- 0:41Speaker 3: All right, welcome back in our number two of o TV.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Here live from the Raising Kines Studio. And our guy,
- 0:50Speaker 3: doctor Stephen Athriche here with us as he joined us
- 0:53Speaker 3: every single Wednesday. I feel like I've been out every
- 0:57Speaker 3: Wednesday for a very long time. So Doc, good to
- 1:00Speaker 3: see you.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It's been a minute.
- 1:01Speaker 5: Yeah, get everybody here today. Super Bowl vacation combine.
- 1:06Speaker 3: So yeah, the wolf that hadn't been in the room
- 1:08Speaker 3: in a long time together, but we're here today.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Would you like to hear Matt Flinn Howe love to love?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you said this guy can Actually, this guy can
- 1:24Speaker 3: throw touchdowns at l s U and the SEC can
- 1:27Speaker 3: throw touchdowns in the National Football League. He can run
- 1:29Speaker 3: a very successful hydration company. He is pissed poor at Howling.
- 1:34Speaker 6: Well, like I's practice, I don't do it a lot,
- 1:37Speaker 6: you know, And I got a little confused earlier. It
- 1:39Speaker 6: was early, hadn't had a lot of coffee. So we'll
- 1:41Speaker 6: get we'll.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Be better when you get to the tape by howling.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well I was.
- 1:45Speaker 6: I was about like, I was like, what comes first?
- 1:48Speaker 6: Where the inflection point needs to be? And then I
- 1:51Speaker 6: just went, oh last time, oh yeah, like who got
- 1:57Speaker 6: not good?
- 1:58Speaker 2: It wasn't good, Doc Hey handing the year.
- 2:00Speaker 6: The credit to myself for taking the credit, taking the
- 2:02Speaker 6: blame and having full self awareness about my howling skills.
- 2:07Speaker 7: They're kind of hard to like not take the blame
- 2:10Speaker 7: for it because they're just so bad.
- 2:11Speaker 2: A lot of people, you know, dig their feet in
- 2:13Speaker 2: they're like.
- 2:13Speaker 8: No, that was good, that was it, but everybody is
- 2:15Speaker 8: telling you they're a bad You can't dig your feet.
- 2:16Speaker 5: In on that, allow myself to myself.
- 2:20Speaker 3: But you just did basically Okay, yes, that's good, that's good.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I heard you in doc talking about youth baseball. Yeah,
- 2:28Speaker 3: as we were coming. Yeah, probably a pretty I would
- 2:30Speaker 3: assume this time of year, every year, a little hot
- 2:33Speaker 3: topic for you. I'm sure you get some of your
- 2:35Speaker 3: friends to say, hey, little Johnny's throwing this amount of pitches,
- 2:38Speaker 3: Little Johnny's arms a little sore right now. It's so
- 2:42Speaker 3: different than when any of us grew up. Sure, when
- 2:45Speaker 3: we grew up there wasn't as many games, Like you
- 2:47Speaker 3: played like on a Wednesday night and league play and
- 2:49Speaker 3: you catch the next Wednesday, and you know, little Johnny
- 2:51Speaker 3: would pitch and then little Richie would pitch. Well, now
- 2:54Speaker 3: it's like you got these tournaments and their Friday, Saturday,
- 2:57Speaker 3: Sunday and you could play gosh eight games, right, and
- 3:00Speaker 3: there's pitch Counter's pitch limits. But even that, it's like, okay,
- 3:03Speaker 3: well some coaches are going to push those limits. How
- 3:06Speaker 3: many questions this time of year do you get about
- 3:08Speaker 3: arm soreness from just the youth level.
- 3:11Speaker 8: Yeah, it's it's it's it's a lot, and it's a
- 3:13Speaker 8: real thing, and it's it's something we need to be
- 3:15Speaker 8: mindful of. You know, I think, I think to your point,
- 3:17Speaker 8: it's so different than it was, you know, really not
- 3:20Speaker 8: even that long ago.
- 3:21Speaker 4: But it's changed a lot.
- 3:22Speaker 8: You know, like you said, we'd play a few games,
- 3:24Speaker 8: maybe you'd have that one tournament at the end of
- 3:25Speaker 8: the year, or some of these kids would go play
- 3:27Speaker 8: in their All Star league, which would be in the summer.
- 3:29Speaker 8: But but you know, now you have fall ball, you
- 3:32Speaker 8: have summer ball, you have club ball, you have metro ball,
- 3:34Speaker 8: you have all these different leagues. Kids are playing in
- 3:36Speaker 8: a league team and a tournament team. They're traveling in
- 3:39Speaker 8: the tournaments, like you said, they might be playing eight games.
- 3:41Speaker 8: If you know, if you make that winner's bracket, you
- 3:43Speaker 8: keep going, how many.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Kids you got on the team.
- 3:45Speaker 8: You know, most of these most these rosters aren't aren't
- 3:48Speaker 8: big enough. So everybody's got a pitch. And yeah, and
- 3:50Speaker 8: it does become a problem.
- 3:51Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:51Speaker 8: It's it's this time of year, especially once you really
- 3:53Speaker 8: get into late March April. I mean, if you come
- 3:56Speaker 8: by and hang out my clinic almost every afternoon, I'm
- 3:58Speaker 8: gonna have a kid or two. This guy an elbow
- 4:00Speaker 8: or a shoulder, it is hurting from baseball. And then
- 4:03Speaker 8: that's just going to read the reality. And and and
- 4:06Speaker 8: even when coaches try and do right, we were talking
- 4:08Speaker 8: about it, you know, there are pitch limits, and like
- 4:10Speaker 8: you said, some coaches will push it. And but but
- 4:11Speaker 8: then sometimes, like I said, you have this kid playing
- 4:13Speaker 8: on two or three teams, and I'm, uh, you know,
- 4:15Speaker 8: if I'm doing the right thing, and you're doing the
- 4:17Speaker 8: right thing, but I don't know what he did with you.
- 4:19Speaker 8: And right then, on top of that, you're going to
- 4:20Speaker 8: your pitching lessons and and and you're doing all this
- 4:23Speaker 8: other stuff. Everybody's got their private lessons. It's it's really
- 4:26Speaker 8: become a thing. And and and you know, the the unfortunate
- 4:28Speaker 8: thing is driven by money. Let's just be honest. You Yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 8: these these these coaches, these these leagues, everybody's making money.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Uh.
- 4:33Speaker 8: And so it's probably not the best interest of these
- 4:35Speaker 8: kids to play baseball year round and to throw that much.
- 4:38Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:38Speaker 8: And when we were growing up, you had one season
- 4:41Speaker 8: and then most of us played something else. You know,
- 4:43Speaker 8: there's these kids that you didn't specialize when you were twelve.
- 4:46Speaker 8: You know, you played you played football in the in
- 4:47Speaker 8: the fall, you played soccer, you played basketball, you ran track,
- 4:50Speaker 8: you did baseball.
- 4:51Speaker 4: And it was it was.
- 4:52Speaker 8: And there's something for that too, the training, the different
- 4:54Speaker 8: muscle groups. You know, we we we all feel that
- 4:57Speaker 8: multi sport athletes, it's better for your body and and
- 5:00Speaker 8: you're probably a better athlete in the long run.
- 5:01Speaker 4: But there's so much pressure to be that guy.
- 5:03Speaker 7: Now.
- 5:03Speaker 4: It's it's it's a it's a it's an epidemic.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Specializing for youth sports is like the worst thing, like
- 5:09Speaker 6: in my mind that can happen, Like play a lot
- 5:12Speaker 6: of sports. It's how you said, like even from like
- 5:13Speaker 6: a medical statement, like training, you train different muscle grips,
- 5:16Speaker 6: but like to be a better athlete, play different sports.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Be a kid.
- 5:20Speaker 4: There's so much pressure.
- 5:21Speaker 2: There's so much that in there. There's a lot of
- 5:23Speaker 2: and I was saying.
- 5:24Speaker 3: That that was one of the cool parts of the
- 5:25Speaker 3: combine is we had these bios of all these different
- 5:28Speaker 3: players and then you'd go into high school like wrestler, track, basketball, soccer, baseball.
- 5:34Speaker 3: So the guys that are in Indianapolis trying to go
- 5:37Speaker 3: to the National Football League, every one of them, to
- 5:40Speaker 3: a man, had something right, They had something else in
- 5:42Speaker 3: high school that they did. I we didn't come across
- 5:45Speaker 3: one person that didn't play anything but football.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Yep. And they're making it to the next levels the best.
- 5:51Speaker 8: The best thing you can probably find that just about
- 5:53Speaker 8: every sport. I mean, there comes a point you know
- 5:54Speaker 8: when you get cut it down for five when you're
- 5:57Speaker 8: when you're twelve, may play four sports.
- 5:59Speaker 4: When you're fourteen, maybe you go to three.
- 6:00Speaker 5: And then I.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Focused on one when I got to because I had to.
- 6:04Speaker 6: I didn't want to, but I had to because I
- 6:06Speaker 6: was at a big school.
- 6:06Speaker 5: You played baseball.
- 6:07Speaker 6: I thought, oh my god, yeah that was my sport.
- 6:10Speaker 6: I didn't play football until seventh grade, and I got
- 6:12Speaker 6: beat out. I didn't mean, like actually play football till
- 6:14Speaker 6: eighth grade.
- 6:15Speaker 5: So it was.
- 6:18Speaker 6: Like the yeah, the specialized in sports. So my son
- 6:20Speaker 6: was playing basketball two weeks ago. It was at the
- 6:24Speaker 6: y m c A and playing like I think that
- 6:26Speaker 6: last game of the season. The sign on the wall
- 6:28Speaker 6: was like the big thing said nobody's given out scholarships today,
- 6:31Speaker 6: and I was like, yeah, that's the best. That's that's
- 6:33Speaker 6: a great I should be on every youth sport field
- 6:36Speaker 6: court whatever.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Nobody's getting drafted all this game today, No, not one
- 6:40Speaker 3: thinking person.
- 6:42Speaker 6: So I got into that conversation because I pitched growing
- 6:46Speaker 6: up and uh felling gas doc obviously, but my dad
- 6:51Speaker 6: being said dad would only So my dad pitched growing up.
- 6:54Speaker 6: He played quarterbacks, so he was he was my coach
- 6:56Speaker 6: and everything. So I do a four seamed fastball, two
- 6:59Speaker 6: seamed fastball. I had a nasty circle change. But he
- 7:02Speaker 6: would never let me throw a curveball, never let me
- 7:05Speaker 6: practice it, wouldn't even show me the grip for it.
- 7:07Speaker 6: And he said, when you turn sixteen, you can drive
- 7:09Speaker 6: a car. I'll teach you the curveball. And he's like,
- 7:12Speaker 6: just because you're this is probably an old, really old
- 7:16Speaker 6: school mentality, but he's like, just because your your bone structure,
- 7:20Speaker 6: you're looking like nothing is formed the right way and
- 7:22Speaker 6: you could really hurt your elbow throwing a curveball. That's,
- 7:25Speaker 6: of course the twisting the torque, and you've got to
- 7:28Speaker 6: create enough torque that hurts something, of course, and I
- 7:30Speaker 6: could do that, but is that And it's like, and
- 7:34Speaker 6: I'm not asking you, like what pitches they should or
- 7:36Speaker 6: shouldn't throw, but like, do you see elbowed issues on
- 7:40Speaker 6: youth pitchers today come through your clinic because of have
- 7:46Speaker 6: you ever been able to point to that is there
- 7:47Speaker 6: any validity to what basically my dad was telling me
- 7:50Speaker 6: when I was growing up.
- 7:50Speaker 8: Yeah, So it's a it's an interesting question because it
- 7:53Speaker 8: is one that even in people who do a lot
- 7:55Speaker 8: of youth baseball sports medicine, there's a little bit of
- 7:58Speaker 8: a debate there with the whole curveball thing. Now, yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 8: I think the I think the safe rule is one volume.
- 8:05Speaker 8: So volume is the number one thing, so more so
- 8:07Speaker 8: than anything else, how much volume? How much are you
- 8:09Speaker 8: throwing here into pitch counts, making sure these kids get
- 8:11Speaker 8: their rest, making sure you know all those things. You know,
- 8:13Speaker 8: I think you know, one of the numbers i've here
- 8:15Speaker 8: is you shouldn't you shouldn't do any more hours than
- 8:17Speaker 8: you are years old in a week of any sport training.
- 8:19Speaker 8: So if you're twelve, you shouldn't do more than twelve
- 8:21Speaker 8: hours on a week, which you know most of our
- 8:23Speaker 8: teams are going way over that.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Yeah twelve Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 4: A week too, mind you. So that's not a day,
- 8:29Speaker 4: it's a week.
- 8:30Speaker 8: But the curve ball thing, you know, there's some of
- 8:32Speaker 8: the more recent data that a lot of people are
- 8:35Speaker 8: talking about, is maybe not as crucial as long as
- 8:38Speaker 8: you're doing the volume.
- 8:39Speaker 4: And then the other thing is technique in form.
- 8:41Speaker 8: You know, I think that you can make arguments either
- 8:44Speaker 8: way having really good technique, having really good form, making
- 8:47Speaker 8: sure that you're not, you know, having having poor mechanics,
- 8:50Speaker 8: because that that's probably a bigger risk.
- 8:52Speaker 4: And then and again, you know, getting paid to coach it.
- 8:56Speaker 5: And so.
- 8:58Speaker 8: You know, I think, well, I think if you if
- 9:00Speaker 8: you follow that rule, because of of the more complexity
- 9:03Speaker 8: that comes into throwing a curveball, if you follow the
- 9:06Speaker 8: rule of hey, I'm gonna wait until basing my growth
- 9:08Speaker 8: plates are closed to have my kids throw curves.
- 9:10Speaker 4: You're probably safer, you.
- 9:11Speaker 8: Know, because unless unless you're really really good with that
- 9:14Speaker 8: mechanics and technique, which is your point, everybody's gonna feel
- 9:17Speaker 8: like they probably are. You know, I coached my son's
- 9:19Speaker 8: base I'll be the first day, I was a horrible
- 9:20Speaker 8: baseball coach, you know, you know, I.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Was like I was a raw, raw guy on the dugout.
- 9:24Speaker 4: That was all I was good at.
- 9:25Speaker 8: But but you know, I didn't play baseball for very long,
- 9:28Speaker 8: so I made sure I didn't try to mess with
- 9:30Speaker 8: these kids. And you know, but because that's the reality,
- 9:32Speaker 8: it's it's but if if you really want to follow
- 9:34Speaker 8: the rules, volume is the big thing. How much pitching
- 9:38Speaker 8: they're doing, how much throwing they're doing, how much total
- 9:41Speaker 8: baseball they're getting in a week, that's probably where you
- 9:43Speaker 8: can get into the most trouble. But it's hard, you know,
- 9:45Speaker 8: because like we said, you know how many kids are
- 9:47Speaker 8: playing on multiple teams and how many of them, and
- 9:49Speaker 8: look the kids are gonna do with the coaches tell them.
- 9:50Speaker 8: Then everybody wants to win, and I get it. I've
- 9:53Speaker 8: had those competitive juices we all have and you got
- 9:55Speaker 8: to know and to rein it in and it's it's
- 9:56Speaker 8: easier said than done.
- 9:57Speaker 5: I respect that.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So you work with a lot of young athletes, It's
- 10:00Speaker 3: is baseball by far the most that you feel like
- 10:03Speaker 3: probably come in just because like everything you just laid
- 10:06Speaker 3: out that, I mean, there's so many different games, there's
- 10:08Speaker 3: so many different coaches, there's so many different things that
- 10:10Speaker 3: unfortunately can go wrong. That probably like the highest volume
- 10:13Speaker 3: unfortunately right now, and you.
- 10:14Speaker 8: Sports, if we're talking like the overuse injuries, yeah, right now,
- 10:18Speaker 8: I will say a lot of other sports are making
- 10:19Speaker 8: a hard argument to catch up.
- 10:21Speaker 4: You know, volleyball has become year round, soccer coming year round.
- 10:25Speaker 5: I've had a lot of soft.
- 10:26Speaker 8: Tissue in soccer out of that, a lot of you
- 10:27Speaker 8: get a lot of volleyball, you know, it's a lot
- 10:30Speaker 8: of they are overhead, so a lot of shoulders, so
- 10:33Speaker 8: you know, it's a lot of the overhead stuff, you know.
- 10:37Speaker 8: And then you know, look a lot of the cheer dance, gymnastics,
- 10:39Speaker 8: all those are a year round and and you know
- 10:41Speaker 8: I've had you know, stress fractures and all kinds of
- 10:44Speaker 8: stuff and young young dancers and young cheerleaders and gymnastics
- 10:48Speaker 8: is brutal. Yeah, I tell everybody on on campus that
- 10:51Speaker 8: those are the toughest athletes we have out there. I
- 10:52Speaker 8: be the best athletes because that stuff they do and
- 10:55Speaker 8: what they have to fight through this time of year,
- 10:57Speaker 8: they're all banged up and and they've been doing for
- 11:00Speaker 8: so long. So it's it's like I said, it's baseball
- 11:02Speaker 8: is the one because of volume, because how many kids
- 11:04Speaker 8: are playing baball too.
- 11:05Speaker 4: It's a lot of kids, you know.
- 11:07Speaker 8: It's just like, look at my clinic, I'll probably see
- 11:09Speaker 8: more soccer related concussions than football because of howny kids
- 11:11Speaker 8: are playing soccer. So you have to take all that
- 11:13Speaker 8: into consideration with volume. But yeah, baseball, baseball is still
- 11:17Speaker 8: the king on that one. But like I said, there's
- 11:19Speaker 8: some people making a push.
- 11:21Speaker 6: I feel like there's got to be like there's probably
- 11:23Speaker 6: some baseball lifers out there that are disc that are
- 11:27Speaker 6: going to disagree and have all these stats back in that.
- 11:29Speaker 6: But like if you could just take a view at
- 11:32Speaker 6: let's say college baseball, there's so many pictures with elbow issues, right.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Lsho's had so many in the last five six years.
- 11:37Speaker 6: The elbow issues they keep them out for season, half season,
- 11:40Speaker 6: whatever it did. I feel like we were talking about
- 11:44Speaker 6: this before you came on, like back the back in
- 11:47Speaker 6: the day, like people would go out there and throw
- 11:49Speaker 6: double headers, so they would flow complete games all the time, right, Like, yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 6: and you'd never heard about this. So of course there's
- 11:54Speaker 6: media now you can hear about more things. But like
- 11:56Speaker 6: there's got to be some sort of correlation with the
- 11:58Speaker 6: youth sports today playing your round, just like you said
- 12:00Speaker 6: that repetition that wear and tear, like these ligaments are
- 12:03Speaker 6: rubber bands and an old rubber band.
- 12:08Speaker 8: Back in the day, these guys were throwing double headers,
- 12:10Speaker 8: but they probably weren't.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But they did it four months a year, and.
- 12:13Speaker 4: They probably weren't doing it when they were twelve. They
- 12:15Speaker 4: weren't doing it.
- 12:15Speaker 8: You know, they weren't throwing four double heads in there twelve,
- 12:18Speaker 8: you know, they weren't.
- 12:19Speaker 4: They were playing one game a week like we said earlier.
- 12:21Speaker 8: So so I mean, I do wonder about how you know,
- 12:23Speaker 8: I think I think a lot of it is these
- 12:25Speaker 8: kids that come in that we've had here at LSU,
- 12:27Speaker 8: so many of them have come in with elbow troubles.
- 12:28Speaker 8: I think the majority of them came in with some issues,
- 12:31Speaker 8: maybe not not having already had the injury, but they've
- 12:34Speaker 8: already get the mileage they've already got to wear.
- 12:36Speaker 4: And then also guys are throwing faster.
- 12:38Speaker 8: How many guys you've see now throwing ninety You know
- 12:40Speaker 8: back in the day that was crazy. If you have
- 12:41Speaker 8: one or two guys in your roster, let's go right now,
- 12:44Speaker 8: it's I mean almost all of our guys out there, Contron.
- 12:46Speaker 5: It's like a guy you never heard of throwing ninety four. Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 6: I felt like back in the day is like the
- 12:51Speaker 6: people that threw hard, you couldn't really figure out why,
- 12:53Speaker 6: But now we kind of know why with somelaw motion
- 12:55Speaker 6: and media, like people can coaches can explain how you
- 12:58Speaker 6: create your torque, how you create your leverage, how you
- 13:00Speaker 6: can actually levers throughout your body to create the lag
- 13:03Speaker 6: to the to the wrist of the ball to the arm. Yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 6: create that speed. Some people are doing it. The body
- 13:08Speaker 6: might just not be built for it, would you say, too,
- 13:11Speaker 6: like maybe some aren't conditioned.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Maybe the conditioning process to get to a point where
- 13:16Speaker 3: you can handle all the activity on your arm too.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I mean I feel like that is really important, like
- 13:21Speaker 3: to make sure just like any muscle. It's like if
- 13:24Speaker 3: I know I'm going to use this muscle during this
- 13:26Speaker 3: year for me, and it's gonna sound funny because I'm
- 13:30Speaker 3: a meat heead. Like for me, it was neck like
- 13:32Speaker 3: before we went into like a football season, I know
- 13:34Speaker 3: it's gonna play running back, fullback, and man, I was
- 13:36Speaker 3: gonna get some extra neckwork in because I did not
- 13:39Speaker 3: want to have stingers.
- 13:40Speaker 5: I want to have a strong neck, and that was
- 13:42Speaker 5: my thought process.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I think some of that too, is because like you
- 13:46Speaker 3: just you start this this season and you never really
- 13:48Speaker 3: gave yourself any time to recover, but then you didn't
- 13:50Speaker 3: build yourself back up to be able to handle those innings.
- 13:53Speaker 8: Yeah, I think I think that's a big part of it.
- 13:56Speaker 8: You know, I definitely remember doing the neck workouts as well.
- 14:00Speaker 8: We got plenty of those in. But yeah, I think
- 14:02Speaker 8: you know, it's it's and again it's when you're throwing
- 14:06Speaker 8: so hard. You know, we talked about the curve ball,
- 14:07Speaker 8: but the other thing is how hard are you throwing?
- 14:08Speaker 8: You know, these guys that are throwing just I mean,
- 14:10Speaker 8: that's a lot of torque to put on an arm,
- 14:12Speaker 8: right you're throwing you know, ninety to one hundred miles hours,
- 14:14Speaker 8: over and over and over, and and you know it
- 14:17Speaker 8: doesn't take much, and you know it's it's a you know,
- 14:19Speaker 8: one of my colleagues that told me, you know, you
- 14:21Speaker 8: kind of use the metaphor you think about if you're
- 14:23Speaker 8: going around a sharp bend and you're in like a
- 14:24Speaker 8: sports car, you're in a corvette, you're in a Ferrari
- 14:27Speaker 8: something like that, you're going quick around that corner.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just the slightest little little pitch of the slightest.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Little curve and all of a sudden you're going over
- 14:33Speaker 8: the edge, you know. And it's it's a lot different
- 14:35Speaker 8: when you're going in that that you know, pinto and
- 14:37Speaker 8: you're going slow.
- 14:38Speaker 4: You ain't gonna roll over the side.
- 14:39Speaker 5: You know.
- 14:39Speaker 4: That's me throwing. I'm not worried about an arm injury.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Probably I can't throw hard.
- 14:43Speaker 8: But these guys that have that elite arm speed and
- 14:45Speaker 8: arm arm velocity, you know, one little thing in their technique,
- 14:48Speaker 8: and that can happen from is my core strong enough?
- 14:51Speaker 4: Am I am?
- 14:51Speaker 5: I am?
- 14:51Speaker 8: I getting fatigued, my technique gets bad, and then you
- 14:54Speaker 8: have that injury. And that's that's I think a big
- 14:56Speaker 8: part of it.
- 14:56Speaker 6: I feel like there should be a baseball for pictures.
- 14:58Speaker 6: There should be a weight limit in four. You have
- 15:00Speaker 6: to be a certain weight to be able to throw
- 15:03Speaker 6: ninety eight and above. Like when the skinny boys do it,
- 15:06Speaker 6: they're the ones that get the problems. When Paul Skins
- 15:09Speaker 6: does it, looks pretty normal.
- 15:10Speaker 5: It's a large human.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, skinny boys shouldn't be throwing that fast yourself.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Is that your medical advice? That's medical.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Skinny boys got to create sewing that elbows out there.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Paul Skins is just like right in the tonnel.
- 15:26Speaker 4: We're going to talk to coach on that one.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Yeah, we'll get the study done.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I don't know if Big Youth Baseball is gonna let
- 15:31Speaker 2: us get that study.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Through, but yeah, document man, we look forward to it
- 15:35Speaker 5: every week.
- 15:35Speaker 4: We appreciate it, sir, my pleasure.
- 15:37Speaker 5: All Right, we will step away.
- 15:38Speaker 3: We've got Kim Mulkey joining us in about fifteen minutes
- 15:41Speaker 3: from now to kind of preview the SEC basketball tournament.
- 15:44Speaker 3: We'll do that for you much more when we come
- 15:46Speaker 3: back here on ot B Live from.
- 15:48Speaker 5: The Raisin Kine studio.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Off the bench, all right, go to go Tommy's dot com.
- 15:55Speaker 3: That's much better than your how G E A U

- 16:37Speaker 2: It happens.
- 16:38Speaker 6: I had to do it. I had to replace all
- 16:39Speaker 6: of my windows. Maybe you got a new bill to

- 17:26Speaker 5: But sell a grey shirt with the guys.
- 17:32Speaker 3: I sacrifice.
- 17:34Speaker 5: I knew you could not sleep.
- 17:35Speaker 1: With me off the bench presented by her Dental.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Oh my girl, you see.
- 17:50Speaker 4: The world.
- 17:53Speaker 5: But just anybody underrated hit hair Matt who sings a song?
- 18:02Speaker 5: I don't know mat listen to it. You're pretending, you're
- 18:13Speaker 5: pretending that you don't know who this is. You're not
- 18:14Speaker 5: being serious.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Is it Usher?
- 18:17Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 18:18Speaker 5: Dude, you know this stuff. Just be comforted.
- 18:20Speaker 6: I don't I didn't know it. You just you listened.
- 18:23Speaker 6: I don't thought about it. I mean I didn't hear
- 18:25Speaker 6: it was us. I hear an Usher song every now
- 18:26Speaker 6: and then when somebody plays it. I never had a record.
- 18:29Speaker 6: I never had his record, his disc tape.
- 18:33Speaker 5: I didn't know that. It just wasn't in my reperts
- 18:36Speaker 5: while growing up. His voice is so distinct. Yeah, very much.
- 18:40Speaker 3: You didn't listen to Usher growing up, so when you
- 18:43Speaker 3: made a I mean I heard the songs when they
- 18:45Speaker 3: were playing, and you made a mixed CD for Susie Q.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I never downloaded. I never illegally downloaded.
- 18:50Speaker 5: An Usher song. Okay, just stay with me.
- 18:53Speaker 2: It didn't get played on one of two seven.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Blaze, right, I knew, I knew that was coming.
- 18:57Speaker 3: But like Jimbo says Susie Q, right, when you made
- 19:00Speaker 3: that burnt CD for her that you put on there,
- 19:05Speaker 3: M George straight h carried away danger.
- 19:11Speaker 5: Great song, just trying to figure out your I mean
- 19:14Speaker 5: you passed out a mixed I'm not hating on anything.
- 19:17Speaker 5: It just wasn't trying to get behind the brain here,
- 19:21Speaker 5: which is scary.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I don't think I ever made any high school mixtapes.
- 19:24Speaker 5: You never made a burnt CD.
- 19:25Speaker 2: For what I did, not for not for ladies.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Really that's odd, right.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 19:33Speaker 3: I didn't meet my wife in high school, and I
- 19:35Speaker 3: know I did, but I'm saying, like, even before I
- 19:37Speaker 3: met my.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Wife, didn't have that special one.
- 19:39Speaker 5: You know, you didn't have a girlfriend. I had a girlfriend.
- 19:46Speaker 5: My singer late bloomer.
- 19:52Speaker 2: So focused on ball you know what I mean, I
- 19:55Speaker 2: wonder why my dad wouldn't let me feel curveball.
- 19:57Speaker 5: Okay, all right, start it all makes sense. Now.
- 20:02Speaker 3: If you're in Louisiana and you want the best possible care,

- 20:39Speaker 3: can just learn more information Oshner dot orgus Oshner dot
- 20:42Speaker 3: org Healthcare build here in Louisiana for Louisiana.
- 20:48Speaker 5: I don't know a Maza's me. It's me.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Like you know the mixed CD out there and I
- 20:54Speaker 3: may I started making the mix. Yeah, you know, it's
- 20:56Speaker 3: putting together a playlist. I thought about you when I
- 20:58Speaker 3: was putting this playlist together.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Here take this usher.
- 21:05Speaker 3: So YouTube use behind the glass here the two y'all
- 21:14Speaker 3: were a little bit obviously, probably right past the burnt
- 21:18Speaker 3: c D. Maybe it was more m P three. Maybe
- 21:20Speaker 3: share a playlist.
- 21:20Speaker 9: We did all the good Thank god?
- 21:24Speaker 5: Uh did y'all pass them out?
- 21:26Speaker 2: I did not like.
- 21:29Speaker 6: It was me, But I do remember buying that, like
- 21:34Speaker 6: that big roll of tower, the tower blanks. Then you
- 21:38Speaker 6: got the you could print out the they had the
- 21:41Speaker 6: custom templates, print out the sticker and.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I always just got stuck in her, never never popped
- 21:47Speaker 3: right back out. Yeah, your computer shivered when you bought
- 21:51Speaker 3: that Tower CD. The new line was about to give
- 21:54Speaker 3: it everything. And yeah, somebody said, not give up. That
- 21:57Speaker 3: was too respectable to put Limeware on the family canter.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I actually the family computer. I downloaded the O G Napster.
- 22:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:06Speaker 2: And then college was more like LimeWire people, not Rap City.
- 22:10Speaker 5: But do you all remember rhaps I do, but I
- 22:11Speaker 5: went I would. Rhapsody was a little after them. I
- 22:15Speaker 5: remember rap Limelier had a competitor.
- 22:17Speaker 6: It was the same thing. I think it was called
- 22:19Speaker 6: Kaza Kazza. And then later in college it was torrents.
- 22:23Speaker 6: You were download torrents that I don't remember, Uh, download
- 22:27Speaker 6: these torents. You can download whole albums in like two seconds.
- 22:29Speaker 6: And it was fit on a CD. Pretty well all
- 22:33Speaker 6: behavior out there, you know what else as well behavior.
- 22:38Speaker 6: We don't talk politics on the show, not a lot.
- 22:40Speaker 5: God, but pizza, pizza went up. Pizza sales around the Pentagon.
- 22:49Speaker 5: There's kind of something going on.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Makes a lot of sense, and so we don't talk.
- 22:52Speaker 6: We're not going to we're not going to like dive
- 22:54Speaker 6: into geopolitical We're not going to dive into them. But
- 22:58Speaker 6: it's real and yeah, it's but the pizza sales, you're saying,
- 23:02Speaker 6: keep your hand on swivel, keep.
- 23:03Speaker 5: You had on.
- 23:05Speaker 9: You like dominoes or props or whoever in DC, Like,
- 23:11Speaker 9: are you hoping for something bad to happen another international
- 23:16Speaker 9: conflict to spike these sales a little bit?
- 23:20Speaker 2: I think some.
- 23:22Speaker 6: I don't know, I don't know, but a lot of
- 23:26Speaker 6: pizza going around. I don't know if you're hoping. I
- 23:30Speaker 6: don't think everybody likes to admit that, but certainly a
- 23:34Speaker 6: lot of pizza. But we certainly praying for our troops,
- 23:40Speaker 6: playing for the people out there.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Anytime I hear pizza, I still think of Coach Miles, Like,
- 23:47Speaker 3: first day you.
- 23:49Speaker 5: Had the audacity to order a pizza in the classroom.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Pizza, I think a pizza.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Oh, straight to the classroom.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Yeah, somebody ordered a pizza to the classroom and everybody
- 23:58Speaker 3: had to run.
- 23:59Speaker 2: It's like, uh, that's time's a Ridgemont High.
- 24:02Speaker 6: No, no, And everyone had to watched them. Remember we watched
- 24:04Speaker 6: them run. I thought we had to run, and then
- 24:06Speaker 6: they had might we might have had.
- 24:09Speaker 3: We ran a little bit, and then they ran stadiums
- 24:11Speaker 3: and we sat there and watched them run stadiums.
- 24:13Speaker 5: But we didn't know this man.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I mean, he recruited me at Oklahoma State, but I
- 24:18Speaker 3: didn't know him, know him, knew coach Monkin Todd Monkey
- 24:20Speaker 3: was now the coach of the Browns. Funny enough, because
- 24:23Speaker 3: he was my primary recruiter. I talked to last like
- 24:25Speaker 3: once or twice. But the audacity to order.
- 24:27Speaker 6: Up, that's probably the from our age group and our team.
- 24:33Speaker 6: That's probably the most quoted Miles thing he ever said.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I would say that's one and take a lap, making
- 24:39Speaker 3: a long lap. It's number two.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 24:42Speaker 3: You probably didn't have to do that though a whole lot,
- 24:44Speaker 3: because it was like if you fumble it or if
- 24:46Speaker 3: you like hit a guy. Late quarterbacks probably didn't have
- 24:48Speaker 3: to do that very much. Actually, Marcus actually fumbled a
- 24:52Speaker 3: couple snaps. I do remember him happening to do it,
- 24:55Speaker 3: expect when you used to go under center.
- 24:57Speaker 9: I always say that if if you get in trouble
- 24:59Speaker 9: for something, didn't make it count, order you to pizza
- 25:01Speaker 9: to your classrooms a lead.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I like that.
- 25:04Speaker 5: That's a good one.
- 25:07Speaker 2: If it's a good pizza.
- 25:08Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, but that that's a good Did you share
- 25:11Speaker 9: with the class No?
- 25:13Speaker 3: I bet it was mister Gaddy's. Remember it used to
- 25:14Speaker 3: be right there, like close to key delivery. It was
- 25:20Speaker 3: by well where Louise is. Now that you said, what
- 25:23Speaker 3: was that when we were in college, it wasn't Louise
- 25:25Speaker 3: obviously Louise was down the road.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Was it a Wendy's?
- 25:28Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, dollar menu, chicken sandwich, lots of those.
- 25:37Speaker 3: All right, we were going to step away and uh
- 25:39Speaker 3: whuendn't we come back?
- 25:42Speaker 5: What was the segment?
- 25:44Speaker 9: What was herd CDs and running for pizza?
- 25:48Speaker 5: This was the wolf facts backs? What this was? So back?
- 25:52Speaker 3: You put all four brains together and we come up
- 25:54Speaker 3: with one in between two interview segments. Yeah, yeah, what
- 25:59Speaker 3: do we do? I could talk talk salary cap and
- 26:04Speaker 3: transition tag and franchise tags and.
- 26:08Speaker 6: Yeah, this is the quote I was trying to look
- 26:10Speaker 6: out when he was talking about Pama John's wanting disaster
- 26:13Speaker 6: to happen. I think this came from Churchill World War two.
- 26:16Speaker 6: I think other leaders have also said this, never let
- 26:18Speaker 6: a good crisis go to waste.
- 26:20Speaker 4: There you.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I like it, People don't love the message. People like so.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I mean, what other show can go from burnt CDs
- 26:36Speaker 3: and mister Daddy's to one of the best coaches in
- 26:39Speaker 3: college basketball, Kim Molkey this show, and we're gonna do
- 26:42Speaker 3: it when we come back here on TV.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Off the Bench, Off the Bench presented by Hoodental.
- 27:04Speaker 3: All right, welcome back he in OTV here live from
- 27:11Speaker 3: the Raising Kines Studio. Always our pleasure every single Wednesday
- 27:15Speaker 3: at eight point thirty to catch you up with the
- 27:17Speaker 3: head basketball coach of the LSU Tigers.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Coach Kim Mulki joins us now. Coach. Always appreciate it,
- 27:23Speaker 5: always look forward to it. Hope you're doing well, doing.
- 27:27Speaker 7: Great, guys, doing good. Just backing out of the garage
- 27:31Speaker 7: and the practice this morning and going to head to Rainville,
- 27:35Speaker 7: South Carolina this afternoon for a conference tournament.
- 27:39Speaker 10: So we're right in the sick of things absolutely, and coach,
- 27:43Speaker 10: you know, we've had a chance to catch up obviously
- 27:45Speaker 10: over the last couple of weeks, but just kind of
- 27:46Speaker 10: going back in one of the things that I love
- 27:49Speaker 10: if you have a you know, a tough loss against
- 27:50Speaker 10: South Carolina, but then have a gritty, incredible, gritty win
- 27:54Speaker 10: on the road, a and soul mess and then since
- 27:56Speaker 10: then you take care of Missouri and Tennessee at home,
- 27:59Speaker 10: you go on the road and get a great win
- 28:01Speaker 10: and a tough place to play at Mississippi State.
- 28:03Speaker 3: So the way your team's responded heading into this SEC tournament,
- 28:08Speaker 3: do you feel like you are in a great spot
- 28:09Speaker 3: because you've had a couple of different wins that have
- 28:12Speaker 3: been different ways. Some have been coming from behind, some
- 28:14Speaker 3: have been dominating the game, and this team and your
- 28:16Speaker 3: team look like you are heading into the SEC tournament
- 28:19Speaker 3: in a big way.
- 28:21Speaker 7: I felt all year long that we just haven't had
- 28:24Speaker 7: losses that have devastated us. We have had disappointments, you know,
- 28:29Speaker 7: misfree throws here, turn over there losing composure a little bit.
- 28:35Speaker 7: But if you look at our four losses, it's learning opportunities.
- 28:42Speaker 7: Did we get better? Did we lose multiple games because
- 28:47Speaker 7: of it? The only back to back game we lost
- 28:49Speaker 7: games we lost was right out of the gate in
- 28:51Speaker 7: the SEC, and I feel like we've grown from that now.
- 28:55Speaker 7: The conference tournament is not something I emphasized. Certainly as competitors,
- 29:01Speaker 7: we want to win it, but and you know, we're
- 29:03Speaker 7: going in the South Carolina territory as we do every year.
- 29:07Speaker 7: But regardless of what happens there, most important is the
- 29:13Speaker 7: the nca Playoffs, and we'll find out on Sunday the fifteenth,
- 29:16Speaker 7: do we host here and where we go? And that's
- 29:19Speaker 7: the fun part.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Coach, It's one of the things I look forward
- 29:22Speaker 3: to every single year, is kind of asking you about
- 29:25Speaker 3: the SEC tournament because every single year, I know you
- 29:28Speaker 3: kind of look at it a little differently. And you
- 29:30Speaker 3: know in years past you've talked about, hey, what did
- 29:32Speaker 3: we do last year? Okay, that's what we did last year.
- 29:34Speaker 3: We'll see if we can do one game better. Because
- 29:36Speaker 3: obviously the I is on the NCAA tournament. So as
- 29:39Speaker 3: you look at this current setup for the SEC Tournament,
- 29:42Speaker 3: you're going to have obviously a by situation where you
- 29:44Speaker 3: get a chance to kind of see what's going to
- 29:46Speaker 3: be in front of you there. Maybe what's the mindset
- 29:49Speaker 3: heading into this year's SEC basketball tournament.
- 29:52Speaker 7: Well, they've been off for two days since our last game,
- 29:55Speaker 7: So we'll get in the film room this morning. Oklahoma
- 29:59Speaker 7: is in our brack. Get in. They're sitting there waiting
- 30:02Speaker 7: to see who they're gonna play, and then we'll play
- 30:03Speaker 7: the winner of Oklahoma and whoever comes up. So we'll
- 30:08Speaker 7: prepare today and probably go over Oklahoma today and then
- 30:11Speaker 7: see what happens. But when we get on the floor,
- 30:14Speaker 7: it's gonna just be sharp. It's gonna just you know,
- 30:17Speaker 7: do some things to sharpen up what we need to do.
- 30:20Speaker 7: Rather that's transition defense, attacking zones, may be even working
- 30:24Speaker 7: on our presses, just anything that we may need, not
- 30:29Speaker 7: just in the SEC tournament but in the NCAA tournament.
- 30:33Speaker 7: So that's what we'll spend a lot of time on.
- 30:36Speaker 7: We'll congratulate the players that made All SECS, sixth Player
- 30:40Speaker 7: of the Year and Freshman Team, but we don't dwell
- 30:44Speaker 7: on that much. Those players know that with good success
- 30:48Speaker 7: as a team. Individual accolades will happen, but they just
- 30:52Speaker 7: move on and there'll be a hard work day because
- 30:55Speaker 7: we have to get up at six in Greenville and
- 30:58Speaker 7: practice on the court tomorrow for forty five minutes, or
- 31:01Speaker 7: if we choose not to do it, we won't be
- 31:03Speaker 7: on that floor until game time.
- 31:06Speaker 6: Yeah, we certainly want to get to the individual awards
- 31:09Speaker 6: and highlight them on this show with you. But but first,
- 31:11Speaker 6: let's talk a little bit more about this SEC tournament.
- 31:15Speaker 6: So you you took care of business, You did what
- 31:17Speaker 6: you had to do the last two games to secure
- 31:19Speaker 6: that double buy for the tournament. How much of advantage
- 31:22Speaker 6: do you think that gives you just being able to
- 31:24Speaker 6: see just the teams play in front of you once
- 31:27Speaker 6: maybe twice before you get the match. How big good
- 31:29Speaker 6: advantage is that for you?
- 31:32Speaker 7: Well, the advantage is resting, you know, the advantages they
- 31:35Speaker 7: start play today, And think about this, those that play today,
- 31:39Speaker 7: they would have to win five games in five days
- 31:42Speaker 7: to win the SEC tournament. And really that's unheard of.
- 31:47Speaker 7: And I always say SEC or should I say conference
- 31:51Speaker 7: tournaments or for two reasons one Cinderellas get an automatic bid.
- 31:56Speaker 7: How often do you ever see that on the women's side, yes,
- 31:59Speaker 7: you can see on the men's side, and I think
- 32:02Speaker 7: also it may be a money maker for some leagues,
- 32:06Speaker 7: and I would say it's a money maker for the men.
- 32:09Speaker 7: So I've just never been a big proponent of SEC
- 32:14Speaker 7: or conference tournaments, even when we've won so many there
- 32:17Speaker 7: at Baylor through the years. I mean, we won like
- 32:19Speaker 7: eleven straight SEC titles in a row, and then we'd
- 32:22Speaker 7: go and have to play in the conference tournament and
- 32:25Speaker 7: try to win that. It's just a lot of things
- 32:30Speaker 7: not good can happen if you're a high seed. You
- 32:32Speaker 7: lose man or is it a selection committee going to
- 32:35Speaker 7: a punish you for that, or even injuries. So I'm
- 32:39Speaker 7: not saying all this because I have a bad attitude
- 32:42Speaker 7: going there. We're competitors. We're gonna prepare just like we
- 32:45Speaker 7: do every game. But people know that. I think it's
- 32:48Speaker 7: just a waste on the women's side. But we'll prepare
- 32:53Speaker 7: and we'll go up there and try to win three games.
- 32:56Speaker 3: And to win it good enough with LSU had basketball
- 33:01Speaker 3: coach Kim Moulky here on OTB coach, what about the
- 33:04Speaker 3: NCAA tournament and you're going to be hosting it's going
- 33:07Speaker 3: to be here in the PMAC in ben Rouge. But
- 33:09Speaker 3: how much do you try to, if at all, do
- 33:11Speaker 3: you try to figure out maybe possibilities that you would
- 33:14Speaker 3: face and try to get a leg up on maybe
- 33:16Speaker 3: preparing for those teams or is it Hey, we find
- 33:18Speaker 3: out on selection Day and then we start to get
- 33:20Speaker 3: to work at that point.
- 33:22Speaker 7: The only thing I can tell you when we go
- 33:25Speaker 7: into selection Sunday is we're going to be in there
- 33:28Speaker 7: and we're going to host the first and second round games.
- 33:31Speaker 7: The top sixteen seeds get to do that. I never
- 33:34Speaker 7: ever know what our seed number will be, whether it's two, three,
- 33:39Speaker 7: it doesn't really matter to me. I've won when we
- 33:43Speaker 7: were one seeds. I've lost when we were one seeds.
- 33:46Speaker 7: I've won when we're two. You know, we won the
- 33:49Speaker 7: Natty here and we were a three seed. The other
- 33:52Speaker 7: part is you just do not know the other three
- 33:54Speaker 7: teams that will be sent to you. And that's a
- 33:57Speaker 7: good thing. That's a fun part. Think about this. We're
- 34:01Speaker 7: heading to the SEC tournament, guys, and think about who
- 34:05Speaker 7: we're gonna have to play. Is probably tougher than playing
- 34:09Speaker 7: in the NCAA tournament. When you get to a final four.
- 34:11Speaker 7: You've got South Carolina ranked third, You've got Texas ranked fourth,
- 34:16Speaker 7: You've got Vanderbilt fifth, worse six in some polls. You're
- 34:19Speaker 7: not gonna see that at a final four. That's how
- 34:23Speaker 7: tough this league is this particular year.
- 34:27Speaker 6: Because let's talk about in the in a fan obviously
- 34:31Speaker 6: the toughest conference and it's ultra prepared for the NCAA tournament.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Well.
- 34:37Speaker 6: In the SEC handed out some awards, so let's highlight
- 34:40Speaker 6: highlight those ladies a little bit with the Malaysia four
- 34:43Speaker 6: Wiley sixth Woman of the Year FLA Je Johnson First
- 34:45Speaker 6: Team All I see MICHAELA. Williams First Team All SEC
- 34:47Speaker 6: is at Kai Johnson all freshmen. Of course, it's about
- 34:50Speaker 6: the team and you're going to celebrate them quickly and
- 34:52Speaker 6: get on about the team. But of course in basketball
- 34:55Speaker 6: like you can't have that team without those individuals. So
- 34:58Speaker 6: certainly well represent of you and your squad and a
- 35:03Speaker 6: great to get those individual achievements for your team. Just
- 35:06Speaker 6: talk about them just for a moment.
- 35:09Speaker 7: You're happy for the individuals, I know it. It kind
- 35:14Speaker 7: of boosts their pride and boosts their confidence. But at
- 35:19Speaker 7: the end of the day, the type of program we
- 35:22Speaker 7: run is that maybe you don't get those awards if
- 35:24Speaker 7: we don't have good seasons, right, and so they understand that,
- 35:28Speaker 7: they understand the individual awards are not bigger than the
- 35:31Speaker 7: team awards, and so you acknowledge it. It but it won't
- 35:34Speaker 7: be long. It'll just say congratulations to you, guys. You
- 35:38Speaker 7: know awards. Guys, y'all know this. You've been in athletics
- 35:41Speaker 7: through entire lives. Awards are somebody's opinions, and sometimes we
- 35:46Speaker 7: get it right and sometimes we get it wrong. We
- 35:48Speaker 7: can't vote for our own players. We nominate our players
- 35:52Speaker 7: and then the other coaches vote for them. And I
- 35:55Speaker 7: have learned in forty years of doing this that there
- 35:58Speaker 7: are some really bad selections sometimes because coaches try to
- 36:03Speaker 7: protect their own and instead of doing what's right, they'll,
- 36:07Speaker 7: you know, lowball of kids so their kid can can
- 36:10Speaker 7: make it. And then there are those years where I
- 36:13Speaker 7: always wanted you to put your name on your ballot.
- 36:16Speaker 7: Don't do it anonymously. Put your name on a ballot,
- 36:19Speaker 7: because I feel like if you put your name on
- 36:21Speaker 7: a ballot when you vote, it's pretty much fair. I'll
- 36:25Speaker 7: give an example. Full Wally wasn't on the all defensive team,
- 36:30Speaker 7: but yet she's up for defensive National Player of the Year.
- 36:37Speaker 7: She's like, you know, it's so cute and funny, and
- 36:41Speaker 7: I'll just use me as an example. I don't give one.
- 36:44Speaker 7: I don't get more money, I don't care about Coach
- 36:47Speaker 7: of the Year any of that stuff. But it was
- 36:50Speaker 7: so funny to me. My second year at LSU, my
- 36:54Speaker 7: first year, I'm sorry. At LSU, we had that big turnaround.
- 36:57Speaker 7: Remember it's the team had won what's nine game and
- 37:00Speaker 7: finished bottom of the SEC, and man, we come in
- 37:03Speaker 7: here and we finished second in the league, biggest turnaround
- 37:06Speaker 7: in SEC history. And I get two votes for Coach
- 37:12Speaker 7: of the Year. I'm good with that, but it was
- 37:14Speaker 7: so aggravating to me because I then had to go
- 37:18Speaker 7: to the final four and pick up ap National Coach
- 37:20Speaker 7: of the Year. And I just thought that was so funny,
- 37:25Speaker 7: and you know, I didn't want either one. But it
- 37:28Speaker 7: gives you an example of, you know, everybody trying to
- 37:32Speaker 7: protect their own and everybody has different opinions, and I've
- 37:36Speaker 7: always believed give the Coach of the Year to the
- 37:39Speaker 7: people who win the league. That way, you take out
- 37:43Speaker 7: all the politics of everybody personal vendettas against each other.
- 37:48Speaker 7: You know, just give it to whoever wins the league.
- 37:51Speaker 7: That's that's pretty simple. But we were I was pleased.
- 37:55Speaker 7: I thought the awards were pretty fair this year. But
- 37:58Speaker 7: it's just kind of funny to me. You can't get
- 38:01Speaker 7: something in a conference, but then the national people view differently.
- 38:05Speaker 5: Yep, I love the way you put that because I
- 38:07Speaker 5: agree with you. Coach whole hardly. We see that too
- 38:10Speaker 5: many times.
- 38:11Speaker 3: And so you know, a lot of great players, though,
- 38:13Speaker 3: did get some of those honors, and Flaje Johnson obviously
- 38:16Speaker 3: is one of those players. And coach Senior Night just
- 38:20Speaker 3: happened not that long ago, and it's very cool to
- 38:22Speaker 3: kind of see some of the scenes and see the
- 38:24Speaker 3: fans appreciate Flage's career and what she's done and to
- 38:27Speaker 3: stay the course here and to play all four years
- 38:29Speaker 3: and you know, play meaningful minutes. Obviously big big part
- 38:32Speaker 3: of the team ever since she walks onto campus. And
- 38:35Speaker 3: I know you've coached a lot of great players throughout
- 38:37Speaker 3: your time coaching basketball, but I know Flage certainly one
- 38:40Speaker 3: of those players is going to hold a special place
- 38:42Speaker 3: for you.
- 38:43Speaker 7: Well, Fase was the first McDonald's All American that we
- 38:46Speaker 7: signed at LSU, and she has just been someone that
- 38:53Speaker 7: all over this campus. Everybody knows Flage. I don't even
- 38:56Speaker 7: think they know her last name. Everybody just knows big
- 39:01Speaker 7: Big Pou. How they say big po Right. She will
- 39:05Speaker 7: go down in the history of LSU athletics, not just
- 39:08Speaker 7: women's basketball as a household name. Certainly she will be
- 39:14Speaker 7: known for getting her ring International championship, but there's so
- 39:18Speaker 7: much more to that young lady that people don't even
- 39:20Speaker 7: know about. You know. She just always giving of her wealth,
- 39:25Speaker 7: always doing for people in the community. And we need
- 39:30Speaker 7: more young people now during this NIL era, to share
- 39:36Speaker 7: their wealth with people who need things. And Flage does that, coach.
- 39:41Speaker 6: I want to ask you one last thing. This is
- 39:44Speaker 6: a little bit off topic, but my wife showed me
- 39:47Speaker 6: something on social media this past week and it's it
- 39:50Speaker 6: made me laugh and think about you. Of course, it
- 39:53Speaker 6: was a there's this internet trend going out around there
- 39:57Speaker 6: and it's it's a video of mom that are youth
- 40:00Speaker 6: sports moms, and it says how I thought I would
- 40:03Speaker 6: be as a youth sports mom. And they're sitting on
- 40:06Speaker 6: the sideline golf clapping and saying go, Team Go, and
- 40:08Speaker 6: then it clips goes to a clip and it says
- 40:11Speaker 6: how I actually am as a youth sports mom. And
- 40:13Speaker 6: it's a video of you and getting very intense and
- 40:17Speaker 6: fist pumping and kicking and yelling on the court and
- 40:20Speaker 6: it's a fantastic And got just think that Kramer has
- 40:23Speaker 6: sent you. I got to hope that he's at least
- 40:25Speaker 6: sent you one or two.
- 40:25Speaker 5: Of those videos.
- 40:27Speaker 7: Okay, all right, you know I don't have social media,
- 40:30Speaker 7: but I have friends, and I have fifteen players, and
- 40:34Speaker 7: I have seen it and it is priceless. It's hilarious.
- 40:38Speaker 7: There's also a lady in California that puts stuff out
- 40:42Speaker 7: for sending dresses up, like, oh yeah, all this stuff.
- 40:46Speaker 7: So I have seen the fun stuff and you just
- 40:50Speaker 7: take it in stride. But I'll tell you ironically, I
- 40:52Speaker 7: was at the state tournament all day yesterday and hamm
- 40:55Speaker 7: and watching teams play, and I had this conversation with
- 41:00Speaker 7: coach and we were talking about like the coaches my
- 41:05Speaker 7: kids had, and they were like, oh, I bet they
- 41:08Speaker 7: were nervous, and I said, you'll be surprised. I said,
- 41:11Speaker 7: every coach that coach my kid will tell you. I
- 41:14Speaker 7: wish we had more Kim Malke's as parents and that's
- 41:17Speaker 7: because I understand. You don't get involved. You stay at
- 41:21Speaker 7: a distance, you clap your hands, you cheer hard. But
- 41:26Speaker 7: you know, it's just I guess they think I'm I'm
- 41:29Speaker 7: like evaluating their you know, coaching. I just don't do that, guys.
- 41:35Speaker 7: And I've played for some of the sorriest coaches throughout
- 41:37Speaker 7: my career. I played for some of the greatest coaches
- 41:41Speaker 7: in my career. It didn't affect me. It didn't make
- 41:44Speaker 7: me a worse player. You live and you learn. And
- 41:48Speaker 7: we had that conversation last night, and I said, you'll
- 41:51Speaker 7: be surprised. I said, every coach would love to have
- 41:54Speaker 7: a Kim Monkey because I don't get involved. If you
- 41:57Speaker 7: need me, call me. I don't wear the hurts of
- 42:00Speaker 7: the teams my kids played on. You know, I just
- 42:03Speaker 7: show up as a parent, and if it's an intense
- 42:05Speaker 7: moment in the game, you bet I get involved. I
- 42:08Speaker 7: cheer hard. They'll tell you at LSU when Kramer was
- 42:12Speaker 7: playing baseball, man, if he would strike out, I'd say
- 42:15Speaker 7: swing the bat, but not too embarrass them, you know,
- 42:23Speaker 7: just be involved, you know, and enjoy it. Because all
- 42:28Speaker 7: y'all have children, and I'm telling you what wonderful memories.
- 42:32Speaker 7: They don't they go away quickly. They grow up fast,
- 42:35Speaker 7: and uh, it's it's just a time, especially if you
- 42:40Speaker 7: if you grew up in athletics as you two did.
- 42:43Speaker 7: And the other thing I would say is if your
- 42:45Speaker 7: kids are not into athletics, don't push them into athletics.
- 42:48Speaker 7: Find what it is that they love and support it.
- 42:51Speaker 7: And that's just what I believe is if you're going
- 42:53Speaker 7: to do something, man give it everything you have.
- 42:56Speaker 5: Absolutely, Coach, you're the best. We look forward to it
- 42:59Speaker 5: every single weeks.
- 43:00Speaker 3: They've travels and good luck in South Carolina coming up
- 43:03Speaker 3: this week and we'll catch up again with.
- 43:04Speaker 5: You next week.
- 43:05Speaker 7: Okay, take care now.
- 43:07Speaker 3: All right, you as well, Kim Molke. You gotta have
- 43:09Speaker 3: to join us every single week here on OTB. We'll
- 43:11Speaker 3: take a break more on the other side when we
- 43:13Speaker 3: come back live from the Raising Kine studio.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Off the Bench, Off the Bench presented by Hoodental.
- 43:27Speaker 3: All Right, we appreciate coach Kim Milk joining us all
- 43:29Speaker 3: the time, and we go long with then we're gonna
- 43:31Speaker 3: do it every single time we have her own here.
- 43:32Speaker 3: But also want to take this final minute to tell
- 43:35Speaker 3: you a little something. The Pelican Roof has got going
- 43:37Speaker 3: on all right. So over at Pelican Roof and they've
- 43:42Speaker 3: kicked off the third annual Run with Rufus fundraiser. Every
- 43:45Speaker 3: single day this month, they are running a five k
- 43:47Speaker 3: in the Pelican mascot costume RUFUS to raise awareness and
- 43:52Speaker 3: money for someone in our community who needs it.
- 43:55Speaker 5: This year, they're raising funds.
- 43:56Speaker 3: For eleven year old Joel Moskovis, who tragically was shot
- 43:59Speaker 3: in the spine and leaving him paralyzed from the neckdown
- 44:02Speaker 3: and dependent on a ventilator. So Joel is currently undergoing
- 44:05Speaker 3: STIMSLL treatments and his family is working to raise the
- 44:08Speaker 3: money needed to continue those treatments this year, which could
- 44:11Speaker 3: help hen regain some function. The goal is forty thousand
- 44:14Speaker 3: dollars in every single donation helps Joel and his family
- 44:17Speaker 3: keep fighting.
- 44:18Speaker 5: You can find more information at runwidthrufus dot com.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Again that is Run with rufus dot Com off the
