- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Natasha, and she started her dream business with
- 0:02Speaker 1: just a couple of dollars in her home kitchen. Natasha
- 0:04Speaker 1: went from an idea in her head to putting it
- 0:06Speaker 1: on shelves and making it real. Two years later, her
- 0:10Speaker 1: products are stocked in stores across the country. This is
- 0:12Speaker 1: the story of how three lessons transformed Natasha Arumbi's last
- 0:16Speaker 1: dollars into a $ 2 million business.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I am Natasha Arumbi, aka the Vegan Patty Lady, and
- 0:22Speaker 2: my dream is to take vegan patties to the world.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We first met Natasha when she pitched at the Help
- 0:30Speaker 1: Bank Doorbell, a place where anyone can pitch their dream,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and if it's good, we help make it happen.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So I made the decision to pitch to Help Bank
- 0:37Speaker 2: because I knew that I couldn't scale on my own.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I needed some help with marketing, been doing it in
- 0:45Speaker 2: my kitchen at home. I was selling three mini cocktail
- 0:50Speaker 2: patties for six pounds, but they were starting to become
- 0:53Speaker 2: popular and yeah, I knew that there was something in
- 0:56Speaker 2: it at that point.
- 0:57Speaker 1: She still had a full-time job and nowhere near the
- 0:59Speaker 1: space she needed to scale.
- 1:01Speaker 2: She needed capital.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But before I invested anything, I needed to see that
- 1:04Speaker 1: she was all in. See if Natasha has what it
- 1:06Speaker 1: takes to be a successful entrepreneur and set her a
- 1:09Speaker 1: crazy challenge to make the world's largest vegan patty. If
- 1:13Speaker 1: she could pull this off, it would show me she
- 1:15Speaker 1: was willing to fight for her dream. And that's the
- 1:17Speaker 1: kind of person I want to invest in.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Obviously, I'd never, ever made a patty before, ever before June.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And then to come in November and say, I'm going
- 1:26Speaker 2: to make the world's biggest. I was scaling it in
- 1:29Speaker 2: my head, using that machine, that big dough machine. I've
- 1:33Speaker 2: never seen anything like that in my entire life.
- 1:35Speaker 1: We set her this challenge to see if she could
- 1:37Speaker 1: go all in and to see if those closest to
- 1:39Speaker 1: her were ready to go all in alongside her.
- 1:41Speaker 3: It is not many people like Tasha in terms of personalities.
- 1:43Speaker 4: It's just like sometimes she wants to run before she
- 1:46Speaker 4: can walk. And so sometimes that means that, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 4: you just don't want to be throwing money. Where's it
- 1:52Speaker 4: going to go to and what's that going to lead to?
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yes! It's here!
- 1:57Speaker 1: Natasha followed through on her word and completed the challenge successfully.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Everybody likes it. People were coming back for seconds.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Natasha needed about £ 10, 000 to get her business running. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: was ready to put in five, but I didn't want
- 2:08Speaker 1: to be the only one who believed in her dream. Actually...
- 2:11Speaker 1: You're not allowed to be here, I've just decided.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I want to talk to him on my own.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You've got to go away.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I'll carry on cleaning up, Patti. All right, then. Bye.
- 2:20Speaker 1: If this dream was going to work, the people around
- 2:22Speaker 1: her had to believe too, especially the one closest to her,
- 2:25Speaker 1: her husband. It's not easy giving up money. to back
- 2:29Speaker 1: a dream that may or may not happen.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I was wondering what that conversation was about, and I
- 2:33Speaker 2: was like, good luck with that, mate, because I know
- 2:36Speaker 2: my husband. If you can convince him, you are a
- 2:40Speaker 2: better man than me.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I feel like when I talk to her, that she
- 2:44Speaker 1: needs investment to make the business go to the next level,
- 2:47Speaker 1: but she's scared to spend the savings you've got. Here's
- 2:50Speaker 1: my deal. She needs £ 10, 000 to make this business work.
- 2:52Speaker 1: If you put £ 5, 000 in, I'll put £ 5, 000 in. I
- 2:54Speaker 1: want nothing in return.
- 2:55Speaker 3: I sort of had an inkling that was going to happen,
- 2:57Speaker 3: to be perfectly honest. My hesitation at that moment was,
- 3:00Speaker 3: in my head, because we've been saving for a deposit
- 3:02Speaker 3: for a house, I'm like, oh, she's going to put
- 3:04Speaker 3: us back. And it's a case of one step backward,
- 3:07Speaker 3: two steps forward.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Deal?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yes, it's a deal.
- 3:10Speaker 2: It's only money.
- 3:11Speaker 3: It's only money. If it takes five grand for my
- 3:14Speaker 3: wife to follow her dream, then that's life.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Me and your husband were chatting. So between the two
- 3:20Speaker 1: of us, I'm giving you £ 5, 000, your husband's giving you £ 5, 000.
- 3:24Speaker 1: We like to make your business real.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I was not expecting that. I thought Simon would give
- 3:38Speaker 2: me something, but not as much as he did. So
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was like, I've got 10K now. I can do
- 3:45Speaker 2: everything I need to do. So yeah, that was amazing.
- 3:48Speaker 1: After the challenge, Natasha finally had what she needed. £ 10, 000.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Enough to buy what she needed for her business to scale.
- 3:54Speaker 2: My local shopper told me, if you can get packaging,
- 3:58Speaker 2: I'll sell them here. And so I was like, I
- 4:01Speaker 2: need packaging. Immediately, I went to get a designer to
- 4:06Speaker 2: do the boxes.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Getting investment is like any sales process. You've got to
- 4:09Speaker 1: push every button, go to every single opportunity. and ask
- 4:12Speaker 1: around and Natasha did it.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I am so excited. I've just had the best meeting.
- 4:20Speaker 2: The second investment was the pitch to D4. That was
- 4:23Speaker 2: a competition that we won. It's not just a nice idea.
- 4:27Speaker 2: This is a good business idea. Clearly they felt so
- 4:31Speaker 2: too because I won that £ 20, 000 which was.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Natasha had just raised another £ 20, 000 for her business, but
- 4:40Speaker 1: she'd still have to push hard to turn that money
- 4:42Speaker 1: into real growth.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So I have been going to networking events, like every
- 4:46Speaker 2: time someone says there's an event and buyers are going
- 4:49Speaker 2: to be there, I'm like, oh, I'm coming. But that
- 4:50Speaker 2: has been a massive part, and one said event, I
- 4:53Speaker 2: actually was sponsoring the event. And the Ocado buyer tasted
- 4:58Speaker 2: the patties and she said, these are amazing. It was
- 5:01Speaker 2: not long after that that it was... Yeah, all roads
- 5:06Speaker 2: lead to a condo shelter.
- 5:07Speaker 1: This was a huge deal. Natasha had just gotten into Ocado,
- 5:11Speaker 1: which is basically the UK's Amazon for groceries. But that
- 5:14Speaker 1: win came with a catch. She now had to fulfil
- 5:16Speaker 1: thousands of orders by hand. And the money she'd raised
- 5:19Speaker 1: was disappearing fast.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It was very nerve-wracking. We couldn't keep up with demand.
- 5:26Speaker 2: The Ocado order was huge. And the amount of workload,
- 5:29Speaker 2: I had no idea what it would yield. I am
- 5:34Speaker 2: working full-time. I have to make patties after work. And
- 5:37Speaker 2: my job is not a play-play job. It's a serious,
- 5:40Speaker 2: proper job. I can't coast in my job. Sometimes I
- 5:44Speaker 2: do 17-hour shifts in the kitchen, like sometimes I don't eat.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And because I was the only one who'd ever made
- 5:50Speaker 2: the pays, everybody that I was getting to help me
- 5:53Speaker 2: has no idea how to make pay. They're not skilled
- 5:55Speaker 2: at it. They haven't been trained. So I would often
- 6:00Speaker 2: have to leave the room and go and cry because
- 6:03Speaker 2: I didn't want them to be called mad to them.
- 6:06Speaker 2: It was it. became a really tough gig.
- 6:11Speaker 1: If you want to make your dream happen you have
- 6:13Speaker 1: to push through the pain because success doesn't just test
- 6:16Speaker 1: your idea it tests you.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I've grown up in church. Church is all I knew.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I think I've been to two parties but I didn't
- 6:24Speaker 2: know God then how I know God now. I think
- 6:27Speaker 2: when I was in that space those years ago I
- 6:31Speaker 2: was tired when I came home. I was frustrated but
- 6:35Speaker 2: I think Because I always had in my mind something
- 6:38Speaker 2: is going to shift. I know it's going to, I
- 6:40Speaker 2: don't know what it is, but we're not going to
- 6:42Speaker 2: stay here. There was always an element of excitement. I
- 6:46Speaker 2: think otherwise you'd end up depressed and I've never got
- 6:49Speaker 2: to depression. So I'm always like, do you know what?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Something's going to happen and that's how I live my life.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I think belief is absolutely fundamental to my journey. I
- 7:00Speaker 2: don't think I would have got to this point without
- 7:03Speaker 2: believing it was possible. You act based on what you
- 7:07Speaker 2: believe is possible. That's why I am now here today
- 7:10Speaker 2: in this vision, being able to leave my job and
- 7:13Speaker 2: have a future that is going to be different. Beyond conceivably,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, anything I could have asked or imagined. I
- 7:21Speaker 2: believe this is an assignment. It's a dip. The biggest
- 7:26Speaker 2: issue now is people want it and I can't do
- 7:30Speaker 2: it on my own. I need machines and I need
- 7:32Speaker 2: a place big enough to store the machines. I can't
- 7:35Speaker 2: afford to pay people to help me. So that's a
- 7:38Speaker 2: big challenge. kind of hurdle that right now I'm just riding.
- 7:41Speaker 1: At this point, Natasha was in talks with a major
- 7:44Speaker 1: distributor discussing a deal that could change her life. And
- 7:47Speaker 1: with that opportunity on the table, her business was now
- 7:50Speaker 1: valued in the seven figures.
- 7:51Speaker 2: That investment would be the missing piece from struggling, just
- 7:57Speaker 2: trying to make it do, to actually having a business
- 8:00Speaker 2: that can now generate enough wealth and profit to.
- 8:05Speaker 1: explode today she's raising two hundred thousand dollars at a
- 8:08Speaker 1: two million dollar valuation proof that when you commit fully
- 8:11Speaker 1: keep pushing and believing in yourself you can build anything
