Latest / College Football Addiction: A Show About All Things College Football / College Football Has A LANE KIFFIN PROBLEM! | LSU Tigers | SEC
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: For the last week, everyone has talked about Lane Kiffin's mouth.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Not enough people talked about his football team, and that's
- 0:08Speaker 1: the problem. Because while the entire country spent the last
- 0:11Speaker 1: week arguing about lawsuits and rosters and pro players and eligibility,
- 0:16Speaker 1: we were guilty of it too at College Football Addiction,
- 0:19Speaker 1: presented by PrizePix.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin.
- 0:23Speaker 1: quietly was building something in Baton Rouge that just walked
- 0:27Speaker 1: onto a football field and did something that LSU hasn't
- 0:30Speaker 1: done in years.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It didn't just beat Clemson, it buried them.
- 0:36Speaker 1: So I want to talk a little bit about what
- 0:38Speaker 1: happened on Saturday night and why the joke everybody's been
- 0:41Speaker 1: making about Lane Kiffin might be the thing that gets
- 0:44Speaker 1: your team run out of its own stadium this season.
- 0:48Speaker 2: We are presented by PrizePix.
- 0:50Speaker 1: We're all new users who play a $ 5 line-up Get
- 0:52Speaker 1: $ 150 in lineups instantly if you win using code HMA.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Let's be honest about how a lot of the country
- 1:01Speaker 1: sees this guy. Lane Kiffin is the coach with the
- 1:05Speaker 1: dog that has its own social media account.
- 1:08Speaker 2: The coach whose.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Dog, Juice, posted a hat reading, Brian Kelly can't run
- 1:13Speaker 1: the damn ball within minutes of Ole Miss beating LSU
- 1:16Speaker 1: last season. The coach who, in the middle of Saturday's
- 1:19Speaker 1: blowout in a live halftime interview, couldn't resist getting one
- 1:24Speaker 1: more shot in about the entire week's controversy. Imagine if
- 1:28Speaker 1: we had pro players, he told ESPN's Holly Rowe, walking
- 1:32Speaker 1: off camera with a grin that he has worn for
- 1:34Speaker 1: the better part of two decades. That's who people think
- 1:38Speaker 1: that Lane Kiffin is. A menace, a jokester, a guy
- 1:41Speaker 1: who treats college football like his personal comedy set. and
- 1:45Speaker 1: somehow keeps getting paid millions of dollars to do it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And look, let's be honest, he is that guy. Nobody's
- 1:54Speaker 1: arguing otherwise. He built his entire public persona on being unbothered, unfiltered,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and completely uninterested in.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Whether anyone approves of him.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But here's what gets lost every single time people focus
- 2:09Speaker 1: on the act.
- 2:10Speaker 2: The act is just a distraction. The football is the point.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Go look at what this guy actually did before he
- 2:20Speaker 1: ever got to Baton Rouge. Six years at Ole Miss,
- 2:24Speaker 1: 55 wins, 19 losses. That's a 740 winning percentage. The
- 2:29Speaker 1: best in program history, not named John Vaught, who coached
- 2:35Speaker 1: Ole Miss and built them into a power generations ago.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Kiffin got to 50 wins faster than anyone else in
- 2:44Speaker 1: Ole Miss history.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Four wins.
- 2:45Speaker 1: 10 win seasons, including an 11 win campaign in 2023
- 2:51Speaker 1: and an 11-1 regular season in 2025.
- 2:55Speaker 2: He built one of the.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Most explosive offenses in the country practically every single year
- 3:00Speaker 1: that he was there. And by the end, he'd built
- 3:02Speaker 1: something even scarier, a defense to go with it. Last year,
- 3:07Speaker 1: his final year in Oxford, Ole Miss ended up 13-2.
- 3:11Speaker 1: They beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to reach the
- 3:14Speaker 1: college football playoff semifinal. They lost a one-possession game to
- 3:18Speaker 1: Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. They were a single score
- 3:21Speaker 1: away from a national championship game appearance. That's not a clown.
- 3:27Speaker 1: That's a guy who treats football like a sideshow. That's
- 3:34Speaker 1: not a clown. That's not a guy who treats football
- 3:37Speaker 1: like a sideshow. That's maybe one of five or six
- 3:40Speaker 1: coaches in America who can walk into a program and
- 3:43Speaker 1: turn it into a national title contender inside of just
- 3:47Speaker 1: a few years. So when LSU handed this guy a
- 3:51Speaker 1: roster with Elite, SEC caliber talent. Talent that, let's be frank,
- 3:57Speaker 1: as good as it is in Oxford, can't reach this ceiling.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The only real question wasn't whether Lane Quiffin could coach.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It was how fast the rest of the country was
- 4:07Speaker 1: going to figure that out. And we all had questions
- 4:11Speaker 1: about how quickly this offense would get going. Well, it
- 4:13Speaker 1: turns out, folks, the answer was exactly one week. Let's
- 4:17Speaker 1: talk about the game that happened on Saturday because The
- 4:20Speaker 1: score alone doesn't do it justice. LSU 51, Clemson 10.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Clemson's worst loss in roughly 30 years. It's the worst
- 4:31Speaker 1: one since a 41-0 beatdown against Syracuse in a bowl
- 4:35Speaker 1: game back in the mid-90s. Aboswini, standing at the podium afterwards,
- 4:39Speaker 1: summed up his own team's performance in less than 10 words.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The best thing about that game is it's over. Now
- 4:47Speaker 1: here's the part that should actually worry the rest of
- 4:49Speaker 1: the SEC. LSU finished with 644 yards of total offense.
- 4:55Speaker 1: 644 against a defense for Clemson that returned real talent
- 5:01Speaker 1: up front. A defense that was supposed to make this
- 5:04Speaker 1: an actual football game. A defense where Dabo finally went
- 5:06Speaker 1: to the portal and got a handful, no, two handfuls
- 5:10Speaker 1: of guys to do a lot better than they did
- 5:13Speaker 1: on Saturday night. The Tigers rushed for over 200 yards
- 5:17Speaker 1: in the first half alone. For context, LSU ranked 126th
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the entire country rushing the ball last season. They
- 5:26Speaker 1: averaged barely 100 yards a game on the ground. A
- 5:29Speaker 1: team that couldn't run the football to save its life
- 5:31Speaker 1: a year ago put up more rushing yards in one
- 5:34Speaker 1: half on Saturday than it managed in any single game
- 5:37Speaker 1: start to finish all last season.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And I get it.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We have week one overreactions. But a lot of those
- 5:43Speaker 1: week one overreactions come against teams like Furman and ECU
- 5:47Speaker 1: and Bowling Green and FAU and New Mexico State.
- 5:50Speaker 2: This was Clemson. And I know they're not 2018 Clemson.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I know they're not 2016 Clemson.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Like, I get that.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But to pretend like this team isn't better than most
- 6:03Speaker 1: of the programs out there that played against other power
- 6:06Speaker 1: four competition would be remiss. New quarterback Sam Leavitt, a
- 6:12Speaker 1: guy that had a lot of questions in the offseason
- 6:16Speaker 1: about health, sure looked pretty dang healthy to me. He
- 6:19Speaker 1: went for over 100 yards and two touchdowns on the
- 6:22Speaker 1: ground by himself on top of what he did throwing
- 6:25Speaker 1: the ball. A backup named Landon Clark came in and
- 6:29Speaker 1: threw a scoring pass. A transfer wide out, Winston Watkins Jr.,
- 6:33Speaker 1: who followed Kiffin from Ole Miss, hauled in a 32-yard
- 6:36Speaker 1: touchdown that put the game away. for the fifth time.
- 6:40Speaker 1: The offense started clicking in week one. But here's the
- 6:44Speaker 1: stat that should actually keep opposing coordinators and coaches up
- 6:48Speaker 1: at night. LSU's defense held Clemson without a touchdown until
- 6:52Speaker 1: less than seven minutes remained in the fourth quarter. An
- 6:55Speaker 1: entire ACC offense with some of the best wide receivers
- 6:59Speaker 1: in the country held under 100 yards of total production
- 7:03Speaker 1: for nearly the entire night.
- 7:06Speaker 2: All of the night that mattered.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Four sacks, a defensive touchdown, Jordan Ross housing a pick
- 7:12Speaker 1: for 30 yards to put an exclamation point on the
- 7:14Speaker 1: whole thing. And here's the part that makes it even
- 7:17Speaker 1: more impressive than it looks on the surface. Defensive coordinator
- 7:20Speaker 1: Blake Baker is not new. He's entering his third season
- 7:25Speaker 1: running LSU's defense. He's the same coordinator who had Tulane
- 7:28Speaker 1: in Memphis trying to hire him away as a head
- 7:31Speaker 1: coach this last December and who Kiffin fought to keep
- 7:34Speaker 1: instead of blowing the whole staff up. That's not Kiffin
- 7:38Speaker 1: getting lucky with a new hire. That's Kiffin being smart
- 7:41Speaker 1: enough to recognize what was already working and build around
- 7:44Speaker 1: it instead of.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Tearing it down.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Now on Baker, he's also breaking in a ton of
- 7:51Speaker 1: new faces on that side of the ball. It's a
- 7:53Speaker 1: defense that's still figuring out how it fits together, and
- 7:56Speaker 1: it still looks like this. Kiffin himself said after the
- 8:01Speaker 1: game that this defense has a chance to be genuinely special.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Now stop and think about what that actually means. This
- 8:08Speaker 1: wasn't a fully returning unit mixed with one or two transfers.
- 8:14Speaker 1: They weren't running on autopilot. This was a mix of
- 8:18Speaker 1: continuity at the top and inexperience at the bottom, and
- 8:21Speaker 1: it played like it had been together for years. The
- 8:24Speaker 1: offense hasn't even had time to think about gelling together
- 8:27Speaker 1: yet either.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Think about that. This performance in Week 1.
- 8:31Speaker 1: 644 yards, a running game reborn overnight, a defense that
- 8:36Speaker 1: looked ready for November, happened before the roster has even
- 8:39Speaker 1: completely found itself, before the timing is even fully in sync,
- 8:45Speaker 1: before Kiffin's even had a full season to build the
- 8:48Speaker 1: machine the way.
- 8:49Speaker 2: That he built it back in Oxford.
- 8:51Speaker 1: If this is what LSU looks like unfinished, just ask yourself,
- 8:55Speaker 1: what do they look like in October? Before we go on,
- 8:59Speaker 1: I will just quickly tell you we would love if
- 9:02Speaker 1: you did us a favor and subscribed to the channel.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Whether you're an LSU fan, an LSU hater, a Lane
- 9:08Speaker 1: Kiffin lover, a Lane Kiffin can't stand up, whatever, we'd
- 9:11Speaker 1: love if you subscribed. If you've made it this far
- 9:13Speaker 1: into the video, I assume I've got your attention today.
- 9:16Speaker 1: We'd love if you subscribed to the audio podcast as well.
- 9:18Speaker 1: You can find that anywhere you find podcasts, College Football Addiction.
- 9:22Speaker 1: If you're looking for your specific team, it's either on
- 9:24Speaker 1: SEC Football Addiction, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Football Addiction.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Go check those out. Link is in the description. Now,
- 9:32Speaker 1: go back to everything swirling around this program the week
- 9:36Speaker 1: of the game. The lawsuits, the SEC, the injunction, Clemson's
- 9:41Speaker 1: letter about the game contract, national reporter standing outside of
- 9:46Speaker 1: a Baton Rouge courthouse instead of on a practice field,
- 9:50Speaker 1: any other program, and that's a full-on week of distractions.
- 9:53Speaker 1: That's a locker room with one eye on the legal
- 9:56Speaker 1: news and one eye on the game plan.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And you guys knew.
- 9:59Speaker 1: What the narrative was going to be if Clemson won
- 10:02Speaker 1: this game.
- 10:04Speaker 2: It never got close to that, but you knew what
- 10:05Speaker 2: it was going to be. Oh, there goes Lane.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Can't keep his team focused because of all the crap
- 10:10Speaker 1: that's going on on the sidelines. Can't keep his team
- 10:13Speaker 1: focused because of the NFL players. You knew that narrative
- 10:15Speaker 1: was coming. And I try to tell you, I didn't
- 10:17Speaker 1: buy that narrative. I thought they would be able to
- 10:20Speaker 1: separate it and the better team would just win.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Well, guess what?
- 10:23Speaker 1: Both those things happened. The better team won, they won
- 10:25Speaker 1: by a lot, and they were able to separate it.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Kiffin's response to all of it post-game was almost dismissive.
- 10:33Speaker 1: He made clear that if LSU had won ugly instead
- 10:35Speaker 1: of blowing the doors off of Clemson, the entire story
- 10:38Speaker 1: of the week wouldn't have been about him screwing up
- 10:41Speaker 1: his own team with the roster drama.
- 10:44Speaker 2: He wasn't worried about it. And when a reporter pushed.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Him after the game about the halftime jab, asking if
- 10:50Speaker 1: it was a joke, asking what happens next with the
- 10:52Speaker 1: players still sitting in legal limbo, Kiffin didn't dodge it.
- 10:56Speaker 1: He just shrugged through it. He said, everybody hates you.
- 10:59Speaker 1: He said, they can't hate you anymore. And he's not wrong.
- 11:04Speaker 1: That's the whole philosophy in one sentence. He's not trying
- 11:08Speaker 1: to win a press conference. He's not trying to win Twitter.
- 11:12Speaker 1: He's trying to win in October, November.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And January.
- 11:17Speaker 1: And he's already told you he doesn't care what anyone
- 11:19Speaker 1: thinks about the path that he takes to get there.
- 11:21Speaker 2: That's not new either.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Remember, his final season at Ole Miss, he was fielding
- 11:26Speaker 1: questions about the LSU job in the middle of his
- 11:29Speaker 1: team's run toward the playoff. He said publicly he thinks
- 11:32Speaker 1: the entire idea that a bit of off-field noise sinks
- 11:36Speaker 1: a team's focus is very overrated. Not that it doesn't exist,
- 11:40Speaker 1: that people overrate how much it actually matters. if the
- 11:45Speaker 1: culture is built right. Here's the uncomfortable truth for every
- 11:49Speaker 1: other team in this league. The narrative around Kiffin has
- 11:53Speaker 1: always been the same. People focus on the sideshow because,
- 11:57Speaker 1: let's be honest, the sideshow is entertaining.
- 11:59Speaker 2: It's easy to write about the dog with the Twitter account.
- 12:03Speaker 1: It's easy to clip the halftime one-liner and put it
- 12:06Speaker 1: into a highlight reel. It's a lot harder to sit
- 12:09Speaker 1: with the fact that this same guy just took over
- 12:11Speaker 1: a program with insane talent insane resources, a fan base
- 12:17Speaker 1: that is off the charts good and supportive if you're winning,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and that that guy put it all together in game
- 12:25Speaker 1: one with a roster that's maybe not even finished assembling itself.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He put up the kind of performance that most coaches
- 12:31Speaker 1: spend three years building towards. Ole Miss was what may
- 12:37Speaker 1: have been just the appetizer in the Lane Kiffin run.
- 12:40Speaker 1: It was a talented, well-run program that Kiffin turned into
- 12:44Speaker 1: a national title contender using players that other schools passed
- 12:48Speaker 1: on in a system he built from nothing. LSU is
- 12:51Speaker 1: not that. LSU is five-star recruiting classes. LSU is generational facilities.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It's a fan base that fills 100,000 seats every single week.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And it's a roster that is already loaded with talent.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And that was before Kiffin even got his hands on it.
- 13:10Speaker 1: now put his and Weiss's offensive mind, his eyes for
- 13:14Speaker 1: which pieces on a staff to keep and which to rebuild,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and his complete indifference to outside noise on top of
- 13:22Speaker 1: all of the foundation that I mentioned for the Tigers.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I don't think that's a fun storyline anymore. That's not
- 13:29Speaker 1: a guy to laugh at. I think that's a problem
- 13:31Speaker 1: for everyone else. So here's what I want you to
- 13:35Speaker 1: sit with. Everybody's going to keep making the jokes. Kiffin's
- 13:39Speaker 1: going to keep making them easy to make. The dog,
- 13:41Speaker 1: the trolling, the one-liners at the worst possible moment for
- 13:44Speaker 1: his critics. None of that's going away. And honestly, he'd
- 13:49Speaker 1: probably tell you he hopes it doesn't. But somewhere underneath
- 13:53Speaker 1: all of that noise is a coach with a 740
- 13:56Speaker 1: winning percentage in the SEC who took Ole Miss to multi-year,
- 14:02Speaker 1: double-digit win seasons that it almost had never seen before.
- 14:07Speaker 1: He's a coach who was one late touchdown away from
- 14:10Speaker 1: his team playing for a national championship last January. And
- 14:15Speaker 1: that coach just took over the most talented roster of
- 14:18Speaker 1: his career. And in his very first game, with several
- 14:21Speaker 1: guys probably still learning the playbook and a bunch of
- 14:24Speaker 1: new starters all over the place, he put up 644
- 14:27Speaker 1: yards and had a unit on the other side of
- 14:29Speaker 1: the ball that looked like they're ready for November in
- 14:32Speaker 1: the month of September. If you thought Lane Kiffin came
- 14:34Speaker 1: to Baton Rouge to joke around and do hot yoga
- 14:37Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge, then you don't know him. He's going
- 14:41Speaker 1: to joke. He's going to troll. He's going to make
- 14:43Speaker 1: you furious all throughout the week. And then on Saturday night,
- 14:47Speaker 1: he's going to walk into a press conference and tell
- 14:49Speaker 1: you he doesn't care.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But he's also going to win.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And based on what happened in the Baton Rouge version
- 14:56Speaker 1: of Death Valley, he's going to win a lot. The
- 14:59Speaker 1: rest of the SEC laughed at Lane off the field.
- 15:03Speaker 1: They've laughed at the one-liners. while other programs had to
- 15:07Speaker 1: deal with Kiffin's teams. I think it might be time
- 15:10Speaker 1: to stop laughing because he's not walking into this conference
- 15:14Speaker 1: to be everybody's punchline.
- 15:16Speaker 2: He's walking into the SEC to run it.
- 15:20Speaker 1: We appreciate you guys for tuning in today. We appreciate
- 15:22Speaker 1: our friends over at PrizePix. I'd love to hear your
- 15:24Speaker 1: thoughts on Lane Kiffin in this situation because I think
- 15:28Speaker 1: the SEC is in a lot of trouble if this
- 15:30Speaker 1: is just game one of the Lane Kiffin tenure. All

- 15:47Speaker 1: college football is about to find out. We'll see you
- 15:49Speaker 1: guys next time on College Football Addiction.
