- 0:00The station where our veterans voices are heard MBR talk.
- 0:06Hey, thanks for supporting our channel by watching and
- 0:08listening find. Us on the web, at MB Radio dot
- 0:11US when life shapes us, when love
- 0:28anchors us, when lost changes us.
- 0:32We are not left behind. We are carried forward, held by
- 0:37faith, rooted in purpose, finding our way.
- 0:43This is carried forward a space for stories of resilience,
- 0:48purpose and forward resolve. Good morning.
- 1:03How are you welcome to carried forward.
- 1:05As you can see, it's just me today.
- 1:07I don't have anyone I'm interviewing, so it'll be a
- 1:11shorter episode, but hopefully just as valuable.
- 1:16And I was I was wrecking my brain for like, what should I
- 1:20talk about today? And there's a couple of
- 1:22different things that I'm going to touch on today, but one was
- 1:25just what's going on right now and why I don't have an
- 1:28interviewee is because I did have a set up an interview and
- 1:34then I, I had asked someone else and it just didn't work out.
- 1:38So, and that's OK. I mean, that's how life is.
- 1:42And it, when I was thinking about this topic, I was thinking
- 1:46that is exactly kind of how my life has gone.
- 1:49Like I had a plan in place and, and I, and I smile just because
- 1:58like you got a smile through through the pain sometimes, but
- 2:02like life doesn't go as as you thought it should, what you had
- 2:11planned and that that's done just in my case, that's across
- 2:15the board. And that goes from like small
- 2:18little hiccups to people not being able to be interviewed to
- 2:26your husband dying or a divorce, you know, And so today I'm just
- 2:30going to talk about like my perspective.
- 2:32It's not the way of doing it, but a perspective on, you know,
- 2:38when, when plans change, what do you carry forward?
- 2:42How do you handle that? We'll, we'll go.
- 2:45I'll use a, a simple example as like my week and then a broader
- 2:50example as my life. So I hope that you can join me
- 2:54today. Take a little while to listen
- 2:57and I hope this blesses you in some way or someone that you
- 3:01know. So like today, today it's me
- 3:06because I did have some interviews planned, but they
- 3:09didn't work out. And I mean, that's completely
- 3:11understandable. Things happen.
- 3:13And so I thought, well, you know what, maybe I'll just do a
- 3:16broadcast day where you guys are looking at things that I, that
- 3:21I've already recorded and done, but I know I've gone to every
- 3:27other Tuesday. So you have plenty of time to do
- 3:29that now on the Tuesdays that I'm not talking to you.
- 3:34And I enjoy doing this podcast because one, it is supporting a
- 3:40wonderful network, the military Broadcast radio that helps us
- 3:44veterans have a voice and share what our thoughts are.
- 3:49And they're able to do that through contributions, sponsors,
- 3:56and, and we're able to have this platform and learn how to do it
- 4:00at no cost to us. And that is just wonderful.
- 4:04And please get out there and support the military broadcast
- 4:09radio because they don't only have podcast, but they have many
- 4:13other things to offer and they're and they're good to us.
- 4:16They teach us how to do this, but that I I digress, I'm
- 4:20getting on another tangent, but please get out there and look at
- 4:23other my brothers and sisters out there that are have their
- 4:28own podcasts, see what we have to offer out there.
- 4:32But you know, I was like, OK, well, what am I going to do now?
- 4:38And and so I'm talking about it, right.
- 4:43Life plan changes and what do we carry forward?
- 4:47It's it's I think what we do with that.
- 4:52I have a magnet on my refrigerator says that life is
- 4:56all about what we do with Plan B, right?
- 4:59It's always about figuring. It's not always about figuring
- 5:03out what to do with what we need to do to make the original plan
- 5:07work. And I will say the Lord has been
- 5:10working in my heart of late to bring to drive that home to me
- 5:18because we all want our original plans to work out.
- 5:22Like I wanted to be able to do interviews today.
- 5:24I wanted to be in the the season of empty nest nestness with my
- 5:33late husband Andy and us travel and have a wonderful time
- 5:36together. But that is just not what what
- 5:40has happened. And So what I and believe it or
- 5:44not, in all these years since his passing, I have been doing
- 5:49all the things to to get through it right.
- 5:55I've been going to the grief shares, I've been going to the
- 6:06widow groups, I've been going to the retreats, I've been
- 6:09traveling, I've been reading the books, listening to the podcast,
- 6:16and of late, probably more than ever been asking the Lord to
- 6:20help me. And of course, that's when I'm
- 6:23feeling the most peace. I just asking the Lord to like,
- 6:27OK, I had a plan. Obviously that's not the plan
- 6:33that's working. So what do you need me to do?
- 6:39And I will say that and I've made peace with it.
- 6:43I think that's the most important piece of it is that
- 6:48and you know, I I talked with the counselor Wounded Warrior
- 6:52Project is a huge piece of my life now that I have a coach
- 6:56that I talked to weekly and she's helped me just one.
- 7:04I would say when things don't go your way, it's been beneficial
- 7:08in my life to to do the things right, even if even if at the
- 7:15moment they're not doing anything for you.
- 7:18I have those tools now that I've brought with me.
- 7:20I've learned and I'm in a better headspace to be able to use
- 7:25those tools. So does that make sense?
- 7:28Like because there was a moment that I was like, I've done all
- 7:34these things and they and I feel no better.
- 7:37So have I wasted my time? But now that I have like just
- 7:41given it all to the Lord and made peace with like this is my
- 7:45life. And and that probably sounds
- 7:52silly to everyone, or maybe it doesn't if you've been in this
- 7:55situation, but you have to like switch in your perspective of
- 8:01like this is your life. There is your you know, you're
- 8:05not going to make it look like it did.
- 8:08You can't, you know, plug in someone to to kind of fit that,
- 8:13that that life right. And you honestly, I've just
- 8:21given it to the Lord and going Lord, you know, obviously the
- 8:26life that I had planned is not the one that is going to be set
- 8:30before me. What do I do now?
- 8:33And, and honestly, accepting that, you know, and I guess
- 8:42that's the key is accepting that good or bad, happy or sad, that
- 8:50this is your life. And then what are you going to
- 8:54do with it? How are you going to make it a
- 8:58life that you're living right? We, you know, because we all
- 9:04make plans and they don't always work out.
- 9:09But I think the key part of living a joyful life or living a
- 9:15life of, for me, it's peace and contentment and not always
- 9:21striving like because I'm very much a researcher, I'm very much
- 9:24a striver of like I got to do better.
- 9:27I, you know, if I, if I take this one more course, I read
- 9:31this one more book, then then I'm going to feel better.
- 9:34It's going to make sense, right? And that is not always the case.
- 9:40I think the biggest growth I've had of of all is 1 accepting
- 9:47like there's nothing I can do to make this better, to make my
- 9:54life better. And I, and I know I've shifted
- 9:59like perspectives of like things didn't work out with my
- 10:03interviewees, but I'm, I'm trying to relate that to, to how
- 10:09life, you know, life doesn't always work out and we got to
- 10:12make, make it work. Except that.
- 10:15And like, if I wouldn't accept that the interviewees weren't
- 10:19coming, coming, then I would have never spoke to you about
- 10:23these things, right? But I, you know, but we got to
- 10:25wake up. And it's not like for me anyway,
- 10:31it's not doing the things that you need to do to accept it.
- 10:36It's getting quiet, slowing down and, and just going like there
- 10:45is nothing that I can do to make this better or to change this.
- 10:53I don't know if that makes sense.
- 10:56Hopefully it does. And and I'm I'm not getting in a
- 11:00big spectrum. Like, of course there's things
- 11:03that you can do in your life to make your life better, right?
- 11:09And part of that is accepting. But I'm just saying for me, like
- 11:14I do the things I like, talk to the people, I go to the classes,
- 11:23I get the education, I do the research.
- 11:26But all that is not going to help me if I've never just said
- 11:32this is my life, right? And this is where I'm at.
- 11:39Hopefully that is coming across as what as I intended.
- 11:44And for me, the Lord has helped me do that.
- 11:48He's helped me get quiet. He's helped me slow down.
- 11:51He's helped me not knowledge it to death, if that makes sense.
- 11:57Because that is that is my hang ups.
- 12:00It's like I will research and find all the definitions and
- 12:07read all the books, listen to all the podcasts trying to to
- 12:12knowledge it to death. And sometimes that's not what
- 12:15you need. Sometimes you just need to
- 12:19accept and stop trying to understand things.
- 12:25And I, I'm sure there's other people out there that probably
- 12:29do that too. I'm I'm sure I'm not the only
- 12:33one, but even if I am is that can go across the board.
- 12:36Whatever you do to make something to cope with something
- 12:47like whatever your go to is, sometimes you got to lay that
- 12:52down and go, OK, I'm not using that tool anymore.
- 12:58I'm just going to be here right now and ask the Lord to help you
- 13:02in that. And that has made such a world
- 13:05of difference. It's I'm a little slower than
- 13:07others. It's taken me a little while, I
- 13:10guess 10 years, I mean, but I will say that the things that
- 13:16I've done to get here have helped me so much.
- 13:20Like I've now, now that I've slowed down and start to accept
- 13:24I do have the tools to start like realizing what other than
- 13:33the loss of my husband has caused me grief and what coping
- 13:39mechanisms that I have no longer serve me.
- 13:48And what other things that haven't gone as planned have
- 13:55caused me to behave in ways that I don't respect or the person
- 14:03that I want to be right. And I think these are the things
- 14:08that we have to ask ourselves and that has helped me so much.
- 14:12Like who? Who do I want to be in this life
- 14:16that has been given to me? And what am I doing that is not
- 14:25feeding that person, right? And I believe me, I do plenty of
- 14:30things that don't feed that person or feed that life that I
- 14:33want to be. But I'm working with the Lord
- 14:36to, to see the things that that I didn't see before, right?
- 14:46I've asked him, I've prayed and asked the Lord to show me sins
- 14:51and habits and ways in my life that are 1 not honoring to him
- 14:58and often times very dishonoring to him.
- 15:01And then what's not honoring to the life that that he has for
- 15:07me, right? And that has made such a huge
- 15:10difference. Of course, it's not overnight,
- 15:14but I have such peace about it. One, accepting like, OK, Lord,
- 15:20this is what you have for me, let's walk this together.
- 15:25And two, please show me where I need to do better and what what
- 15:34has been dishonouring to you, sinful to myself and to you?
- 15:41Please show those. And he has been showing me so
- 15:47quickly, so quickly, and then bringing people into my life to
- 15:54help me pray through those things, to help me work through
- 15:57those things. It's just been amazing.
- 16:00It truly has been and it's just me sitting down and getting
- 16:04quiet like I said and asking those things and and giving him
- 16:10the time he needs to speak to me and seeking out others that are
- 16:16good at that. Right.
- 16:19I would say I am someone that typically like turns inward or
- 16:26to a book or to, you know, an expert, but I've been seeking
- 16:30out community and he has allowed beautiful people to come in my
- 16:34life that that know how to do these things that know how to go
- 16:39to get quiet and ask the Lord to answer hard questions.
- 16:42Do they always do the answers always show up as I expect?
- 16:46Absolutely not. But but they do show up and it's
- 16:52just been beautiful to just go, OK, this is not the life that I
- 17:05wanted. This is not the plan I had, but
- 17:09Lord, this must be your plan. So you help me walk this
- 17:15journey. And I've had unexpected
- 17:17conversations. I've had rest when I didn't, you
- 17:21know, I didn't think rest was productive, but it is.
- 17:26It truly is. I've had different opportunities
- 17:29show up that I would have never imagined that I will talk about
- 17:36in the future that I could have never imaged imagined me going.
- 17:44And you know, just helping others in ways that are just
- 17:51surprising I by pausing and just having time to not always be
- 18:04what I think is productive, right?
- 18:07It's just given me due direction.
- 18:09It's given me time to think. It's given me peace and to see
- 18:15like what God is doing in my life that I would have never
- 18:18expected or anticipated or even imagined, right?
- 18:26So it's just like sometimes we have to slow down, go in a
- 18:33different direction, and most importantly accept that
- 18:37different direction. I think that's been the huge
- 18:39change in my life. If you guys would just like
- 18:42share in my comments like a time of something that that's gone a
- 18:48different way, that you didn't choose what eventually LED you
- 18:54to something meaningful, I would love that.
- 18:56Please share. Share with me because I do feel
- 19:00that the Lord is walking me through the season to lead me to
- 19:04something very meaningful. And like I said, this isn't
- 19:11going to be a very long episode. I, I hope this has blessed you
- 19:16in some way talking about this because like it's the key parts
- 19:20are acceptance, slowing down, allowing the Lord to speak to
- 19:24you and not carrying forward everything that you know, Like
- 19:36sometimes we got to let things go, right?
- 19:38Our old expectations, we got to let our disappointments go.
- 19:43We got to let our guilt go. We got to let relationships that
- 19:50you had hopes for and they have changed, be that friendship or
- 19:54romantic, got to let those go and not carry them forward.
- 20:00I think the identity that you had for yourself, sometimes you
- 20:04got to not carry that forward and be open to a new identity.
- 20:09Which has been huge for me. A key thing I've had to let go
- 20:15of and not carry forward is other people's expectations of
- 20:20our my life to, I mean other people's and my own expectations
- 20:28for my life. A version of ourselves that
- 20:36we're afraid to release, right? I think that's huge for me
- 20:41because I think developing a Shawna on her own, without Andy
- 20:46or out the idea of Andy was very frightening to me because I love
- 20:51that Shawna. She was a rock star like she was
- 20:57amazing. That version of Shawna with Andy
- 21:02and to release that version. I've been afraid to do that.
- 21:08I, I have tried to, I've tried everything I can to find that
- 21:13person, but to but I had not truly accepted like this is
- 21:18Shawna without Andy. I guess I would just say like
- 21:25maybe moving forward isn't just about deciding where we're
- 21:28going, it's deciding what deserves to come with us and
- 21:33what we need to accept. I, I am getting ready to leave
- 21:45on a road trip sometime soon. And you know, that makes me
- 21:50think of like when we choose to go on a road trip, we don't take
- 21:55our whole house with us, right? So we think about what do we
- 21:59need, what can stay home and what's worth carrying forward.
- 22:04And that's what I'm saying is like, we need to choose and
- 22:07accept what we're going to bring with us and who we are right now
- 22:15and, and allow like not be afraid to release some things
- 22:24that even were wonderful like that were part of like some of
- 22:29the best parts of us, right? I think that it's important that
- 22:33we realize that the things that that we accept and want to carry
- 22:41forward with us and, and to, to focus on who we want to become
- 22:50and to feed, like I said earlier, like you're feeding
- 22:53that version of you. And what I'm trying to
- 23:00personally, personally trying to leave behind in the season and,
- 23:05and what I want to intentionally take with me is what I've been
- 23:09focusing on lately. I've, and that means that I've,
- 23:12I've walked through some hard layers of grief that are beyond
- 23:18just Andy, like grief from my childhood and, and, and
- 23:23learning, like coping mechanisms that I picked up in my childhood
- 23:27that that I started bringing with me.
- 23:29But releasing those to the Lord. And most importantly, if you
- 23:33don't get anything else from this episode is like it's
- 23:37acceptance for for what your life is right now, even if
- 23:43you're having a bad time. Like I'm accepting that I'm
- 23:47going through a hard time right now.
- 23:51So when I accept that, I can start working towards becoming
- 23:56the person that I want to be. Does that make sense?
- 23:59At least that's what what what has helped me tremendously.
- 24:04And asking the Lord into that space, like really asking him
- 24:09into that space and making time for him to answer has been a
- 24:14huge, huge change for me. Let's see, maybe something in
- 24:19your life hasn't gone according to planned either.
- 24:24I'm sure. I'm sure that's true.
- 24:27And maybe you're trying desperately to get back to how
- 24:29you thought you were supposed to be.
- 24:31And I would just say accept where you're at right now and
- 24:35move from there. That's helped me.
- 24:38And ask the Lord to be in that place.
- 24:48And just be like what I'm carrying simply because I've
- 24:53always carried it and I don't want to accept this reality.
- 24:57I think that's the hardest piece is like when you don't want to
- 25:00accept your reality. That can be so hard, but taking
- 25:04the time to accept it and going OK, I accept this.
- 25:09This is where I'm at, good or bad.
- 25:12How can I move forward from here?
- 25:16Where does the road lead from here and asking the Lord to show
- 25:20you those. I think that is all I have for
- 25:25you today. I hope this has been helpful and
- 25:28wasn't like jumbled, but I think the most important things that
- 25:35have in the season of my life that I've come through and that
- 25:39I want to share with you is one, accepting where you're at, not
- 25:45clinging to what you were or who you were, but realizing who you
- 25:50are right now. And then moving forward from
- 25:54there and choosing what you want to carry with you forward and,
- 26:02and realizing that it's not always going to look like it
- 26:05did. And to hold on to the values and
- 26:11the, the core of who you are and ask the Lord in that place with
- 26:19you and ask him to carry you in the direction that he needs you.
- 26:26And to put people in your life, put people, places, things in
- 26:34your life that will help you go in the direction that he needs
- 26:39you to go. And it makes such a huge
- 26:42difference. You will be so much more at
- 26:45peace and not only asking him, but giving him time to answer
- 26:51you. That means getting quiet.
- 26:53That means slowing down. That means giving him some time
- 26:57in your day to help you realize. And no, it's not easy and
- 27:03sometimes you have to start over, but taking the time to do
- 27:09it. And even if like, for instance,
- 27:12that you don't like where your life is right now and you don't
- 27:16want to accept it, but do it anyway.
- 27:20That's what has helped me. Like just going, OK, this is not
- 27:26the life that I planned. This is, I don't want to even
- 27:28accept that this is my life, but I'm going to and asking the Lord
- 27:32to help you with that and to help you move forward and to
- 27:39help you find the people in your life to show you how to do that
- 27:44better. Thank you so much for joining me
- 27:49today. I invite you to share this with
- 27:53others if it's blessed you in any way.
- 27:59Yeah. So thank you.
- 28:01I hope you come back Tuesday after next.
- 28:04I I will. Sure I will have someone to
- 28:07interview. Hopefully it'll be my sister.
- 28:11And if not, then it'll be someone just as interesting and
- 28:14lovely and hearing their story. I hope this was helpful.
- 28:19Please share it if you felt that it was, and I will talk to you
- 28:24soon. Have a wonderful day.
