Transcript
- 0:03It's a starting a sporting weekend.
- 0:05Stay tuned for an ice hockey special.
- 0:16Welcome. To PCR Sports.
- 0:18Good evening and welcome to the PCR Sports Show.
- 0:21We're here with you every Friday, six to seven.
- 0:23Myself, Dipham and Nilesh this evening and we've got some
- 0:26wonderful guests in the studio with us.
- 0:28Laura Brooks from the Peterborough Phantoms women's
- 0:30side and Scott Lambie from the Peterborough Phantoms Juniors
- 0:34amongst other things as well as you'll find out in a short while
- 0:37there, so do stay tuned for an ice hockey special.
- 0:40But first, as always, let's cover off this evening's
- 0:42headlines. And yeah, she has those for us
- 0:45this evening. Hi, Neil.
- 0:45How are you? Yeah.
- 0:46All good. Thank you.
- 0:47Yeah. Been a good week for Posh, so
- 0:48I'm happy Bunny this early has been, hasn't it?
- 0:50Indeed, right. Let's cover off firm some of the
- 0:53other sports happening in the city though.
- 0:54First and foremost, and we'll start with athletics.
- 0:57Peterborough and Nene Valley. A C's Kai Chilvers missed the
- 1:00final race of the series at Fairy Meadows, having already
- 1:04won the Peterborough 5K Grand Prix title.
- 1:07Dave Hudson of Hunts A/C won the race in 15 minutes 17 seconds.
- 1:12Ahead of Andrew Jakeman from March A/C and Aiden Lyden from
- 1:16Hunts A/C who both recorded a time of 1520.
- 1:20Lucy Maps of Hunts A/C has completely dominated the Ladies
- 1:25series and ran a massive PB on the fast course, clocking a time
- 1:28of 16 minutes and 51 seconds to win by over one minute 1 1/2
- 1:34minutes. Marcelo Cracova of Hunts A/C was
- 1:38runner up in 1828 with Stanford Strider Hannah rounds third in
- 1:421853 and to continue Hunts A C's domination.
- 1:46Milo Gray has been too hot to handle all summer in the junior
- 1:493K races and pulled off another convincing win when he crossed
- 1:53the finishing line in 9 minutes 33 seconds.
- 1:57Hunts A/C runners took the top four places.
- 2:00Esme Lyden, the sister of the 3rd place finisher in the Senior
- 2:03race, made it an even better day for Hunts A.
- 2:06As she was the First Lady home with a time of 10 minutes and 47
- 2:10seconds, Bushfield jogger Brian Cawley's finished fourth in the
- 2:14sleeve at 10K. The Autumn man was first in his
- 2:18over 45 age group with a time of 3510 in Speedway and sadly
- 2:24Peterborough Panthers dismal season continued with their 16th
- 2:27defeat last night, this time succumbing to a 4842 defeat to
- 2:32Sheffield Tigers. The only shining light of last
- 2:35night's meeting was Chris Bomber Harris, who scored sixteen
- 2:38points. Panthers do battle with the
- 2:41Tigers again at the East of England Arena for the first time
- 2:44this season on Monday, which is the 21st with with the tapes up
- 2:49at 7:30. That's the second leg of their
- 2:52round one tie which saw Sheffield build up as 3723 lead
- 2:57before rain halted proceedings after 10 races at Sheffield last
- 3:01month. In cricket, the top two in the
- 3:05North Hunts Premier Division served up a classic contest at
- 3:08Milton Rd. on Saturday. The game between Andal Town and
- 3:11Brig Stock featured 2 superb centuries and a brilliant
- 3:14finish, with the visitors taking a firm grip on the title race
- 3:18after sneaking home by 1 wicket, it looked like the competitions.
- 3:22Top All rounder Craig sorry Connor Craig had seized the
- 3:26initiative for Andal by cracking a wonderful 138 to lead his side
- 3:30to imposing 50 over score of 312 for 9:00.
- 3:35But Andal Town hadn't reckoned on the aggressive brilliance of
- 3:38city based former Peterborough Town player Mohammed Saif, who
- 3:42scored 173 from just 121 balls to put Brig stock in the driving
- 3:47seat. As a result, Brigstock are now
- 3:5013 points clear of reigning champions finding at the top,
- 3:53with Aundel, who haven't won any of their last four completed
- 3:56games, a further five points behind in 3rd Peterborough, Town
- 4:01of 4th, 35 points of top spot. But they do have the top three
- 4:05still to play where they finish the league season with games at
- 4:08Brigstock, travels to bottom side Old Northamptonians and
- 4:13town visits an improving Kismbury temperance.
- 4:17Briggstock are at home to Desborough with Findin at mid
- 4:20table, Williston in the Lynx Premier League market deepen
- 4:24were beaten by sleef, were beaten by Sleefford by 5
- 4:27wickets. Deepings batting could only
- 4:29muster 123 with Sleefford knocking off the runs in just 20
- 4:34overs. Bourne also suffered A dismal
- 4:37day with the bat 121 all out, which was easily reached by
- 4:41Grantham with the loss of only two wickets inside 19 overs.
- 4:45This weekend market Deeping travel to Grantham with Bourne
- 4:48heading to Woodall Spa. Bourne's tilt at a hat trick of
- 4:51titles took a knock as they were beaten by 25 runs by leaders
- 4:56Linden, Peter Sports and football.
- 5:00Peter Sports picked up a point at former manager Jimmy Jimmy
- 5:04Dean's new club Scunthorpe United last Saturday and were
- 5:07indebted to a fine penalty save from Peter Crook.
- 5:11The turbines goal came from new summer signing Ben folks and on
- 5:16Tuesday evening they made the trip to Alfreton and suffered
- 5:19late heartache after considering a late winner to lose 21.
- 5:24The sports goal came from Jordan Nicholson.
- 5:27Sports are back in action this weekend at home at Pym's Park to
- 5:314th placed Spennymore Town and those are your sporting
- 5:35headlines this week. Thank you.
- 5:36Lots going on. Obviously started the football
- 5:39season as well and got to give Posh a mention because it's been
- 5:43a near perfect start for them, isn't it really?
- 5:44Yeah, can't complain whatsoever. I'm sure all Posh fans are happy
- 5:47with the results and hopefully the performances that have come
- 5:52from them as well. Could win beating Charlton team
- 5:56that strengthened well over the summer last week.
- 5:57One nil hex Capriano with that goal on this on the strike of
- 6:01half time And then. Tuesday night traveled up to
- 6:05Barnsley who were in the playoff final last weekend last weekend
- 6:08last summer. So again they had a point to
- 6:12prove and Posh came away with A31 win after being one nil
- 6:15down. So yeah, really good
- 6:16performance. It seems like the posh's
- 6:18performances and the cohesion of the team is getting better with
- 6:20every game as well, isn't it? Yeah, that was definitely to be
- 6:23seen on Tuesday night. Disjointed, perhaps, against
- 6:26reading Swindon and Charlton, but certainly a lot more things
- 6:30clicked into place. By no stretch of the imagination
- 6:34was it perfect, and I don't think you'll ever get perfection
- 6:36for 90 minutes in a game of football.
- 6:38But certainly Tuesday night the players clicked and showed a
- 6:43good test of their character after being one nil down after
- 6:4650 odd minutes and to come back with three unanswered goals.
- 6:49So, yeah, really encouraging on Tuesday night, absolutely.
- 6:51And personally, when I've been listening to the commentary,
- 6:53obviously now we broadcast the commentaries 3 posh plus, as you
- 6:56all know, I think the player, one of the players that seems to
- 7:00impress me most is is the new goalkeeper, Bilakovic.
- 7:03And he's he's, he could turn out to be one of the best
- 7:07poshkeepers they've had for many years.
- 7:08Yeah, early days and I know social media certainly getting
- 7:12carried away. One or two hopefully are keeping
- 7:14their calm heads and I'm probably one of them.
- 7:16He's yeah, he's played really well in the opening weeks of the
- 7:18season, made some point blank saves.
- 7:21He's been commanding in his box and.
- 7:25In fairness to him, he's yeah, deserved the plaudits that he's
- 7:27had so far, certainly joining a new club.
- 7:29And it's good that he's a permanent signing of ours as
- 7:32well and not a Loney exactly. And he's been rewarded with an
- 7:34under 30. Under 23.
- 7:36Yeah. Call up for his national side,
- 7:37Yeah. For Australia.
- 7:38So yeah, that's great news for him, perhaps not great news for
- 7:42Posh. They'll probably miss the
- 7:44Cheltenham at home game. I think is the September 11th
- 7:47that you'll probably miss now, which is obviously a frustration
- 7:50from a Posh perspective. But yeah, all credit to him that
- 7:53he's being called up and he's certainly on Australia's radar.
- 7:56Absolutely. And then looking ahead to
- 7:58tomorrow's massive game, regional Derby, Northampton
- 8:01Town. Yes indeed.
- 8:03Doesn't get a lot bigger than that, no.
- 8:04Maybe one other game will, but that's.
- 8:06Yeah, but again, that depends on who you ask and that's very
- 8:09generational. Again, you know, the younger
- 8:11fans perhaps look at Cambridge as the rivals and perhaps the
- 8:15older age group looks at Northampton and then you've also
- 8:18got Lincoln as well this season. So yeah, massive game tomorrow.
- 8:21I don't think it matters how we perform as long as we come away
- 8:24from there with three points tomorrow and it's again about
- 8:26playing the football, not the matches, not the opponent, so to
- 8:28speak. As in, not the occasion.
- 8:30Play the match, not the occasion.
- 8:31Yeah, let the fans worry about the occasion itself and
- 8:34hopefully the the squad that Darren puts out tomorrow and
- 8:37certainly the 11:00 that will be starting, we'll hopefully, yeah,
- 8:42worry about the game. Shall we stay on the pitch and
- 8:45let the fans worry about the off the pitch stuff?
- 8:46Absolutely. And as always, so we'll have the
- 8:49commentary of Chris Dowser and obviously our very own Elesh
- 8:51Patel from Posh, plus live on the show tomorrow starting at
- 8:552:00 PM with PCR Sports Special Rights.
- 8:57Let's take a short break now. We'll be back talking about ice

- 10:47Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show, coming to you live every
- 10:50Friday, six to seven with myself, Dipham and new lecture.
- 10:54We're here for the local and regional, sporting, whatever
- 10:58clubs, people, individuals. And tonight is no difference at
- 11:01all. We've got from Peter of Phantoms
- 11:03like Ice Hockey club. We've got Laura Brooks from the
- 11:05women's side and Scott Lambie from The Phantoms Juniors.
- 11:10Good evening, both of you. Scott, how are you?
- 11:12Good evening. Yeah, very well.
- 11:13Thank you. Good, good.
- 11:14Laura. How are you?
- 11:15I'm. Well as well.
- 11:16Thank you. Good, good.
- 11:17Before we continue with Scott, I know we've got a lot to talk
- 11:19about. Laura, just wanted to say one
- 11:21thing to you. That's for you.
- 11:40Laura Brooks, happy birthday to you.
- 11:42Thank you. Much appreciated.
- 11:43I remembered from our conversation yesterday in prep
- 11:45for this show, and you're obviously out celebrating after
- 11:48this. Yes, yeah.
- 11:48Going for an ice meal, been and done go out today.
- 11:50So yeah, lots of activities. Not on the ice today though.
- 11:53That's OK. That's all right.
- 11:54So, well, good. Good of you to join us and thank
- 11:56you. Obviously on your birthday.
- 11:57So brilliant. Right, Scott, let's come back to
- 12:00you. You're from the junior side of
- 12:04the club, but I did read off your e-mail signature.
- 12:07You've got some multiple roles. You are you are Phantom's
- 12:12Registration Secretary, the Under 10s and Under Twelves
- 12:15Manager, Head of Hockey Excellence and the Club Chair.
- 12:18Yes, correct. I'm glad I got that right.
- 12:21Chair new this year. Yeah.
- 12:23Wow. So let's start with some of
- 12:25those roles and obviously I guess you you're on here
- 12:29representing Phantom's junior, so I just, I would like to guess
- 12:33under 10s under twelves is is probably one of your most
- 12:35focused areas of what you do it. Is very focused, especially like
- 12:38we were discussing earlier COVID hit.
- 12:42We lost numbers from the club for various reasons but we're
- 12:45just building that back up at the bottom end now, so 34 of my
- 12:50last count of under 10s and we've got a main task of
- 12:54building up to 5050 players this year.
- 12:57So just to try and get two teams working through the Academy at
- 13:00all age groups again, yes, I must.
- 13:03I think we were talking about it before we came on the air
- 13:05earlier, weren't we? That COVID has hit a lot of
- 13:08clubs. Certainly it's sort of what
- 13:11you'd probably term grassroots level or that kind of
- 13:14development area and you know we might see a knock on effect of
- 13:17that in terms of missing development opportunities for
- 13:20younger and up and coming players or participants in any
- 13:22sport now. Yeah, definitely.
- 13:24The governing body, the BIHI have recognized this fact as
- 13:27well and they're trying to lay on additional development camps
- 13:31for that age group that were missing out on their hockey due
- 13:34to COVID. Yeah.
- 13:35So, so hopefully obviously things can work out and and and
- 13:39it'll be be okay, but it's something to obviously be
- 13:41concerned about and to focus on, isn't it to to try and overcome
- 13:44it. So, OK, so going back to in
- 13:47terms of your role, your manager of the under 10s and under
- 13:49twelves, So what does that entail in what are your, what
- 13:53are your sort of daytoday duties?
- 13:55I wear hearing aids for a reason.
- 13:58It's very loud in them changing rooms, especially the under 10s.
- 14:02But yeah, so I'm back to under 10s this year.
- 14:05In my first year I was under 10s.
- 14:06Manager went to under twelves with my.
- 14:09I followed my child through the age groups but.
- 14:14General day-to-day stuff is arranging away games, home
- 14:17games. I get the privilege of taking a
- 14:20kit home and washing that. I've got a bit of an OCD where I
- 14:24have to hang it out, especially on the on the washing line in a
- 14:28particular order which my wife doesn't like, but the kits love
- 14:33it. Is that number order or what's
- 14:34the ousty order? I'm curious now.
- 14:36It's logo facing and then it has to be a number, but we've got a
- 14:40line on our jersey and that has to be.
- 14:43You folded over the line and pegged.
- 14:45Yeah, fantastic. Yeah, bit of an OCD.
- 14:48No, that's fine. That's for sport.
- 14:50I'll tell you what, sports part. People who play sport, and I've
- 14:52been the same in the past, you're full of I OCD and sort of
- 14:56superstitious. Yeah, I think I'll put on, you
- 14:59know, playing cricket and I have to put my left pad on first
- 15:01before my right, for example. So, and I'm sure you get that
- 15:04when you've played the game as well, that's.
- 15:06It right. Skate first, yeah.
- 15:08Yeah. So completely with you on that,
- 15:11yeah. So the other, yeah, the other
- 15:13rolls under 10s especially, is making sure the kits safe and
- 15:16secure because a lot of the kids, you know, we range from
- 15:19four years to 10 under 10s level and they can't get themselves
- 15:24up. So we just make sure they're
- 15:25safe before they go on the ice. Laces, yeah, I've got lever
- 15:29hands now from doing shit boot laces up constantly.
- 15:35Yeah, so. So it's basically looking after
- 15:37getting them prepped and ready to to play effectively.
- 15:39So do you get involved in any of the coaching and that's I am an
- 15:43assistant coach. I passed my course couple of
- 15:46months back. I was always a helper on the
- 15:49ice, just clearing out the Nets just to make sure that the
- 15:51drills kept flowing properly just so the kids didn't have any
- 15:55standing around time just to keep it flowing.
- 15:58But yeah, coaching wise, I leave the main coaching to the head
- 16:01coaches, you know, their ex players, etcetera, etcetera,
- 16:04but. I help out and Do you play
- 16:08yourself or have you played yourself?
- 16:09I do play myself. I've been skating for around a
- 16:13year and that was purely because I was trying to tell my kids,
- 16:18you know, what the best way was. And their basic answer was,
- 16:22well, you don't play, so how do you know?
- 16:26So I thought, yeah, I'd best get on the ice and try and learn
- 16:28myself, yeah. Yeah, around about 1218 months
- 16:32ago I I started to try and play and it's still a case of trying
- 16:36to play. It's a very hard sport, yeah, I
- 16:39can imagine because when we've had previous representatives
- 16:41from the club it's, you know, if you want to play cricket, for
- 16:44example, then you're playing cricket.
- 16:46In terms of it's a sport, football is a sport.
- 16:48You play football, but with ice hockey you've got to learn to
- 16:51play hockey as well as learn to skate, haven't you?
- 16:53That's kind of two disciplines you have to master to to play
- 16:56one sport effectively. Yeah, I think at the younger age
- 17:00group, it's a case of when they've got a stick and park in
- 17:03front of them, they forget what their feet are doing.
- 17:07But when you're 6 foot two, I do worry what my feet are doing
- 17:10because if they go from underneath me.
- 17:12Oh, we bum be on ice. Bum be on ice tonight.
- 17:15Yeah. Yes, kids.
- 17:17Have got No Fear? No, no, of course, of course.
- 17:20So obviously got under 10s and under twelves.
- 17:22Is that the only age groups that are in the junior section?
- 17:25No. So we got under 10s, twelves,
- 17:27under fourteens, sixteens and eighteens, right.
- 17:29OK. And what's the reason for sort
- 17:31of skipping years if you know, I mean is it because it gives
- 17:33A-Team a task to develop over 2 years period or how's that?
- 17:37Yeah, I don't know the real reason.
- 17:39No, I know it changed a few years ago because it used to be
- 17:42nines. It used to be odd numbers,
- 17:44nines, elevens, thirteens. But they've changed it up to the
- 17:48ICD. Went to even numbers, yeah.
- 17:50And I I think it's because it's, you know, it's not a wide sport
- 17:55across the country. In terms of participation
- 17:57numbers, so you need to have those bigger age groups, I guess
- 18:00in that way instead of 1011 and 12, you'd have smaller numbers
- 18:04and then you might as group them together and they can develop
- 18:07together as well through the age groups then, I guess.
- 18:08Yeah, which was. Especially the under 12, you
- 18:10know we have to I-17 players in total at least we have to go
- 18:16with that bench, so. If we just stay at the age
- 18:19group, we wouldn't reach that and no club would.
- 18:22To be fair, yeah, and at junior level, is it mixed gender hockey
- 18:26or is it still split into male, female?
- 18:28Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely. And then what's the what's the
- 18:31kind of program or the pathway for them heading towards adult
- 18:34hockey and then what how's that opportunity then come along
- 18:36their way? So in general, if any of the
- 18:39children players show dedication, hard work, they've
- 18:43got good, good chance of making seniors hockey.
- 18:47This year in particular, we've got 6/6 juniors that are all
- 18:51playing senior ice hockey, whether it's with Phantoms 2 or
- 18:54Phantoms 1. Yep.
- 18:57And then obviously we've got the English National GB and we have
- 19:04showcase events, which is like your trials for England.
- 19:08So I think yeah, we took thirteen players to showcase.
- 19:12From that 10 was selected for England.
- 19:15And we had free GB selections as well, all from the Paper Club.
- 19:19So there's role models effectively as they've gone on
- 19:21through the age groups, there's role models that the younger
- 19:24kids can aspire to be as well. And know there's that career
- 19:28progression is, so to speak, whether you're in the men's side
- 19:30or even the women's side as well.
- 19:31And you've got that pathway for when eventually it does split
- 19:35that. You know, there's opportunities
- 19:37for boys and girls to be playing hockey into their adulthood as
- 19:40well. Yeah obviously with the girls
- 19:42they obviously would go on to Laura's side of things and but
- 19:46they they can stay in the juniors up until the under
- 19:48eighteens group so and go on full time to women's senior
- 19:52hockey. Fantastic.
- 19:54And what kind of commitment does it take for for a youngster if
- 19:56they are interested in playing hockey?
- 19:58What sort of time commitment, you know, in terms of training
- 20:01and obviously equipment requires?
- 20:04Equipment, yeah, that's obviously it's a little bit
- 20:06expensive, but obviously due to the nature of the sport, the
- 20:09kids have got to be safe. So there's a lot of rules and
- 20:12regulations around kit fitting securely etcetera.
- 20:16But there is a lot of second hand kit because obviously kids
- 20:18outgrow things very quickly. So second hand equipment is
- 20:22often like brand new. So it's it can be cheap but.
- 20:27Yeah. You just have to play, right, so
- 20:28to speak. Right.
- 20:29Yeah, get the timing. Right.
- 20:30Wait for the summer holidays for the kids to eat and sleep and
- 20:33grow. Yes, absolutely.
- 20:35And in terms of actual match play, do they they play against
- 20:39other youth teams and other juniors, yes.
- 20:42So it's it's like a regional. So Petersburg is southeast up to
- 20:49the age of under sixteens and then it's South as per Phantoms
- 20:53too. But yeah, we play competitive
- 20:57games from the under twelves upwards and roughly works out
- 21:02about 1516 games every season. Under 10s is the only odd one
- 21:09out. They play cross ice, so two
- 21:11games on the ice at the same time because obviously little
- 21:15legs. Yeah, excellent.
- 21:19Good stuff, right? We need to take a short break
- 21:21there. We'll be back with more ice
- 21:22hockey in a moment. Don't go away.

- 24:19Ice Hockey, Peter. Phantoms.
- 24:20We've just been speaking to Scott Lambie from the junior
- 24:23side of the team and now it's over to Laura Brooks who's
- 24:27representing the The Phantoms women's side.
- 24:29Laura, good evening. Good evening.
- 24:31Thank you so much for having me. No, pleasure.
- 24:33Thank you for coming again. And once again, thank you for
- 24:35taking time out on your birthday to join us.
- 24:36Oh, no problem. It's a pleasure to be here.
- 24:38Brilliant. So obviously you're you're a
- 24:40player on the on the women's side of of of the club.
- 24:44First of all was how long, how long have you been playing ice
- 24:46hockey and and how did you get into it?
- 24:48So I've been playing for about 10 years now.
- 24:51The first time I touched a puck and a stick was when I was over
- 24:54in America visiting friends. I was skating on a frozen lake.
- 24:57They threw a stick at me. Said have a go.
- 24:59I was no good at skating and I was like right, let's let's have
- 25:02a go at this. So I had to go came back to the
- 25:03UK and found a team and so it started then at university and
- 25:07then took a break and then due to COVID and came and joined The
- 25:11Phantoms back in 2021. And here you are, yes.
- 25:15Here I am. Yeah, been with The Phantoms for
- 25:17the last two seasons. Excellent.
- 25:18How's that going with Phantoms? Oh, it's going fantastic.
- 25:21We have achieved some amazing feats this year, so for the
- 25:24first time in the history of the club, we reached the playoffs
- 25:26this past season. The deciding game.
- 25:28Our last home game in which we had the largest crowd we have
- 25:31ever had in attendance, around 250 people.
- 25:34We're looking to return to playoffs this coming season with
- 25:36the aim of winning the division. Amazing.
- 25:38That's super really good achievement and.
- 25:40It was a personal accolade for you this season as well.
- 25:42Wasn't there from from your peers?
- 25:44Yes, there was. So every season we have
- 25:48different awards. So we have an awards night at
- 25:49the end of the season to congratulate and recognize
- 25:52players. And this year I was voted
- 25:54players Player of the Season. Congratulations and that's it's
- 25:57good to kind of have that that from your fellow teammates,
- 26:00isn't it? Because you know that you're
- 26:02doing something right as and contributing well to the team in
- 26:05the squad. Yes, yeah, it was an honest to
- 26:07receive it. The ladies are absolutely
- 26:09lovely. Brilliant.
- 26:10And we were again, we were talking off air before you came
- 26:13before, before we came on on air.
- 26:15And you mentioned that your role goes beyond just playing in in
- 26:19in the side as well. There's a lot of.
- 26:21I imagine a lot of the team do it, but certainly you you muck
- 26:23in with other things as well, don't you?
- 26:25Yes, I do so on the on the ice I'm a center forward so I push
- 26:28those lines forward and try and get the goals with the other
- 26:30teammates. On the ice I'm generally a well
- 26:33known player on the team. I'm the go to person for baked
- 26:35goods so I bake for every home game.
- 26:37Make sure us ladies are fed afterwards.
- 26:38We need those sugar treats after the games and then pre training
- 26:42and pre games I do off ice warm ups and hype everyone up.
- 26:45Get them to think about what we're going to do on the ice and
- 26:47then get to it. Fantastic.
- 26:49That's brilliant. You're the sort of squad member
- 26:52that every squad needs, isn't it Really.
- 26:54Yes, yeah. Especially for the bacon, I'll
- 26:57get me on the ice. It's more about off the ice
- 26:59some. It's probably more appealing.
- 27:01What's actually Speaking of baking For a moment, gladly.
- 27:05Let's raise that. What's what?
- 27:06What goes down well in the team? What?
- 27:07What kind of baking goes down well with us, with the team?
- 27:10Well, I think favorites from the team of the brownies, but I know
- 27:13the favorite of the coaches, my cookies, so it's a tie up every
- 27:16time. Do I go with the coach or the
- 27:17players? Absolutely.
- 27:19And what normally happens? She does both, hopefully.
- 27:24Yes, yeah. And hopefully this season we'll
- 27:26have some more people contributing to the baking
- 27:28because I think we've got some other bakers on the team.
- 27:30So we'll see. The Great Phantoms Bake Off.
- 27:32Oh, yes, so. Those of you that are listening
- 27:35tonight to Laura and I'm messaging her, there's your
- 27:38challenge. You've got to take it baking and
- 27:41you'll be competing in The Phantoms Bake Off.
- 27:43Absolutely. And next time you're on as a
- 27:45guest, you bring one of the one of the bakers on with you.
- 27:48Yes. And that sounds great.
- 27:49Yeah, that'd be great. And bring them in as well are.
- 27:51You in the trees, Yes. Absolutely, dude.
- 27:57Okay on the series. So going back to the sort of
- 27:59playing side of things, and I presume your home matches are
- 28:03played at Planet Ice like like because that's the center of ice
- 28:06hockey in the city? What days do do the matches take
- 28:09place? So generally the matches are on
- 28:10a Saturday or Sunday, so this season we'll probably find out
- 28:13our games in September, October for the whole season.
- 28:16All our games are free to attend and so it'd be great to see more
- 28:19people come down. If you do want to help out,
- 28:21there's always volunteer roles, so I'm looking for people to
- 28:23come and run the clock. You can also sit behind the
- 28:25goals and press a button and it shows when the goals go in.
- 28:29Also, you can count how many goals are shot on net.
- 28:31That's really great for the statistics for the goalies.
- 28:33It can show how good there are, how many shots they get on that,
- 28:36and it shows the team as well how.
- 28:37Many shops you're getting on the net and how many you're on
- 28:40target, which is really, really useful data to have for a team.
- 28:43Yeah, I'll say be a proper sort of statue person for the for
- 28:46the, for the team, that sounds really good.
- 28:49So if you're into ice hockey then that's a good opportunity.
- 28:51I say it's free to get in, and if you're obviously a volunteer,
- 28:54then you're playing an active part in the in the team's
- 28:57success as well. Yes, I'll save some bacon for
- 28:58you. That's an incentive, isn't it?
- 29:02So you play play on a Saturday or Sunday.
- 29:03What about training? When does training take place?
- 29:05So the women train on a Wednesday generally in the
- 29:08evening. And so it's at the moment we
- 29:11train for an hour and a half. That might change as it as the
- 29:13season starts again. So keep an eye on our Facebook
- 29:16page and you can contact us through Facebook.
- 29:19We also have Instagram, TikTok, I believe you also have Twitter.
- 29:22So yeah, look out for our social media platforms and get in touch
- 29:26and. I know again, we were saying
- 29:27before that. Social media following is
- 29:29growing very well, isn't? It Yes.
- 29:31Yeah. Our TikTok seems quite popular,
- 29:34but we also do match reports after every game, so we do have
- 29:36a website so you can read about our games, how goals are scored,
- 29:39our defense, everything so you can get involved and feel like
- 29:42you're part of the game. In some of our games as well if
- 29:44we have volunteers, we have our live updates on Twitter and on
- 29:48other social media platforms, so we try and keep everyone as up
- 29:51to date as possible if you can't make our games.
- 29:52And what sort of content you put on TikTok then is it, is it sort
- 29:55of highlights of matches of goals or what what sort of
- 29:58things you? So we try and get match videos,
- 30:01but otherwise we'd get some pictures and we show sort of
- 30:04upcoming games. We do little, so animated videos
- 30:07or we do little post ones that say whether we've lost, whether
- 30:10we've won, congratulating everyone, picking out whether
- 30:13there's the match, that sort of thing.
- 30:15So we do little videos all over the place and also we had a
- 30:18fantastic one for our last game of the season, showing that we
- 30:21were really getting ready on and off the ice for this game.
- 30:24Brilliant. You've just taken the words out
- 30:25of my mouth in terms of your pretty much rituals, for
- 30:28example. They're sort of quirks that
- 30:30players go through and generally through the games as well.
- 30:33Just capturing those moments can really make some great footage
- 30:36and appeal to potentially new players as well.
- 30:39Yes, yes. So we do have everyone has their
- 30:41own little match rituals. So I find a lot of goalies like
- 30:44to get their heads down, put your head friends in.
- 30:46That's quite typical of our goalie as well.
- 30:49So she enjoys doing that, just getting in her own zone.
- 30:51For us as a team, we do like to come together and really show
- 30:55sort of unity and do off ice warm ups and then have a chat
- 30:58and really get our heads in the game.
- 30:59We also have music in the change room, get everyone hiked but
- 31:01also focusing on is this team difficult one to play, are we
- 31:04going to win it? We want to put everything we can
- 31:06into this game and so we are a team that wants to win.
- 31:10We don't just, you know, go just for fun.
- 31:12We really are. A driven team.
- 31:14Brilliant and and I mean you talk about a lot of things there
- 31:17that that sort of brings that team spirit together and that
- 31:20bonding and would you put that down a lot of that down to the
- 31:23success of the of the team. I know obviously take technical
- 31:25ability and you have to be a good player generally anyway,
- 31:28but what other things do you think contribute to the team's
- 31:30success? Apart from biking?
- 31:32Yeah, apart from baking, I think everyone is just so nice.
- 31:35And it's not just the support from the team on the ice, it's
- 31:38the support off the ice. Not just with hockey, with
- 31:40everything. It's a massive community and all
- 31:42the players are so lovely. They want to know you.
- 31:44They don't just want to know your skill.
- 31:46Whether you're new, whether you're experienced player,
- 31:48everyone is welcome on the ice, especially for the women.
- 31:51We've had so many new people start over the last couple
- 31:53months and I think about 12, maybe more come on the ice and
- 31:57really have a go. And it's fantastic to see new
- 31:58people on the ice. Brilliant and.
- 32:01Going back to the competition side of things, obviously the
- 32:03season like it starts in the autumn.
- 32:05How long does the season run from then?
- 32:07From from when to when? So generally it runs from
- 32:09September, October all the way through to April, May.
- 32:11So our playoffs this year over the May Bank holiday weekend.
- 32:14So we traveled to Sheffield and had a weekend away and played
- 32:17some hockey. Just hockey.
- 32:20Yes, we had some fun as. Well, I'm sure that mirrors the
- 32:24men's season effectively then as well, doesn't it as well because
- 32:28they have to play off finals at Coventry, I think the main.
- 32:31And some men's side. And so, yeah, so it's good to
- 32:35see that there is that replication between men and
- 32:38women's hockey, yes. Definitely we we support the
- 32:40men, It's great on social media. We make our post and support
- 32:43them and they also support us. So it's it's really as a
- 32:45community. Brilliant, great.
- 32:47And how long has the women team been been around another club?
- 32:50So the women's team started back in 1998 and it was known as the
- 32:55Peterborough Penguins. And that was rebranded a couple
- 32:58of years ago when Sue O'Sullivan took over the management of the
- 33:00team. So that was full rebranding.
- 33:02We were adopted into The Phantoms Academy.
- 33:04And yeah, so it's since then we've really grown in our
- 33:08standing in the community and in on social media.
- 33:10But some of our players have been playing for decades.
- 33:13So yeah, and actually did try out for the Peter Penguins and
- 33:16played with them for a couple of months back in 2015.
- 33:18So that's why I came back, because I knew they were so
- 33:20nice. Brilliant.
- 33:22Sounds good. So they're obviously doing
- 33:23something right to attract you to come back and.
- 33:25And play play long term. So and I think part of that you
- 33:29talked about that that reorg a couple of years ago and I think
- 33:32everything generally at the club is now under The Phantoms
- 33:34umbrella now, isn't it? Whereas it was before segmented,
- 33:37should I say Yeah, it was very segmented.
- 33:39Yeah, yeah, obviously you've got the two senior teams, women's
- 33:43for office, Penguins, as Laura's just said, and then the Academy,
- 33:46Junior Academy was separate as well.
- 33:48But yeah, like Laura's just said, the last couple of years
- 33:51the women's have come under it, The Phantoms to have come under
- 33:53the Academy banner, and then the overall banner is Phantom's
- 33:58brand. Which which helps doesn't it
- 34:00Because in the fact that he, he then starts to elevate your.
- 34:03I suppose you the people get to realize that there is more than
- 34:07just the men's team there or the first teams there and it starts
- 34:09to elevate the other teams in in in the club and and it brings it
- 34:12all together and then it it helps with the pathway for
- 34:14youngsters to come through as well doesn't it?
- 34:16Because it's it's all under one. You got the support and the and
- 34:19the sponsorship effectively of the club to be able to do and
- 34:22achieve what you want. Yes.
- 34:23And I think especially for the women, it was difficult to
- 34:26decide where to go beyond a certain age because you do have
- 34:28the men's team and then it's what do we do with the women.
- 34:30So for our team, we do take on players from age 12 and from
- 34:34their 14th birthday. They're able to play games so
- 34:36they can train with us for a couple of years as they're young
- 34:38and then start playing games with us.
- 34:39So actually play an adult game from 14 onwards.
- 34:42Can they? Oh, wow.
- 34:43That's really good. And we also do have a
- 34:46development team. So this year we do want to build
- 34:48not just our women's, the national team, we have a
- 34:50development team. This is something that's growing
- 34:52massively with the support of our coach and his wife and it's
- 34:55fantastic to see what's being going on.
- 34:57We also are developing a connection with Chelmsford and
- 35:01building those games, development games specifically.
- 35:03So if you don't feel confident or strong enough to go and play
- 35:06at these national games, you'll still be able to develop, get
- 35:08that game time. That's good.
- 35:10And you talked about obviously the youngsters coming through
- 35:12the ladies side or women's I suppose it would be girls at
- 35:15that point and then become women so to speak.
- 35:17So how is that separate to what Scott was describing for the
- 35:20juniors or is that linked into what Scott does the work that
- 35:22Scott on his side of the doctors.
- 35:23So there's a little bit of a link obviously from the learn to
- 35:26play, we can highlight certain girls that have got potential to
- 35:31join the women's and then they've got the option to stay
- 35:34with the juniors and train with the women's as well.
- 35:37So in theory, they're getting double their ice time and
- 35:40training. That's really good, isn't it?
- 35:42That, that and, but that. Again, part of being under the
- 35:45same umbrella and the brand like we speaking earlier gives that
- 35:47opportunity for the the different areas of the club then
- 35:50to work together and and bring it all together.
- 35:52Yeah, definitely. So that's all good news for
- 35:54everyone, isn't it? Brilliant, Right.
- 35:56Let's take another short break there.
- 35:57We'll be back with some more ice hockey with Scott and Laura.

- 37:55Brooks with us today. Scott from the junior side and
- 37:58Laura from the women's side of Peterborough Phantoms.
- 38:02If I just come to you first, Scott, we talked about obviously
- 38:05juniors and and up and coming future stars effectively.
- 38:09If if there's parents out there listening or or youngsters out
- 38:11there listening who want to get involved and play hockey, how,
- 38:13how can they reach out and how can they get involved?
- 38:16Yeah, certainly. So yeah.
- 38:17Obviously we're always looking for new recruits, especially the
- 38:21under 10s and under twelves. That gives them a really good
- 38:23opportunity to develop over the years.
- 38:27But there's a learn to play. It's generally on a Saturday
- 38:30morning, half eight in the morning, so it's not an early.
- 38:34Kids are up early anyway, aren't they?
- 38:35Sorry. Kids are up early anyway, aren't
- 38:37they? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:38I'm not walk around like a zombie, but yeah, it's run
- 38:44through Planet Ice, so all the details will be on Planet Ice's
- 38:47website. Obviously the Academy support
- 38:51that through the coaching, but it is a Planet Ice run course.
- 38:57Obviously I'll be there. There's a couple of other
- 38:59coaches that always on the ice on the Saturday morning and that
- 39:04that's the best opportunity to be fair.
- 39:06Yeah. So that's the kind of entry
- 39:07point on the Saturday morning contact through Planet Ice and
- 39:09then once. Once they're on board, what's
- 39:11the process look after after in terms of what days they train?
- 39:15What sort of commitment would they need?
- 39:16So obviously if they, if they do make the grade through, learn to
- 39:19play there, they'll be invited to trial period with the Academy
- 39:24trial period. It sounds a bit formal, but it's
- 39:28more a case of we will the kid enjoy playing with the players?
- 39:32Does he like the structure of the club and the training?
- 39:36It's very rare that we've turned down a player to stay with the
- 39:39Academy. So it's all about that
- 39:41dedication and their commitment to the support and what, what
- 39:47day are the Academy days when you so Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 39:50Thursday and Saturday. Wow, Across all the age groups?
- 39:53Yeah, is that generally we try to chat train each age group
- 39:57twice a week. OK, and that's evenings, I
- 39:59guess. Obviously so after school.
- 40:01Or evening share? Brilliant.
- 40:02OK. And now how long does that
- 40:04Academy phase? Take or is that kind of an
- 40:07ongoing thing until they until it comes to a situation where
- 40:10you think, yeah they will either want to carry on of their own
- 40:13etcetera. How does that only learn to
- 40:14play. Yeah yeah.
- 40:15So they'll they try to reach grade five with the learn to
- 40:18play option and then that grade four we invite them for trials
- 40:23just to give them that extra little bit because they learn to
- 40:26play. It's it's such a mixed bag of
- 40:28abilities, but once they go on that trial with the Academy, we
- 40:32really see a pickup in their abilities and their their focus
- 40:35on the sport. Absolutely.
- 40:37And obviously everything you say is, you're not saying as a
- 40:40manager or a coach, you've lived this with your child, haven't
- 40:43you as well? So two of my children now, Yeah,
- 40:46Yeah. So what would you say to a
- 40:48parent or somebody who's sitting on the fencing in Shall I Shaw?
- 40:50And I, What would you? What would you go for it?
- 40:53Yeah, definitely go for it. And the learn to play.
- 40:55Obviously we spoke about the expense of some of the kit, but
- 40:58the learn to play all the kits provided you know, we provide
- 41:02helmet, gloves and stick and Planet Hospital obviously
- 41:06provides gates if needed but there is no expense to try the
- 41:10sport. Brilliant.
- 41:12Good advice, excellent. Thank you and Laura on the
- 41:14ladies and and and sort of youth youth.
- 41:18Or girls on ladies side, what's the process to engage and what
- 41:22can they expect? So similar to Scott, there's no
- 41:25cost to try the sport. We do have plenty of spare kit
- 41:28that you can use to try. We've got skates, absolutely
- 41:30everything you could need. So please come down and have a
- 41:33go. You can contact us through
- 41:34Facebook or any of the social media outlets and then we will
- 41:38get back in touch. And so we do train again on a
- 41:40Wednesday and yeah, as I said, games on a Saturday or Sunday.
- 41:44So please reach out. Would be great to hear from you.
- 41:47And I just got a search for Peter.
- 41:48As women, haven't they? Yes, you do.
- 41:49Yeah. Peter Phantom swimming.
- 41:51Fantastic. And could be anyone out there
- 41:54that's listening. Obviously you explained your
- 41:56story. You had a unique situation.
- 41:58Perhaps didn't think of ice hockey until you were out in the
- 42:01out in America. Friends asked you to try and you
- 42:04kind of fell for it then, didn't you?
- 42:05Yes, Yeah. So.
- 42:06We literally fell for it. Careful words.
- 42:09Yeah, I. Mean I did fall a few times.
- 42:12Yeah, whatever your story come and come and have a go.
- 42:15It's a great sport, great community.
- 42:18Yeah, we're happy to see where you're at.
- 42:21And then there's other ways you can learn.
- 42:23Like Scott's mentioned through the show.
- 42:24There's ways you can develop your skating and there's always
- 42:27off. I stuff you can do as well.
- 42:28You can manage your and develop your skills with.
- 42:32Handling through off ice sessions as well, so there's
- 42:35lots you can do. Absolutely.
- 42:36And I guess the other thing is, especially for youngsters, it's
- 42:39a whole new social experience of all, isn't it?
- 42:42You know, it's more than just your school friends and the
- 42:44people who live down your street.
- 42:46You, you, you're mixing with like minded people, with similar
- 42:48interests, from a different background, people you never met
- 42:51before and creates another friend.
- 42:52Circle doesn't. It yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:54It's a massive, massive environment.
- 42:56Obviously with the away games, you're traveling across the
- 42:59country. It's not like a typical football
- 43:01match that's down the local park.
- 43:03You know, we're traveling miles across the country to get these
- 43:06kids playing ice hockey. Laurie brought some medals in
- 43:12with you. Yes, I talk.
- 43:13Us through what you've got here, you've got a puck as well.
- 43:15Yes. So the puck is the finals
- 43:17weekend puck. So that was the women's National
- 43:20Ice Hockey League playoffs final puck.
- 43:22And so that's what we achieved this year.
- 43:24So getting to that playoffs weekend.
- 43:26So that's the commemorative puck.
- 43:27From that. I've also got two medals that
- 43:30are given when you attend and you play the games throughout
- 43:34the season. So that's the women's Phantoms
- 43:362020 1/22/22 season medal, and I've also got the one from. 2022
- 43:41to 2023 and they are given to, yeah, any player that takes
- 43:44part. Yes, just for participating.
- 43:58And something that we work towards during games is you can
- 44:01be voted well by the the coach as the player of the game.
- 43:46Yeah. So you don't have to go out and
- 43:48win something. So again, it brings in us.
- 43:50It's the social aspect of it as well.
- 43:52But people feel rewarded at the end and they've still got
- 43:55something to take home with them and show their family and
- 43:57friends. So that is something you want to
- 44:07really strive for in every game is that you want to play your
- 44:09best and. Do that and then you get a medal
- 44:12usually, or a trophy for that as well, so something you can
- 44:15achieve on every single game. That's good, isn't it?
- 44:17And it's about, you know, you want to reward success and you
- 44:21want to reward you know little as well as big success, don't
- 44:23you? Because you want to recognize
- 44:25people's efforts and contributions.
- 44:27Yeah, just looking down your Facebook page, actually.
- 44:30So you've got your rewards night as well.
- 44:31Yes, we do. It's a great night.
- 44:34Yeah. Is that with all the kids there
- 44:38as well? 96 kids?
- 44:39Yeah. Registered.
- 44:40Yeah. So they're all.
- 44:41That's a great site and that's testament to all the hard work
- 44:43that you've put in over the course of the previous 12 months
- 44:46effectively. And to have all those kids there
- 44:49going away with a medal or something, a memento to
- 44:51recognize their hard work. It's something that they feel
- 44:54happy and proud to show off and take to school, Potentially as
- 44:56well, definitely. It's like Laura mentioned every
- 44:59every child in the Academy will be rewarded with a team award
- 45:03for that participation. There is special awards for the
- 45:06the the elite players of the groups, but everyone goes away
- 45:11with a smile on their face and a a small award.
- 45:13Brilliant. And away from competitive
- 45:15hockey, we talked about early and and you mentioned that
- 45:19there's some charity work that goes on.
- 45:21From the clubs as well. Yes, yes.
- 45:22So within recreational hockey they like to do charity games.
- 45:26So there's a team, the Warriors, they were created this last
- 45:29season so they've had one full season and they did a charity
- 45:32game recently and that was against Nottingham City Cyclones
- 45:35and they raised over 1500 pounds for Mind, which was fantastic.
- 45:40Yeah. And likewise my first team in
- 45:43Petersburg was Peter for Phoenix and they raised over £3000 for
- 45:47the defibrillator outside the rink.
- 45:49So supporting the community with defib in the region.
- 45:54That's brilliant. Really good stuff.
- 45:55Really good stuff. So any future charity endeavors
- 45:59planned or anything you'd like to do?
- 46:01Yeah. So I know there's something in
- 46:03the pipe work. So again, we want to go to
- 46:05Nottingham. So the Warriors, who I play for
- 46:07on a recreational level, they are already organizing a charity
- 46:10game with Nottingham again, but this time hosted in Nottingham,
- 46:13so that's already in the pipeline.
- 46:14Brilliant. Look forward to that.
- 46:15Not forgetting the Phantom's Bake Off competition.
- 46:19That could become a charity thing, yeah.
- 46:21Potentially, but also just a great way to bring the team
- 46:23together in that way, isn't it? Whether it be juniors and
- 46:26parents or switches of the women's side as well.
- 46:28So you can have even the men's first team as well, could get
- 46:31involved and have some creations, shall we say.
- 46:34Yeah, and if you're not a hockey player yet and you'd like to
- 46:36take part in this Phantom's Bake Off, then get playing hockey and
- 46:39then you can take playoffs. Absolutely.
- 46:40And if you want to donate any proceeds from the Bake Off, then
- 46:43Nielish and I will be glad. Of those I.
- 46:46Think we're going to a game now? I think definitely.
- 46:48I think we just talked ourselves into that one.
- 46:50Fantastic. Just also mentioned, Phantom
- 46:54Supports Club are hosting a Family Fun day in August on
- 46:57August the 28th on Monday starts at 12 until 4:00 PM at the White
- 47:01Hart in Ufford. And the 2324 season players will
- 47:04be in attendance with many games and activities to enjoy on the
- 47:08day. The white art will be putting on
- 47:10BBQ, Hog Roast and pizza from their new pizza shack.
- 47:14There'll be a raffle and a tombola on the day as well.
- 47:17And yeah, just get along to that, support the the team and
- 47:20the club. It's it's an open invite.
- 47:22It opens the public and I guess you guys will be there or?
- 47:26Representatives from the club will be there, The junior,
- 47:29junior team will be there as well in the numbers.
- 47:31Yeah, obviously, like like you mentioned, the senior team will
- 47:35be there. So the juniors, especially at a
- 47:37younger age, like to be there to, yeah, rub shoulders with
- 47:40the. Shoulders grab autographs and
- 47:42get pictures taken and just inspire them for the season
- 47:45ahead. Last year they put the The
- 47:47Phantoms one players in the stock.
- 47:49Oh wow, wet sponges at them. So brilliant.
- 47:51But I'll be down then. Super, super.
- 47:56I probably shouldn't ask, but are you targeting somebody that
- 47:58by saying that then if you'll be down.
- 48:01I don't know, but I feel like I should target.
- 48:03Fantastic, brilliant, right? Times called us up
- 48:06unfortunately. But just a quick reminder,
- 48:07Scott, so how, if people want it all kids or people want to get
- 48:10involved in the junior side, how can they do that?
- 48:12Just, yeah, Free the Learn to apply, Free Planet ISIS website.
- 48:16Obviously I can pass on my details if they want direct
- 48:18contact with me. Fantastic and Laura for the
- 48:21women's and let and the girls side.
- 48:22So if you want to contact us through social media, Facebook's
- 48:24a good way to go. And there's also for
- 48:27recreational side. We do have a Peterborough UK
- 48:29Hockey Wreck page and that gives you the details for everyone
- 48:32that trains on. On different days.
- 48:33Brilliant. Thank you very much for your
- 48:35time, both you and been absolute pleasure to have you on the show
- 48:37and do keep in touch. Thank you very much.
- 48:40And all the best for the for the forthcoming season.

- 49:19And yeah, whether you're participating or volunteering,
- 49:21then enjoy it. Absolutely.
- 49:23Thank you very much. Take care.
- 49:24Bye.
