- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:31Amen. Second Timothy chapter 2.
- 0:37Last week we covered chapter 1 and the heading of that teaching
- 0:42was Stir up the gift of God, which is in you.
- 0:47We talked about the the great need to have the Holy Spirit
- 0:52just saturating our lives, being filled with the Holy Spirit,
- 0:57stirring up the gift of God that he gives to us as believers.
- 1:03Some difficult things. This is Paul's last letter to
- 1:07Timothy. He is in the Mamertine prison
- 1:10there in the city of Rome, in the lower part of the prison.
- 1:16And he knows that his time is short and that he will end up
- 1:21being executed, taken outside the city and beheaded.
- 1:27So what would you say if you this was your last letter?
- 1:30What, what kinds of things would you tell someone if it's your
- 1:34last letter? But when you read through Second
- 1:38Timothy in these 4 chapters, you don't hear him moaning.
- 1:44You don't hear him saying, this is such a bummer.
- 1:47You know, I'm so miserable. What's these crummy Romans?
- 1:51I mean, he doesn't go into that, at least not in the Greek, but
- 1:57he's focused because he wants to lay out to Timothy these last
- 2:05important 27 commands. Last week we talked about the
- 2:111st 5 commands that were in Chapter 1 and then as we go
- 2:15through Chapter 2, I want you to see if you can pick out the
- 2:19commands that Paul gives Timothy.
- 2:23I've entitled chapter 2, Endure hardship as a good soldier of
- 2:29Jesus Christ. It's hard for us to really
- 2:34picture what it was like living in the Roman Empire at this time
- 2:40as a believer. Paul is now incarcerated for his
- 2:46faith, and there are others that are have been incarcerated for
- 2:50their faith and they become Public Enemy number one, you
- 2:54might say. And so with that pressure,
- 2:59knowing that there's a target on your back and yet you're still
- 3:02trying to share Christ with people and things are very
- 3:06dangerous, it's easy to want to pull back and hide and just not
- 3:12put yourself out there. But Timothy's in a place of
- 3:16leadership. He's in a place as a Bishop, you
- 3:20might say, over these house churches there in the city of
- 3:24Ephesus. And so Paul is strongly
- 3:29encouraging Timothy to endure hardship.
- 3:34It's yes, I know it's going to be hard.
- 3:36It's hard for me right now and in prison, because he talks
- 3:39about it even as at the end of Chapter 1, he says everybody
- 3:45took off, everybody forsook me. Only Luke is with me.
- 3:50You read at the end of the book, and yet he's going to finish
- 3:55well. He's going to press on, finish
- 3:58well. He says.
- 3:59My life is like being poured out, like a drink offering.
- 4:03But I know where I'm going, and I know who saved me, and I know
- 4:07what he's done for me. And as long as Paul kept that in
- 4:10front of him, it was all worth it.
- 4:13And I tell you, once you lose sight of the great sacrifice
- 4:17that Jesus made for us to bring us reconciled back to the
- 4:22Father, you start losing sight of that.
- 4:25And all of a sudden you go, why am I doing this?
- 4:27What's this all about anyway? Pretty soon you start
- 4:30questioning the whole rules of the Kingdom because you've lost
- 4:33the plot. Jesus is the main thing and you
- 4:38see him going back to that as you as we cover these chapters.
- 4:44So I'm going to take chapter 2 tonight and I want to split it
- 4:47up into two parts. Those of you that are taking
- 4:49notes, you can just heading number one is called endure
- 4:54hardship. Very simple.
- 4:56And that's the first 13 verses Endure hardship.
- 5:00The second section I call erring believers must be stopped.
- 5:06Erring believers must be stopped.
- 5:08That's verse 14 to verse 26. And there's so much going on in
- 5:14chapter 2. Rather than reading all 13
- 5:17verses in the first part, I'm going to break it down a little
- 5:20better. And so the first thing I want to
- 5:25talk about is Paul coming to Timothy in verses one and two
- 5:31and saying to him be strong in the grace that's in Christ
- 5:35Jesus. A couple of years ago I did an
- 5:40in depth study on this section and you can go on to the church
- 5:44website and find that study to go and do a deep dive into it.
- 5:48But I just want to reiterate some things here that are super
- 5:52important, super important for us today.
- 5:56He says in verses one and two, you therefore, my Son, be strong
- 6:02in the grace that is in Christ Jesus and the things that you
- 6:07have heard from me among many witnesses commit these to
- 6:12faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
- 6:18So as you're reading through the word and you as when we always
- 6:21talk about this, as you come to the Word, therefore you've got
- 6:25to think about what's the foundation for what he's about
- 6:29to say and that's the previous verses.
- 6:32So therefore, based on these principles, based on the fact
- 6:36that you're not to be ashamed of the gospel, you're to share with
- 6:40me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of
- 6:44God, Paul says I am not ashamed for I know whom I have believed
- 6:50and I'm persuaded that he's able to keep what I've committed to
- 6:55him until that day. So Timothy, you therefore, my
- 7:02son Paul didn't have any physical children, but he had a
- 7:11couple of really strong spiritual sons.
- 7:14Titus was one. Timothy was even closer than
- 7:19Titus. You therefore, my son, be strong
- 7:26in the grace that's in Christ Jesus.
- 7:32And you know that word be strong is, is in the present imperative
- 7:37in the Greek and and that Greek form is a command to do
- 7:43something in the future which involves continuous or repeated
- 7:47action. It's not a one time be strong
- 7:51once. No, it's continually be strong
- 7:56in the grace that's in Christ Jesus.
- 7:59Grace is the favor of God. Continually go back to God for
- 8:04that grace because that's where you get your strength to endure
- 8:10because you just can't do. You can't do it on your own.
- 8:16You need the grace from heaven to get through this.
- 8:19Timothy, these are rough days. These are difficult days.
- 8:23These are dangerous days. Be strong, be continuously
- 8:30strong in the grace that's in Christ Jesus or you're not going
- 8:34to make it. It's going to be difficult.
- 8:38I think verse one out of chapter 2 is the key for the whole
- 8:42chapter because if you're not going to go to the Lord for your
- 8:46strength to draw upon His grace, you're on your own.
- 8:50You can do what you want, and you're going to experience
- 8:53failure after failure, hopelessness after hopelessness
- 8:57in the world in which we live. And then you come to His first
- 9:04command here after being strong. He says the things that you've
- 9:08heard from me among many witnesses, 15 years worth.
- 9:14Commit these to faithful man who will be able to teach others.
- 9:20This is discipleship. It's where you pass it along.
- 9:24And since being here, I mean, we moved from England 6 1/2 years
- 9:28ago and you know, I've learned so much being here under Pastor
- 9:33Ed. And one of the things he taught
- 9:35me is, is just this five point of discipleship.
- 9:41And maybe you've heard it, maybe the business world might use it,
- 9:45but it sure resonates with me as I look back on my years of
- 9:48ministry. The first step I do, you watch,
- 9:55we talk. The second step I do, you help,
- 10:03we talk. The third step, you do, I help.
- 10:12We talk. The 4th step you do, I watch, we
- 10:21talk. And the 5th step you do, someone
- 10:27else watches, you talk with them.
- 10:31Now there's a lot of time in between these and when I look
- 10:35back on my 29 years of pastoring in North Phoenix, I was so eager
- 10:42to delegate and to to take risks and to trust that I didn't spend
- 10:49enough time talking afterwards. Because when it said, I do you
- 10:55watch, we talk. Well, the whole purpose of
- 10:58talking is to explain how come I did what I did, how I did it.
- 11:04There's a reason behind it. And, and to just to talk that
- 11:09out and to get an understanding that's all about mentoring
- 11:13discipleship. And I look back and I go, you
- 11:17know, I didn't talk enough. And some people say you talk too
- 11:23much already. But in that discipleship time, I
- 11:27didn't spend enough time really going through why I do what I
- 11:32do. And, you know, and as the church
- 11:37here, Calvary Church, there are decisions that are made that are
- 11:41changes that go on. There are always reasons behind
- 11:45them and rather than saying, well, I don't like that when why
- 11:49did they didn't ask me about this?
- 11:51Well, how about just going to someone in in the leadership,
- 11:57one of the pastors and say, what was the mindset going on that
- 12:01led up to this change? And I think you will find 100%
- 12:05of the time that there's a very good reason why that change was
- 12:09made the way it was. And sure, you could do it a
- 12:12million different times or different ways, but it but
- 12:16there's a reason behind it, not just arbitrary, arbitrary
- 12:21discipleship process. And then he says faithful men.
- 12:24And let me tell you, it's hard to find faithful men when
- 12:29there's a target on your back by the government.
- 12:33Everybody wants to hide. Everybody wants to just like get
- 12:35out of the way and and be secret and not be seen.
- 12:39Faithful men. What's that mean?
- 12:41Those who have proven over time to be trustworthy, solid in
- 12:47faith, servant hearted, more concerned about others than
- 12:52their own comforts and conveniences.
- 12:55Let me just say that again. Faithful men, and women for that
- 12:59matter. But here Paul talks about
- 13:01faithful men, those who have proven over time to be
- 13:06trustworthy, solid in faith, servant hearted, more concerned
- 13:12about others than their own comforts and conveniences.
- 13:18Who can find a faithful man? The Lord knows where they are.
- 13:25And this is a a good exhortation to us to say, you know, my world
- 13:32isn't the most important thing. His Kingdom is the most
- 13:37important thing, and when I say not my will but yours be done,
- 13:43do I really mean it or do I say as long as I can have veto
- 13:48power? No, that's not in there.
- 13:52Your will, not mine, because you believe that His will is better
- 13:57than even your great plan. That makes so much sense.
- 14:03Verses 3 through 7 You therefore must endure hardship as a good
- 14:10soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare and
- 14:15tangles himself with the affairs of this life that he may please
- 14:19him who enlisted him as a soldier.
- 14:22And also, if anyone competes in athletics, he's not crowned
- 14:26unless he competes according to the rules.
- 14:30The hard working farmer must be first to partake of the crops.
- 14:34Consider what I say and may the Lord give you understanding and
- 14:38all things. Here's that word.
- 14:41Therefore again, verse 3. Therefore, OK, be strong in the
- 14:46grace, Tim. Now understand things are going
- 14:52to get hard, endure hardship. This is fascinating.
- 14:57What? When I was studying this, I went
- 15:00back to chapter one, verse 8, where Paul says share with me in
- 15:06the sufferings, Timothy share with me in the sufferings.
- 15:10Timothy wasn't in prison. Paul was in prison.
- 15:13So what's he talking about? I have to go into prison with
- 15:16Paul. No, he says absolutely identify
- 15:19with my sufferings and join with me, identify with me.
- 15:24And it's one Greek word. It's a compound word, sue
- 15:28cacopatheo. So I mean, if you learn that
- 15:32word SU cacopatheo, you can say that if you smash your thumb
- 15:36with a hammer, oh, SU cathopatheo, you know, it's
- 15:40better than swearing. OK, So just say a Greek word.
- 15:44Share with me in the sufferings. But now Paul is saying here,
- 15:53Timothy, you have to endure your own hardship.
- 15:58Yes, I want you to share with me and my sufferings, but Tim,
- 16:04you're going to have to endure your own hardship.
- 16:08And that Greek word is the core of that first word, cacopatheo.
- 16:14It means to basically endure evil sufferings in the context
- 16:21of what Paul is writing about. It's the Roman world, it's the
- 16:27dangers, it's the difficulties. OK, That's the context.
- 16:32What about our world? Our world?
- 16:36Sometimes it's our families, sometimes it's our job,
- 16:41sometimes it's our health, sometimes it's our finances.
- 16:46And we're going through such hardship.
- 16:50I remember when I was doing Calvary Live, one guy called in
- 16:54and said I've been living in my car for five months and I'm so
- 16:57afraid the car is going to break down.
- 16:58I don't know what to do. So we prayed together and, and
- 17:03the first thing we prayed for is for the Lord to calm the storm
- 17:06in his heart because how can he hear the next step if there's
- 17:10all this static going on based on fear?
- 17:15I mean, life can be so challenging and difficult and
- 17:21you hear the stories in it and it, it just blows my mind.
- 17:25I'm going God, how, how, how can we help?
- 17:29How can you help? Well, because God knows he
- 17:34starts on the inside to calm the storm on the inside.
- 17:40Yes, you're going through hardship, But Paul said to
- 17:44Timothy, you therefore must endure hardship.
- 17:51And the underline, the word must.
- 17:56There's going to be difficulties.
- 17:58I mean, Jesus tipped off his disciples, didn't he?
- 18:00He says, if anyone follow me, come after me, let him deny
- 18:04himself, take up his instrument of death daily, the cross, and
- 18:12follow me. Just know that that's a
- 18:15possibility. Own it.
- 18:18It's yours because they're going to do it with me.
- 18:24Consider verse 7. Consider what I say and may the
- 18:27Lord give you understanding in all things.
- 18:31And you know when, when you look at these three illustrations of
- 18:34the soldier, the athlete, and the farmer, I want you to know
- 18:39that there are there's a need here in these three
- 18:43illustrations for Timothy to have endurance, focus, that's
- 18:48the soldier, obedience and discipline.
- 18:52That's the athlete and labor, and the word labor means
- 18:58laboring to the point of exhaustion.
- 19:03Timothy, take a look at these three normal aspects of life
- 19:07around you. Look what they go through just
- 19:11in the natural that they're able to do those things because they
- 19:15have a goal in mind and that goal keeps them pressing on.
- 19:21Timothy, you have a greater goal than they have, but you're going
- 19:26to need the same endurance, focus, obedience, discipline,
- 19:34and labor. It's not for sissies.
- 19:40You can do this, Timothy, if they can do it, you can do it
- 19:46according to the power of God, because he points that out in
- 19:50verse 8 in chapter 1, according to the power of God.
- 19:55And so shifting gears a little bit to your life, what you're
- 19:59going through your hardship right now, or maybe somebody you
- 20:03love that's going through hardship, you must endure
- 20:08hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
- 20:12That's God's calling for you. Not to run, but to endure
- 20:19because God is working in the waiting.
- 20:22Like Pastor Sean taught us over the weekend, God is working in
- 20:26the waiting. And yes, it's so hard and God
- 20:30knows it's difficult, but He wants to give you the power to
- 20:34endure because in the enduring your faith muscles strengthen.
- 20:41Who goes to the gym and just, you know, month after month, all
- 20:45they do is pick up a bar and just kind of like do this, toss
- 20:48it around for like 10 minutes and then put it down and go
- 20:51home. What are you doing?
- 20:54You're not building up muscle. You got to put weights on.
- 20:58The silly thing. Well, I don't want to put
- 21:01weights on. It's heavy.
- 21:02Well, that's the point because when it, when that bar gets
- 21:07heavy and you got to lift, you're starting to stretch and
- 21:11tear certain fibers and, and you're, you're building up
- 21:15muscle and then you get used to it and you got to put a little
- 21:19more on to keep building up the muscle.
- 21:22It's the same way with faith in the hardship.
- 21:27God wants to grow you and strengthen your faith.
- 21:32I think it's in Hebrews chapter 5 verse 27 where Paul says I
- 21:45hate these thin pages. You can't turn the pages fast.
- 22:02But solid food, verse 14, belongs to those who are of full
- 22:06age, that is, those who by reason of use, have their senses
- 22:11exercised to discern both good and evil.
- 22:16When you're in the middle of that hardship and you're
- 22:18enduring hardship and you're looking to the Lord, you're
- 22:24having your spiritual senses exercise to discern good and
- 22:28evil. You're growing in strength.
- 22:32And we say God take the weights off, take the weights off.
- 22:35Well, he says, well, I'm not done.
- 22:37We're not done. But he's a great personal
- 22:39trainer. You know, we're not done with
- 22:41that. You can do this, Nemo.
- 22:43You know, you can do this just a little more, a few more reps.
- 22:51No, please, I'm with you. Hang in there.
- 22:56This is my strength. Here's a power bar.
- 23:00You know, that's God's word to Timothy.
- 23:06So so important to us as well. Consider what I say and may the
- 23:12Lord give you understanding in all things.
- 23:14Verse 8 verse 8 to 13 Paul says I want to put myself out there
- 23:22as an example Tim on how you can endure.
- 23:27Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised
- 23:32from the dead. According to my gospel, for
- 23:35which I suffer trouble as an evil doer, even to the point of
- 23:40chains, but the word of God is not chained.
- 23:44Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that
- 23:51they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ
- 23:55Jesus with eternal glory. This is a faithful saying.
- 24:00If we died with Him, we shall also live with Him.
- 24:06If we endure, we shall also reign with Him.
- 24:11If we deny Him, He also will deny us.
- 24:17If we are faithless, He remains faithful.
- 24:20He cannot deny Himself to help with this enduring of the
- 24:27hardship. The thought life must be founded
- 24:30upon the realities of what Jesus has done on our behalf.
- 24:35Because why would Timothy be ashamed?
- 24:37Why would he have a tendency to want to pull back?
- 24:40Well, because he could. They could kill him.
- 24:44And so Paul says, well remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of
- 24:48David was raised from the dead. Death isn't the end.
- 24:55Death is just the process. Jesus said he that believes in
- 25:00me shall never die. That's because he knows the real
- 25:05us is inside this body looking out these windows.
- 25:09Because the real you is inside there.
- 25:12You're looking out these windows.
- 25:15You live in this house and you know, the shingles fall off up
- 25:20here, the plumbing backs up, you know, in the house.
- 25:24You know what I'm talking about. But the real essence inside
- 25:31here, God knows who you are deep down He knows who you are.
- 25:38Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David, God fulfilled
- 25:42that prophecy, was raised from the dead according to my gospel,
- 25:46for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer.
- 25:50Therefore, verse 10, I endure all things for the sake of the
- 25:56elect. I mean, your parents, we're
- 26:00praying about parents and children today.
- 26:05When your kids are very, very sick and they're lying in bed
- 26:10and you're sitting on the bed stroking their head.
- 26:16Have you ever prayed? God, would you just put this
- 26:18sickness on me and let them go? I all handle it.
- 26:23They don't know what's going on. Paul says here, I endure all
- 26:31things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain
- 26:37salvation, which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
- 26:42Did you ever consider that your kids are in your life according
- 26:47to God's plan and you lost your job and you're going, Oh no, the
- 26:53kids aren't going to be able to have this or that and Christmas
- 26:56is going to look terrible and they're going to hate us?
- 26:59Come on, wait a minute. Maybe God is using you to train
- 27:05them on how to make it through lean times.
- 27:11So how do you pull together during a lean time?
- 27:14That's a that's a discipleship with your kids.
- 27:18No, I can't have my special $200 trainers.
- 27:22OK, well, OK, let's talk about that.
- 27:32I endure all things for the sake of the elect.
- 27:36And as a father, I would say I will endure whatever else to
- 27:41protect my kids. The gospel is worth it.
- 27:51Verse 11, this a faithful saying.
- 27:53And verse 1112 and 13 are like one of the first hymns in the
- 27:57Christian community where they would say this.
- 28:02This is one of the faithful sayings that we see in the New
- 28:05Testament. If we died with him, what's to
- 28:10what's Paul talking about? Difficulty.
- 28:12And he's going to die. If we died with him, we shall
- 28:16also reign with him. Excuse me.
- 28:18If we died with him, we shall live with him.
- 28:23If we endure, we shall reign with him.
- 28:27And then he says if we deny him, he also will deny us.
- 28:34And you go, what? Well, Jesus said that, but he
- 28:38was talking about those who would hear the gospel and say, I
- 28:41want nothing to do with it. I want nothing to do with this
- 28:44Jesus. Wow, I've talked to people that
- 28:47actually say that and it's like, really?
- 28:50Are you kidding? No, that's all.
- 28:52It's it's just all a well-intentioned scam.
- 28:57My relatives. If we deny him, he will also
- 29:02deny us before the Father. That's how serious that is.
- 29:07And this is part of the faithful saying, because it's true, it's
- 29:13not everybody gets to heaven. It's not God is an old dot
- 29:16doting grandfather saying, aw shucks, come on in anyway.
- 29:19You know it's not how it is. There was a line drawn.
- 29:25You hear the gospel, you either accept it, you're rejected.
- 29:31If you deny Jesus, he will deny you before the Father.
- 29:36That's true. And there are times when we are
- 29:41faithless, but it doesn't change God.
- 29:48It says here he remains faithful even though I become unfaithful,
- 29:54He remains faithful. My activity doesn't change God.
- 30:00He cannot deny Himself. These four truths became a kind
- 30:10of rallying hymn among the believers during those difficult
- 30:14times. It's good to summarize things
- 30:17like this. Well, let's go on to the second
- 30:21part of the chapter. Erring believers must be stopped
- 30:25because Paul is shifting gears here in verse 14 and verses 14
- 30:30and 19. He says he writes this.
- 30:33Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord
- 30:37not to strive about words, to no prophet, to the ruin of the
- 30:41hearers. Be diligent to present yourself
- 30:44from prove to God a worker who does not need to be ashamed,
- 30:48rightly dividing the word of truth.
- 30:51But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will
- 30:56increase to more ungodliness, and their message will spread
- 31:00like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of
- 31:04this sort who have strayed concerning the truth, saying
- 31:08that the resurrection has already passed and they
- 31:12overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless, the solid
- 31:17foundation of God stands having this seal.
- 31:20The Lord knows those who are His, and let everyone who names
- 31:25the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
- 31:29Let's talk about this section straying from the gospel, Paul
- 31:37says in verse 14. Remind them of these things,
- 31:41just the things that he said here so far in this chapter.
- 31:45Keep the main thing, the main thing.
- 31:49Don't get distracted. Don't get caught up in arguments
- 31:52over words because you missed. It's like you get so locked in
- 31:58on the tree, you miss the forest.
- 32:01And these are difficult times. You, I mean, we live in
- 32:05difficult times and it's so easy to get distracted.
- 32:08Oh, why did they do that? They shouldn't have done that.
- 32:10And you know that that person is this kind of political party and
- 32:14I'm not going to even visit them anymore because that's
- 32:17ridiculous. And all of a sudden we build up
- 32:19these non essentials with the gospel from Yeah, and we and we
- 32:25put the gospel aside. That's that's not when you do
- 32:29that you don't get the power of God.
- 32:33You just get your own opinion. Don't strive about words.
- 32:40It's easy to get sidetracked on non essentials that pull focus
- 32:44away from all that Jesus has done for us.
- 32:50And it's easy to want to defend the gospel, to start getting
- 32:53into arguments, to try to prove the point.
- 32:57But you forget you're missing that it's the Holy Spirit that
- 33:00has to bring conviction, not you.
- 33:04I can't bring some, if I can talk somebody into accepting
- 33:07Jesus, they could be talked out of it.
- 33:10If the Holy Spirit's not involved.
- 33:15Come on, it's a whole don't play Holy Spirit.
- 33:18He's, he's unique, he's separate, he's powerful.
- 33:21Yes, present the truth, but the Holy Spirit has to bring them to
- 33:26repentance, to open their eyes. And we'll talk about that a
- 33:30little later on in the chapter. Sometimes there's so much focus
- 33:37on a word in Christian circles that ends up contradicting the
- 33:41text and they redefine what it means.
- 33:47For instance, you ever heard the verse in Philippians 4?
- 33:52I can do all things to Christ who strengthens me.
- 33:56Well, that means whatever I want to do, I can do because Christ
- 34:00will give me the strength to do it.
- 34:02Well, I think you before you pull that promise out of the
- 34:06bread box, I think you need to look at the context because the
- 34:11context says this. Philippians 4 verse 12 and 13.
- 34:16I know how to be abased and I know how to abound everywhere
- 34:25and in all things. I have learned both to be full
- 34:31and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
- 34:38I can do all things to Christ who strengthens me.
- 34:43You know what that means? I can endure whatever life
- 34:49throws at me. I can endure because Christ
- 34:52gives me the strength to make it through.
- 34:55That's the context. It's not like say it and it
- 35:00happens. And there's also Ashley, Paul
- 35:07says to the ruin of the hearers. And man, I tell you, I have in
- 35:11my years of pastoring, I've ran across situations with people,
- 35:15they are destroyed in their faith because of of false
- 35:20doctrine that they had been taught.
- 35:22And they weren't able to meet up to the standard that they were
- 35:27told they had to meet. And they felt like they were
- 35:30failing Christians and maybe their salvation was in jeopardy.
- 35:34And I mean, I remember one family coming up to me on a
- 35:38Wednesday night and and saying, we, we really like it here, but
- 35:42we're we're not supposed to be here because our pastor told us
- 35:45that if we go to any other church, we'll lose our
- 35:48salvation. This what I'm going well, let me
- 35:54give you a prophecy. Thus saith the Lord, Leave that
- 35:57church at all. My gosh, how can you?
- 36:00What says that? Let every man abide in the
- 36:02calling wherein he is called out of First Corinthians 7.
- 36:06That's totally not the context. I mean, they were so broken.
- 36:11They were so ripped apart, and you know, they're still at the
- 36:15church today. That was back in the 80s.
- 36:19Praise the Lord, but it makes you upset.
- 36:24Ruin of the hearers. That's a real thing that
- 36:26happens. Timothy is exhorted here.
- 36:30Make sure the gospel that you preach is sound by being a
- 36:35worker who rightly divides the word of truth.
- 36:41And then verses 16 to 19, these babblings from others, he calls
- 36:46them, will increase to more ungodliness and even overthrow
- 36:50the faith of son. But I like verse 19.
- 36:56The solid foundation of God stands.
- 37:00These are so important. These are like tensions.
- 37:03These are like things that create balance. 1 pulls against
- 37:07the other #1 the Lord knows those who are his.
- 37:13But #2 the life should show it. Let everyone who names the name
- 37:19of Christ depart from iniquity. And so there's that tension
- 37:24there. Or maybe you can call it 2 rails
- 37:27on which the train rides. Both are important.
- 37:32Yes, the Lord knows who those who are his, but their life
- 37:37better show it long term. He's not talking about a trial
- 37:40you have today or or tomorrow, but he's talking about a long
- 37:45term practice. And then in verses 20 to 22,
- 37:53Paul brings this other illustration.
- 37:58He says here, But in a great house there are not only vessels
- 38:01of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor
- 38:05and some for dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses
- 38:09himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor,
- 38:13sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good
- 38:17work. Flee also youthful lust, but
- 38:20pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call
- 38:25on the Lord out of a pure heart. Here's another illustration Paul
- 38:28puts in here of a great massive mansion.
- 38:34And in a great house you've got vessels of gold and silver and
- 38:37some wood and clay, and they're used for different things, some
- 38:40for honor, some for dishonor. And then he shifts it and he
- 38:44says, here's what I'm talking about.
- 38:46You're a vessel in our master's house.
- 38:50Don't be a vessel of dishonor at some for use.
- 38:57I mean, I remember down in Mexico doing some outreach in
- 39:01Mexico when we were at this hotel, just a small hotel, small
- 39:05little village, really. I'm not even sure how they even
- 39:08had a hotel. But the plumbing, the pipes were
- 39:13so small that when you had to go #2 you had to take the paper and
- 39:20put it in the trash can right next to the toilet.
- 39:24And, and there were other people that had been there.
- 39:29And so I'm, I'm sorry that, I mean, you can't Unsee this.
- 39:33This is this is my picture of a vessel of dishonor, OK.
- 39:45I'm sorry, And Paul is talking about Christians not being a
- 39:55vessel of dishonor. Fellas, if you're dabbling with
- 40:01pornography, you're being a vessel of dishonor because
- 40:07you're defiling the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 40:14Ladies, when you are depressed and you start going to stores to
- 40:27buy, buy, buy to try to bring comfort and you end up getting
- 40:32yourself in worse financial trouble, it's a vessel of
- 40:37dishonor. It's not how God wants you to
- 40:39live. He'll provide, but he's got to
- 40:44calm the storm in your heart first.
- 40:49So that's why he says in verse 21, therefore, if anyone
- 40:52cleanses himself from the latter, being a vessel of
- 40:55dishonor, he will be a vessel for honour, sanctified, which
- 41:00means cleansed and set aside for holy use, useful for the master,
- 41:06prepared for every good work. And then he says to Timothy,
- 41:10flee youthful lusts. What are youthful lusts?
- 41:17Well, they're lusts that come that are pretty common during
- 41:22our teen youthful years when the hormones are raging.
- 41:27Those behaviors and patterns which are especially prevalent
- 41:31in heightened hormonal youths. But here's the thing, even the
- 41:38thoughts God calls sin, the thoughts of doing those things
- 41:45are sin in God's eyes. Jesus said it Matthew 5 verse
- 41:5128. But I say to you that whoever
- 41:54looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery
- 41:58with her in his heart. And the point Jesus was making
- 42:02is when God sees sin, it's not just the outward behavior that's
- 42:07happened. It's what goes on inside even
- 42:09before it happens. To flee youthful lust means
- 42:15you're not only choosing not to partake, but you're making every
- 42:19effort to run. Flee the other way.
- 42:23Don't dabble with it. Well, you know, nobody knows.
- 42:27Just come on, stop it. It says flee.
- 42:33And actually no matter what your age, you can find these lusts
- 42:36and desires rising up which are typified by our younger years.
- 42:41So it's not just stop it, it's run to something and that's
- 42:46important. Run to righteousness, what's
- 42:52right in the sight of God, Faith, love, peace, purity of
- 42:59heart. And I know abuse has
- 43:02illustration before, but I call it the royal flesh.
- 43:07Sorry, it's another toilet thing, but the royal flesh, when
- 43:11your thought life starts going down a wrong exit, you
- 43:17acknowledge it before the Lord and you say, God, would you have
- 43:22the Holy Spirit flush out my thought life and cleanse me and
- 43:28put your truth and your way in my mind and bring a song to my
- 43:34mind. Flush out my mind, Lord.
- 43:37And I want to tell you he's faithful to do it, but you've
- 43:41got to be intentional to do it. And then closing here, verses 23
- 43:49to 26, stay away from quarrels because sometimes we just want
- 43:58to say I love you enough. I'm trying to get you to see
- 44:01that Jesus is the way and you can get into quarrels with
- 44:04people, it tells Timothy. But avoid foolish and ignorant
- 44:09disputes, knowing they generate strife.
- 44:14And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel, but be gentle to
- 44:19all, able to teach, patient in humility, correcting those who
- 44:28are in opposition. If God will haps grant, will
- 44:34perhaps grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,
- 44:39and that they may come to their senses and escape.
- 44:43The snare of the devil haven't been taken captive by him to do
- 44:47his will. Powerful Section.
- 44:53In the midst of holding the line on biblical truth, one must be
- 44:57careful not to enter into foolish and ignorant disputes
- 45:01and strivings. So very important.
- 45:09God has to grant repentance. The Holy Spirit has to do the
- 45:13work. I remember before I got saved,
- 45:17when these Christians moved into the house that we were living in
- 45:20and they started presenting the gospel, I mocked them.
- 45:23I said get out of here. I I want nothing to do.
- 45:26It hadn't happened yet. God hadn't granted repentance
- 45:29yet. But I like the persevering
- 45:36nature of God never giving up. He never gives up.
- 45:49I want to close with this thought.
- 45:50In 2nd Corinthians 4, verses 3 through 6.
- 45:55Paul writes here. But even if our gospel is
- 45:58veiled, it's veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the
- 46:06God of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light
- 46:15of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God,
- 46:20should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves,
- 46:26but Christ Jesus the Lord and ourselves, your bondservants for
- 46:32Jesus sake. For it is the God who commanded
- 46:37light to shine out of darkness, who has shown in our hearts to
- 46:43give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face
- 46:48of Jesus Christ. Verse 6 there brings us back to
- 46:53Genesis where God said let there be light and there was light.
- 47:03And in the Hebrew it's much more abrupt.
- 47:07God said light be light was and if you're a believer here
- 47:14tonight, God has spoken that light into you.
- 47:21He spoke it. It was a Fiat from God that
- 47:24opened your eyes to the Oh my goodness, it's true.
- 47:30And that's what the Lord has to do, the work in bringing others
- 47:34around. Endure hardship as a good
- 47:39soldier of Jesus Christ. So much in this chapter.
- 47:44We've just kind of skipped rocks, you know, on the surface,
- 47:48there's so much here. Take your hardship to the Lord,
- 47:56lay it before the cross and say to him, I will endure until
- 48:04you're done. By the power of God have mercy.
- 48:14Let's pray. Father God, thank you for your
- 48:19word tonight. So many things.
- 48:24Please help us Lord. I just know of so many life
- 48:31situations even here represented those online listening just so
- 48:39challenging, so heartbreaking with children separated from
- 48:45parents so many things hardship. And we ask God that you would
- 48:54help us take these words to heart and Lord that you would be
- 49:01glorified as we endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus
- 49:09Christ. So do your work Lord in US,
- 49:15through US, around us. And tonight as we close here, if
- 49:21if you haven't ever surrendered your life to Christ, it's time
- 49:24to do it now before it's too late.
- 49:32And if this is the conviction on your heart.
- 49:34I want you to come up after the service and talk to the pastors
- 49:38and say I need to turn my life over to Jesus and they'll lead
- 49:43you in that process in Jesus name, Amen.
