• Exodus 28:17 — אדם (odem): chose “ruby”. Alternatives: “carnelian”, “sardius”. Why: the identifications of the breastpiece stones are uncertain; the traditional names are kept where the list is parallel.
• Exodus 28:30 — האורים והתמים (ha-Urim ve-ha-Tummim): chose “the Urim and the Thummim”. Alternatives: “Lights and Perfections” (translating the names). Why: what the objects were is unknown, so their names are kept untranslated.
