coaches, who's very difficult to play against. But,
- 30:17Speaker 4: you know, he also is a guy that plays to
- 30:19Speaker 4: his personnel because I've had that conversation with him, you know,
- 30:22Speaker 4: whereas he, if he's not comfortable with players at a
- 30:25Speaker 4: certain position, He will change what he does. He's not
- 30:28Speaker 4: a guy that does the same thing regardless of who's playing.
- 30:32Speaker 2: What do you think there is to look for with
- 30:34Speaker 2: what he does?
- 30:35Speaker 1: So, for example, the Titans, I thought, did a way
- 30:38Speaker 1: better job with Robert Sala, right, of keeping Hurts contained
- 30:42Speaker 1: in the pocket by stunting up the middle, clocking up
- 30:45Speaker 1: the middle, rushing wide instead of inside.
- 30:47Speaker 4: They stunted a lot. They stunted a lot.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Is that something that the Bears frequently do?
- 30:52Speaker 4: Yeah, every coach has that in their playbook. It's just
- 30:55Speaker 4: a matter of if they choose to do it, depending
- 30:57Speaker 4: on who the opponent is. I mean, look, I think
- 31:00Speaker 4: Hurts has been really, really good this year, and he's
- 31:02Speaker 4: certainly been good from the pocket. That's not been an issue.
- 31:05Speaker 4: But I still think that when teams think about playing
- 31:07Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts, they definitely have a plan for making sure
- 31:10Speaker 4: he's not going to beat you with his legs. Which, again,
- 31:15Speaker 4: when people say that, sometimes people... people take that the
- 31:18Speaker 4: wrong way, meaning, well, we, you know, we just want
- 31:20Speaker 4: him to sit there and throw. That's not what they're saying.
- 31:23Speaker 4: You know, there's a lot of people that would say,
- 31:24Speaker 4: let's keep Josh Allen in the pocket too, or Patrick
- 31:27Speaker 4: Mahomes in the pocket. That doesn't mean they can't throw.
- 31:30Speaker 4: And Jalen's getting, he's at that level now where, you
- 31:33Speaker 4: know what, he's making throws. And even when he moves,
- 31:36Speaker 4: like the touchdown he hit to Devante Smith last week,
- 31:38Speaker 4: you know, that was really controlled, calculated movement, not the
- 31:42Speaker 4: kind of movement that sometimes we've seen in the past
- 31:44Speaker 4: where it seems like when he moves to his right,
- 31:46Speaker 4: The whole pass play is done. That was really controlled
- 31:50Speaker 4: and calculated. He's playing at a very high level.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Would it be beneficial for the Eagles?
- 31:54Speaker 1: Do you guys think that if they just, even with
- 31:57Speaker 1: their want to establish the run and work the play
- 32:00Speaker 1: action off the run, to just come out throwing a
- 32:02Speaker 1: little bit against a team like the Bears that, you know,
- 32:05Speaker 1: it's not great defensively?
- 32:06Speaker 4: Well, Adam addressed that too, but the Bears have not
- 32:09Speaker 4: brushed the quarterback. Lane Johnson has been unbelievable in the
- 32:13Speaker 4: pass protection going back, you know, couple of years at
- 32:15Speaker 4: right tackle.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 4: I mean, then, then obviously you're not just dropping back
- 32:20Speaker 4: and heaving it down the field, but you know, and
- 32:23Speaker 4: I'm not comparing, you know, Jalen Hurts to let's say
- 32:26Speaker 4: Tom Brady, but we can all think back to games
- 32:28Speaker 4: where the Patriots would come out and Brady would throw
- 32:31Speaker 4: like 12 times in a row. Cause, and they take
- 32:33Speaker 4: five yard throws with no problem because it's, you know what,
- 32:36Speaker 4: it's still a five yard game. Now I don't think
- 32:38Speaker 4: the Eagles will do that, but I think that this
- 32:40Speaker 4: could be a game where they feel that throwing the
- 32:42Speaker 4: football might be the better option.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Jeff, I'd add this. And I'm sure they'll try to
- 32:47Speaker 3: come out running. But if it's not working, absolutely throw
- 32:50Speaker 3: the football. Because Hurts is getting the timing element of
- 32:54Speaker 3: this offense, which is the number one challenge for him.
- 32:56Speaker 3: He's been phenomenal with it. Their pass group is good enough.
- 33:00Speaker 3: We've talked about Cooper. He's clearly involved. Elijah Moore, very
- 33:04Speaker 3: impressed with what he did in training camp. And Wicks
- 33:07Speaker 3: has been, wow. I mean, I didn't expect this from
- 33:10Speaker 3: Dontavion Wicks.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Smitty had his breakout game.
- 33:12Speaker 4: I did.
- 33:15Speaker 3: And honestly, without Goddard, they probably won't do it, but
- 33:19Speaker 3: I would go a little 10 personnel. I like to
- 33:23Speaker 3: see them spread them out because Greg broke down 10
- 33:25Speaker 3: minutes ago. Jalen Johnson's not the same player. Stephenson's undisciplined.
- 33:30Speaker 3: Cam Lewis is going to play at safety, coming over
- 33:32Speaker 3: from Buffalo, I believe.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Who's going to play the slot this week? They've been
- 33:36Speaker 4: playing a bunch of different people.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Oh, the kid, Muhammad, Malik Muhammad.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Oh, yes.
- 33:40Speaker 5: He's a good player, but he's a rookie. But he's
- 33:41Speaker 5: going to be a very good player. All right, but
- 33:44Speaker 5: the bottom line is, Jeff, spread them out. They're not
- 33:46Speaker 5: deep a corner. See, what people misinterpret sometimes is they
- 33:50Speaker 5: have to go after this guy or this team. It
- 33:52Speaker 5: doesn't mean throw the ball 50 times. It means you
- 33:55Speaker 5: should have better success by maybe upping the passing volume
- 34:00Speaker 5: a little, but it doesn't have to be 45 times.
- 34:01Speaker 3: It could be 35 times.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Correct.
- 34:03Speaker 3: But you can be aggressive because... The tape shows they're
- 34:06Speaker 3: not good enough. And Finnaman, by the way, I mean,
- 34:09Speaker 3: we loved him for the draft, but he's a rookie.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Keep one thing in mind. If they continue to play man,
- 34:13Speaker 4: and they may not because of Jalen Hurts. Keep that
- 34:15Speaker 4: in mind. You know, they obviously have played a lot
- 34:19Speaker 4: of man, and they got burned playing man against Bryce Young,
- 34:22Speaker 4: who's a very deceptively slippery mover. Not a powerful mover
- 34:26Speaker 4: like Jalen, but deceptively slippery. If they choose to play
- 34:30Speaker 4: a lot of man, what that often does is it
- 34:33Speaker 4: takes your corners out of run support. because if receivers
- 34:36Speaker 4: run routes, the corners have to run with them. So
- 34:38Speaker 4: they're out of run support. So it also can help
- 34:41Speaker 4: you run game theoretically.
- 34:43Speaker 1: That was my next question to you, Greg, about the
- 34:45Speaker 1: Paris defense. What was the difference between week one with
- 34:50Speaker 1: giving up explosive? Now, granted, when you score 59, you're
- 34:52Speaker 1: probably going to give up a few, but week two,
- 34:55Speaker 1: completely different game where they only give, I mean, they lose,
- 34:58Speaker 1: but they only give up nine points, I believe.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 4: I mean, I don't want to say the difference was
- 35:04Speaker 4: quarterback play. I mean, Bryce Young had an unbelievable game
- 35:06Speaker 4: week one. I mean, I don't think it was on
- 35:08Speaker 4: anybody's bingo card that after two weeks, the two passing yard,
- 35:12Speaker 4: passing yards leaders in the NFL are Tyler Shuck and
- 35:14Speaker 4: Bryce Young. I don't think anybody had that on the
- 35:16Speaker 4: bingo card. So, you know, so I think it was,
- 35:20Speaker 4: you know, function two of the quarterback, you know, Wentz
- 35:22Speaker 4: is just, I mean, you could play with Carson Wentz,
- 35:24Speaker 4: but he's just not that guy anymore. And Bryce Young
- 35:27Speaker 4: has actually been playing really, really good football, you know,
- 35:31Speaker 4: He may have just been one of those guys that
- 35:32Speaker 4: needed three or four years to kind of figure out
- 35:35Speaker 4: how to play at his size in the NFL, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 4: because it's not the same as in college football. But,
- 35:42Speaker 4: you know, so I don't I don't want to sit
- 35:43Speaker 4: here and say, man, the Bears defense is now great because,
- 35:46Speaker 4: you know, I don't think that I don't think it is.
- 35:48Speaker 4: And I think it's a beatable defense in some areas.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Like we said, they don't rush the quarterback. And if
- 35:52Speaker 4: you can't rush the quarterback, that's a problem.
- 35:55Speaker 2: There you go.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I just think that as we wrap up the offense,
- 35:58Speaker 1: I don't this tight end thing could be. problematic they
- 36:02Speaker 1: want to have five available targets on every single play
- 36:05Speaker 1: and you know if you're out there in 11 personnel
- 36:08Speaker 1: and your tight end is Johnny Munt because he's the
- 36:10Speaker 1: only healthy one you're really you're really and especially Greg
- 36:13Speaker 1: as you said if Allen decides to play a lot
- 36:15Speaker 1: of zone you're sending four targets out there against six
- 36:19Speaker 1: maybe even seven defenders and that's tough.
- 36:22Speaker 4: And the other thing too is and you never know
- 36:24Speaker 4: with Dennis Allen because he has everything in his playbook
- 36:27Speaker 4: is he does have great blitzes. I remember when he
- 36:30Speaker 4: was with New Orleans, we used to do blitzes with
- 36:33Speaker 4: him that were so well designed and conceived. And again,
- 36:37Speaker 4: I don't know if he's going to do them this week,
- 36:38Speaker 4: but they're in his playbook. And don't forget, obviously Barkley
- 36:42Speaker 4: was injured, but I would bet in a lot of
- 36:45Speaker 4: passing situations, if it gets to that, if they feel
- 36:48Speaker 4: they're going to get pressure, it would not surprise me
- 36:50Speaker 4: to see Shipley be the third down back.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Oh, that's another great point. If Barkley's really, I mean,
- 36:55Speaker 1: Barkley's pass protection is not great to begin with, right?
- 36:57Speaker 1: If he's hurt and he's off the field and you've
- 37:00Speaker 1: got Shipley, who we like, good in the passing game,
- 37:03Speaker 1: did a nice job on some blitz pickups. But, you know,
- 37:05Speaker 1: if you're basically in third and long quite a bit
- 37:09Speaker 1: and you're out there trying to make first downs without Barkley,
- 37:11Speaker 1: without Dallas Goddard on the field, it's not exactly the best,
- 37:14Speaker 1: you know, I mean, we're talking all about the Bears
- 37:16Speaker 1: and their quarterback, but the Eagles are really hamstrung here.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Could be, you know, we'll see. I mean, Look, I
- 37:23Speaker 4: really like their receiving core. You know, obviously they don't
- 37:25Speaker 4: have the guy who people think is a big-time number one,
- 37:28Speaker 4: although Devonta Smith is certainly a very, very good receiver
- 37:31Speaker 4: and just so understands how to play the position. Wicks
- 37:34Speaker 4: is good. I mean, they've got solid receivers. The next
- 37:37Speaker 4: step now, and again, he's a rookie and he missed
- 37:39Speaker 4: a ton of time in the offseason, but they traded
- 37:41Speaker 4: up to get Makai Lemon. So they're expecting him to
- 37:44Speaker 4: be a meaningful part. It doesn't mean he has to
- 37:46Speaker 4: go 80 for 1,200, but he has to be a
- 37:48Speaker 4: meaningful part of their pass game.
- 37:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Adam, you're saying?
- 37:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I was just going to say with Barkley, remember
- 37:53Speaker 3: with the neck roll, whatever you want to call it there,
- 37:56Speaker 3: you can't have him in pass protection.
- 37:58Speaker 1: No.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Shipley, as Mannion talked about, he's improved. And I mean,
- 38:04Speaker 3: I trust his word. He's coaching him. And Will is
- 38:07Speaker 3: explosive in the pass game. But the one thing, Jeff,
- 38:10Speaker 3: his screen game has been atrocious for years. You got
- 38:14Speaker 3: to sell it. Greg talked about that. I don't know
- 38:18Speaker 3: if it was our Patreon group or not, but I
- 38:19Speaker 3: know he talked about it on one of our platforms.
- 38:22Speaker 3: You've got to sell the screen a little bit better.
- 38:26Speaker 3: It's got to be better now.
- 38:27Speaker 2: For sure.
- 38:28Speaker 3: For sure.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I mean, there's got to be two goals here for
- 38:31Speaker 1: the Eagles. It's to stop living in third and long
- 38:33Speaker 1: so much. And as Greg pointed out, it's got to
- 38:35Speaker 1: be because of their injuries to get Makai Lemon more involved.
- 38:39Speaker 1: To me, those are two really big goals for the
- 38:41Speaker 1: Eagles in this week.
- 38:42Speaker 2: All right, let's flip it.
- 38:43Speaker 1: So the Bears offense, which rolled up 59 points in
- 38:47Speaker 1: the first half, Week one against the Panthers and then
- 38:50Speaker 1: just three against the Vikings. We know what they want
- 38:53Speaker 1: to do. We know foundationally they run the ball well
- 38:56Speaker 1: and they want to establish the run. And Greg, what
- 38:59Speaker 1: I noticed is they are really starting to lean into
- 39:02Speaker 1: that 13 personnel.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Craze that swept the league last year.
- 39:06Speaker 1: They are getting their rookie Sam Roush on the field
- 39:08Speaker 1: with Cole Komet and with Colston Loveland. What have you
- 39:11Speaker 1: noticed from that specific alignment?
- 39:14Speaker 4: Well, the teams that do it, the key to 13 personnel,
- 39:17Speaker 4: if you're going to play at a meaningful percentage of
- 39:19Speaker 4: the time and they can do this right now, the
- 39:22Speaker 4: Rams lead the league at 56 of their snaps. The
- 39:25Speaker 4: Bills at 34%. I forget what the Bears number is,
- 39:29Speaker 4: but it's high, you know, relatively speaking.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they were tied with the Falcons, I think, right
- 39:33Speaker 1: around like 18% to 24%.
- 39:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I just had a brain freeze there. I remember
- 39:38Speaker 4: looking at it. The key, if you're going to play
- 39:41Speaker 4: 13 personnel, and every coach will tell you this because
- 39:45Speaker 4: I've had this conversation, but I knew this anyway from
- 39:47Speaker 4: watching the tape, from watching the Rams last year, is
- 39:50Speaker 4: you have to be able to run your 11 personnel
- 39:54Speaker 4: pass game concepts when you have 13 personnel on the field. Otherwise,
- 39:58Speaker 4: you're limiting yourself. Right. And they can do that with Loveland.
- 40:02Speaker 4: They can actually do it with Komet. Yep. And I
- 40:05Speaker 4: watched Sam Roush last year coming out of college at Stanford,
- 40:07Speaker 4: and even though he was predominantly an in-line blocker because
- 40:10Speaker 4: he's 6'6, close to 270, he is not a plodding,
- 40:15Speaker 4: you know, guy. I mean, and he ran, he had
- 40:19Speaker 4: a great combine. If you look at his combine numbers,
- 40:21Speaker 4: he was explosive for his size at the combine. So
- 40:24Speaker 4: they actually have three tight ends, guys, that can be
- 40:28Speaker 4: vertical seam guys, and Loveland can run wide receiver routes,
- 40:32Speaker 4: and so can Kemet. So they can run their 11-personnel
- 40:35Speaker 4: pass game with 13 personnel on the field. That's the
- 40:39Speaker 4: critical piece.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Jeff, remember we talked about heading into the season, we
- 40:43Speaker 3: were trying to figure out how much DeGene would be
- 40:44Speaker 3: at safety? This is the game we thought it would start,
- 40:47Speaker 3: where they would play a ton of 12 personnel.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Now, Greg brought up the 13 personnel, so we know
- 40:52Speaker 3: where Coop is going to be playing. I mean, he's
- 40:55Speaker 3: probably going to play a lot of safety in this game. Yeah.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Well, so here's what's interesting, right? This is, to me,
- 41:01Speaker 1: the big cat and mouse of this game. We know
- 41:03Speaker 1: that Vic Fangio... likes to stay in nickel as much
- 41:08Speaker 1: as he possibly can and has faced put nickel on
- 41:11Speaker 1: the field a lot against 12 personnel and it they've
- 41:14Speaker 1: done a good job they've been able to stop the
- 41:16Speaker 1: run and it gives them that ability to have dajean
- 41:19Speaker 1: defending the good tight ends who can catch the ball
- 41:21Speaker 1: yeah what will he do against 13 personnel because the
- 41:25Speaker 1: eagles have been I guess they've been okay against the run,
- 41:28Speaker 1: but they've allowed too many big runs for who they
- 41:30Speaker 1: are already through two weeks. So I'm very curious, Greg,
- 41:33Speaker 1: to see if Nick feels he can play nickel against
- 41:37Speaker 1: 13 personnel. I'm curious to see if Ben Johnson dares
- 41:40Speaker 1: him to try to do it and then run out
- 41:42Speaker 1: of it. I think that there's a huge cat and
- 41:44Speaker 1: mouse element to this matchup.
- 41:46Speaker 4: I think what they're going to do again, just a thought.
- 41:50Speaker 4: I just thought of this as you were talking. I
- 41:51Speaker 4: wasn't thinking, you know, I think they're going to do
- 41:54Speaker 4: something similar to what they did in the Super Bowl
- 41:56Speaker 4: against the Chiefs if they line up Komet and Loveland-Wyatt.
- 42:00Speaker 4: I think they're going to let Mitchell and Wolin play
- 42:03Speaker 4: pure man and bunch everything up in the middle of
- 42:06Speaker 4: the field because Ben Johnson really likes to work the
- 42:09Speaker 4: middle of the field, and they're very, very good at it. Now, granted,
- 42:12Speaker 4: it's not Caleb Williams, but he can't change his whole
- 42:15Speaker 4: pass game philosophy in a week. So it would not
- 42:18Speaker 4: surprise me if they do that against– Certain looks. I mean,
- 42:22Speaker 4: obviously they may not do it if the wide receivers
- 42:24Speaker 4: are out there, but if it's Loveland and commit split,
- 42:27Speaker 4: it would not surprise me if they have Warren and
- 42:30Speaker 4: Mitchell essentially play zero man and try to squeeze everything
- 42:34Speaker 4: in the middle of the field, especially if it's Keenum.
- 42:37Speaker 4: And we don't know, you know, because Keenum's, you know, look,
- 42:40Speaker 4: the guys, I love guys like Keenum. He's going to
- 42:42Speaker 4: play 13, 14 years in the league. It's incredible that
- 42:44Speaker 4: he can do that. You know, it's had an unbelievable career,
- 42:47Speaker 4: but he's not going to be throwing the ball, you know,
- 42:49Speaker 4: deep sideline outside the numbers.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Will it be harder for them to execute playing man
- 42:55Speaker 1: defense with their corners if the Bears use a lot
- 42:58Speaker 1: of those condensed formations and a lot of motion?
- 43:00Speaker 4: Yeah, then it gets harder. And then you have to
- 43:02Speaker 4: also decide, and I don't know the answer to this,
- 43:04Speaker 4: so I'm not going to pretend to, you have to
- 43:06Speaker 4: decide how you want to deal with their motions. Do
- 43:08Speaker 4: you stay static? Do you try to make any adjustments?
- 43:12Speaker 4: Because even staying static is an adjustment. So I don't
- 43:16Speaker 4: know how they'll play against all the motions. And the
- 43:19Speaker 4: other question is, If it's Keenum, it's going to be
- 43:23Speaker 4: Bajor or Keenum, obviously. Will they do as much shifting
- 43:26Speaker 4: in motion? You know, because there's a timing to all that.
- 43:30Speaker 4: That's the operational part of the position that, you know,
- 43:33Speaker 4: they may not be as on top of as Caleb Williams.
- 43:36Speaker 2: You're a Rolling Stones fan, right, Greg?
- 43:39Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 43:39Speaker 2: You know what Adam and I are right now? Under
- 43:43Speaker 2: your thumb, brother.
- 43:45Speaker 3: I'm on the screen.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Well then you probably know that after that song they
- 43:51Speaker 4: had to do another song because it was considered to
- 43:54Speaker 4: be really bad you know about women so the song
- 43:58Speaker 4: they did in response to that was ruby tuesday How
- 44:01Speaker 4: about that?
- 44:02Speaker 2: Good trivia. Good trivia. Now, can we see your pretty face?
- 44:05Speaker 2: You want to take that?
- 44:05Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 4: Sorry about that.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 44:08Speaker 4: But yeah, they had to do Ruby Tuesday and do
- 44:10Speaker 4: a song about an independent woman, you know, who does
- 44:13Speaker 4: her thing because Under My Thumb, you know, was not
- 44:17Speaker 4: really a real positive song about a woman.
- 44:20Speaker 1: True understood understood i may have to in the editing
- 44:22Speaker 1: process paint the screen black just to uh.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Eliminate there you go this is what.
- 44:27Speaker 2: We saw by the way greg if you're curious.
- 44:30Speaker 4: We have a little a little rolling stone segment there.
- 44:33Speaker 3: All right nice people love their steely dan reference by
- 44:35Speaker 3: the way last yeah yeah we got some comments.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Oh the mechanized hub of another world.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Yes yeah yeah they loved it anyway.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Uh all right so interesting to your point greg uh
- 44:45Speaker 1: did a little analytical data study and the bears, they
- 44:49Speaker 1: are playing a lot of 13 personnel. Ironically, their, their
- 44:53Speaker 1: EPA in both run and play are not good.
- 44:56Speaker 4: No, I know.
- 44:57Speaker 1: The only thing that is good though, their EPA is
- 45:01Speaker 1: when they pass out.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Of 13 personnel.
- 45:04Speaker 1: So to your point, they are finding some mismatches with
- 45:07Speaker 1: those tight ends. You saw, I'm sure, you know, the,
- 45:09Speaker 1: the beautiful touchdown that Caleb Williams wound up throwing out
- 45:13Speaker 1: of 13 personnel to commit was just I mean, I
- 45:15Speaker 1: don't know if Bajent can make that throw.
- 45:17Speaker 2: That was Caleb Williams.
- 45:18Speaker 4: I mean, that was a great throw.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:20Speaker 4: I mean, guys can make it. Can they make it
- 45:22Speaker 4: in that situation? Yeah. I mean, any quarterback can actually
- 45:26Speaker 4: throw that ball.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:28Speaker 4: In a game like that, yeah.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Right. But he kind of threw it falling away off
- 45:32Speaker 1: his back foot in a way that only Caleb could.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Right.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Unbelievable throw. And obviously, we're going to talk about their
- 45:38Speaker 4: run game because that's a really major part.
- 45:40Speaker 3: And the receivers, too. Yeah. Yes.
- 45:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:42Speaker 1: So let's, well, that's the 13 personnel was a lead
- 45:45Speaker 1: into the run game. Now we were just talking about Barkley, right.
- 45:49Speaker 1: And not trusting it. I'm watching Deandre Swift the last
- 45:51Speaker 1: two weeks and he is fine. He is so good
- 45:54Speaker 1: at getting skinny. There was some really tight crevices. I mean,
- 45:57Speaker 1: he looks like someone who has complete comfort in the
- 46:00Speaker 1: rushing the run system and just finding what's there.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:05Speaker 4: Well, this is I did a piece on this the
- 46:07Speaker 4: first week of the season after I studied their run
- 46:09Speaker 4: game a year ago in detail this summer. And they
- 46:12Speaker 4: are predominantly a right-handed running team because they run behind
- 46:16Speaker 4: Jonah Jackson and Darnell Wright, who are big-time run game maulers. Now,
- 46:21Speaker 4: it's not every run. I don't want people to think
- 46:23Speaker 4: every run is to the right. Obviously, it's not. But
- 46:25Speaker 4: that's sort of foundationally where they run. And Swift is
- 46:30Speaker 4: a really good cutback runner, so you've got to be
- 46:32Speaker 4: really careful with him. He doesn't necessarily stay to the right.
- 46:36Speaker 4: Minungi is a little more of a stay-on-your-path runner, but
- 46:39Speaker 4: he's physical and powerful and And he can get hard yards.
- 46:42Speaker 4: And he's got a little more juice than you think.
- 46:45Speaker 4: Not the kind of juice where it'll go 70 yards. But,
- 46:47Speaker 4: I mean, he's a little quicker through the first and
- 46:50Speaker 4: second level than you might think.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Greg, on the scheme, when you watch tape of other teams,
- 46:58Speaker 3: is this unique the way that Ben Johnson, because we
- 47:00Speaker 3: know Ben Johnson designs it. Is it kind of a
- 47:03Speaker 3: unique run scheme to you? Well, I wouldn't.
- 47:06Speaker 4: Unique's one of those words I wouldn't use because it's
- 47:08Speaker 4: not like he's the only guy doing anything. But I
- 47:10Speaker 4: will say this. He has a great feel for understanding
- 47:13Speaker 4: how shifts and motions impact defensive leverage and adjustment. You know,
- 47:19Speaker 4: so it's like when Joe Gibbs started doing all this
- 47:21Speaker 4: back in the day. And back then, everybody said it
- 47:24Speaker 4: was window dressing. That term should never be used. Motion
- 47:27Speaker 4: is never window dressing. There's a reason why. that coaches
- 47:31Speaker 4: use motion. It's not just, oh, let's throw a motion
- 47:33Speaker 4: in for fun and games. They do this. And I
- 47:37Speaker 4: would say Ben Johnson has a great feel for how
- 47:40Speaker 4: to use shifts and motions to force defenses to react.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Like last year against the Bears-Eagles game on the Black Friday,
- 47:49Speaker 4: I think it was Mnangne who had like a 30-yard run,
- 47:52Speaker 4: and there was motion across the formation. And I don't
- 47:54Speaker 4: know if he expected this, but Blankenship, who was on
- 47:56Speaker 4: one side, just started running back into the deep middle
- 48:00Speaker 4: and they got caught shorthanded on the play side they
- 48:04Speaker 4: didn't have enough bodies you know so again i don't
- 48:06Speaker 4: know if ben johnson knew that he'd get that reaction
- 48:08Speaker 4: only he knows that you know but they're very good
- 48:11Speaker 4: at those kinds of things yeah.
- 48:14Speaker 1: I mean obviously when you use especially tight end motion
- 48:16Speaker 1: greg i mean you give yourself uh especially if you're
- 48:19Speaker 1: using maybe like misdirection where you motion the tight end
- 48:21Speaker 1: away from the play side and then all of a
- 48:23Speaker 1: sudden On the weak side, you have a mathematical advantage.
- 48:26Speaker 2: You have an extra blocker.
- 48:27Speaker 4: That's what you're looking for.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's part of the brilliance of that kind
- 48:31Speaker 1: of scheme.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Or you're looking for, you know, sometimes if a team
- 48:35Speaker 4: is a zone-based scheme like the Eagles, you know, you're
- 48:37Speaker 4: looking for maybe a motion with a tight end and
- 48:40Speaker 4: the second level just bumps over a yard, and that's
- 48:43Speaker 4: up a better angle and leverage block for an offensive
- 48:47Speaker 4: lineman climbing to the second level. It doesn't seem like
- 48:50Speaker 4: much when you're watching a game, but, you know, a
- 48:52Speaker 4: yard– is a big deal in the NFL. So little
- 48:56Speaker 4: things like that can change an entire run game and
- 48:58Speaker 4: make it better.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:02Speaker 1: I know we've had this conversation before, and sometimes it's
- 49:05Speaker 1: hard to tell, but did anything jump out to you
- 49:07Speaker 1: of why the Eagles have been a little leaky in
- 49:09Speaker 1: allowing some runs that were atypical of them.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Just longer runs than normal?
- 49:14Speaker 4: Well, there were a couple last week. I know that
- 49:16Speaker 4: people you know, got excited about Powerhead, the 18-yarder. Spears
- 49:20Speaker 4: had that long run on third and whatever it was,
- 49:22Speaker 4: which was kind of a fluky play. You know, sometimes
- 49:27Speaker 4: runs like that, and it's always hard to know because
- 49:29Speaker 4: I'm never certain how safeties are taught, but sometimes those
- 49:34Speaker 4: runs come about because, you know, just safety angles are
- 49:37Speaker 4: not exactly what you think they should be. You know,
- 49:40Speaker 4: I can tell you they probably one reason I'm sure
- 49:44Speaker 4: they signed Kenny Moore. And again, we don't know what
- 49:46Speaker 4: they're going to do. But I didn't think Epps saw
- 49:49Speaker 4: things really well last week. And look, Epps has had
- 49:53Speaker 4: a really nice career. He's probably going to be a
- 49:55Speaker 4: 10 year pro and play in the league, you know,
- 49:57Speaker 4: a number of years. But I think if you're being
- 50:00Speaker 4: honest about him and the tape, he's probably not a
- 50:03Speaker 4: starting safety in the NFL right now. And they have
- 50:06Speaker 4: to start him. I mean, you can only dance with
- 50:08Speaker 4: a girl who brung you. That's who they have on
- 50:09Speaker 4: the roster.
- 50:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 50:12Speaker 4: But, you know, I think they... You know, and I
- 50:14Speaker 4: think Makuba is an incredibly aggressive player, and I love
- 50:18Speaker 4: the way he plays, but I think every once in
- 50:21Speaker 4: a while, because he's so aggressive, he's going to take
- 50:23Speaker 4: a bad step or two. It's just built into the
- 50:26Speaker 4: way he plays. But he's also going to make a
- 50:27Speaker 4: lot of good plays.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Go ahead, Adam.
- 50:32Speaker 3: I just want to add this. I want to see
- 50:34Speaker 3: what happens. Greg talked about Epps, you know, you would
- 50:37Speaker 3: rather not be starting. I'm interested to see, because he
- 50:41Speaker 3: did acknowledge that Michael Carter could get, Vic did, could
- 50:44Speaker 3: get more snaps. Michael Carter is the only one, the
- 50:46Speaker 3: guy Vic can go to, who was a college safety,
- 50:48Speaker 3: really has played at the NFL level. I'm interested to
- 50:51Speaker 3: see what kind of run he gets, because Epps really
- 50:54Speaker 3: kind of, he won the job. Like, he won it clean.
- 50:57Speaker 3: It was fairly close, but he won it. But Michael
- 51:01Speaker 3: Carter's younger, and has a little bit better versatility. I'm
- 51:04Speaker 3: just interested to see if he'll take some steps from him.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree.
- 51:08Speaker 1: And I think also, to Greg's point, in this game particularly,
- 51:13Speaker 1: I think when we talk about run defense, it's going
- 51:15Speaker 1: to be a conversation about your middle at your linebacker
- 51:18Speaker 1: level and your safety level and even your outside corner level.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Whereas, I'm not trying to.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Absolve the D-line, but they'll have to set the edge.
- 51:25Speaker 1: They'll have to have that gap integrity. But the Bears
- 51:27Speaker 1: are going to run. They're going to run well. The
- 51:30Speaker 1: Eagles will... need to have eye discipline. They'll have to
- 51:33Speaker 1: tackle well. They'll have to wrap up. And that's generally
- 51:36Speaker 1: a second and third level conversation.
- 51:39Speaker 4: Yeah, and I will say this. And again, I always
- 51:41Speaker 4: caveat it because I don't know how guys are coached.
- 51:44Speaker 4: And you know me well enough to know I don't
- 51:45Speaker 4: rip guys, you know. But the tape, you see things
- 51:48Speaker 4: on tape. Last week in particular, and again, I'm not
- 51:52Speaker 4: going to sit here and say he had a bad
- 51:54Speaker 4: game because I don't know if he, maybe he executed
- 51:57Speaker 4: his assignments the way he was supposed to and it
- 51:59Speaker 4: just didn't work out. But Jihad Campbell was a non-factor
- 52:02Speaker 4: in last week's game. And, again, like I said, this
- 52:06Speaker 4: is not– I'm not sitting here saying he had a
- 52:07Speaker 4: bad game because I don't know. Maybe they graded him well.
- 52:10Speaker 4: I can't answer that. Because sometimes a linebacker would have
- 52:15Speaker 4: 10 tackles and you watch the tape and they're all
- 52:17Speaker 4: 10 yards down the field and he didn't necessarily have
- 52:19Speaker 4: a good game. But you'll look on a stat sheet
- 52:20Speaker 4: and he had 10 tackles. So I don't want to
- 52:22Speaker 4: say– but all I'm saying is Campbell was not really–
- 52:25Speaker 4: like I almost didn't feel like he was in the
- 52:26Speaker 4: game very much.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I mean, Adam and I had a few– field somewhat,
- 52:30Speaker 1: I would say ridiculous questions all week about if the
- 52:33Speaker 1: Eagles will be getting Jeremiah Trotter on the field in.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Place of Jihad Campbell. And I, you know, it's a,
- 52:38Speaker 2: it's week three, everyone.
- 52:39Speaker 1: So a guy can have a bad game and that's
- 52:42Speaker 1: not what, you know, Greg's point is just that he didn't.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:46Speaker 4: But he's such a great athlete that the hope is
- 52:49Speaker 4: that just his athletic traits, you know, can, can allow
- 52:52Speaker 4: him to be some kind of impact player, you know, again,
- 52:54Speaker 4: that doesn't mean he has to have 15 tackles a game,
- 52:57Speaker 4: but it's just, And it's just sometimes I watch tape
- 53:03Speaker 4: and then I look at a stat sheet because normally
- 53:05Speaker 4: I don't look at stats before the game because that
- 53:07Speaker 4: colors how you see the game. And I don't want
- 53:09Speaker 4: to do that. So sometimes I'll watch a game and
- 53:12Speaker 4: I'll see a linebacker. So-and-so had 16 tackles. And I'm like, God,
- 53:14Speaker 4: I didn't even notice them, you know, because it depends
- 53:18Speaker 4: where they are and what kind of plays they are. Right, right.
- 53:22Speaker 1: What's the one matchup, Adam, because I know we should
- 53:25Speaker 1: talk about these Bears wide receivers.
- 53:26Speaker 2: They're pretty good. There's Luther Burton.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Now, Loveland is off to a– he just hasn't had
- 53:31Speaker 1: the rhythm yet in the offense, but we know what
- 53:33Speaker 1: he can do from the tight end spot. Which is
- 53:36Speaker 1: the guy, though, that you look at and say, this
- 53:38Speaker 1: is the one that I'm worried or concerned.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Or– Luther Burton. Yeah, Luther Burton can run. I mean,
- 53:43Speaker 3: he's– Ben Johnson talked him up before the season started.
- 53:46Speaker 3: He calls the plays. He designs everything. Like, this is
- 53:50Speaker 3: his guy. You know, he came in with Ben last year.
- 53:53Speaker 3: So this is his first year as a full-time starter.
- 53:56Speaker 3: He can run.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's funny you mentioned that because I
- 53:58Speaker 4: don't know if you guys ever watch. He does a
- 54:01Speaker 4: great job with it. Kurt Warner study ball, his evaluation.
- 54:05Speaker 4: He did Caleb Williams week one. And of course I
- 54:07Speaker 4: watched Caleb, you know, and I noticed these things and
- 54:10Speaker 4: because they scored 59, if you said one thing that
- 54:12Speaker 4: was not glowingly positive, people thought you were an idiot.
- 54:15Speaker 4: But of course, when Kurt Warner says that he's not
- 54:17Speaker 4: an idiot, you know, and nor am I actually when
- 54:20Speaker 4: I say it, but, Kurt Warner knows a lot of
- 54:23Speaker 4: the same things I noticed. And the only reason I'm
- 54:24Speaker 4: mentioning it is because Loveland would have had a huge
- 54:28Speaker 4: game if Williams did not have, and I don't want
- 54:31Speaker 4: to say had issues, but if he saw him and
- 54:34Speaker 4: threw on time to where he was supposed to throw it,
- 54:37Speaker 4: Loveland would have had a huge game.
- 54:38Speaker 2: It wasn't in the end zone twice, I believe, right, Craig?
- 54:41Speaker 4: It wasn't that he wasn't involved. The ball should have
- 54:43Speaker 4: been thrown to him like four times. That wasn't. And
- 54:46Speaker 4: then he would have had six catches for 120 yards
- 54:48Speaker 4: and we'd be saying, man, is he off to a
- 54:50Speaker 4: great start? Of course.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Of course.
- 54:52Speaker 1: All right. By the way, Greg, the way that Ben
- 54:56Speaker 1: Johnson uses Luther Burden, is that similar to the Amon
- 54:59Speaker 1: Ross St. Brown role from the way he used him
- 55:02Speaker 1: in the Lions offense?
- 55:04Speaker 4: I don't think not quite.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I'm not asking if they're the same player. I was
- 55:10Speaker 1: just more about usage and where.
- 55:12Speaker 4: They line up. I almost feel like, and this might
- 55:14Speaker 4: be crazy, I almost feel like the guy who's being
- 55:17Speaker 4: used and deployed in that way more so is Kalief Raymond.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Had a big game.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 55:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:25Speaker 3: Very interesting.
- 55:28Speaker 1: And of course, who was the guy in Detroit that
- 55:30Speaker 1: Ben ever would ever was the veteran that all of
- 55:32Speaker 1: a sudden would have a big game when it wasn't
- 55:34Speaker 1: Williams or St.
- 55:35Speaker 3: Brown.
- 55:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:39Speaker 4: There's a solid number three and just a really good guy.
- 55:44Speaker 4: And from what I understand, a great guy to have
- 55:46Speaker 4: on your team, just a really solid number three, wherever
- 55:49Speaker 4: he's been.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:50Speaker 1: It really is interesting how Johnson took what he had
- 55:52Speaker 1: in Detroit becomes Bears head. It gives himself the same
- 55:55Speaker 1: kind of thunder and lightning running back tandem with Menon
- 55:58Speaker 1: guy and Swift that he had with Montgomery and with, um, Gibbs.
- 56:02Speaker 1: And then, you know, obviously he's got himself some good
- 56:04Speaker 1: receivers and tight ends.
- 56:08Speaker 3: Greg, one thing Roman doing today, we haven't really talked
- 56:10Speaker 3: to him at all here. Just real quick on him.
- 56:12Speaker 3: What have you seen from him since he's been in
- 56:14Speaker 3: the league?
- 56:15Speaker 4: Um, again, he was a high pick. Um, I think
- 56:19Speaker 4: that he struggles to separate. I think he's a big
- 56:22Speaker 4: guy who can make contested catches, but I think he
- 56:25Speaker 4: struggles to separate. I don't view him, and I don't
- 56:28Speaker 4: know if he was viewed that way when the Bears
- 56:30Speaker 4: took him, but I don't view him as a true
- 56:31Speaker 4: boundary X.
- 56:34Speaker 3: Interesting. Wow.
- 56:36Speaker 2: In that case, they don't really have a true boundary X, correct?
- 56:38Speaker 4: No, but, you know, and I guess in Detroit, you
- 56:41Speaker 4: could say Jamison Williams was that guy. He was deployed
- 56:44Speaker 4: that way.
- 56:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:45Speaker 4: But I don't think Ben Johnson's offense demands that.
- 56:48Speaker 3: Got it. Right.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Okay, good stuff.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Look, that's, to me, the big question, wrapping up defense,
- 56:54Speaker 1: does Vic get the pressure he needs from his top
- 56:57Speaker 1: three with Grenard in there.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Or will he feel the need to have to blitz
- 57:01Speaker 2: a little bit more?
- 57:02Speaker 1: Will the Eagles be able to stop the run at
- 57:04Speaker 1: a nickel, or does he have to play base more
- 57:07Speaker 1: than he wants to? I think these are all really
- 57:08Speaker 1: fascinating questions that will materialize on Monday night.
- 57:12Speaker 4: And does he have to, instead of showing– quarters looks
- 57:16Speaker 4: all the time. If they can't stop the run, does
- 57:18Speaker 4: he have to bring the safety down, you know, as
- 57:21Speaker 4: part of the initial look to make sure that he's
- 57:23Speaker 4: got that gap absolutely filled.
- 57:25Speaker 2: And who, so if they do have to, let's say
- 57:27Speaker 2: Vic is going to play base a.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Lot against safety and base.
- 57:31Speaker 2: And who's going to be the safety that comes into
- 57:33Speaker 2: the box though, to make.
- 57:34Speaker 4: It either Dajin or Makuba, you know, I would assume
- 57:37Speaker 4: Dajin more often than not, but also the bears might
- 57:41Speaker 4: think that, that that's going to be the case. And
- 57:44Speaker 4: Vic would not want to be predictable.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Correct. Really interesting cat and mouse.
- 57:48Speaker 1: All right, let's get to do what we do best,
- 57:49Speaker 1: and that is predict the score and the player of
- 57:52Speaker 1: the game.
- 57:52Speaker 4: I think Jalen Hurts last week. Come on, give me
- 57:54Speaker 4: some credit.
- 57:54Speaker 3: You did.
- 57:55Speaker 2: You did a great job.
- 57:56Speaker 4: I knew he was going to look at that. I
- 57:58Speaker 4: knew the game was going to go exactly that way.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Yes, you did.
- 58:01Speaker 1: I mean, you might as well just tell us who's
- 58:04Speaker 1: going to win right now, Greg. Eagles are three and
- 58:07Speaker 1: a half point favorites.
- 58:11Speaker 4: I've gone back and forth on this one because, you know,
- 58:13Speaker 4: the Bears are a good football team. They're not a
- 58:15Speaker 4: bad team. Obviously, if Caleb Williams was playing, I'd pick
- 58:18Speaker 4: the Bears without question. And when I say without question,
- 58:20Speaker 4: I don't mean they'd win 30 to 10, but I'd
- 58:22Speaker 4: pick the Bears.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 58:25Speaker 4: You know, I'm going to pick the Eagles and I'll
- 58:27Speaker 4: tell you why. I just think that Vic Fangio. is,
- 58:32Speaker 4: is just going to have a really good plan for
- 58:34Speaker 4: a quarterback that, you know, either a guy that doesn't
- 58:37Speaker 4: have much experience in Beijing or a guy that hasn't
- 58:39Speaker 4: played a lot, despite that he's seen everything, he hasn't
- 58:42Speaker 4: played a lot of football. Um, so I just think that,
- 58:47Speaker 4: and I think the Eagles will do enough to stop
- 58:49Speaker 4: the run. I'd be very surprised if they run for
- 58:51Speaker 4: 250 yards, you know? Um, and, uh, so I'm going
- 58:55Speaker 4: to pick the Eagles and I'm going to pick them
- 58:57Speaker 4: to win, um, 23 to 17. Okay.
- 59:02Speaker 3: 23, 17.
- 59:03Speaker 2: I like it. And who's the, and you said the
- 59:05Speaker 2: player of the game would be.
- 59:06Speaker 4: Oh, I guess I have to pick that too.
- 59:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:10Speaker 2: And you can't use Hertz again. That's a cop-out.
- 59:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 59:13Speaker 3: No, I won't. Johnny Munt? No, I'm just kidding.
- 59:18Speaker 4: Johnny Munt. All right. This is going to be crazy,
- 59:23Speaker 4: but I think the defense is going to have to
- 59:25Speaker 4: be a big factor in this game. I'm going to pick...
- 59:29Speaker 4: Jordan Davis. Because I think in this game, he's going
- 59:32Speaker 4: to play a lot of snaps.
- 59:34Speaker 3: Wow.
- 59:35Speaker 2: I like it. That is crazy, but awesome. Good job.
- 59:37Speaker 3: I kind of agree with that.
- 59:39Speaker 4: I think he's going to play more snaps this week.
- 59:41Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. Okay. Okay.
- 59:42Speaker 4: Obviously, it's not going to be 110 degrees on the
- 59:45Speaker 4: turf this week.
- 59:46Speaker 3: No, it's going to be nice.
- 59:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:48Speaker 3: I've got it. Eagles 23-13 over the host Bears. And
- 59:52Speaker 3: my player of the game is.
- 59:57Speaker 3: We're going to go with... Hmm. Well, you know what?
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: We've completely missed on the first.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Take your time at it. We have all night.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: I pointed out Jalen Johnson. It's not the same player. Uh-huh.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: No matter what, Stevenson's inconsistent. I'm going with Don TV
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: and Wix has been an absolute stud the first two weeks.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: You took my guy. I was going to take him.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I'll shift.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: You don't have to.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: You don't have to.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: That's true.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: I'll stick with it. I'm like you, Greg. I was
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: back and forth.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Uh, I probably would have picked the bears of Caleb
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Williams was playing. Um, I still think it's going to
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: be a close game, even with the bears on their backup.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I mean, I, I think we can't, as we've talked
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: about all show, not having Dallas Goddard, not having a
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: full Saquon Barkley and their issues up front. We wait
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: week after week for it to just resolve itself, but
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: it doesn't. So I don't think this will be easy
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: sledding for the Eagles. So I'm going to, I'm kicking
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: myself because I still feel like I should pick the bears,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: but I am picking the Eagles to win something.
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: 2320 is a, One thing to keep in mind, the
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: Bears are a heavy under center play action team. And
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: I guarantee Vic has worked on that all week because
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: Cam Ward had those two big plays under center play
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: action last week. One to Ridley for 25 yards and
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: the one to Iron Manor when he jumped over Makuba.
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: So those were big play action plays where the receivers
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: were wide open and the Bears are a big under
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: center play action team. I guarantee that's been a focus
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: of what Vic's coached all week.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: For sure.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: For sure, and I will stick with Dontavion Wicks on
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: my player of the game. So Eagles win 23-20, and
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: that is a clean sweep. According to us, the Eagles
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: go to 3-0. It is said, it is written, and
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: now all that's left is for them to play. That's
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: going to do it for the Inside the Birds pregame show.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: For Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. Everybody
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: enjoy your football watching.
