- 0:00Speaker 1: Moto GP is back in Europe and the Spanish Grand
- 0:04Speaker 1: Prix was full of surprises. Now I know I say
- 0:06Speaker 1: that every episode, guys, but the Spanish Grand Prix had everything.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Marquees was a name in the headlines. Not for the
- 0:13Speaker 1: reason you may think though, and I cannot believe I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: saying this, but a Yamaha was on pole and on
- 0:19Speaker 1: the podium, and we had two Aussies also in on
- 0:23Speaker 1: the podium this weekend. We have got so much to
- 0:26Speaker 1: catch up in this episode, and as always, this episode
- 0:28Speaker 1: of Pittalk is brought to you by Shannons. I am
- 0:31Speaker 1: your host, Rinita Vmulan, and joining me is the man
- 0:34Speaker 1: who's got more hot takes than a Moto GP tire
- 0:37Speaker 1: on a Spanish summer afternoon, Mister Matt Clayton. Matt, I
- 0:42Speaker 1: am starting this podcast off with probably my favorite topic,
- 0:46Speaker 1: Fabio Colorado on the Monster Energy Yamaha took Pole after
- 0:50Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty four days, led in both the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Sprint and the rom Prix, and finished on the podium
- 0:56Speaker 1: after five hundred and sixty days. Tell me was that
- 1:01Speaker 1: on your Bingo card for twenty twenty five, No.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Aita, It certainly wasn't It's funny as you were reading
- 1:07Speaker 2: all of those numbers there. This is like terrible audio
- 1:10Speaker 2: content for a podcast, but I'm just grinning because I
- 1:13Speaker 2: always think Motor GP's in a better place when someone
- 1:17Speaker 2: like Fabio is up the front competing for something meaningful.
- 1:20Speaker 2: What was super interesting to me is that that's been
- 1:24Speaker 2: something that Mark Marquees was keen to bring up after
- 1:26Speaker 2: sprint race on Saturday, where Fabio crashed early on in
- 1:30Speaker 2: that race, and Mark basically said, we need someone with
- 1:34Speaker 2: Fabio's talent and the charisma to be up the front
- 1:37Speaker 2: end Motor GP again. And also just to see Yamahar
- 1:40Speaker 2: up there and look, Harath has been a huge circuit
- 1:43Speaker 2: for him in the past, first pole in the World Championship,
- 1:46Speaker 2: first pole in Motor GP, first time he led a
- 1:47Speaker 2: race in his first season, won his first Motor GP
- 1:51Speaker 2: race there in twenty twenty. But to see what he
- 1:53Speaker 2: did on that qualifying lap on Saturday. When you get
- 1:57Speaker 2: as old and cynical as I am, Anita, and you'll
- 2:00Speaker 2: understand this in like twenty five years time, there's not
- 2:02Speaker 2: much that really gets you out of your seat when
- 2:04Speaker 2: you're watching stuff like this. You watch things in the moment,
- 2:06Speaker 2: and as Kuaatero was going red sector red sector on
- 2:09Speaker 2: that qualifying lap, I actually started laughing because it was
- 2:11Speaker 2: so preposterous what he was doing on that bike and
- 2:15Speaker 2: that pole position lap was to my mind, the moment
- 2:18Speaker 2: of the year. It was unbelievable and you can only
- 2:21Speaker 2: see the reaction of his team. They were all looking
- 2:23Speaker 2: at each other saying, can you believe what this guy
- 2:26Speaker 2: just did? And his rival was just shaking their head.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, we can believe it because this guy
- 2:30Speaker 2: is so so talented. We've probably forgotten a bit about
- 2:33Speaker 2: it because it has been so long because Yamaha's dropped
- 2:35Speaker 2: so far behind the ball. But for one weekend at least,
- 2:38Speaker 2: it was super nice to see someone with that much
- 2:40Speaker 2: talent back up the front of the field and looking
- 2:43Speaker 2: like he belonged again.
- 2:44Speaker 1: No, honestly, for me the same thing. I was sitting
- 2:47Speaker 1: on the edge of my sofa just going, I cannot
- 2:50Speaker 1: believe that Fabio is doing this, because it's like it's
- 2:53Speaker 1: come out of nowhere. We know, like you said that,
- 2:56Speaker 1: you know, it's a circuit that traditionally has suited the
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yamahas and he has had great success here. I just
- 3:01Speaker 1: want to say, guys, I don't know if you can
- 3:03Speaker 1: hear this in the background, but I think there's someone
- 3:05Speaker 1: doing some work near me right now, so I'm going
- 3:07Speaker 1: to try and talk over this.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I thought there was about of three race going on
- 3:11Speaker 2: in your back yard. That's what it sounds like.
- 3:12Speaker 1: To me from my end. But carry on perfect. Yes,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I am at the track, but no like for Fabio,
- 3:18Speaker 1: seeing him on the qualifying see him leading the sprint
- 3:21Speaker 1: for the two laps before you crash, and then in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the Grand Prix for me, Matt, there was a hot
- 3:26Speaker 1: minute there where I was going, can Fabio win this race?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Can Fabio take the win here in HaRav Is this okay?
- 3:37Speaker 1: I always tend to ask you these questions. Is this
- 3:39Speaker 1: because it's a Yamahau suit of track that we saw
- 3:42Speaker 1: Fabio closer to the front or was it Fabria just
- 3:44Speaker 1: pulled something extra out this weekend?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Bit of column a bit of columb and I'll introduce
- 3:50Speaker 2: the column C here in that Yama house clearly making
- 3:52Speaker 2: progress and we can see what they're doing behind the scenes.
- 3:55Speaker 2: But yeah, look a fantastic track for Quashurraro. We know
- 3:58Speaker 2: historically he's really really good here her Wreath is funny
- 4:01Speaker 2: in that you know, it's been on the calendar for
- 4:03Speaker 2: so so long. Now it's one of those tracks Now
- 4:06Speaker 2: that you see modern day motor GP machinery there and
- 4:09Speaker 2: the speeds they're doing and the way they race, it
- 4:12Speaker 2: almost looks a bit sort of outdated. It looks a
- 4:14Speaker 2: bit small for MotoGP now, like it's awesome with the
- 4:16Speaker 2: crowd and the atmosphere and the tradition and the history.
- 4:19Speaker 2: But I was reading something on the weekend. I can't
- 4:21Speaker 2: remember who tweeted this, so apologies to whoever it was,
- 4:23Speaker 2: but they've said Herreth has become a bit like f
- 4:25Speaker 2: One's Monaco for Murdo GP in that it's so narrow
- 4:29Speaker 2: and it's got all the tradition in the history. It's
- 4:31Speaker 2: incredibly difficult to pass there other than a couple of places,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and it kind of feels like the sport has outgrown
- 4:37Speaker 2: it a bit. But it's still so cool that we
- 4:39Speaker 2: get to go back to a place like that. And
- 4:41Speaker 2: you know, I'm never a big fan in the narrative
- 4:43Speaker 2: it oh, this season only starts when we gets Europe
- 4:45Speaker 2: because we've had four rounds and all races have the
- 4:47Speaker 2: same number of points obviously, but there's something special about
- 4:50Speaker 2: that place at that time of year when the sun's
- 4:52Speaker 2: out and it's ram with people and they're going nuts
- 4:54Speaker 2: for the Spanish fans, and people are lighting firecrackers and
- 4:57Speaker 2: all sorts of other oh and s things that probably
- 4:59Speaker 2: wouldn't fly to Australia quite frankly. But no, Look, there
- 5:02Speaker 2: was a time in that race that I did think
- 5:03Speaker 2: considered to myself, like once Squatdurero had got through the
- 5:06Speaker 2: first lap, and then obviously Marquez had fallen, which we'll
- 5:09Speaker 2: talk about a bit later, you're thinking, all right, one
- 5:11Speaker 2: thing we know about Fabia, he doesn't make mistakes, so
- 5:14Speaker 2: he's not going to hand this to someone. Someone's going
- 5:17Speaker 2: to have to beat him. Yes, he threw it down
- 5:20Speaker 2: the road in a sprint. You could see what was
- 5:21Speaker 2: going on there. I don't think he necessarily cared so
- 5:24Speaker 2: much about that. It's like I just enjoyed seeing go
- 5:26Speaker 2: open road in front of me because it's been so long.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But in the Grand Prix, you were going to have
- 5:30Speaker 2: to beat him rather than him beating himself. And it's
- 5:34Speaker 2: testament to and we'll get on too, Alex Marquez. I'm
- 5:37Speaker 2: sure you know Alex Marquez has been this theoretical Grand
- 5:40Speaker 2: Prix race winner for a while, but he hadn't done it,
- 5:42Speaker 2: and so my thought was, all right, he's got to
- 5:44Speaker 2: go in Quadurero, who is really, really difficult to pass.
- 5:47Speaker 2: He's one of the hardest guys to pass in BO
- 5:49Speaker 2: to GP. And if you're Alex Marquez, you're thinking, my
- 5:52Speaker 2: brother's out of the equation. I better win this one
- 5:55Speaker 2: because there might not be too many other opportunities for
- 5:57Speaker 2: me to do it. And it's actually testament Alex Marquez
- 6:00Speaker 2: that he took the first real chance that he had
- 6:02Speaker 2: and did it decisively. He didn't wait. I think that
- 6:05Speaker 2: was pretty pivotal in the way he won that race.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But staying on the Quaaterero theme, I think, to my mind,
- 6:13Speaker 2: it's him, it's Peco, it's Mark obviously, and Jorge Martin.
- 6:18Speaker 2: They're kind of the fourth the modern day aliens for me,
- 6:20Speaker 2: like they are the guys. And we saw what Kuaaterero
- 6:24Speaker 2: did in the first couple of years when he had
- 6:26Speaker 2: the speed and the energy behind him. It not the experience.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Now he's got the experience, hasn't had the machinery. But
- 6:32Speaker 2: our caveat that by saying yet because It really feels
- 6:36Speaker 2: to me like Yamahara starting to get it together, having
- 6:39Speaker 2: Pramac this year, having that second team, two more bikes,
- 6:41Speaker 2: two more bikes worth of data. Jack Miller has played
- 6:43Speaker 2: a really important role there behind the scenes that shouldn't
- 6:45Speaker 2: be underestimated. It feels like the arrow for Yamaha, which
- 6:49Speaker 2: has just been a flat line since he won that
- 6:51Speaker 2: twenty twenty one title. He's finally starting to climb and
- 6:55Speaker 2: I'm here for it because the more variety we can
- 6:57Speaker 2: have out the front of the Ducatti Cup that motorgis
- 7:00Speaker 2: to come lately, I'm all for it. And he's just
- 7:02Speaker 2: absolute class when he's given something good to ride.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I just want to touch back on what you said
- 7:07Speaker 1: about the circuit there almost being quote unquote outdated. Do
- 7:12Speaker 1: you think that's why we saw that situation with Fabria
- 7:15Speaker 1: when he did get passed by Mark and we saw
- 7:18Speaker 1: that shaking almost like that dirty air because of the error,
- 7:21Speaker 1: because of the size of the track, everything like that.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But then count back to the amount of crashes that
- 7:26Speaker 1: we had this weekend and fast crashes, I think is
- 7:29Speaker 1: it more Beidelli crashing into the air fence causing the
- 7:31Speaker 1: red flag? Alex Rins. Didn't he find a fracture or
- 7:34Speaker 1: a crack in his wrist, even Miller crashing it in
- 7:37Speaker 1: the weekend. Is that because of this circuit and because
- 7:40Speaker 1: of how much the Meto GP bikes are progressing.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think where you notice at most it's not
- 7:45Speaker 2: even in the high speed zones. There's only really too
- 7:47Speaker 2: straight to Herreth anyway, and they aren't super long. To me,
- 7:50Speaker 2: it's the runoff at the end, off the side of
- 7:54Speaker 2: the track at fast corners. You see where more Bedelli
- 7:56Speaker 2: went off. Alex Marquez had a pretty decent size shunt
- 7:58Speaker 2: on the Friday. You only realize how fast these things
- 8:01Speaker 2: are going and how deep they are in the breaking
- 8:03Speaker 2: zones when they crash, because when everyone's upright, you just
- 8:05Speaker 2: take it for granted. But man, when someone comes off
- 8:08Speaker 2: one of these things, those air fences are obviously there
- 8:10Speaker 2: for a reason. It's crazy you think there weren't always
- 8:12Speaker 2: air fences there, But it's the cornering speed of these
- 8:16Speaker 2: things now and the effect of the dirty year just
- 8:18Speaker 2: washing the bike out from underneath you before you even
- 8:20Speaker 2: know what's going on. There are no small crashes there,
- 8:23Speaker 2: and that's part of There's a few circuits when they
- 8:27Speaker 2: made the announcement they were going to change to eight
- 8:28Speaker 2: fifties for twenty twenty seven because the sport it felt
- 8:32Speaker 2: that sport was outgrowing some of the circuits. The ones
- 8:34Speaker 2: that came to mind for me were definitely Harrath, that
- 8:37Speaker 2: first corner at Migello with that wall on when you're
- 8:40Speaker 2: watching it on TV to the right hand side of
- 8:42Speaker 2: your TV screen, the one that Mark nearly hit back
- 8:44Speaker 2: in about twenty thirteen twenty fourteen. That's one of those
- 8:47Speaker 2: ones that I always take a step back from the
- 8:48Speaker 2: couch for because you're thinking, oh man, it's not going
- 8:51Speaker 2: to take much for them to be a real problem there.
- 8:53Speaker 2: There's some of these tracks that the bikes have gotten
- 8:55Speaker 2: frankly too fast and too good for. So that's a
- 8:58Speaker 2: problem for another day. Yeah herezom me. Yes, it's harder
- 9:02Speaker 2: to pass. It's a bit one line that's pretty narrow
- 9:04Speaker 2: with these bikes, but yeah, just a little bit small.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And look, if there were ten of these sorts of
- 9:10Speaker 2: circuits on the calendar, I think we'd have a problem.
- 9:12Speaker 2: But it is a bit of a one of one.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I'm glad we're there. You certainly can't fault their passion
- 9:17Speaker 2: in the atmosphere of the place and one of my
- 9:19Speaker 2: favorite moments of the weekend. I'm sure you've noticed this too,
- 9:22Speaker 2: when the first few laps of the Grand Prix were
- 9:24Speaker 2: on and there was that huge brawl at the front
- 9:26Speaker 2: of the front of the race. You could hear the
- 9:29Speaker 2: crowd over the bikes in those first couple of laps,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and that. I love that sort of stuff because you
- 9:34Speaker 2: know how invested everyone is to what's going on. And
- 9:38Speaker 2: that first lap of that Grand Prix on Sunday was
- 9:41Speaker 2: outrageously good. I did rewatch it three or four times
- 9:45Speaker 2: the next day just to make sure I didn't miss
- 9:46Speaker 2: everything because it was so much going on back in
- 9:48Speaker 2: the pack. I was still so focused on the front.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I thought, oh I missed that. I didn't realize that
- 9:52Speaker 2: had happened. So, yeah, there was certainly a lot going
- 9:54Speaker 2: on in that.
- 9:55Speaker 1: First lap, wasn't There wasn't they even just Mark and
- 9:57Speaker 1: Peco battle, then touching it. They're overtaking, you see Fabio
- 10:02Speaker 1: then getting that little bit of a gap. You see
- 10:04Speaker 1: Alex when he almost ran into his brother early on.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 10:08Speaker 1: It reminded me of Peco and Martin end of last year.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Malaysia where it's just that battle, that intensity. But then,
- 10:16Speaker 1: like you said, yeah, there was the battles further back
- 10:18Speaker 1: in the field when it did start to get a
- 10:19Speaker 1: little bit boring at the end of the race where
- 10:21Speaker 1: we could see Alex was clearly going to win. Spoiler
- 10:24Speaker 1: alert there, guys, But yeah, we were seeing all those
- 10:26Speaker 1: battles further back, and I think that's good. I think,
- 10:28Speaker 1: like you're saying, this type of circuit does allow for
- 10:31Speaker 1: a bit closer in the championship and not just be
- 10:34Speaker 1: Aju catty Cup and then the best of the rest.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed. And it's funny too, like you come back
- 10:38Speaker 2: to somewhere like Herreth. You think of some of the
- 10:40Speaker 2: places we've been in the first few rounds. Qatar's one
- 10:42Speaker 2: of these massive modern Tilka dromes, as you know, with
- 10:45Speaker 2: crazy facilities and massively wide straits and access roads. Circuit
- 10:49Speaker 2: of the America's in Austin is Formula one track that
- 10:51Speaker 2: motor GP just goes to. So it's big and open
- 10:54Speaker 2: and the lapse almost a bit too long. Frankly, it
- 10:57Speaker 2: sort of league is a bit it doesn't it strings
- 10:59Speaker 2: the field out too much. And there's something about her
- 11:02Speaker 2: Reth with it being compact and a bit mad in
- 11:04Speaker 2: the first couple of laps. That definitely gets the heart
- 11:06Speaker 2: rode up. So I'm definitely here for that.
- 11:09Speaker 1: No wonder the fans and the stadium and then the
- 11:12Speaker 1: hillsides which just packed out this weekend. It was sorry
- 11:15Speaker 1: cool to see in the dark.
- 11:17Speaker 2: At about six am where they all turn up as
- 11:19Speaker 2: well their using their torches out of their iPhones to
- 11:22Speaker 2: see where they hell they're going. That was fantastic to
- 11:24Speaker 2: see that, So so cool, so cool.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But let's move on to Mark Marquez. Because the man,
- 11:30Speaker 1: the myth, the legend, Mark Marquez. When he crashed this weekend,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I thought about what you've said in previous podcasts where
- 11:37Speaker 1: the only person who can stop Mark Marquez is Mark Marquez.
- 11:43Speaker 1: To me that crash during the race, I'm probably gonna
- 11:47Speaker 1: get plaster sent. This kind of felt really silly. It
- 11:49Speaker 1: kind of felt like because Mark knew how he knows
- 11:54Speaker 1: the track, he knows himself, he knows the bike, it
- 11:56Speaker 1: kind of felt like it was just where he was
- 12:00Speaker 1: pushing too much but maybe also put a bit too
- 12:02Speaker 1: much pressure on himself to succeed here. I know it's
- 12:06Speaker 1: the circuit where it could also be on his mind
- 12:09Speaker 1: because that's the corner that he crashed on. Was the
- 12:11Speaker 1: corner where he did damage his arm back in twenty twenty.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I think it was where it nearly ended his career.
- 12:17Speaker 1: But is it because Okay, is it because Mark doesn't
- 12:21Speaker 1: know the limit yet on the Duke Caddy because that
- 12:23Speaker 1: Jewcaddy is just so good? Or was it Mark feeling
- 12:27Speaker 1: pressure of having to succeed here in her earth.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah? I don't know about the pressure. I think there's
- 12:33Speaker 2: he still have to remember he's only five Grand Prix
- 12:35Speaker 2: and two recent season tests into riding this particular bike
- 12:39Speaker 2: and he hasn't it sounds like a silly thing to
- 12:41Speaker 2: say he hasn't crashed it enough yet to know where
- 12:43Speaker 2: the libits are because every Saturday he goes out and
- 12:46Speaker 2: generally takes poland always takes a sprint winlets. That's what's
- 12:49Speaker 2: happened this year, so he doesn't necessarily know where the
- 12:52Speaker 2: libits are. We know what happened in Austin and he
- 12:54Speaker 2: ran too much across the curb was still wet from
- 12:56Speaker 2: the rain before the race. That was explainable, so perhaps
- 12:59Speaker 2: he's still poll needs to sort of build the data
- 13:02Speaker 2: bang up of where the limits of this thing are
- 13:05Speaker 2: on different types of quarters, the sort of thing he
- 13:07Speaker 2: never used to think about with the Honda because he
- 13:09Speaker 2: knew that bike inside out and you as you remember,
- 13:12Speaker 2: he would always crash his Honder but it always be
- 13:13Speaker 2: in practice. He'd never actually do it in a qualifying
- 13:17Speaker 2: or in a race. It was always in practice. He'd
- 13:19Speaker 2: find the limits and then stay just this, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 2: sendime to wide side of the right side of that limit.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So perhaps it's a bit of an experience necessarily with
- 13:28Speaker 2: that bike. Maybe a little over confidence quite frankly, because
- 13:31Speaker 2: you saw what he had done. I mean, qualifying, he
- 13:34Speaker 2: got beaten by an otherworldly lap by a fantastic rider,
- 13:37Speaker 2: but he was right there. Sprint race, just cleared off
- 13:40Speaker 2: and won that once Fabio was out of the way.
- 13:42Speaker 2: So perhaps a little over confidence. But saying spoiler alert
- 13:46Speaker 2: before and you don't know this, I'm going to spring
- 13:48Speaker 2: this on you now because I am a maniac with
- 13:51Speaker 2: this sort of stuff. I decided I was going to
- 13:53Speaker 2: go through every lap righter, every lap time of every
- 13:56Speaker 2: rider in the race to see where Mark's stacked up,
- 13:58Speaker 2: because I I needed new hobby, clearly. But what I
- 14:01Speaker 2: wanted to know was once Mike Market fished the bike
- 14:04Speaker 2: out of the gravel trap on lap three, and given
- 14:07Speaker 2: how broken that thing was, that was the thing I
- 14:09Speaker 2: couldn't believe. The side of it looked like it had
- 14:12Speaker 2: just been ripped apart by Freddy Krueger, and it was
- 14:14Speaker 2: missing all the aerodynamic devices down the left hand side,
- 14:17Speaker 2: which is a huge thing with the way these bikes
- 14:18Speaker 2: handled these days. And I thought, all right, with a
- 14:21Speaker 2: bike that you could have possibly parked it, given how
- 14:23Speaker 2: broken it was, how did his lap times stack up?
- 14:27Speaker 2: And here's the stat for you for the rest of
- 14:29Speaker 2: the race. He only lost eight tenths of a second
- 14:33Speaker 2: to the race leader over the last twenty one laps
- 14:36Speaker 2: while passing ten other riders with a bike that was
- 14:39Speaker 2: probably broken. So if you ever wanted to know how
- 14:41Speaker 2: good Mark Marquez was, and we don't, we've seen this
- 14:43Speaker 2: story a million times. Eight tenths of a second in
- 14:46Speaker 2: twenty one laps with a broken bike and advancing from
- 14:48Speaker 2: twenty second to twelve. That was just testament to how
- 14:53Speaker 2: much he has in reserve over the rest of these guys.
- 14:56Speaker 2: But you might have seen these comments. They sort of
- 14:58Speaker 2: came out a bit afterwards. He said his fastest lap
- 15:01Speaker 2: of the race on lap seventeen. Everyone else in that
- 15:04Speaker 2: front group set their fastest laps of the race in
- 15:06Speaker 2: the first three or four laps when their tires were
- 15:08Speaker 2: brand new, So Mark had that much in reserve with
- 15:10Speaker 2: a broken bike and old tires. But what was interesting
- 15:13Speaker 2: is afterwards he said he got to a certain point
- 15:16Speaker 2: with about five laps to go, and he started thinking
- 15:18Speaker 2: about twenty twenty at the same track as you alluded
- 15:20Speaker 2: to before, and if you look at his lap times,
- 15:23Speaker 2: he immediately drops out of the thirty sevens and goes
- 15:25Speaker 2: back into the thirty eighths. He said, there was a
- 15:28Speaker 2: group ahead of me, but I thought about twenty twenty
- 15:31Speaker 2: and I thought, okay, I will not exaggerate was his term,
- 15:34Speaker 2: I will not crash. So in old Mark would have
- 15:37Speaker 2: tried to go from twelfth to eighth in the last
- 15:40Speaker 2: three or four laps and possibly crashed. Twenty twenty five
- 15:43Speaker 2: spec Mark is like, no, I've got back to twelfth,
- 15:46Speaker 2: I've shown my pace. I've at least got some points
- 15:48Speaker 2: out of this, and I will live to fight another day.
- 15:50Speaker 2: And that, to me is the evolution of Mark, because
- 15:52Speaker 2: the old Mark wouldn't have been able to resist his
- 15:54Speaker 2: instincts to go and do something perhaps a bit crazy,
- 15:57Speaker 2: and if there's anywhere that is a painful remind of
- 16:00Speaker 2: what happens when you have a stepped the market's wrath.
- 16:02Speaker 2: And I can imagine he's having that internal conflict. It's like, yeah,
- 16:05Speaker 2: but these guys are just up the road, I can
- 16:07Speaker 2: do that, and his right shoulder is going I wouldn't
- 16:10Speaker 2: have thought, so, no chance. You've had four operations because
- 16:13Speaker 2: of what you did to me five years ago. We're
- 16:14Speaker 2: not doing this again. So he's probably got this internal
- 16:16Speaker 2: conflict going on, and in the end he kept his
- 16:19Speaker 2: powder dry and lift to fight another day.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Isn't it funny though, because like the old Marquees, like
- 16:24Speaker 1: you're saying, would almost go through and use the other
- 16:27Speaker 1: riders as the marker get to get to push out
- 16:29Speaker 1: of the way, like I'm going to just ram into
- 16:32Speaker 1: you or whatever. But yeah, this new Marquez is a
- 16:35Speaker 1: little bit older and wiser, shall we say, but talking
- 16:39Speaker 1: a stat so I'm going to shout out our friend
- 16:42Speaker 1: Simon Patterson here. I was listening to him. He was
- 16:45Speaker 1: saying that he showed Luke Marini a photo of Marquez's
- 16:49Speaker 1: bike on the side and Luke Marini goes, oh, that
- 16:51Speaker 1: would cause him to be about five kilometers now slower,
- 16:55Speaker 1: and Simon went back and checked the speeds and it
- 16:58Speaker 1: was right, Marquees with that was five kilometers an hour slower,
- 17:02Speaker 1: and then you see him go from twenty second to twelve.
- 17:05Speaker 1: The man is phenomenal.
- 17:06Speaker 2: With a bike that's got no performance on the strait,
- 17:08Speaker 2: so he's having to make it all up in the quarters,
- 17:10Speaker 2: and he's having to make it all up under breaking
- 17:12Speaker 2: because down the straight you've got like a wind blowing
- 17:14Speaker 2: through the middle of the bike where half the side
- 17:16Speaker 2: of the thing's been torn off and left in a
- 17:17Speaker 2: gravel trap. So, yeah, I did hear those comments from Simon.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I went back and looked at the speed trap and yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 2: he was in the low to mid two nineties for
- 17:26Speaker 2: most of the race and the other decadeyes, like de
- 17:28Speaker 2: jan Antonio was at three hundred. So he's shipping time
- 17:30Speaker 2: down the straits. That's free time having to make it
- 17:32Speaker 2: up elsewhere. But ye as you said, the man's a genius.
- 17:36Speaker 1: The man's a genius. So let me ask you this then, Now,
- 17:38Speaker 1: two DNFs in five Grand prixs, we know he's the
- 17:41Speaker 1: sprint king, so far this season. Is this hindering his
- 17:45Speaker 1: championship or is this just another bump in the road
- 17:49Speaker 1: for Marquez.
- 17:50Speaker 2: It's funny, like my first thought was to go back
- 17:54Speaker 2: to twenty fifteen, the title that he didn't win, the
- 17:56Speaker 2: only one he didn't win in those first seven seasons fifteen.
- 18:00Speaker 2: We don't need to discuss what happened to the end
- 18:01Speaker 2: of twenty fifteen. We've probably dicussed Malayia twenty fifteen about
- 18:03Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty times on this podcast. But you
- 18:06Speaker 2: go back and look at that season. He lost that
- 18:08Speaker 2: championship not because he was slower, It's because he crashed
- 18:10Speaker 2: away too much. And there were four guys, you know,
- 18:13Speaker 2: that was the two factory Honda and the two factory
- 18:15Speaker 2: Amaha guys that season. Marquez by himself crashed more than
- 18:18Speaker 2: Lorenzo Rossi and Danny Pedrosa combined that season. So that
- 18:21Speaker 2: was a championship that he threw away by not being
- 18:24Speaker 2: able to pull it up at the limits. And so
- 18:26Speaker 2: the difference between twenty fifteen and twenty twenty five is
- 18:29Speaker 2: if you have a non scoring weekend in a Grand
- 18:31Speaker 2: Prix in twenty fifteen, you end up with zero at
- 18:34Speaker 2: the moment. There's twelve extra points on offer for Mark
- 18:36Speaker 2: every Saturday in a sprint, and so far in twenty
- 18:38Speaker 2: twenty five there's a maximum of sixty points in sprints,
- 18:41Speaker 2: and he's won sixty points. So you can water down
- 18:45Speaker 2: the effects of a crappy Grand Prix or you know
- 18:47Speaker 2: Austin where he was leading and then crashed, only took
- 18:50Speaker 2: four points out of her earth and the Grand Prix.
- 18:52Speaker 2: The reason he's still where he is in the championship
- 18:54Speaker 2: is because he's unbeatable on Saturdays, and that's the card
- 18:56Speaker 2: he's got to play this time that he didn't have
- 18:59Speaker 2: ten years ago. So the sprints, now he's finally got
- 19:01Speaker 2: his groove. You mad to think he hadn't won a
- 19:04Speaker 2: sprint before this year and now he can't lose one.
- 19:06Speaker 2: But that's the thing that he's now got in his
- 19:08Speaker 2: back pocket in that you can still leave her and go, well, look,
- 19:11Speaker 2: i still won the sprint, and I still qualified second
- 19:13Speaker 2: on the grid, and I've still got some points out
- 19:15Speaker 2: of the Grand Prix. So yes, he's not leading the
- 19:18Speaker 2: World championship. That's the story. After five rounds. It's pretty
- 19:21Speaker 2: crazy to think that a guy who's won eight out
- 19:23Speaker 2: of the ten starts this year is not leading the
- 19:25Speaker 2: World Championship. But this is how it's going to be
- 19:27Speaker 2: for Mark this year. This won't be the last time
- 19:29Speaker 2: that he throws it down the road in a race
- 19:31Speaker 2: or does something silly, but he's so fast when he's
- 19:34Speaker 2: actually upright on the bike, and particularly qualifying that. Getting
- 19:38Speaker 2: back to the earlier point, who can beat him for
- 19:40Speaker 2: the World Championship, I think only he came because none
- 19:42Speaker 2: of these other guys either have the machinery or the
- 19:44Speaker 2: pace or both to be able to be on terms
- 19:47Speaker 2: with him.
- 19:48Speaker 1: So, as you said, the Mark is no longer leading
- 19:50Speaker 1: the points tally in the championship fight. And I mentioned
- 19:54Speaker 1: in the preview that it was another Marquez in the headlines,
- 19:57Speaker 1: and that's because Alex Marquez has finally won a Grand
- 20:01Speaker 1: Prix race. History was made with the Marquez brothers being
- 20:04Speaker 1: the first brothers to have won a Grand Prix, which
- 20:07Speaker 1: I think is pretty cool for MotoGP. And like I said,
- 20:10Speaker 1: Alex is back leading the championship's standings. Now for me
- 20:14Speaker 1: not to take anything away from Alex because he's won
- 20:18Speaker 1: a Grand Prix, but even he said when I was
- 20:20Speaker 1: reading on MotoGP dot com, that okay, when Mark's crashed out,
- 20:24Speaker 1: now it's my opportunity to be the stronger writer. Do
- 20:27Speaker 1: you agree with that?
- 20:28Speaker 2: Oh? Completely? I think you can see the way he
- 20:31Speaker 2: rode that race and he said afterwardss like, I've got
- 20:34Speaker 2: everybody else's measure here this weekend except for the guy
- 20:37Speaker 2: who I share the same surname as. And he's out
- 20:40Speaker 2: of the picture now. Whether he climbs out of the
- 20:42Speaker 2: gravel trap and comes home, he's not a factor for
- 20:44Speaker 2: the victory now. And so this was his day. And
- 20:48Speaker 2: you look at what Alex has done this year. That
- 20:50Speaker 2: GP twenty four is clearly very very sortied. The twenty five.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I don't think we've seen it anywhere near at ceiling year,
- 20:56Speaker 2: and it'll get there at some point. But Alex knows
- 20:58Speaker 2: he's on a good bike. He's in really, really good form.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I think his consistency has been outstanding the whole year.
- 21:04Speaker 2: In a straight head to head fight, nine and a
- 21:07Speaker 2: half times out of ten, he's probably not beating Mark,
- 21:09Speaker 2: But Mark's out of the equation. He had to win
- 21:11Speaker 2: that Grand Prix, not because you'll never get another chance,
- 21:14Speaker 2: but he's never going to get a better chance than that.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Now that that box has ticked, and it's a box
- 21:19Speaker 2: has been unchecked for so so long now since he
- 21:21Speaker 2: came in in twenty twenty. The next thing he needs
- 21:24Speaker 2: to do and he'll want to do, is he'll want
- 21:27Speaker 2: to try and beat Mark in a head to head.
- 21:29Speaker 2: And you know we've seen them have a couple of
- 21:31Speaker 2: you know, Grand Prix this year where thy land Mark
- 21:33Speaker 2: was kind of playing with everybody because he needed to
- 21:35Speaker 2: drop behind and get the tire pressure up and could
- 21:37Speaker 2: just pass Alex at will. Argentina wasn't as cruzy as that,
- 21:42Speaker 2: Like you could see our hard Mark was pushing in
- 21:43Speaker 2: Argentina to get back on terms with Alex in that race.
- 21:46Speaker 2: So there will be more races like Argentina down the track,
- 21:50Speaker 2: I think where Alex will have a chance to really
- 21:53Speaker 2: sort of plant his flag against his brother. What's super
- 21:56Speaker 2: interesting for me, and I'm sure you've thought this too.
- 21:58Speaker 2: We know in a fight how ferocious Mark is. You
- 22:02Speaker 2: can't tell me that in that situation, Mark's just going
- 22:05Speaker 2: to go, oh, yeah, that's just another guy. Like there's
- 22:07Speaker 2: got to be something in the back of your mind.
- 22:09Speaker 2: It's like, this is my little brother. You know. Mark's
- 22:12Speaker 2: always been like one of Alex's biggest supporters in terms
- 22:15Speaker 2: of his credibility and needing to be a motor GP.
- 22:18Speaker 2: We haven't seen that completely gloves off between the two
- 22:21Speaker 2: of them where you feel it's an equal fight yet,
- 22:23Speaker 2: But that's one of the things I'm looking forward to
- 22:25Speaker 2: for the rest of this season, and probably sooner rather
- 22:27Speaker 2: than later, before that GP twenty five gets sorted. It's
- 22:30Speaker 2: going to happen at some point because Alex is writing
- 22:32Speaker 2: the best he's ever ridden, and we know how good
- 22:35Speaker 2: Mark is when he's staying up right, So I think
- 22:37Speaker 2: that's one that we'll see sooner rather than later. I'm
- 22:40Speaker 2: so interested to see the dynamic between the two of
- 22:43Speaker 2: them in that situation, because I don't know. If you're
- 22:46Speaker 2: Alex marqueerres like, nobody expects you to win that head
- 22:48Speaker 2: to head, right, everyone expects that big Bro is going
- 22:51Speaker 2: to put you in your place. It's an awesome position
- 22:53Speaker 2: for Alex to be in because if you lose, everyone's
- 22:55Speaker 2: going to say, oh, well, we expected you to lose.
- 22:57Speaker 2: You were supposed to lose. But if you win, that's
- 23:00Speaker 2: a victory that is worth way more than just one
- 23:03Speaker 2: win and twenty five points because you stared down one
- 23:07Speaker 2: of the greatest to ever do it, and certainly the
- 23:10Speaker 2: best guy on this year's Grit. And if you managed
- 23:12Speaker 2: to beat him in a straight fight, that's massive credibility
- 23:14Speaker 2: for Alex, isn't it.
- 23:16Speaker 1: I think Mark being Mark and being how competitive he is,
- 23:20Speaker 1: And this is from experience of having a competitive brother
- 23:23Speaker 1: who never let me win anything. Ever, I think that
- 23:27Speaker 1: Mark won't back down, but it will deal it with
- 23:29Speaker 1: a smile on his face. I think Mark will be like, no, no,
- 23:31Speaker 1: like we're doing this. We're doing this, but the whole
- 23:33Speaker 1: time he is going to relish and love every minute
- 23:36Speaker 1: of it. And I also think for Alex, if he
- 23:38Speaker 1: does win and get that head to head and it
- 23:41Speaker 1: goes his favor, I think it'll be Alex stamping his
- 23:46Speaker 1: foot here and going, no, I do deserve to be here.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm not just Mark's brother, I am my own.
- 23:51Speaker 2: And isn't it funny, Like you said before that the
- 23:53Speaker 2: first pair of brothers who win Grand Prix, it's so
- 23:55Speaker 2: interesting because there's not you can't look back at this
- 23:59Speaker 2: and go, oh, yeah, this was just like when X
- 24:01Speaker 2: and Y were going against each other in nineteen ninety
- 24:03Speaker 2: two or nineteen eighty four or whatever. This is an
- 24:06Speaker 2: unprecedented situation where, yes, we've had siblings in Boda GP before,
- 24:09Speaker 2: they've never both been on the best bike at the
- 24:11Speaker 2: same time, and they certainly haven't been sharing podiums all
- 24:13Speaker 2: the time. And you think of that podium last year
- 24:15Speaker 2: at Saxon Ring when they were both on the podium.
- 24:18Speaker 2: That was the first time we'd had brothers on the
- 24:20Speaker 2: podium since I think it was the Ioki brothers, like
- 24:22Speaker 2: way way back in the day, like twenty thirty years ago.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Now seeing the two of them on the podium just
- 24:27Speaker 2: looks normal. It's not an outlier at all. So you know,
- 24:30Speaker 2: the next the elevator step of that is like what
- 24:32Speaker 2: happens if they start fighting one another for wins? Now
- 24:35Speaker 2: you expect there's going to be some other guys getting
- 24:37Speaker 2: in the way of that, like you know, Pecovnaira and
- 24:39Speaker 2: Couaaterero if it's more than just a one weekend thing.
- 24:41Speaker 2: But pretty interesting narrative, isn't it One we didn't see coming.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I don't think I definitely didn't see it. I honestly
- 24:47Speaker 1: thought this year was going to be Mark and Peco,
- 24:49Speaker 1: Mark and Peco the whole time, and now it's a
- 24:51Speaker 1: good seguay for us to get onto Peco because this weekend,
- 24:54Speaker 1: for me, it felt like Pecko was very vocal. I
- 24:59Speaker 1: don't know if you felt the same with this map,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but watching in park Firma after qualifying quick to point
- 25:04Speaker 1: out on the broadcast, Oh, the Marquers brothers. They exited
- 25:08Speaker 1: pit lane under a red flag. You know, straight after
- 25:10Speaker 1: the race. It was like, oh, I'm not happy with
- 25:12Speaker 1: this performance. I had never seen this side of Peco
- 25:16Speaker 1: before where he is so vocal. What's your thoughts on that?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Pecko to me, and we've sort of you know, you
- 25:24Speaker 2: you called him the professor of many podcasts ago and
- 25:26Speaker 2: I always think of that when you talk about this.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Pecko's the sort of guy. He kind of mentioned it
- 25:30Speaker 2: a bit in the post race on Sunday, where Mark
- 25:33Speaker 2: will just get on something and write it. He said,
- 25:35Speaker 2: like Mark can ride everything. Pecko's got this wire between
- 25:39Speaker 2: his brain and he's right wrist where unless he completely
- 25:41Speaker 2: understands what's going on with the bike and he can
- 25:44Speaker 2: get everything just so like just how he likes it,
- 25:48Speaker 2: there's like a disconnect with the level of trust and belief,
- 25:51Speaker 2: like Pecko wants to understand what's going to happen, and
- 25:53Speaker 2: then go out and try and make it happen. And
- 25:56Speaker 2: I've always said that if every race was held in
- 25:57Speaker 2: the laboratory, Pecko probably never lose because once you remove
- 26:01Speaker 2: all of the variables, we've seen how incredibly good he is.
- 26:05Speaker 2: We saw it all of last year in the year before,
- 26:07Speaker 2: and that he had this methodical way of working through
- 26:09Speaker 2: a Grand Prix weekend, and that you look at first
- 26:12Speaker 2: practice on Friday and go, Pecko's fourteenth. It's like, that's
- 26:14Speaker 2: a bit rubbish, Like you do that every Friday. And
- 26:16Speaker 2: then he'd get into Q two and he'd be like
- 26:18Speaker 2: seventh or eighth, that was a bit underwhelming. And then
- 26:21Speaker 2: he'd come out on Saturday and you go, oh, okay,
- 26:23Speaker 2: because he'd taken all the data from Friday night and
- 26:26Speaker 2: he poured over that, and I can break a bit
- 26:28Speaker 2: deeper into this corner, and I can get on the
- 26:30Speaker 2: throttle a bit earlier. In this corner. He builds his
- 26:33Speaker 2: understanding and then he executes the understanding. Whereas Marko ride
- 26:37Speaker 2: around with a bike missing half of its arrow and
- 26:39Speaker 2: shredded like a cheese great as attack the thing, and
- 26:41Speaker 2: he would still do what he did on Sunday. I
- 26:44Speaker 2: love the way that both these guys are coming at
- 26:45Speaker 2: the same conclusion from totally different angles. And I think
- 26:48Speaker 2: the thing for Peco at the moment, he's frustrated in
- 26:52Speaker 2: that it's not a matter that he understands what the
- 26:54Speaker 2: issues are with the bike and he's just not fixing them.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I don't think he's got an understanding of what it
- 26:59Speaker 2: is that's bothering him on this particular bike relative to
- 27:02Speaker 2: last year, and it's the not knowing that's bothering him,
- 27:05Speaker 2: and it's the not knowing that's causing him to maybe
- 27:08Speaker 2: not second guess himself. But he doesn't completely believe yet
- 27:12Speaker 2: in what the bike is doing because he's got a
- 27:13Speaker 2: lot of questions about it. Now, will the bike get
- 27:16Speaker 2: better and will they gain more knowledge on that? Yes,
- 27:18Speaker 2: But at the moment it just encapsulates the way he
- 27:21Speaker 2: goes racing. He's a guy who uses his brain, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 2: and I mean this in an endearing way. He uses
- 27:26Speaker 2: his brain in a way that he wants to understand
- 27:29Speaker 2: what he's got at his disposal, and then once he
- 27:32Speaker 2: gets that. We've seen race weekends where he is completely untouchable.
- 27:37Speaker 2: We saw it last year. A couple of race weekends
- 27:39Speaker 2: where it looked like the others were in a different class,
- 27:42Speaker 2: where he'll be on pole, he'll win the first lap
- 27:45Speaker 2: and then you don't see him and he makes no
- 27:47Speaker 2: mistakes and you almost forget he's in the race, and go, oh,
- 27:49Speaker 2: Pecko won by four seconds, because that's the way Pecko
- 27:52Speaker 2: likes to go racing. At the moment, he doesn't have
- 27:54Speaker 2: the confidence in what he has underneath him to be
- 27:56Speaker 2: able to go and do that. So I think it's
- 27:58Speaker 2: just a bit of frustration, bit of touchiness. I mean,
- 28:01Speaker 2: it's got to be playing on his mind that a
- 28:03Speaker 2: guy has come into his team and I'll use that
- 28:05Speaker 2: in air quotes and won all of these races early on.
- 28:08Speaker 2: But I think the key thing for me, and this
- 28:12Speaker 2: is an underrated part of his season so far, it's
- 28:14Speaker 2: the best actual start to a season he's ever had
- 28:16Speaker 2: in terms of consistent results. He's only twenty points off
- 28:18Speaker 2: the championship lead. It feels like he's sixty points off
- 28:21Speaker 2: the championship lead. He's right there because Mark squandered some points.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Peco hasn't left too much on the table at the moment.
- 28:28Speaker 2: So in terms of your championship position, he's in a
- 28:30Speaker 2: really good position points wise, it just doesn't feel like
- 28:33Speaker 2: it because we haven't had the high points this year
- 28:35Speaker 2: so far.
- 28:36Speaker 1: No, you're right there, it doesn't feel like it. I
- 28:38Speaker 1: think coming back to what I was kind of asking,
- 28:41Speaker 1: was it just feels like because he is so down
- 28:44Speaker 1: that you forget. Yeah, he is fighting for that top
- 28:46Speaker 1: step in the points tally right now. I was looking
- 28:49Speaker 1: at the post test because they had a test there
- 28:52Speaker 1: on Monday in Herrath and it said that he's found
- 28:55Speaker 1: a couple of improvements. So maybe this alludes to what
- 28:57Speaker 1: you're saying there. It's that he's not entirely comfortable, not
- 29:01Speaker 1: feeling a hundred cent on the bike, but like you said,
- 29:05Speaker 1: struggling to find those improvements because we know this year
- 29:08Speaker 1: they're on like a GP twenty four point one, Like
- 29:11Speaker 1: they're not on a GP twenty five at all?
- 29:13Speaker 2: Are they twenty four points? Subthing? They get changes over
- 29:16Speaker 2: the course of the race weekend. But you hit on
- 29:18Speaker 2: an important point there. There's so little testing in Moto
- 29:20Speaker 2: GP through the season, right there's only three in season tests.
- 29:23Speaker 2: The twenty four that Alex is on are doing so
- 29:26Speaker 2: well on. I wouldn't say that's completely frozen. But there's
- 29:29Speaker 2: not going to be a whole even new stuff going
- 29:30Speaker 2: to that bike. The twenty four point eight nine twenty five,
- 29:34Speaker 2: whatever the hell it is cool the twenty five. The
- 29:36Speaker 2: twenty five is going to get better over the course
- 29:38Speaker 2: of the season because they're going to keep bringing developments
- 29:41Speaker 2: to it to make it faster, and it's going to
- 29:43Speaker 2: be up to Alex Marquez to The gap between the
- 29:46Speaker 2: twenty four and the twenty five in terms of machinery
- 29:48Speaker 2: is only going to increase, So Alex is going to
- 29:50Speaker 2: and Franka Morberdelli they're going to have to really step
- 29:53Speaker 2: up what they're doing on a bike that's kind of
- 29:55Speaker 2: reached the end of its development cycle. The twenty five
- 29:57Speaker 2: is going to get better, and I think as it
- 29:59Speaker 2: gets it's better. I think you'll see Pecko start to rise.
- 30:02Speaker 2: I still think it's a championship to be fought out
- 30:05Speaker 2: between the two factory Decady teammates the fact that Peko's
- 30:08Speaker 2: been a bit sort of bar so far and he's
- 30:11Speaker 2: only nineteen points behind Mark. That's like a massive win
- 30:14Speaker 2: for these first five rounds for me.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes clear sense. Like I think the next
- 30:18Speaker 1: test is Aragon, so it's only three or four races away,
- 30:22Speaker 1: and then they're having another test, another test, another test again.
- 30:24Speaker 1: So I do agree we're going to start to see
- 30:26Speaker 1: that difference. Is this kind of where we're going to
- 30:29Speaker 1: see Alex Marquez maybe not necessarily having that chance to
- 30:34Speaker 1: fight with his brother or be he's going to be
- 30:36Speaker 1: on the podiums at some of these events, like we
- 30:38Speaker 1: know that, but also so as ferminality gay because we're
- 30:41Speaker 1: seeing him fight closer to the front, we're seeing the
- 30:44Speaker 1: VR forty six machines. There is this where we're going
- 30:47Speaker 1: to see that jump and Pecko is going to be
- 30:49Speaker 1: definitively up the top more often.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think. I think once the bike gets better
- 30:54Speaker 2: and he begins to understand it more. I mean we're
- 30:56Speaker 2: still super early in the season, right, still seventeen rounds
- 30:58Speaker 2: to go, Like you forget about that. Seventeen rounds used
- 31:00Speaker 2: to be the entire Motor GP season back in the day.
- 31:03Speaker 1: But it feels like we're like four hundred races in already.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, because every weekend's got to No, I know
- 31:07Speaker 2: what you mean. It does feel like that. It's like
- 31:09Speaker 2: all the lights are going out again, but the other
- 31:11Speaker 2: guy to keep an eye on for me in that
- 31:13Speaker 2: same boat as Degen Antonio because he's also ot A
- 31:15Speaker 2: twenty five and he has been a bit He's been okay.
- 31:20Speaker 2: We know that he was super compromised after the preseason
- 31:22Speaker 2: and hurting himself again and everything else. He's a guy
- 31:25Speaker 2: that I expect to move forwards, and not that I'm
- 31:29Speaker 2: peering into the crystal ball too much. I reckon he
- 31:31Speaker 2: wins a Grand Prix or two before the end of
- 31:33Speaker 2: this year, because he's going to be to me in
- 31:35Speaker 2: the back half of the season. He'll be the guy
- 31:38Speaker 2: that's there like Alex has been at the moment on
- 31:41Speaker 2: the days where Mark drops the ball or Pecko's a
- 31:43Speaker 2: bit off or whatever it is. To Jen, Antonio is
- 31:45Speaker 2: going to have the machinery. He's getting better physically week
- 31:48Speaker 2: by week. I expect that he will rise as the
- 31:51Speaker 2: season goes on, because let's be honest, if you're going
- 31:53Speaker 2: to win a Motor GP race, you want to be
- 31:54Speaker 2: on a decaddy. There's only six of them this year,
- 31:57Speaker 2: and he's got one of the better ones, so I
- 31:59Speaker 2: do think he'll be coming forwards.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Let's talk on the other writer who's kind of just
- 32:04Speaker 1: been there these last two races. Maverick Vinalas leading the
- 32:08Speaker 1: way for KTM this weekend, finished fourth in Sunday's Grand Prix. Obviously,
- 32:13Speaker 1: Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta not far behind. I think
- 32:15Speaker 1: they were sixth and seventh. Maverick said he found a
- 32:20Speaker 1: balance in the KTM this weekend. And obviously we spoke
- 32:24Speaker 1: about this in the previous part. It's bat mav that
- 32:27Speaker 1: we're talking about here, but it seems like Maverick's the
- 32:31Speaker 1: only writer who's really saying the positive things about the
- 32:34Speaker 1: RC sixteen this season.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting, isn't that? Like Brad Binder like to
- 32:39Speaker 2: take our listeners behind the curtain here. Brad Binder is
- 32:42Speaker 2: lovely guy, you know, good English speaker, friendly and what
- 32:44Speaker 2: have you. Never gives you too much as far as
- 32:46Speaker 2: the press stuff goes like. He's very sort of straight
- 32:49Speaker 2: up and down, which is the way he is, whether
- 32:50Speaker 2: he wins all losers. I appreciate the consistency with Brad,
- 32:53Speaker 2: but he's never going to really wear his heart on
- 32:55Speaker 2: his sleeve with these sorts of things. Pedro Acosta and
- 32:58Speaker 2: now that's an interesting story because you're wondering how keen
- 33:01Speaker 2: he is to be there and there's offers from elsewhere,
- 33:03Speaker 2: and so on and so forth. Maverick Vinale is it's
- 33:05Speaker 2: not that the fact that the glasses half full. For
- 33:07Speaker 2: Maverick at the moment, the glass is so full that
- 33:09Speaker 2: it's spilling over the sides and he's got to go
- 33:10Speaker 2: and get another one because he's just so optimistic about
- 33:13Speaker 2: everything at the moment. Because we know that when things
- 33:17Speaker 2: are good for Maverick, he tends to ride the emotional
- 33:19Speaker 2: rollercoaster a little bit, super confident, super happy to be there.
- 33:22Speaker 2: And so the question after Katar Qatar is one of
- 33:25Speaker 2: those race weekends where we go, well, here's one of
- 33:28Speaker 2: our two weekends a year where Maverick Vanillas looks like
- 33:30Speaker 2: the greatest Bodo GP rider of all time. I fully
- 33:34Speaker 2: expected him to go, oh yeah, Maverick Vinalez was in
- 33:36Speaker 2: the race. When I look down the classification at the
- 33:38Speaker 2: end of the race and oh, he's thirteenth or something,
- 33:40Speaker 2: and you expected that to be there. He was really
- 33:42Speaker 2: really good all weekend and the line that you just
- 33:45Speaker 2: said before that I kind of grinned at when you
- 33:47Speaker 2: said it. He was the best KTM over the course
- 33:49Speaker 2: of the weekend. And what was so funny at the
- 33:51Speaker 2: start of the year is that you're thinking, all right,
- 33:53Speaker 2: a Costas in the main team. He's the young he's
- 33:55Speaker 2: the young guy. He's got all the talent. We know,
- 33:58Speaker 2: he's got all the belief. He's got a great benchmark
- 34:00Speaker 2: in binder because we'll find out how good a Costa
- 34:02Speaker 2: is because Binda is such a proven commodity. And then
- 34:05Speaker 2: you had Bastini and Vignales at Tech three, who both
- 34:09Speaker 2: aren't shall we say renowned for being able to be
- 34:11Speaker 2: that versatile in the way they go racing. Like Bastianini's
- 34:14Speaker 2: got his one trick, which is to be rubbish at
- 34:17Speaker 2: qualifying and there'd be amazing with entire life in the
- 34:19Speaker 2: race and overtake everybody in the last few laps. It's
- 34:21Speaker 2: how he's won pretty much every race he's won. And
- 34:23Speaker 2: Vignales is a guy that it took him so long
- 34:26Speaker 2: to do anything on an Aprillia, then he got to Aprilia,
- 34:29Speaker 2: finally had some good results and then left because he's
- 34:32Speaker 2: Maverick Vinalees. So the fact that he has emerged is
- 34:36Speaker 2: the sort of shining light for KTM. It's been a
- 34:38Speaker 2: weird six months or for KTM with on a lot
- 34:41Speaker 2: of counts but the fact that you said, oh, yeah,
- 34:44Speaker 2: Maverick Vinalez is the most convincing ktm rid right now.
- 34:46Speaker 2: It's okay, sure, because I'm prepared to believe anything with
- 34:50Speaker 2: Maverick because when it's good, it's very very good.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah, there's Mapic, that's Batman in a nutshell. That is him.
- 34:57Speaker 1: But you mentioned Pedro Acossa there. The news came out
- 35:00Speaker 1: post Monday's test that he had They're calling it a
- 35:03Speaker 1: surprising surgery to treat chronic compartment syndrome in his right forum.
- 35:09Speaker 1: And is him pump Yeah, yeah, that's why I was
- 35:11Speaker 1: just like it is arm Palm saying that he's expected
- 35:14Speaker 1: to return for the French Grand Prix, which we know
- 35:17Speaker 1: is in not this weekend, the following weekend in May, mom,
- 35:21Speaker 1: and that we in May already. Do you think that
- 35:26Speaker 1: him struggling with his arm pub Is this the reason
- 35:28Speaker 1: why Pedro hasn't been where we've thought he has been
- 35:31Speaker 1: so far this season? Or is it because of the
- 35:34Speaker 1: drama going on katm and the other offers, et cetera,
- 35:38Speaker 1: et cetera.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, look, one of the best things about
- 35:41Speaker 2: Pedro Acosta is that he's very impatient for success and
- 35:44Speaker 2: One of the worst things about Pedro Acosta is that
- 35:46Speaker 2: he's very impatient for success. And he's five races into
- 35:50Speaker 2: racing for katm's full factory team. He's got the big promotion,
- 35:53Speaker 2: he's been with them forever, and he's not super happy
- 35:57Speaker 2: right now. He's very, very, very frustrated, and because he
- 36:00Speaker 2: had this crazy sort of performance curve to get into
- 36:04Speaker 2: Motor GP in the first place, like one motor three
- 36:06Speaker 2: really quickly, one motor two really quickly. The impatience is
- 36:10Speaker 2: what makes him great, but the impatience is what is
- 36:13Speaker 2: probably hurting him right now because every press debrief that
- 36:17Speaker 2: he does, and if Bike's had body language, you could
- 36:19Speaker 2: see this as well. You could feel the frustration because
- 36:23Speaker 2: he wants to be up the front right now and
- 36:26Speaker 2: I don't want to talk about this like this just
- 36:27Speaker 2: needs to happen, and so look the arm pumped thing.
- 36:31Speaker 2: These guys go through this all the time. Anyways. I'm
- 36:33Speaker 2: not sure it's a huge drama in that respect, but
- 36:36Speaker 2: there's a soup. There's just a really heightened level of
- 36:39Speaker 2: frustration with him because how rapid his rise has been
- 36:43Speaker 2: through the junior classes, and the impatience is what makes
- 36:47Speaker 2: him great. But right now, that's not a bike that
- 36:53Speaker 2: it's not a race winning or race contending victory contending
- 36:57Speaker 2: bike because it's not a Ducati. So if you're him,
- 37:00Speaker 2: you've been with KTM all the time, there's all this discussion.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Do you try and get out of that contract? Do
- 37:05Speaker 2: you try and get on a satellite? Satellite? Do you Catti?
- 37:09Speaker 2: It's going to cost a lot to buy and out
- 37:10Speaker 2: of that contract. The only place he could probably go
- 37:13Speaker 2: with BVR forty six. Do VR forty six have the
- 37:15Speaker 2: money to buy out a KTM factory contract? Spoiler, No,
- 37:18Speaker 2: they don't. If they were to move for a cost,
- 37:22Speaker 2: that would mean Valentino Rossi, you'd have to get rid
- 37:24Speaker 2: of Franko morber Delhi because he's the one on the
- 37:26Speaker 2: shorter contract and he's a Rossi protege all of that.
- 37:29Speaker 2: So that's another factor. And then the other question is
- 37:32Speaker 2: you've seen his name linked with Honda, which is interesting
- 37:38Speaker 2: to me because again it's not going to solve Pedro's
- 37:42Speaker 2: impatience next week, but Honda with a new rule set
- 37:46Speaker 2: coming in, and you know they'll throw every available resource
- 37:49Speaker 2: at that thing. If there was a factory that was
- 37:51Speaker 2: going to get twenty twenty seven, right, that's not right
- 37:54Speaker 2: at the front. Right now, I'd put a fair bit
- 37:55Speaker 2: of money on Honda because you know they're not going
- 37:57Speaker 2: to die wondering with this thing. The problem is Acosta
- 38:00Speaker 2: is impatient because something's not happening now. Having to sell
- 38:03Speaker 2: him on a vision, it's like, oh, can you just
- 38:05Speaker 2: ride around in circles until twenty twenty seven when we
- 38:07Speaker 2: might be good. I'm not sure that's going to make
- 38:09Speaker 2: him feel any better either. So yeah, he is a
- 38:12Speaker 2: very very frustrated young man at the moment, and we
- 38:14Speaker 2: know how good he is. But it's just the fact
- 38:17Speaker 2: of modern day motor gp that unless you get Fabio
- 38:19Speaker 2: Couaderrara on a Yabaha at Herreth, which is a perfect
- 38:22Speaker 2: marriage of a lot of things, it's hard to see
- 38:25Speaker 2: how this gets any better for anyone not riding a
- 38:27Speaker 2: ducaddi for the short term.
- 38:28Speaker 1: When Marquez made the change from Honda to ju Caddie,
- 38:32Speaker 1: I was god smacks because I didn't think he would
- 38:35Speaker 1: ever leave Honda because it felt like he was so
- 38:38Speaker 1: loyal to them. This is my question then, to you
- 38:40Speaker 1: with Pedro a Costa, because like you mentioned that, it
- 38:43Speaker 1: was KTMKTM KTM through everything. Does he feel like he's
- 38:49Speaker 1: tied to them? Do you think? Or is he is?
- 38:51Speaker 1: He just wants to win no matter what.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Look, there's probably there's probably some element of loyalty to
- 39:00Speaker 2: a degree because they've brought him through and a Heio
- 39:02Speaker 2: has been prominent with that. It would be a hard
- 39:05Speaker 2: thing for him to do to say, look, I can't
- 39:07Speaker 2: wait for this, but he's what twenty twenty one or whatever.
- 39:11Speaker 1: It was.
- 39:11Speaker 2: The difference between the difference between Mark leaving Honda was
- 39:14Speaker 2: that Mark had had an incredible amount of success there
- 39:17Speaker 2: and he had finally got himself back to a point
- 39:19Speaker 2: physically where he was of the opinion that it's not
- 39:23Speaker 2: my body that's holding me back anymore. I think it's
- 39:26Speaker 2: my machinery that's holding me back. And the only way
- 39:28Speaker 2: I'm going to be able to answer that question is
- 39:30Speaker 2: to leave. And it's an easier decision for Mark to
- 39:33Speaker 2: make when he's in his thirties and he's won six
- 39:35Speaker 2: MOTORGP World titles and has a lot of money, and
- 39:38Speaker 2: so you know, I appreciate the fact that Mark has
- 39:41Speaker 2: said I'm prepared to take a massive paker and go
- 39:43Speaker 2: and ride for a satellite team to see if I've
- 39:44Speaker 2: still got it, and the answer is unequivocally yes. After
- 39:48Speaker 2: these last couple of seasons. It's hard for you and
- 39:51Speaker 2: I are to tell a twenty year old who's got
- 39:53Speaker 2: ambitions of winning multiple Motor GP World Championships to be
- 39:56Speaker 2: patient the KTM thing. There's some stuff going on behind
- 39:59Speaker 2: the scene, which we've talked about and I've written about
- 40:01Speaker 2: on Fox sports dot com dot A you about the
- 40:03Speaker 2: financial situation there in At the moment, it doesn't necessarily
- 40:06Speaker 2: look like it's going to be getting better quickly, like
- 40:09Speaker 2: it might be one where you have to write it
- 40:10Speaker 2: out and be a little bit patient. So he's got
- 40:13Speaker 2: to decide to stay with what he has and go
- 40:16Speaker 2: through the end of this rule cycle until twenty seven,
- 40:19Speaker 2: or to try and get out, probably at some sort
- 40:21Speaker 2: of financial cost. And then you're taking like it's not
- 40:24Speaker 2: a total shot in the dark, if you know what
- 40:26Speaker 2: I mean, But it is a bit of a gamble,
- 40:27Speaker 2: because what if you hit your wagon too Honda for
- 40:30Speaker 2: twenty seven and they go, oh, look, we've got an
- 40:32Speaker 2: ok bike for twenty seven, but it's going to be
- 40:33Speaker 2: two more years until we get back there. Right now,
- 40:36Speaker 2: A cost is frustrated after five races, He's not going
- 40:39Speaker 2: to want to be frustrated for four years, so it's
- 40:42Speaker 2: a really interesting one for him. I like the fact
- 40:45Speaker 2: that he cares enough that he's frustrated about the results.
- 40:47Speaker 2: But there's a longer lens that probably needs to be
- 40:49Speaker 2: looked at here, because you don't want to jump too
- 40:52Speaker 2: early at something and then regret it. Because motor GP's
- 40:54Speaker 2: history is full of guys that have done that well, speaking.
- 40:57Speaker 1: On like jumping to things and regretting. I want to
- 41:00Speaker 1: talk about Yamaha with their engine because over the weekend
- 41:04Speaker 1: we heard a lot from Augusto Fernandez, who's filling in
- 41:07Speaker 1: for Miguel Olivera. And while we know that the Yamaha
- 41:10Speaker 1: boys are pretty much told not to talk about the
- 41:13Speaker 1: V four or where that, Augusto was just like, yeah,
- 41:16Speaker 1: I'm just going to share everything that I know. So
- 41:19Speaker 1: we know that they tested on Monday a new version
- 41:23Speaker 1: of the Inline four, which I heard both Fabio and
- 41:26Speaker 1: Jack Miller because Jack didn't have the best weekend this weekend,
- 41:29Speaker 1: but we heard on Monday that there's new updated Inline Force.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Seems to be heading in the right direction. Jack even
- 41:35Speaker 1: said something like they're giving us what we've asked for.
- 41:39Speaker 1: But then I heard the talks about the V four
- 41:42Speaker 1: and there's that rumor that it could be debuting this
- 41:45Speaker 1: year at one of the races. I think Mattegi maybe
- 41:47Speaker 1: Augusto said. Then I heard Fabio saying, yeah, but I
- 41:52Speaker 1: might not even like it, or it might not even
- 41:55Speaker 1: suit me, and then even said I might not even
- 41:58Speaker 1: be there. Then watch your take on that is is
- 42:01Speaker 1: this updated version of the inline for what Yamaha need,
- 42:05Speaker 1: but also this whole V four thing. Thinking about it, Fabio,
- 42:10Speaker 1: who's only ridden for the Yamaha's Emoto GP, He's going
- 42:14Speaker 1: to have to go and change his whole writing style everything.
- 42:16Speaker 1: We know that Maverick struggled when he went from Yamaha across.
- 42:21Speaker 1: How's that going to work? Because there's so much with
- 42:25Speaker 1: an engine. It's not just changing one thing, right, yeah,
- 42:27Speaker 1: everything with that bike.
- 42:29Speaker 2: That point you made then about Fabio only having experience
- 42:32Speaker 2: with riding a Yamaha for his entire Motor GP career,
- 42:35Speaker 2: and we forget twenty nineteen eight. He came in, He
- 42:37Speaker 2: came in as a super super young guy. There's a
- 42:40Speaker 2: bit with Fabio with this V four thing. It's not
- 42:42Speaker 2: an obsession with his But it's one of those things
- 42:44Speaker 2: that if everyone else has got something different to you
- 42:48Speaker 2: and it seems to be good, then these guys are like, well,
- 42:51Speaker 2: I want that because that seems to be working. The
- 42:54Speaker 2: problem is you've got all these other manufacturers that are
- 42:56Speaker 2: super experienced with V four's. It's unrealistic to think that
- 43:00Speaker 2: Yamaha will produce a V four that they're willing to
- 43:03Speaker 2: race that's instantly going to be able to compete with
- 43:05Speaker 2: Ducati and KTM, And it's not a realistic thing. So
- 43:09Speaker 2: is it one of those two steps back to take
- 43:13Speaker 2: one step forwards? Things? Eventually in the long run it
- 43:16Speaker 2: might be better. But if you're Fabio and you have
- 43:19Speaker 2: to go and unlearn a lot of stuff that you've
- 43:21Speaker 2: done with Yamaha for the potential of a greater upside
- 43:24Speaker 2: a long way down the track, that's a tough one
- 43:26Speaker 2: to swallow because we know how good the guys twenty
- 43:29Speaker 2: twenty one World champion had a huge lead halfway through
- 43:31Speaker 2: twenty two before you Yamaha just got out developed really
- 43:34Speaker 2: by Ducati, and we know what's happened since. What was interesting?
- 43:38Speaker 2: I also read those comments after the Hareth test and
- 43:41Speaker 2: it sounds like the bike's quicker in a straight line,
- 43:43Speaker 2: gets out of the corners faster would if you're Fabio,
- 43:46Speaker 2: do you want smaller incremental improvements with a sort of
- 43:49Speaker 2: proven commodity of an engine like they've been running and
- 43:53Speaker 2: you know you're starting from a base of whatever that
- 43:55Speaker 2: basis and you're moving forward or you prepared to go, well,
- 43:58Speaker 2: let's throw all that in the bin for this mythical
- 44:01Speaker 2: V four that might come on and be absolutely fantastic.
- 44:03Speaker 2: And you mentioned before there's a key part in all
- 44:06Speaker 2: of this in the Augusto Fernandez, who I'm sure was
- 44:08Speaker 2: given a bit of addressing down by the Yamaha Comm's
- 44:11Speaker 2: department afterwards, like could you just stop being so honest please,
- 44:14Speaker 2: A gustou In these press briefings, the thing that I
- 44:17Speaker 2: had read you've probably read the same is that he
- 44:19Speaker 2: will wildcut that at Motigi. That's going to be so
- 44:23Speaker 2: interesting in terms of Motiki. Is a weird track. Let's
- 44:27Speaker 2: be honest. There's nowhere like it on the calendar. But
- 44:30Speaker 2: they'll be looking at things like speed trap figures, how
- 44:32Speaker 2: the thing gets out of the corner, is what the
- 44:33Speaker 2: balance is like? Because Tho's in a good place I
- 44:37Speaker 2: reckon in terms of he's not super like young and inexperience.
- 44:41Speaker 2: He's a guy who's been around himTo two champion. He's
- 44:43Speaker 2: got a really important role there in terms of what
- 44:46Speaker 2: he says and thinks and develops with that particular engine
- 44:50Speaker 2: is going to have a huge say what happens going forward.
- 44:53Speaker 2: And if you're Yamaha, I think last weekend, if it
- 44:56Speaker 2: proved anything that you've got to ride a good enough
- 44:59Speaker 2: to win things, you can give him the machinery to
- 45:01Speaker 2: do it. Because Fabio, you know, like I said before,
- 45:03Speaker 2: is one of to my mind, one of the best
- 45:05Speaker 2: four guys in it. If you can give him a
- 45:07Speaker 2: machine that he can fight with, He's proven that he
- 45:10Speaker 2: can do it in the past and he still has that.
- 45:12Speaker 2: So yeah, it's definitely an interesting one. I think it
- 45:14Speaker 2: sounds like both Quatro and Rims are going to raise
- 45:17Speaker 2: the new engine at Lamont in two weeks time now.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Whether Jack Miller gets one or not, I don't know.
- 45:22Speaker 2: I really hope they do give one to Jack because
- 45:25Speaker 2: Jack's so good on this developmental side. You can already
- 45:27Speaker 2: see the impact he's making it Yamaha, just from being
- 45:30Speaker 2: there for this half a season. The more data they
- 45:33Speaker 2: can get on that engine, bring it forward to that
- 45:35Speaker 2: next test that you mentioned at Aragon. Seems like that's
- 45:37Speaker 2: the way forward. But if you're Yamaha, one thing you
- 45:40Speaker 2: can't accuse Yamaha of doing. They are not sitting on
- 45:43Speaker 2: their hands and willing to take this line down. They
- 45:45Speaker 2: are throwing everything at this thing to try and get
- 45:47Speaker 2: back to where they've been in the past. And a
- 45:50Speaker 2: motor GP with a strong Yamaha is a good motor
- 45:53Speaker 2: GP in my opinion, so let's hope it continues well.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Also, Honda this weekend because they had Alisia Spagro there
- 46:00Speaker 1: test rider return and was interesting to see Aleish kind
- 46:04Speaker 1: of saying how on bike fit he was, and we
- 46:06Speaker 1: saw him shake in his hands there in the earlier sessions.
- 46:09Speaker 1: But then I read that on Monday Luca Marini actually
- 46:12Speaker 1: tested on the bike that Aleish had there, So it
- 46:15Speaker 1: seems like Honda are also trying to be that bit
- 46:18Speaker 1: more proactive. I think Yamaha did lead the way, but
- 46:21Speaker 1: Honda they're trying to get back up there as well. Well.
- 46:24Speaker 2: It's interesting they've both gone with non Japanese tech directors,
- 46:28Speaker 2: which is a massive thing for those two companies. They
- 46:30Speaker 2: don't generally outsource those really senior management positions to Europeans.
- 46:34Speaker 2: It's not really happened. And they've recruited from Deucadian from
- 46:37Speaker 2: Apulia because they know there's a proven way of success there.
- 46:41Speaker 2: So that was the first step to turning something around
- 46:45Speaker 2: is putting your hand up and saying we've been doing
- 46:47Speaker 2: it wrong. There's a lot of places that don't do that.
- 46:49Speaker 2: There's a lot of corporate pride and history in ways
- 46:52Speaker 2: of working, particularly in the Japanese sort of corporate culture,
- 46:56Speaker 2: that don't necessarily translate to murdor GP. So they've made
- 46:59Speaker 2: the admission and hired the correct people. I think that's
- 47:03Speaker 2: probably the first step to coming back. But we're not
- 47:06Speaker 2: talking about Motor GP this year like we were last
- 47:08Speaker 2: year where you had the Japanese Cup down the back
- 47:10Speaker 2: and they were just hopeless, like you just never saw
- 47:13Speaker 2: them unless they were crashing. They were nowhere in terms
- 47:16Speaker 2: of featuring anywhere properly in results. Now it feels like
- 47:19Speaker 2: every weekend there is a Yamaha or a Honda in
- 47:22Speaker 2: the mixed. Jean Zako has had a really good year.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Kuaatearero was fantastic this weekend in Spain. Jack Miller finished
- 47:28Speaker 2: fifth in Austin on Merrit and was really really good there.
- 47:31Speaker 2: So it's not just oh, there's no Japanese bikes up
- 47:34Speaker 2: in the top five or six. There's always one on
- 47:36Speaker 2: them up there now. And the fact that you've got
- 47:38Speaker 2: a variety with these manufacturers, I think super positive for
- 47:41Speaker 2: the overall product.
- 47:42Speaker 1: I reckon oh, one hundred percent. I think what was
- 47:44Speaker 1: interesting as well on the Monday test is, you know,
- 47:47Speaker 1: we saw a lot of the manufacturers testing a new
- 47:50Speaker 1: arrow packages or swing arms or et cetera, et cetera.
- 47:54Speaker 1: But agv as Haest sing a new arrow winglet on
- 47:58Speaker 1: the side of the helmet.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Did you see No, I haven't seen this.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Oh HRC reps repsol. I'm god, every there's one HRC
- 48:07Speaker 1: Castro Honda Yeah, posted a funny caption of the chrome
- 48:13Speaker 1: dome they called it, and on the chin on the
- 48:16Speaker 1: side there's like a little winglet there. So that's why four.
- 48:19Speaker 1: It was really quite interesting that this arrow style is
- 48:23Speaker 1: transgressioning from just the bike to actually on the riders. Now.
- 48:28Speaker 1: I don't know if it's something they're going to use
- 48:30Speaker 1: or see or we'll see even this year, but interesting.
- 48:33Speaker 2: The Yeah, the the can's been will and truly opened
- 48:37Speaker 2: their aero. Okay, in these days you can't force stuff.
- 48:39Speaker 2: They can do it. Now there's so much going we're
- 48:41Speaker 2: gonna start hiring riders based on whether they have, you know,
- 48:44Speaker 2: the right shoulder widths or something, because it helps with
- 48:46Speaker 2: the arrow profile and the bike. And that's going to
- 48:48Speaker 2: be it's going to be the next step the way
- 48:49Speaker 2: these things go.
- 48:50Speaker 1: No, no, no, let's go. Let's go. I'm already looking
- 48:52Speaker 1: for twenty twenty seven and wait to see the reduction
- 48:56Speaker 1: and see because we mentioned earlier that dirty air that
- 48:58Speaker 1: we saw with Fabio in the sprint and everything. It's
- 49:02Speaker 1: just getting too much. But that's Moto GP and we
- 49:05Speaker 1: still love it for what it is now. But I
- 49:08Speaker 1: mentioned earlier we had some Aussies on the podium, So Matt,
- 49:11Speaker 1: we have to talk about Moto two. We have to
- 49:14Speaker 1: talk about Sena. Age is crossing the line p three.
- 49:18Speaker 1: That's his second podium this year, if Itt his first
- 49:20Speaker 1: front row is well, qualifying on third on the grid
- 49:23Speaker 1: for the Grand Prix on Sunday. Senna said in post
- 49:27Speaker 1: race that he was struggling with the bike a little bit.
- 49:29Speaker 1: He had some troubled where he didn't feel it earlier
- 49:31Speaker 1: in the weekend. But I think we're seeing more consistent Senna,
- 49:37Speaker 1: and I don't know how much of it is coming
- 49:39Speaker 1: from his teammate Manu, who is getting the data and
- 49:42Speaker 1: learning a lot of or if we're just seeing an
- 49:45Speaker 1: older and wiser senate in his nineteen years of age
- 49:48Speaker 1: on this line.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Yeah, the old ages before his twenty, but there is
- 49:53Speaker 2: a degree of It's one of those things that you
- 49:56Speaker 2: get to a world championship level and you think, oh, yeah,
- 49:58Speaker 2: I can be on the podium, I can compete with
- 49:59Speaker 2: these guys, but until you've actually done it, and then
- 50:03Speaker 2: you've done it more than once. Obviously, Philippi on last
- 50:05Speaker 2: year was pretty special. That was an amazing day for him,
- 50:08Speaker 2: but it felt at the time that it was not
- 50:11Speaker 2: just quite and it wasn't an unrepeatable outlier, but it
- 50:14Speaker 2: definitely didn't feel legitimate or sustainable at that point. What
- 50:18Speaker 2: we've seen this year is he's got a different teammate
- 50:21Speaker 2: who's clearly writing really really well. Bike's good, and he's competitive.
- 50:26Speaker 2: It's not just all that's a surprise that Center AGS
- 50:29Speaker 2: is going well this weekend. Now we're almost surprised when
- 50:31Speaker 2: he's not. And that's been the biggest change. Now, I
- 50:34Speaker 2: think the perception of what people think he can do
- 50:37Speaker 2: in that category, and I think the belief of what
- 50:39Speaker 2: he thinks he can do in this category. It's not
- 50:41Speaker 2: surprising at all to see him up there now. It
- 50:44Speaker 2: looks super legit and well a I enjoyed the It's funny,
- 50:48Speaker 2: like the three m Motor two races were both pretty
- 50:50Speaker 2: similar at Herreth and you had a nailed on winner
- 50:52Speaker 2: up the front, and then the podium spots were really
- 50:54Speaker 2: contentious behind. How good is it when we've got Motor
- 50:57Speaker 2: GP in Europe, in family in viewing, friendly times for
- 51:01Speaker 2: Ossie's and and you've got ozsies actually in contention in
- 51:03Speaker 2: the two lower classes. It was a super fun night
- 51:06Speaker 2: Sunday night.
- 51:07Speaker 1: That battle that Senna had with Diogo Morrera where he
- 51:11Speaker 1: was like on the grass. At one point on the
- 51:15Speaker 1: Fox Socials, we put are you racing Moto two? Are
- 51:18Speaker 1: you cutting the grass there? Center? Because he was literally
- 51:21Speaker 1: millimeters from him running off the track. It was wild. Yeah,
- 51:26Speaker 1: great fight, great five epic battle. And then let's talk
- 51:29Speaker 1: about Joel and Jacob in Moto iie so Joel got
- 51:32Speaker 1: another podium this weekend, so we started on the front
- 51:34Speaker 1: row and he crossed the line in third and then
- 51:37Speaker 1: wet that funny thing in Park fer Me where he said,
- 51:41Speaker 1: if he gets on the podium this weekend at Arez,
- 51:43Speaker 1: where he said it was a track that he doesn't
- 51:45Speaker 1: necessarily enjoy or doesn't suit him, he's getting a dog.
- 51:48Speaker 1: So welcome to the family, Joel Kelso poppy. But yeah, Joel,
- 51:54Speaker 1: I think we said this in previous pods, and I
- 51:56Speaker 1: think it's coming to fruition now he's found that missing
- 51:59Speaker 1: one besoon last year, whatever that change was for him,
- 52:03Speaker 1: He's gone from fading through the second half of the
- 52:06Speaker 1: race to now he's up the front and he is
- 52:08Speaker 1: battling for the entire time. Yeah.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's part of the evolution. The amount of times
- 52:12Speaker 2: last year there'd be a breakaway group of seven at
- 52:14Speaker 2: the front of a Motor GP Moto III race and
- 52:17Speaker 2: Joel would be seventh out of the seven or fifth
- 52:19Speaker 2: out of five. He'd always be at the back of it,
- 52:21Speaker 2: so he'd be fast enough to be in the mix,
- 52:23Speaker 2: but not quite fast enough to convert it. That's where
- 52:25Speaker 2: he's made the step, and he's described it as a
- 52:28Speaker 2: small percentage. Think it's such a tiny percentage of the
- 52:30Speaker 2: overall arsenal, but it's so crucial. He would be really
- 52:33Speaker 2: good for eighty five percent of the race, and then
- 52:35Speaker 2: you just see the fades start to happen in those
- 52:37Speaker 2: last few laps. He's got that staying power now, a
- 52:39Speaker 2: lot of it's between his ears because he's got the
- 52:41Speaker 2: belief he can do it.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Now.
- 52:42Speaker 2: He feels very on top of what he's doing. He's
- 52:44Speaker 2: moved to a better team this year, having just a
- 52:47Speaker 2: really really consistently solid year. We know he's always been
- 52:51Speaker 2: good in qualifying, he's been able to probably transcend the
- 52:54Speaker 2: performance of what he's been writing on at a couple
- 52:56Speaker 2: of his previous stops. But this looks the most optimisty
- 53:00Speaker 2: thing for me is it looks totally legit. There's nothing
- 53:02Speaker 2: sort of out larra sh or random about the whole thing.
- 53:04Speaker 2: He looks like a guy who should be there every weekend.
- 53:06Speaker 2: And then how nice was it to see Jacob Rolston
- 53:09Speaker 2: qualify well, race strongly, get a good result. But more
- 53:13Speaker 2: importantly it was at this same circuit where it really
- 53:15Speaker 2: hurt himself not so long ago. And you, I mean
- 53:18Speaker 2: you've spoken to him enough. You can't tell me that
- 53:20Speaker 2: as you drive in to her reath for that weekend
- 53:24Speaker 2: that the first thing that comes to me. You can't
- 53:25Speaker 2: help but to think about something like that. So to
- 53:28Speaker 2: go back there, park that in the back of your mind,
- 53:31Speaker 2: have a really strong qualifying and a really good race
- 53:34Speaker 2: result where you're clearly a bit underdone. You missed the
- 53:36Speaker 2: first few rounds. You're not quite there yet. Super promising
- 53:39Speaker 2: for all the Aussies in the feeder classes. And yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 2: the fact we're in Europe for the next eleven rounds
- 53:45Speaker 2: means that Sunday nights are going to be appointment viewing
- 53:47Speaker 2: from now and in all three classes.
- 53:48Speaker 1: I think, well, the thing is Motoree and Motor twur
- 53:51Speaker 1: on at prime time, So get your friends, to get
- 53:53Speaker 1: your family over, make a night of it and watch
- 53:56Speaker 1: some of the epic racing. Yes, we love Moto GP,
- 53:58Speaker 1: but Moto three specially shows some of the best racing.
- 54:02Speaker 1: We've preached this on this podcast so many times. The
- 54:06Speaker 1: battles they're changing, the passing, the overtaking. Oh, it's the best.
- 54:10Speaker 1: And I think what is so exciting is we have okay,
- 54:14Speaker 1: we're round five, but Senna and Joel both on the
- 54:17Speaker 1: podium this weekend, Jacob coming back from that injury, top
- 54:20Speaker 1: ten result. This is the future of Moto GP, and
- 54:23Speaker 1: we're seeing it's not just the Italian and the Spanish shows.
- 54:28Speaker 1: We've got the Aussi's, We've got Cormack from New Zealand,
- 54:31Speaker 1: there's more South Africans, there's more nationalities now coming in.
- 54:35Speaker 1: But the Aussie kids, I shouldn't say kids, the Aussie writers.
- 54:38Speaker 1: They're paving the way and if they can continue this
- 54:41Speaker 1: consistency now throughout the year, then I think we're going
- 54:44Speaker 1: to be in for the future of Moto GP looking
- 54:46Speaker 1: really really bright.
- 54:47Speaker 2: No, yeah, I mean, look, you're allowed to call them kids.
- 54:50Speaker 2: I'm definitely allowed to call them kids. My goodness, these guys.
- 54:53Speaker 2: I love how young these guys are because they haven't
- 54:55Speaker 2: had the media citizensm but out of them yet. But
- 54:58Speaker 2: the best thing about them coming on strong and looking
- 55:00Speaker 2: like it's really consistent is where Australia and Philip Island
- 55:03Speaker 2: sits on the calendar. Because we're towards the back end
- 55:05Speaker 2: of the season and you know, there's a very strong
- 55:07Speaker 2: chance Joe Kelso is going to be in a very
- 55:09Speaker 2: very good championship position by the time we get to
- 55:11Speaker 2: Philip Island and possibly Center if this keeps up as well.
- 55:14Speaker 2: So these guys riding at home with real steaks in
- 55:17Speaker 2: October rather than it's just nice to be there and
- 55:19Speaker 2: perhaps jag a good result. That's it's going to add
- 55:22Speaker 2: something for the island, isn't it.
- 55:23Speaker 1: Oh? Definitely. That's why we love MotoGP, and that's why
- 55:26Speaker 1: we love Motorcycle research. Absolutely, But Matt, I think we've
- 55:29Speaker 1: pretty much covered everything from the Spanish Grand Prix. If
- 55:33Speaker 1: you guys want any more info though, you can read
- 55:35Speaker 1: some MAT's articles on Fox sports dot com, do au Forward,

- 55:46Speaker 1: big thank you to Shannon's for helping bring the Pittok
- 55:49Speaker 1: podcast to life. And we're going to have a little
- 55:52Speaker 1: break from ROTOGP because this weekend is via fami f
- 55:56Speaker 1: one Miami f one, which Matt I'm sure you guys
- 55:59Speaker 1: are you Michael Lamonado will chat about and then we'll
- 56:03Speaker 1: be back real soon with the Lemon French Grand Prix.
