- 0:49SPEAKER_04: Tristan Texas Tech is seven and five, my man.
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry.
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: I'm just I'm still staring at this current Big 12 standings.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: I I just have been looking at this for hours.
- 1:00SPEAKER_05: I can't look away.
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: Top half, baby.
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: Top half, baby.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: First time since when, Steven?
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: Oh nine.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: Since 2009.
- 1:11SPEAKER_05: That was a great year for me.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Was that a good year for you?
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: Uh well, considering I was what?
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: 10 years old?
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: 13.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: You know math.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 1:21SPEAKER_04: I was born in 1996.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: Not 1999.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: Sometimes I forget that.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: Yes, I was 13.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, you were also 13.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: This is a crazy time in our lives.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, just playing youth baseball, eighth grade, just not just being the worst version of myself.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: That's okay.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: Acting like that.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: Middle school.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: Middle school's the worst version of yourself.
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: Middle school's probably the worst time in your entire life.
- 1:54SPEAKER_05: Barring barring like real tragedy, of course.
- 1:57SPEAKER_05: Of course, yeah.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: But in like a general scheme.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: There's no like there's no like good memories from middle school.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, like you think about like when you were happy or whatever, you were also just so awkward and so cringy, and it just makes you cringe at this point, thinking back at at middle school.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: You should get a memory memory wipe as soon as you get to high school.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: Or maybe like sophomore.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: Okay, maybe junior year of high school.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: That's when the memories can actually stick around.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: How does that sound?
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Perfect, perfect with me, guy.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: Uh Texas Tech Football seven and five.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: We are going to a good bowl game, my friend.
- 2:41SPEAKER_04: Um, we the last time we finished with seven wins in a season, Patrick Mullins was our quarterback, and we got stomped by LSU in the Texas Bowl.
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: So now we have the chance to play in what is the Texas Bowl, the Cheese It Bowl.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: There's a good a good amount of bowl games, like good bowl games.
- 3:01SPEAKER_05: You know what the crazy thing is, too?
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: It's like that this season is still better than that Patrick Mahomes season because oh, yeah.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we won seven games, but it we got that seventh win thanks to an out-of-conference game and beating Arkansas, and that wasn't a very good Arkansas team to begin with.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: I'm pretty sure that was the season Burt got fired.
- 3:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, and he's killing it in Illinois now.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: Burt's going nuts.
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: Is he killing it?
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: Champagne.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: Is he killing it in Illinois?
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: Or is he just like D's?
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: Did he finish like second or third in the West?
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: Are they in the good Big Ten?
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: Or is that the East?
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: I thought they were in the bad Big Ten division.
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: That everybody's six and six this year.
- 3:41SPEAKER_05: But still, I mean, I kill killing it in the scheme.
- 3:44SPEAKER_05: You know what?
- 3:44SPEAKER_05: This is an Illinois podcast.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: Um let's move on.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, with this Patrick Mahomes' uh season still wasn't in the green in the Big 12, and we managed to get into the green with Vaughn Sewer McGuire and every single quarterback in the state of Texas at the helm.
- 4:01SPEAKER_05: So it's a very impressive feat.
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about OU before we talk about kind of our thoughts on the season as a whole, because um, this was a terrible start to the game.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: Um, I think we were all depressed.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Yes, watching that first quarter.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, it was a nightmare.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: You you get a great kickoff return to start the game, uh, probably your longest of the season, I think.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: And then immediately, immediately, first play, you run a terrible trick play option that Oklahoma immediately blows up and they still try to run it, and then it's a fumble and it's a nightmare start.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, we didn't score until nine minutes, I believe, like 9 30 in the second quarter, and we ended with 51 points.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: I don't know how we did it, but uh yeah, dude, how were you feeling about at the beginning of that game?
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: I I think everyone was saying the same thing, like, wow, we're gonna we're gonna get murdered, aren't we?
- 4:54SPEAKER_05: This is gonna be a absolute blasting.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, but thankfully it did not turn out that way.
- 4:59SPEAKER_05: It was really funny whenever we got that kickoff return.
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: I was like, Philip, finally, with the first good kickoff of the entire year, and then it goes right the other way.
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: It's like, oh, that's about right.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: That's yeah, that's that's not about that's Texas tech football, baby.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: That's that's it right there, baby.
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: But dude, yeah, no, absolutely.
- 5:15SPEAKER_05: I think I I was kind of on the side, like, okay, I think I might actually turn this off uh at the end of the second quarter.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: No, I never so I pick a few games out of the year that I just say to you and Austin that we're gonna win, and I and it's usually worked out pretty well.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: I pick and choose my game, so it's like you're undefeated with it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: I think I'm like two and oh this season.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: When I was I just say it at the beginning, I'm like, we're gonna win this game no matter what happens, and then we immediately went down 17-0.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: And I was like, we're gonna win this game.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: I don't know how we're gonna do it, but we're gonna win this game somehow, some way.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: And I think if this game isn't the biggest example of the brand, I don't know what is because you started off horrible.
- 5:53SPEAKER_04: I mean, horrible.
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: Worst we've seen Texas Tech play all season long in that first quarter, and you overcome it and you score 51 points, and you beat OU.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: You first time in history, you beat Texas and Oklahoma in the same season.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, you get your seventh win, you go six and one at home.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: Um, that was that was a brand game right there.
- 6:14SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: That's the the hardest working, uh uh you know, best what's what's the thing?
- 6:19SPEAKER_05: The uh the hardest working team in the country.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: What's it?
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, hardest working, most competitive team.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: Some yeah, some Joeyism.
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: No, yeah, some some McGuire fortune.
- 6:31SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, but uh no, absolutely, dude.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: And I I think you're 100% true.
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: I think uh most any other team that we've seen in the past would collapse immediately after that first quarter.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: I don't know if any uh Texas Tech team that I've watched in years gone um would have come back from that.
- 6:46SPEAKER_05: I think it would have been shellacking no matter what, but I think we just have a grit in this team that truly just doesn't give up, you know.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: They just keep on digging and fighting and finding a way.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: Um, and it it was it was not only was it the brand game, you got the full Trey Wolf experience.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: Yes, that was that was that was oh, he misses an extra point.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: It's that Trey Wolf game.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: It was probably what would the tip.
- 7:11SPEAKER_04: It was it was a bad snap, it was a bad snap, bad hold.
- 7:15SPEAKER_04: That was the reason for the for the initial extra point.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: But yes, I was like, really?
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: I was like, Yeah, this that's how this we're gonna lose on that one point, aren't we?
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you just you just ran it in with Jalen Hutchings, and you got a great touchdown.
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: You changed all the momentum, and then you missed the extra point.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: I was like, come on, but it was it was the full Texas tech experience, I'm sure, in general, when we think about it, it was just truly highs and lows.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely highs.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: A lot of highs there from the second quarter on.
- 7:43SPEAKER_04: It was it was honestly insane that it was only a one-point game at halftime.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: I was like, I was double taking at my screen.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: I was like, how did that happen?
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: How did we play so terrible?
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: And then for nine minutes there, we just played unbelievable football.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: It was like a freaking 180.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: It was awesome.
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: It was so funny too.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: Like, this it was a retro Texas Tech game.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: Like, that was the uh that's the Texas Tech OU game that people are signing up for 10 years ago.
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, and it's just it the the amount of points that were scored over a hundred points at the end.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: Like it's just wild.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, it was like the uh I saw a comment, I don't know if it was on Reddit or something, but it was like this was like the Baker Mahomes game on like like crack, yeah.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: Like nothing.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: Like actually doing the drug, not yeah, no, like actually like freaking out and like sitting in the corner, like doing like injecting and shaking and injecting your arm.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: It was insane.
- 8:42SPEAKER_04: Um, Tyler Shuck was awesome this game.
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: I thought uh he had some plays.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: Uh he wasn't awesome in the first quarter.
- 8:49SPEAKER_04: I'll I'll give you that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, he really, really wanted to throw a pick six in this game.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: He wanted to so bad, and uh he finally threw that interception there in the fourth quarter.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: But overall, I thought he was really, really good this game.
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: Um, and uh I mean, we'll get to the quarterbacks when we're talking about kind of the whole season in general, but um, you gotta hand it to Tyler Shuck for uh you know losing his job basically to injury, um, and then coming back after Baron Morton gets hurt after Donovan Smith kind of loses the job, and he comes in and wins three straight to end off your year.
- 9:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's seven and one all time as the Texas Tech starting quarterback.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, it it's it's insane.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: I do I can't I can't wrap my head around what Tyler Shuck is.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: Is he good?
- 9:35SPEAKER_04: Is he not good?
- 9:37SPEAKER_04: I don't get it.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, that's it's a very fair question.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: And like he got how you pointed out, he's overcome a lot of adversary or adversity, a lot of things he really cannot control.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: But you know, obviously the guy's got the skill, and I'm going to admit that I was really giving Kitley a lot of crap in the first quarter.
- 9:55SPEAKER_05: Um, but him teamed up with uh Shuck, they won the game.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: It wasn't defense this time.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: No, it wasn't defense.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: Defense, you know, made a stand here and there where he really needed to, but otherwise, it was definitely offense having to outgun the other team in an old style way, like I was just saying, only this time we were you were able to actually win those games, which never worked out that way in the past.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: But no, dude, absolutely.
- 10:21SPEAKER_05: I I like that you pointed that out and gave him a lot of credit because I think the two of them actually really got it done.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think a lot of people have been quick to uh quick to judge Hitley, uh, you know, saying he's he's terrible, he's not calling the right plays, he's not running the ball, all this kind of stuff.
- 10:38SPEAKER_04: He did what you needed him to do this game.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there were a few plays here and there that we probably didn't agree with.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: Um, but overall, I was you scored 51 points, so you can't be mad at the offensive coordinator.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, you can be mad at the offensive coordinator if we scored seven, if we scored 14.
- 10:54SPEAKER_04: I understand it.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: No, he scored a 50 burger.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, and so you can't get mad at Zach Kidley for this one.
- 11:00SPEAKER_05: No, not at all, man.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: And uh just just a historic performance over all around.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, obviously, we can't, we're not the first people to tell you this, but you know, beating OU and Texas at the same time in the same season at home, too.
- 11:13SPEAKER_05: That's like that's what really rules, you know.
- 11:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, we haven't been able to get these teams at Lubbock in over a decade, and that's not an exaggeration.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: And just to send the old double T out with that score, that's gonna be that you know, they're gonna frame that picture and put it in different places around the athletic department at this point now, uh, before they start tearing down the end zone.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: But just what an awesome night, man.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: It was, it was great.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: It was uh it was a good season overall.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: I need to I want to highlight a few seniors because this really was, you know, this was your senior night.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: This is the last time a lot of these guys played in the Jones, but and they showed out.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, Sir Roderick Thompson, who actually does he does have a year of eligibility left, but he I think he's already basically determined he's going to the NFL.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: Um, two touchdowns on this one, 86 yards.
- 11:57SPEAKER_04: He really, this was your classic Sir Roderick Thompson game, where I mean, every time he gets the ball and he's just so patient with it and waits for that hole or waits to just use that speed to run around the entire the title, the entire huddle there.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: It's insane.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Uh Sir Roderick Thompson, I am so proud of that guy and so happy that he is a red raider, uh, and he is absolutely gonna go down as one of the best red raider running backs of all time, and that's not an exaggeration.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was about to say the same thing.
- 12:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's definitely going up on the board.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: Uh as you know, like you just said, all-time running back at Texas Tech.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: Um, and seems to be a room that's kind of growing a bit lately.
- 12:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's you know, we it wasn't that long ago we were talking about other great running backs.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: You get to see him with uh in that same realm.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: Um, and just a great game for him to go out on in the Jones, like you just said.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, so reliable this game.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: We like that was the player you wanted to see to have the ball in his hands the most.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: It wasn't necessarily Tyler Chuck slinging it.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: You wanted to see uh Todd, uh not Taj Brooks, also great running back, uh Sir Rodrick uh moving the ball forward on the on the ground.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: So, dude, just I'm gonna miss him so much, man.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: But I can't wait to see him get knighted in the NFL.
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, like that.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: I hope I hope yeah, uh it's pretty good.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: Um Rodrick and Adrian Fry, two guys that were here from Cliff Kingsbury.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: Cliff Kingsbury to Matt Wells to now Julie McGuire stayed all the way through, um, contributed during all those years, and to be through two different coaching changes and to just stick with the program and continue to be who they are.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: I appreciate them so much for what they did for Texas Tech, and they deserve that kind of recognition.
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: Um, some other guys that we are not gonna see uh play again for Texas Tech because of eligibility reasons, or uh in Tyree Wilson's case, uh he is going to the NFL.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be a first-round pick.
- 13:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, we already did the Tyree Love Fest on uh the last episode.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Guy rules.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: I wish I could have seen a few more games.
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, but he's I mean, he needs to do what he needs to do.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: Joey said the same thing.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: He's like, go get your money, man.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: You are gonna be an awesome red raider, an awesome NFL player.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: Definitely could have used him in this game.
- 14:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, but uh yeah, that's uh you know, that was certainly a side of the ball that was lacking in the against the Sooners, but no, 100%.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: So uh this was the last game at the Jones we saw from Muddy, uh Muddy Waters, Krishan Merriweather, uh Kosi Eldridge, who had a great season.
- 14:31SPEAKER_04: Um, Kosei, I don't know if a lot of people expected him to be uh, you know, a starter at linebacker.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: He was kind of in and out of the lineup the last few years, and he really came in strong, had 14 tackles in this OU game.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Muddy and Krishan, uh their play speaks for themselves.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: Those guys rock.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: Um, they're absolute staples at the safety linebacker position.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, those guys are going to be hard to replace in the future.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: Um, Vidale Scott, uh, two big TFLs there in overtime.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: Uh, huge plays.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: He was kind of uh a guy that played minimal this year, but uh was one of those transfers that came in and was a depth piece.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, but huge plays in the OU win.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Uh Dimitri Moore, another guy, came in with Joey.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, Keon Blankenbaker, Chad Towson as well.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: We are not gonna see in Red Raider uniforms.
- 15:18SPEAKER_05: Kind of bumming me out now.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, we're it was like, man, these guys are great, but uh they're never done again.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: We appreciate them.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: We appreciate them.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: We're not gonna see him play again, but hey, we appreciate them for all their work that they did for tech.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: 100%, man.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: Long list of other seniors that do have another year of eligibility.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: So keep your eye out.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, for I'm gonna go ahead and just nail them off here.
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, Tony Bradford, Jalen Hutchings.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: Uh, these guys have another year if they want it.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: Uh obviously, huge pieces on the defensive line there.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: Um, offensive line, Ethan Card, Kate Briggs, Weston Wright, Dennis Wilburn, and Cole Spencer will also, he was the transfer from Western Kentucky that didn't see the field this year because of injury.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: So he's got that medical gray shirt.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: Um, all those other guys, Dennis Wilburn and Weston Wright started the whole year.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Um, so that's two pieces that you'd love to have back.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: Um, Henry Teeter, tight end, he could come back if he wants to.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Um, Trey Wolf could come back if he wants to.
- 16:15SPEAKER_04: Um way he could, and he's got another year if he wants it.
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: Um, so we'll see what he decides.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, but he, I mean, he had a strong year, man.
- 16:23SPEAKER_04: He had a really, really solid year overall.
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: Um, so I'd love to have Trey Wolf back.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: Just consistency at your kicker position is always good.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: Um, our guy, Austin McNamara, he uh has a year left if he wants it.
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: If not, I would understand.
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: I think that dude is an NFL player for sure.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, didn't get a lot of chances because of uh Joey and and Zach Kitley's uh decision making and going forward on a lot of fourth downs this year, but um still one of the best punters in college football.
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: Um, rather than Reggie Pearson.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: Um, two guys at the safety position that uh has already been reported by Don Williams that uh Joey expects them back, which is massive to get those two back.
- 17:04SPEAKER_04: Reggie had uh two huge hits.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 17:11SPEAKER_04: I thought Reggie was gonna kill a man.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: 100%, dude.
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: That guy was out for uh getting the other guy.
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: I don't want to say anything too violent, but no, he was out for blood.
- 17:24SPEAKER_04: He was out for blood.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: When when they ran the the quarterback, the Philly special to the quarterback in overtime.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: Reggie just he was like, Oh boy, here we go.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: He had that in his eyes, and he was gonna crush, he was gonna crush Dylan Gabriel.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: It was awesome, and it was clean, dude.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: It was totally just a hit.
- 17:45SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 17:45SPEAKER_04: It's just one of those football plays you'd love to see.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: Uh Rabbit had the interception this game, he's been fantastic all year.
- 17:51SPEAKER_04: Absolutely acrobatic.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Anytime you get those guys back, it's it's a dub.
- 17:57SPEAKER_05: I love hearing, I'm loving loving hearing that it's confirmed, man.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: Just huge foundational pieces of veterancy to come back for year two with Joey.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: So that's that's awesome.
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: Um, Malik Dunlap and Ray Shad Williams, both your starting corners this year.
- 18:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, they have another year if they want it.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: Um, not sure what those guys are thinking.
- 18:17SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Malik Malik took a step.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: He took a huge step this year.
- 18:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, he didn't start out as a starter, eventually made his way to that starting uh corner position.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: Um, Ray Shad, I thought, was overall, uh, I think he wanted a little more from Ray Shad Williams this year.
- 18:35SPEAKER_04: I think he was kind of hyped up to be uh this kind of lockdown corner that was going to really take a leap.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, and you didn't really see that.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it was injury, if it was the system first year and the new defense.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, it could have been a number of things, but both of those guys have the intangibles, they're both six foot three, they're long arms, they're your your prototypical corner that you want.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: So I would love to have both those guys back for sure.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, you kind of saw it in the OU game that we still have some issues back there.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, Dylan Gabriel's not that good to be just dropping bombs on us like that.
- 19:06SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, no, it's it'll be great to have him back because it's just another year to develop them and hopefully they can actually take that step up that you're just saying.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, a few other guys that were more dept pieces than anything.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: Uh Tyreek Matthews, uh, because we're losing so much at the linebacker position with Krishan and um uh Kosei and uh those type of guys, Tyreek Matthews would be a good get to come back for next year.
- 19:29SPEAKER_04: Tyler Owens, uh, he was the Texas transfer.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: He played minimal here and there.
- 19:33SPEAKER_04: Uh he played a lot, I think, more towards the end of the season, uh, there in the secondary.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: But another one of those guys that just got the size.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: He's like 6'2.
- 19:40SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, he can stay with a lot of guys, he's super athletic.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: So would love to have him back.
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: Uh, Cam Watts, Cam White, Patrick Curley, those are you know guys that played on special teams.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, if they want to come back, great, awesome.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: It's good to have senior leadership.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: Um, really only one receiver, and that's Xavier White.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: Um, he's a senior, he could use one more year if he wanted to.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, he had some breakout games, uh, especially when Miles Price went down for those uh couple games mid-season.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: I think Xavier White really uh came through in the clutch.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: And uh Miles Cole, who is huge defensive lineman, um, came in, was playing a lot when Tyree got hurt.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: Um, he's he's Tyree's size, he's just not quite as skilled, uh, but uh another guy who you'd love to get back just from pure pure size and pure talent.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see like after having a year in a new system, whether they it was they've just figured it was a good decision to stay or or now thinking it's time to go.
- 20:41SPEAKER_05: So it'll be it'll be interesting to see how that plays out.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: You know, so far, like you've already posted only one player is officially to be able to decide the bail.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: Okay, too.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_04: Well, that was yeah, that was another guy from uh transfer portal.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: That was a freshman.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: So yeah, um, you know, we'll see.
- 20:56SPEAKER_04: Uh there is one more that I didn't mention because this is going to lead into the next conversation here, and that is uh Tyler Shuck.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: Uh started four games for the Red Raiders this year, uh, won all four of those games.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: Um, he's again, he's uh somehow seven and one as your Texas Tech starting quarterback, uh six and oh in games that he has played and completed.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: Um all right.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: What are your thoughts uh going into next year uh with the quarterbacks?
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, for some reason I was thinking this whole time that this was our last year with Tyler Shuck, even even if he had another year of eligibility, because I think because there was always this talk that this guy potentially had NFL look.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: And I was wondering maybe he'd come in, play one more year with us, and maybe get a flyer out in the NFL.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: Um, but now it's it's it's kind of a tough call because I know everyone probably the biggest discussion everybody's having about next season when it comes to the quarterbacks, and everyone is always quick.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: Say that we have a very deep quarterback room, and I think that maybe that quarterback room can begin to overflow now, and that there's true skill in this quarterback room, and all three of these guys could start at other colleges if they want to.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: And so the discussion kind of becomes who's gonna get more of the nod for looking into the the next season, right?
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: So, and obviously, if you're getting the nod, you're gonna stay, but if you're not, is it going to be or unless Joey somehow says I don't know who's the starting quarterback up until the uh the very end again, but I just can't see that happening again.
- 22:39SPEAKER_05: And uh I I it becomes a really complicated question.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: Um I it it's hard, it's hard for me to like fully analyze this because you're you're basically who I think should be number three is seven and one as a starter at Texas Tech.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: And uh Tyler Shuck, I think, is a talented guy.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: I think he's got a lot of skill.
- 23:06SPEAKER_04: I think he's got some poise to him.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: He made some he made some plays.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: He grew as a quarterback at Texas Tech because there were plays early on in those early games where you were playing it tight to Stephen F.
- 23:16SPEAKER_04: Austin, playing it tight to Florida International in the first half, where he was taking bad sacks, he was throwing a lot of interceptions, he wasn't making right decisions.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: He was one thing I noticed in these last couple games that Tyler Shuck has played is that he has gotten rid of the ball when he needs to get rid of the ball.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: He has been smart with it, he has uh hit some guys in the middle of the field.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: I mean, he threw some darts.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: Uh that that touchdown he threw to Jeran Bradley there in the OU game was a freaking dart.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, that was a it was a great play, and you saw what he can do as a quarterback.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: It's just can he be consistent?
- 23:54SPEAKER_04: Can he stay healthy?
- 23:55SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, is he too old?
- 23:57SPEAKER_04: And this decision is going to be the toughest, uh, I think for Joey Maguire.
- 24:03SPEAKER_04: And um, if I was Joey Maguire, Zach Gitley, I you know, I would, I would basically sit Tyler Shuck down and and tell him to transfer.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: That's what I would do.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, because and if he wants to compete for the job, you obviously you let him because you like those type of guys in your locker room.
- 24:21SPEAKER_04: You know, Tyler Shuck seems like a good dude, a good person, uh, good competitor for everybody, a lot, a leader, you know, in the locker room.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: I think that's something that we can all say about Tyler Shuck.
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, you can't risk Baron Morton transfer, in my opinion.
- 24:37SPEAKER_04: Um, I think he showed you some stuff this year in the in the few games that he played um that you just didn't see from the other two guys, um, in terms of I think he's the best for Kitley system.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: I think he's probably the most talented of all three of these guys, and he's the youngest.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: And you have multiple years with him as your starting quarterback.
- 24:57SPEAKER_04: And so I think that's where the decision is ultimately going to come to is hey, do you want to trade two or three years of Baron Morton for one year of Tyler Shuck here?
- 25:07SPEAKER_04: And uh I don't think I don't think you want to risk that.
- 25:10SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, in terms of quarterbacks, um I just I don't see a way, I don't see a reality where Tyler Shuck stays.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: I'm on an identical page with you on the Baron Morton choice.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: I think Barron Morton is your quarterback next year.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: I think Barron Morton's your quarterback for the next three years or so.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: Um, and and that's awesome.
- 25:32SPEAKER_05: It's great to have a quotation mark franchise quarterback to be running on uh with a full full head of steam into the future here.
- 25:41SPEAKER_05: Um, but I'm surprised that you you're taking the stance that uh you set him down and tell him transfer.
- 25:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, because I mean, with my head, it's just like I thought you were about to say you set him down and tell him that uh he has to fight for the job.
- 25:51SPEAKER_05: Like it that it's not given him.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: I think that's a guarantee that that's gonna happen.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: If he does say that, he's he if he like if he doesn't tell Tyler Shuck to transfer, he's gonna say, Hey, you it's not your job, man.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Like uh we're going in this with a healthy competition like we did last offseason.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, you saw all four quarterbacks this year, and you saw good stuff and you saw uh you know some bad stuff from these guys, and so uh I I don't know how you have an instant starter for sure uh after watching all four or all three of these quarterbacks this year.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely, and so I I I kind of feel like if that's the case, it's gonna be kind of a repeat in that, but at the same time, that defeats what I just said.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: I feel like you kind of have to start leaning into a quarterback as you move forward here, you know, because the foundation this was foundation year.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: This was year where you kind of try some new things, add some spices in, but now you gotta start, you know, you have a great year.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: Now you have to at least meet that next year, or people are gonna be really disappointed.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: So you have to start improving.
- 26:48SPEAKER_05: And I don't know if you improve as a program if you play this juggling thing with quarterbacks.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: I feel like you gotta start developing one and start riding with them, giving that confidence that you're the guy.
- 26:58SPEAKER_05: Obviously, he can lose at any point, but you know, that's how quarterbacks understand these things.
- 27:02SPEAKER_05: But okay, so we talked we talked about those two, and I think we're on the same exact page.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: Um but what about our Swiss Army knife, Mr.
- 27:11SPEAKER_05: Smith, who can apparently do it all and get the ball in the end zone multiple times in every possible way he can get a touchdown in every way, and obviously do it with such swag.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: I swear.
- 27:26SPEAKER_05: That guy anytime he's into the end zone, he's doing some pose that'll be posted everywhere.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, like the kid can do it all.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: Donovan Smith rules.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: I love Donovan Smith.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: I still love Donovan Smith.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: I wanted him to start at the beginning of the year.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: He had some bad games, he also played the toughest teams, granted.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: He had to go to Stillwater, or no, I'm sorry, that was Bournemouth.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: He had to go to Kansas State, he had to play Texas.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: I mean, he tight one with Houston.
- 27:55SPEAKER_04: He had a he had a tough go at it, and he didn't necessarily show it in that Kansas State game, but again, that's a good team.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: NC State, good team at the time.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: They had Devin Leary, they were rolling.
- 28:06SPEAKER_04: They, I think they won like 11 straight games at home when we went in there.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, Donovan Smith, I love that guy so much, and I see so much potential in him as a starting quarterback, not just a Swiss Army knife, but as a starting quarterback.
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: I think he can be really, really successful and potentially be an NFL guy in the future.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: He just really needs to clean up some certain things, he needs to clean up his decision making.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: Um, but towards the end of the season, they found the magic, uh, the magic touch there with throwing in Donovan Smith at the right time and you know running those trick plays and giving him the ball into the end zone in the red zone.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: It was it was beautiful to watch.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: And I was so anti against multiple quarterbacks playing, but they used it really well.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't see a reality that Donovan Smith wants to do that again, uh, wants to be this Swiss Army knife guy.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: And if he does, awesome.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: Let's go, please.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: Let's do it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: That would be great.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: Barron Morton will play, Donovan Smith will come in for certain packages in the red zone.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: I'm all for it if he wants to do that.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: But I don't see a reality where he wants to do that because he is a starting caliber quarterback and can win games for a power five team.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: And I firmly believe that he can be an NFL player one day.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: So I, you know, if you ride, maybe you maybe just go into next year and tell Barron Morton and Donovan Smith, hey dude, it's a competition between you two.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: Maybe Tyler Shug, if he decides he wants to do that too and have the same thing all over again, you accept it because either way, you have a solid starting quarterback next year.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: I think all three of these guys could win you games, like they did this year.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: All three of these guys won you games.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: Um, and so this sucks.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: It sucks and it's good.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: It sucks and it's good.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: It's the same, it's the same thing we had last offseason that we could potentially have this offseason, except I think I I don't think Tyler Shuck will be in the picture next year.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: There might be a quarterback controversy at Texas Tech University, but there's not a quarterback controversy on Talking Tech podcast.
- 30:13SPEAKER_05: It sounds like we we are on the same exact page about all of this.
- 30:19SPEAKER_05: And but for a while there, I mean, I whenever I remember you and I were uh sharing this over a couple of bread sodas, uh watching USA tie it against England.
- 30:28SPEAKER_05: That you know, I was like, I could picture both Donovan Smith and Tyler Shuck leaving and leaving us with a backup and a freshman like Jake Strong.
- 30:36SPEAKER_05: Like I didn't know if that was perhaps the destiny to unfold, but I would rather this Donovan reality come because you know, at least then you have a veteran quarterback as your backup, you know, having a tr having a green guy to you know to line up if your top dog goes down is not ideal, but obviously you want what's best for all these kids.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: And I wouldn't, I would not blame any of them for transferring unless you're Barron Morton, because you're supposed to be the golden boy at Texas Tech University.
- 31:02SPEAKER_05: So you better put it on.
- 31:03SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't I wouldn't blame Baron Morton for transferring if we decided to you know give Tyler Shuck that opportunity.
- 31:08SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't blame him because that would have been another year of him sitting where it's like cheese, man.
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: But um yeah, this is uh this is gonna be the toughest decision Joey's had to make while he's been at Texas Tech going into next year.
- 31:22SPEAKER_04: Um my prediction is that uh it's gonna be Morton and uh uh I uh Tyler Shuck's gonna transfer in.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: I think Donovan Smith will also transfer, and that's gonna make me so sad.
- 31:32SPEAKER_04: Um, and well, now I I don't think Jake Strong is gonna be a backup quarterback in that situation.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: I think you're gonna get a transfer from somewhere to be your backup QB.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: Hopefully.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: I don't uh yeah, and maybe I don't know.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: Maybe Jake Strong they believe in him a lot and think he they could throw him in as a true freshman, but um no, I think he would go for a veteran kind of backup quarterback at that point.
- 31:52SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, I guess that's my final prediction is that uh they ride with Morton and and both Chuck uh and Smith are gonna transfer.
- 32:01SPEAKER_05: Why are we bumming ourselves out here?
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: I mean, Tech Tech just concluded.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: It's not bad.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: It's not a it's not a bad thing.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: I would be depressed if Donovan Smith transfers because I like that guy.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: And I really think I think we're gonna see him at another school succeed, and it's gonna be heartbreaking, but you're also gonna understand because we have Baron Worton.
- 32:20SPEAKER_05: Just for love of God, don't go to a Big 12 school or arrival school.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: That's all we ask.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: That's that would that would stab me in the heart.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, then I hate them.
- 32:29SPEAKER_05: Then there's cub.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: Then then this teenager who just wants to play football is worse than criminal.
- 32:39SPEAKER_04: No, uh, what do you what do you think?
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 32:41SPEAKER_04: Morden and then the other two are gone.
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: Yes, I like I said, there's no co-quarterback controversy on talking tech.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: I'm a baron guy.
- 32:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, I just I think we all are kind of baron guys in the sense that like he is the chosen one.
- 32:52SPEAKER_04: So given that he's a freaking golden boy.
- 32:56SPEAKER_04: If any one of these guys starts for Texas Tech next year, I am not going to be mad.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: All right, I will be upset when guys transfer, and that's just the reality of what it is.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: It's the game.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, it's the game.
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: You know, people don't sit for three years anymore, they go and get another opportunity somewhere else, and that's not a bad thing.
- 33:12SPEAKER_04: It's it's you know, probably in their best interest as well.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: So look at the Columbi Magic and Marshall, you know, taking over what's they end up this year?
- 33:20SPEAKER_05: I know they beat Notre Dame.
- 33:21SPEAKER_05: I think it went six and six at the end of the day.
- 33:23SPEAKER_04: Um, I think I think Columbia got benched.
- 33:26SPEAKER_05: Oh, I want to say Mighty Fire fighting Irish.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: Our guy, Henry Columbi, I believe, got benched.
- 33:35SPEAKER_04: Let's see.
- 33:35SPEAKER_04: Oh, they finished off four straight wins.
- 33:37SPEAKER_04: Oh, but they lost, yeah.
- 33:39SPEAKER_04: It's not great, not a great season for for the thundering.
- 33:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, he did, yeah.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: He definitely got benched.
- 33:46SPEAKER_05: No, the only player to block us on Twitter.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: Yes, only players so far.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: Only players so far.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: We'll see.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: No, we don't like to.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: I don't know what I did.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: I don't know what I did with the Twitter account.
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: Why what okay?
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: I think I know what I did.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: I tweeted, I responded to somebody who we were talking about the Wells era, I think, after he got fired.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: And I was, or no, no, no, no.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: It was that thread that I put for uh basically showing all the quarterback injuries that we've had and all the all the percentages of starts we've had, a backup quarterback start for us.
- 34:25SPEAKER_04: And some guy was like, Well, we would have done better in 2020 if so and so didn't get hurt.
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: And I was like, dude, you're not gonna convince me that Henry Columbi was gonna was gonna be a difference maker for you if he started the whole year, and I think that's what happened.
- 34:42SPEAKER_05: Now I get it because you doubted his his magic, and I don't blame him.
- 34:46SPEAKER_05: I I say keep us blocked.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: Come on the podcast, Henry Columbi.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: Let's let's duke it up.
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: I'd love it.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Let's talk.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, that'd be great.
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: Um, no, uh Heisman Henry.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: Um, not not great, not a great year for for our guy.
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: All right, this is not a Marshall podcast, anyway.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: Do you want to make it a Marshall podcast?
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: It could be go herd, no, go heard, baby.
- 35:10SPEAKER_04: Overall thoughts on the season.
- 35:12SPEAKER_04: How happy are you with this year?
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: What stood out to you?
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, what do you what did you think of the year?
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, I think I think the biggest thing that sticks out to me is finally.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: I think that's a word I can finally say.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: Like, oh yeah, that's a way to repeat myself there.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: Um, it's finally.
- 35:28SPEAKER_05: It's the amount of seasons we've had where just winning was the biggest wish we could ever make on a star in any game.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: And now we're not in the basement anymore.
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: You know, we the the finishing ninth in the Big 12 over and over again was getting really old, really old.
- 35:45SPEAKER_05: And just so like every season felt like deja vu, and you know, the same problems kept popping up in a different ways.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's just it feels so good to have a team to believe in and just know that the future is going to be better, you know.
- 35:59SPEAKER_05: It has to like it has to get better.
- 36:01SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying that every single year uh Joey Maguire is gonna be try just adding a win on each time, but uh it's just at least you know the foundations are strong and that it's going up, it's not stagnating, and it's not going down.
- 36:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that was the worst part about Wells, is you just didn't see a good future, no matter what you didn't you didn't see it going anywhere, and and that was the case with Kingsbury.
- 36:26SPEAKER_04: We wanted it so badly for it to go somewhere, and it just never did.
- 36:30SPEAKER_04: And with this team, with this program, what did you do?
- 36:34SPEAKER_04: You got home wins.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: That's something we desperately wanted.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, was you you needed to win, you needed to make Lubbock a tough place to play.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: You needed to provide the home fans with wins and with fun games and with field rushes, and you did that.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: You injected life into the program.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: I think Joey McGuire is such a motivational guy, uh, not only with his players, but with the fan base.
- 36:57SPEAKER_04: He excites the fans, he gets them ready for football.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: We're getting out of this decade-long funk that we just went through of watching consistently uh underperforming teams and teams that didn't give a crap.
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: And this was not this team.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: This was a team that really gave a crap.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, you had a winning record in conference play, something you have not done since 2009.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: You are going to a solid bowl, whether that's the Texas Bowl, whether that's Cheesa Bowl, whatever, you're gonna play a good team and you are seven and five, and it's gonna be fun.
- 37:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, and it this may be the biggest thing, you're recruiting and much better than Wells, Kingsbury, all those guys, you are recruiting really good talent.
- 37:38SPEAKER_04: I mean, you have like a top 25 class right now, and it's almost signing day.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: So if you if you looked at Texas Tech on the second year at Matt Wells and you were like, Oh, are we gonna get a top 25 class?
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: There's no freaking way we're gonna get a top 25 class with Matt Wells.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: So, uh, and to be Joey McGuire and do that in one year is absolutely impressive.
- 37:56SPEAKER_04: Uh, and you beat the two SEC teams.
- 37:59SPEAKER_04: So, I I mean, what more can you ask?
- 38:01SPEAKER_05: And and I think that that's definitely why I kept saying it's it pointing to the sky whenever I said you can actually believe that you're going up is this recruiting class, and those things go together.
- 38:08SPEAKER_05: I mean, you need to recruit good players to have good teams.
- 38:10SPEAKER_05: Um, you can you can coach up guys all day long, but there's absolutely a natural talent to it as well.
- 38:16SPEAKER_05: Um, so if you get the best players on the best coaching staff, you good things are gonna happen.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: Alabama doesn't do it with you know, you know, finding diamonds in the rough with two stars.
- 38:26SPEAKER_05: They don't that's that's not really how they do it.
- 38:29SPEAKER_05: Um, but in I I think that's the reason why I was really excited to say that finally is you know, Kingsbury almost had it, or at least the idea of Kingsbury had it that you know, in college in college sports, the star is the coach, the star is your head coach, Jim, because in the sense that that's who it's always going to be.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: You know, obviously, when it Patrick Mahomes was here, that's all you could talk about.
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're talking about Kingsbury too.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: That's what I'm like saying, that's who you thought you wanted it to be.
- 38:55SPEAKER_05: But he's a character that you can put the double T on, and he can represent it for as long as he's at Texas Tech, you know, he's not gone in four years, so that's what I'm really excited about.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: I mean, I feel the same way about Mark Adams and Tim Tadlock, only this guy obviously this guy's way louder and way more charismatic.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: But you you get what you get what I'm saying.
- 39:15SPEAKER_05: Like he's a star and he's a star in Lubbock, and that's what we always wanted.
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: It wasn't Matt Wells, and just the idea of Kingsbury was it wasn't actually Kingsbury, so it's that's what's so great about Joey.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: Well, and it's a guy who genuinely loves where he's at, he genuinely enjoys and appreciates where he's at and where he's come from, and what he's willing to do and willing to fight for for the future of the program.
- 39:35SPEAKER_04: And I think that's important.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: You know, you never saw Matt Wells buy into the community, you never saw um Cliff Kingsbury, as much as he's great and we loved him as a player, he was never really the super involved guy in the community.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: And you know, you really thought Cliff was waiting for that next step to go to that next place, and uh, you know, different guys, different strokes for different folks.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: But Joey Maguire is just like if you painted a picture of the Texas Tech head coach, it's Joey Maguire.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: Like it's a guy who loves this place, wants to succeed so badly, also appreciates where he's come from and appreciates the people and the fans and everything like that.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: So um, I think this was a phenomenal first year for Joey.
- 40:17SPEAKER_04: Um, I think uh, you know, there's obviously some things to work on, um, but it's I think you ended up uh overachieving this year.
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: A hat tip to Kirby Hoke.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: He finally got all three in a row.
- 40:31SPEAKER_05: You know, we were very critical that yeah, he's got he's nailed, he's nailed baseball and he nailed basketball multiple times in a row.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: And now he's finally gotten football right.
- 40:44SPEAKER_05: Um, and obviously, you know, people we we can we can bomb next year.
- 40:48SPEAKER_05: People will be saying, like, well, that lasts, but no, I mean, I don't feel that way.
- 40:52SPEAKER_05: Um, I think that Joey obviously Joe McGuire is the future.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: So hats off to Kirby Hokka.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: And obviously, I think the win against OU felt really good for Kirby because I like you know, I've told you all this over and over again.
- 41:01SPEAKER_05: My theory was Brent Venables was supposed to be the head coach of Texas Tech instead of Matt Wells.
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: And I I I I bet it was a little sweet, uh, sweet little vengeance there on it on his old buddy there.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, old Brent Venables didn't coach himself a very good game against Texas Tech, so maybe we maybe it was for the best.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: Um hiring Jeff Levy wasn't exactly a superstar move, sir.
- 41:23SPEAKER_05: And and both both on the field and character-wise.
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: So yeah, you just talk about a POS of a person.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, and then and now he's not even doing well.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: It's like, okay, yeah, I hate that.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: And plus, he needs he he looks like he's out of a Halloween movie and needs to go back to uh whatever ghoul can be.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: He looks like an insane person, he's like a skeleton man who is uh constantly like giving you the joker face, and it's terrifying.
- 41:59SPEAKER_05: He he looks like a vampire, you know, like how the like the whole thing with vampires is if they don't feed, they start looking more like ghoulish.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: That's what he looks.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: He looks like a starved vampire.
- 42:09SPEAKER_05: These go back on the HUDs.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we've talked about this before off bod.
- 42:13SPEAKER_04: The OU coaches are ghouls, they're both they're they're both terrifying to look at.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: I like Warner Moser, but man, that guy's terrifying.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, you look at him, he's like a they both look like weirder versions of Willem Dafoe.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: This guy, go look up Warner Moser.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: He looks like a like a jacked version of Willem Dafoe.
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: It's it's I don't I don't get it.
- 42:33SPEAKER_04: I don't get it.
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: Look, I know glass houses and everything were ugly as hell, but like seriously, Halloween movie dudes, right?
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: They look like you should be casted in like a 1950s horror film.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just insane people, insane looking people, old school Wolfman.
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: We'll see.
- 42:50SPEAKER_04: Uh we'll see, Oklahoma.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: They're they're already out on Venables, so yes, the Sooner fans are in meltdown mode, my guy.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: It's pretty nice to see finally, especially with the way Lincoln Riley's going.
- 43:01SPEAKER_05: You know, Red Raider, beloved Red Raider, Lincoln Riley.
- 43:04SPEAKER_04: Beloved Red Raider will go down in the Texas Tech Hall of Fame, Lincoln Riley.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, man.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: That's it for football.
- 43:14SPEAKER_04: Um, I think we've talked about it enough.
- 43:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, great first season for Joey and the boys.
- 43:17SPEAKER_04: It's not done.
- 43:18SPEAKER_04: We can get eight wins.
- 43:19SPEAKER_04: We can get eight.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: We could get eight wins uh with this one.
- 43:22SPEAKER_04: I hope we get a good team.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: I have no idea on the bowl project projections.
- 43:26SPEAKER_04: I've heard a lot of cheese at bowl uh in Orlando.
- 43:29SPEAKER_04: That would be cool.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: Awesome.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think we would be playing an ACC team if that was the case.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: So look out for like Clemson, North Carolina, uh, Florida State potentially.
- 43:39SPEAKER_04: Um, could be cool.
- 43:41SPEAKER_04: Could be cool.
- 43:41SPEAKER_04: It'd be kind of cool, be kind of rad.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: Be be pretty neat.
- 43:46SPEAKER_04: Be pretty neat to beat one of those teams in the Cheese It Bowl.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: So uh let's move on.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about basketball.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: Um, opposite of what has been happening with football.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, basketball, a disappointing trip to Maui.
- 43:57SPEAKER_05: That's weird.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's that was a weird scene.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: That's what I just said.
- 44:01SPEAKER_04: That wasn't correct.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: The last 2008?
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: No.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: Disappointing trip to Maui.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: Um, I've you finally got tested um by some really good teams.
- 44:12SPEAKER_04: And granted, these teams were good.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: Like Creighton is a good, good team, like a top five, probably team in the country right now.
- 44:19SPEAKER_04: And they played like it.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: Um, you also played uh Ohio State, who is also very good.
- 44:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, they're a strong team, they have a lot of good players on that squad.
- 44:29SPEAKER_04: Um, and you destroyed a horrible Louisville team.
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: So, overall, uh, I would not say this trip was a success.
- 44:36SPEAKER_04: I think you saw a lot of flaws in this team, and uh, I just think you have a lot to build on.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I think you're seeing a lot of youth, you know, you're so or at least a lot of like unfamiliarity, you know, with with both each other and the system.
- 44:49SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, when you're finally going up against uh real competition, the cracks really start to break open.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: And you see as a coaching staff when you need to take care of what's mostly this what's more disappointed than anything is you know, obviously you lose.
- 45:02SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's guys, it's basketball.
- 45:04SPEAKER_05: Going in an undefeated season is not gonna happen.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: Um, you're going to lose.
- 45:08SPEAKER_05: It's just nature of the beasts.
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: Um, but I think what was disappointing is this was like your really your one few chances to actually pat up that tournament buffness.
- 45:19SPEAKER_05: I'm looking for the right words here.
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: Um, and he couldn't really do it.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: You weren't able to grab a sign a signature win TM on um before the the bit the the Big 12 season really gets rolling.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: So that's disappointing.
- 45:33SPEAKER_05: I know I I have no doubt in my mind we're gonna we're not gonna get this that we're gonna turn this around, but just just an all out show disappointing showing in Hall and Hawaii.
- 45:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean it's uh I put I put the thread on Twitter this morning.
- 45:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, this is what sucks about having a terrible non-conference schedule, and this is Texas Tech's own fault.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: They choose to do this every year, and I uh again I understand the reasoning for it.
- 45:55SPEAKER_04: I get scheduling a lot of bad teams in the non-conference so you can get your team uh you know ready for that 18-round fight that is the Big 12 conference play.
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: But man, when you lose those couple of challenges in the non-conference, your resume is nothing outside of the Big 12 right now.
- 46:14SPEAKER_04: You have one more chance at a quality win in non-conference play, and it's LSU, who's a middling SEC team at best.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: So I you got a horrible draw in the Big East challenge in in Georgetown, and then you're playing a bunch of no names, like you're playing Eastern Washington and Houston Christian, and all this crap.
- 46:32SPEAKER_04: It's like you mean Houston Baptist.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: No, no, it's no longer Houston Baptists.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: No, it's actually Houston Christian now.
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: Um this is it's a problem, and it was announced or reported today that the Big 12 SEC challenge is ending after this year, so there goes one of your guaranteed good games in the non-conference.
- 46:54SPEAKER_04: You need to do a better job of scheduling better non-conference opponents.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: You don't need to schedule Duke in Kentucky every year, it'd be great if you did, but I get it, those teams don't want to come to Lubbock, and you don't want to play neutral side games all the time.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: I understand, but schedule teams, power five teams, or even you know, uh middling G five teams that want to come play a home and home with you in Lubbock.
- 47:19SPEAKER_04: Like replacing Nichols State and Houston Christian with Oregon State, Minnesota is just so much better, and those are middling teams.
- 47:29SPEAKER_04: That those aren't teams that aren't going to be difficult to schedule, even if you have to play a neutral side game, it's so much better having those teams on your resume than having these friggin' 10 cupcakes that you have every single year at home that you blow out by 30.
- 47:43SPEAKER_04: Your team learns nothing about it, nobody in the committee cares uh on selection Sunday that you beat Nichols State by 50.
- 47:52SPEAKER_04: It's it's so pointless to me that you keep continuing to schedule these terrible teams and so many of them.
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: I'm fine with two or three, four even on the year, but you have like 15 non-conference games.
- 48:05SPEAKER_04: You don't have to schedule 12 terrible teams in the of those 15.
- 48:10SPEAKER_05: It really feels like the equivalent of scheduling multiple FCS teams in a football season.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: Um, it's like, what are we, an SEC football team or something?
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: Um, but um uh but I'm with you.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: Well, what it's we also what kind of sucks about these, and you I know you sort of touched on it is look, as a fan, the only reason why I'm excited to watch these games is because basketball's back.
- 48:33SPEAKER_05: Other than that, I kind of feel like I'm watching a rerun where I know we already went, you know.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: It's just there's there's really nothing to be excited about.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: It's just wow, look at us jump all over this high school level team.
- 48:46SPEAKER_05: Okay, that was that was just mean.
- 48:48SPEAKER_05: Look at us jump all over this team that is not of our powerhouse caliber.
- 48:52SPEAKER_04: It's not good.
- 48:53SPEAKER_04: You can tell they're not good, they're just not.
- 48:55SPEAKER_04: It's like it's Q4 games.
- 48:58SPEAKER_04: You're gaining nothing from playing these teams, just like you're gaining nothing from drawing Georgetown in the Big East challenge.
- 49:04SPEAKER_04: You got all these good teams in the big east, and then you get freaking Georgetown, it sucks.
- 49:09SPEAKER_04: Terrible, it sucks.
- 49:11SPEAKER_04: Um, and even I like the LSU, I guess LSU's a fine draw on most years.
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: Like LSU usually puts out a pretty decent basketball team, but you still want like an Alabama or Kentucky or you know, Auburn, one of these really good SEC teams, and you didn't get that this year.
- 49:26SPEAKER_04: And without the SEC challenge, hopeful, there's rumors that the Big Ten might potentially do a challenge with the Big 12, which would rule, be awesome, playing a Big Ten team every year.
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: But you have the Big East challenge, and then you have some years you're like luckily next year we're gonna be in like Battle for Atlantis, and this year we were in Maui.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: But if you don't win those three or four games against quality teams in the non-con, you have no quality wins outside of Big 12, and that sucks.
- 49:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you got your work cut out for you in the Big 12, and that's not an easy workload to get through.
- 49:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, we've fared very well these past few years in it, but it's an absolute buzzall, dude.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: And I I know it I love Mark Adams' death, but I don't expect us to just be top three a year in, year out, and have no issue um getting into the tournament because that's just an impossible task in this conference, so but I I'm with you, and I think we're just probably just echoing the way everyone else feels about it.
- 50:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: We're just frustrated with the results of Maui more than anything right now.
- 50:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I mean you win one and two, but you did you did play well.
- 50:28SPEAKER_04: It's not like you were terrible and you got blown out.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: You played really good teams and you played well.
- 50:33SPEAKER_04: The record sucks, but you did you blew out Louisville.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, Louisville's horrible, they're horrible, but uh like you played good against Creighton for the majority of that game.
- 50:43SPEAKER_04: You played well against Ohio State, and they broke broke away at the end.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: Um, there's some there's some serious uh flaws with this team.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, depth-wise, you need more from your bench.
- 50:55SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think it's really just the freshmen need to get it going and need to understand.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: But right now, what I saw from those three games in Maui, you're having Kevin O'Banner do way too much on offense.
- 51:07SPEAKER_04: He's not a guy who can create his own shot very well, and that's just not his game.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: He's a he's a shoot pick and pop, shoot the three, grab some, you know, grind down on the rebounds, put get some putbacks.
- 51:19SPEAKER_04: That's Kevin O'Banner's offensive game.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: Kevin O'Banner should never be taking somebody off the dribble.
- 51:24SPEAKER_04: He just should not.
- 51:25SPEAKER_04: He's not he's not good at it, and it's not what he needs to be doing.
- 51:28SPEAKER_04: He's good at so many different things, but that's not it.
- 51:31SPEAKER_04: So that part of it, they have way too much running through Kevin O'Banner on offense right now.
- 51:36SPEAKER_05: So I do you think that's is that more of a a Kevin frustration, like more or like kind of like feeling like we got it on the shoulders of a team captain guy?
- 51:45SPEAKER_05: No, it's not a I don't think it's a Kevin O'Banner, the other dudes.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's a Kevin O'Banner problem.
- 51:50SPEAKER_04: I think it's your team.
- 51:51SPEAKER_04: You're you have other guys on this team that are not stepping up and not doing what they need to do.
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: Uh most, and and I'll call out Jalen Tyson because I don't know if I'm expecting way too much out of a out of a sophomore, out of a guy who hasn't played a lot of college basketball, but you need more from him.
- 52:09SPEAKER_04: And I said it last week, I said it the week before.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: You need more from Jalen Tyson.
- 52:13SPEAKER_04: He needs to take 15, 16 shots a game.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: He just does.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: He's too talented, he's way too passive uh during these games, and I get it.
- 52:22SPEAKER_04: It takes a while to flow in this offense, it takes a while to get used to it, but you need to be a little more selfish.
- 52:27SPEAKER_04: And I don't normally say that.
- 52:28SPEAKER_04: I wouldn't say that if I didn't think he's that good.
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think Jalen Tyson is really, really good, and he needs to take more of an aggressive approach towards the game.
- 52:40SPEAKER_04: Defensively, he's fine.
- 52:41SPEAKER_04: Offensively is where we need him because Kevin O'Banner cannot be your main offensive piece.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: Davion Harman is great.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: I think he's shown some great stuff.
- 52:49SPEAKER_04: I think Bachos shown some great stuff.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: But if you're talking about just a one-on-one type scorer and a guy who who you need to go get a bucket in a clutch situation, you need a guy like Jalen Tyson.
- 52:59SPEAKER_04: And I want him, he just has not been aggressive enough for me.
- 53:02SPEAKER_05: Do you think it's like a uh the lights are really bright and he's just not used to it yet?
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: Kind of thing.
- 53:07SPEAKER_05: He's young side of the ball.
- 53:09SPEAKER_04: He's young.
- 53:10SPEAKER_04: Uh he uh I can see him kind of picking and choosing where he's going, but I've also seen him in situations where he wants to go one-on-one and he gets a little bit of space and then he holds it and he passes it off.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: It's like, dude, just shoot it, just shoot it.
- 53:24SPEAKER_04: Because honestly, you should going one-on-one with the guy is a really good weapon that we have.
- 53:30SPEAKER_04: And I just really like to see more of it.
- 53:33SPEAKER_04: Um, it's it's been a little disappointing watching him because I just know how good he can be.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, and it may just be me expecting too much out of him.
- 53:41SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure.
- 53:42SPEAKER_04: I feel like I've watched enough basketball to know when I see a good player and I I want him to be more aggressive.
- 53:49SPEAKER_05: That's right, ladies and gentlemen.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's that yearly time where we're gonna go.
- 53:54SPEAKER_05: The one thing we're complaining about with Tex Tech basketball is the ability to score.
- 53:58SPEAKER_05: This is the only thing you're allowed to complain about when it comes to Texas Tech basketball.
- 54:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the offense has been frustrating, but I I think two guys that have really shown out for Texas Tech to kind of spin it a little bit and put a little more positive tone on on this season so far.
- 54:13SPEAKER_04: Daniel Bacho was awesome in Maui.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: He was an all-tournament type player, he was like 15 points a game, nine rebounds, like two and a half blocks a game.
- 54:23SPEAKER_04: Daniel Bacho is a dude, man.
- 54:26SPEAKER_04: Like, he's not just this jokester that's running around, you know, doing crazy stuff anymore.
- 54:31SPEAKER_04: He is he's a legitimately great player.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: He's the literally the greatest basketball player.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: It's that Pacific sun glistening on his French skin.
- 54:43SPEAKER_05: He just absorbs it and just he's such a beautiful human.
- 54:47SPEAKER_05: And I don't know, I think I'm just falling apart.
- 54:49SPEAKER_05: Where are you going with this guy?
- 54:50SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 54:51SPEAKER_04: So, anyways, no, uh when he I really like when he got hit in the face, he looked like Rambo out there.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: It was crazy when he had blood rushing out his face.
- 55:01SPEAKER_04: I think it was the uh I think it was the Louisville game.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: Not Rocky looked like Rambo, Rambo, all the a badass movie character.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: That's what he looked like.
- 55:11SPEAKER_04: Daniel Boccio.
- 55:13SPEAKER_04: Daniel Bach's rules.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 55:16SPEAKER_05: This Daniel Boccio conversations all over the place.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: Daniel just like him.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: Boccio 3.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: Daniel Bachho is him.
- 55:26SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 55:29SPEAKER_04: Davion Harmon has also been good.
- 55:31SPEAKER_04: I I think he's a guy that's shown uh that he can go get a bucket when you need him to.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: Um, and uh you don't really want him to a lot of the time.
- 55:39SPEAKER_04: Like you don't you shouldn't have him going one-on-one as much as you have him going one-on-one, but he has shown you he can do that, and he can finish at the rim over these taller defenders.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: Um, he can shoot the ball really well.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: I'm excited about Davion Harmon.
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: I thought Pop played really well on Maui as well, um, just showing you that dude's bucket, like we said.
- 55:59SPEAKER_04: Great shooter.
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: Showed a little finishing ability around the rim as well.
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: Uh, still uh kind of struggling with like fast breaks and um, you know, finding the right guy.
- 56:09SPEAKER_04: But uh I thought him and Bacho developed a really good pick and roll game uh where he found Bacho a lot in the uh for you know dunks in the lane and everything like that.
- 56:17SPEAKER_04: So uh I thought Pop took a step.
- 56:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I also just really like the energy both those two that you mentioned bring to the court as well.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: Like they they really do bring a ferocity to it, they bring some teeth to an uh whenever the you know to the offense, at least with the with with uh with the aggression.
- 56:33SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, no, it perfectly put there.
- 56:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, I think you uh I said earlier, you need to find more from your bench.
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: Um, you're not uh you're not really getting consistent minutes from a lot of people.
- 56:46SPEAKER_04: I think KJ Allen's played good here and there.
- 56:49SPEAKER_04: Um, we've seen uh uh Robert Jennings actually play pretty well off the bench.
- 56:54SPEAKER_04: I think Lamar Washington had a pretty good game.
- 56:56SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh what I the two guys that I want to see more and and grind out a roll for them, mostly because of their height and their length and their uh ability is Kerwin Walden and Elijah Fisher.
- 57:10SPEAKER_04: I think need to be either your best two guys off the bench or in the eight-man rotation because first off, they provide you uh they're both six, seven and up.
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: They're both really long and athletic.
- 57:24SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Kerwin can shoot the heck out of the ball.
- 57:27SPEAKER_04: Um, and Elijah Fisher is just uh one of the most athletic players you have on your team.
- 57:32SPEAKER_04: So defensively, if he gets it, if it starts clicking with him, I think Elijah can be a real guy for you this year and and Kerwin as well.
- 57:39SPEAKER_04: I'd like to I'd like to see Kerwin get a little more aggressive when he's in there and and shoot the ball a little more.
- 57:43SPEAKER_05: Look, the good news is we're still at the very beginning of the season.
- 57:46SPEAKER_05: So these guys are obviously still filling in their shoes.
- 57:50SPEAKER_05: So um I'm looking forward to see how they develop.
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: Hopefully, you know, they obviously the coaching staff is recognizing these same things.
- 57:56SPEAKER_05: So hopefully this is what they're developing on.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: Uh no, that's what they are developing on.
- 57:59SPEAKER_05: So hopefully we just see the the steps forward here from me now.
- 58:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and because of the scheduling uh you have this year, you have a lot of tune-up games before Big 12 play starts.
- 58:10SPEAKER_04: Um, I think you have like six or seven before you play TCU.
- 58:14SPEAKER_04: Um and TC who TC who um Georgetown's next actually in the Big East Challenge.
- 58:21SPEAKER_04: Um, a team that I believe is one and four on the year.
- 58:25SPEAKER_04: Oh, good team.
- 58:26SPEAKER_04: Uh they're so bad.
- 58:28SPEAKER_05: This is the this is this is the Mac game.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: This is the Mac team.
- 58:32SPEAKER_04: This I I am so upset.
- 58:35SPEAKER_04: Everybody was so like thrilled when we got Georgetown and when they announced the the who we were playing in that tournament.
- 58:44SPEAKER_04: Guys, Georgetown went winless in conference last year, they were horrible, and they're horrible again this year.
- 58:52SPEAKER_04: They have lost they okay, first game overtime against Coppin State.
- 58:56SPEAKER_04: Uh then they beat Green Bay, they lost to Northwestern, they lost to LMU.
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: Who is that?
- 59:04SPEAKER_04: I don't know who that is.
- 59:05SPEAKER_04: Louisiana Monroe, maybe no, it no, it's like who is oh Loyola Maramount.
- 59:11SPEAKER_04: They lost to Loyola Marymount, they barely beat LaSalle, they lost to American University this year.
- 59:18SPEAKER_04: Have you ever heard of American University?
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: Sounds like an online university.
- 59:22SPEAKER_04: It sounds like an online it's yes, this is uh this is because it's America's university anywhere New Hampshire University that you're playing.
- 59:30SPEAKER_04: They barely beat UNBC.
- 59:32SPEAKER_04: This is not a good team, and we should beat them by 50.
- 59:36SPEAKER_04: Um, hey, I'd enjoy that.
- 59:38SPEAKER_04: I don't care that Patrick Ewing is coming to Lubbock.
- 59:40SPEAKER_04: This is not a big deal.
- 59:42SPEAKER_04: This is the worst team in the Big East, and we drew them in the Big East challenge.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: It sucks.
- 59:47SPEAKER_04: We can't ever get a good opponent in this friggin' challenge.
- 59:50SPEAKER_04: Let's ruin it then.
- 59:51SPEAKER_04: Let's just blow them out.
- 59:53SPEAKER_04: I hope so.
- 59:54SPEAKER_04: I hope we do.
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: I hope we get mad after Maui and we blow him out.
- 59:58SPEAKER_04: Um, but that's all I had on basketball.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_04: A lot of complaining.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, we've gone through a lot of bad games.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_04: Um, or well, I should uh two bad games uh against quality teams.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm probably overreacting a little bit.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_04: We have a lot of get right games ahead.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, still excited for this team, still think they can accomplish a lot.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_04: Um, but we need some guys to step up and we need our guy Dawes back, our guy Fardos.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_04: Once he gets back, it's it's it's gonna be good.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna lie, I get a little upset whenever they use him in like promotional material.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's like thanks for hyping me up or nothing.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: Okay, thanks.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_05: Thanks for getting me really excited to see this.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: Appreciate it.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I he could have my foot, though it would probably be very disproportionate to his body.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_05: He would not be able to run very well.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_05: It'd probably be like being on a peg leg, but it's he can have it if it's needed.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_04: If it's needed, oh, I think Beans has already given up.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_04: Coach Beans has already given up his foot.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_05: Maybe he has a larger shoe size than mine.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_05: Um I run like a 10, about like about a 10 in most shoes.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_05: You have an abnormally small feet.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: That's not that's a 10, isn't small.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_04: No, it's not, but you have small hands, you have small feet for being six feet tall.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_04: All right, on a good day.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_04: See, I gave you that I gave you that little extra inch, man.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_04: You're good.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_04: Thanks, dude.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_04: I appreciate it.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_05: That's why you're a friendo.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_04: Did you have anything else?
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: Nah, dude.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: I think we can end it on my feet size.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_04: Alright, man.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: No, we didn't do.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: Crap.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: I can't believe it.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_04: We didn't do it.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: That's that's that's shitty.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_04: Now we're gonna do something that we always do that we have forgot, I think, one time earlier this year, but we're not gonna forget it today because I just remembered.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_04: We need to play the song.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_04: Play please play the song.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_04: Please do that.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_04: We're playing the song.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you, run through the name with a fury of Texas win.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_06: Red Raider coming at you.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_06: What a beautiful time.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech Red Raiders right, and that's my song of the week, Steven.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_04: What a sweet victory it was.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_04: Um speaking of songs, let's finish her off here with some songs of the week.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_04: Go ahead, buddy.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_05: All right, you know what?
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, with this one, I'm gonna go a little more mainstream Texas country.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's he's really you know made a staple for himself in Nashville.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_05: I've actually done his song one of his songs before.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go off go one of his one of his big new singles with Parker McCollum with Handle on You.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_05: I think it's a really cleverly written song.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_05: I think uh there's a lot of really funny parts in it.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_05: You know, not so funny, but like well written.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_05: Um, handle on you, Parker McCollum.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_04: Very nice.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_04: Parker Mac always some jams.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_05: Parker P P Mac.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_05: That's his stage name, actually.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_05: That's what they call the LSU.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_05: That's what they call them.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_04: They call them the P Mac.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_04: That is that is the that's what they call the LSU basketball arena.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_04: It's the Pete Meravich Center, they call it the P Mac.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_05: Well, that's that's the the Parker McCollum, and I totally just made that up.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_04: We're gonna be at the PMAC and January 28th when Texas Tech takes on the LSU Tigers in basketball.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be great.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_04: Everybody come and join.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_04: Come and join.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_04: We'll show you the we'll show you the places here in VM.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_04: Have some overpriced beers and meet some crazy Cajuns.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be great.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_04: Um, my song of the week, I've been listening to a lot of uh 2000's country as of lately.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm gonna do this one.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_04: It's just it's your classic jam, uh, nice little love song, but also uh kind of a fun song.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_04: It is Farmer's Daughter by Rodney Atkins.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_02: Be on the tractor, she'd be on my mind with that sun beating down on his back of mine.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_02: It just went it couldn't get no hotter.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_02: I fell in love with the farmer's daughter.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_04: Um, named my first car after Rodney Atkins.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_04: And uh, this is just it's a good song.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_04: It's a classic.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_04: It's it's just something that came on the playlist, and I was like, damn, that's the game of the week.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_05: Were we really listening to this song when we christened Rodney Rodney?
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_05: Because I know we think Rodney Rodney together.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, they were like, well, I was like, what's the name of your car by the way?
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_05: And you're like, it's you know what?
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_05: It's Rodney.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_04: It's Rodney.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_04: It looked like it was it was a 96 forerunner, it looked like a Rodney.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: It was a good name.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_05: I missed that car.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: That was a great ride, dude.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_04: It was good, good first car for sure.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_05: A great tune, dude.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_05: I I I'm never mad when that comes on terrestrial radio.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_04: Good jam.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_04: But all right, brother, if you have nothing else, we can end it off right here uh with some plugs, like we always do.
