- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37In life, sometimes you have decisions you're going to make
- 0:40about some type of plan you might have.
- 0:44It's always good to run your plans past the Lord and ask Him
- 0:49what he thinks you should do. Wait on the Lord and pray and
- 0:54ask him what you should do. A lot of times we don't think
- 0:59that way. We just respond out of our
- 1:01emotion or our mood or human reasoning, and we just do what
- 1:05we think we're going to do. Most of us have been part of a
- 1:09team at some point. Whether it was at work on a
- 1:11sports team or as a member of a music group, we work together
- 1:15for the good of the whole. Sometimes we took constructive
- 1:19criticism or had to listen to other people's opinions.
- 1:22Today, Pastor Clark reminds you that this is especially helpful
- 1:26to remember in your relationship with Jesus.
- 1:29Consult him on everything. He's a perfect leader and
- 1:33teammate. Why would you want to make
- 1:35decisions apart from him now? Here's Pastor Clark in Acts
- 1:39Chapter 27 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:45Paul is going to Rome. He's wanted to go to Rome pretty
- 1:49much his whole ministry life, and it just seemed like there
- 1:52was always things in the way that prevented him from getting
- 1:54there. And so now he's going to have to
- 1:56take a long voyage and a couple ships and have his life risked
- 2:00and we're going to read about that.
- 2:01Now. The one thing to I think to
- 2:04consider this voyage ends up in shipwreck.
- 2:08In shipwreck, I've never been. I've been at sea and I've been
- 2:12in boats and that kind of stuff, but I've never been shipwrecked.
- 2:15It's a very terrifying thing to experience if the boat is
- 2:19starting to take on water and it starts to go down and you might
- 2:21die, right? But I've been shipwrecked in my
- 2:24life personally, through circumstances of my own doing
- 2:28and sin and ruining my life when I was a younger man doing things
- 2:32that cause consequences to happen in my life.
- 2:36And then I've also been in situations, even as a Christian,
- 2:40where God has allowed me to go through tough times and
- 2:43challenging times and life threatening times and tragic
- 2:46times that teach me how to depend more on Him and how to
- 2:50surrender to him and how to yield to Him and how to get out
- 2:54of the way so that he can have His way.
- 2:56So if you're here today, you might be in a a place of feeling
- 3:00like there's no hope. Or maybe you're sensing that
- 3:04there is hope, but you're wondering when that hope might
- 3:06appear for you. You're feeling like your life's
- 3:09wrecked. Or maybe you've made decisions.
- 3:12Maybe there's relationships that are unreconcilable.
- 3:15Maybe there's health issues you're dealing with that are
- 3:17just very, very challenging. Maybe there's issues with
- 3:21children or fractured friendships that you wish
- 3:24weren't fractured. There could be all kind of stuff
- 3:27that you personally are dealing with today.
- 3:30And I'm here to tell you as we study this chapter, that you're
- 3:33not alone, that everyone who lives life goes through times of
- 3:37challenge and adversity and difficulty.
- 3:40It's not uncommon. It's normal.
- 3:42And the apostle Paul, who walked totally with the Lord, was
- 3:46totally committed to the Lord, also went through these things.
- 3:50Just because you're a Christian doesn't mean you escape
- 3:52adversity or challenges or difficulty when you're a
- 3:55Christian. God uses these things, and he
- 3:58even allows warfare and the enemy at times to attack us in
- 4:02order that we might draw closer to the Lord.
- 4:04And sometimes when you're going through something, you want to
- 4:07say, well, God, if you really care about me, if you really
- 4:09love me, why are you putting me through this?
- 4:12But God always has a reason in time to get us through whatever
- 4:16it is we're getting through to begin to understand one thing
- 4:19for sure. I can't live life without the
- 4:22help of the Lord and neither can you.
- 4:25Lord speak to us today about how we can make application and
- 4:29parallel what Paul went through in our own personal life today.
- 4:33And perhaps what it is that we're facing, what it is we're
- 4:36dealing with, the tragedies we've been through, the things
- 4:39we're trying to overcome. God show us how Paul depended
- 4:44upon you and we ask all these things in Jesus name, Amen.
- 4:49First one. And when it was decided that
- 4:51they we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and some
- 4:55other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the
- 4:59Augustan Regiment. So this Julius is a very
- 5:03powerful leader. He's going to watch over the
- 5:05prisoners, especially Paul and those who had gone with him in
- 5:10order to make sure that they make the journey and get the
- 5:12room. So entering a ship of the Adrum
- 5:16ATM, we put the sea meaning to sail along the coast of Asia.
- 5:21So if you look at a map, they're coming out of the Bible lands
- 5:25and they're coming up the coast up toward Greece to come around.
- 5:29And this group of people that went with Paul that mentions a
- 5:33couple names here. First of all, Luke is giving the
- 5:36declaration here. What happened in this chapter?
- 5:39And so he was with Paul and then Aristocas, a Macedonian of
- 5:43Thessalonica, was with us. This is another brother in the
- 5:47Lord. It also had travelled with Paul
- 5:50and Paul was allowed to have some help.
- 5:53Luke was his physician, so he was there to minister to Paul's
- 5:56health issues. And Aristarchus was a brother
- 6:01who was also allowed to come on. The ship basically took the
- 6:05place of a slave, but also prisoner that he might be with
- 6:08Paul. And so they're heading up the
- 6:11coast of Macedonian of Thessalonica was with us.
- 6:14And the next day we landed at Sidon.
- 6:17And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to
- 6:21his friends and receive care. So Paul had a lot of freedom
- 6:25because of his testimony. He wasn't a prisoner because of
- 6:28doing something like a crime of murder.
- 6:31Like most of the prisoners on this boat, we're going to be
- 6:33delivered to Rome to be killed basically for their crimes.
- 6:37Paul was a political prisoner and so Julius gave him some
- 6:42freedom. So Paul stopped here at Sidon,
- 6:44doesn't tell us who we saw, but he was with different people,
- 6:47friends that knew him and they ministered to him.
- 6:50And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to
- 6:54his friends and receive care. And when he put the sea from
- 6:57there, we sailed under the shelter of Cyprus.
- 7:01Now Cypress is going up there near the coast of Greece,
- 7:06beautiful place in the world because the winds were contrary.
- 7:10And when we had sailed over the sea, which is off Cilicia and
- 7:14Pamphylia, we came to Mara, city of Lycia.
- 7:17Now, if you took the time and looked on the Bible map, you
- 7:20just see how they're gradually moving through these waters to
- 7:23head up to Rome. They are the centurion found an
- 7:26Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy and he put us on board.
- 7:31And so now there's this opportunity to get going faster.
- 7:35It's a bigger ship, about 146 feet long, about 36 feet wide
- 7:40that covered, carried grain from Egypt and Egypt brought food to
- 7:45Rome. So they were always given
- 7:47preference on the seas and access to the harbors in Italy.
- 7:52And so all this stuff is on water, what they're doing
- 7:55dealing with here. And it says when we had sailed
- 7:58slowly many days, we arrived with difficulty off sign us, the
- 8:03wind not pretty permitting us to proceed.
- 8:06We sailed under the shelter of Creek off Saloma, passing it
- 8:10with difficulty. We came to place called Fair
- 8:13Haven near the city of Lacia. So they're going up the coast
- 8:17past Lebanon. Now they're off the coast of
- 8:20Greece and Crete, and they're trying to find a place that they
- 8:23can be for the storms to be able to not destroy them.
- 8:29And Fair Havens is, is is one-on-one side of Crete there.
- 8:34So now when much time had been spent and sailing was now
- 8:39dangerous because of the fast. And this fast relates to Yom
- 8:44Kippur, the Day of Atonement, October, the Jewish feast of
- 8:48fasting isn't good to be traveling in the waters past
- 8:52October and going into the winter time.
- 8:55So that was 1 issue there that gave us the insight of when this
- 8:58was occurring and Paul's giving them his opinion though his
- 9:02sense, his warning. He says in verse 10 men, I
- 9:06perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss
- 9:11not only of the cargo and ship but also our lives.
- 9:16So in life, sometimes you have decisions you're going to make
- 9:20about some type of plan you might have.
- 9:23It's always good to run your plans past the Lord and ask Him
- 9:28what He thinks you should do. Wait on the Lord and pray and
- 9:33ask Him what you should do. A lot of times we don't think
- 9:38that way. We just respond out of our
- 9:40emotion or our mood or human reasoning and we just do what we
- 9:44think we're going to do. But that's not how God's created
- 9:48us to live. And we're learning to depend on
- 9:51the Lord. We don't immediately depend on
- 9:54the Lord when we get saved. We still have a lot of self
- 9:59pride, whatever we think. We know how to handle things and
- 10:02what to do and all that kind of stuff.
- 10:05And it's interesting when you tell someone that cares about
- 10:07you as a deep Christian, what your plans are, what you're
- 10:10going to do. A wise Christian would say,
- 10:13well, have you prayed about that?
- 10:14Have you asked the Lord what he might want you to do?
- 10:17And sometimes you get a shock look from the person.
- 10:20Well, well, no, I, I didn't do that.
- 10:22Well, it's always good to ask God what his thoughts are and if
- 10:28there's any reason why you shouldn't do what it is you're
- 10:30planning to do. You want the Lord to reveal it
- 10:32to you. You want him to speak to you so
- 10:34that you would not bypass his perfect will for your life.
- 10:38Paul, knowing the Lord and walking deeply with the Lord,
- 10:42had experience in the sea. In Second Corinthians Chapter
- 10:4611, it says he was shipwrecked 3 times.
- 10:49So this guy knows what he's talking about.
- 10:51He can tell by the winds and what's happening in the
- 10:53environment and the seas that this is not a good plan to
- 10:57proceed. And so he's giving them his
- 11:00insight and he's telling them if you're going to ruin everything,
- 11:03you're going to lose your cargo and risk all of our lives.
- 11:06Verse 11 Nevertheless, the centurion was more persuaded by
- 11:10the helmsman, the captain of the ship and the owner of the ship
- 11:13than by the things spoken by Paul.
- 11:16And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the
- 11:19majority advises set sail from there.
- 11:21Also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete
- 11:26opening toward the southwest and northwest and winter there.
- 11:29So that would have been more in the direction of Italy.
- 11:32It was only about 40 miles from this point to Phoenix and they
- 11:38thought they could make it because they had already
- 11:39travelled all these miles and and made it thus far.
- 11:43This particular port, this Fair Haven was a real small community
- 11:48and the people that ran the ship, the crew, they didn't want
- 11:50to be there over winter because it was a boring place, wasn't
- 11:53much to do. They wanted to go to a more
- 11:56happening place that they'd have entertainment, do whatever crazy
- 11:59stuff they wanted to do. So that was one of the reasons
- 12:02they wanted to get out of that Fair Haven harboring and go to
- 12:05this Phoenix place winter there. So in verse 13, when the South
- 12:10wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire
- 12:15putting out the sea, they sailed close by Creek.
- 12:18So it started out good the journey, the wind was perfect,
- 12:21nice sail looked like it was going to be smooth ride.
- 12:24I'm sure the captain of the ship looked at Paul and said, you
- 12:27know, you're wrong. I'm right kind of thing, but not
- 12:30long after verse 14, a temptress head when a rose called your
- 12:35Clyde. And this is translated the
- 12:37typhoon or a severe northeasterly storm.
- 12:41If you've ever been to the shore on land and you have a vacation
- 12:45and all of a sudden the winds start coming up and it gets to
- 12:48the temperatures drop and the waves start looking really crazy
- 12:52and the lifeguards won't let you in the in the water.
- 12:54That's a discouraging time because northeasters could last
- 12:57a week and your whole vacation and all the money is spent to be
- 13:00at the beach. You know, you can't go in the
- 13:02water. You can go up maybe to your
- 13:03knees and that's it. So this is what's happening
- 13:06here. This is a very, very serious
- 13:09storm and it's scary. Someone said it's like they were
- 13:13in this really cool boat and this floating and the sun and
- 13:17the gentle breeze and all of a sudden they're like a toothpick
- 13:21in the mid midst of 40 foot swells, that this is
- 13:26unbelievable. So the ship was caught and it
- 13:30could not head into the wind. So we let her drive.
- 13:33So they didn't have the ability to steer this boat.
- 13:35Now this boat was taken by the wind and being pushed down more
- 13:39toward the coast of Africa instead of the shores of Italy.
- 13:43And they couldn't even really tell where they were going.
- 13:45And running under the shelter of an island called Claudia, we
- 13:49secured the skiff with difficulty.
- 13:51They're trying to stabilize us, this huge vessel, and when they
- 13:55had stake taken it on board, they use cables.
- 13:58So they're pulling the the lifeboat out of the water to
- 14:01skiff and getting it into the big boat because it would start
- 14:05smashing the other boat. And they undergirded the ship
- 14:08and with these cables to sort of wrap it around to prevent it
- 14:12from coming apart because of the waves less they should run
- 14:14aground on the sands. They struck sail and were so
- 14:19driven and because we were exceedingly Tempest toss the
- 14:23next day they lighten the ship. So they're starting to dump
- 14:26stuff out of the boat. The cargo, which was worth a lot
- 14:31of money, they had to begin to get rid of it because of the
- 14:34weight. They're they're lightning the
- 14:36ship. On the third day we threw the
- 14:39ship's tackle overboard with our own hands.
- 14:42So not any are they getting rid of the grain.
- 14:45But now they're getting rid of any kind of physical bedding or
- 14:49any kind of equipment. It isn't necessary right now.
- 14:52And they're getting rid of all of it.
- 14:54It says in verse 20 now when neither sun nor stars appeared
- 14:58for many days and those small Tempest beat on us all hope that
- 15:02we would be saved was finally given up.
- 15:04Have you ever been in a situation where you're going
- 15:08through something that you feel that there's no hope left and
- 15:15they're ready to give up? I'm sure you have been.
- 15:19I know I have been. There doesn't seem to be any
- 15:22answer, any reason for why it is what it is you're going through.
- 15:28And it's a really time of testing your faith and how well
- 15:35you know God because God will never fail you.
- 15:39He promises us throughout the Scriptures, Jesus never fails.
- 15:44Our faith fails. We get our eyes off of the Lord,
- 15:49We get our minds and our hearts out of the word of God, and then
- 15:53all of a sudden we have nothing to stand on, do we?
- 15:57There's no stability. Everything's uncertain.
- 16:01Everything's up in the air and they're at a point right now
- 16:07that they are basically hopeless and they're giving up.
- 16:14I don't know where you are today, but I'm here to tell you
- 16:16and encourage you. Don't give up no matter what.
- 16:20Get close to God. He's ready to do something.
- 16:25You get close to Him, He'll reveal himself to you in ways
- 16:29that you never even knew Him. I hate to say it, but we're all
- 16:35at least I'll say myself, knuckleheads.
- 16:38I'm going to say that about you. But God has to many times cause
- 16:44stuff to happen in order to get our attention, to show us like
- 16:48we're missing things. We're not seeing things the way
- 16:52he wants us to. We're maybe not living the way
- 16:54he wants us to live. He's he loves us so much that
- 16:57he's going to do everything he can sometimes.
- 16:59And he starts gradually many times to get your attention.
- 17:02And then if you don't listen, then maybe things get a little
- 17:05bit more challenging, more difficult.
- 17:08But here's Paul in this situation.
- 17:11He's a human being like the rest of them.
- 17:13I'm sure he's freaking out too, in his ways.
- 17:15A lot of people are seasick. They can't even think about
- 17:19eating anything. But Paul begins to speak verse
- 17:2421. But after long abstinence from
- 17:26food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, Men, you
- 17:31should have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete and
- 17:34incurred this disaster and loss. Has then anybody ever told you
- 17:39after you made a decision and everything fell apart?
- 17:42I told you so. You shouldn't have done that.
- 17:46Always Monday morning quarterbacks always telling you
- 17:48how you should have handled it differently.
- 17:50Well, that's the last thing you want to hear at that point in
- 17:52time because, like, you already made the decision and
- 17:54everything's messed up. You don't need to tell me that.
- 17:56I already know I've messed up, right?
- 17:59So he says. And now I urge you in verse 22
- 18:04to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but
- 18:09only of the ship. Now they must.
- 18:10Some of them had to think he was nuts.
- 18:13The ship is going everywhere and it is like, no way, how are we
- 18:17not going to die? But Paul during this journey was
- 18:20also sharing the gospel. And I'm sure there was people on
- 18:24the ship at that time because of what was happening, said, hey,
- 18:27Paul, what do I need to do to be saved?
- 18:30Is there an afterlife? The other is, let me tell you
- 18:32about it. Let me tell you this life's real
- 18:34short. You want to put your trust in
- 18:37Jesus because one day you're going to leave this world and
- 18:40you want to be where he is. You don't want to be in hell.
- 18:43You want to be in heaven with the Lord.
- 18:45And he's made a way because of what Jesus did on the cross to
- 18:48die for us and to forgive us of our sins, to cleanse us, forgive
- 18:51us, give us new life. So there is probably a lot of
- 18:55deathbed conversions here. I always like visiting hospitals
- 18:59when someone's getting ready to die and they still have
- 19:02consciousness and their loved ones ask the pastor to go and
- 19:06talk to the person who's in the bed.
- 19:09The person in the bed knows that it's coming down the home
- 19:13stretch and they're going to pass from this life.
- 19:16And that's when you begin to tell them about the gospel.
- 19:19And I'm amazed. And how many people are
- 19:21definitely prepared at that point to hear it and to believe
- 19:25it and to depend on the Lord so they can go into heaven?
- 19:28Isn't that wonderful? God in his mercy, He does that.
- 19:32And occasionally someone will say anything.
- 19:34You don't know if they believed or didn't, but you know, you,
- 19:37you, you tell them the truth and you trust the Holy Spirit to do
- 19:40what only He can do. And so Paul's telling them
- 19:44there's not going to be any loss of life.
- 19:46And this is amazing here, verse 23.
- 19:48Now we know. And Acts 23 verse 11, Paul was
- 19:53in jail and he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to get the
- 19:56Rome. Jesus showed up personally and
- 19:59spoke to Paul and told him that you're going to get the Rome,
- 20:04don't worry about it, I'm going to get you there.
- 20:06So Paul tucked that down in his heart, a promise from God to
- 20:10hold on to. But now he's got another
- 20:13spiritual encounter. For there stood by me this night
- 20:17an Angel of the of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,
- 20:20saying, do not be afraid, Paul, you must be brought before
- 20:24Caesar. And indeed God has granted you
- 20:26all those who sail with you. So the Angel reminded Paul,
- 20:30don't you remember? Jesus told you you're going to
- 20:32get the roam. Paul's faith, I'm sure wasn't
- 20:35shipwrecked, but he's, you know, he's human.
- 20:38Like, you know this stuff. You know what's going to happen
- 20:40here? He needed the confirmation from
- 20:43the Lord that it was going to be OK and they were going to get
- 20:47through it. Don't be afraid, Paul.
- 20:51So Paul's being admonished not to be afraid.
- 20:54And fear is a horrible thing, isn't it?
- 20:57Fear can really mess you up. It can cause you to just freak
- 21:02out. It can cause you to be hopeless.
- 21:08It can cause you to hear stupid things in your head that are
- 21:12lies from the devil. It can.
- 21:14It can cause people to do horrible things.
- 21:16Fear. God hasn't given us a spirit of
- 21:19fear, the Bible says, but a power and of love and of a sound
- 21:24mind. When we have fear, we have to
- 21:28call it out as a lie because God does not give us that spirit,
- 21:34does He? And we have to acknowledge that
- 21:36and ask the Lord to replace the thoughts that we have that are
- 21:39causing the fear with the things that He tells us to think upon.
- 21:44Paul, think on these things, whichever things are pure,
- 21:48lovely, just, and a good report. That's a discipline.
- 21:54It's real easy to get down the fear track and to stay on that,
- 21:57right? No, I'm not going to fear, I'm
- 22:00not going to live with this in my head.
- 22:02Lord, take this out. Help me.
- 22:04Ask the Lord to help you. He will stabilize my thoughts.
- 22:08God give me truth to think on and not lies.
- 22:13Therefore take heart men. And He says that to us today.
- 22:18Take heart brothers and sisters, for I believe God that it will
- 22:22be just as it was as he told me. I believe God.
- 22:28Who do you believe in your life? You believe Fox News, CNN, Wall
- 22:34Street? Or do you believe the God of
- 22:37heaven, the creator of the universe?
- 22:41Everything in your life, in my life, is designed by God to
- 22:45cause our faith to increase, not to decrease.
- 22:49Adversity and trial and heartache and tragedy are
- 22:52allowed in our lives to deepen us, not to destroy us.
- 22:57If we believe God, no matter what, we're going to get
- 23:01through. Amen.
- 23:03If we don't believe God, it is hopeless.
- 23:06There is no answer apart from God Himself.
- 23:10So God tests us. And in every situation, He knows
- 23:13where you're at. Clark needs more faith.
- 23:17He needs to go deeper with me, and I'm going to allow this to
- 23:21occur so that he's on his face crying out to me like he never
- 23:24cried out to me before. Someone told me this morning
- 23:28they were moments from death. Kidney operating at 2%.
- 23:35A Christian told his brother that God will do whatever he has
- 23:40to do to get us back with him. It will allow adversity.
- 23:46It will allow us to get smacked around in life.
- 23:48It will allow all kinds of things to happen to us that we
- 23:51don't like and we don't think it's fair.
- 23:53Until finally we say, I give up Lord.
- 23:57We're so glad you joined us today on this edition of Living
- 24:00Waters of Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching through
- 24:03the Book of Acts, which is the only book that chronicles the
- 24:06history of the early church immediately after Jesus's
- 24:10ascension. It gives us a front row seat to
- 24:13how the Gospel began to move outwards, starting in Jerusalem
- 24:17and reaching into the heart of the Roman Empire.
- 24:20In just three decades, a small group of frightened ordinary
- 24:24believers became a bold, spirit empowered movement that
- 24:27transformed the known world. Acts is not just a history
- 24:32lesson. It's a reminder of what God can
- 24:34do when His people are surrendered, obedient and filled
- 24:38with the Holy Spirit. Their perseverance still
- 24:41inspires us today. May we follow their example and
- 24:46live faithfully for Christ in our own time.
- 24:49We hope today's message encouraged you.
