- 0:00Speaker 1: I was going to say, speaking of quarterbacks, I am
- 0:02Speaker 1: dying to see Faison Brandon for the University of Tennessee
- 0:05Speaker 1: up against Georgia Tech. This game coverage presented by PrizePix here.
- 0:09Speaker 1: TJ is going to sit this one out in respect
- 0:11Speaker 1: to the ACC because of everything that has happened with
- 0:14Speaker 1: his Florida State Devils this week. But, Cole, I'll go
- 0:17Speaker 1: to you first here with Faison Brandon. His first road
- 0:20Speaker 1: game is something we talked about during the offseason was, hey,
- 0:23Speaker 1: you know, they got to figure out their quarterback situation.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The home opener is not going to be something that
- 0:26Speaker 1: really keeps them up at night. But it's like, hey,
- 0:28Speaker 1: you're going on the road against Georgia Tech, and then
- 0:31Speaker 1: pretty early on in the season, you're tested within SEC play.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So what do you expect from Faison Brandon against Georgia Tech,
- 0:36Speaker 1: who struggled, which is putting it mildly, against Colorado?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, if you would have told me that Colorado was
- 0:43Speaker 2: the more physically imposing team, I would have scoffed. We
- 0:46Speaker 2: also have the viral video of what happened with the
- 0:49Speaker 2: strength and conditioning coach.
- 0:50Speaker 3: And that's not a.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Shot at her whatsoever. It's just you think a certain way,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and that's the way your brain is wired. And you
- 0:56Speaker 2: think that Brent Key is not going to allow his
- 0:58Speaker 2: team to be complacent in the most obvious area, physicality.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And they got worked in the trenches. So they did.
- 1:05Speaker 2: They were terrible in run defense. And one thing that
- 1:08Speaker 2: I thought was going to be such a major win
- 1:10Speaker 2: for a program like Georgia Tech is is that they'd
- 1:13Speaker 2: be able to run the football, especially with what you
- 1:14Speaker 2: got with Justice Haynes as your lead back. They were
- 1:17Speaker 2: outrushed 153-89, and you got a better running back in
- 1:22Speaker 2: college football than Deshaun Bishop sitting in Knoxville, Tennessee. And
- 1:25Speaker 2: you got some good depth behind him, too. So the
- 1:27Speaker 2: one thing that I think is going to be really
- 1:28Speaker 2: important in this game, if you are Josh Heupel and company,
- 1:32Speaker 2: you're going to have to have the rushing attack set
- 1:35Speaker 2: up to pass. And that's a good thing because of
- 1:37Speaker 2: most of these offenses that we're so accustomed to seeing,
- 1:39Speaker 2: the Alex Goloshes, partially the Lane Kiffins, the Jeff Lebbies,
- 1:42Speaker 2: and Josh Heupel, they use the run to set up
- 1:45Speaker 2: to pass. They're very much a run-oriented unit that allows
- 1:48Speaker 2: themselves to get the explosive plays downfield. So I want
- 1:51Speaker 2: to be able to see Josh Heupel kind of go
- 1:53Speaker 2: after this defensive line the way that Colorado did with
- 1:56Speaker 2: Brennan Marion last week and be able to kind of
- 1:58Speaker 2: tire them out. So where you have them now having
- 2:01Speaker 2: to make some plays to where you're throwing a linebacker
- 2:03Speaker 2: or maybe a safety closer towards the line of scrimmage
- 2:05Speaker 2: just to be able to take away the rushing element,
- 2:08Speaker 2: which you're not really doing. What you're doing is you're
- 2:10Speaker 2: now allowing yourself to find the defense in the trap
- 2:13Speaker 2: and and take that deep shot down the field to
- 2:15Speaker 2: a Mike Matthews, to a Braylon Staley, to a TK Keys,
- 2:18Speaker 2: to whoever is the next big-time receiver. And we know
- 2:21Speaker 2: that Faison Brandon is able to make those throws. The
- 2:24Speaker 2: big question that I have is, can you simplify this
- 2:27Speaker 2: offense enough to make sure that the road environment... Is
- 2:31Speaker 2: it going to be too much for Faison Brandon? I'm
- 2:34Speaker 2: not saying that Faison Brandon is going to be bad
- 2:36Speaker 2: in this game. What I am saying is Faison Brandon
- 2:38Speaker 2: is going to have a tougher test against Georgia Tech
- 2:41Speaker 2: than he had against the Furman Paladins. That's just the
- 2:43Speaker 2: bottom line because it's the level of competition. But I
- 2:46Speaker 2: still believe that he's going to make the right reads.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I still believe that he's going to be accurate. I
- 2:50Speaker 2: think decision making is going to be really poignant in
- 2:52Speaker 2: this game, especially on third on execution. Can you have
- 2:57Speaker 2: a game plan that allows yourself to basically make Faison
- 3:01Speaker 2: Brannan an asset of this offense, but not the driving
- 3:04Speaker 2: force of this offense? And this is one of those
- 3:06Speaker 2: games where you say to yourself, we have a Deshaun Bishop.
- 3:09Speaker 2: We need Deshaun Bishop to be able to do what
- 3:11Speaker 2: Deshaun Bishop does best.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I think what's really interesting and man, I've been struggling
- 3:16Speaker 4: with my voice all day and then I had about
- 3:17Speaker 4: a coughing fit.
- 3:18Speaker 3: So if something happens to me to the guys, it
- 3:19Speaker 3: was Mike Norvell.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Um, but I felt like Joffrey on the, uh, on
- 3:23Speaker 4: that episode where he was just like, I can't breathe.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Um, but yeah, I think what's.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Interesting is when we over react a lot of times
- 3:31Speaker 4: to week one, what I do think is probably not
- 3:36Speaker 4: an overreaction is, and I hate to say this cause
- 3:38Speaker 4: their fans are so nice. I just don't think Georgia
- 3:41Speaker 4: tech's very good. And I don't think they're going to
- 3:43Speaker 4: be very good this year. And I hope that's not mean.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I'd love to see them figure it out. But remember
- 3:49Speaker 4: how we talked in the Michigan game?
- 3:51Speaker 3: If there was a.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Now, maybe it's not quite the same because it is
- 3:55Speaker 4: still a true freshman. But can you think of a
- 3:58Speaker 4: coach you'd rather play less if your defense is not
- 4:00Speaker 4: very good? Can you think of a coach you'd rather
- 4:02Speaker 4: play less than Josh Heupel coming in town?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Like, this offense... Again, it was against Furman. I get it.
- 4:13Speaker 4: But when you look at Bishop and you look at
- 4:15Speaker 4: that offensive line and you look at the weapons and
- 4:17Speaker 4: you look at the talent that phase on has, and
- 4:19Speaker 4: I know it's just going to be a second game.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I think this has a chance to get kind of ugly,
- 4:24Speaker 4: kind of quick. And if Georgia tech doesn't, maybe Colorado
- 4:28Speaker 4: is a better team. Hey, guys, I'll get right back
- 4:31Speaker 4: to the clip of the Power 2 here on College
- 4:32Speaker 4: Football Addiction. But first, we picked all these more or
- 4:35Speaker 4: less options on our live show, the Power 2. You
- 4:37Speaker 4: can go check out that full episode over on College
- 4:40Speaker 4: Football Addiction. Make sure, one, you are subscribed here on
- 4:43Speaker 4: the channel affiliates or the College Football Addiction channel. Also,
- 4:46Speaker 4: make sure you're over there with prize picks on the app.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Play a $ 5 lineup. New users who do that with
- 4:51Speaker 4: the code HMA will get $ 150 in lineups if they win.
- 4:55Speaker 4: I've heard from several of you who've already done this.
- 4:57Speaker 4: A lot of fun lines this week. Go check them out.
- 4:59Speaker 4: We appreciate price picks for their support. I took the
- 5:01Speaker 4: more in just about everything. I got the less in
- 5:03Speaker 4: Arch Manning's total, but go check out the price picks app.
- 5:06Speaker 4: We appreciate them for their support.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Then they have been, but I was stunned watching that
- 5:12Speaker 3: game on Thursday. And I still don't even believe that
- 5:15Speaker 3: that game went down like it did.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Georgia Tech just, I, again, like we've said with every team,
- 5:21Speaker 4: like you kind of get challenged and, It's kind of
- 5:23Speaker 4: like the NFL. You're never as bad as you were
- 5:25Speaker 4: the last week, and you're never as good as you
- 5:26Speaker 4: were the last week. It kind of evens out. I
- 5:28Speaker 4: expect Georgia Tech to play better. I don't think this
- 5:30Speaker 4: is a very good matchup. And for a Tennessee defense
- 5:33Speaker 4: that's got a lot of change, with guys being out,
- 5:36Speaker 4: thank God Carter's back this week. Big shout-out to him.
- 5:38Speaker 4: I saw the fundraising stuff that he was doing to
- 5:40Speaker 4: give back. Just an excellent human being. With him being
- 5:44Speaker 4: back and just another kind of tune-up game for Jim
- 5:48Speaker 4: Knowles to try and get this defense right before Texas
- 5:50Speaker 4: comes to town. I think this is a game where
- 5:53Speaker 4: Jim Knowles' defense could look really good again because they
- 5:55Speaker 4: still do have talent. And it's a Georgia Tech offense
- 5:58Speaker 4: that really, I mean, when was the last time Georgia
- 6:01Speaker 4: Tech didn't score a touchdown? I mean, they got the
- 6:05Speaker 4: kick return, but they didn't score a touchdown at home
- 6:07Speaker 4: against the Colorado Buffaloes.
- 6:10Speaker 2: They got out physically gained by Colorado, but Brent Key
- 6:12Speaker 2: is your head coach.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yeah, they were so bad in the trenches. And I'm
- 6:16Speaker 4: not trying to pile on or be a jerk. The
- 6:18Speaker 4: Georgia Tech fans are so nice, but like, I am
- 6:22Speaker 4: shocked that their trenches were so bad against Colorado, Colorado
- 6:26Speaker 4: who replaced their whole offensive line.
- 6:28Speaker 3: You had Jordan scene go to LSU.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Like they don't have like a bunch of household names
- 6:32Speaker 4: that are just, this isn't like 2022 or 23.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Colorado where they were winning with a hundred and all
- 6:37Speaker 3: those guys. This is crazy, man.
- 6:39Speaker 4: And so I'll tell you what, Tennessee has got some
- 6:42Speaker 4: pieces missing on defense for sure. But if Colorado hasn't
- 6:45Speaker 4: figured things out in this nine days between games, it's
- 6:48Speaker 4: going to be, or, you know, Georgia Tech, sorry, hasn't
- 6:50Speaker 4: figured things out, but since the Colorado game, I think
- 6:52Speaker 4: it's got a chance to get ugly and they're, they're
- 6:54Speaker 4: going to need to, you know, I don't know, pull
- 6:56Speaker 4: something within themselves because if not, it's going to be
- 6:59Speaker 4: not good.
- 7:00Speaker 2: By the way, I apologize. I get numbers mixed up
- 7:02Speaker 2: from time to time. It was 183 to 51 in
- 7:06Speaker 2: Russian guards, not 151 to 83 in Russian guards. So
- 7:10Speaker 2: my apologies, they outworked them in Colorado and they had
- 7:13Speaker 2: more efficient running backs. And again, You're talking about Deshaun
- 7:16Speaker 2: Bishop that is a premier running back in college football. Like,
- 7:19Speaker 2: the only reason we don't talk about him at the
- 7:21Speaker 2: same level of Jaden Baugh and Kiwan Lacey and Ahmad
- 7:24Speaker 2: Hardy is because of they're just more popular names in
- 7:27Speaker 2: the grand scheme of things. Deshaun Bishop's right up there
- 7:29Speaker 2: with them, and he had a good season last year.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And you really got to try, like, here's my thing
- 7:34Speaker 2: for you guys. I didn't think Alberto Mendoza played bad.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I thought that he was actually one of the big
- 7:39Speaker 2: reasons why you probably had a shot in that game,
- 7:42Speaker 2: especially late with some of the throws he made. But
- 7:44Speaker 2: if you weren't able to have good protection up front,
- 7:46Speaker 2: it doesn't matter because this is still a defensive line
- 7:49Speaker 2: that can get after you. It may not be as
- 7:51Speaker 2: potent as it was last season, but it still can
- 7:53Speaker 2: get after you.
- 7:55Speaker 1: There were some game management issues as well for Georgia
- 7:57Speaker 1: Tech down the stretch there against Colorado. Juju Lewis played
- 8:00Speaker 1: a horrible game until the fourth quarter, and he really
- 8:03Speaker 1: did a nice job there on that last drive. I
- 8:06Speaker 1: don't expect Faison Brandon to do that. I think he
- 8:09Speaker 1: will be more consistent. I don't think we realize from
- 8:13Speaker 1: the outside, looking in how big it is for this
- 8:15Speaker 1: program to get Arian Carter back to TJ mentioned. I
- 8:19Speaker 1: feel like he will be out for blood. I feel
- 8:21Speaker 1: like the defense will be out for blood. Not that
- 8:23Speaker 1: this is some deep seated rivalry game or anything. Atlanta
- 8:27Speaker 1: isn't the toughest place to play and all due respect
- 8:30Speaker 1: to Georgia tech. So I like Texas and Texas. I
- 8:33Speaker 1: like Tennessee in this. I like Tennessee to cover. I
- 8:36Speaker 1: don't think it's going to be LSU Clemson by any means,
- 8:40Speaker 1: but I think Tennessee is comfortable.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I think that you will see some good from Georgia
- 8:45Speaker 2: Tech's offense.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Sure.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But not enough to make you feel confident in this game.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You're going to learn a little bit more about what
- 8:50Speaker 2: are the faults of Jim Knowles' defense that may not
- 8:53Speaker 2: be corrected by the time you take on Texas.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But I'm with Tom.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I think Tennessee rolls. I think Tennessee wins by 14
- 8:59Speaker 2: and they beat the cover.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I think this is a perfect spot for Tennessee.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Mostly because this to me does not feel like a
- 9:08Speaker 4: game that should be super big in doubt.
- 9:11Speaker 3: And so I think you can have a couple of
- 9:14Speaker 3: mistakes in this game.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I don't know that you want to try and replicate
- 9:16Speaker 4: what SMU did with four turnovers, but I think this
- 9:19Speaker 4: is a game where you can try some things offensively
- 9:22Speaker 4: and defensively to learn what you need to do against Texas.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Because I'll just tell you, they're going to be undefeated
- 9:30Speaker 4: going to that Texas game. And I think the Longhorns win. Just,
- 9:34Speaker 4: being honest with you, I think there's too big of
- 9:35Speaker 4: a talent gap, but if they were to win that,
- 9:38Speaker 4: we started looking at Tennessee in a completely different light boys.
- 9:41Speaker 4: We start saying, yep, Tennessee could go to the playoff.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Like if they can beat Texas, they can beat anybody
- 9:46Speaker 3: else on that schedule. There's no doubt.
- 9:47Speaker 4: And so to me, it is, man, what can you
- 9:50Speaker 4: learn about yourself between now and that Texas game? I
- 9:53Speaker 4: think on the 26th to set yourself up for it.
- 9:57Speaker 4: And maybe there's nothing right. Maybe Texas is just too tolerable.
- 10:00Speaker 4: of a bridge to climb, but I do think that
- 10:03Speaker 4: it's just such a great opportunity for Tennessee because you
- 10:06Speaker 4: were thinking this.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Game would be a lot tougher.
- 10:07Speaker 4: When we looked at it in the off season, it
- 10:09Speaker 4: certainly wasn't a 14 or 13 and a half point
- 10:11Speaker 4: spread like it is right now. You can try some things.
- 10:14Speaker 4: You can learn some things about your defense. You can,
- 10:17Speaker 4: do your very best with phase on to put him
- 10:19Speaker 4: in good situations. But if he makes a mistake or two,
- 10:21Speaker 4: as long as it's not detrimental, I think this is
- 10:23Speaker 4: a great spot for Tennessee. And yeah, I think they
- 10:26Speaker 4: went by 17. I don't have a specific score, but
- 10:28Speaker 4: I've got them covering as well.
- 10:30Speaker 2: By the way, if, if Tennessee beats Texas in week four,
- 10:33Speaker 2: I will change my tune on which quarterback would I
- 10:35Speaker 2: rather have to phase on Brandon? I will like, if
- 10:38Speaker 2: you're able to go beat Texas and coach booms defense,
- 10:41Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Like at that point, I know Alabama's got
- 10:44Speaker 2: a guy in Keelan Russell, but there are very few
- 10:46Speaker 2: teams I think are going to be able to put
- 10:47Speaker 2: a lot of points up on Texas defensive front this year.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
