- 0:03Speaker 1: If you're just joining us, good morning, welcome. Show 5688
- 0:07Speaker 1: of The Morning Show with Preston Scott. It's October 1st,
- 0:10Speaker 1: which is a very big day because it's the release
- 0:14Speaker 1: of a brand new book called Just Make It. And
- 0:18Speaker 1: it's the story of the story by former PGA Tour winner,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Kenny Knox. Kenny joins us on the program this morning.
- 0:26Speaker 2: How are you? Good morning, Preston.
- 0:29Speaker 1: You know... I just thought as we were spinning up
- 0:33Speaker 1: to this segment, you and I have known each other
- 0:36Speaker 1: now nearly 40 years.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You're getting old.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I hate to tell you, but I'm not the only one. Hey,
- 0:47Speaker 1: tell me why you made the decision to write this book.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Preston, I've always wanted to write my stories about all
- 0:56Speaker 2: the golf, what I call golf's greatest generation. I was
- 1:00Speaker 2: fortunate enough to have Jack Nicklaus as a friend and
- 1:05Speaker 2: he was kind enough to allow me to play many,
- 1:08Speaker 2: many practice rounds with him over the years and major
- 1:11Speaker 2: championships to tutor me and to mentor me. And so
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's not just about Jack Nicklaus, it's about so many
- 1:20Speaker 2: different great players that we watched growing up, Preston, that
- 1:23Speaker 2: you and I shared the enthusiasm watching them win golf
- 1:26Speaker 2: tournaments and So I did that, and then it was
- 1:30Speaker 2: also a combination of my spiritual life, my journey in life,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and also my marriage of 42 years with Karen and
- 1:41Speaker 2: the life that we've led and the mountaintop experience that
- 1:45Speaker 2: we're having right now.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You take readers through it all. How did you kind
- 1:54Speaker 1: of decide what to share and what to keep private?
- 2:00Speaker 2: Well, the bottom line is my commitment level to First
- 2:04Speaker 2: the Lord this year has been overwhelming, and I just
- 2:09Speaker 2: felt like I've been serving myself my entire life, and
- 2:12Speaker 2: it was time to start serving others and try to
- 2:16Speaker 2: help those in need. And it was just time to
- 2:19Speaker 2: just lay it all out there. We all make mistakes,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and we all fortunately have someone to go to that
- 2:28Speaker 2: can forgive those mistakes. My opportunity to share that is
- 2:35Speaker 2: the platform that I was given when I was blessed
- 2:38Speaker 2: enough to win a few tournaments on tour and get
- 2:41Speaker 2: the attention of a few people here and there. So
- 2:44Speaker 2: it's just my opportunity to leave a legacy that may
- 2:47Speaker 2: help those in need.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Joining us on the program is Kenny Knox. The book
- 2:51Speaker 1: is just make it. It is released available as of today.
- 2:55Speaker 1: You can get it on amazon.com. I told you, I
- 2:58Speaker 1: texted you, Kenny. I said, I've already got my hardcover coming. Uh,
- 3:02Speaker 1: it comes in a, in a paperback hardcover or Kindle. Um, you,
- 3:07Speaker 1: your title, just make it, give us the elevator pitch
- 3:11Speaker 1: on where that come from.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, this will be a quick story, but it's a
- 3:14Speaker 2: long one, but, uh, Basically, I was leading the tournament
- 3:18Speaker 2: at the Honda Classic. I lost the lead after the
- 3:21Speaker 2: horrible weather on Saturday, shooting an 80 with the average
- 3:25Speaker 2: score that day being 79.2. And I went out in
- 3:29Speaker 2: fourth place on Sunday, went to the first tee, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: was encouraged by T.T. Rodriguez and Hubert Green to go
- 3:35Speaker 2: out there and try to win the golf tournament. So
- 3:38Speaker 2: I went from becoming the hunted to the hunter and
- 3:41Speaker 2: got off to a fast start, burning three, four, and five,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and then come into the pivotal ball hole number seven
- 3:48Speaker 2: where I flew the green, buried my ball in the bunker,
- 3:51Speaker 2: a green that was surrounded by water, and I got
- 3:54Speaker 2: in and tried to hit an impossible shot, and I
- 3:57Speaker 2: failed and went across the green in the water. I
- 3:59Speaker 2: had to replay the shot from the same position, and
- 4:04Speaker 2: my brain was in fast forward and didn't know what
- 4:07Speaker 2: to do, how to do it. I just knew that
- 4:08Speaker 2: I had blown the tournament at that point and tried
- 4:11Speaker 2: to retain my composure. And as I waggled my golf club,
- 4:15Speaker 2: I heard the voice come in my head, just make it.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And I heard it not just once, but three times.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And I drew the club back, splashed the ball out
- 4:24Speaker 2: on the green, checking up and rolling down the hill
- 4:27Speaker 2: and falling in the front of a cup.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Anybody who's ever played a game of golf right now is,
- 4:36Speaker 1: is doing what I'm doing because we know that feeling
- 4:39Speaker 1: only not in the pressure that you were feeling it, Kenny. Um,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and so he, you just make it and you just did, uh,
- 4:47Speaker 1: more to come with Kenny Knox. And again, the book,
- 4:49Speaker 1: just make it our guest here on the morning show
- 4:51Speaker 1: with Preston Scott. Kenny, I'm looking at the cover. This
- 4:58Speaker 1: is an old school kind of design cover. Slightly flared
- 5:02Speaker 1: red pants, the sweater, the shirt wide open with the
- 5:05Speaker 1: big collar. Man, that is old school there, pal.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Hey, that was my Mark Scott clothing attire there. Polyester pants,
- 5:16Speaker 2: spandex waist. And, you know, the thermal underwear that we
- 5:21Speaker 2: had back in those days was like wearing armor. You know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: it was unbelievable. But those were the good old days anyway, right, Preston?
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, indeed. Your book is different for a lot of reasons. Obviously,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you're sharing your story, the story that you and Karen share,
- 5:41Speaker 1: as well as what you share with other professional players.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You got a lot of contributions at the beginning of
- 5:47Speaker 1: your book from a lot of players. Share a little
- 5:49Speaker 1: bit about what went into getting some of those guys
- 5:52Speaker 1: to pen a note or two.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Well, again, what an honor it is to even... know
- 5:58Speaker 2: those guys, but I decided I was going to shoot
- 6:01Speaker 2: for the moon, so I called Jack up, and he
- 6:04Speaker 2: didn't answer the phone initially. I said, oh, well, and
- 6:07Speaker 2: then as I was leaving the voice message, he answered it.
- 6:10Speaker 2: He said, well, I better answer it to 850 number,
- 6:12Speaker 2: so I said, hey, Jack, it's Kenny, and we started talking.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I had him laughing for about 30 minutes, and we
- 6:19Speaker 2: had a great conversation, and I finally got the courage
- 6:22Speaker 2: up to ask him to do the forward, and he
- 6:25Speaker 2: graciously agreed, and So I said, okay, I'm going to
- 6:28Speaker 2: go ahead and keep shooting the moon. So I got
- 6:30Speaker 2: in touch with Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Lee Trevino, and others.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I've got some very good friends that have done contributions.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So unfortunately, Lee Trevino was not able to do it,
- 6:45Speaker 2: but Gary and Ben did, and they were very gracious
- 6:48Speaker 2: in doing that.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Your book also features something that is remarkably new in
- 6:55Speaker 1: how you're integrating QR codes. And so as people that
- 7:00Speaker 1: read the story, and obviously you're going to have golf
- 7:02Speaker 1: fans buying this, they're going to get some bonus content
- 7:06Speaker 1: if they like. Tell us about that.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, this was all the Lord. I'm
- 7:12Speaker 2: not that smart. But I decided that I could write songs.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I started writing songs when I wrote Karen a Valentine poem.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We turned it into a song, and it really turned
- 7:24Speaker 2: out nice. And so I realized I could do Pebble
- 7:28Speaker 2: Beach when I played with Jack Nicklaus the first time.
- 7:30Speaker 2: He walked up on a tee with Tom Weisskopf and
- 7:33Speaker 2: looked at the tee sheet and says, at the U.S.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Open in 1982 at Pebble Beach, he said, can I
- 7:38Speaker 2: join you? So I wrote a story about that experience,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and then I said, so I wrote my first song
- 7:46Speaker 2: in the book about playing with Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weisskopf,
- 7:50Speaker 2: and it turned out good. And so I wrote another
- 7:52Speaker 2: 116 songs to go with all the subchapters. So you
- 7:59Speaker 2: can read the subchapters and QR code and listen to
- 8:04Speaker 2: the songs, and I guarantee you they will not bore you.
- 8:07Speaker 2: You will be laughing. You will be laughing. You will
- 8:10Speaker 2: be experiencing music like you've never heard before, and you'll
- 8:13Speaker 2: be dancing and crazy. And it's such a cool concept.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'm glad that I came up with it. And I
- 8:21Speaker 2: haven't found anybody else who's done it. So at the
- 8:23Speaker 2: end of the book, Preston, I did QR codes for
- 8:26Speaker 2: my golf lessons. I hired a videographer to come in
- 8:29Speaker 2: to TPC Sawgrass, and we shot many videos together. And
- 8:35Speaker 2: so you can read my golf lessons and then hit
- 8:38Speaker 2: the QR code and I'm right there teaching you with
- 8:41Speaker 2: a video of what I just taught you in text.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So with the purchase of a book, you're not only
- 8:47Speaker 1: getting a memoir of your life on the PGA Tour
- 8:50Speaker 1: and some of your interactions and stories along the way,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you're sharing insights of some of the greatest names in
- 8:58Speaker 1: golf history. You're sharing your story of faith and the
- 9:03Speaker 1: ups and the downs of walking that walk. And you're
- 9:06Speaker 1: also giving some music and golf instruction too.
- 9:11Speaker 2: That's exactly right. And it's a one-of-a-kind book. I don't
- 9:15Speaker 2: think anybody's ever done it. I'm really hoping this. I
- 9:18Speaker 2: need everybody to buy a book today because if we
- 9:20Speaker 2: get on Amazon, we're going to go first bestsellers list,
- 9:25Speaker 2: and then this is going to go national, international, and
- 9:28Speaker 2: and we're going to bring some notoriety to Tallahassee.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Most importantly, though, you're going to bring some notoriety to
- 9:36Speaker 1: our Lord and Savior, Jesus, because really yours and Karen's
- 9:40Speaker 1: story is the story of the redemptive faith and work
- 9:44Speaker 1: of God.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Well, the golf was the hook. I'll be honest with you.
- 9:49Speaker 2: The golf was the hook. Everybody wants to read about
- 9:51Speaker 2: all the great golfers, but this is a real story
- 9:54Speaker 2: about our life together, 42 years, and how I met
- 9:57Speaker 2: Karen and how we went through our ups and downs
- 9:59Speaker 2: and the struggles that we had later in our marriage
- 10:03Speaker 2: and then the recovery and the reconciliation for the last
- 10:07Speaker 2: 14 years has just been something unbelievable and it can
- 10:11Speaker 2: only be done by God and God's in control of
- 10:14Speaker 2: all this and all we have to do is submit
- 10:16Speaker 2: ourselves and allow him to work through us through our
- 10:18Speaker 2: obedience Kenny.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Thanks for your friendship. I appreciate you and Karen. You
- 10:22Speaker 1: know that. And thanks for making time for us this morning.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Thanks for all that you do, Preston. You're the best.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I appreciate it, my friend. Kenny Knox with us. The
- 10:31Speaker 1: book is Just Make It. You can order it right now.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And I'm kind of like, well, let's order books today because,
- 10:38Speaker 1: like you said, if books get sold in large numbers
- 10:42Speaker 1: on the first day, you get popped up on Amazon's
- 10:45Speaker 1: seller list, and it can make a difference. And so
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's available in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle. I've ordered mine.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Order yours. Just Make It. The author, Kenny Knox, our
- 10:56Speaker 1: guest here on The Morning Show with Preston Scott.
