- 0:05Are we heading for World War 3? Welcome to Mark and Pete.
- 0:09As tensions rise in the Middle East, it's looking like, well,
- 0:13is it possible that we might actually be heading for World
- 0:16War three this time? This is Mark and Pete 2 blokes
- 0:20with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:25When you're numbers up once there was World War One but
- 0:30sadly all the folk have gone. Then came along World War 2 and
- 0:35now there are very few yet if there was World War Three it
- 0:41would affect you and me. Then all the people would be no
- 0:44more. So there'd be no need for World
- 0:47War four. Yes, well, it does seem that
- 0:50some people are whipping up the frenzy of World War 3.
- 0:54Is it in the hands of Donald Trump?
- 0:56Now? He has said that Iran wants to
- 0:58make a deal rather than face U.S. military action.
- 1:02Now, as we've seen history learn from it, as we've seen from
- 1:07World War One, with the triggering of the, you know, the
- 1:10shooting of King Archduke Ferdinand and then suddenly many
- 1:14other countries started to get involved.
- 1:17Have you seen a similar pattern, Mr. Pete?
- 1:19I ask you, are we going through this domino effect once again?
- 1:23Are we going into World War 3? Now, can I, Mr. Mark, say the
- 1:28outset? I hope not, because although
- 1:31people have pointed out that it makes great content for shows
- 1:34like ours. But at what cost, Mark?
- 1:37What cost? But no, I, I, I, but I, I think
- 1:40and I just looking at the strategy that it appears that
- 1:45Donald Trump and his team are pursuing that, that that isn't
- 1:50what's happening. That's what isn't what's going
- 1:53to happen in that they they haven't rushed in.
- 1:57They have instead, despite provocation from Iran, despite
- 2:02them threatening to assassinate Donald Trump and to attack,
- 2:06despite all all the rhetoric, despite actually going ahead and
- 2:10killing lots of the protesters, despite I use the word despite
- 2:14again, but despite what Donald Trump had said about that they
- 2:17shouldn't do that. Although there would be
- 2:20reprisals from the US. They appear to be playing it
- 2:25cautiously in that they're getting on their side.
- 2:29Other interested nations in the region, specifically Saudi
- 2:33Arabia, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia is signalling on
- 2:37social media. That is sort of paraphrasing
- 2:41what he said in social media. He has been talking with United
- 2:47United States of America think tanks and advisers about the
- 2:51strategy for peace in the Middle East.
- 2:55Now, this was a change when he was totally against any any US
- 2:58involvement earlier. So that's looking like along
- 3:02with the announcement that there's going to be a sale of
- 3:05certain military items, I think it's $7 billion worth was
- 3:11announced from recently over the past few days, it just seemed
- 3:17that the Saudi Arabia is on board.
- 3:19All we need is the UAE to be on board.
- 3:22Hopefully they are. And you've got a position where
- 3:25if you attack Iran, they won't really be able to respond if you
- 3:29you being the United States, which puts you in a position to
- 3:33make them negotiate. So that's that's my reading on
- 3:36it. What do you think, Mr. Mark?
- 3:38Well, I think what's interesting is listening to the rhetoric of
- 3:41Donald Trump because he's a key component here.
- 3:43He's already warned Tehran that they are running out of time to
- 3:47negotiate what is called a a nuclear program deal.
- 3:51And there are concerns of Iran having nuclear weapons.
- 3:55Now, of course, no surprise. Iran has denied that there's
- 3:59anything sinister, but here's the point.
- 4:02What we're starting to see is this domino dynamic effect,
- 4:05which is Iran are in conversations, of course, with
- 4:09Russia. And that means bringing in the
- 4:12other equation of, yes, Mr. Vladimir Putin.
- 4:15Now, of course, we know that we're not party to all of those
- 4:19conversations. But, you know, if Mr. Putin
- 4:21wants to come along to the mark of the show, it would be great.
- 4:24But the fact is we know that there is.
- 4:28The game has changed. We talked about it at the
- 4:29beginning, World War One, well, the players were very different.
- 4:33World War Two, guess what? The players were different.
- 4:35The different power dynamics have shifted when you look at
- 4:38where we are today. I think it's reasonable to say,
- 4:41Mr. Pete, that some of those big influencers, whether it be the
- 4:44United Kingdom, Canada and others, that Commonwealth
- 4:48footprint that we once had is no longer in the equation to make a
- 4:51difference. And I think one of the concerns
- 4:54is what is going on in the head of Vladimir Putin and
- 4:58ironically, Donald Trump, because we're seeing things
- 5:02playing out like this, this horrible little chess game
- 5:05that's going on. Is it is it really genuinely
- 5:08about the concerns over nuclear weapons?
- 5:11Or maybe is it something else? We've seen that Donald Trump has
- 5:14already raised points about wanting to own, you know,
- 5:17Greenland and any other type of things.
- 5:20Is is there something else behind?
- 5:22Well, it's about my reading on it.
- 5:24Is this in terms of the, the current rhetoric, I think it was
- 5:30a concern about developing nuclear weapons previously.
- 5:34I think that's been dealt, dealt with for some time by the
- 5:37bombing attack that they, that the United States performed
- 5:40along with Israel. And I think that the, but I
- 5:46think that the point now is if, if Donald Trump politically, if
- 5:51he makes it about the nuclear weapons rather than the
- 5:55uprising, supporting the uprising, he's in a good
- 5:58position politically at home in that he's not trying to
- 6:02intervene, intervene in another country.
- 6:04So that maybe bring the MAGA base along with him and also not
- 6:09have to declare war, which of course requires Congress,
- 6:13Congress, which he may not get. So this in other words, it's
- 6:17just a, it's a military action on a, an, a security issue.
- 6:23So he, he could justify it in that way.
- 6:26But I, I think in terms of it not causing a conflagration and
- 6:31spreading into World War three, this is also a good move because
- 6:35it seems like it's, the aim is to bring tensions down.
- 6:38We want to remove these, these weapons of mass destruction, to
- 6:42use an unfortunate term being on the table.
- 6:45And then we stop. If there is, if there is a
- 6:49regime change, that's down to the people within Iran.
- 6:53Of course, the hope is that it does precipitate it and allow it
- 6:56to happen. Well, but I, I think it's, I
- 6:59think you see that although it could all blow up, it could
- 7:04literally hands. It just seemed that the that the
- 7:09Department of War, the Secretary of State and Trump himself are
- 7:12trying to play this in a way that is least likely to result
- 7:16in that as far as Putin is concerned, it doesn't seem to me
- 7:20that he wants to get involved. Trump has signalled time and
- 7:25time again that he's into the keeping the hemispheres
- 7:27separate. What used to be called the
- 7:30Monroe Doctrine. People are trying starting to
- 7:33call it the Donro Doctrine because of Trump in in that
- 7:36America is responsible for things in in its sphere of
- 7:40influence and Russia in its half of the world and they don't
- 7:45interfere with each other. Now the other plan, this is of
- 7:48course China. But this is my personal view.
- 7:51I guess I could be proven wrong. I don't think they have the
- 7:54reach and power that they claim. They've a lot of financial
- 7:57clout, buying up countries like Mauritius, that's another story.
- 8:02And supply providing supplies for Iran, which they did
- 8:06recently. They sent ships over to provide
- 8:09supplies. But I don't think they have the
- 8:12military power anywhere near what America has.
- 8:15I don't think that they're a big player here.
- 8:17Well, one of the other things that has been sighted around
- 8:21this sort of tensions in the Middle East is yes, about
- 8:25nuclear, but also about stop killing protesters.
- 8:29So one of the things that human based or human rights based
- 8:33agencies and charity based organisations have highlighted
- 8:37that many people, hundreds if not thousands of people have
- 8:40been killed simply because they've been protesting.
- 8:43Now Donald Trump has brought this to attention and he's made
- 8:46that clear that that's one of the other reasons why he
- 8:49believes that this is another reason for action.
- 8:53So that's quite a different basis in itself.
- 8:57I mean, on the one hand, there's territorial advantage, there's
- 9:00economic and political power pushing and pulling.
- 9:03But on the human rights side, it's interesting that Donald
- 9:06Trump has brought this up. So just before we sort of close
- 9:10out, what's your thoughts in terms of the human rights where
- 9:13people in Iran genuinely actually want regime change
- 9:16because they just want democracy, which they do not
- 9:19have? My thoughts on that is, yes, we
- 9:22want to support that, but this is the the issue, the issue that
- 9:28needs to be, you need to be careful about because think
- 9:32about what you want to support. You want to support people
- 9:34basically taking back the control of their own country.
- 9:38But if you send in troops and take over the country, they're
- 9:41no longer involved. You are the, you're an invading,
- 9:45you're an invading army, your country taking over another
- 9:47person's country. And then you, the people might
- 9:51turn against you. It gets very, very complicated
- 9:54and America has suffered from that many times in the past, in
- 9:58recent history. So they need to be very careful
- 10:00not to do that. And there's no sign that Donald
- 10:03Trump is going to send in troops to run the place.
- 10:07Even when he said he was running, running a country
- 10:10recently when they took out Maduro in Venezuela, what he
- 10:14meant was they run it in that we tell you what to do or we'll or
- 10:18we'll kill more people or take your leaders again.
- 10:21That's the it's, it's done by coercion.
- 10:24And I, I believe that is the only way.
- 10:26I can't. If you actually go in and take
- 10:28over the country, it's not going to end well because that's not,
- 10:33that's not people taking back their country.
- 10:36So, yeah, it's, it's, it's it's a difficult balancing act.
- 10:41If anyone can do it, I think Donald Trump can.
- 10:44As as regulators will know, we're big fans on this show, but
- 10:49we're big fans of everyone we talk about this thing.
- 10:50But yeah, Donald Trump on in has this particular skill of, of
- 10:54negotiating with, with his advisers, of course.
- 10:58But he has what might be called the hotspot or giant balls or
- 11:02whatever you might recall it in that he can take these tough
- 11:06decisions, but also he's prepared to wait until the right
- 11:10scenario arrives. So I, I'm not looking at it
- 11:15being World War three soon. I, I, I don't see the tensions
- 11:19rising because of Donald Trump. I see he's really one of the
- 11:23people, one of the few people who could thread the needle and
- 11:26actually get a regime change without them having to take over
- 11:31and thus make things worse as they have, as they've done in
- 11:34the past. Well, they will in fact walk
- 11:36away from it rather than do that.
- 11:38Well, interesting. Even though there are military
- 11:41movements from Donald Trump, the US, etcetera, but to your point,
- 11:44there is some diplomacy in there.
- 11:46Maybe it's not so much World War Three, maybe World War 2, 1/2.
