Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Elon Musk increases Twitter Checkmark Price to $11 on iOS/Apple Devices
Transcript
- 0:00Twitter's blue checkmark program is on halt right now and when it
- 0:04comes back you're going to see an increase in price of $11 per
- 0:09month. If you're on iOS currently it's
- 0:12eight dollars. So that's going to be a three
- 0:14dollar increase according to a report from the information.
- 0:18If you subscribe through the website, it'll cost you $7 per
- 0:22month, but it'll be more costly. If you use iOS, it's going to be
- 0:27offset for the Apple's App Store fees.
- 0:30Is Apple charges 30% fees to the Developers for the first year of
- 0:34subscription, but it drops to 15 percent for the second year,
- 0:38Twitter launched. This subscription plan for the
- 0:40verification check, mark on November 9th of 2022 and a
- 0:44charge user $7.99 per month. And if Twitter were to offset
- 0:48the App Store fees, it should charge ten dollars and 38 cents
- 0:52but the new price $11 makes it easier for accounting basically
- 0:57and Twitter owner, Elon Musk. Went crazy against Apple for
- 1:02pausing, advertisements on Twitter and they allege them of
- 1:06hating free speech in America because they pause advertising
- 1:11on Twitter, okay, think about that for a second.
- 1:14If you are pausing advertising on a platform that adjust had
- 1:18new management. Do you think that's fair?
- 1:21I think it is, if you don't know what's happening with the
- 1:24platform, if you don't know in which direction it's going to
- 1:27go, I think it's a fair assessment.
- 1:29To say, Hey, you know, let's let's pull back some spending on
- 1:32this platform. See how this all shakes out, and
- 1:35then a future if this works. Well, we can resume ad spending
- 1:39again on Twitter, so instead of saying like, hey, let's talk
- 1:44Apple. Let's talk to him, Ilan, went on
- 1:46a tirade, went absolutely nuts and alleged all of Apple of
- 1:51hating free speech in America. So, does that mean that if you
- 1:55don't advertise on a platform you hate free speech, I don't
- 1:59think. That's just my opinion, but it's
- 2:01something that Elon Musk said in a tweet and he also accused
- 2:06Apple threatening to withhold Twitter from its app store and
- 2:10then Ilan met. Tim Cook on a tour of apples,
- 2:13Cupertino campus and everything seemed.
- 2:16Okay, Ilan, even tweeted a picture of a, very beautiful
- 2:21pond that's in the Apple headquarters in the campus and
- 2:24they said that went well. So and Tim Cook said hey we're
- 2:28not actually going to To ban you from the App Store.
- 2:31I don't know where you got that from, like, who you heard that
- 2:33from, but that's not the case. And there's no consideration at
- 2:39all to boot Twitter off the Apple store.
- 2:42Plus, Apple brought the ants back to the platform, you know,
- 2:46it's about a hundred million dollars a year that they spend
- 2:49on this. So, to take those away to, you
- 2:52know, to save millions of dollars in advertising fees,
- 2:57while Twitter is being shaken up for a little bit.
- 2:59I Our stand from Apple's Viewpoint.
- 3:02So Elon, and the Tweet with the, the pond I want to clarify what
- 3:05he said in that we said good conversation among other things.
- 3:09We resolve the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being
- 3:12removed from the App Store Tim was clear that Apple never
- 3:15considered doing so. So this is kind of one of those
- 3:17things, right? As as a normal person that works
- 3:20in a normal job. 925, if you work in an office things that
- 3:23could have been a meeting, should have been an email.
- 3:26If things that should have been an email should have been a
- 3:28chat. So did Ilan really have to go to
- 3:31Cupertino to hang out with? Tim Cook for the day, talk to
- 3:35him and reassure himself. That Apple wasn't out to get him
- 3:39and that's you know that's a that's a thing that people do if
- 3:43they want to have a face-to-face meeting, I told understand that
- 3:45because sometimes it is better to have a face-to-face meeting
- 3:48with somebody, then it is to just send him a text and say hey
- 3:50Tim what's up with the App Store?
- 3:52Are you guys kicking ass off? But you can also talk to
- 3:55somebody in person and say, hey, hey Tim, what's going on, buddy?
- 3:58Do you want a boot us off from the Dora.
- 4:00And if so, why and do you hate free speech?
- 4:03I think Elon was in the wrong. I'm not going to apologize for
- 4:06for Ilan for the things that he said, because some of the things
- 4:10these are, then you have to understand, you have to look at
- 4:12the things that he says sometimes and they are a little
- 4:15bit off the wall and it's okay is an eccentric person.
- 4:18He says some things that you know, could be inflammatory your
- 4:21could be a little bit weird. That's fine.
- 4:23Everybody does it. Everybody says some weird stuff.
- 4:25So it's okay and Elon and Tim made up up and now Twitter is
- 4:31possibly going to charge $11 per month for a checkmark now, $11
- 4:39per month. What can you buy for $11?
- 4:40A month. This show is brought to you by
- 4:42backblaze, I use back place to back up my podcast.

- 5:16and you can restore return refund program so you can buy a

- 6:43Plays.com /l on backblaze.com Ilan backblaze.com Ilan, you can
- 6:52get a Netflix subscription or Paramount Plus or a Disney plus.
- 6:57So that's countless hours. Of entertainment per month and
- 7:01that's the engagement that Elon is looking for.
- 7:05If you're going to pay for something, you want to get your
- 7:07money's worth, is it worth your money to spend $11 per month on
- 7:12Twitter? And that's on a case-to-case
- 7:13basis? Is it something like myself?
- 7:16I have a podcast? Do I want the check?
- 7:18Mark to reassure. Everybody that I am actually me.
- 7:21Probably, I mean I pay the eight dollars now.
- 7:23I have a check mark, but will I pay $11 for this?
- 7:26Or will I just go to the website and And then confirm my
- 7:31subscription over there instead of iOS because it's only seven
- 7:34dollars on the website and then it's $11 on iOS, I signed up
- 7:38through iOS, the App Store fees pushing Ilan to go after the
- 7:43Apple secret text. So that's another thing that
- 7:47Elon was really worried about is that Apple kind of has a quote
- 7:51secret text. He tweeted about it and he said,
- 7:53did you know Apple puts a secret 30% tax on everything you buy
- 7:57through the App Store. If you're an app developer you
- 8:00Because they tell you when you sign up for it, they tell you
- 8:03exactly what the terms of service are.
- 8:05It's kind of long. So, I mean, I'm sure you
- 8:07wouldn't want to read the whole thing, but in there, if you're
- 8:11Elon Musk and if your Twitter of all things, you would have
- 8:14people that have actually gone through the terms of service and
- 8:18mitigated, those fees through other things.
- 8:21How could we offset this now? How can we offset this 30%, kind
- 8:25of tax on everything that you buy through the App Store?
- 8:28Ilan, said these fees. He's are a de facto Global Tax
- 8:31on the internet and I don't know if you agree with that or if you
- 8:35disagree with that. So you host the App Store and
- 8:39you host all the apps on the App Store and you have to pay for
- 8:41bandwidth for every single download of the app.
- 8:45So something like Twitter which is free to use if you sign up
- 8:49for, you know, with your email address, or your iOS or Android
- 8:52device, it's free to use. But how do you make money from
- 8:56that? Usually it's advertising but
- 8:58Elon wants to make a little bit more.
- 8:59So the Eight dollar a month charge is something that apple
- 9:04is like hey we got to make some money from hosting your files
- 9:08and also the millions of downloads that you have every
- 9:11month. You know, how many, how many
- 9:13terabytes of data is that. And also not just that.
- 9:16But the information that's going back and forth, they have the
- 9:18hosted in the platform, they have to, you know, have people
- 9:21working on the platform as well. So they have to pay those
- 9:24people. So, I understand.
- 9:25So it's kind of like you have a meeting hall, right?
- 9:28And if say, if somebody wants to Have a wedding at that meeting
- 9:30Hall, your charge them a fee, like okay, how many people are
- 9:33going to have? You got 50 people.
- 9:34Okay. Well if you can have 50 people,
- 9:36we're going to charge them x amount of dollars, you know?
- 9:39But if you have a million people, we could charge them
- 9:41about the same. But let's figure out a way to
- 9:44actually make this work for our business.
- 9:46So that's what Apple's doing with their app store.
- 9:48And I understand where elon's coming from.
- 9:51I totally understand it because you don't want to be charged 30%
- 9:55on every purchase. So you're only actually making
- 9:59sense. Every percent of the sale.
- 10:01If your Twitter, plus, you have to pay all of your employees
- 10:05with that seventy percent. So, if you jack up, the price is
- 10:08a little bit too $11 on iOS. I can understand, you know, you
- 10:12overcome the cost of doing business with Apple.
- 10:15So it's kind of a weird analogy that I made, but I think it
- 10:17makes sense and you know, Spotify also has to pay Apple in
- 10:23the App Store. You know, it's just the same
- 10:25rules as everybody else. So if you're going to do
- 10:27subscriptions through spot, Defy, if you can do them through
- 10:30Twitter, we've got to do them through anything else.
- 10:32Apple takes a 30% cut, so Spotify is kind of mad about
- 10:37that and you can get mad that. Apple takes thirty percent of
- 10:41what you make an iPhone download, but 30% of zero is
- 10:47still zero. So if you don't charge that 30%,
- 10:52you're not making any money. So $11 for a blue tick.
- 10:55Mark, is it? Good depends.
- 10:57But also are they going to upgrade the Other check marks as
- 11:01well in are you going to have a blue checkmark and you're going
- 11:03to have the other color? Check marks for other things
- 11:05like notable, personalities, you're going to have something
- 11:08for companies, you're going to have something for a
- 11:10government's. Those kind of things, they will
- 11:13be discussed in future episodes. We get more information about
- 11:16that. I appreciate you stopping by.
