- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to the Pastor's Perspective Program. 888-564-6173 is
- 0:22Speaker 1: the number to call. Again, 888-564-6173 is the number to
- 0:26Speaker 1: call if you'd like to talk to Brian Broderson. He
- 0:30Speaker 1: is pastor emeritus at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in Southern California.
- 0:33Speaker 1: California. You can get more information about his ministry at echoesofmercy.com.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We also have Pastor Phil Metzger of Calvary Chapel San Diego.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The church website there is uh CalvarySD.com. And I see
- 0:46Speaker 1: Phil has his San Diego Padres cap on to represent
- 0:50Speaker 1: San Diego today.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Gotta do it, man. Gotta do it. Gotta give them
- 0:54Speaker 2: a shot. Hopefully we, uh, pull off this wild card
- 0:57Speaker 2: we lost to them last year. This is our, this
- 0:59Speaker 2: is our year to then, yeah. Oh wow. So it's like, um,
- 1:05Speaker 2: baseball playoff and World Series time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This
- 1:09Speaker 2: is the wild card like week, and then, uh, and
- 1:12Speaker 2: then it's, yeah, so Padres made an incredible second half
- 1:16Speaker 2: of the year comeback to put themselves here and
- 1:20Speaker 2: And um they still got to get through arguably, you know,
- 1:23Speaker 2: the Brewers and then the Dodgers so that's really exciting always, always,
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know, and I'm in, I know you guys are
- 1:29Speaker 2: in Dodger land, so there's no love for me. I
- 1:32Speaker 2: get it, but I don't care. I don't care.
- 1:35Speaker 2: It doesn't matter to me.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I was raised an Angel fan and we did horrible
- 1:39Speaker 1: this year, so I can't defend anybody, even though there's
- 1:42Speaker 1: people asking me to defend the Dodgers. I can't quite
- 1:45Speaker 1: do it because, uh, my team is long gone. So, uh, hey,
- 1:48Speaker 1: I hope, I hope whoever team you root for root for,
- 1:51Speaker 1: wherever you are, I hope your team wins. That's, that's
- 1:54Speaker 1: where I'm at, you know.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I've
- 1:55Speaker 1: never, I don't have a dog in the
- 1:56Speaker 2: fight. I've never had, uh, a baseball team that I've,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you know, I mean.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Uh, grew up in LA when I was young, so
- 2:04Speaker 2: the Dodgers were the Dodgers, and, but, you know, I
- 2:07Speaker 2: never really gave much thought to that. I never, I
- 2:10Speaker 2: never was much of a baseball guy. I think the
- 2:13Speaker 2: last time I was interested in
- 2:16Speaker 2: Ah, baseball was when the Padres.
- 2:22Speaker 2: With Steve Garvey.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Went to the World Series and did they win it?
- 2:29Speaker 2: I don't, I don't remember. Padres have never won the
- 2:31Speaker 2: World Series. OK, but they did go, uh, and they
- 2:34Speaker 2: went with Garvey and I remember watching that, that World Series. So, yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, 1984,
- 2:41Speaker 1: that's what Johnny Gordon says.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Johnny, 1984, that's the year they went. Yeah,
- 2:46Speaker 1: that's what Johnny says. Yes,
- 2:47Speaker 2: really,
- 2:48Speaker 1: 1984,
- 2:49Speaker 2: was it? Yeah, I mean, they're, they're the, they're the
- 2:52Speaker 1: Clippers. Deloitte say that. I stand corrected.
- 2:55Speaker 2: We're the, we're the Los Angeles Clippers of like the, um,
- 2:58Speaker 2: MLB where, you know, you go, wow, this is gonna
- 3:00Speaker 2: be a great year, and then it, it just falls apart. Yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 2: falls apart, yeah, you know, I got it with football.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I got stuck with just being a Rams fan, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: growing up.
- 3:10Speaker 2: There and then my, my stepdad, his uncle.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Um, was a guy named Crazy Legs Hirsch who
- 3:20Speaker 1: played
- 3:20Speaker 2: for the Rams back in the, yeah, like the 40s,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, so it was a Rams, um, definitely a
- 3:27Speaker 2: Rams vibe around the house and, and, you know, it
- 3:31Speaker 2: just kind of sticks with you and then you don't
- 3:33Speaker 2: even wanna be a Rams fan and, and then you're like, why,
- 3:37Speaker 2: why do I even care.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And I saw they lost to who did they lose to?
- 3:41Speaker 2: They lost to somebody yesterday to the 49ers week one, babe. No, no,
- 3:46Speaker 2: week 1 49er victory, 3 and 0, but they, but
- 3:51Speaker 2: they lost, uh, but the Rams lost to somebody else yesterday. Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 2: they lost to, um, they lost to Denver. Denver, yes,
- 3:58Speaker 2: that's right, it was to Denver, yeah, yeah, so you know.
- 4:03Speaker 2: What a, what a lame, what a lame start.
- 4:07Speaker 1: So were you ever a fan of any team growing up?
- 4:09Speaker 1: I mean, baseball, football, hockey, basketball, anything? Oh yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 2: yeah, yeah. I mean, I was a, I was a
- 4:14Speaker 2: Rams fan. I hate to admit it, but you know
- 4:16Speaker 2: I was. But then, you know, they moved to Saint
- 4:19Speaker 2: Louis and it was like, OK, I'm, I'm not gonna
- 4:21Speaker 2: follow them to Saint Louis. You know, I was a
- 4:23Speaker 2: little bit of a Charger fan for a while, of course,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I lived in San Diego County for 13 years, so,
- 4:28Speaker 2: you know, had to, had to kind of
- 4:31Speaker 2: Swing a little bit toward the Chargers.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Um, like I said, they're the Clippers of the NFL. They're,
- 4:39Speaker 2: they're the NFL Clippers. That's the way it goes. That's
- 4:41Speaker 2: so true.
- 4:43Speaker 2: That's so true, and uh, so, um.
- 4:49Speaker 2: But you know, I, the last few years I've, I've
- 4:51Speaker 2: kind of liked the Forty-Niners, but man, they just got
- 4:53Speaker 2: slacked last year. It's like what happened because they looked
- 4:56Speaker 2: like they had such a strong thing going and then
- 4:58Speaker 2: it all just unraveled, I think, in the, we get
- 5:01Speaker 2: injured so much, man, and we're
- 5:04Speaker 2: We already have 9 starters injured after 3 games if
- 5:08Speaker 2: you could believe it. So, but, but we're, um, we're
- 5:11Speaker 2: getting most of them back and, um, yeah, I think overall,
- 5:15Speaker 2: so is, is Purdy still the quarterback? Oh, and he's,
- 5:18Speaker 2: he's the, he's got the most, um, thrown.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Touchdowns of anybody in the league so far. He's having
- 5:24Speaker 2: a phenomenal. So, hey, so far, knock on wood, Niners
- 5:27Speaker 2: look pretty good and we're having fun. One last sports thing,
- 5:30Speaker 2: even I know people tuned in today to just get
- 5:33Speaker 2: the sports report from people who have no idea what
- 5:35Speaker 2: they're talking about. Obviously faster in sports.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But what, what about, what about the Chiefs? Are they,
- 5:42Speaker 2: are they making it some kind of a comeback, or
- 5:45Speaker 2: are they still, they're, they're, they're, I think they're 3
- 5:47Speaker 2: and 0 as well, and, um, the Taylor Swift effect
- 5:50Speaker 2: is in full, is in full effect. And no, it's awesome. They're,
- 5:54Speaker 2: they're great. It's a great team. They always find a
- 5:56Speaker 2: way to win, you know. That's the, so is Kelsey
- 5:58Speaker 2: still playing?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yeah, he's still, he, he's not just playing, he's still
- 6:02Speaker 2: stinking great. It's like I thought he was retiring with
- 6:06Speaker 2: his Taylor Swift now why they're gonna pay him 30
- 6:08Speaker 2: million to play off.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Well, that's so Taylor shows up at the games, right,
- 6:13Speaker 2: and sits in the booth. Honestly, honestly, they're paying to
- 6:17Speaker 2: make sure that the stadium is filled with Swifties. I
- 6:19Speaker 2: love it. I think it's great for football. I love sports, man.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It brings people together.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yes, but I, one last thing, Michael, I was a big, um,
- 6:30Speaker 2: Bruins fan back in the, back in the early days
- 6:34Speaker 2: when they had all of the guys, yeah, back in
- 6:36Speaker 2: Wooden's time, when
- 6:37Speaker 1: Kareem, well, Lou Elcinder was there,
- 6:39Speaker 2: yeah, uh, Sidney Wicks, uh, gosh, who, who else, so, yeah,
- 6:44Speaker 2: I mean they, they had guys that went into the
- 6:46Speaker 2: NBA and you know, nobody even remembers him anymore. Henry Bippy,
- 6:51Speaker 2: you know, he was like 5'3.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Those are the good days, the glory days of UCLA.
- 6:59Speaker 1: There was no question about that. No,
- 7:00Speaker 2: those were
- 7:01Speaker 1: good.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Those were good days.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And I guess the Padres play against the Chicago Cubs
- 7:04Speaker 1: tonight at 7 p.m. Is that right, Mr. Phil? I
- 7:06Speaker 1: think
- 7:06Speaker 1: that's when,
- 7:07Speaker 2: yeah, they, they play tonight, and I get to go
- 7:09Speaker 2: tomorrow night. I'm excited. It's a 23 game.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Series. So I'm gonna go tomorrow night. You know, it's
- 7:14Speaker 2: so fun. You get to go hang out with people,
- 7:15Speaker 2: with friends, and just have a big old party and
- 7:18Speaker 2: hopefully your team wins. And if they lose, you still
- 7:20Speaker 2: had a good time.
- 7:21Speaker 1: That's right.
- 7:21Speaker 1: That's right. Good memory. You put good memories together there.
- 7:24Speaker 1: So I hope everybody enjoys watching all the sports going
- 7:27Speaker 1: on during this sports season we're in with, uh, baseball and, uh, football.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Uh, and enjoy. And call 888-564-6173. This is the pastor's
- 7:38Speaker 1: perspective program. So if you have questions on the Bible,
- 7:41Speaker 1: the Christian faith, or how to live the Christian life,
- 7:43Speaker 1: now is your chance to get your answer. Or sports,
- 7:45Speaker 1: if you want to ask about the Padres or the
- 7:47Speaker 1: Chiefs or, or Taylor Swift, you can call in at
- 7:50Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 and you can get the answers to your questions right.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Here on the air from Pastor Brian and Pastor Phil. Uh,
- 7:59Speaker 1: we are gonna start off with some of the Facebook
- 8:01Speaker 1: questions that you can send to us at facebook.com/pastor's perspective,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but we do prefer to hear the sound of your voice. Uh,
- 8:08Speaker 1: so if you can call 888-564-6173. Again, 888-564-6173. This first
- 8:16Speaker 1: one comes from Kevin.
- 8:18Speaker 1: From Riverside County, and he writes, I'll try to be brief, uh,
- 8:23Speaker 1: and you may have already discussed this, but on the
- 8:26Speaker 1: subject of no more tears in heaven, is that before
- 8:29Speaker 1: the millennial rain or after? I ask because we have
- 8:32Speaker 1: been discussing this lately since some recent messages I, uh, heard, uh,
- 8:38Speaker 1: say that there are no more tears in heaven. You
- 8:41Speaker 1: won't be crying over loved ones that didn't receive the
- 8:45Speaker 1: new life in Jesus.
- 8:46Speaker 1: At the same time, all pastors have agreed that you
- 8:50Speaker 1: don't get dumber in heaven, but simply no more, so
- 8:54Speaker 1: you surely aren't going to forget your loved ones, even
- 8:57Speaker 1: those who didn't make it to heaven, right? I know
- 9:00Speaker 1: we are to do our best to bring everyone we
- 9:02Speaker 1: know along with us to heaven, but I have some
- 9:05Speaker 1: family members that are hard against the truth of Christ.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I know we all have until our last breath, and
- 9:12Speaker 1: God wants all to come to repentance.
- 9:14Speaker 1: But we know many won't. So, do you have an
- 9:19Speaker 1: opinion as to when we stop crying for our loved
- 9:23Speaker 1: ones who are lost?
- 9:25Speaker 1: Uh, we'll start with Phil on that one. What would
- 9:27Speaker 1: you say?
- 9:29Speaker 2: Well, I would, I would start by saying that when
- 9:31Speaker 2: the Bible says no more tears, it doesn't say no
- 9:35Speaker 2: more tears because you're sad about your lost loved ones.
- 9:39Speaker 2: So that would be a.
- 9:41Speaker 2: That's not what the tears, that's not what that's a
- 9:44Speaker 2: reference to. Um, when we talk about like, you know,
- 9:47Speaker 2: in heaven, like, yeah, we're gonna all of a sudden
- 9:49Speaker 2: not know what we didn't know, and there's some people who,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I think even Bobby, Brian, didn't Brian, Bobby used to
- 9:54Speaker 2: talk about that, like the belief that like we just
- 9:56Speaker 2: don't have knowledge of certain people anymore or you don't remember, yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 2: I don't, I don't remember that, um, but it could
- 10:04Speaker 2: be because Bobby had a lot of weird ideas about
- 10:07Speaker 2: a lot of things, you know.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I hope he's listening. I wish he was just for that.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'll tell him next time I talk to him that
- 10:14Speaker 2: we were bragging about his weird idea. Yeah, we're picking
- 10:18Speaker 2: on him. But I mean, and I've heard, I've heard
- 10:21Speaker 2: others talk about the idea like, you know, in heaven,
- 10:23Speaker 2: you know what you know, and you don't know, you
- 10:25Speaker 2: don't remember what you didn't, what's not there. And I,
- 10:28Speaker 2: I tend to think, I don't, I don't hold that
- 10:30Speaker 2: particular view. I tend to believe that in heaven.
- 10:34Speaker 2: We have, we're now we're made new, we're, we're, we're
- 10:38Speaker 2: made the way that we were made to be originally,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and so now our knowledge is no longer filtered by our,
- 10:45Speaker 2: like our temporary emotional mindset. So when we, when we
- 10:50Speaker 2: consider like God's righteousness, and those that are there and
- 10:53Speaker 2: those that are not there, we, we're able to process
- 10:56Speaker 2: that with like a holiness that we just don't have
- 10:59Speaker 2: right now.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And so we're, we're gonna see, uh, in ways we
- 11:05Speaker 2: don't see today, and I don't just mean like colors,
- 11:06Speaker 2: but just, we're gonna understand reality and truth and, and
- 11:11Speaker 2: what is right, um, not through our own lens, right? Even,
- 11:15Speaker 2: even now as a believer, I see right through what
- 11:18Speaker 2: benefits me, even if I don't want to do that,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I do.
- 11:22Speaker 2: But in heaven I'm gonna see and know and I'm
- 11:24Speaker 2: gonna understand rightness, righteousness in ways that I don't today. So,
- 11:28Speaker 2: the idea of tears, um, is not about me not
- 11:32Speaker 2: seeing people that I wish were there, um, I would,
- 11:35Speaker 2: I would, and, and by the way, the idea of
- 11:37Speaker 2: no more tears is after everything, it's kind of at
- 11:39Speaker 2: the very end of all things. And so I would
- 11:42Speaker 2: suggest that the idea of no more tears isn't even
- 11:44Speaker 2: like a, it's not even a physical thing, like I
- 11:46Speaker 2: know some people love to cry, like and like, wait,
- 11:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna get to heaven and not be allowed to
- 11:50Speaker 2: cry anymore.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I think the concept there is, it's a little bit
- 11:54Speaker 2: more metaphorical to like, there's, there's the disappointments are gone,
- 11:59Speaker 2: like all of life's sorrow and pain and disappointment, it's
- 12:03Speaker 2: just eradicated. We're now with the Lord.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And those things are no more. Yeah, and that's what,
- 12:08Speaker 2: that's really what the passage says, you know, God will
- 12:10Speaker 2: wipe away every tear from their eyes. There shall be
- 12:13Speaker 2: no more sorrow, crying, pain, or death for the former
- 12:18Speaker 2: things have passed away. But Phil, I think you're absolutely right,
- 12:22Speaker 2: and I've, I've thought that for a long time, and I,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I think, you know, Job, um.
- 12:28Speaker 2: God revealing Himself to Job and Job's response is to
- 12:34Speaker 2: me kind of a picture of where we will all
- 12:37Speaker 2: be in the future, you know, because everybody at times
- 12:42Speaker 2: these days will say, man, you know, you know, some
- 12:48Speaker 2: people will say God's got a lot of explaining to do,
- 12:50Speaker 2: you know, and I'm gonna
- 12:52Speaker 2: I'm gonna give him a piece of my mind or,
- 12:54Speaker 2: you know, some, some people go that far. Other people
- 12:57Speaker 2: are just saying, you know, I, I can't wait to
- 12:59Speaker 2: ask God why this, that or the other thing.
- 13:02Speaker 2: And I think the reality is when we see the Lord,
- 13:05Speaker 2: and this is what you see with Job, when Job
- 13:08Speaker 2: sees the Lord, because Job has all kinds of legitimate
- 13:11Speaker 2: questions because his whole life has just been completely wrecked,
- 13:15Speaker 2: you know, from his, the death of his children, the
- 13:18Speaker 2: loss of his possessions to the loss of his health
- 13:22Speaker 2: and the tremendous suffering that he goes through. And so
- 13:25Speaker 2: he's got a bunch of legitimate questions.
- 13:28Speaker 2: But yet when the Lord finally, you know, reveals Himself
- 13:32Speaker 2: to Job and says basically, OK, Job, here's your chance.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Ask me your questions, Job says, I have no questions. Uh,
- 13:41Speaker 2: I repent and dust and ashes, and I think it's
- 13:44Speaker 2: because of that when we see God for who He
- 13:48Speaker 2: actually is, that just clears up everything. And so I
- 13:52Speaker 2: don't think we're going to.
- 13:54Speaker 2: have those kinds of concerns. When we see the Lord,
- 13:59Speaker 2: we will know that God is right, and that's all
- 14:01Speaker 2: that matters in the end. So, and I think that's
- 14:04Speaker 2: what you were saying, right? Yeah, yeah, I mean, I just,
- 14:08Speaker 2: I don't imagine a scenario where we don't know.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Something like where we just don't know, like, oh, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: what do you think about your cousin? Oh, I don't
- 14:17Speaker 2: remember a cousin. I, I just, it just doesn't make sense,
- 14:20Speaker 2: but what does make sense is me being able to
- 14:22Speaker 2: say through a holy perspective that is like given by
- 14:26Speaker 2: God now, I'm able to understand his ways.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And, and, and, and we will forever say you are right, God,
- 14:34Speaker 2: you are totally right. You are, you're perfect in all
- 14:37Speaker 2: your ways, yeah, holy and true, just and righteous, yeah, that,
- 14:42Speaker 2: that will be the
- 14:42Speaker 1: word.
- 14:43Speaker 1: All right. Well, great answers from Pastor Brian and Pastor Phil.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Thank you, Kevin, for contacting us on Facebook, on Facebook.com/pastor's perspective. Again,
- 14:54Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is the number to call and we're gonna go
- 14:59Speaker 1: to Julie in San Marino who called 888-564-6173. Julie, welcome
- 15:05Speaker 1: to the program.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Thank you. Good, good afternoon. Good afternoon. Thank you for calling.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Uh, my question is about tithing. Um, I tithe to
- 15:17Speaker 1: my church.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And there, I know in the scriptures, it says to, uh,
- 15:23Speaker 1: regard with respect those who bring you godly wisdom. And
- 15:28Speaker 1: I stumbled across Kwave, oh, maybe a year and a
- 15:32Speaker 1: half ago, I don't know. And every time I walk
- 15:34Speaker 1: into the back bedroom, almost every time I turn it on.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It keeps me from turning on the radio and listening
- 15:41Speaker 1: to things that are not edifying. And I get the
- 15:45Speaker 1: most amazing.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Wisdom and help. And my question is, if we are
- 15:51Speaker 1: supposed to regard those who bring us godly wisdom, I
- 15:55Speaker 1: don't know what I'm supposed to do financially. I mean,
- 15:57Speaker 1: I have a particular, uh, pastor that I now have
- 16:01Speaker 1: been giving something to, not on K wave, but monthly,
- 16:04Speaker 1: along with a Christian station because the station brings me
- 16:10Speaker 1: many people and I've been doing that for years. But
- 16:13Speaker 1: now I've got this addition.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Of wonderful people on K wave and I thought, am
- 16:18Speaker 1: I supposed to give something to every pastor, or do
- 16:21Speaker 1: I give something to K wave?
- 16:23Speaker 1: Or what do I do?
- 16:25Speaker 1: That's a good question. What would you say, Pastor Brian?
- 16:29Speaker 2: Well, Julie, I think, I think your first commitment.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And maybe it is, um, should be to your local
- 16:36Speaker 2: church where you go, where you are, uh, part of
- 16:40Speaker 2: that community, where you're, you know, you're getting fed by
- 16:42Speaker 2: those who are ministering God's word to you and you're
- 16:46Speaker 2: you're contributing to the to the work there. I think
- 16:48Speaker 2: that's the first, um, place. And then I think with
- 16:52Speaker 2: these other areas, I think that with these, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: there's not like an obligation, so I think you can
- 17:00Speaker 2: be selective.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And just.
- 17:05Speaker 2: You know, open to the spirit leading, you know, maybe
- 17:07Speaker 2: the Lord would just put on your heart at some point.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Maybe you're listening to the station and you're listening to
- 17:15Speaker 2: a teaching and something really, really speaks to you and
- 17:18Speaker 2: you say, you know what, I, I wanna contribute to
- 17:21Speaker 2: that ministry. So you just make that decision that, you know,
- 17:24Speaker 2: this month or whatever it is, I'm gonna, you know,
- 17:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna send my check to this ministry here.
- 17:29Speaker 2: And so I, I think, again, as long as you
- 17:34Speaker 2: have as your, um, I I think your base idea
- 17:38Speaker 2: for giving being the place where you are primarily ministered to,
- 17:42Speaker 2: I think everything else is just it it is really
- 17:45Speaker 2: kind of selective and you, you make the choices based
- 17:48Speaker 2: upon what
- 17:50Speaker 2: You sense at the moment and how God's working in
- 17:53Speaker 2: your life through that speaker or maybe that station or
- 17:58Speaker 2: whatever the case. Phil, what do you think?
- 18:01Speaker 2: I totally agree. I think you just have to, I
- 18:05Speaker 2: think it's important to stay, stay connected to your local
- 18:07Speaker 2: church in that sense, but then after that, it's like
- 18:09Speaker 2: we have so much freedom in the Lord, right, to
- 18:11Speaker 2: just kind of go, you know, I, you know, I
- 18:14Speaker 2: always feel like if somebody has it.
- 18:17Speaker 2: In their heart to do something, you have to stop
- 18:19Speaker 2: and ask yourself like, am I, do I consider myself
- 18:23Speaker 2: just a generally generous human being, or is it possible
- 18:26Speaker 2: that the Holy Spirit is leading me to do something?
- 18:28Speaker 2: And I think most of us are not generally generous people,
- 18:32Speaker 2: and so then you say, well, gosh, if I sense that,
- 18:34Speaker 2: and it's probably from the Lord, then I should do that,
- 18:37Speaker 2: but to not feel any like obligation outside of, you know, what,
- 18:40Speaker 2: how the Lord's already leading you.
- 18:43Speaker 1: All right, very good. Uh, Julie, did that help? Um, yes, uh,
- 18:49Speaker 1: the issue is sort of that.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Kwave is so good. I get, I mean, some days
- 18:56Speaker 1: I go, oh, I want that CD. I, I don't
- 18:59Speaker 1: get these things. I did call once, but I don't
- 19:02Speaker 1: know whether to give a little to Kwave because they
- 19:05Speaker 1: support these fantastic pastors. And, um, I think I'm asking
- 19:11Speaker 1: partly because I,
- 19:14Speaker 1: If I had a bunch of money, it wouldn't matter.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I would simply start giving, passing it out, you know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: but I already give primarily, as you say, to my church, um,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and I, I'm just really excited about the people that
- 19:32Speaker 1: changed my life, and I hear things that I've never heard.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I hear teaching I haven't heard, and I'm very grateful,
- 19:39Speaker 1: and I think I will just try to do what
- 19:41Speaker 1: you said, do the best I can.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah and
- 19:45Speaker 1: uh
- 19:46Speaker 1: Occasionally, um,
- 19:49Speaker 1: Give a donation because these pastors are asking.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they're asking
- 19:54Speaker 1: for donations.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and, and of course, because, you know, it cost
- 19:59Speaker 2: money to, um, you know, produce a radio program and
- 20:03Speaker 2: it costs money to purchase airtime and so forth, so.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Yeah, we do need um the support of others and
- 20:10Speaker 2: we're all very thankful when that happens. But, but the
- 20:14Speaker 2: station also um has its own needs, you know, the
- 20:17Speaker 2: station has a number of employees and all kinds of
- 20:22Speaker 2: equipment and things like that. So, um, I think, again, I,
- 20:26Speaker 2: I think the Lord will show you. I know once
- 20:29Speaker 2: in a while for me, I will have that sense like,
- 20:33Speaker 2: you know, I, I wanna give to that. I need
- 20:35Speaker 2: to give to that.
- 20:35Speaker 2: And so, and thankfully today you can do like GoFundMe
- 20:39Speaker 2: and stuff like that, you know, sometimes for me it's
- 20:41Speaker 2: more a person in a crisis, you know, somebody recently
- 20:45Speaker 2: died and the family is
- 20:48Speaker 2: Left and you're, you know, somebody set up a GoFundMe
- 20:51Speaker 2: and you're like, yeah, I want to help out with that.
- 20:53Speaker 2: So
- 20:54Speaker 1: yes, and it's good to be generous, no question about that.
- 20:57Speaker 1: So Julie, thank you for your generous heart and if
- 20:59Speaker 1: anybody does want to donate to KWave, you can just
- 21:01Speaker 1: go to Kwave.com and click on the donate button if
- 21:05Speaker 1: you would like to do that. So thank you for
- 21:07Speaker 1: calling Julie from, uh, San Marino. We're going to go
- 21:10Speaker 1: from San Marino to Riverside and talk to Genevieve. Genevieve,
- 21:13Speaker 1: welcome to the program.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Hi, thank you. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. So my question was,
- 21:24Speaker 1: I was just wondering, like, does it automatically mean you
- 21:28Speaker 1: go to hell if you don't believe in Jesus, like,
- 21:32Speaker 1: even if you weren't, like, even if you grew up
- 21:34Speaker 1: in a place where let's say like Christianity is completely
- 21:37Speaker 1: banned and you don't know.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Anything about Jesus. I was just wondering. So in particular,
- 21:43Speaker 1: you're saying if uh people have never heard the name
- 21:45Speaker 1: of Jesus, is that what you're saying? Or would they
- 21:47Speaker 1: go to hell too? Is that what you're saying, Genevieve?
- 21:50Speaker 1: Yes. OK, that's a great question. OK, um, uh, Phil,
- 21:55Speaker 1: what would you say to Genevieve?
- 21:57Speaker 2: Um, well, I, I would say it's a great question
- 22:00Speaker 2: and um it's a great like, we, we call that
- 22:03Speaker 2: a great like apologetics question. What about those people that
- 22:06Speaker 2: have never heard the gospel, and the Bible does speak
- 22:09Speaker 2: to that though, maybe not in the way that we
- 22:11Speaker 2: would like, maybe it's not as clear as we would
- 22:13Speaker 2: actually like it to be, but we, we, we put
- 22:16Speaker 2: a few things together when we talk about like how
- 22:18Speaker 2: does God deal with people that have never heard the gospel,
- 22:22Speaker 2: never heard of Jesus.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Um, what happens to those people? And so what we
- 22:27Speaker 2: do is we're putting a few things, there's no one
- 22:29Speaker 2: Bible verse that says, this is what happens, but there
- 22:32Speaker 2: are several different, um, angles that we come at from
- 22:35Speaker 2: this to help us. The first one is the most important,
- 22:38Speaker 2: I believe, and that is this, we take into account
- 22:42Speaker 2: the character of God. Who is God?
- 22:45Speaker 2: What does the Bible tell us about God, right? Um,
- 22:48Speaker 2: the Bible certainly makes very clear that like for those
- 22:51Speaker 2: of us, like, there is, there is incredible accountability with
- 22:55Speaker 2: what we do know, right? So like, I know that
- 22:59Speaker 2: Jesus is the way, the truth, the life, and if
- 23:01Speaker 2: I were to reject that, I, I'm accountable to a
- 23:04Speaker 2: level of knowledge that, that I've been given. But what
- 23:07Speaker 2: about those people that have none of that? And so
- 23:10Speaker 2: we start with the character of God. God is so loving,
- 23:13Speaker 2: God is so gracious.
- 23:14Speaker 2: He doesn't wish that anyone would perish, the Bible says.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Here's another angle, the Bible tells us that he will,
- 23:22Speaker 2: he will make himself known for all of us. Like
- 23:25Speaker 2: God is more interested in making himself known to people
- 23:28Speaker 2: than I am in people knowing Jesus. Like I, I'm
- 23:30Speaker 2: pretty passionate about people knowing the gospel, God is more interested,
- 23:35Speaker 2: infinitely more interested, and so that means where he is
- 23:38Speaker 2: not known, um, where
- 23:40Speaker 2: The gospel is not revealed. God is revealing Himself to people.
- 23:44Speaker 2: In fact, there's great books that cover that historically in, in, um,
- 23:48Speaker 2: there's a great book called Eternity in Their Hearts. For
- 23:51Speaker 2: those of you that are readers, it's just a great
- 23:53Speaker 2: book outlining that God has made Himself known in cultures
- 23:57Speaker 2: where he is not known. He still has a way
- 23:59Speaker 2: of making himself known and revealed, and so.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I'm a real big believer that God and, and the
- 24:05Speaker 2: scriptures would point to this, that God will reveal Himself
- 24:08Speaker 2: in ways to help people to know Him, even if
- 24:11Speaker 2: they don't hear the gospel the way you and I
- 24:13Speaker 2: are used to that, and you take into account the,
- 24:15Speaker 2: the nature of God's, you know, being love, he's going
- 24:18Speaker 2: to reveal Himself. He's going to judge the world that
- 24:21Speaker 2: doesn't know Him.
- 24:23Speaker 2: In a way that would make sense. Um, and so
- 24:26Speaker 2: I know that's not the, you know, we all want
- 24:27Speaker 2: an answer that says, here's the Bible verse that'll tell
- 24:29Speaker 2: you exactly what's gonna happen, but the truth of the
- 24:31Speaker 2: matter is that we account for the character of God,
- 24:33Speaker 2: his love for the world that he created, and his, his,
- 24:37Speaker 2: his absolute passion for people to be born again.
- 24:41Speaker 2: And um you put that all together. God is making
- 24:43Speaker 2: Himself known. I love that book Eternity in The Hearts.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I think it's one of the greatest resources we have
- 24:48Speaker 2: looking at that topic.
- 24:50Speaker 1: You know that Don Richardson? Richardson,
- 24:52Speaker 2: Don Richardson, Eternity in The Hearts. And I'll just mention
- 24:55Speaker 2: one last thing and then I'll hand it over to
- 24:56Speaker 2: Brian on this, and that is, gosh, I, I've spent
- 24:59Speaker 2: enough time with, with pastors and, and, and just Christians
- 25:01Speaker 2: who were in the Muslim world who came to faith
- 25:04Speaker 2: because God gave them a dream.
- 25:07Speaker 2: And I'm not talking about books that I've read about that.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I've talked to these, these people who, who have told
- 25:12Speaker 2: me firsthand, looking, I mean, having breakfast with them and
- 25:14Speaker 2: having them look me in the eye and say, God
- 25:16Speaker 2: revealed Himself to me through a dream. That's how I
- 25:19Speaker 2: came to know Jesus. And there's plenty of books that
- 25:22Speaker 2: are on that topic as well. I just wanna give
- 25:24Speaker 2: you full assurance that the, the God that we love,
- 25:27Speaker 2: that we know through scripture is revealing Himself to people
- 25:31Speaker 2: all over the world in dreams, and visions. He's making
- 25:34Speaker 2: Himself known to people.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean, there's not much more to say.
- 25:40Speaker 2: That was fantastic. Um, but I think if you, for
- 25:44Speaker 2: a biblical text that I think just kind of confirms
- 25:49Speaker 2: everything Phil is saying, read Romans chapter one, verse 18 through,
- 25:55Speaker 2: let's say 2024 or so, and then look at Romans
- 26:02Speaker 2: chapter two. And I think, I think what we see
- 26:04Speaker 2: in Romans.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Uh, is that God judges people based on what they know,
- 26:11Speaker 2: not based on what they don't know. And so everybody
- 26:16Speaker 2: has had some
- 26:18Speaker 2: Sort of a revelation of God. That's what Paul is
- 26:21Speaker 2: saying there. Creation itself is is a revelation that there
- 26:24Speaker 2: is a God. And so people respond when you respond
- 26:29Speaker 2: to the revelation you have, then more revelation.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And and I think we, that's what I think the
- 26:39Speaker 2: scriptures are teaching overall and I think that's what experience
- 26:43Speaker 2: is is showing us as well. So I was just
- 26:47Speaker 2: uh last night, Cheryl's reading this book and then she
- 26:51Speaker 2: decided to put it on, you know, kind of the
- 26:53Speaker 2: audio part of it, and I just happened to be
- 26:56Speaker 2: listening and it was a story of this it's amazing
- 27:01Speaker 2: talking about Muslims in the context of Egypt.
- 27:05Speaker 2: And this guy who is an evangelist and he's a,
- 27:10Speaker 2: he's a believer, he's an Egyptian, but he's, um, you know,
- 27:15Speaker 2: very outspoken with his faith. And so one night he's
- 27:18Speaker 2: asleep and all of a sudden he's got a gun
- 27:20Speaker 2: at his head and he thinks, oh no, you know,
- 27:22Speaker 2: this is it. They they caught up with me and
- 27:24Speaker 2: somebody puts a bag over his head and then takes
- 27:26Speaker 2: him on a journey through the city and he thinks
- 27:28Speaker 2: he's being taken to be executed.
- 27:31Speaker 2: And finally he ends up through all of these different
- 27:35Speaker 2: little alleyways and, you know, back entrances and stuff. He
- 27:39Speaker 2: ends up in a mosque and he's surrounded by a
- 27:42Speaker 2: group of imams and the imams are are Muslim, you know, leaders,
- 27:48Speaker 2: but like, you know, the equivalent of a pastor or
- 27:51Speaker 2: theologian or whatever. And he thinks, OK, this is it.
- 27:54Speaker 2: They're gonna, you know, pronounce a condemnation on me and
- 27:57Speaker 2: and I'm going to be dead.
- 27:59Speaker 2: And instead, they one by one said we've had dreams
- 28:04Speaker 2: and Jesus has appeared to us and we know that
- 28:06Speaker 2: he's the truth and we know that you know about Jesus,
- 28:09Speaker 2: so we want you to tell us everything you know
- 28:12Speaker 2: about Jesus. So, so, you know, I think it's like
- 28:17Speaker 2: 10 imams basically are putting their faith in Jesus because
- 28:23Speaker 2: every one of them had a dream.
- 28:26Speaker 2: And it was different, but at the end it was
- 28:29Speaker 2: all Jesus revealing Himself. So, and I think I can
- 28:32Speaker 2: say this on air, um, we have a, we have
- 28:35Speaker 2: imam that came to faith in, um, in an African
- 28:38Speaker 2: country and was a part of one of our churches there.
- 28:41Speaker 2: And he actually the Lord really raised him up and
- 28:44Speaker 2: he actually went back to his home area and he
- 28:46Speaker 2: started a church that operates like a mosque.
- 28:50Speaker 2: And I don't mean the teaching, but the methodology of
- 28:53Speaker 2: like women on one side, the men, and because he's
- 28:56Speaker 2: like a respected leader, and now he's just telling people, Jesus.
- 29:01Speaker 2: It's like, it's wild, man. I love it.
- 29:04Speaker 1: That's so
- 29:04Speaker 1: great. Wow, that's amazing. Genevieve, did that help?
- 29:09Speaker 1: Yes, that helped. All right, well, thank you so much.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Thank you so much for calling Genevieve from Riverside. We
- 29:14Speaker 1: appreciate that great question. If you have a question to
- 29:17Speaker 1: ask Pastor Brian or Pastor Phil, call now 888-564-6173. We're
- 29:23Speaker 1: going to take a break and we'll be back and
- 29:24Speaker 1: we'll talk to Robert and Pamela and you. So give
- 29:28Speaker 1: us a call 888-564-6173. We'll see you in a few minutes.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Welcome back to the second half of Pastor's Perspective. I'm
- 30:18Speaker 1: Michael David in for Brian Perez. On today's program, we
- 30:21Speaker 1: have Brian Bruderson and Phil Metzger, and, uh, Brian, you
- 30:26Speaker 1: wanted to say something.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Well, I did want to say something, but Phil's gone missing. He's, um,
- 30:31Speaker 2: either the rapture happened and Phil was the only one
- 30:35Speaker 2: that went, because we're still here, or
- 30:40Speaker 2: Uh, feel, his calculation is off and he's, um, or
- 30:45Speaker 2: maybe he's lost in his church building somewhere. I don't know.
- 30:48Speaker 1: But sometimes if he's at his church building, somebody can
- 30:51Speaker 1: snag you and have to tell you, tell pour their
- 30:53Speaker 1: life story to you and then you say, I've got
- 30:56Speaker 1: to get back over there.
- 30:57Speaker 2: That could, that could be happening. So yeah, so we'll
- 31:00Speaker 2: wait till he comes back and um.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Oh, there he is. Look at him. He finally
- 31:07Speaker 1: made it.
- 31:08Speaker 2: All right, we were a little concerned that the rapture
- 31:10Speaker 2: had taken place and Michael and I missed it, but, um,
- 31:13Speaker 2: thankfully we didn't. And so, um, but I wanted to
- 31:19Speaker 2: mention Phil.
- 31:21Speaker 2: That you are a grandfather once again.
- 31:27Speaker 2: I am, yes, grandbaby number 6, if you can believe it.
- 31:31Speaker 2: That is great. Congratulations. Now is that Judith's baby? Yes,
- 31:35Speaker 2: it's his 2nd. So my 3, my 3 oldest are, um,
- 31:39Speaker 2: 3 of my 4. My 3 oldest are married and
- 31:42Speaker 2: each have 2 kids now. So wow.
- 31:45Speaker 2: That is great. Yeah, man. I saw you. I saw
- 31:48Speaker 2: you holding the little, is it a boy? It's a
- 31:51Speaker 2: little girl. So, yeah, a little girl. Her name is Jayden, and, um,
- 31:55Speaker 2: she is, yeah, she's, um.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Her, she's got an older sister that's a year and
- 32:00Speaker 2: a half years, so they're really close together, and, uh,
- 32:04Speaker 2: that little sister's name is Alma and she's not happy.
- 32:07Speaker 2: She calls me Papa, and every time I hold the baby,
- 32:09Speaker 2: she says, no, Papa, no. Isn't it amazing how young
- 32:15Speaker 2: they get so possessive? It's true. And like, and she's the,
- 32:20Speaker 2: she was the youngest until this one came, and so
- 32:22Speaker 2: she doesn't realize she knocked a whole bunch of other
- 32:24Speaker 2: people out of that spot.
- 32:28Speaker 2: So yeah, we're, we're, we're really happy. Yeah, Judah leads
- 32:31Speaker 2: our kids' ministry here at the church, but he, yeah,
- 32:34Speaker 2: a dad of two little girls, he's a girl dad,
- 32:36Speaker 2: all girl dad. That's great.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Now, since you guys have both been fathers and grandfathers,
- 32:41Speaker 1: what is the tip on, uh, when a baby replaces
- 32:45Speaker 1: the older child and they don't want you to give
- 32:47Speaker 1: attention to the younger child? What, what advice
- 32:49Speaker 1: do you give the
- 32:50Speaker 2: grandfathers that I, that almost always happens. I mean, you know,
- 32:54Speaker 2: maybe there's a few.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Situations where it doesn't happen, but you know, because in,
- 33:00Speaker 2: in like, like as Phil is saying, you know that.
- 33:03Speaker 2: That child has been sort of the focus of everybody's
- 33:06Speaker 2: attention and then all of a sudden, wait a second,
- 33:09Speaker 2: you know, so, um, yeah, we, our youngest is 16
- 33:15Speaker 2: months now and she's, and she has a 6 year
- 33:18Speaker 2: old brother and he, he's pretty good, you know, he,
- 33:22Speaker 2: it's funny because he's never really been, maybe because he's
- 33:25Speaker 2: a little bit older, so he's never been that.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Like, hey, wait, you know, give me attention because he's
- 33:31Speaker 2: kind of self-sufficient anyway, but um, yeah, but you know,
- 33:35Speaker 2: the grandpa thing is just amazing and Lila has become
- 33:40Speaker 2: just such a delight, you know, for, for me. So I,
- 33:44Speaker 2: you know, I was with her for the past few
- 33:46Speaker 2: months and then, um, getting home, I have to FaceTime
- 33:50Speaker 2: her because uh she, she wants to see Grandpa and
- 33:55Speaker 2: grandpa wants to see her. So yeah, it's very good.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So special. I can't believe she's 16 months old already.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Thank goodness, crazy, yeah, and she's a riot, and she
- 34:05Speaker 2: is absolutely hilarious.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Uh, there's nothing. Grandparenting is the best parenting of all.
- 34:12Speaker 2: It's
- 34:12Speaker 1: amazing, yeah.
- 34:15Speaker 1: All right. Well, 888-564-6173 is the number to call and
- 34:20Speaker 1: as promised, we're going to go to Robert in Hemet. Robert,
- 34:23Speaker 1: welcome to the program.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Hey, glad to be here. Uh, I have called before, but, uh,
- 34:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Pastor Phil and Pastor Brian, I listened to both
- 34:36Speaker 1: of you guys, uh, otherwise, other modes and really enjoy, uh,
- 34:42Speaker 1: your commentary on the Bible and your insight. So you're
- 34:46Speaker 1: so down to earth and uplifting. And,
- 34:49Speaker 2: uh,
- 34:50Speaker 1: anyway,
- 34:50Speaker 2: my question is, thank you,
- 34:51Speaker 1: Robert.
- 34:54Speaker 1: You're welcome. Uh, my question is about, uh, the, uh,
- 35:00Speaker 1: Between David and Goliath, the old classic, uh, story that,
- 35:05Speaker 1: you know, I've heard since I was, you know, just
- 35:06Speaker 1: a toddler myself, but I heard a commentary, uh, last
- 35:09Speaker 1: night from, uh, the Bible best man J. Vernon McGee,
- 35:15Speaker 2: and
- 35:15Speaker 1: he was
- 35:15Speaker 2: talking about,
- 35:16Speaker 1: uh,
- 35:17Speaker 2: how,
- 35:18Speaker 1: uh, Goliath had
- 35:19Speaker 2: 4
- 35:20Speaker 1: brothers, and, you know, I'm,
- 35:21Speaker 2: I'm getting this vision in my head that
- 35:23Speaker 2: You know, you're not just seeing Goliath in the army
- 35:26Speaker 2: there in front of him, but these 4 giant brothers also, uh, but, uh,
- 35:32Speaker 2: it also says, uh,
- 35:34Speaker 2: That he, he also mentioned that, uh, he picked up
- 35:37Speaker 2: 5 smooth stones from the brook. Like, uh, maybe he
- 35:43Speaker 2: was gonna go after, you know, the brothers too. Uh,
- 35:47Speaker 2: I was wondering what, what do you think about that?
- 35:49Speaker 2: I mean, talk about brave, man, he's not only going
- 35:52Speaker 2: after Goliath, but he's thinking about going after these big
- 35:54Speaker 2: brothers too.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Well, that does very much and and I've heard, I've
- 36:00Speaker 2: heard people say that before. And you know, it's a
- 36:02Speaker 2: little bit tongue in cheek, I think, and from uh
- 36:05Speaker 2: Jay Vernon, it would, it would be that definitely. Um,
- 36:09Speaker 2: Goliath did have brothers though, and we do know from
- 36:12Speaker 2: later on in the scriptures that um in future battles,
- 36:16Speaker 2: Goliath's brothers were engaged and uh it it makes a
- 36:20Speaker 2: point to say that um all of the
- 36:24Speaker 2: Relatives, some say it's brothers, some say it's sons of
- 36:28Speaker 2: the giant fell by the hand of David indirectly because
- 36:32Speaker 2: they fell through David's men. Now, um, I don't think
- 36:37Speaker 2: they were all necessarily.
- 36:41Speaker 2: You know, backing Goliath as he was coming out, and
- 36:44Speaker 2: David's like, oh, wait a second, there's. Yeah. Oh, there's
- 36:48Speaker 2: 5 of them. Let me grab 5 stones. Uh, you know,
- 36:51Speaker 2: David is, I mean, the sling was his weapon. And
- 36:55Speaker 2: so he's gonna just have, he's gonna have enough ammo. He,
- 36:59Speaker 2: David doesn't, I, I, I mean, he doesn't have any
- 37:01Speaker 2: guarantee that the first stone is gonna do what it did.
- 37:04Speaker 2: But that's what it did because, of course, God was directing.
- 37:08Speaker 2: David. So I think it was just really practically speaking,
- 37:11Speaker 2: it was just preparation for a battle that could have
- 37:15Speaker 2: taken 1 stone, and could have taken 5.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I would add, yeah, I, I totally agree. I think it's,
- 37:21Speaker 2: it's prudence. This, I, I, and I've heard this, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 2: taught my whole life, my Christian life was this like,
- 37:28Speaker 2: you know, it doesn't matter what direction David threw that
- 37:30Speaker 2: stone in, it was gonna kill Goliath. And, um, that's
- 37:34Speaker 2: not true. That's just not true. Like, um, God brought
- 37:40Speaker 2: Goliath down through a man who was a really faithful,
- 37:44Speaker 2: faithful tool.
- 37:46Speaker 2: And so, like, uh, you know, David was really good
- 37:48Speaker 2: at what he did and it's like, it's like anything, man,
- 37:50Speaker 2: if you're gonna go into battle, go prepared, right? Like,
- 37:53Speaker 2: don't grab one stone when you could grab 5. Why
- 37:55Speaker 2: would you do that? Like, there's no,
- 37:58Speaker 2: You know, and we, we also assume that like the
- 38:00Speaker 2: whole army, the Philistine army, like, just like.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Stopped fighting the second that Goliath died, but the truth is,
- 38:08Speaker 2: that would have incited a total battle, like a raging battle.
- 38:11Speaker 2: And so for David to be prepared for, it's not
- 38:14Speaker 2: just about killing Goliath, but others are gonna be, you know,
- 38:16Speaker 2: not Goliath's brothers, but he has no other weapon, right?
- 38:20Speaker 2: So he's, he's just, you just gotta be prudent. God
- 38:23Speaker 2: was faithful, but David was prudent.
- 38:25Speaker 1: All right, um, Robert, did that answer your question?
- 38:30Speaker 1: Yes, very insightful. Thank you. All right, thank you, Robert,
- 38:33Speaker 1: for calling us at 888-564-6173 from Hemet. We're going to
- 38:38Speaker 1: go from Hemet to uh Menefee and talk to Pamela. Pamela,
- 38:42Speaker 1: welcome to the program.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Thank you for taking my, my
- 38:47Speaker 1: call and my question. I hope I can, um, get
- 38:50Speaker 1: my question now because I get so nervous. So I'm sorry, uh,
- 38:54Speaker 1: Pastor Brian and Pastor Phil, but my voice will be shaky, but, um,
- 38:58Speaker 1: I'm very strong and, um, my belief. My question is,
- 39:04Speaker 1: we are studying, um, now in my Bible study, we're studying, uh,
- 39:09Speaker 1: the book of Mark.
- 39:11Speaker 1: And a market says that um Jesus sort of just
- 39:15Speaker 1: got up one day in Nazareth and walked over to
- 39:18Speaker 1: um uh the Jordan and John the Baptist was there
- 39:22Speaker 1: because it was prophesized uh many years before and he
- 39:26Speaker 1: gets back.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Baptized. My question is, that was um sort of shared
- 39:31Speaker 1: uh thought in our Bible study was Jesus didn't know
- 39:36Speaker 1: that he was the Son of God and when when
- 39:40Speaker 1: God speaks to him out of heaven, that's when he
- 39:43Speaker 1: got the Holy Spirit. He came down, that's when he
- 39:46Speaker 1: had the Spirit, but before that, he didn't have the Spirit.
- 39:51Speaker 1: And I disagree with that, but I don't have the
- 39:55Speaker 1: scriptures to back that up. That's what I'm hoping you
- 39:59Speaker 1: can help me.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Right, um.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that's.
- 40:06Speaker 2: That's, that's, that's a great question, Pamela, and uh, you're
- 40:10Speaker 2: doing very well asking that question. So don't worry about
- 40:14Speaker 2: being a little bit nervous because you're coming across loud
- 40:17Speaker 2: and clear and it's, it's great that you're calling. Thank you. Um.
- 40:22Speaker 2: So remember Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit. So
- 40:27Speaker 2: to say that Jesus didn't have the Holy Spirit before
- 40:31Speaker 2: his baptism would be a mistake. Um, he's filled with
- 40:35Speaker 2: the Spirit from the, the moment, you know, of his conception, really.
- 40:40Speaker 2: And the Gospel of Matthew makes that clear. The Gospel
- 40:44Speaker 2: of Luke makes that clear, that which is born.
- 40:47Speaker 2: The angel says to Mary, that which is born of
- 40:49Speaker 2: you shall be called the Son of the Most High,
- 40:54Speaker 2: and you will conceive and, you know, bear a child.
- 40:59Speaker 2: This Holy Spirit will come upon you. And so we
- 41:02Speaker 2: have that there. What happens at the baptism of Jesus
- 41:06Speaker 2: is the Spirit comes upon Him now in an empowering
- 41:11Speaker 2: way for the
- 41:12Speaker 2: For the fulfillment of the mission that God has sent
- 41:15Speaker 2: him on, because remember, it was at the baptism of
- 41:17Speaker 2: Jesus that he really did enter now into the mission.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Up to that point, he's living in obscurity. Um, only
- 41:25Speaker 2: Mary and a few, maybe a few people would even
- 41:29Speaker 2: know about his past and the, you know, the miraculous
- 41:34Speaker 2: things surrounding his birth and so forth. So, um, Jesus,
- 41:39Speaker 2: when he arrives on the scene,
- 41:41Speaker 2: And and God had told John.
- 41:45Speaker 2: That the one on whom the Spirit descends and remains,
- 41:48Speaker 2: he is the Messiah. So Jesus, the Spirit came upon
- 41:54Speaker 2: him partially as a, as a sign for John to
- 42:00Speaker 2: know that the Messiah had indeed come, and he was
- 42:04Speaker 2: now entering his ministry. So the, the, the baptism of
- 42:09Speaker 2: Jesus by John, which then included the Spirit descending upon him.
- 42:14Speaker 2: That was the empowerment for the ministry that he was
- 42:17Speaker 2: now to embark on over the next 3+ years.
- 42:21Speaker 1: All right, Phil, did you want to say anything?
- 42:23Speaker 2: I, I, I just throw a verse into there as well.
- 42:26Speaker 2: John chapter 3, I love this verse, verse 34, for
- 42:29Speaker 2: he whom God sent, he's speaking about the Son Himself,
- 42:33Speaker 2: speaks the words of God, for God does not give
- 42:35Speaker 2: the Spirit by measure. In other words, the Son has
- 42:38Speaker 2: the Spirit in full measure, um, not contingent upon his
- 42:44Speaker 2: baptism at all. This is, he has the Spirit, like Brian,
- 42:48Speaker 2: like Pastor Brian said.
- 42:49Speaker 2: He always has the spirit. He is God the Son.
- 42:52Speaker 2: He's never without the Spirit. And like you're saying, Phil,
- 42:55Speaker 2: that the idea there is that everyone before and after
- 43:01Speaker 2: would have the Spirit by measure. So, you know, we,
- 43:05Speaker 2: the old, the Old Testament prophets had the Spirit, but
- 43:08Speaker 2: it was not the fullness of the totality of the Spirit.
- 43:12Speaker 2: But Jesus, he has a spirit without measure. So he
- 43:15Speaker 2: has the fullness of the Spirit.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Does that help, Pamela?
- 43:19Speaker 1: Let me bring her back on. Pamela, does that help?
- 43:22Speaker 1: It does. Thank you. Do you think, I, I can't
- 43:26Speaker 1: imagine because he's God, but do you think Jesus was
- 43:30Speaker 1: surprised by me, me, I'm the one called? Or do
- 43:33Speaker 1: you think he knew? And, and it just confirmed mostly
- 43:38Speaker 1: to others, maybe not even to himself, like he already
- 43:42Speaker 2: knew. Yeah, well, remember when Jesus was a boy, when
- 43:47Speaker 2: he was 12 years old, he went.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Uh, with his family up to Jerusalem for the feast,
- 43:54Speaker 2: and then as they were leaving, remember he stayed behind
- 43:57Speaker 2: and they were worried about him, they were concerned because
- 44:00Speaker 2: a couple of days passed and they couldn't find him.
- 44:02Speaker 2: And when they found him, they found him in the
- 44:04Speaker 2: temple speaking with the doctors and the, you know, the
- 44:09Speaker 2: rabbis and and all of that.
- 44:11Speaker 2: And remember the the words of Mary to him, you know,
- 44:15Speaker 2: speaking to him, you know, your father and I were
- 44:19Speaker 2: so concerned about you. What, where have you been? Why,
- 44:22Speaker 2: why did you do this? And he said, Didn't you
- 44:25Speaker 2: know that I should be about my father's business? Jesus
- 44:29Speaker 2: knew at 12 years old that he was God's, you know,
- 44:34Speaker 2: the one God sent into the world.
- 44:37Speaker 1: His son.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Oh, thank you. I, I couldn't imagine, uh, Jesus not knowing,
- 44:46Speaker 1: and it just, I, I, I'm just so thankful.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I mean, you know,
- 44:52Speaker 1: Savior.
- 44:52Speaker 2: So yes,
- 44:53Speaker 1: thank you for answering my question.
- 44:55Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 44:56Speaker 1: All right, and Pamela, you did a wonderful job from
- 44:58Speaker 1: Menefee on, uh, that question on the air. You did great.
- 45:02Speaker 1: You know,
- 45:02Speaker 2: Phil, I don't know, you, you've probably read some different
- 45:06Speaker 2: authors too, but I, I've read.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Guys who
- 45:10Speaker 2: Uh, you know, they, I, I mean, I think you have,
- 45:13Speaker 2: you have.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Two mistakes in
- 45:18Speaker 2: A perspective on Jesus. Sometimes we so focus on his
- 45:23Speaker 2: divinity that we lose sight of his humanity and we
- 45:27Speaker 2: forget that Jesus is a human being like like we are,
- 45:30Speaker 2: except without sin. But then the other side of it
- 45:33Speaker 2: is you so emphasize his humanity.
- 45:37Speaker 2: That and not, not denying his divinity, but emphasize I
- 45:42Speaker 2: think some have overemphasized his humanity. I've I've read authors
- 45:45Speaker 2: who said that Jesus probably felt that he was having
- 45:50Speaker 2: a mental breakdown at times, that he was kind of
- 45:53Speaker 2: going through like a schizophrenia because of this emergence of
- 45:57Speaker 2: the Gods, you know, the, the divinity within him and stuff.
- 46:01Speaker 2: And I'm just like, I, I don't think so. You know, so.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Yeah, we, we just have to be careful and not
- 46:12Speaker 2: go either direction too far. It's almost like it's so
- 46:16Speaker 2: hard to not too, right? It's like, so we're trying
- 46:18Speaker 2: to be balanced, but you realize it's, man, that's a
- 46:21Speaker 2: tough one. But you're right, I've, I, I've read that too,
- 46:23Speaker 2: where you have people that are too extreme on either side,
- 46:26Speaker 2: and it's like, yeah, but you're missing is humanity, or wait,
- 46:29Speaker 2: you're missing is divinity. And, uh, yeah.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Boy, heaven is gonna be quite the place when we
- 46:35Speaker 2: just grasp it all in its fullness. It's gonna be incredible.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Wow.
- 46:40Speaker 1: I think we've got another deep question from, uh, Hannah
- 46:43Speaker 1: from Newport Beach. Hannah, go ahead. You're on Pastor's perspective.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Hi, um, yes, my question is I've decided to read
- 46:52Speaker 1: the Bible cover to cover, um, and so thank you.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I'm in Judges now, but one of the very first
- 47:00Speaker 1: things that I came across that I didn't know how
- 47:03Speaker 1: to feel about was Genesis 6:6, which says, um, the
- 47:08Speaker 1: Lord regretted that He made human beings on the earth
- 47:11Speaker 1: and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said,
- 47:14Speaker 1: I will.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Wipe them away and you know he regrets that he
- 47:18Speaker 1: made them and I'm struggling with the word regret because
- 47:22Speaker 1: at least in today's definition of regret, it's something that
- 47:26Speaker 1: you didn't see coming or a decision that you made
- 47:29Speaker 1: that was like potentially a mistake and through reading the Bible,
- 47:35Speaker 1: obviously I'm getting a sense of God's personality, which is
- 47:38Speaker 1: really fun, but this has stumped me. I've looked at other.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Um, translations, and the only other translation that I've seen
- 47:48Speaker 1: was repented, and that's like very similar. So I just
- 47:52Speaker 1: didn't know how to feel about the word regret and
- 47:55Speaker 1: like can God regret something and does he make mistakes
- 47:59Speaker 1: and I don't believe that he does, but I just
- 48:02Speaker 1: didn't know how to feel about that and maybe you
- 48:03Speaker 1: guys had more of a perspective of what that means.
- 48:06Speaker 1: All right, Phil, what would you say?
- 48:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Hannah, great question. Um, two things I want to
- 48:11Speaker 2: mention on this. The first one is the word regret,
- 48:16Speaker 2: like we, it means something to us that it doesn't
- 48:19Speaker 2: mean when it's being used towards God. So the word
- 48:22Speaker 2: regret here for in Genesis 6 is more the idea
- 48:26Speaker 2: of like sorrow.
- 48:27Speaker 2: And it's not sorrow as in um like like um
- 48:32Speaker 2: I made a mistake and now I need to fix
- 48:34Speaker 2: that mistake. It's just purely sorrow, profound disappointment. God is disappointed.
- 48:39Speaker 2: He is, he is sad at the state of humanity.
- 48:44Speaker 2: That's the same word in Hebrew that we would use
- 48:46Speaker 2: for sorrow. They would use, they use the word regret.
- 48:49Speaker 2: So that's the first point. The second point is connected
- 48:51Speaker 2: to that. The Bible.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Uses what we call, I think it's called anthropomorphisms, which
- 48:56Speaker 2: is the idea, and this is pretty common in scripture,
- 49:00Speaker 2: where it's using human words to help us understand God.
- 49:05Speaker 2: And this is one of those moments where, um, you know,
- 49:10Speaker 2: God is genuinely emotional about the concept of like, I'm
- 49:12Speaker 2: sorrowful for what's happening, what's happened in humanity, but we
- 49:16Speaker 2: use the word regret differently than the way God uses
- 49:19Speaker 2: that word. So, it's used to help us to understand,
- 49:22Speaker 2: but it's not in the same way that we do
- 49:25Speaker 2: understand it, if that makes sense. So, those two things,
- 49:27Speaker 2: when the Bible uses the word regret for God, it's
- 49:30Speaker 2: the word, it's the idea of sorrow, he's sad about it,
- 49:33Speaker 2: and it's used that way because it helps.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Us humans understand what that must have felt like for God.
- 49:42Speaker 1: All right, Hannah, how about, how did that help you?
- 49:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and then just to kind of round it out,
- 49:48Speaker 1: do you think that
- 49:51Speaker 1: He
- 49:53Speaker 1: Didn't see it coming.
- 49:56Speaker 2: Yeah, he saw it coming, but I think the reality
- 49:59Speaker 2: of the, you know, the manifestation of it.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Of course God sees everything coming because he knows everything,
- 50:07Speaker 2: but as it's playing itself out in real time and
- 50:11Speaker 2: all of the, you know, tragedy of it, it, it's uh.
- 50:17Speaker 2: You know, it's, it's impacting God in this emotional way. And,
- 50:21Speaker 2: and like Phil said, the word, the word literally means
- 50:24Speaker 2: to be sorry. That's the actual, that's the literal rendering
- 50:27Speaker 2: of the word. Regret is a
- 50:31Speaker 2: It's a translation that's allowable, uh, but you could argue
- 50:35Speaker 2: whether it's the best translation. Maybe it would have just
- 50:38Speaker 2: been better to just put it in English to be sorry.
- 50:42Speaker 1: All right,
- 50:43Speaker 2: does that help very much?
- 50:44Speaker 1: Yes, it does. I appreciate it. Thank you.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Great. Yeah, thanks for calling and it's a great question.
- 50:49Speaker 2: So glad you're thinking about this stuff.
- 50:51Speaker 1: That's
- 50:51Speaker 2: awesome.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Absolutely. Thank you, Hannah from Newport Beach, uh, calling at
- 50:55Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 from Newport Beach to Hemmett we go and talk
- 51:01Speaker 1: to Lemay. Lemay, welcome to the program.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate your call, um, taking this. Um,
- 51:08Speaker 1: my question is, I've been tithing since I was a
- 51:11Speaker 1: teenager on everything, and now I'm 83 and on Social Security, uh,
- 51:17Speaker 1: and tithing on it, but haven't I already tithed on
- 51:19Speaker 1: it once?
- 51:21Speaker 1: That's a good question because it is money she's already
- 51:24Speaker 1: tithed on. So, uh, we're going to go to Pastor Brian.
- 51:27Speaker 1: What do you say? What do you say to Lemay?
- 51:29Speaker 2: Um, yeah, you have, you've tithed on it already. So
- 51:32Speaker 2: I don't know that you need to do a double,
- 51:35Speaker 2: a double tithe. But Lemay, what I would say too
- 51:38Speaker 2: is that tithing, uh, and then people will consider this controversial, um.
- 51:46Speaker 2: I, I don't believe that the New Testament requires tithing. Now,
- 51:50Speaker 2: tithe means 1/10th, and I think it's fine to give 10th.
- 51:54Speaker 2: I think in some cases we should give more than 1/10.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Some people don't, you know, can give less than 1/10. Um,
- 52:01Speaker 2: tithing is an Old Testament principle. We find it, um,
- 52:05Speaker 2: in the Gospels because the gospels are still set historically
- 52:09Speaker 2: really in an Old Testament kind of mode of things. Um,
- 52:13Speaker 2: but when we come to the letters,
- 52:16Speaker 2: To the churches written by the apostles, whether it's Paul
- 52:19Speaker 2: or Peter or John or whoever it might be. Um,
- 52:23Speaker 2: there's never any instruction on tithing.
- 52:26Speaker 2: There is instruction on giving, and probably the best place
- 52:30Speaker 2: to find that is 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9,
- 52:33Speaker 2: where Paul talks pretty extensively about giving and he, he
- 52:36Speaker 2: kind of lays down these principles. Uh, and one of
- 52:39Speaker 2: the principles is let each person give whatever they determine
- 52:42Speaker 2: in their own heart. So it starts with you making
- 52:45Speaker 2: the determination on the amount you're going to give, and
- 52:48Speaker 2: then make sure you, you give it joyfully. And then
- 52:53Speaker 2: he reminds us, you know,
- 52:55Speaker 2: Remember, God appreciates generosity. And so, but the idea that
- 53:01Speaker 2: there is a strict, every Christian must give 10%, I
- 53:05Speaker 2: don't think that you can build a case from the
- 53:07Speaker 2: New Testament for that. Now, if you want to pull
- 53:09Speaker 2: from the Old Testament, which many people do, uh, that's how,
- 53:13Speaker 2: you know, they come up dogmatically with that. So, I
- 53:16Speaker 2: think just giving is something that we always wanna do
- 53:19Speaker 2: because you can't outgive God. God is the giver.
- 53:23Speaker 2: And I, you know, never wanna be stingy when it
- 53:26Speaker 2: comes to giving to God because I know that, um,
- 53:31Speaker 2: God's given me so much. So, but thinking about like
- 53:34Speaker 2: I have to be very precise here and I've gotta
- 53:37Speaker 2: make sure that I get my 10%, I don't think
- 53:40Speaker 2: that's something that you need to uh
- 53:43Speaker 2: be concerned about.
- 53:45Speaker 1: All right, Phil, did you want to do something?
- 53:47Speaker 2: Just, thank you for your faithfulness for so many years.
- 53:51Speaker 2: That's really, really, really beautiful and amazing, and I just
- 53:55Speaker 2: wholeheartedly agree with what Pastor Brian said. I don't think
- 53:59Speaker 2: there's any, there's never been a hard and fast rule.
- 54:02Speaker 2: It's always been about what's God doing in our hearts,
- 54:05Speaker 2: and you've lived a life of incredible generosity. I would say, um,
- 54:09Speaker 2: finish well, but that doesn't mean you have to be tithing,
- 54:12Speaker 2: just finish well with the kind of person you've already
- 54:14Speaker 2: been and let God just keep showing you what that
- 54:17Speaker 2: looks like.
- 54:18Speaker 2: Keep the money if you're supposed to keep the money.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Let's do whatever you're supposed to do.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Lemay, what do you say?
- 54:25Speaker 1: Let me, what do you say to that? No, I
- 54:28Speaker 1: appreciate that, um, because I just always had that question
- 54:31Speaker 1: mark in my brain, and it finally, I don't know,
- 54:35Speaker 1: I thought, I heard the tithing me mark earlier, bless
- 54:38Speaker 1: that little lady.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Um, and I thought, you know, I gotta ask this sometimes,
- 54:43Speaker 1: and so I was just curious.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Well,
- 54:46Speaker 1: but no, I love the Lord. I'm not gonna rob God,
- 54:48Speaker 1: and I want to be generous, but still, Social Security
- 54:53Speaker 1: isn't a whole lot to live on. OK, thank you, folks.
- 54:57Speaker 2: All right,
- 54:58Speaker 1: thanks for calling. Thank you for calling. We really appreciate it.
- 55:00Speaker 2: You know, it's funny that, you know, because I've talked
- 55:01Speaker 2: to many people so many times like, am I supposed
- 55:03Speaker 2: to tithe on my net or my gross, and people,
- 55:06Speaker 2: people get all
- 55:08Speaker 2: You know, just stressed out about it. And it's like,
- 55:10Speaker 2: you know, God, God's not stressing out about that. Just
- 55:13Speaker 2: give and give generously and trust God, you know, it'll
- 55:17Speaker 2: be OK.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely. Well, Lemay from Hemmett, thank you for calling
- 55:21Speaker 1: us on Pastor's Perspective today. Uh, some of you are
- 55:24Speaker 1: on hold. If you're on hold right now, you get
- 55:27Speaker 1: a pass for tomorrow. You can talk to Brian Perez and, uh,
- 55:30Speaker 1: the pastors and get your questions answered. We do appreciate
- 55:33Speaker 1: you calling. Um, I'm, uh, Michael David in for Brian Perez,
- 55:38Speaker 1: for Pastor Brian Broderson and Pastor Phil Metzger. Thank you
- 55:41Speaker 1: for joining us today, and we will see you next
- 55:43Speaker 1: time on Pastor's Perspective. Bye-bye.
